13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
Piko Project/presentation, learning how to make an Ohe Kapala and Kihei, and visual lecture presentation ( for each presented topic, ppt) and video clips.
Made me understand and appreciate the Hawaiian culture
Kumu Lincoln has a passion and extensive knowledge of the subject she teaches. I enjoyed the many hands on projects, educational excursions and her deep knowledge of the mo'olelo she shares. She has a talent for engaging the entire class in her daily ha'awina.
I loved the inquiries and how everything that should be listed on them was in the powerpoints, also that they were available on laullima should we need access.
The activities we need did like going to Maluaka and Kahaluu was really fun and was cool to see places with a lot of history being restored. Carving the Ohe was cool and being able to print on a Kihei was pretty neat to see how Hawaiians did it.
14. Any suggestions to improve this course?
N/A
we should make this course a requirement for all students. i strongly believe it is important for students to understand the host culture and its people. understanding this island and the history of its people will help better prepare students when we are in the professional field.
It was great and I would definitely recommend this course with this instructor!

18. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?
Opportunity to develop a deeper connection with my ancestry and the realization of how sacred the Big Island moku are in their individual ways.
I feel I gained a deeper knowledge into my cultural background that I can share with my ohana.I increased my knowledge of my island home by learning about rain, wind, mauna, pu'u, olelo, mo'olelo, moku, wahi pana, hono, lae and literal translations, each specific to it's own moku.
I learned a lot about myself and further deepened my connection with my Hawaiian culture. I learned about a deeper meaning behind piko and why it is that my parents have kept mine safe all these years and in general I learned to cherish and value everything around me always.
Learn from the past. Have respect for the land and care for it. Don't take anything for granted because it can all be lost someday.

18. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?
I have a better understanding of each District on my island. I learned the names of the Pu`u that surrounds me everyday. I would like to learn about the legends of these Pu`u. I designed my first `ohe kapla and printed my first kihe. I was very nervous about doing it right but learned to just trust in myself to let it happen. I am struggling with learning my culture and would like to embrace and find my way to feel comfortable within my heritage. I felt this class was the beginning of that journey. I am very excited to take the next class. Mahalo Healani Spencer

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
This course was very interesting to me. Kumu did a great job at teaching and putting together power points and homework. She was always there for help when we needed it. She responded to her email in a timely manor even when it was not a school day.
Our last project that we did on our genealogy was a very pleasant one for me. It allowed me to see who I am and the sacrifices that my ancestors made so that i could have a better life than them and it motivated me to do better overall in school and in life to take advantage of the opportunity that i have been given.
I liked the interactive activities we did its a class i will recommend it too fellow students.
I really enjoyed the hands-on activities and other field trips that we took. The mo'oku'auhau project turned out to be really cool and I learned a lot.

18. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?
It really makes you appreciate what is given to us. What the land does for us and how we use and abuse it and we do not give back as much as we should. It makes me want to give back more than i have already given.
I have learned that I can be great in all things if I want to and that i can overcome the trials and hard suffering that come in my life because those before me have done it and with less than what I have available today. Success is for my taking if i want it.
That the land is the important thing and not the mortal man.
I really have developed a greater sense of personal responsibility through the people I met on our field trips and through certain assignments.
a deeper understanding

