Biodiversity loss isn't going anywhere and we need to be aware of it.
This is the second prof in my educational career where I felt a social barrier to being able to take full advantage of the lessons that a class of this nature had to offer. Deep down, I would have liked to take another course with this professor due to his depth of knowledge, but a perception personal negative dynamic suggest that this is unwise.

Camilo's unique teaching style - his engagement of the students in the class. His humor, approachability, and interesting projects. The information he gave us was intense, sad, frustrating, and scary - but he was honest. He didn't go for the lecture-test format that so many teachers rely on, instead he trusted us and respected us to talk about the material and actually LEARN about it. I appreciate that, it made for a very interesting class. I am going to remember feeling like the world is totally screwed up, but how there is a little hope in teaching people about it - getting the real information across. He teaches us to question where our information comes from. He gets us thinking about why people aren't making the changes that need to happen to help the world. He is very passionate about this subject.

all of the subject matter that I learned, and how it pertains to so many things that I do in life and that how we as humans affect so many things, and in turn are affected ourselves. The lectures were excellent and so were the way they were presented.

He knows what he's talking about and it's really useful having such a successful professor with so many valid and current publications in outside journals.
Prof. Mora is a very enthusiastic person about is field. I think that it is enlightening to receive be in a situation to receive some of his knowledge. I think that he has a new way at trying to get information across to students. I consider it a privilege to have been one of his students. However, I sometimes wonder if he allows his personal social perceptions (may be subconsciously) to interfere with his ability to be impartiality and objectivity when dealing with all students on an impartial level.
A world-class instructor who engages his class in a non-traditional style.
I appreciate the way that the class was designed, with plenty of examples from relevant literature. As a professor, I think he is engaging, enthusiastic, and available-despite his busy schedule.

He was very lively, animated and fun. I liked this class a lot. I am aware I didn't participate as much as I probably should of but that's due to the fact that I was probably the only non- geography/environmental person in the class. But I think I showed Camilo I tried during the final and I always attended class and listened as much as I could to gain the information so I could learn.

I will remember the course as being one of the most interesting courses that I have taken, and one that I really learned a lot, and I will remember the things that I have learned. He is a great professor and is really passionate about the subject matter, and it he really shows it during his presentations. He was very easy to talk to and really opens up to his students. We need more professors like him at this University. He does great research, and focuses on teaching everything that he knows to his students. Some professors do research, but are terrible teachers. Camilo knows that education is the tool to get his research into the minds of others and that teaching is his way of affected others and getting his message across. Excellent professor.

The presentations were excellent and detailed. I especially thought the course assignments were an excellent way to push important topics forward.
I gained a lot of knowledge that makes me want to combat or change the path of consumption to better the world.
More courses in this format need to be offered at UH. This offers such a unique opportunity to learn without the burden or fear of giant standardized tests of the material. It allows our brains to be freed up to actually try to understand the concepts, instead of certain points that "will be on the test".

How well I've applied what I've learned through the decisions I make in my own life.
the fact that i liked it.
The teacher! He was so easy to talk, so knowledgeable, and laid out the information so it was easy to understand. He made a difference in my academic career as well as my personal life.
Camilo's passion. His anger at how crappy we are treating the environment. His comments. The intensive amounts of information given to us. The frustration about how much is wrong with the world and how it feels that there is so little we can do to help it - yet Camilo has HOPE! He is funny, approachable, passionate, intelligent, and a very unique teacher. His style and his methods are unorthodox but we need more teachers like him.

the importance of biodiversity. human impacts on biodiversity loss and possible solutions for attempting to save our planet.
We're all screwed! The implications of our actions have negative consequences on the environment on countless levels and there isn't just one solution to our environmental ecological problems but many layers that need to be considered to solve them. So again, we're just all screwed.
The great debates that occurred in the class, the different setup and syllabus the class followed, various subjects about biodiversity, the hilarious videos we created, and the fact that it seems like humanity is screwed unless action is done.
Hard to say! The environment is always changing! overpopulation -> overexploitation -> extinction of species I have become more aware of my environmental impact as a result of this class. I completely avoid plastic waste whenever I can - it is so evil. Things I can control, I do.
Biodiversity is declining because of us and if we don't find a solution now then WE ARE SCREWED.
is that we are screwed because we of the loss of biodiversity and problems that cause the loss of biodiversity and ways that can be solutions but we never found one yet.
The information I learned from Camilo Mora
The passion of Camilo. The lessons of the class and the changes we will see happen from the research that he does.

