6. Why did you choose to take this course? (It fulfilled a focus designation (WI, E, OC, HAP, etc.), POLS major/minor requirement, major/minor requirement for another department, time and day(s) of the week it was offered, instructor, subject matter, etc.)
Pols.
International Business elective
My major is political science so I needed the credits. Very glad I took this class and hope to take more courses with Jairus in the future.
I'm a POLS major with interest in the subject matter.
Minor requirement and heard good things about Dr. Grove, which were accurate.
I took it to fulful my International Non-Business requirement for my Bachelor's degree in Finance. I had all the pre-requisites and it was a later class which disrupted my work schedule the least. I only missed out on 1.5 hours of work compared to other classes.
it fulfilled a requirement for my POLS major.
I am a Political Major and this class is required.
I needed a DH to fulfill and a friend recommended this course.
I took this course because I needed to take more upper division classes as advised by my advisor. I only need to complete a certain amount of upper division courses within my major, so I decided to go outside of my major and take this class.
I am a Political Science major. The timing of classes perfectly fit with my schedule. The syllabus seemed very interesting and so did the readings.
It was a POLS major requirement. Also I've heard that Professor Grove is great and is one of the professors you should definitely take a class from during your time at UH Manoa.
It fulfills my PS minor
Needed a WI
It was an elective that interested me a lot. I like studying global politics.
It was one of my requirements-also an advisor recommended this course/prof.
IB elective. I thought it was a WI actually.
It fills one of my IB major requirements and I enjoy learning this type of material.
I'm working on a political science minor, so needed this class.
Political Science minor requirement
requirement
I chose it to as a part of my coursework for a political science minor.
major requirement
I had heard great reviews about the teacher, and it is a requirement for my major.
I needed upper level credits... and my friends are nerds and made me take it with them.
Being that I am a Political Science Major, I needed this course to fulfill a requirement.
The title sounded interesting and it fit my schedule, but it ended up being an amazing class.
POLS major, interest, great rate my prof. reviews
Business global requirement and it looked interesting.
POLS major requirement
It is because it is part of the major I have in.
I choose to take this course because it covers International Business course and Upper division 300 Level non-major or non-business.
It was a requirement in my Major's Coursework
I was interested in taking a POLS minor, and this was my first POLS class I took at UH. AND IT WAS AWESOME. I'm definitely going to continue with the minor, I wish all professors at UH were actually as knowledgable and had as much concern for students that Professor Grove has.
Major requirement.
Recommended by a friend
Great interest in Global Politics despite not undertaking a Political Science major. The course description was exactly what I wanted to experience and undertake this semester.
POLS minor requirement.
I chose to take this course because it fulfills an elective for Business major.
I chose the course because I was intrigued of the class title and also it was a required class for me to minor in political science.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
He is an awesome and extremely good at showing a unique perspective.
Professor Grove can keep the class interesting just by simply lecturing. I find this extremely rare. I actually want to go to class to hear what he has to teach.
Openness to opinion and he always answered someone with their hand up whenever no matter if it was mid sentence.
Incredibly knowledgeable and lectures were so interesting I didnt want to miss a word he said. Books were about contemporary issues that were relevant to what's going on now. They challenged us to understand new concepts and think in different ways.
convenient office hours and genuinely enjoys answering challenging questions. Also a wiseacre; very entertaining, never a dull moment when he is present.
He knew what he was talking about and was very passionate about the topic. He also found way to make it as interesting as possible with his examples and video clips.
His vast knowledge and enthusiasm.
He seems to enjoy teaching and sharing the knowledge he has about political science.
he was very knowledgable on modern topics and current events, it gave me a better understanding of things I had very little previous knowledge on.
He is extremely knowledgeable about his subject and field. He communicates his thoughts very clearly and demonstrates that he is a great orator. Although he only assigns two exams throughout the semester, he is very lenient with grading them - he puts emphasis on what we think and elaborating our own thoughts instead of what others say.
This jigga knows his material well.
He is really intelligent and speaks with passion and commands his lectures. If you don't have the book he will help you get a copy via PDF or even lend his own personal copy. Really helps you out if you're in need.
Professor Grove is such a great professor. You really learn a lot from his class and class discussions. He makes the material interesting; especially in the way that he lectures. He has a sort of dry, intellectual humor going on. There were times where I felt I was sitting in on a political comedy show like the Colbert Report or something. It made me want to read the texts so that I could join in on the laughs in class.
I enjoyed the lectures learned a lot
Very engaging. Enthusiastic. Knowledgable. Easy to understand. Great teacher
He could give me very clear and informative explanations for any questions i had. He could explain a lot of things about the subject very clearly and effectively.
His understanding and knowledge about the subject at hand.
Interesting lecture.
He's probably the best teacher I've encountered at UH. Extremely smart, but the best part is that he knows how to relay his knowledge in a simple way to students. He makes it relatable and the books we read were perfect material.
I really like all of the topics and conversations we've covered in the class. I've always thought critically about world governments and large corporations or extra-national organizations, but Jairus has helped me in learning how to defend my unique and sometimes seemingly radical viewpoints. I've also become better at explaining myself and why my ideas are awesome.
The thing most valuable about Jairus Grove is his overall knowledge of topics and his ability to connect those topics to what we are talking about in class in a clear and effective way.
Jairus Grove has definitely been my favorite professor at UH. I thoroughly enjoyed his class and will go out of my way in the future to take other classes he offers. He is the most intelligent and well-informed teacher I have ever had in my college career. I would encourage UH to find more professors like him.
He seemed very knowledgable and I definitely learned a lot of new things in his class.
Being able to talk about the subject during class always helped my understanding of the content I was reading about.
the class discussions, keeps every student engaged.
He's really smart... and not lazy.
The knowledge he provided on each subject, it was like he wrote the book himself.
He was always energetic and knowledgeable, always seemed excited to be teaching and that makes it fun to go to class.
Applicable, subject matter was up to date, challenged my current ideas and beliefs, made me think critically on my own personal beliefs and opinions. The discussion style helped me develop new ideas and hear opposing opinions/ perspectives.
He is really knowledgeable in his field and brings up real world examples to supplement his teaching. He seems really passionate about the subject and it shows in his instruction. +++
He is clearly very knowledgeable about the various topics we covered. It was great to just listen him lecture about these topics.
He have always prepare avery good lecture and his office hour is also very useful. He always answer whatever the questions we have.
Something I found the most valuable is the discussions that he has with the class. He makes your brain think and realize concepts such as climate change or cartels in a different perspectives.
Jairus Grove is an excellent teacher. He is very knowledgeable in the realm of politics. He speaks loud and clearly during his lectures and is (at least in my opinion) very charismatic and witty with his words. Jairus Grove is cares very much about his students and is always around during his office times to offer help.
He is literally probably the best teacher I've ever had. Extremely helpful and though-provoking material; I feel like I actually came away from the class with a better understanding of the world around me and have a better ability to think critically. He also teaches in a way to explain complication concepts and ideas. I tell everyone I know to take his class, definitely one of the best classes I've ever taken and most definitely the best professor at UH.
Enjoyable books.
Knowledge of the course and to challenge students to think critically.
His communication style was great. The subject contained many new, elaborate and often confusing elements..as is Global politics..therefore the way he broke down the information as well as readings was very beneficial. Less structured way of teaching and interacting with students made the subject the most interesting and enjoyable this semester.
Jairus Grove knows a lot about the subject and is good at challenging popular ideologies. He keeps the class entertained my incorporating humor into his lectures, and manages to keep the class's attention without relying much on presentations and technology to get his main points across. Kudos.
Many of the topics are very interesting and opened my eyes to subjects I never considered. The topic we have in class is very intellectually stimulating.
He knows how to communicate well in regards to difficult subject matters that aren't easy to talk about. The concepts he brought to the table were well thought out. The readings were very much intertwined with the course material. Not once did I think the course strayed off path.
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
meh.
I am disappointed when class is canceled.
Nothing.
His TA is inexperienced, but she is a TA. otherwise no complaints.
There was nothing least valuable or helpful about Jairus. He always made it known that he was around for anyone who needed help before class in his office.
Needs more visual aids.
Doesn't response to emails as quick.
Some of the classes lacked structure and eventually would just turn into a big debate between various students.
I felt as if some of the concepts were really hard to grasp, especially due to the subject matter that this class was given. He should probably teach more of an upper division/graduate-level class because my mind couldn't keep up with some of his high intellect.
He didn't know his students at all.
Nothing
Jairus Grove is very valuable.

