9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Daily quizzes.
The later half of class that had to do with evolution of homo sapiens.
This class was immensely difficult but I'm really glad I took with Dr. P because I learned a lot both as a student and as an anthropologist.
The content was diverse but detailed. So I gained a strong insight to many aspects of biological anthropology.
everything
I think the quizes were actually very valuable because they challenged my thinking, and made me a productive reader. however, they were very hard for me, and probably brought down my gade. struggling to do better on each one, my scores usually stayed at a consistant. And I also found it hard to keep up with the reading. Generally the quizes were valuable to my learning experience, and yet I hated them at the same time.
The powerpoint and lectures were nicely structured and informative. The quizzes were helpful.
The content of the course, was honestly one of the highlights. As a university UH doesn't offer many DB Anthropology courses geared towards Physical Anthropology, and coming from recently finishing my BA in Zoology at UH I enjoyed the more scientific look into human origins. The text bok for the course is also very easy to read and comprehend, especially if your new to biological science courses- it is much better than the lectures. I really enjoyed the daily quizes for each chapter, as it gave the student motivation to actually read the book throughout the entire semester and remind them of things mentioned in previous lectures, to help prepare them for the exams and feel well pre-pared before even begining to sit down and study.
The fact that DNA has helped expand our understanding of early humans.
Daily quizes help with remembering material.
Instilling a conceptual evolutionary framework that is useful for all of Anthropology.

10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
As an anthropology major I focus in culture, this class has very little to do with my focus.

The least valuable aspects of the course I believe was the teaching style of the professor. While he is clearly very well informed of the topic, his lectures are very distant from the class - meaning he doesn't connect with the class when lecturing and doesn't ask questions to engage students in the lecture.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
The information should be spread out at least in two semesters. It is a lot and it is intense and it is all valuable so it seems a shame to speed through it all so quickly.

Possibly assign homework instead of in-class quizzes. Allowing more time for discussion of concepts would also be helpful.

Dr. Pietrusewsky is a great teacher however, I would like the opportunity to retake this class. I wish it were available in the summer so that I could concentrate on it, and it only. When you are trying to go for two majors, work two jobs, and catch the bus for 7 hours a day from Nanakuli it is a bit challenging but I am up for the challenge and if given the chance I can excel in this course. p.s. David is awesome!!!
The T.A's for this class were extremely helpful, easy to talk to, and accessible.
The TA's for the class were amazing
Do not teach this class at 7:30 in the morning...too early
I love David!
The TA was very helpful with labs.
This course was very hard and I struggled very much in it. I have a 3.6 GPA, so it's not that I'm a lazy student, I just was not able to learn very well from the teaching techniques. Also, the fact that this class was at 7:30am was a factor in my learning. I hardly ever missed class, but having a class with difficult material this early in the morning makes it hard to focus. It's not that Dr. P is an awful teacher, I just feel that the material should be presented in a different way. I loved the lab and learned so much from it because I'm a hands on learner. It was better for me to be able to work with bones and skulls rather than looking at pictures. Dr. P should consider more hands on learning for lecture.
A good professor overall, thats very well educated in the subject matter. The daily quizes are a great tool for students to keep on track with the reading throughout the semester and discover which areas they may need to look at prior to the exams, I believe all the quiz and exam questions are at an appropriate difficulty, its really nice to just do the readings and attend lectures, and that actually goes a long way in this course - so stressing about last minute studying or feeling unprepared before the exams will not happen. The only thing I would ask is to be more open during lectures asking for student participation with questions. Also while very generous with giving extra credit opportunities, I believe the professor has given too much. Yes, the 5 lowest quiz scores being dropped is perfectly okay, as well as an extra credit assignment. But giving students extra points on quizes for attending review sessions is too much additional 'help', this is an introductory course but it still is at a university level - and I believe students are not gaining anything by attending those review sessions, based on prior review for the exam 2 with the assigned tutor for the course who presents himself not very well (as far as being well informed of the topic and providing answers)... which made me not seek out his help, even if it wasn't need for me personally.
David was an awesome help and resource throughout the semester

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Possibly add another grading component to the lab course besides just lab reports (possibly daily lab quizes for 5 throughout the semester on past lab topics/examples). Also, the grading of the lab practicals should be considered to be curved if the average for the sections iss below normal range (below a 70).
I throughly enjoyed the lab portion of this course
Lab slides seem outdated. New and improved illustrations would be great.
Have it cross the span of 2 semesters instead of one- if the true interest is for people to internalize the information and pass the course.

I would have liked to see more content in the lectures, and more instruction or involvement in teaching how to use different forensic methods. It would be nice to have a review or demonstration of certain methods by Dr. P. incorporated into the labs.
More insight into the actual practices of forensic anthropologists. The readings were very useful for this, but I would have enjoyed more field trip/guest lecture type activities. The JPAC trip was very interesting.

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
powerpoints very helpful in discussing articles
I took this course to help comprehend the changes wrought upon the human organism through migration into pristine areas lacking human occupation. To me, this provides a more recent biological parallel for paleomigration in the 30-40k range, when anatomically modern Homo sapiens regularly intruded upon virgin territory in East Asia and (slightly later) the Americas. Although the course enrollment was small, all of the students participated fully and enthusiastically, which is far better than a class of 20 students, over half of whom are apathetic. Because of this, we were able to discuss ideas at a higher level and ask questions that would have been lost on the dozen or more students who were fortunately not in the class. This is an excellent course, and I hope it is offered again so that other students may enjoy it.
Information on skletal remains, prehistoric Hawaiians, mt and aDNA, evloutionary principles, commensal model, early Polynesian biology. and, phenotype. I learned a lot by being able to do my paper on an area of interest-trauma, and skeleltal indicators in Prehistoric Pacific Islanders. Handouts were very helpful, as were papers he provided for research for my paper topic.
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?

A slightly heavier bias toward current research would increase the utility of the course.
By providing any questions for the week as soon as possible before each class disscussion. It was helpful to not have questions for some weeks-like before assigments due. Perhaps two examples of snyopsis for annotated biblography.