Prof. Mora's knowledge, sense of humor, and passion. Also, instead of making us remember facts we would forget after an exam, he would throw tons of facts to make an actual over arching point that would resonate long term. In light of all of this, he also can be kind of intimidating.
The way that information was passed to us by Dr. Mora. He illustrated the effects and consequences of global biodiversity loss.

He encourages his students to learn the material and not memorize them. To have good understanding of the issues rather than remembering dates and terms in order for them to be readily available in your head at all times. He has a good teaching method that makes the course interesting.

Though I was scared to come to class some days, whether it be because I was nervous I'd get ripped apart on a presentation or picked to summarize last week's class it was overall good for me. I believe that the commercials can be expanded on by integrating other departments of UH such as the media/photography department and the theatre department to create professional real videos that could have a bigger impact.

The incredible group of students and the opportunity offered by Dr. Mora to participate in this interdisciplinary working group. I would call this course an experience rather than just a class. Here are the main reasons why: 1) Active learning of subject material and relevant techniques through hands on experience; 2) High expectations met with hard work following from his example; 3) The sense of accomplishment from completing a lofty goal; 4) Great student rapport, new collaborations formed, stimulating and respectful dialogue all semester; 5) Dr. Mora served as an additional adviser in a sense, teaching us how to conduct high-level research and to publish, especially important for students with hands-off or absentee advisers.
The first manuscript I've prepared for submission. And, some of Camilo's funny stories!
Learning how to research, collect data online, make maps, code in R, and ultimately, learning how to prepare a manuscript from A to Z for publication.

Methodological approaches for using and analyzing broad-scale data sets, process of manuscript writing, and collaborative interdisciplinary efforts.
The ambition of Camilo to push students to work hard and believe that by the end of the semester that they could send their work to Nature for consideration. Also, how Camilo puts everyone on the same level, and values all opinions from everyone, regardless of their status.

This is the first time Ive worked on a publication and Im so appreciative of the incredible opportunity we had to work on a paper together as a class. Learned so much about the whole process. Brainstorming interesting questions to answer, collecting data, assuring that the data was high quality, analysis, making figures, writing, and editing.

that he is an inspired teacher whose ambition and drive rub off on students. He demonstrated a level of commitment to this course that far exceeded anything I've come across before. He is relatable, yet intriguing and inspiring, all at once.
Camilo is incredibly dedicated to his work and his enthusiasm is contagious. He's very approachable and I felt very comfortable asking him for assistance or clarification both inside and outside of class. He's also a very funny guy and his sharing of stories and life experiences definitely lightens the mood in class and creates a comfortable learning environment.
A very brilliant and determined individual with a very strong work ethic. He kept high expectations from us, but took the time every class to make sure we all understood how to do the work.

Camilo did a great job leading us to complete what we agree to do in the course. His analytical techniques and knowledge appeared very helpful and useful to incorporate in my own dissertation research. He kept a good attitude going through all steps and crunch time. He deserves an A!
Camilo is a leader willing to challenge the status quo. In this case he challenged the rigid structure of a standard graduate course. He believed that it was possible to get a paper from the contribution of everyone in a class. He was not willing to accept that the students are here just to memorize facts, only to regurgitate it later for a final exam and then never think about the content again. At the end of the semester, our class sent out a paper for publication, proving that when given the chance, bold ideas and faith in the students will prosper. This could potentially be huge for other universities, especially if we get our paper published in Nature.
Camilo is a very enthusiastic and dedicated instructor, and expects the same level of dedication from his students. I am glad to have taken this class
He is extremely enthusiastic, approachable, and knowledgeable which made the class valuable and fun. Sometimes his explanations were hard to follow at first, but he is very responsive to feedback and is able to explain concepts in multiple ways so that we can understand. He is one of the most hard- working professors I have met and it was inspiring to work with someone so dedicated to his field.