I wish he could do a power point, so that I could write down and take more notes on what it is he has to say.
This was definitely a challenging course. I knew what I was getting my self into at the start, however I do wish the syllabus was more in-depth.
his shoes were least valuable presumably.
That he made us write our midterms so short! It would be cool to allow more write ups on the material we read.
Sometimes a bit more structure and organization to the classes and lectures would have been nice.
Nothing
Initially I was very intimidated in the class because of the instructor's vast knowledge and some of the discussions we had. I think it would be helpful in the future if there was a little more encouragement for all students to share their opinions. Though I believe if Jairus was aware that some students might be intimidated, he would addressed it.
Nothing.

He is really smart... at some points my brain couldn't keep up.
The amount of subjects we covered became overwhelming at times. After 2 weeks and sometimes 1 week we jumped from one book to the other. But again, the lectures provided much needed insight.
N/A
So.much.reading. (There was a lot of reading but in the end it was actually worth it)
He doesn't use Powerpoint or some other visual medium well/effectively. It was okay though.
Answers to questions in class were sometimes unclear. They were clever and sarcastic and mocking at times (NOT in a bad way) when I was expecting a straight answer, so it would take me a bit to realize what he was saying in reponse to the question.
noting.
Nothing, I think everything was valuable.
nothing.
none.
Maybe more visuals would be nice. However, I thought everything was well beyond Average.
Hard to say, quite a valuable guy!
It would be nice if he could explain more of the terminology he uses so that people who are not POLS majors can understand him more clearly and feel more involved in class.
The readings are too much. Especially the "fragility of things" is a hard read that I cannot read the book in a limited time.

