12. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
- Learning new programs from a professor who is very comfortable using these programs.
Learning the various applications that are commonly used in the field. I found the teaching style of the live demos, followed by homework focused on that particular feature was helpful to overall learning.
13. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Short time class.
- Learning programs like Rhinoceros and Photoshop is good but going into programs like Autocad and Revit would have been more useful since they are used more in the field.
In general, I think the class frequency (3x / week, 50 mins each session) was challenging. I would have preferred a longer duration once or twice a week. Also, meeting 3x / week with homework due each day was challenging for those who work and adjusting the overall schedule would have allowed for more time to complete assignments.

28. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
- Knowledge of the digital applications and connecting them to architecture
I appreciated the overall direction, which was not too detailed or prescriptive. This teaching approach encouraged me to find alternative ways to completing the assignments and through this process, learning more than I would have if there was a very prescriptive teaching style. I think there was sufficient freedom that allowed me to explore things on my own.
29. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
- N/A
Unclear on the amount of autonomy regarding iterating through the assignments. In the first class, strict guidelines on due dates and attendance were communicated. In hindsight, I wish I reached out early on to understand the parameters and whether or not iterating through assignments would be acceptable.
30. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
- Personally, having all classes be lectures (since class time is limited) rather than having some classes as workdays would have been more helpful.
-Communicate that it is okay to iterate through assignments past the due date. This definitely helped me improve the models where I was able to iterate. -Office hours -Feedback on assignments - we started doing this later in the semester. I think it was great to see work from others and to receive feedback from peers. Maybe spend the first 10 mins of each class reviewing the assignments from others. -I would have liked to get exposure to another drawing program like AutoCAD for comparison with Rhino. -More optional assignments

Great, interesting, and stimulating.
I learned a lot! While the pace at times was hectic and some of the assignments challenging to get done in two evenings, I felt challenged. Overall, it was well worth the time. The skills learned in this class will be valuable as I progress through the program. I would like to see a sequel to this class that focuses on improving our skills to ultimately put together client proposals.
37. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
- Same as #30. Also, learning programs used more often in firms would be more beneficial (e.g. Autocad).
- Longer class period, less sessions per week - I would love to work on a project from start to finish - planning, designing, and pitching your idea. Maybe having bits of the project due at each class.

I hesitate to say this because I would not have been able to accommodate both, but maybe making studio and this class a mandatory pairing. There seemed to be a lot of synergy between studio and this class.

The amount of coursework that was covered was extremely beneficial in learning everything possible in such a short amount of time.
- The progression of learning design methods for spaces of less structure to spaces that are more structured

Some areas seemed imbalanced. I believe it would have been more helpful to spend more time on physically modeling than on drawing.

Lance was very effective in helping us solve problems and encouraged different methods of critically thinking about many aspects of architecture. He was very kind and eager to help us deal with challenges when we asked the right questions.

His passion and knowledge about architecture.
29. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Although we worked on projects in stages, not every project that was assigned was immediately clear. It would have been helpful to have written assignment instructions and due dates. Also some material could be better communicated to the entire class instead of individually. Maybe more informal pinups or group desk crits would be helpful.
- Vague descriptions on what is due. It leaves room for creative interpretation but as someone who is in their first semester of architecture, more details would have helped to build a better foundation.
He didn't appear to have a clear outline of what project requirements were from the beginning of the course. For those who have other classes and work, when he would assign what was due, he often didn't give enough notice so we could manage our time well. He would assign something on Monday for submittal on a Wednesday, and the amount of work required to complete it was too much for the timeframe. His expectation of us working on assignments without taking into consideration outside commitments was unrealistic.

Having the assignments already known from the beginning of the class would be helpful. Being better prepared for the course.

I learned great deal over the entire course. Although extremely work intensive, this class helped me to learn as much as I possibly could over an entire semester.
It was a great way to be introduced really quickly into the subject
37. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
I think that the digital/physical modeling section of the course could be extended further and the drawing portion of the course could be shortened. We only had about two or three weeks at the end of the course to learn to focus on and digitally representing our project.
This course could be improved by introducing more insight into architecture as a whole (e.g. informational sources to be aware of). It could also be improved by shortening the first project (least structural) and lengthening the last project, which was more structural and therefore, needs more attention to details.

Lance made a comment about not wanting us to sleep during the last week before final project being due. I find that unprofessional and that mindset is archaic.