Far and away one of the best experiences I've had as a graduate student. Really got to know the other students in this class, and there was a recognition early on that we were all embarking on something truly unique at UH. That mutual acknowledgement and support resulted in deep respect for one another and unthinkable productivity. Though this course should serve as a model for other graduate courses, the level of motivation and resulting satisfaction would be hard to replicate.
This class took up a tremendous amount of my time, though Camilo warned it would from the start. I understand that it was an experiment and while it was a great experience, I think there were things that can be improved for the next time the class is taught. We crammed a huge amount into one semester- it should probably be broken into two semesters, that way more time can be used for teaching the skills and programs that will be used. While we touched upon coding in R and Visual Basic and used ARC GIS, I would have definitely liked to spend more time learning and doing practice exercises in these programs. Because students were at different levels as far as their skill sets, the work was distributed unevenly. I felt as though I wasn't able to contribute as much because of this, and this made me feel uneasy and a bit guilty, though I know it had to be done this way in the interest of time. Overall, it was a great experience. Great professor and a wonderful group of students (Camilo kind of got lucky in this regard!).
For the amount of coursework involved in this class, in order to prepare a paper for publishing in one semester, the department should definitely consider making this a 6 credit course. We spent 6-9 hours in class every week, spent a considerable amount of time working outside of class, and met as a class nearly 25 hrs over the last week and weekend to finish editing the paper before sending it out for publication. It was his first a course like this was being offered, so we obviously worked through a few rough patches as a class to get the paper complete; this course could easily be spread over 2 semesters.
I think this class would benefit from more organized class sessions in the beginning of the semester. Literature review on the material with some discussion and lab exercises that demonstrate the basics of programming. The class was good but I know it will only get better. Thanks for a great Class!
Intense but very rewarding course in the end especially if we could publish our work. I would have like to learn more details in analytical methods and steps that I did not have a chance to do much hands-on practices since we had so much going on. However this is understandable as we needed to divide tasks to meet our greater goal to complete the project. Hope to learn more about these in the future.
Camilo is a bold man, a true leader and a brilliant scientist. I thank him for this opportunity and experience.
this was a highly informative but demanding class, the benefits from taking it far outweigh the time and effort commitments needed to complete the class
I learned a lot in this course, not only in terms of methods but also about the paper writing & submission process. I gained many important skills in this course and I'm very glad I took it (plus it was a lot of fun!). This course should have been worth 6 credits for the amount of time we put in (well over 6 hours of class time each week, plus outside time). The end of the course felt rushed in many ways, and I wish we had had more class time to go over some of the methods used to do the biodiversity and GDP analyses and produce the figures. Overall, this was a great experience.
I wish we had more time to go in depth with R. Although we had some exposure we didnt really have time to lay down strong foundations in R basics.

I can remember this course because Mora is very passionate in getting the material across about biodiversity and geography. He makes sure the class participates by asking people about the last class and about the present lecture. overall i enjoyed the class, and will remember the information given. I will remember biodiversity of plants and animals based on abundance, body size, and learned about evolutionary processes.
The class I had to do the fieldwork project on snails and the most challenging course I took the first semester back after a three year break from school.

Passionate with an engaging approach to teaching. He understands that education specifically the way students are exposed to information needs to adapt to our modern time to increase academic literacy.
Good if not better. I had a difficult time at first with the teaching style, but I think the way I've grasped the patterns and process concepts just came together in the Final. Maybe I'd prefer to have more mastery of it all, but a good grasp feels inwardly good. I was very skeptical, but I think your section of the course will probably retain itself in my brain longer.