My favorite class at UHM thus far
I wish there were more assignments. This class was hard for me because the subject matter is not something I take to easily. With only 2 assignments it made it really hard to improve your grade. I wish there was credit for class attendance.
Great course!
The course material was very difficult for me, mainly because my major is a biological science, most of it was hard to comprehend. But I did learn a lot about current affairs and some history that I find very valuable. The grading policy and work load was very fair.
Really good class. Wish Jarius Grove was teaching a 300 level course in the fall, or even a 200 course. I will most definately take another class of his while I am at UH.
Jairus Grove is awesome! I would definitely take another class from him. I wish he taught other subjects, ones that are not so interesting, because Professor Grove would make it enjoyable and entertaining.
Thank you love the course !!!
Great teacher no lie
Absolutely loved this class and would recommend it to anyone. Jairus is awesome!
Jairus Grove is an OUTSTANDING instructor. His classes are stimulating, informative, and entertaining. All of the reading material covered in class is fascinating and class discussions are captivating. Of all of the instructors I have had at UH, Jairus Grove stands out as perhaps the best.
Best political science class ever, I always love a friendly debate with Jairus!
Best/ most intelligent teacher i've had.
Overall a great course, awesome instructor who knows the books we covered inside and out. He used the book and related it to real time - real world issues that were taking place everyday. In response to question #20, Hawaii wasn't really included in his course, but that might be a good thing because a lot of the other POLS courses cover issues in Hawaii. Maybe next semester he could slightly incorporate Hawaii Politics into his curriculum.
All around enjoyed this course and learned a lot of valuable information that I was able to really absorb.
Would take another class with this professor. Schedule and syllabus were clear and well suited to the course.
I feel that Professor Grove was a good instructor. He made the course interesting. If I needed to, I would take another course from him again.
Thank you! :)
It was nice that he allowed for open discussion into his lectures. He was able to involve students in being more engaging.
I recommend Jairus Grove to any student at the University of Hawaii. Whether you're a Political Science Major or not. Jairus Grove makes the course interesting.
FUCKING AWESOME CLASS. No need for improvement, I wish everyone everywhere could take this course.
Fun class!
Grove was my favorite Professor I have had at UHM.
This class has made me strongly consider changing my major to Political Science. Thank you Professor Jairus. You stretched my previous ideas while allowing me to form my own new ones about the systems and challenges of this world.
Awesome. Would definitely recommend him to anyone on the fence about taking one of his courses. I learned a lot.
Just a suggestion, but maybe typing the notes in Microsoft Word is better than writing on the chalkboard.
Awesome course. Got a lot out of much more than I thought I would. A lot of it has to do with the professor. He definitely knows much more than it appears. Has to be the top ten instructors in Manoa.

Both the instructor and the approach at global politics were of appeal to me. Jairus is incredibly knowledgeable and provocative in his thinking and teaching, and I knew I would get a lot out of taking this course with him.
Professor Grove came highly recommended from other students in the Political Science department. He never ceased to challenge us to think deeper and differently about the course material throughout the semester.
I chose to take this course because the content is very relevant to my research and also because I really wanted to take a class with Jairus Grove, he is an excellent professor, I really admire him.
Firstly because of the instructor, secondly because of the subject matter.
My interest in the subject matter and Grove's approach to it.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Jairus pushes his students to think critically at imaginatively. It is clear that even just sitting and hearing him lecture can be incredibly informative. After taking the course, I see how much he also learns from and with his students, which is very rare.
Although Professor Grove's familiarity with the material was far beyond any of the students in class, he never made us feel inadequate. He orchestrated an atmosphere of intellectual growth and challenged us to think about the course material in renewed ways.
He has the ability to challenge the students, explain difficult concepts in very simple ways, he is extremely creative and attentive, always ready to answer questions and talk about our research. If I had to rate him in a 1-10 scale he would be a 10!
He is incredibly smart and interesting to listen to. His courses are designed excellently with such compelling material he then makes even more compelling via the questions and comments he raises and the way he ties the different texts of the semester together. This course was by far my favorite course of the semester. Jairus is also a good listener. He gives very valuable and usable feedback on our work.
The different concepts, approaches and methods that Grove has command over along with the different resources that he recommends that always prove to be useful
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Nothing.
Nothing. He is a teacher, advisor and faculty member of the sort others ought to aspire to.
My learning style and how I encounter texts and works is different from how we usually approach them in Grove's class which provides for a critical learning experience at times and at times a struggle to participate.

12. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Very humorous, easy to talk to, had many interesting viewpoints, experiences, thoughts, opinions, etc on subject matter throughout the course. Professor Groves classes engaged me into following the discussion and put me into thought every class. This makes learning and wanting to listen and learn much easier.
He is very well versed in the subject and encourages you to think outside of the box regardless of if your ideas differ from his own.
Reliable feedback
He has been one of the most amazing and valued teachers at all the years I've been at UH, and really can't imagine how much less I would've enjoyed the past few semesters without him ;(
Jairus has an extraordinary knowledge of virtually every subject. It is sometimes scary haha. Any question a student has he can address to the fullest.
Very acknowledgeable and knows a lot about the topic, very good and teaching this subject.
He is one of the most intelligent professors I've had at UH. He really challenges his students to think about important concepts. He pretty knows the answer to every question you could possibly have...about anything!
He was very insightful, knowledgeable and engaging. In addition, he was patient, took the time to answer all questions ( relevant or not )and was never judgmental of the questions asked or the people who asked them. All those qualities and his ability to relate any conversation to the topic of the day were a constant challenge intellectually to keep up with the class being taught. Finally, the choice of books though challenging and a little dense ( manner of writing for a couple of them )were a great choice for the class and today's political climate and debates. All in all, a great class on an intellectual level. Thank you.
I enjoyed his teaching style. He's very laid back and conversational, which puts me at ease in his class.
He really explained the concepts very well and did very well attempting to facilitate and encourage class discussion.
Incredibly smart and helpful. Did an excellent job engaging class and making difficult concepts interesting and easy to understand. Awesome in class discussions.
Very intelligent and witty.
Knows a lot about everything, good resource and offers great insights.
This was a great class, one of the classes i look forward to attending every Tuesday and Thursday. Prof. Grove was very knowledgeable about his field of study and had creatively created a way to explain the material.
Mr. Grove is a graduate student of UHM and he understand what students go through to graduate. I think he undewrstands global politics really well and should teach as a career. He is well knowledgeable about the subject that I think he should become a full time teacher, instead. I think I saw him once on television.
He seemed to know the material well and seemed like he was willing to help.
He knows the content better than any living human being I've encountered before. I've taken his class 3 semesters now and it's been my favorite class for all of them.
Amazing professor!
He provoked questions that made me think about things in new ways.
Jairus was available for students to ask questions or needed help understanding the material.
He knows so much and has a vast understanding of what he was teaching. He showed us a different approach to the way we think about things and helped us create our own ideas on the subject matter.
He is one of the few professors ANYWHERE! that can relate to students of the generation y cohort. He communicates very effectively !
He is very enthusiastic about the subjects taught within the course.
Very knowledgable, and understanding.
Prof. Grove is able relate different current affairs in international relations for us students to be able to learn about a new concept. He seems to know a little about everything, so arguing with him is difficult. He is also able to bring the class back from crazy banter to a conversation that is a little more rational.
He is extremely friendly and communicates well with everyone. He challenges students to think deeply about global politics.
expansion of ideas presented in readings and also encouraging students to challenge them
Jairus is such a bro.
I really appreciated the way he posed very challenging questions and wasn't afraid to address very controversial material.
I find his knowledge about basically ALL topics to be amazing, He inspires me in so many ways, and has led me to read additional chapters other than what is required. He piques my interest in foreign relations, domestic issues and all things in between. I take all the courses he offers. I truly think he inspires many students to think beyond ourselves and look at the whole issue at hand.

