12. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?

Jarius Grove presents the material in a very well thought out manner that helps us, as students, to explore the material and start to, at least privately, ask critical questions about politics, government, policy, current events/descicions, terminology etc. His communication style is very engaging and inciteful.

He always tries to answer all the questions and be attentive to students' opinions

His teaching was different from every other professor I've had, which makes it so interesting to sit and listen. He is also understandign as well.

Professor Grove has been an outstanding instructor throughout the Global Politics class. He is extremely knowledgeable and is able to back up knowledge with factual evidence. Jaruis taught in a professional manner while making learning fun by often times throwing in his own personal experiences. I hope to take another class with Jarius in the near future. We need more instructors like him and do away with "old" instructors that have been teaching the same lecturers for how ever long they've been teaching. Just my two-cents. All and all, it's been a great class.

His knowledge of the subject is apparent and he always shows up to class enthusiastic and ready to teach. He is always prepared for lecture and assigns reading, videos, and movies that are consistently relevant to the course and lecture. He responds quickly to emails and questions and always offers his office hours.

The way he talks. He could break something difficult down and help you understand it.

Definitely the cool zombie books and movies that we used this semester =D I thought that they were very helpful for illustrating various things that we learned about while being captivating at the same time.

Professor Grove was helpful by allowing open discussion in the class. It was good to have that because I was able to get to know different thoughts on the issue or passage on the book.

His world knowledge and his knowledge of war and technology.

He was obviously knowledgeable in the topics discussed. He was willing to listen to other students and wanted encouraged everyone else to get involved as well. The readings were interesting and helpful.

I find his vast knowledge about pretty much anything and everything to be amazing. He is so intelligent but at the same time easy to communicate with, he is my favorite professor!

I really appreciated the way that Professor Grove allowed us to have free reign on our opinions and political views. He gave us the opportunity to express our vies and build them by innovated ideas.

Everything about this class is amazing and I would love to take any of his classes again

He seemed to be very knowledgeable about the subject matter. It was easy to have confidence in his instruction. I enjoyed the exam formats (simulations).

Along with having an excellent knowledge of the subject matter, Jarius is funny and passionate, which makes the class a joy to attend. The books and readings were interesting and challenging. World War Z was my personal favorite.

He understands everything he is teaching and a whole lot more. Incredibly smart, definitely someone you want teaching an upper division course

Professor Grove is an outstanding teacher and mentor. He went out of his way to help the students in the class and spent extra time with them for help in the class or for mentoring purposes. He answered all my questions about graduate school on his own time. He was quick to respond to emails and during class he gave each question a thoughtful answer. He clearly knows the subject matter and has a passion for it.

He can answer any question we have even if its off topic and backs all answers with concrete evidence. He made me want to switch my major to poly sci

I can't think of anything, although I was sad that a few of the classes were canceled because I look forward to his lectures.

The topics discussed were a little difficult to approach, just because a lot of the information were new to me. The books were a little hard to relate to some subjects and use it in order to apply them to our midterms and final. But in class he goes into detail of why it is important and why we are reading this book. After that, my problems are all gone away.

About the exam, it would be nice to see more examples of memos?

I know it looks suspicious when there are all excellent markings and strongly agree marks, but I cannot find anything bad about Professor Grove or the course. (And I have thought hard about it.)

Really interesting course and professor, definitely learned more that I thought I would. Relating zombies to bioweapons and outbreak was really effective.

Great course I think its a real learning experience!!

After being in his class last semester, I was very glad to once again take his class. Not only do I learn a lot in his classes, but they are fun and interesting. I have recommended him to a lot of my friends and even convinced one to take this class with me.

Give him more classes to teach! I will take them all

great course, please consider offering it again to future students.

I am very introverted, so it was difficult for me to participate in class discussions. One suggestion I have would be to have occasional small group excercises/activities that eventually assemble into the larger class.

It would be a mistake not to renew Grove's contract.

12. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?

