9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Quizes
Teacher assistance were helpful
The weekly quizzes made it easier to ensure we were retaining the material, as well as helping us prepare for the exams. The lectures were also incredibly beneficial, as was the availability of online material and quizzes.
I feel that all aspects were valuable in truly understanding what physical anthropology is all about.
textbook's online resource (quizzing), handouts, study guide book, extra credit opportunity
Dr. Pietrusewky demonstrated an extremely in depth knowledge of the subject matter, and that authority carried over in his presentation. More importantly, the daily quiz was extremely effective in keeping me thinking about the subject outside of class and very good at keeping me coming.
I enjoyed seeing how bioanthropology can be related to topics and issues that affect our world currently.
The bones lab
I felt like I was able to take away something after each class and was not left wondering whether or not I really learned something. The various means of earning points for the class was also a big help; if I did not do well on a quiz I could earn 2 extra points by going to talk to the TAs and doing the CourseMate quiz provided by the text. Also, the extra credit opportunities available by going to the Anth Dept colloquiums were helpful because it was eye-opening to different areas of anthropology and not strictly Physical Anthropology. Dr. P always had an answer for each question and if he did not know he would challenge us to look up the answer in the text and go to see the TAs about it. I also liked that there was a daily quiz because it made reading the text seem as important as going to the class and not a useless tool we had to spend an exorbitant amount of money on for no reason.
The dispersal Of where and how humans Of different cultures and features lived
all
Course content was very informational.
Daily quizzes ensured that I did the readings.

I think he did a great job in teaching the course. The slides were useful and the daily quizzes helped to reinforce the material as well as help to prepare students for the exam.
I thought it was pretty good as is. It was organized, the TA's were excellent. I would say in the future the lab should line up with what we're learning in lecture more.
I believe that Prof. P is one of the better professors I've had at this university. My only complaint is that our first lab practical was held during the same week as one of the midterms.
I feel that he was fair in the way that he taught and graded this course.
I think he is doing fine with his teaching of this course.
Asking questions was sometimes intimidating.

Very difficult class for a 200 level. Too much quizzes.
All the TAs were wonderful.
Good class. I'd recommend it.
If the lab practical was not given during the same week as one of the midterms, I feel that I could have done significantly better. Also, I forgot to add in my review of the lab that administering any sort of test on the day after Halloween is not a way to get glowing reviews on class rating websites/gain brownie points with students.

unclear expectations
I did not interact directly with Dr. Pietrusewsky, but the material seemed to be mostly relevant (The zoo trip was a bit of an inconvenience though as I normally work nights, so finding time to get out to the zoo was a little bit of a chore. Would have liked an alternative option to this) The section on calculating genetic frequencies also held little use for my field of interest and seemed to be inadequately explained.

Hi
We had two different TA's this semester which was fine. Adam taught material more thoroughly than did Kristen but both were great. Zakea was helpful as she did the grading of all work, but the other 2 assistants to the TA did not seem to have a job and used class as study time or otherwise instead of giving a hand to the students. They did not seem knowledgable on the topics in the lab.
Both lab instructors were excellent. I learned a lot from both but Adam was more approachable.

The practical experience.

Switching lab instructors mid course. Nothing against either teacher, both are great, but different teachers bring different dynamics to the class.
As someone who does not want to be a paleoanthropologist or archaeologist, I don't enjoy studying the remains of our species' possible predecessors. I find the second lab practical exam to not be nearly as enriching as the first one due to my personal interests.

I was unable to evaluate Mr. P on this course because the TAs taught it, however, I would like to give an outstanding review for the two TAs who taught us this class. Both were really smart, and really friendly, with great personalities, and they treated everyone well. Additionally, I had no problem understanding course materials with them and felt very comfortable asking questions and speaking to them. =) Great job!

The knowledge that would be useful in making Forensics a career and what steps would need to be taken to make it a reality.
small classroom, given extra time to complete labs
The in class lab exercises in conjunction with the open lab time throughout the week are some of the most valuable aspects of this course. The opportunity for immediate and hands on applications of the concepts covered in lecture made the class much more engaging.
Learning to look at the different features and what they can tell you. also about the policies that go along with forensic anthropology
The discussion readings were very helpful in building an understanding of the course material. Doing annotations helped to become more engaged in the reading. Labs were helpful in getting practical, hands-on experience in the techniques discussed in class.

I have now with this class had Dr. Pietrusewsky for a full year here at UH and I find his way of teaching to be somewhat akin to how I learn. I am a visual/auditory learner that likes hands on assignments and can prove myself through my actions rather than my ability to recite facts from a book in a exam. Were he to grade me solely on tests I don't think I would still be here in university. For him and professors like him I give thanks.
Being able to study with this professor is largely the reason I stayed at this university.