He's amazing. I repeat it again. How is there anything least valuable or helpful? D:<
Nothing he is the best teacher I have ever had
Sometimes boring topics but overall nothing least valuable.
Nothing.
I tend to not be able to follow his train of thought as he goes on, so I get kind of lost, so I fall asleep often.
Nothing
Class format and lack of assignments seemed to make things a bit boring. Very little motivation to attend class.
Wish more people in the class spoke more and offered ideas.
I liked his powerpoint presentations but he moved to the board and jotting notes for the class seemed less desirable so I mostly listened in class.

Class discussions would sometimes, well quite often, go off tangent.
The class was dominated by lecture and then a small majority of the class answering questions or imposing their comments. Some of those people were in my opinion loud and ignorant. Although you were always there to correct or refocus their opinions giving a broader light it would have been cool to maybe break down into smaller groups or do alternative activities so that I could hear other people's takes on the subjects and readings. Also having different viewpoints than most of the loud kids in class I think it would have been easier for me to bring a different voice in a small group setting rather than in front of a whole room where kids felt it was okay to yell immature ignorant comments rather than form an educated mature argument.
NOTHING !

Sometimes, Prof. Grove's concepts are over the students head, and he doesn't realize it. Also, I feel the midterm was handed out late in the semester.

Jairus is an extremely valuable asset to the poli sci department and the campus. I was very privileged to have been a student of his and I would recommend him to any student regardless of their interests. He explains things in a very understandable way and will do whatever he can to make sure his students are grasping the material. Jairus is the best.
Fantastic professor, best I have had at UH.
Great Class!
There should be more class acitivities so students can work together in order for the next lv. courses when we would have to do group projects.
Probably the best teacher I've ever had the opportunity of learning under.
Everyone should take this class from Professor Grove
Definitely taking another class from him!

It was a really interesting course and the books brought a new light to old schools of thought. I learned a lot, but because of the unconventional readings and Jairus' knowledge it also made me think a lot about forming my own opinions. If the course was taught in a smaller class I think it could be even better.
Grove is the best college professor I have ever had! This man deserves a medal !
This was one of my favorite classes of all time. I really can't convey the importance of the information provided in this course. If I could recommend one class that everyone should take it would be this one.
Keep this class available for future students.
He is a valuable asset to UH Manoa.

12. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
It is really helpful when Professor Grove states a complex idea and then rewords it in another term to help clarify that point. In addition, I find it helpful as well when he begins class with questions and topics he would like to address throughout the class.
Professor Grove has a knowledge and skill to help students to think. This is his greatest value. I say this because many others want to think for the student. Many students become educated without being able to think for themselves. Professor Grove is of vital importance to the UH for this very fact.
Dr. Grove presents intellectually challenging reading material and is able to generate exceedingly useful class discussions by asking engaging questions.
This was my favorite class this semester. I love the way Jairus taught this course. I find NM absolutely fascinating. The reading selections were awesome, and led to some very awesome discussion (s), but his knowledge is far encompassing and his thoughts on the varied writers and subject were incredibly helpful. Love his style! Wish I can be like him when I grow up!
it's the second course i have taken with Jairus and has not failed to disappoint in terms of the rich material students and the prof. engage with effective in inspiring me to expand beyond my narrow outlook for conceptualizing political science and other disciplines beyond mainstream academic discussions up to date with the contemporary needs and challenges that the discipline of political science if faced with (ability to reference knowledge from a wide spectrum of sources/fields)
YES HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING. EVEN THE COURSE IS CHALLENGING AND DIFFICULT, HE IS EXPLAINED AND STIMULATE DISCUSSION WONDERFULLY.
Prof. Grove is a truly remarkable educator. The level of care and detail with which he constructs his courses in unparalleled in my experience as a graduate student. I cannot imagine a more capable and competent professor, and he's just starting out, which is to say that he's only going to get better! As for the 702 course specifically, I would say that this has been a truly watershed intellectual experience for me both personally and professionally. The seminar has done much to challenge me to think about the implications of my work beyond mere words on the page, and I will look back on this course as being one of the truly unforgettable educational experiences of my life.
Great knowledge of the field of study we were exploring. At the same time great capacity to learn and discuss concepts and ideas and even push them and challenge them. He is very creative and attentive. He was able to have different discussions with us on different subjects and engage us and our different backgrounds and always bring it back to our field of study. That enriched my class experience and helped me think of new ways of approaching new materialism, our class subject.
Everything. Brilliant, cares about students, makes himself available, just an A+
Jairus is an inspirational teacher. Going to class is always exhilarating and his depth and breadth of knowledge is very impressive. He clearly cares about students and our learning.
Jairus is an excellent teacher and is extremely good at helping direct students toward research they will find useful. He very well may be the best teacher in our department, especially of for graduate students.
I found the class discussions to be particularly useful. We spent a lot of time thinking about the methods used by various writers and how they compare and contrast with each other, which was particularly useful to me because it's not something that I automatically notice when reading on my own.
13. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Perhaps reading guides before each reading assignment could be incorporated into the class. At times i am reading an assignment, but did not catch the same ideas that were discussed in class.
I found nothing that had a least value. It was all of great value.
Nothing. This has been an excellent seminar course that will benefit me tremendously as I write my dissertation.
Don't like this question. There is nothing least valuable or least helpful about this or any other professor.
n/a
NONE- ONLY A COMMENT, SOMETIMES HE SPEAKS TO FAST THAT NON ENGLISH SPEAKERS LAG IN UNDERSTANDING HIM..BUT HE IS GOOD
There is nothing that I can think of that wasn't valuable in all my interactions with Grove, inside class and outside.
His office is a bit cramped and I think the department should spring for nicer chairs to sit in during long conversations.
Nothing, he's great.
Some of the concepts are difficult and Jairus sometimes forgets his students are not familiar with them, but he will always explain them in detail if asked.

This is the best course on research methods that the Department of Political Science has offered. I have taken other courses that do not cover the subject well.
I feel very fortunate to have been able to take this unique course from Dr. Grove. His teaching style is engaging and his theoretical perspectives are groundbreaking. This course has opened up new worlds in my research orientation and the University should be grateful to have such a formidable scholar as Dr. Grove.
This professor was so awesome that I would take another class that he was teaching.
waiting for the book to come out in the near future
I'm excited to read his book, but my Fall semester is ruined because he won't be teaching!!!
There was an incident with a professor from another department interrupting our class and causing quite a disturbance. Dr. Grove handled the situation really well at the time, and afterwards not allowing it to disrupt the semester.

12. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
He can answer any question we have even if its off topic and backs all answers with concrete evidence. He made me want to switch my major to poly sci
Professor Grove has been an outstanding instructor throughout the Global Politics class. He is extremely knowledgeable and is able to back up knowledge with factual evidence. Jaruis taught in a professional manner while making learning fun by often times throwing in his own personal experiences. I hope to take another class with Jarius in the near future. We need more instructors like him and do away with "old" instructors that have been teaching the same lecturers for how ever long they've been teaching. Just my two-cents. All and all, it's been a great class.
I find his vast knowledge about pretty much anything and everything to be amazing. He is so intelligent but at the same time easy to communicate with, he is my favorite professor!
Along with having an excellent knowledge of the subject matter, Jarius is funny and passionate, which makes the class a joy to attend. The books and readings were interesting and challenging. World War Z was my personal favorite.
Professor Grove is an outstanding teacher and mentor. He went out of his way to help the students in the class and spent extra time with them for help in the class or for mentoring purposes. He answered all my questions about graduate school on his own time. He was quick to respond to emails and during class he gave each question a thoughtful answer. He clearly knows the subject matter and has a passion for it.
Everything about this class is amazing and I would love to take any of his classes again
He seemed to be very knowledgeable about the subject matter. It was easy to have confidence in his instruction. I enjoyed the exam formats (simulations).
His world knowledge and his knowledge of war and technology.
He was obviously knowledgeable in the topics discussed. He was willing to listen to other students and wanted encouraged everyone else to get involved as well. The readings were interesting and helpful.
He understands everything he is teaching and a whole lot more. Incredibly smart, definitely someone you want teaching an upper division course
Professor Grove was helpful by allowing open discussion in the class. It was good to have that because I was able to get to know different thoughts on the issue or passage on the book.
The way he talks. He could break something difficult down and help you understand it.
His teaching was different from every other professor I've had, which makes it so interesting to sit and listen. He is also understandign as well.
He always tries to answer all the questions and be attentive to students' opinions
Definitely the cool zombie books and movies that we used this semester =D I thought that they were very helpful for illustrating various things that we learned about while being captivating at the same time.
Jarius Grove presents the material in a very well thought out manner that helps us, as students, to explore the material and start to, at least privately, ask critical questions about politics, government, policy, current events/descicions, terminology etc. His communication style is very engaging and inciteful.
he made it interesting and exciting
I really appreciated the way that Professor Grove allowed us to have free reign on our opinions and political views. He gave us the opportunity to express our vies and build them by innovated ideas.
His knowledge of the subject is apparent and he always shows up to class enthusiastic and ready to teach. He is always prepared for lecture and assigns reading, videos, and movies that are consistently relevant to the course and lecture. He responds quickly to emails and questions and always offers his office hours.
13. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Wish I could find something, but I can't.
nada
I know it looks suspicious when there are all excellent markings and strongly agree marks, but I cannot find anything bad about Professor Grove or the course. (And I have thought hard about it.)
About the exam, it would be nice to see more examples of memos?
I can't think of much at all to say here.
The topics discussed were a little difficult to approach, just because a lot of the information were new to me. The books were a little hard to relate to some subjects and use it in order to apply them to our midterms and final. But in class he goes into detail of why it is important and why we are reading this book. After that, my problems are all gone away.
When he switched from power point to board.