In each class, Professor Grove would break down texts or theories that I did not fully grasp and made me think of these concepts in ways that I would not have thought of otherwise. Also, his depth of knowledge of the subjects in class and his ability to effectively communicate that knowledge was extremly valuable and helpful for me. Finally, on all occasions Professor Grove has been enthusiastic to help out with any questions I had in relation to the readings outside of class.

I find the class discussions to be the most valuable part of Jairus's classes, and this semester was no exception. He is very good at explaining concepts from the readings and putting them into a broader context in class. He also did a good job this semester of bringing current events into the course material as well.

Every class discussion was priceless! I never cease to learn and think in the class.

His ability to keep the class engaged and raising the bar on discourse. He challenges students assumptions and makes us critically defend our ideas. Lots of intellectual vigor.

This is the most challenging course I have taken to date. Although a crowd theory/philosophy focus was not what I was expecting from an International Relations seminar, Jairus stunned me every class with his insights, and I could literally feel my mind being stretched. I would not be surprised if some of these were his own concepts. Although it was challenging to contribute to the group discussion, Jairus always took kindly to every comment and expanded upon it, making every student feel valued and more confident. He could effortlessly lead a 2 1/2 hour seminar without awkward pause, which is pretty exceptional. UH is very lucky to have him!

Learning and disassembling classic texts...then leading to assembling a coherent progression of contemporary concepts which stimulated our graduate level discourse, nevertheless the knowledge was accessible and unpretentious.

His discussion. Also, asks challenging questions. In a mixed class with PhD and MA it can be difficult to maneuver the conversation so that everyone is both challenged and able to follow along. I believe Dr. Grove is quite adept at reaching everyone. The last half of the readings were great.

The vast amount of knowledge that he has, and the ways in which he can connect the different things we have read.

I feel that Professor Grove is very smart person. It seems like he carries a very large body of knowledge around with him. His course is very challenging. The readings are very difficult to understand, but class discussion generally helps.

Jairus is exceedingly well at facilitating class discussion and generating sophisticated theoretical insights from the readings.

Challenging course material yet the professor explained material well and ensured that students worked through ideas and yet class objectives were met.

13. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?

Some of the reading selections this semester felt a little bit random almost. He made the case for their inclusion fairly well during class discussions, but some of the earlier readings took up a lot of time without really laying much foundation. So it felt like it took a number of weeks to actually get into the class.

This is my second year at UH and this was my favorite course so far.

While I had some issues with how the course was constructed, I have no complaints about how the class room portions went. Also, I definitely still gained a lot of useful information and tools. Overall, this was a great class.

This was the best of four classes I took this term. Taking his class next semester regardless of the subject.

Felt like an ivy-league course!

Glad to have Jairus join the faculty in the department of polisci.

This course is not for the faint of heart.

Looking forward to taking more classes form this professor!

I found the mid-term to be a good way to exercise the knowledge we learned, as well as being able to express our own opinions and a good way to filter through what we learned and apply it logically in real life.

Professor Grove was definitely knowledgable in what he was teaching and his lectures were interesting and made the material easy enough to understand.

Coming to class and being able to talk about different aspects of the subject matter. The readings were okay, but I think the real value of this course is being able to hear what Prof. Grove has to say about things since he brings up a lot of considerations I normally would not come up with on my own.

Very informational, and he is very knowledgeable

I definitely learned alot, and especially aspects of military and conflict history I may not have come to know otherwise. I also found the openness of discussion and questions.

Having to think critically about what "war" or "peace" really mean or entail. How different countries see global institutions and a general distrust between and among countries, especially [former]colonial powers versus the rest of the world. And generally having to think critically and thoughtfully on what has occurred in the past and what may occur in the the future.

For me it was learning about waging non-violent struggle because that topic is really interesting to me.

I learned a lot about specific concepts while being able to apply them to a broad range of conflicts. I also took a PACE course roght after this class and found they complemented each other very well which was cool.

The mid-term and final. It was nice to have us think for ourselves and not just regurgitate information on a test.

It was difficult at first when there weren't any slides, but after there was power point it helped me know what to write down and what was most important.

Class was boring at times, felt like he would ramble now and then.......

