Jonna Eagle knows her stuff as far as the scope of this course. As for being a professor, she does a good job conveying material accross to students.

Professor Eagle inspired me to learn more about film as an art, as well as changing the way I watch film even for pure entertainment purposes. Every film we watched fit into whatever genre or topic was being covered for a given week and I even found most of them enjoyable or at the very least sparking some critical thinking on my part. If I had the opportunity, I would strongly consider taking another film class with Professor Eagle.

Superb. Best teacher I have had yet at the university. She really knew and understood the subject and shared her enthusiasm for film with everyone. I learned more in her class than I have in any other film or American studies class

Ms. Eagle seems to be very passionate about her subject. Passion can be contagious, and it certainly made the class more enjoyable.

Very great and positive teacher. I can tell she really enjoys her area of study (who wouldn't though, American film history is awesome!) It is refreshing to see a teacher that is so enthusiastic about a subject, even when it is 9am. I would love to take a higher level course with her.

I can tell Dr. Eagle is very passionate about American film history through her lectures. She was VERY enthusiastic and that made me very engaged in class. She was one of the best professors I had this semester.

She is the best professor I have had in my college career. Her teaching style and the personal touches she adds to the course content make everything she says in class interesting. She expects the best from students, but works really hard with you to make sure that you are getting the best grade possible. I can honestly say that she cares about her students and is 100% invested in making our experience in her class as amazing as possible.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?

Watching the history of American Cinema unfold.

Films were interesting, and the critical skills I gained have helped me to more thoroughly enjoy film.

The fact that this course requires a student to watch movies to be able to do coursework.

Watching the later 3/4 of all the movies posted. The topics covered throughout the course also felt relevant to movies today. The historical ties between early film and modern films was particularly interesting, such as how we've come full circle as far as film as a technological marvel.

The integration but not overwhelming amount of movie clips. Discussion about what the class thought about various movies.

I enjoyed the actual film viewing aspect of the course the most.

Being able to watch scenes from a movie in class and hear input and opinions from other classmates.

I enjoyed the film screenings. Even though I could never attend, I liked the fact that one of my only assignments was to watch a film.

I loved the films and the way they were chronological by decades for the most part. The different genres were very well separated. I also felt that the papers made me think and it helped me write other papers as well.

I enjoyed learning about early cinema (silent films) the most.

I liked that she always had slides prepared, and video clips to reference to in her lecture. I also have never written about film before so the reading was very interesting and helpful.

Watching movies

Watching and critiquing films. Now I will probably critique all of the movies I watch.

I liked having a separate section on Friday's that had smaller student size and was used more for discussion. I am the type of person who will speak up in a smaller class rather than a lecture hall, so I really benefited from the smaller sections. I also really liked the chronological timeline that the course followed.

16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

The readings, short as they may be, are mostly academic and a little dry.

The fact that there is only one time slot for screenings, and not everyone can make them. I wish there could have been two screenings; one at different times, on different days of the week (i.e. Tues. at 3pm, Thurs. at 5pm maybe).

Discussions, since I'm a shy student in class.

Class section was a little small and not completely necessary. I feel another lecture during that period would be much more beneficial.

I didn't really dislike anything about the course except that it's difficult to receive any grade higher than a B on the papers.

Some paper requirements weren't clearly stated.

The last critical essay.

I didn't really enjoy the extensive amounts of reading.

readings are too long, 90% of the class did not do them.

I did not enjoy rewatching Avatar, and I did not think the "Section" portion of class was very helpful or necessary.

It was difficult to see the movie screenings on the assigned day, and section was not as engaging as the lecture. The readings that were assigned each week on laulima were not exactly required so discussion on the readings never really happened. I feel that I would have learned more if professor eagle had taught section, I feel that she is more enthusiastic about the material.

It was difficult to take notes because Dr. Eagle went through her lectures slides quickly.

Nothing. It was all appropriate.

I disliked having the separate movie screening time (not within the schedule class), because it was difficult to fit around my schedule.

17. My overall evaluation of this course is...

Great course if interested in cinema.

Two thumbs up!

This course is a fun course, if a student is interested in watching movies and writing about them, and learning about film history, and how film is shot through the ages. However personally I found this course to be uninteresting just because I don't like to watch movies very much. Despite that, Jonna Eagle does a good job at teaching the material to other students.

Definitely one of the most memorable courses of my college career. The film studies conducted will stay with me for the rest of me life, giving me a different outlook on films compared to how I watched them before I took the class.

