12. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?

The course covers elements of design that are important to architectural design, and a general sense of design for the real world. The content of the class which is the different elements of design were most valuable How I could relate the course to Arch101. Everything The breadth of information that was given to us about some basics in architecture and design. learning new skills looking at things from a different perspective The guest speakers Learning about the golden ratios and watching videos on actual architects and their own designs/processes. Everything. Its all relevant and on a needed to be known for the future as an architect. Well, just that everything we've learned throughout this class has helped out a lot especially of how it connected with what I was learning in my other classes as well. Just the thought of design and what other architects go through to gain experience and how they some of the buildings are not architecturally based. So far this class has taught me a lot about architects and what it is all about, the inspiration and so forth. Also of how the little things we do not pay attention to, are the most important of all. The TA discussions that helped us reach better understanding of and gain new perspectives on the class topics. The Ted talks were helpful because they portrayed the views and opinions of other people within the field, and others within a similar field. The readings were also helpful in reinforcing lectures in the class as well as in arch101. The informative videos and the hands-on exercises in and out of class. The movies were really helpful because it was a way to virtually visit places. The most valuable aspect of this class was how now I look at architecture differently and understands more aspects of it We get to know about different architectures and also learn about desin concept and reasoning . The videos and the ted talks were most valuable to me because having a visual and audio is more affective to me than reading a text book. Vedeos we watched and all the readings. I enjoyed the general overview and the examples of architecture demonstrated in the videos. Learning about different types of design and applications in the real world and learning about features of actual buildings around the world Exposure to different types of Architecture and aspects of design. The content required research and some learning of new material and a good starting point for someone entering the field of architecture. The most valuable aspects of the coarse was learning about the different architects and what they build and how they build it. Understanding design as well as architecture really helped give perspective to something that could be hard to understand. the analyze of the ratio, the video of the famous architectural buildings are great examples to learn. The drawing practices, and hands-on assignments. Relating TED talks and lecture/reading materials/synthesizing information the readings The most valuable aspect of this course was learning about the different forms of architecture and how they shaped the modern world. Other valuable aspects included doing some of the homework in order to show our level of creativity and understanding of how we can communicate our ideas effectively. 1.) Learning Design aspects 2.) The readings 3.) The Videos I didnt see the class or the teacher valuable at all. I think that the readings especially from the book held the most value in this class I liked the hands on activities, im more of a hands on learner. the readings and ted talks videos and the videos of different architectural designs were helpful throughout the course. the creation of design and videos guest lectures The relativity to the real world aspects and makes it relevent and easy to learn in the course.

13. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?

The least valuable was group discussions, it was usually quiet and barely reinforced the ideas of the course. I don't know, I enjoyed every bit of it. nothing Keeping a collection of all our notes and binders. -- snipped -- -- snipped -- Going into groups because most people didn't participate. none none -- snipped -- There was nothing that can be counted as least valuable because everything presented some kind of learning experience. None The group discussions broken off from the class. My group and ta were too quiet, and I didn't benefit from any discussion at all. I felt myself and only a few others were the only ones talking. There was not any unvaluable aspects A lot of readings we is not really intereting Some of the assignments assigned weren't that valuable to me. I did them just to complete them for points or I just didn't do them at all. Although, not all were pointless, a few of them reiterated information from the book, videos, and ted talks so they were helpful to do before the tests. Group meeting. Not much Some of the work felt unnecessary or was assigned in such a way that it would conflict with other course content or other courses in general. -- snipped -- Being there at 8:30m, but you get used to it... Not really have None the movies The least valuable aspects of the course was the lessons that had questionable ties to architecture. For example, the lesson that had us define words from different languages based on their sound had very small ties to architecture as a whole. This might change if there was a more distinct explanation for assignments like this. N/A -- snipped -- I thought the videos showed in class did not teach me much The entire course, i felt, was valuable to me. all of the activities that were done in this course were very helpful and not a waste of time. the group sessions; I suggest rotating groups through out semester between TA's. our TA was nice but very quiet and no one would speak up during group exercises. very disappointing. and the late policy/ sign in sheet. This encourages students to NOT show up for class if they know they will already be late. WORTHLESS. 28. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?

Lance is available by appointment and is easily spotted around the school of architecture premises Learning about the different Architects in the world, and getting to the nitty-gritty of things. Such as learning about the Textural Effects, and different forms of space. I know he's a professional in the field with experience. Gave tips and advice when needed He could word certain concepts in thought provoking ways. He was very professional and obviously knew his material. He had a strong background and knew what he was talking about. Hes knowledgeable and very level headed. He was very helpful when asked about what was going on in class. At first, I wouldn't get it but after talking with him about, I understand completely. He's very helpful. His clear communication and good humor made the class effective and engaging. His explanations of specific parts of the readings made me think of the material in a new light. He's willing to help students outside of class and is very helpful in giving guides on how to improve one's grades. He was enthusiastic about design. That he really knows alot of stuff about the subject of architecture and he shows it to us and also he's very flexible He has a really deep understanding of the subject and did really good in stimulating students to think and work When we would do classwork, Walters and his TAs circled the room to watch us and help us. He responds to emails fast and knows what he's talking about in class. He also gives interesting videos to watch that helped me understand architecture. He was trying to help students who were fall behind. He gave us some extra credit works. Most of the classes had interesting information and it wasn't very difficult to want to learn about what was going on during that class. His attitude toward the subject matter is lax yet also with purpose allowing students to somewhat engage themselves and take on the learning. He responds to his email quickly. He is very informative about assignments and what is due/required; helping students in a friendly way Let me go on my trip and make up the work when i got back The most valuable thing about Lance Walters is that he is willing to help fix problems outside of class if you can meet him in his office hours similar to most professors. The most helpful thing about Lance Walters is his advice for architecture students in how they can improve upon their current projects. nothing at all. He rarely answered my emails, especially when it came to homework assignments. He is good at teaching and talking to large number of people. he knew a lot about the subject and he showed us a background of his personal experiences of this subject. very friendly His care for the students. He knows the subject and tells his experience. He also makes the lessons easy to understand.

29. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?

Lance, is not one that speaks loudly, so it's a bit difficult to Hester him during class -- snipped -- -- snipped -- nothing -- snipped -- He had a quiet voice for such a huge class. -- snipped -- -- snipped -- -- snipped -- -- snipped -- The lack of excitement in his tone of voice. He clearly knows deeply about the subject, but his way of execution lacks confidence at times. -- snipped -- We didn't get to do the things that he said at the beggining of the semester The way he gives lecture is quiet hard to understand . Sometime he speak so soft that I can hard heard anything -- snipped -- Activities we did during the class. I didn't fully understand. -- snipped -- Not much, just that it would be somewhat difficult to hear him sometimes without the use of a microphone. The auditorium needs a mic because sometimes its hard to hear him lecture. -- snipped -- The least valuable thing about Lance Walters is how he uses the grading system. In other words, he tends to dip your grades below much lower than what you normally expect him to. Fortunately, you can always talk to him about it if it makes you worried. This might change as he improves his skill at using the Laulima system to send his assignments out. -- snipped -- -- snipped -- -- snipped -- sometimes there could be unclarity of when things are due and changes made are sometimes not announced thoroughly. his late policy -- snipped -- -- snipped -- * Showing 12 out of 28 survey responses.

Use a microphone, since the course is taught in the auditorium. Clearly iterate from ghr beginning how much the notebook affects our grade. -- snipped -- -- snipped -- Cover more topics in design and architecture I don't know.. Use the microphone more often. Well, I can't say there is any. Minimize the amount of movies watched; the lectures and TEDTalks were much more engaging. Explain some assignments a little more clearly. Confident and louder voice, and talk about personal experience, it adds credibility. There is improvement for guiding the TA's more. Great style of teaching maybe more assignments so students can practice I would have liked to hear your thoughts on the buildings in the videos we watched -- not just the video's thoughts. Also, more group discussions. -- snipped -- -- snipped -- Maybe more interpersonal methods of teaching and somewhat more manageable assignments. Ones that require going out to research and going back the next day with something can be somewhat challenging and can conflict with existing schedules. Don't make online submissions assignments worth so much in so little time. put individual assignment grades on Laulima please -- snipped -- One way to improve this course is to possibly make a lesson about the different types of presentation to students if they are showing their projects to a panel unless this kind of lesson is shown in a related class. -- snipped -- -- snipped -- keep up the great teaching ethics and keep students interested rotating TA's during group sessions -- snipped -- Video talks after movies * Showing 18 out of 26 survey responses.