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The content of the course, was honestly one of the highlights. As a university UH doesn't offer many DB Anthropology courses geared towards Physical Anthropology, and coming from recently finishing my BA in Zoology at UH I enjoyed the more scientific look into human origins. The text bok for the course is also very easy to read and comprehend, especially if your new to biological science courses- it is much better than the lectures. I really enjoyed the daily quizes for each chapter, as it gave the student motivation to actually read the book throughout the entire semester and remind them of things mentioned in previous lectures, to help prepare them for the exams and feel well pre-pared before even begining to sit down and study.
I think the quizes were actually very valuable because they challenged my thinking, and made me a productive reader. however, they were very hard for me, and probably brought down my gade. struggling to do better on each one, my scores usually stayed at a consistant. And I also found it hard to keep up with the reading. Generally the quizes were valuable to my learning experience, and yet I hated them at the same time.
Lecture
The content was diverse but detailed. So I gained a strong insight to many aspects of biological anthropology.
everything
The fact that DNA has helped expand our understanding of early humans.
The later half of class that had to do with evolution of homo sapiens.
Instilling a conceptual evolutionary framework that is useful for all of Anthropology.
The powerpoint and lectures were nicely structured and informative. The quizzes were helpful.
Daily quizes help with remembering material.
This class was immensely difficult but I'm really glad I took with Dr. P because I learned a lot both as a student and as an anthropologist.
Daily quizzes.
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
The least valuable aspects of the course I believe was the teaching style of the professor. While he is clearly very well informed of the topic, his lectures are very distant from the class - meaning he doesn't connect with the class when lecturing and doesn't ask questions to engage students in the lecture.
The daily quizes

A good professor overall, thats very well educated in the subject matter. The daily quizes are a great tool for students to keep on track with the reading throughout the semester and discover which areas they may need to look at prior to the exams, I believe all the quiz and exam questions are at an appropriate difficulty, its really nice to just do the readings and attend lectures, and that actually goes a long way in this course - so stressing about last minute studying or feeling unprepared before the exams will not happen. The only thing I would ask is to be more open during lectures asking for student participation with questions. Also while very generous with giving extra credit opportunities, I believe the professor has given too much. Yes, the 5 lowest quiz scores being dropped is perfectly okay, as well as an extra credit assignment. But giving students extra points on quizes for attending review sessions is too much additional 'help', this is an introductory course but it still is at a university level - and I believe students are not gaining anything by attending those review sessions, based on prior review for the exam 2 with the assigned tutor for the course who presents himself not very well (as far as being well informed of the topic and providing answers)... which made me not seek out his help, even if it wasn't need for me personally.
The TA was very helpful with labs.
Dr. Pietrusewsky is a great teacher however, I would like the opportunity to retake this class. I wish it were available in the summer so that I could concentrate on it, and it only. When you are trying to go for two majors, work two jobs, and catch the bus for 7 hours a day from Nanakuli it is a bit challenging but I am up for the challenge and if given the chance I can excel in this course. p.s. David is awesome!!!
David was an awesome help and resource throughout the semester
I love David!
The T.A's for this class were extremely helpful, easy to talk to, and accessible.
This course was very hard and I struggled very much in it. I have a 3.6 GPA, so it's not that I'm a lazy student, I just was not able to learn very well from the teaching techniques. Also, the fact that this class was at 7:30am was a factor in my learning. I hardly ever missed class, but having a class with difficult material this early in the morning makes it hard to focus. It's not that Dr. P is an awful teacher, I just feel that the material should be presented in a different way. I loved the lab and learned so much from it because I'm a hands on learner. It was better for me to be able to work with bones and skulls rather than looking at pictures. Dr. P should consider more hands on learning for lecture.
The TA's for the class were amazing
Do not teach this class at 7:30 in the morning...too early

I throughly enjoyed the lab portion of this course
Lab slides seem outdated. New and improved illustrations would be great.
Possibly add another grading component to the lab course besides just lab reports (possibly daily lab quizes for 5 throughout the semester on past lab topics/examples). Also, the grading of the lab practicals should be considered to be curved if the average for the sections iss below normal range (below a 70).
Have it cross the span of 2 semesters instead of one- if the true interest is for people to internalize the information and pass the course.

I would have liked to see more content in the lectures, and more instruction or involvement in teaching how to use different forensic methods. It would be nice to have a review or demonstration of certain methods by Dr. P. incorporated into the labs.
A few more bulleted notes for the powerpoint lecture pages would be helpful
More insight into the actual practices of forensic anthropologists. The readings were very useful for this, but I would have enjoyed more field trip/guest lecture type activities. The JPAC trip was very interesting.

powerpoints very helpful in discussing articles
Information on skletal remains, prehistoric Hawaiians, mt and aDNA, evloutionary principles, commensal model, early Polynesian biology. and, phenotype. I learned a lot by being able to do my paper on an area of interest-trauma, and skeleltal indicators in Prehistoric Pacific Islanders. Handouts were very helpful, as were papers he provided for research for my paper topic.
I took this course to help comprehend the changes wrought upon the human organism through migration into pristine areas lacking human occupation. To me, this provides a more recent biological parallel for paleomigration in the 30-40k range, when anatomically modern Homo sapiens regularly intruded upon virgin territory in East Asia and (slightly later) the Americas. Although the course enrollment was small, all of the students participated fully and enthusiastically, which is far better than a class of 20 students, over half of whom are apathetic. Because of this, we were able to discuss ideas at a higher level and ask questions that would have been lost on the dozen or more students who were fortunately not in the class. This is an excellent course, and I hope it is offered again so that other students may enjoy it.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
-- snipped --
By providing any questions for the week as soon as possible before each class disscussion. It was helpful to not have questions for some weeks-like before assigments due. Perhaps two examples of snyopsis for annotated biblography.
A slightly heavier bias toward current research would increase the utility of the course.

22. Other comments:
Dr. Pietrusewsky is an excellent professor. When I asked for help he went out of his way to do so. He was good about getting tests back right away. He seemed very up-to-date on the current situations in the different subjects discussed in class.
I appreciated him having no trouble accommodating some special needs, answering questions, and providing feedback and help with my paper topic.