The course is well organized and interesting. The material was a little dull at times, but the class was still entertaining and taught the students the basics of film.

Great course! I have taken an intro to cinema course before (for my major) and I thought I would just be recycling info, but this class was much more in depth than the course in my area of study! I wish professor eagle would come teach some courses in the communication department, she would be a valued addition for us!

18. Other comments:

I'd recommend this course to friends of mine, to anyone that enjoys cinema, and I'd be interested in taking other courses taught by Dr. Eagle in the future.

Overall, a great class. The T.A. was a harsh grader when it came to him grading the papers and he seemed to be "Mr. Know-It-All" when it came to every single thing in the class. It was disappointing when we were in the lab section on Friday and the T.A. would shut down any idea other than one he fully agreed with.

I really liked this class!! It was interesting, and I recommended it to everyone!!

I would love to take another course by Jonna Eagle if possible.

One thing...would be to not talk over a movie clip that is still going. I know that you are trying to explain key aspects or whatnot, but it is very distracting and I found it hard to concentrate when then blaring sound was coming out of the screen and then you were talking over. I'll admit most of the time I tuned you out and was listening to the clip. Either pause the clip or show it and then analyze it. Not at the same time.

Dr. Eagle is awesome!! She is a great addition to the American Studies faculty. She is extremely knowledgeable about the course content. She is a fair grader and shows compassion for her students by being flexible on deadlines (within reason) and rewrites. She makes herself available for assignment feedback/ discussion/ consultation outside of class.

Great teacher. She knows her subject well and is able to give depth to readings that may not be that stimulating or interesting. Nonetheless, I enjoyed her enthusiasm despite teaching a class that lacks it.

I think she is a really good teacher and very enthusiastic about the topics we went over in class.

i think that she is an excellent professor and she is really brilliant and you can really see this when we have class discussions. She makes me think about the material in class in ways that I would not of thought about it before so the class discussions kind of brings everything together to me. I think that she gives a lot of advice and help if we need it and come to her to ask about a certain paper we have to write in class.

She is a good teacher who knows a lot about the area. She is always trying to get us to talk instead of her talking a lot which is very helpful for quiet students. She is a little strict in her grading and writing, but I have found that this will help us to be better writers. I like that she is also accessible to questions after class and during office hours.

She's awesome, she definitely mad discussions fun and entertaining. She's sweet and loves her job which made class less stressful for a seminar class.

Jonna is an awesome professor. She's always enthusiastic about the topics she's teaching, and this enthusiasm helps us to engage with material that we might find dull or boring. She is always willing to meet with us when we need help. I feel like her selection of books helped me to understand a broad span of American Studies topics in an interesting and unique way.

The group discussion is my favorite...always engaging and humorous.

I liked the open discussion and hearing everyone's opinions

I liked reading some of the books for class but I didnt enjoy many of the books because i felt as if the author was redundant in making their point or they could of chose a different written style to make their work come alive. However, the books I did like was Rolling the R's and I did enjoy parts of What Comes Naturally and the Consumers Republic. I also like the class discussions because it gives me a chance to hear what other people's ideas and opinions are about the books we were reading for class.

I liked when we got to watch movies. We should fit more of those in.

group presentations & discussions

discussions helped clarify what was going on in the readings. it seemed intimidating because you could get a different idea from the book versus discussing it.

Some of the readings were boring, but otherwise, the assignments were fine.

The movies, the YouTube clips, the pictures...media, in a nutshell. And the ensuing discussion following the sometimes controversial situation/topic/people as portrayed through the various forms of media. Oh, and intersectionality! That's trippy.

I really liked the fact that every week there was someone new presenting discussion questions.

The selection of books was pretty odd, but this made the approach to AMST topics interesting. I really loved Tourists of History. I also liked that we transitioned to weekly discussion questions.

16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

The reading content did get redundant here and there, as if the texts were trying to force book length material by adding filler well after the point had been made. I personally tend to enjoy multiple articles to get multiple perspectives/ voices on topics.

The readings

I didnt like some of the books we read especially Crowning the Nice Girls because I felt that she didnt really give her own thoughts she mostly used other peoples work and the only interesting part about that book was the interviews but than she kind of just left it as is and didnt do any analyze.