This is an acceptable course with some points of engagement but it could be a lot more interesting great GREAT! -- snipped -- Very good I liked this course, but I wish it was heavier. usually interesting, sometimes boring It was an interesting elective to take It was very helpful and a great start into architecture and how to think differently, more creatively. I just wish it wasn't right before Arch 101 because most of my energy was drained into that class which left me little focus for this one. Good. Excellent Excellent. Definitely worth the time to take. Not an overload of work, but still enough to keep you focused and learning. Valuable. It's a subject that I'm interested in, but the hour it is slotted and the lack of excitement at times often lessen my desire to learn. Nonetheless, the material covered and assignments given proved to be very useful and helpful in Architecture. Really great class. Great course to take at the beggining of an architectural career Is good how its not very challenging in the way that require student to work harder Arch100 is an easy class to get an A in if you take good notes in class and do the assignments! Good. Everything is depends on how hard we try. If we tried hard, we must learned a lot but if we didn't we didn't learn anything. It was an interesting course and I learned a lot about design and architecture It is a good course overall laying basing foundations for anyone who wishes to pursue architecture or any other design course. As an introduction, it covers the general aspects of design and it's specific components and how they affect the design or the impact as a whole. I like this coarse because it gave me a broader view or architecture. This course gave me a new understanding of architecture and how it relates to art and engineering. He inspires me to continue a profession in architecture. An excellent course, it helped me figure out what pathway I want to take in a potential design career. It my favorite class of this semester, the in-class activities were interesting and informative as were the films. That it is an interesting topic but we didn't get into enough of the projects of architecture like i would have liked to. If you are an student aspiring in the field of Architecture, you must take this course as well as the supplementary Architecture course in order to make the most of it. This is because this is only the lecture while the supplementary course is actually the studio work complete with making your own models. You need both courses in order for them to be effective. Very fun, and enjoyable -- snipped -- -- snipped -- this course was interesting to learn about and fun. it was very interesting and i learned a lot. loved it Could have been more organized. The course could be improved first by providing a microphone. Also group discussions aren't that essential because the atmosphere is awkward. Lastly, the topics could be discussed further through lectures to help with understanding the material. N/A Inspire me with words! I come to class every morning crossing my fingers that we don't watch another video and we actually learn! I like to be challenged to think and engage. The exquisite corpse game was so much fun because I wasn't just sitting in my chair drooling. find a way to make the videos less boring, because watching videos becomes uninteresting after so many of them. Show projects of the studio classes- it might inspire some of us taking the class as an elective to switch majors. I took this class because I wasn't sure of a major yet. Change the time it is offered and do more fun activities like the drawing body parts assignment. Find a better way to assist all the students at one time. More TAs? or get TAs that are pretty knowledgeable about the programs being used Well, I don't think there is any to be improved at all, because so far the class as well as the instructor were good. By minimizing the amount of movies, or increasing discussion about these movies. This course could be improved by including more group talks and encouraging interaction to analyze assignments and readings. An early-morning class should be fun to go to. Binder check due dates should be more clear. Add a field trip? This course could be improve by adding more assignments and talking in more detail about certain things Give student more interesting material and dis use about them more -- snipped -- Explain assignments. The use the microphone or other techniques to convey the instructor's voice and how he chooses to present the material would be important to consider. Also using more engaging assignments that are manageable yet still fun. The auditorium needs a mic to here Walters more clearly. There needs to be a consistant flow of assignments througout the semester. Maybe having a smaller class, but it's not really a problem Better discussion methods in group discussions. More detail about how to do Sections. -- snipped -- This course could possibly be improved if the lecture course had slightly more emphasis about the design philosophy (or if there was a more suitable explanation about the lesson in language). Another way for it to be improved is to make more assignments in shooting photos of different places related to architecture that relates to the current lesson. -- snipped -- I would like the lectures to be improved and the enthusiasm to improve. I would also have liked if the value of the reading were improved because the discussions of the readings in class were not as flowing as i would have liked. there could be a syllabus with specific dates of what is due to help keep track of work. also the study guide could be posted on laulima for easy access. different late policy strategy. maybe absent= loss of grade but tardy does not.. group time adjustments more hands on stuff. i enjoyed sketching Mark note books, let us know how we are doing via notebook. Less Movies more lectures. I dont think this class needs to be improved its very interesting. I could say that he could talk more enthusiastically. He was very good at helping us understand the material being covered during out group sessions. He also gives us questions to make us think further than what is obvious, enabling us to bloom on our own, so to speak. He talks with confidence, showing the amount of knowledge he has on the course. Learning the 3d drawing problems helped a lot Being there to get involved during class was essential because we had to go through the programs in class and its a good help to familiarize ourselves into the computer programs. Rendering tests my patience. Each assignment was valuable, it helped lead into the next one and it got more and more difficult which helped me to progress in the digital realm of architecture. While a computer applications course focusing on programs such as Photoshop and Rhino, I was pleased with the amount of architectural problem solving we were able to attempt. More like an actual studio course, we dealt with space, movement, and experience. I felt like this was my first real architecture course; having a hands on experience with building spaces. The programs we learned to use were most valuable because they allowed us to design things digitally and turn them into reality. Learning the different programs It made me interested more in architecture and studying aspects of architecture not taught in school. Learning how to use rhino effectively and quickly The aspects of the course that were most valuable were using computer programs to enhance and efficiently do projects that would be nearly impossible to do by hand. learning the different programs. the variety of design tools that were introduced gave me a layer of options to use to execute my ideas, it also gave me a basic understanding that will carry on and make learning new programs/methods easier Learning important programs for future endeavors The knowledge of 3d modeling in rhino, and doing quality renderings through v-ray. We learned how to display our ideas through technology very well. We learned how to use the lazer cutter and I think that is very useful for my next studio classes. That we were shown how to do somethings, and then given the time to practice what we had just learned and we were able to ask questions. The hands-on designing experience. New mediums, different concepts. I think one of the valuable aspects is how we applied everything we have learned into our final project. The criteria of this project touches almost every lesson we learned throughout this semester. I don't think there is anything that wasn't "least valuable." I believe everything was valuable to know The course itself was very helpful, however I would've liked to learn more AutoCAD. The assignments were not very interesting/creative since we were just modeling buildings that had already been built. Re doing the same assignments in different aspects .... More variety none! When he had us write down things we do ruitenely and we never used it The least valuable aspect of the course would be using the 3D catch program because I did not understand the use of the program. none! Group work i would wish that the course incorporated more designing and room for creativity Nothing, everything was important the photoshop lessons could have been more useful but we didnt have enough time to get deeper into it. Lance had a write down everything we did in our notebooks and then we didn't even use any of that info. It was pointless. I think he forgot he assigned it to us. N/A Some homework assigned to us did not include specific instructions, but I do understand that this major involves critical thinking.

He took the time to help with any troubleshooting that occurred with our assignments. That he is familiar with the computer programs we were using and was able to help us understand how to use it wisely and deliberately. Also his critiques were much appreciated to improve our work. His friendliness and knowledge on the subject really helped my understanding. Also, I wasn't afraid to approach him if there were problems. His knowledge of the material was very helpful, he understands problems, and is very experienced with computer programs. I commend Walters for the amount of aid received by the students. This was especially during the final project where Walters would come into the studio during out-of-class and out-of-office hours. There was no reason as student/group should have not been able to solve their project problems. His knowledge of how to use the programs was valuable because he would be able to help you create what you wanted to create on the computer. Approachable and understanding He assigns fun assignments and always touches upon interesting subjects The most valuable thing about Lance Walters is his dedication to his students and his willingness to help outside of class. His knowledge in the various computer programs Letting me make up work was nice lance's expertise comes through in his teaching on the programs and topics covered in class. he is very knowledgeable about a range of subjects in the field and he incorporates these things into the assignments, or sometimes by just by mentioning them. he is always easy to approach and very easy to talk to about any questions, ideas, or any type of situations. he is also one of the younger-age professors in the program and is evidently very aware of the current things in the field and encourages his students to get involved. he's technologically-savvy, very organized, a great resource and asset to the architecture program. His moustach he is very knowledgable about the subject, and is always willing to offer advice. Lance played this really cool video about Helvetica. He answered questions well while in class and he was very helpful with any problems you were having with software or your computer. He is pretty open minded and I appreciate that he is available for consult. Lance Walters sacrifices his time to help us with our project. He cares for the student when he/she is having a difficult time, as shown during our final project. He was very knowledgable in all the programs we covered in class, and also architecture in general. Very understanding, and presented the assignments in a clear and understanding way

29. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?