Excellent! This professor structures the whole class around participation. He has a knack for getting students engaged and thinking critically. This man needs an award! He assigned a group project and he went and helped with collecting field data with every group over the period of the whole course. I have never seen that level of involvement before. He sacrificed a lot of his own time for that, I really appreciate the enthusiasm.
Great teacher. Extremely passionate about biogeography & very fair in grading. A bit intimidating, but friendly, straightforward, & has a good sense of humor.
Outstanding. Camilo is a true subject matter expert in his field, and it shows in each of his classes. Instead of reading bullets word for word off of a Powerpoint presentation, Camilo uses the slides to reinforce the material he is verbally presenting. Camilo is very professional and I thoroughly enjoyed his method of teaching.

Sometimes I had difficulty following the presentation, but now I think it has to do with the fact that there was so much material being covered in one lecture per week.
Two completely different instructors with different teaching styles, expectations, etc was a little difficult for it was not consistent across both halves

Must recommend this for future grad students, not only Geography, but any science or social science department on campus. The time of day of the course was at first frustrating to be on a Friday, late afternoon, but quickly turend ot to be the most favorite part of my week. I will miss the discussions and colleagues met through this course.
We did our best considering the time frame. I think this would have been a different class if it were held on a Tuesday at the same time. I think in the beginning of the semester students should have picked a week to present and prepared a presentation including background material. This would have added some organization. All in in all it was a good class and I learned quite a bit. Good Job! Thanks for making grad school productive and fun at the same time.

4. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
I will remember the course because of Camilo's interesting sense of humor. I will also remember what we talked about the last week: that biodiversity is unique, that we are losing it, possibly forever, and that nothing we are doing to help seems to work.

The amount of effort Mora put into each lecture. From the first day, all the way through, he showed us his passion for the environment and global biodiversity. He truly cared about what we students would be taking from the class. For me, I know this class will have lasting effects. I honetly wish I had more professors like Camilo Mora.
- that this course serves as great example that it more important to learn about general ideas and concept of a course and be able to explain them in the long term instead of cramping all the information you had covered through out the semester for the final exam and than just remember a fraction of that information following the exam. We live in the information age society, where its easy to look up the information you need any time. Exams should be something from yesterday. Developing critical thinking skills and learning on how to write good papers and do creative projects is far more important. - contents, ideas and concepts of the course should be cloned and be taught to people all over the world. Perhaps this would bring the breakthrough to get the much needed change and stop man-kind from turning the earth into planet hell!

I learned four main concepts: 1) Biodiversity and its Value 2) biodiversity trends 3) Causes of biodiversity 4) Solutions to biodiversity loss. In 2012, you mentioned "we are fucked!" By 2022, I hope we are not saying this same thing.

He was a great teacher who clearly loves inspiring his students and getting to think. The class was more about pariticipation and group discussion than anything else which bonded us together and really got us thinking about problems and solutions. I gained more from this class than many others that follow the regular outdated teaching format of lecture, notes, papers, then exams. The environment was welcoming and stress free and Camilo's clear passion made us all WANT to come to class just to be a part of the discussion. Some people were just made to teach and Camilo is one of them.

Being a new teacher at the University, Camilo was well prepared weekly with class discussions and he kept the class engaged with work students of all majors especially environmental majors.

I love the structure of his class. It maintains a very relaxed and slightly less formal atmosphere which is so much different than any other course I have ever taken. I would strongly recommend Camilo's classes to any of my friends, whether they are geography majors or not.

Number 14, "Camilo Mora maintains an atmosphere of good feeling in class" should not be applied to this course. The lessons Camilo must teach are heavy in content, as we are learning about the loss of biodiversity and how it applies to our own well being. Feeling good after hearing about the end to life is no good. It would indicate that we've missed the point of the lecture.