There was just way too much reading for this class. I could not keep up. When I was able to do all the readings I could never retain the info and would forget what I read by the time we had our class discussion. It was hard enough to keep up with the book reading, but in addition to that we had to read an article online every week. 150+ - 200 pages a week is just too much. Some of the books were also a little hard to read, as well as a little boring. But overall, I liked the selection of books better then the AMST 381 class. I liked that many of the books were from the female position, which we saw very little of in the AMST 381 class. Since we could never cover everything in the book during class, I feel that it would have been better if less readings were assigned.

the required texts for the course were rather dry. It made it difficult to engage in the material.

It was hard to do so much of the same routine: read, write and report. I would suggest allowing for some creative response weekly assignments to break up this writing heavy course.

I didn't like that we had to post at least 10 response post on Laulima. I felt that 10 was a bit too much. perhaps it would have been best to post one for every book.

Related to the last part of what I liked best, I really disliked the weekly postings. I didn't really find them to be useful or stimulating, and I found the only way to really engage with the text through the posts were to think of questions to ask. I think it would be better if we had a prompt we had to answer every week for the texts, and submit them in a dropbox or something so that we couldn't just scan other entries for a quick summary. It kind of encourages laziness.

Books tend to be boring for the volume of content.

The amounts of reading were very steep. And honestly me and most of the people in the class really did not do all of the readings.

17. My overall evaluation of this course is...

This class is fun and engaging.

I thought the course was interesting but if some of the books were changed to something else than the course would of been more fun and people in class would of spoke more during the discussions. However, I did learn a lot from this course because before walking into this course I would of never make connections between certain things.

Amazing professor, I will definitely take another class by her

I dreaded the idea of having to take another Junior Seminar because I absolutely detested AMST 381. However, unlike 381, this class was actually useful in understanding American Studies topics. I feel that I learned a lot in this class, and that the readings challenged me. I also liked that the discussion helped us think of the main topics of each books in terms of other topics... INTERSECTIONALITY, yes.

i really enjoyed this course. Although challenging, allowed a great critique on American society as well as history.

AWESOME

I don't understand the point of this course. I can see how it is trying to be a survey of American Studies. However it was just a repeat of the class before. Sure, it moved through history but the same themes were discussed over and over. Too repetitive. Needs to be more than just reading books, discussion and writing essays. Could be much more interesting. The professor did her best with the material and made it bearable, but the course itself I did not like and simply took becasue it is required.

18. Other comments:

Dr. Eagle is the bee's knees.

I still am not sure why this class along with the AMST 381 class are required for AMST majors and minors. I feel that both this class and AMST 381 are more like literary analysis classes where we have to read several books in depth and discuss what it means. It seems more like an english class. Instead of having the class focus on 6-7 books that focus on 1 or 2 themes each, I would have liked if the class could have covered more topics like a lecture class. I think that style of teaching would have been more helpful for AMST majors to help give us ideas for our thesis.

This may be a bit time consuming but highlighting the important points of the text (maybe post in Laulima following class) that you want to talk about more that always seems to be squeezed right into the last 5 minutes of class, after which those important points totally leave my mind. Thanks for the cupcakes; although I haven't tried them, I'm sure they're delicious!

Jonna is a great prof and she definitely knows her stuff. I feel that someone of her caliber should be a grad prof instead of an undergrad prof because of her knowledge! Her vast amount of knowledge should be used to a greater potential than it is being used for now.

Is a really fun instructor, I would recommend her to other ACM majors or American studies majors

that she is an excellent teacher. I came into this course, not knowing what to expect but I am very glad that I took it. She is very easy to talk with and is happy to be teaching what she's teaching.

She definitely knows the topics discussed in class and is very very enthusiastic about teaching them. I can honestly say that I have learned a lot and am also glad to say that this class has greatly helped me with my major (ACM).

She was great! I enjoyed her opinions and criticism of film we viewed in class. I loved how she would always wants feedback from her students.

She is a great teacher. This could easily have been a dull class in which the only good thing was watching movies, but Jonna really encouraged us to talk and made watching the films a true learning experience. I never thought that I would learn anything from watching Avatar, but I now know that anything is possible. She is very knowledgeable about this topic and that makes all the difference in trying to analyze the films.

Jonna demonstrates an expert level of film critic and in that she strongly encourages critical analysis on films and other art forms to students. Great class!

16. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?

I like it was a small class so you can hear and kind of get to know the other classmates on what they are thinking about the subject.

This course really opened up my views of various movies. Before I would watch movies for just the content but I am finding myself more frequently taking notice of other stylistic elements of movies and it deepens my understanding of them.