Nothing That he would leave right after class while some of us would like help Sometimes I felt that there could've been more explanation or a more in depth lecture on certain programs. Other times I felt that more could have been taught in the 3 hours given. I felt that most of the time I was sitting there wondering what more I could do. Sometimes it would take a while to get a response for an email, but other than that he was a very helpful teacher. Repetition of some material wasn't very helpful, like the rendering of the Barcelona Pavilion got old after rendering and re-rendering for two weeks. Not clear on what exactly was needed none The least valuable thing about Lance Walters is his email responses. nothing! I sometimes didn't quite know what he wanted us to do for the assignments Hes kinda strange sometes, hard toread, butcool No comment Sometime he moved a little too quickly, and it was hard to keep up, and he was hard to get in touch with via email. It is difficult to reach him through email and it can take several days for a reply. Frequent trips.

30. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.

He could maybe go into depth with the other programs he introduced a schedule of what we will be working on for the week 1 TA isn't enough, especially since the TA and professor don't always see eye to eye. And since there are so many students its easier having at least 2 or 3 TAs to go around the class. I think giving assignments that involve more creativity would be more beneficial because it would make learning the computer programs a little more interesting. none it was fun. the TAs were great. Perhaps it would be better if the assignment submissions were more organized. Being a bit more clear about where we stand in the class along the way would be.extremely helpful Keep on truckin' Prof. Walters was a great professor, he explained things thoroughly and took time to answer questions in class. Slow down in the beginning, since it is our first time using Rhino. I know it seems like you are going slow, but we have a hard time keeping up.

I enjoyed this class Time consuming yet effective since we will be using these computer programs 9/10 Very helpful, insightful, and fun. Excellent. While exceptionally challenging, I enjoyed this class the most out of all my architecture classes. Within this semester, I have learned more about architecture than in the first year. I feel now I have a greater understanding about how architecture relates to its user. With the programs I have learned (i.e. Rhino 3D), I feel that I am not limited to any design. I can create and design any structure I imagine, and effectively display it. I enjoyed this course because it taught us how to create things in a digital environment then turn them into physical models. I felt that everything we learned in this class was very valuable to our future careers. Excellent It covers programs that will greatly benefit its students for professional use. Excellent and lots of fun! Pretty good overall, I feel that making the final project be a group project wasn't all that great for it allows for lazy group member to much off of hard working group members good course, explores a lot of subjects in short amount of time. just enough to gain a foundation to where the students can use what is learned and take it further on their own. Ridiculouslycrammed at some times, but goodoverall I am glad i had the opportunity to partake in this class, i learned a lot. It was fun and engaging and i learned a lot It helped me can a better understanding and how to use computer programs that are used in the field. Good Pretty good. This course has raised my curiosity in programming. I am glad to learn how to model designs in my own computer to help vision my project. This will definitely be helpful in future career. 37. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.

I liked that "Marshall" was also there to help during class. The class was helpful and important for us to learn the programs, so we may take advantage of it during our future classes. We should of focused more with autocad since most firms use that program More frequent grade updates so students know how they are doing in the class. It could be improved by having less repetition in the assignments, and also creating assignments that are more than just recreating buildings that were created. I enjoyed taking a physical model that we built then working backwards to create a digital model. none This course could be improved by better organization in assignment submission. Also, it would be better if there were more assignments where there was a little design freedom. I am not sure. The way the course ran went well to me! No more CNC machine, it takes far too long and wasts time that could be spent working on the projects there is a lot of programs and material covered in the course but i would still suggest incorporating more room for design. i feel as architecture students we are constantly craving ways to express our creativity and are always trying to improve our work and ideas. without much of that going on for an entire semester it makes me feel out of rhythm and that I'm not advancing in ways that I would like to. I feel like no matter what we are doing there can be things incorporated to keep us using this part of our thinking. Maybe not quite sorushed I never really figured out v-ray. And have no suggestions on how you should teach it better. But i will say that it should be taught differently, so students understand it better. Slowing down a little bit and making sure that everyone understands what is going on. I also would have liked to get grades sooner, just to see if the work I was turning in was acceptable. And maybe we could have in-class assignments that were graded quickly to see what areas we needed to work on. Introductions to new materials and tools, such as the CNC machine, could be better explained. Nothing really. I was hoping to use the 3D printer as well. To my belief, I do not believe that this class can be improved in any way.

It was fun while it lasted n/a Keep the final project: low-pressure, high-volume structure. Encourage students to stay away from rectilinear shapes as this project is not limited by building materials or weight. Keep the 4 person groups. It teaches people to work together in an architectural environment. Have a pre-final project (maybe study models) where students are placed in predetermined groups. in-class tutorials Learning new programs such as grasshopper, which taught how to further permutate rhino models. Not much of anything. Learning Rhino was very useful. Grasshopper was useful as well, but it'll take some critical thinking in order to use it. Grasshopper the different tools used in grasshopper to aid in design. Grasshopper & Rhino Model I gained a better understanding of the programs we used and I have more drive to take the initiative to continue my learning, on my own and in class. Assignments with criteria to be achieved All of the hands-on 'here's the objective, try to get there!' work.