Thank you
Give him more classes to teach! I will take them all
I am very introverted, so it was difficult for me to participate in class discussions. One suggestion I have would be to have occasional small group excercises/activities that eventually assemble into the larger class.
It would be a mistake not to renew Grove's contract.
An intellectual. Brilliant!!
great course, please consider offering it again to future students.
Great course I think its a real learning experience!!
After being in his class last semester, I was very glad to once again take his class. Not only do I learn a lot in his classes, but they are fun and interesting. I have recommended him to a lot of my friends and even convinced one to take this class with me.

12. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
I feel that Professor Grove is very smart person. It seems like he carries a very large body of knowledge around with him. His course is very challenging. The readings are very difficult to understand, but class discussion generally helps.
His ability to keep the class engaged and raising the bar on discourse. He challenges students assumptions and makes us critically defend our ideas. Lots of intellectual vigor.
Challenging course material yet the professor explained material well and ensured that students worked through ideas and yet class objectives were met.
His discussion. Also, asks challenging questions. In a mixed class with PhD and MA it can be difficult to maneuver the conversation so that everyone is both challenged and able to follow along. I believe Dr. Grove is quite adept at reaching everyone. The last half of the readings were great.
The vast amount of knowledge that he has, and the ways in which he can connect the different things we have read.
Learning and disassembling classic texts...then leading to assembling a coherent progression of contemporary concepts which stimulated our graduate level discourse, nevertheless the knowledge was accessible and unpretentious.
Every class discussion was priceless! I never cease to learn and think in the class.
I find the class discussions to be the most valuable part of Jairus's classes, and this semester was no exception. He is very good at explaining concepts from the readings and putting them into a broader context in class. He also did a good job this semester of bringing current events into the course material as well.
This is the most challenging course I have taken to date. Although a crowd theory/philosophy focus was not what I was expecting from an International Relations seminar, Jairus stunned me every class with his insights, and I could literally feel my mind being stretched. I would not be surprised if some of these were his own concepts. Although it was challenging to contribute to the group discussion, Jairus always took kindly to every comment and expanded upon it, making every student feel valued and more confident. He could effortlessly lead a 2 1/2 hour seminar without awkward pause, which is pretty exceptional. UH is very lucky to have him!
In each class, Professor Grove would break down texts or theories that I did not fully grasp and made me think of these concepts in ways that I would not have thought of otherwise. Also, his depth of knowledge of the subjects in class and his ability to effectively communicate that knowledge was extremly valuable and helpful for me. Finally, on all occasions Professor Grove has been enthusiastic to help out with any questions I had in relation to the readings outside of class.
Jairus is exceedingly well at facilitating class discussion and generating sophisticated theoretical insights from the readings.
13. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Material of course was not necessarily the type of politics I am interested in but Professor Grove made it interesting and interactive.
Nothing...

Some of the reading selections this semester felt a little bit random almost. He made the case for their inclusion fairly well during class discussions, but some of the earlier readings took up a lot of time without really laying much foundation. So it felt like it took a number of weeks to actually get into the class.
the course was great and I look forward to taking more with him!

This course is not for the faint of heart.
This was the best of four classes I took this term. Taking his class next semester regardless of the subject.
Glad to have Jairus join the faculty in the department of polisci.
While I had some issues with how the course was constructed, I have no complaints about how the class room portions went. Also, I definitely still gained a lot of useful information and tools. Overall, this was a great class.
Felt like an ivy-league course!
This is my second year at UH and this was my favorite course so far.
Looking forward to taking more classes form this professor!

5. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Professor Grove was definitely knowledgable in what he was teaching and his lectures were interesting and made the material easy enough to understand.
His strong passion and knowledge about the matters discussed made me want to learn more.
I enjoyed every single reading, daily discussions (even if I was just listening), and I love that Professor Grove really knows what he's talking about.
Coming to class and being able to talk about different aspects of the subject matter. The readings were okay, but I think the real value of this course is being able to hear what Prof. Grove has to say about things since he brings up a lot of considerations I normally would not come up with on my own.
For me it was learning about waging non-violent struggle because that topic is really interesting to me.
He included us directly in his lectures, made us interact
Professor's knowledge was impeccable...he had every answer to any question we asked... extremely knowedgable and always willing to share it.
The mid-term and final. It was nice to have us think for ourselves and not just regurgitate information on a test.
Very informational, and he is very knowledgeable
The midterm
a lot of information presented through engaging lectures
Discussions were heated and made me rethink things through
He teaches you about stuff that is kinda obscure, aspects of society that you would not discuss in a mainstream class.
I found the mid-term to be a good way to exercise the knowledge we learned, as well as being able to express our own opinions and a good way to filter through what we learned and apply it logically in real life.
The discussion and personal involvement
That we covered a large range of history and facts in an engaging manner
i really felt that our instructor was very knowledgeable about the subject and that i was challenged every day i went to class, often i felt leaving that i hadnt really fully grasped the material until we had the discussion.
Everything was good. I learned a lot.
I learned a lot about specific concepts while being able to apply them to a broad range of conflicts. I also took a PACE course roght after this class and found they complemented each other very well which was cool.
The class participation and informative slldes.
I definitely learned alot, and especially aspects of military and conflict history I may not have come to know otherwise. I also found the openness of discussion and questions.
His knowledge and comedy
Having to think critically about what "war" or "peace" really mean or entail. How different countries see global institutions and a general distrust between and among countries, especially [former]colonial powers versus the rest of the world. And generally having to think critically and thoughtfully on what has occurred in the past and what may occur in the the future.