Well, just that everything we've learned throughout this class has helped out a lot especially of how it connected with what I was learning in my other classes as well. Just the thought of design and what other architects go through to gain experience and how they some of the buildings are not architecturally based. So far this class has taught me a lot about architects and what it is all about, the inspiration and so forth. Also of how the little things we do not pay attention to, are the most important of all.

Some of the assignments assigned weren't that valuable to me. I did them just to complete them for points or I just didn't do them at all. Although, not all were pointless, a few of them reiterated information from the book, videos, and ted talks so they were helpful to do before the tests.
There was nothing that can be counted as least valuable because everything presented some kind of learning experience.
The group discussions broken off from the class. My group and ta were too quiet, and I didn't benefit from any discussion at all. I felt myself and only a few others were the only ones talking.

the group sessions; I suggest rotating groups through out semester between TA's. our TA was nice but very quiet and no one would speak up during group exercises. very disappointing. and the late policy/ sign in sheet. This encourages students to NOT show up for class if they know they will already be late. WORTHLESS. Students can still learn a lot even when they show up late.

He was very helpful when asked about what was going on in class. At first, I wouldn't get it but after talking with him about, I understand completely. He's very helpful.
He responds to emails fast and knows what he's talking about in class. He also gives interesting videos to watch that helped me understand architecture.
Most of the classes had interesting information and it wasn't very difficult to want to learn about what was going on during that class.

If you are an student aspiring in the field of Architecture, you must take this course as well as the supplementary Architecture course in order to make the most of it. Inspire me with words! I come to class every morning crossing my fingers that we don't watch another video and we actually learn! I like to be challenged to think and engage. The exquisite corpse game was so much fun because I wasn't just sitting in my chair drooling.

It made me interested more in architecture and studying aspects of architecture not taught in school.
While a computer applications course focusing on programs such as Photoshop and Rhino, I was pleased with the amount of architectural problem solving we were able to attempt. More like an actual studio course, we dealt with space, movement, and experience. I felt like this was my first real architecture course; having a hands on experience with building spaces.
That we were shown how to do somethings, and then given the time to practice what we had just learned and we were able to ask questions.
I think one of the valuable aspects is how we applied everything we have learned into our final project. The criteria of this project touches almost every lesson we learned throughout this semester.

He assigns fun assignments and always touches upon interesting subjects
I commend Walters for the amount of aid received by the students. This was especially during the final project where Walters would come into the studio during out-of-class and out-of-office hours. There was no reason as student/group should have not been able to solve their project problems.
He answered questions well while in class and he was very helpful with any problems you were having with software or your computer.
Lance Walters sacrifices his time to help us with our project. He cares for the student when he/she is having a difficult time, as shown during our final project.

lance's expertise comes through in his teaching on the programs and topics covered in class. he is very knowledgeable about a range of subjects in the field and he incorporates these things into the assignments, or sometimes by just by mentioning them. he is always easy to approach and very easy to talk to about any questions, ideas, or any type of situations. he is also one of the younger-age professors in the program and is evidently very aware of the current things in the field and encourages his students to get involved. he's technologically-savvy, very organized, a great resource and asset to the architecture program.
he is very knowledgable about the subject, and is always willing to offer advice.
His friendliness and knowledge on the subject really helped my understanding. Also, I wasn't afraid to approach him if there were problems.

Excellent
Excellent. While exceptionally challenging, I enjoyed this class the most out of all my architecture classes. Within this semester, I have learned more about architecture than in the first year. I feel now I have a greater understanding about how architecture relates to its user. With the programs I have learned (i.e. Rhino 3D), I feel that I am not limited to any design. I can create and design any structure I imagine, and effectively display it.
It helped me can a better understanding and how to use computer programs that are used in the field.
This course has raised my curiosity in programming. I am glad to learn how to model designs in my own computer to help vision my project. This will definitely be helpful in future career.

there is a lot of programs and material covered in the course but i would still suggest incorporating more room for design. i feel as architecture students we are constantly craving ways to express our creativity and are always trying to improve our work and ideas. without much of that going on for an entire semester it makes me feel out of rhythm and that I'm not advancing in ways that I would like to. I feel like no matter what we are doing there can be things incorporated to keep us using this part of our thinking.
No more CNC machine, it takes far too long and wasts time that could be spent working on the projects
I never really figured out v-ray. And have no suggestions on how you should teach it better. But i will say that it should be taught differently, so students understand it better.