New programs and new commands for rhino use. Nothing. Lenient instructor, but has expectations of students; good balance. Rhino and rendering. Thought we would go into animation as well, however time was an issue as we only were able to meet once a week. As a teacher, not organized. Would've liked some explicit direction/information rather than having situational instruction, day-to-day guidance. Printed guides/tutorials and assigning Grasshopper objectives would've been great. Would rather have focused more on rendering like proposed at the beginning of the semester. None Miss 3 class time Sometimes it is hard to figure out how to access that brain and to use the force.

Wanted to learn some rendering in either vray, 3ds max, or other An extra class outside of normal class as well. Prepare for class. Plan how to use the class time better. Less skipped classes. None better explain each component better and in detail. Handout and tutorial on subject matter. Exp. Grasshopper tutorial on how to used each command. A little more structure or assignments when teaching a program like Grasshopper. I understand his logic that such a program requires self learning and prediction to be utilized on your own, but perhaps being challenged with several broad assignments or requiring several definitions for the same problem could have stimulated the class. Perhaps a bit too open-ended. Sometimes I was confused about what we were doing and where we were going

Great course, however must have at least a moderate level of understanding of rhino. I wish I had taken something else. Great course. Great it was a really interesting course and i liked how it expanded my knowledge of grasshopper. This course is good, but I still want to cover all the program we have set out to do according to the syllabus. There was more promised on the syllabus than was actually covered in class. I appreciate some of the new commands I learned in Rhino and the basics of Grasshopper, and I know it will be useful, so I am not upset. However I think that most of the class reached a mental block at the complexity that just could not be overcome or taught by the end of the semester.

make it a shorter class twice a week. Teacher needs to prepare for class and be more organized. GH is a difficult program to use but the course itself could have been more challenging. expand beyond grasshopper. play more with kangaroo and all the other plugins for programming. more programming with codes. Tutorial on grasshopper command In regards to Grasshopper, more assignments with broad or specific goals to be reached or require another definition (slightly modified or completely different) to the same problem. If it does require self learning, perhaps more student presentations after an assignment is done to provoke collective knowledge.

conceptual design phase. formulating a set of ideas and concepts that we were then able to analyze and develop into actual structures and buildings. The use of computer technology and programs to look into another way of architecture was amazing. Each way of architecture is very important but its cool to learn new things especially the things that are the future of the profession. desk critiques and instructor talking to us in the beginning of every class The process work that we compiled over the entire semester were beneficial for the final product in our projects. Designing a building in a climate completely new for us, was very valuable for me because I've only developed in Hawaii. The process we went through in developing a design solution

Nothing was not valuable. none Some of the process work seemed like they were of no value when we were in the process of completing them, but after putting all of the work together it started to make sense. Spending too much time on a new program "Grasshopper" when all we did was a simple model manipulation. the last phase of the project seemed a little short and abrupt.

easy to discuss a project with. easy to meet outside of class. quick to answer questions. He is amazingly knowledgeable with the computational side of architecture as well as the others. Benefiting off of his knowledge of the computational side is quite valuable. teaching guiding from concept to physical manifestation of design, having to work with flexibility in terms of time management He strives to see the project from the students perspective and connects his ideas with yours which helps in the design process when you get stuck. New style of design and different aspect of looking at architecture. He didn't force his own ideas upon our deigns and really let us develop ours own design process.

Its pretty good, Hes getting used to the hawaii life style and the way we work here and thats good. The amount of work is heavy, but necessary and very beneficial. Teaching style is awesome. Lance is a great instructor and I would definitely consider taking courses from him in the future. I think lance's teaching style is effective in letting us really come into our own design wise.

an excellent studio for the final semester of 3rd year, preparing students to move into the doctorate program at SoA. Great course! great preparation of students to grad level The course was very informative and I feel as if I have become a stronger designer. Essential, and a very good program this year, and good design opportunities. I have learned alot this semester from computer programs to design development. Skills that will set me apart from other designers.

Although dates typically change during the semester, providing an outline of what we will be doing later on in the semester would be nice. It doesn't have to be anything specific, but just the overall idea of what we might cover later on. I don't really think i can think of anything to improve this course, it was all new to me. More time to complete assignments. No last minute emails for assignments and there were no responses to emails. Maybe have the project durations changed. The second phase of the project was a little short.

Opportunity to use fabrication equipment as well as learn some basic digital technology applications/extension. By physically working with wood many of its integral properties became very apparent, it also initiate discussion among students.

The course direction was loose (unstructured), and therefore the intent was not too clear. Required time was more than that of a typical 3 credit elective. (Perhaps more suitable for an 4 credit elective?) 1 hr instructions and 3 hour lab? or 2 hours each

Regarding the CNC routing, the class needs systematic programs to train students by providing detail tutorials with workshop programs instead of just quick showing an example individually. There were too many students who use laser cutter during the class hour in the shop at the end of the semester. It disturbs using laser cutter and CNC router during the class hour and makes time consuming. I think more teaching experience will make the instructor more understandable to the students. By Which I mean the knowledge will be transferred better with improved teaching methods. At times the communication wasn't clear, I would have liked a better organised structure for the course or more choices to approach wood as a material, process of design and fabrication.

It was very impressive class. Intensive, achievable with assistance from the fabrication workshop.

Provide lectures how to utilize laser cutting machine and CNC rougher efficiently by providing tutorials instead of just providing plenty of shop hours. Without such efficient lectures, students struggle to learn the technology by hovering a lot of time in the shop. Although I heartily enjoyed, I am unsure of the appropriateness of the choice of fabrication of musical instruments as a part of architectural course work. Perhaps there are other architectural applications or modeling that could be used in its place? Or perhaps leave the option for students to choose the modeling/ fabrication object?