Watching different movies from different time periods to understand the history of film. Also that those movies were each different in style.

not enough time to be able to have a screening in class and when having to screen a movie not being able to access the movie in a easier way like at home for example.

I think some of the readings are a little too advanced for my level. I understand that this is a 200-level course but it was my first course in this field and I wasn't use to reading this kind of material.

I honestly did not like all the reading. There was just too much for me.

I hated watching The Birth of a Nation... but that doesn't mean I didn't learn something from it. I also didn't really like Taxi Driver for some reason, but I do like that it's so different from most of the other films we watched (and yet similar in so many ways).

very interesting learning early cinema and how cinema is still advancing

I would definitely, and already have, recommend this to friends. It is a very educational course that really changes your view of movies.

I think the selection of films is generally great. If Jonna was looking for suggestions for other films, I might say Inception is one to consider. I think that would be a nice complement to The Matrix, if the latter is going to remain on the syllabus.

I was very excited to take a class with Professor Eagle. It was a subject I was unfamiliar with, but I enjoyed all the texts and articles.

Jonna is a wonderful addition to the department!

Great! Definatly worth taking her class!

She is a great, new addition to the American Studies faculty. Very approachable and always available to assist students. Seminar was well organized and the material was engaging. She challenged students to think and work outside of their "comforts" zones and allowed us to work through some of the more difficult theories and readings together in class. We were not expected to have "all" of the answers and she provided an environment for intellectual discourse to try to help one another better understand the tougher content to grasp with just one reading.

she is a wonderful professor, and a invaluable resource to the American Studies department.

Dr. Eagle is clearly very knowledgeable and picks up on the nuances of what it means to be critical and truly engage a text or an idea.

I really liked how relative the subject was with what is going on with our military and politics and entertainment world today.

Media material and round-table discussions about readings and assignments

I do like that she incorporated several films as demonstrative of some of the material we were studying. She also brought in other media examples, which allowed me to see certain aspects of entertainment in a new light. I appreciated that Professor Eagle provided us with her understandings and helped guide us through the material. Since some of the material was new to me, giving us a little background information on certain topics definitely was useful.

I enjoyed Dr. Eagles choice of comprehensive booklist required for the semester. She took us from the introduction of media's involvement in war and progressed through all the wars following. Each book was a wonderful choice for each class discussion, and her knowledge is vast and deep on the subject. This was the first class I had taken with Dr. Eagle but hopefully not the last.

I enjoyed the class discussions of most of the texts.

I enjoyed most of the readings particularly the October readings.

17. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

I liked the weekly postings the least. Although in theory, I think that they are a great idea, the reality is that most grad students (because of our busy schedules and probably some procrastination) don't post until right before class. This made it difficult to read all of the other students's post and discuss them in class. In addition, for those who participated regularly in our weekly discussion there didn't seem to be a need to ensure they did the readings; especially, when some students talked very little or not at all.

Some of the readings had too much stuff in them to break down in one class period. We needed more specific questions to focus the discussion.

I did not like the readings about the Pentagon and media, they were too dull for me and I felt like I could have read just one on that topic as opposed to three or four.

This is a well-constructed course. The reading and film selections are appropriate and help solicit lively class discussions.

This was a great course that the department should definitely offer again.

it was an interesting course. I learned a lot of new material and got to examine texts from different perspectives.

This is an interesting and important course. I think that it could have been a bit better if the students were more prepared and more critical. There seemed to be a huge range of critical ability in the class which I find typical of students at UH. This makes invigorating discussion difficult and frustrating. There were so many moments where I felt truly close to being inspired because the readings were so fascinating and then class would get going and everyone dropped the ball. Because the students lack the skill to pick up on all the nuances of points and arguments in the readings I would have loved for Dr. Eagle to intervene a bit more. She's so brilliant and I wanted to hear more from her.

19. Other comments:

I would have liked to have had a partner to work with on the day we lead discussion; instead of leading by ourselves. I realize this would mean that we would have to lead discussion twice instead of once, but having a partner to work with and bounce ideas off of would have been helpful.

More guided questions for the posts could be helpful to focus course discussion. Also, having students stick to deadlines could help class discussion and progress. Posting questions the night before does not give everyone the opportunity to reflect on the questions before class.

I appreciate all the thought that went into putting together a really great reading list. I wonder if having students facilitate an entire class is the best approach when the skill level is so varied. All in all I am happy I took the class and I look forward to the opportunity of learning more from Dr. Eagle.