Keep the final project: low-pressure, high-volume structure. Encourage students to stay away from rectilinear shapes as this project is not limited by building materials or weight. Keep the 4 person groups. It teaches people to work together in an architectural environment. Have a pre-final project (maybe study models) where students are placed in predetermined groups. Then for the final project, allow students to chose their own teammates. This pre-final shows who is willing to work, and who works well with others.

There was more promised on the syllabus than was actually covered in class. I appreciate some of the new commands I learned in Rhino and the basics of Grasshopper, and I know it will be useful, so I am not upset. However I think that most of the class reached a mental block at the complexity that just could not be overcome or taught by the end of the semester.

GH is a difficult program to use but the course itself could have been more challenging.

The process work that we compiled over the entire semester were beneficial for the final product in our projects.
conceptual design phase. formulating a set of ideas and concepts that we were then able to analyze and develop into actual structures and buildings.
Designing a building in a climate completely new for us, was very valuable for me because I've only developed in Hawaii.
The use of computer technology and programs to look into another way of architecture was amazing. Each way of architecture is very important but its cool to learn new things especially the things that are the future of the profession.

Maybe have the project durations changed. The second phase of the project was a little short.
More time to complete assignments. No last minute emails for assignments and there were no responses to emails.
Although dates typically change during the semester, providing an outline of what we will be doing later on in the semester would be nice. It doesn't have to be anything specific, but just the overall idea of what we might cover later on.
I don't really think i can think of anything to improve this course, it was all new to me.

Opportunity to use fabrication equipment as well as learn some basic digital technology applications/extension. By physically working with wood many of its integral properties became very apparent, it also initiate discussion among students.

The course direction was loose (unstructured), and therefore the intent was not too clear. Required time was more than that of a typical 3 credit elective. (Perhaps more suitable for an 4 credit elective?) 1 hr instructions and 3 hour lab? or 2 hours each

Regarding the CNC routing, the class needs systematic programs to train students by providing detail tutorials with workshop programs instead of just quick showing an example individually. There were too many students who use laser cutter during the class hour in the shop at the end of the semester. It disturbs using laser cutter and CNC router during the class hour and makes time consuming.
I think more teaching experience will make the instructor more understandable to the students. By Which I mean the knowledge will be transferred better with improved teaching methods. At times the communication wasn't clear, I would have liked a better organised structure for the course or more choices to approach wood as a material, process of design and fabrication.

It was very impressive class.
Intensive, achievable with assistance from the fabrication workshop.

Provide lectures how to utilize laser cutting machine and CNC rougher efficiently by providing tutorials instead of just providing plenty of shop hours. Without such efficient lectures, students struggle to learn the technology by hovering a lot of time in the shop.
Although I heartily enjoyed, I am unsure of the appropriateness of the choice of fabrication of musical instruments as a part of architectural course work. Perhaps there are other architectural applications or modeling that could be used in its place? Or perhaps leave the option for students to choose the modeling/ fabrication object?

I think all programs were valuable to learn. They each have a specific usage for the field. I really learned how to use rhino, that is the program I know best because so much time was spent on it.

The Rhino program seemed the most useful and easiest to use. I really like this program. Photoshop and Indesign are also very useful, but I was already familiar with those programs.

Because we went over these programs that are not used in the architecture field as much as programs such as CADD and Revit we did not have enough time to cover CADD and Revit and I think this will hurt us a great deal in the future.

He was able to teach us a number of programs such as Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Grasshopper, Autocad, 3DS Max, Sketchup and how to use these programs to create 3D models using the CNC machine, Lasercutter, and 3d Printer. He gave tutorials to be familiar with the tools of the different programs.

Lance struggled at times when trying to help everyone in the class. Of course it wasn't completely fair for Lance because there were no TA's. Lance did a great job under the circumstances given.

The least valuable aspect of Lance Walters was his communication.
He only seems to talk to the front of the room and it is hard to see him since he sits down at his desk.

How he dealt with grading and assignments. Unorganized.
He is hard to get a hold of, when not in class. The assignments are not very clear and I don't know exactly how we are graded or what the criteria is.