Learning the different programs and soft wares that will help us in model- making, renderings, and visual aids in our projects. The most valuable part of this class was the ability to learn how all the different programs could be used together. I learned many different programs and useful tools that can use in the future. I think all programs were valuable to learn. They each have a specific usage for the field. I really learned how to use rhino, that is the program I know best because so much time was spent on it. Learning to use different digital applications. I felt that I gained a lot of appreciation of design through the use of the fabrication machines. The Rhino program seemed the most useful and easiest to use. I really like this program. Photoshop and Indesign are also very useful, but I was already familiar with those programs. Every program that was taught in class is valuable to learn in being an architect. the programs Every program that we had learned in this semester. I could know how do I treat lots of computer program skills ! The fact that the course covered so many different programs was very helpful for the future. Everything covered in the course was very valuable. Programs The course is an very important course because it is something that architects all over the world use, there fore everything we have learned in this class this past semester is all valued. The programs that we will be using in the future such as Rhino, 3ds Max. Learning mainstream programs The most valuable aspect of this course came in the form of class learning as there was no TA. as a class we grew closer together. I really loved how we used programs to make real life, 3-d models. I found that learning Rhino will be effective in helping us in future courses at the School of Architecture in class tutorials The course work and class exercises.

11. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?

n/a I think some og the programs didn't have enough time spent to fully understand. Yes we got the basics, but I feel like there should have been more excersizes to really master the tools. The cost to use the cnc machine, 3d printer, and laser cutter is expensive. Some of the basic lessons in certain software were review for many of us. We didn't do much with Illustrator and it is very similar to Indesign. In my opinion, we only need one of those programs. 3ds Max is a very interesting program with better quality imaging, rendering, and has video abilities, but I feel like most of it was a more complicated repeat of Rhino. Everything taught in class is valuable but the way it was presented and taught wasn't valuable. the entire grading system and communication with the students. no n/a I don't find anything that is not valuable. n/a everything was valuable, there was not enough time. we could have used inclass time more effectively. I thought that learning so much about Photoshop, InDesign, and 3DS Max were least valuable. Because we went over these programs that are not used in the architecture field as much as programs such as CADD and Revit we did not have enough time to cover CADD and Revit and I think this will hurt us a great deal in the future. No TA to help the professor out with teaching

26. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?

He was able to teach us a number of programs such as Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Grasshopper, Autocad, 3DS Max, Sketchup and how to use these programs to create 3D models using the CNC machine, Lasercutter, and 3d Printer. He gave tutorials to be familiar with the tools of the different programs. Very knowledgable about the different computer programs and technology that is associated with it. He also explains the several different ways things can be done. He is very knowledgeable in this subject. Answered all questions and solved most problems that student came across. I really do think he has a great knowledge about the subject. He understands the programs amazing well. He's a smart guy with a great personality. He is very knowledgeable and answers questions well. Lance Walters knows a lot about this computer programming. Repeating the steps he makes to create something in a program until we all have an understanding of the steps. He knows what he is doing when working with the computer programs taught in class. introducing us to these programs that we will use in the future. His computer skills The amount of knowledge he has about the programs he taught. He always come to us and then solve out problems in our computer and ways to use programings. Lance struggled at times when trying to help everyone in the class. Of course it wasn't completely fair for Lance because there were no TA's. Lance did a great job under the circumstances given. Lance Walters knowledge of the material was most valuable. n/a What i found most helpful was the knowledge that he has. He really knows about computer applications Checks in class if you need help he has a through knowledege about the subject and is usually interested in students problems. he is very smart and has a lot of knowledge. Lance was very enthusiastic about Rhino when the class first began and it helped me learn Rhino somewhat. He knows a lot about the programs he teaches, and the assignments he gives are valuable and help to reinforce the things he says in class. He was available for consultation outside of class regarding how to run certain things in the programs we used. Additionally, going around the room and helping the students out individually was effective for learning.

27. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?

He was pretty softspoken in class. He did Grading system was not clear. Things like how many points an assignment is worth or grading scales were never discussed. The course work was never returned with a grade so it was hard to know what to improve on. For some assignments there was a little confusion due to only announcing it verbally, rather than posting on Laulima(which was the norm). He is hard to get a hold of, when not in class. The assignments are not very clear and I don't know exactly how we are graded or what the criteria is. None. Sometimes sped through some lessons, but was willing to review when we needed it. The thing that I least valued was the fact that we needed to download programs constantly and when we had a problem we were basically screwed for class. He never or rarely replied back to student emails. We would ask questions that would never get answered until the next day we have class so that we are able to ask him in person. Not good for when we have questions about an assignment over the weekend. He only seems to talk to the front of the room and it is hard to see him since he sits down at his desk. How he dealt with grading and assignments. Unorganized. lack of communication and overall organization. no The least valuable aspect of Lance Walters was his communication. n/a What i felt wasn't helpful was that sometimes he teaches way too fast so we cannot keep up with the steps that was done. Because not all of us have worked with the previous programs. Jumping back and forth with programs Not available for help much does not answer emails in a timely manner, grading system was not covered and grades were only given once in the semester and not broken down for you. unless you have his attention, he may not necessarily pay attention to you If you had any questions, he got a little edgy. He would always accuse us of not paying attention in class whenever we had questions. He was not very prepared for class and he wasted a great deal of the class time because he did not seem to have a plan when he came in. He jumped back and forth between programs and did not stick to the plan that he had originally laid out, being that he was going to teach Rhino, Grasshopper, CADD, and then touch on some Revit. We spent a great deal of time doing a "Sails" project which in the end he did not consider any of our designs for the final Sails that went up in the courtyard. He would not always put up the assignment but hold us responsible for it when it came for it to be due. Some assignments he would not post onto Laulima until 8-7 hours before it was due. He did not have a set grading system it seemed and he would allow some students to turn in late work while other were not allowed and he told should drop the class. He did not keep us up to date with our grades and when asked he would ignore the questions about grades. If we were doing bad in the class we would not know so certain students did the same level work over and over and did not find out till it was too late that they had an F in the class and that they would not be able to recover from it. He is very hard to contact because he is rarely in his office and does not respond to emails. Lance seemed very unprepared and did not know how to teach a class. The way he teaches in class is very ineffective. He had no TA to help him teach.

28. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.

Provide a schedule of what will be taught in class each day or week so that we know what programs to have ready before class. There were numerous times where he just told us to download in class but with the slow internet connection it would take long to download thus wasting class time. I think he should provide us a hardcopy or electronic copy of tutorials of what was taught in class. The only way I could see improvements to this class would be to have teaching assistants because lance is so spread thin. -I think either the room needs to be reorganized or he needs a microphone. It is hard to hear in the middle back and even though he may think we are not listening, it really is just hard to follow what he is saying. -I think he should clarify his assignment requirements and give back feedback individually for improvement. It might be a good idea to get some T.A.s who can help give that feedback. -Even though we follow in class, when we go home a lot of times we forget the specific details to some of the steps, I think it would be good to create PDFs of the steps. He did so for one of the project and it helped a great deal. Lessons more well organized. I came to notice that Lance had his favorites in class and helped them with everything they asked and responded to every thing they said. When it came to the other students (I was in this group) he would ignore our problems sometimes and would just continue going if we had a problem dragging us behind. I think that Lance should be a little more fair and should help everyone. Also he could go a little slower on tutorials because it can be a bit confusing. I feel like he did the best he could with helping everyone in the class to gain an understanding of the programs and to give individual attention to each student, but I feel like it would benefit Lance and all of us students if he were to have a couple of TAs. He can't help everyone at once or everyone in one class period and he needs all of us to be on the same page everyday. Also, I was disappointed to find out that we never went over the two most important programs in the professional field of Architecture as of right now: AutoCAD and Revit. We talked about learning Revit and he gave us an extra credit opportunity to attend a Revit lecture. However we never learned those programs in class and I feel that those two programs are the ones we will need to know for school projects and for the professional field once we graduate. 3ds Max is useless compared to those two programs in the professional field. Lastly, it was never clear to me what the grading system was like. I understand the whole grading based on effort and not being compared other student's level of understanding. But I wanted to know the overall grading standards for each assignment. There should be a podium and stool instead of a low lying desk so that he is easy to see the teacher and will cause him to speak louder. He mentioned in the beginning of the semester that the class wouldn't have any TAs. Having TAs in the class would really help considering the size of the class and he can only get to so many students at a time. Speak to the class not to the computer screen. The classroom is divided by a make shift wall because there is another class that uses that space. People in the back of our class have constantly been scolded for being loud when in fact it is the other class that we share the room with making the noise. Update Laulima with grades more often so that students can see their current grades not just their grades mid semester. If you start to post assignments on Laulima please be consistent and not give out some assignments verbally because after a while we expect assignments to be online so consistency is also crucial. Please answer emails in a timely manner, some people may send last minute emails but it isn't fair to those who do it in a timely manner. Please talk to the whole class not just the front row. Have a clearer layout of coursework and how much they are worth. Also keep students updated with grades. Effective communication makes the class that much more interesting. Lack of organization leaves people skeptical of your teaching methods. Though your skills in Architecture related computer programs is impressive. You lack the necessary skills to teach students well. Students in this class were left wondering how and what the criteria of the assignments were. You have great potential in becoming a better teacher. There is no doubt that you have the necessary skills to teach Arch 235. Other students and I would appreciate a teacher that is a little more on it. We can get through lessons quicker and more effectively this way. And also have learned programs like Revit and AutoCad Get a couple TA's if possible with a class bigger than maybe 10 students. -Use a microphone when he teaches. -Some lessons should be reviewed slowly. -Get a T.A! no It would help to be more willing to communicate. Classmates and I would email Lance Walters questions about assignments or about why we cannot make it to class because of family/personal matters. Rarely to never Lance would reply to the email. When approached about the matter during class he would say he saw the email, then discuss the matter then. Grading assignments and posting grading on more timing matter. We received one grade check half way through the semester. It would have been nice to know what I was getting in the class during the semester to know the grade of my work produced. He would not have to go through figuring out the overall grade, but at least assignments turned in. programs provided for students Make a clear grading system and give grades for each assignment instead of just one grade throughout the whole semester need TA more time needs to be spent on subjects to ensure people know the subject throughly Maybe speak louder so that everyone in the room can hear, because sometimes it could get quite noisy with the amount of students we had in the class and also, sometimes, the students in the other studio in the back of the room could get a little noisy. I think that Lance should have a clear grading system in his work and keep students up to date with it. Lance should also make sure that it is easier to get a hold of him with any questions regarding not only questions on the assignments but grades as well. Lance also should have a lesson plan or an idea of what he wants to accomplish instead of just "Feeling like using photoshop today". Manage class time better, there was a lot of sitting around. And walking around helping each student one by one is very time consuming and not very beneficial