Class was boring at times, felt like he would ramble now and then.......
No homework
The walk up the stairs of the building
I don't know.
It was difficult at first when there weren't any slides, but after there was power point it helped me know what to write down and what was most important.
The Internet readings
Too much reading, I couldn't keep up and therefore my interaction with class discussion and following what was being taught was very difficult.
i felt like this was a class that people took because it sounded cool and not because it fulfilled requirements
I think pop quiz on the reading materials might motivate the students to read the reading material more? It feels like the reading materials were not taken much seriously.
Sometimes the questions asked was a little confusing.
I found that it was difficult to understand the questions Professor Grove would prompt the class with. Clearer and more precise questions posed would be great. In addition, repeating the question, even if the words are different, would be great right after asking the first time, which reinforces what is being asked and lessons the need for a student to ask for clarification.
not posting slides onto laulima
There isn't anything in particular I would say here; only that the class time restraint felt hindering.

An engaging professor. Definitely makes me think.
good class and enthusiastic professor! A+
My favorite professor hands down. He is very engaging and well prepared. His humor and wit made learning about war interesting. The time and preparation spent in making the slides was impressive. Honestly, the best teacher i ever had and this is my second BA, so i have had many professors.
He is the best professor I have had so far at UH. He challenged me in every way, and I feel like I can take all that I learned from this class and apply it to real-world scenarios. Thank you so much!
Prof. Grove makes class very interesting. I'm not normally very interested in politics, but the way Prof. Grove explains things and presents the material was very interesting and it made me more interested in the dynamics of war and world affairs. His teaching style is also very unique and although he can pose some intimidating questions, it really makes you think. Overall a challenging course and an awesome instructor!
Favorite class and teacher this semester.
I loved this class! Jairus is the BEST!!! :)
I love war theory but the problem is this course did not challenge me intellectually. If I wanted to learn everything professor grove said in this class I would go watch war movies. I feel that even though he was knowledgable he doesnt really know how to teach. Give us homework!! I did not gain anything from this class.
Great class, glad I took it
Really enjoyable course, it was very interesting and fun to go to and I felt like I learned a lot.
kind of a strange number for the class, dosent fulfill any additional requirements that the pols 100 class already gives you
I really liked this course and would recommend it to others.
I have ADD and can easily be bored but Jairus' sense of humor and ability to engage students was excellent. I really enjoyed the course!!
I would highly recommend this professor to other students. He does not treat you like a simpleton, instead he guides us along.
It's far too rare to have an instructor who has a good sense of humor, and Professor Grove certainly has it. There was never really a moment when he seemed too serious which undoubtedly brought a sense of ease to the students in the class.
One of the best classes ive taken in a long time
As I stated above the time flew by too quickly [because of how involved and engaging the class was] and I was left wanting to know more by the end of the class period and found myself looking forward to the next class.
One of the most interesting classes I've taken. Looked forward to attending class, never was bored while in lecture. Grove is an excellent professor, seemed to know everything about everything, always had funny stories about his life and college days in Texas. Really really enjoyed the class and can't wait to take other courses from same professor.

5. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The class discussions were the most valuable part of the course. Jairus is very good at delving into the readings, demonstrating connections, and getting at least some people to participate. I also found the variety in the readings to be challenging in a good way.
Teaches students to "really" think. Students need to learn how to think.
Excellent reading choices.
The required reading for the course was well rounded and directly supported the general theme/topics of the course on of war and Biopolitics. Professor Grove pushed the theoretical concepts Biopolitics to stimulate and make you think of new concepts and ideas well beyond the generally accepted normalized political and philosophical theories. The class was very challenging and engaging and the reading excellent.
Jairus's ability to explain some of the more difficult texts! Class discussion was usually always stimulating!
The broad range of thinkers with which Dr. Grove made us engage, adn his ability to expound on their thought.
By far and away Jairus' prodding of class discussion made the content invaluable. Also, having the syllabus online was immensely helpful. As someone who has consciously avoided IR as a result of terrible undergraduate experiences, this course has made me rethink my position and has certainly challenged my thinking.
Jairus is incredibly knowledgeable about the field. He brings a lot to the table...
Class reading material was extremely challenging and class discussions were very thought provoking. The instructor came in prepared to cover topic yet allowed room for class discussion. Too often at grad level instructors take too much of a backseat and don't push to cover material effectively. This class made me re-evaluate my assumptions and perspectives.
Dr. Grove has an extensive knowledge of a variety of topics and is adept at communicating thoughtfully and clearly on a number of challenging subjects. He was nothing short of masterful in managing and facilitating class discussions.
This is the second class I've had with Dr. Grove and again, I found this course to be very valuable for my future interests. Dr. Grove does a great job of breaking down very complex concepts in a fun way. The lectures are the most important aspect of the class in that sense. The readings for the course have been some of the most challenging that I've ever read, yet the lectures along with Dr. Grove's willingness to discuss the readings during office hours will clarify any confusion.
The professor's interventions and the list of reading was great
6. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
At times the length of the readings was problematic because it was clear that a lot of the class did not do enough of the reading to feel comfortable participating. I'm not sure how that can be fixed though, students often don't live up to their end of the bargain in a seminar.
I think that it was evident from students' presentations that the material we were covering was difficult. Personally, I did not gain any further understanding of the material by way of other students' presentations. I can empathize because my own presentation was a real challenge. Perhaps having students start off the class with some key points and problems identified in the text followed by an instructor response would go further toward our understanding of the material. I think that students starting off the class with problems would give the instructor a better grasp for the students' level of comprehension of the subject matter.
I did not find anything regarding this course that I would deem, "least valuable."
It was all great!
nothing
Student comments on the course blog were somewhat annoying. The course would have been improved if Jairus had imposed some limits on how long the student presentations should take as several were ridiculously long and shortened the valuable discussion time.
Stimulating more in class discussion, maybe opening a way to go around the room and have everyone give at least one comment... Also an online discussion center (other than the blog which noone really used) - maybe a list serv? I had so many out of class ideas and no way to share them regularly.