Grading system was not clear. Things like how many points an assignment is worth or grading scales were never discussed. The course work was never returned with a grade so it was hard to know what to improve on. For some assignments there was a little confusion due to only announcing it verbally, rather than posting on Laulima(which was the norm).
He never or rarely replied back to student emails. We would ask questions that would never get answered until the next day we have class so that we are able to ask him in person. Not good for when we have questions about an assignment over the weekend.
The thing that I least valued was the fact that we needed to download programs constantly and when we had a problem we were basically screwed for class.
What i felt wasn't helpful was that sometimes he teaches way too fast so we cannot keep up with the steps that was done. Because not all of us have worked with the previous programs.

Jumping back and forth with programs

He was not very prepared for class and he wasted a great deal of the class time because he did not seem to have a plan when he came in. He jumped back and forth between programs and did not stick to the plan that he had originally laid out, being that he was going to teach Rhino, Grasshopper, CADD, and then touch on some Revit. We spent a great deal of time doing a "Sails" project which in the end he did not consider any of our designs for the final Sails that went up in the courtyard. He would not always put up the assignment but hold us responsible for it when it came for it to be due. Some assignments he would not post onto Laulima until 8-7 hours before it was due. He did not have a set grading system it seemed and he would allow some students to turn in late work while other were not allowed and he told should drop the class. He did not keep us up to date with our grades and when asked he would ignore the questions about grades. If we were doing bad in the class we would not know so certain students did the same level work over and over and did not find out till it was too late that they had an F in the class and that they would not be able to recover from it. He is very hard to contact because he is rarely in his office and does not respond to emails. Lance seemed very unprepared and did not know how to teach a class.
He had no TA to help him teach.
28. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
It would help to be more willing to communicate. Classmates and I would email Lance Walters questions about assignments or about why we cannot make it to class because of family/personal matters. Rarely to never Lance would reply to the email. When approached about the matter during class he would say he saw the email, then discuss the matter then. Grading assignments and posting grading on more timing matter. We received one grade check half way through the semester. It would have been nice to know what I was getting in the class during the semester to know the grade of my work produced. He would not have to go through figuring out the overall grade, but at least assignments turned in.
There should be a podium and stool instead of a low lying desk so that he is easy to see the teacher and will cause him to speak louder. He mentioned in the beginning of the semester that the class wouldn't have any TAs. Having TAs in the class would really help considering the size of the class and he can only get to so many students at a time. Speak to the class not to the computer screen. The classroom is divided by a make shift wall because there is another class that uses that space. People in the back of our class have constantly been scolded for being loud when in fact it is the other class that we share the room with making the noise. Update Laulima with grades more often so that students can see their current grades not just their grades mid semester. If you start to post assignments on Laulima please be consistent and not give out some assignments verbally because after a while we expect assignments to be online so consistency is also crucial. Please answer emails in a timely manner, some people may send last minute emails but it isn't fair to those who do it in a timely manner. Please talk to the whole class not just the front row.

-I think either the room needs to be reorganized or he needs a microphone. It is hard to hear in the middle back and even though he may think we are not listening, it really is just hard to follow what he is saying. -I think he should clarify his assignment requirements and give back feedback individually for improvement. It might be a good idea to get some T.A.s who can help give that feedback. -Even though we follow in class, when we go home a lot of times we forget the specific details to some of the steps, I think it would be good to create PDFs of the steps. He did so for one of the project and it helped a great deal.
Effective communication makes the class that much more interesting. Lack of organization leaves people skeptical of your teaching methods. Though your skills in Architecture related computer programs is impressive. You lack the necessary skills to teach students well. Students in this class were left wondering how and what the criteria of the assignments were. You have great potential in becoming a better teacher. There is no doubt that you have the necessary skills to teach Arch 235. Other students and I would appreciate a teacher that is a little more on it. We can get through lessons quicker and more effectively this way. And also have learned programs like Revit and AutoCad
I feel like he did the best he could with helping everyone in the class to gain an understanding of the programs and to give individual attention to each student, but I feel like it would benefit Lance and all of us students if he were to have a couple of TAs. He can't help everyone at once or everyone in one class period and he needs all of us to be on the same page everyday. Also, I was disappointed to find out that we never went over the two most important programs in the professional field of Architecture as of right now: AutoCAD and Revit. We talked about learning Revit and he gave us an extra credit opportunity to attend a Revit lecture. However we never learned those programs in class and I feel that those two programs are the ones we will need to know for school projects and for the professional field once we graduate. 3ds Max is useless compared to those two programs in the professional field. Lastly, it was never clear to me what the grading system was like. I understand the whole grading based on effort and not being compared other student's level of understanding. But I wanted to know the overall grading standards for each assignment.
I came to notice that Lance had his favorites in class and helped them with everything they asked and responded to every thing they said. When it came to the other students (I was in this group) he would ignore our problems sometimes and would just continue going if we had a problem dragging us behind. I think that Lance should be a little more fair and should help everyone. Also he could go a little slower on tutorials because it can be a bit confusing.