I found that it was difficult to understand the questions Professor Grove would prompt the class with. Clearer and more precise questions posed would be great. In addition, repeating the question, even if the words are different, would be great right after asking the first time, which reinforces what is being asked and lessons the need for a student to ask for clarification.

There isn't anything in particular I would say here; only that the class time restraint felt hindering.

I would highly recommend this professor to other students. He does not treat you like a simpleton, instead he guides us along.

Great class, glad I took it

My favorite professor hands down. He is very engaging and well prepared. His humor and wit made learning about war interesting. The time and preparation spent in making the slides was impressive. Honestly, the best teacher i ever had and this is my second BA, so i have had many professors.

I love war theory but the problem is this course did not challenge me intellectually. If I wanted to learn everything professor grove said in this class I would go watch war movies. I feel that even though he was knowledgable he doesnt really know how to teach. Give us homework!! I did not gain anything from this class.

Prof. Grove makes class very interesting. I'm not normally very interested in politics, but the way Prof. Grove explains things and presents the material was very interesting and it made me more interested in the dynamics of war and world affairs. His teaching style is also very unique and although he can pose some intimidating questions, it really makes you think. Overall a challenging course and an awesome instructor!

It's far too rare to have an instructor who has a good sense of humor, and Professor Grove certainly has it. There was never really a moment when he seemed too serious which undoubtedly brought a sense of ease to the students in the class.

As I stated above the time flew by too quickly [because of how involved and engaging the class was] and I was left wanting to know more by the end of the class period and found myself looking forward to the next class.

I have ADD and can easily be bored but Jairus' sense of humor and ability to engage students was excellent. I really enjoyed the course!!

The broad range of thinkers with which Dr. Grove made us engage, adn his ability to expound on their thought.

Dr. Grove has an extensive knowledge of a variety of topics and is adept at communicating thoughtfully and clearly on a number of challenging subjects. He was nothing short of masterful in managing and facilitating class discussions.

Excellent reading choices.

The required reading for the course was well rounded and directly supported the general theme/topics of the course on of war and Biopolitics. Professor Grove pushed the theoretical concepts Biopolitics to stimulate and make you think of new concepts and ideas well beyond the generally accepted normalized political and philosophical theories. The class was very challenging and engaging and the reading excellent.

By far and away Jairus' prodding of class discussion made the content invaluable. Also, having the syllabus online was immensely helpful. As someone who has consciously avoided IR as a result of terrible undergraduate experiences, this course has made me rethink my position and has certainly challenged my thinking.

The class discussions were the most valuable part of the course. Jairus is very good at delving into the readings, demonstrating connections, and getting at least some people to participate. I also found the variety in the readings to be challenging in a good way.

This is the second class I've had with Dr. Grove and again, I found this course to be very valuable for my future interests. Dr. Grove does a great job of breaking down very complex concepts in a fun way. The lectures are the most important aspect of the class in that sense. The readings for the course have been some of the most challenging that I've ever read, yet the lectures along with Dr. Grove's willingness to discuss the readings during office hours will clarify any confusion.

Class reading material was extremely challenging and class discussions were very thought provoking. The instructor came in prepared to cover topic yet allowed room for class discussion. Too often at grad level instructors take too much of a backseat and don't push to cover material effectively. This class made me re-evaluate my assumptions and perspectives.

Teaches students to "really" think. Students need to learn how to think.

Stimulating more in class discussion, maybe opening a way to go around the room and have everyone give at least one comment... Also an online discussion center (other than the blog which noone really used) - maybe a list serv? I had so many out of class ideas and no way to share them regularly.

I think that it was evident from students' presentations that the material we were covering was difficult. Personally, I did not gain any further understanding of the material by way of other students' presentations. I can empathize because my own presentation was a real challenge. Perhaps having students start off the class with some key points and problems identified in the text followed by an instructor response would go further toward our understanding of the material. I think that students starting off the class with problems would give the instructor a better grasp for the students' level of comprehension of the subject matter.

I did not find anything regarding this course that I would deem, "least valuable."