We need more courses like this one.
If there is any criticism of Professor Grove, I think that he may have fallen victim to his own success. This is the largest class that I have attended in the program. My experiences with Professor Grove at the one-to-one level have been really informative. I think that the combination of challenging material along with the large number of students made it difficult to clarify key points- many of which were brand new concepts for some students. The times that I was able to meet with Professor Grove during office hours (unfortunately few) showed how adept he is a clarifying difficult concepts. Most classes that I've attended are with 8-10 students. I think that this would have been a much more appropriate number of students for this class.
Great class! Professor Grove will be an excellent addition to this department, in both his teaching and counseling abilities. He is engaging, articulate, highly knowledgeable and really appears to enjoy teaching. He is always respectful when interacting with students, and is encouraging and thoughtful in his responses, even when disagreeing.
Great job! Thanks for offering this class!
Really enjoyed this course, wish I had it two years ago.
Jairus is one of the best professors I have ever taken a course from. His intelligence and understanding of the material is astounding. Also, his willingness to provide useful comments on my writing, even unrelated to the course, have made me a better writer. He's great!
One of the best professors in this department!!
Thanks for a very thought provoking seminar!
I cannot imagine a more dynamic and rewarding learning experience than the one Dr. Grove crafted and delivered this semester!

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I found that with each reading and class I better understood a subject that was completly new to me. Jairus also has a great and interactive way of helping the class better understand abstract concepts, the lectures are perhaps the most valuable aspect to the class since he breaks down hard concepts and readings in an understanable and fun way. Finally, regarding the readings, I found that many overlapped with other things I'm studying and in that sense they were very valuable as well.
Prof.Grove's analysis and inter[retation of IRS leading me into the critical thinking.
The readings were valuable in that they layed out the foundations of IR and the various schools. The critical reading assignment was equally valuable, perhaps having more than one session would have been good.
Jairus displayed depth of knowledge that is uncanny, and is great at disseminating ideas and uncovering the meanings of text. Therefore class discussion was very valuable. The readings were also very valuable, however lengthy at times...
Grove's ability to cover and intertwine theorists from many disciplines is incredible. His readings were set up elegantly as each had a particular purpose in expanding all points of interest in each seminar session. His style engages students and requires them to grasp the concepts on a much deeper level missing in some other theory classes. In short, he injects an academic professionalism that should push the upcoming students to excel.
good survey of IR theory, without being too restricted to "canons" of IR. Very good summaries and vulgarization from the prof, which help put discussions on track and made concepts and theories clearer. Very good job.
EVERYTHING in this course was valuable. Although some of the readings were a challenge, the structure of the way they were assigned really met the objective of the class, which was to give grad students a strong foundation of the various International Relations school of thought. What was invaluable were the class discussions and Professor Grove's keen insights on all the readings. He clearly had a strong grasp of the subject matter and was always willing to guide students to understand the readings in the context of the bigger picture. Professor Grove's was always encouraging of new ideas even if it may seem like it is from the left field. He was always able to help a student think further and deeper.
Professor Grove is smart but sometimes I cannot follow him.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
None
As before said, some of the readings were a bit much. While they were great pieces, I almost feel like it may have detracted from the overall learning process as we would have been able to discuss the readings in greater detail if everyone was able to do a detailed examination of the readings.
In the latter half of the course, Professor Grove began to outline on the chalkboard some of the concepts we were discussing. This was VERY helpful, and I would actually suggest whenever possible to add visuals to explanations and even encourage the grad students to use visuals if it would help them participate in a different form other than just talking.

I took this class with little intention of taking another IR course. Now, however, I'm defintely going to take his course next semster and very interested in this subfield within political science. Jairus's great teaching methods, willingness to help, and easy going personality makes him a great prof and I would highly reccommend him to incoming students.
It's a very challenging and meaningful classes, I really appreciate Prof.Grove's effort
Again, Jairus did an amazing job!
Really appreciate Grove's ability to use blogs and other sites for class information, including the fact that the graduate student is saved from buying tons of books, and instead can access fresh, lucid, and pertinent readings in the context of current times and theories.
Dr. Grove needs to do less lecturing and more with trying to engage students to speak on topics at hand. Otherwise Dr. Grove is a very smart guy and a valuable addition to the faculty. I very much enjoyed this course and would recommend it to others.
An awesome course and thank you Professor Grove for sharing a treasure trove of invaluable knowledge!