Provide a schedule of what will be taught in class each day or week so that we know what programs to have ready before class. There were numerous times where he just told us to download in class but with the slow internet connection it would take long to download thus wasting class time. I think he should provide us a hardcopy or electronic copy of tutorials of what was taught in class.
Make a clear grading system and give grades for each assignment instead of just one grade throughout the whole semester
Get a couple TA's if possible with a class bigger than maybe 10 students.
Maybe speak louder so that everyone in the room can hear, because sometimes it could get quite noisy with the amount of students we had in the class and also, sometimes, the students in the other studio in the back of the room could get a little noisy.
Manage class time better, there was a lot of sitting around. And walking around helping each student one by one is very time consuming and not very beneficial

Lance Walters is knowledgeable in the course material being taught, but he still needs work on his teaching skills. Since this is more of a visual class, dealing with 3D computer programs such as Rhino and 3DS Max, more examples would be helpful so that students can have an idea of what he wants instead reading the assignment paper, which can be confusing. Tutorials, like the ones done for the final project, would be helpful if put on Laulima that way students have something to reference to and can review what had been taught in class that day.

I think the goal and intentions for the course was a good idea, it just needs some tweaking as to how to follow through with those ideas. It was a great course if only our teacher put more thought into class because a lot of the time his due dates for projects were terribly unrealistic and because so many students had to use the same modeling machines, the availability of the machines were tight, which led to groups not being able to get their projects finished on time. If our teacher had a little more experience teaching, this course would have been great.
It was a very interesting course, and I would have loved to learn more, but the presentation of the class material and assignments didn't encourage that. Sitting in class was not stimulating or exciting.

I was very disappointed in this course because we were not taught programs that will help us in the architecture field. It was difficult to finish group projects in short amounts of time. A list of software should be presented before the course begins so we can avoid wasted time downloading software during class.

And finally maybe learning a few other programs because we did not learn AutoCad and Revit which I feel should be one of the most important programs and we did not get to learn it.

Have a TA or make the class size smaller. Its hard to learn programs when there are so many people and a tiny projector and a soft spoken teacher.
Class needs to be more engaging, and the criteria needs to be concrete and more organized. It was hard to know what was due or what we were going to be covering in class. Sometimes, in the middle of class, it was hard to know what we were doing. There was a lot of downtime and filling up that time will make class more valuable and useful.

There needs to be acess to help at anytime to either lance or a ta who knows the subject matter well.
This course could be improved with a set lesson plan. Lance should make sure that he lets everybody know their grades so they are able to keep up with what they need to improve on.

He knows a lot about different computer programs and shows how we can use them to our advantage when creating architecture.
He has experience in architecture and he shares some of the things he does out in the field. Also he has full knowledge of the programs and technologies that we are going to use in studio and possibly in our architectural career.
His knowledge on Rhino, and how he was easily available for outside studio help.
Offers advice and respects each individual's goals and visions for their projects. Tries to explain ways in which we can develop our ideas further and push us towards conclusions in our design.
Lance is very knowledgeable in the field of Architecture.
27. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
He doesn't attend to everyone. He stays with a student for a significant amount of time and sometimes skip some students to check up another student he talked to earlier.
Not having him in class when I have questions about my design.

exposure to new teaching methods and different tools for architecture made the class challenging but interesting at the same time.
The course was enjoyable. The projects and the direction we went at was great and I feel I learned a lot during this class.
Great. If I could take Lance again in another studio I would.
quite good, perhaps one of the more enjoyable studios I have had where I feel that the professor generally does maintain interest in the progress and ideas of projects. During one on one time, did offer usable advice to which aided in furthering the development of my design and understanding. I appreciate the ability to explore ideas and the given encouragement to try and execute them, despite the hesitations and limitations I feel.

He should limit his time between students. I feel that he is not able to check on everyone's work because he stays with one student for a very long time.