34. My overall evaluation of this course is...

This course was fun to learn of the different technological improvements and creations in architectural programs. Excellent course and I would recommend lance to any other students considering taking the class. I liked the class because we learned a lot of new and useful things. The variety of different programs are valuable. I think the goal and intentions for the course was a good idea, it just needs some tweaking as to how to follow through with those ideas. Lance really knows what he is talking about and has the potential to be a great professor. I feel like the assignments were very obscure and I was confused a lot of times what was due. I learned a lot in this class. Things that I already know wasn't enough. It is a good course to familiarize yourself with a variety of software. As a course overall I didn't think it was very helpful. The course was cramming way too many things into a short time. It didn't give enough time for the projects that kept coming and for us to completely get what was going on. It's an important class to have. The future of architecture is in computer programs, but we need to learn the right programs. Lance Walters is knowledgeable in the course material being taught, but he still needs work on his teaching skills. Since this is more of a visual class, dealing with 3D computer programs such as Rhino and 3DS Max, more examples would be helpful so that students can have an idea of what he wants instead reading the assignment paper, which can be confusing. Tutorials, like the ones done for the final project, would be helpful if put on Laulima that way students have something to reference to and can review what had been taught in class that day. Good class, just needs to be more organized. good I really enjoyed the course, the course really should be a year long. There is so much useful information that just can't be covered with the allotted time. needs to be organized in assigning assignment and consistency is a must. Overall, even though there were a lot of things that I did not like or felt like needed to be improved. I felt that it was one of my most important architectural classes that I have taken so far in the SOA. It was a good course subject matter that was covered was very important but the grading system was not clear. necessary course to take, it needs to be taken to advance in this field It was a great course if only our teacher put more thought into class because a lot of the time his due dates for projects were terribly unrealistic and because so many students had to use the same modeling machines, the availability of the machines were tight, which led to groups not being able to get their projects finished on time. If our teacher had a little more experience teaching, this course would have been great. I was very disappointed in this course because we were not taught programs that will help us in the architecture field. We learned how to render drawings but not how to create them in any program but Rhino. This class did not challenge me in any way and during our 3 hour classes Lance only taught for about an hour of them. The rest of the class time he spent talking to the same 5 students about things not related to the assignments or what he had learned that day. It was a very interesting course, and I would have loved to learn more, but the presentation of the class material and assignments didn't encourage that. Sitting in class was not stimulating or exciting. Excellent

35. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.

This course would have set a better learning environment if there were teaching assistants because with a class of 50 students it was hard to ask Lance for help with so much students needing help too. Due to the fact that it a a technological course students come across problems and the teacher wasnt always available to everyone to help. Having TA's may help the class run smoother from the instructors standpoint. I basically said everything that I think needs improvements in number 28. There should be a TA for the class. The teacher need to slow down a little bit sometimes. It was difficult to finish group projects in short amounts of time. A list of software should be presented before the course begins so we can avoid wasted time downloading software during class. TAs could have helped with student problems that were very frustrating. The course should stick with certain programs and not skip all over because it made it hard to come to class prepared. Teach us programs that will benefit us in school and in the professional field. The teacher was good, he knows how to work the programs, and tries to help us in class, but we need TAs to assist him in this course. Tutorials put on Laulima of what had been gone over in class that day. When demonstrating during class go slower and talk to the class not to your computer screen. I believe that having TAs in the class would help tremendously. Organize and more communication. This course would probably be better by have at least one TA for any semester taught for ARCH 235. no return works and projects with grade regularly, so that we would know what to improve or do better. Some things that can be done to improve the course is having a grading system that we all will know how our work is graded. Making sure that everyone is following along. And finally maybe learning a few other programs because we did not learn AutoCad and Revit which I feel should be one of the most important programs and we did not get to learn it. Go more in-depth on programs. n/a There needs to be acess to help at anytime to either lance or a ta who knows the subject matter well. Have a TA or make the class size smaller. Its hard to learn programs when there are so many people and a tiny projector and a soft spoken teacher. This course could be improved with a set lesson plan. Lance should make sure that he lets everybody know their grades so they are able to keep up with what they need to improve on. Class needs to be more engaging, and the criteria needs to be concrete and more organized. It was hard to know what was due or what we were going to be covering in class. Sometimes, in the middle of class, it was hard to know what we were doing. There was a lot of downtime and filling up that time will make class more valuable and useful. I believe this course could be improved if there was a microphone for him to use in the class. Sometimes it was hard to hear him.

This could have been a great course but I didn't feel like I was helped to reach my full potential and I am not happy with how it turned out. Learning Rhino better. Learning new computer programs The small little workshops that is held during class to serve as a tutorials for things we need to use in our projects were most valuable to me. Tutorial sessions in grasshopper, photoshop, and vray.

26. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?

His knowledge on Rhino, and how he was easily available for outside studio help. Lance is very knowledgeable in the field of Architecture. He knows a lot about different computer programs and shows how we can use them to our advantage when creating architecture. He has experience in architecture and he shares some of the things he does out in the field. Also he has full knowledge of the programs and technologies that we are going to use in studio and possibly in our architectural career. Offers advice and respects each individual's goals and visions for their projects. Tries to explain ways in which we can develop our ideas further and push us towards conclusions in our design.

27. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?

Not having him in class when I have questions about my design. He doesn't attend to everyone. He stays with a student for a significant amount of time and sometimes skip some students to check up another student he talked to earlier.

N/A perhaps managing class time better. It would have been nice to receive more one on one time to discuss and ask questions.

34. My overall evaluation of this course is...

Great. If I could take Lance again in another studio I would. exposure to new teaching methods and different tools for architecture made the class challenging but interesting at the same time. The course was enjoyable. The projects and the direction we went at was great and I feel I learned a lot during this class. quite good, perhaps one of the more enjoyable studios I have had where I feel that the professor generally does maintain interest in the progress and ideas of projects. During one on one time, did offer usable advice to which aided in furthering the development of my design and understanding. I appreciate the ability to explore ideas and the given encouragement to try and execute them, despite the hesitations and limitations I feel.

N/A He should limit his time between students. I feel that he is not able to check on everyone's work because he stays with one student for a very long time.