Student comments on the course blog were somewhat annoying. The course would have been improved if Jairus had imposed some limits on how long the student presentations should take as several were ridiculously long and shortened the valuable discussion time.

At times the length of the readings was problematic because it was clear that a lot of the class did not do enough of the reading to feel comfortable participating. I'm not sure how that can be fixed though, students often don't live up to their end of the bargain in a seminar.

If there is any criticism of Professor Grove, I think that he may have fallen victim to his own success. This is the largest class that I have attended in the program. My experiences with Professor Grove at the one-to-one level have been really informative. I think that the combination of challenging material along with the large number of students made it difficult to clarify key points- many of which were brand new concepts for some students. The times that I was able to meet with Professor Grove during office hours (unfortunately few) showed how adept he is a clarifying difficult concepts. Most classes that I've attended are with 8-10 students. I think that this would have been a much more appropriate number of students for this class.

Great class! Professor Grove will be an excellent addition to this department, in both his teaching and counseling abilities. He is engaging, articulate, highly knowledgeable and really appears to enjoy teaching. He is always respectful when interacting with students, and is encouraging and thoughtful in his responses, even when disagreeing.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?

EVERYTHING in this course was valuable. Although some of the readings were a challenge, the structure of the way they were assigned really met the objective of the class, which was to give grad students a strong foundation of the various International Relations school of thought. What was invaluable were the class discussions and Professor Grove's keen insights on all the readings. He clearly had a strong grasp of the subject matter and was always willing to guide students to understand the readings in the context of the bigger picture. Professor Grove's was always encouraging of new ideas even if it may seem like it is from the left field. He was always able to help a student think further and deeper.

good survey of IR theory, without being too restricted to "canons" of IR. Very good summaries and vulgarization from the prof, which help put discussions on track and made concepts and theories clearer. Very good job.

Grove's ability to cover and intertwine theorists from many disciplines is incredible. His readings were set up elegantly as each had a particular purpose in expanding all points of interest in each seminar session. His style engages students and requires them to grasp the concepts on a much deeper level missing in some other theory classes. In short, he injects an academic professionalism that should push the upcoming students to excel.

The readings were valuable in that they layed out the foundations of IR and the various schools. The critical reading assignment was equally valuable, perhaps having more than one session would have been good.

Jairus displayed depth of knowledge that is uncanny, and is great at disseminating ideas and uncovering the meanings of text. Therefore class discussion was very valuable. The readings were also very valuable, however lengthy at times...

I found that with each reading and class I better understood a subject that was completly new to me. Jairus also has a great and interactive way of helping the class better understand abstract concepts, the lectures are perhaps the most valuable aspect to the class since he breaks down hard concepts and readings in an understanable and fun way. Finally, regarding the readings, I found that many overlapped with other things I'm studying and in that sense they were very valuable as well.

8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?

In the latter half of the course, Professor Grove began to outline on the chalkboard some of the concepts we were discussing. This was VERY helpful, and I would actually suggest whenever possible to add visuals to explanations and even encourage the grad students to use visuals if it would help them participate in a different form other than just talking.

As before said, some of the readings were a bit much. While they were great pieces, I almost feel like it may have detracted from the overall learning process as we would have been able to discuss the readings in greater detail if everyone was able to do a detailed examination of the readings.

An awesome course and thank you Professor Grove for sharing a treasure trove of invaluable knowledge!

Dr. Grove needs to do less lecturing and more with trying to engage students to speak on topics at hand. Otherwise Dr. Grove is a very smart guy and a valuable addition to the faculty. I very much enjoyed this course and would recommend it to others.

Really appreciate Grove's ability to use blogs and other sites for class information, including the fact that the graduate student is saved from buying tons of books, and instead can access fresh, lucid, and pertinent readings in the context of current times and theories.

Again, Jairus did an amazing job!

I took this class with little intention of taking another IR course. Now, however, I'm defintely going to take his course next semster and very interested in this subfield within political science. Jairus's great teaching methods, willingness to help, and easy going personality makes him a great prof and I would highly reccommend him to incoming students.