13. What did you like about this course, such as activities, projects, assignments, etc.?
I really enjoyed this class. I got to meet new people and care takers of some places along the west side of kona. I am so amazed I learned to make rope. it was a lot of work but it was a great experience. I hope one day that I can go on a voyage just like my teacher has.
Getting to meet people of the different wahi pana we visited and listen to their stories and share their manaʻo.
I enjoyed going to the sites around the island and learning about the Hawaiian Culture. My Instructor was very supportive, and was always there when needed, She went out of her way to help any student that had challenges in her class, she has helped me with my swimming. Our assignments was projects that I surely will never forget. Great class great teacher.
Pua took us to so many places that we would never have gone to in our life without her. Harvesting hau and preparing and making cordage stands out as the major activity. Ko'a Holo moana heiau was my favorite place for I had a spiritual experience there.
overall loved this class
The bi-monthly format of this class allowed for tremendous depth. The opportunity to be immersed in experiential learning on site for a 6 hour block of time along with the residents and mo`olelo of the areas created such strong and impacting encounters. The instructor's personal knowledge, along with connections to personal resources (people/places) helped to create ample opportunity for student growth. Each activity, site visit, and personal encounter allowed me to grow both academically and spiritually. I enjoyed the hands on work of processing the hau from plant to fiber to finished cordage. Being required to complete 10 anana made the effort so rewarding. It wasn't just a "sampling" of the skill, but it wasn't overwhelming either. The kihei project to conclude the semester was extremely enjoyable. Although I had done lau kapala before, I had never done it using negative space as the instructor taught us. The effect was stunning and I felt such accomplishment by being able to do it with my family and classmates. Usually, kihei stamping is done alone but working alongside others helped inspire ideas and appreciate differences in design.

18. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?
I learned that if you work hard, then you get to eat! But i also learned that we need to take care of our home more and be the care takers of our place now.
To be more self sufficient and not rely on imported things. Anything is possible with the ʻike that the kupuna taught us. Strength in is the ʻike, just gotta apply it.
Because we live on an Island we should sustain fishing. I love to fish, but now I am more educated on how the Hawaiians lived and sustained their fishing.
Different fishing techniques were used in the past depending on the environment. Also I will think very hard before I go Holo holo anywhere. However I am in a quandary because I don"t want to take fish from someone else's area but since I live in volcano does sthis mean I don"t go fishing?
There is so much I learned. I don't think I'll be able to cover it all. The instructor demonstrated such skill at presenting content from multiple perspectives. She integrated aspects of culture, myth, practical application and spirit with each lesson. She excelled at making lessons relevant to us as individuals and as a group. When I can apply things learned to my life, then it makes my formal education so much more interesting and rewarding. One of the most impacting lessons I had was more of a personal one. I had been struggling to come to terms with how decisive I normally am. I had worried that I was too arrogant or rude when dealing with others who put me or others in troubling situations. My concerns were put to rest when I observed how decisive the instructor was. When students acted disrespectfully -especially to community members who hosted us - she immediately addressed it and did so to the entire class (confidentially) to ensure EVERYONE (no matter who created the initial concern) knew how to act and that such behavior would not be tolerated. Perhaps this is due to her upbringing, but I suspect it is because as a long distance ocean voyager, she knows what is truly important. But she was never unkind or disrespectful to students. She definitely taught by example and is a wonderful teacher and human being.

Mahalo a nui loa for such a great class. I liked the critical thinking aspect, because I am not one to think so spiritually and have a difficult time with kaona. Doing makawalu as a papa helps me out a lot. I hope to do the same for the rest of the semesters to come!
Great teacher..
Wow! Pua is a GREAT teacher. As a retired teacher I have only said this about two teachers. Pua is so well organized and when students try to take advantage she firmly but tactfully puts her foot down. The amount of work and learning that took place this semester is better than most 600 courses. That is why my family and I drive for two and a half hours one way to attend her class and have signed up for nest semester. The school has a GEM in Pua.
epic class, loved it
Pualani Lincoln-Maielua is a true gift to the Hawaiian Lifestyles program. Her teaching style and personality is so appropriate for this type of learning. Students are actively engaged in their educations. Bodies, minds, and spirits. There were so many "aha!" moments, I lost count. She brought new levels of awareness and growth to my life. Being a full-time student at UH Hilo majoring in philosophy, this class was my "saving grace." Although I was extremely busy with writing papers, readings and projects, I was overjoyed to engage in the coursework. In fact, on occasion, I would NEED to work on my hau or other lawai`a work to engage my spirit so that my mind and body could continue to do other work. This class has been extremely impacting and has brought me so much spiritual joy and comfort. In fact, after a semester engaged in the agonizing "western" thinking of my philosophy classes, I've decided to change my major to Hawaiian studies. Hawaiian culture is so fulfilling on so many levels and is so relevant to my personal life. Pualani is the type of teacher I wish I had as a teen. She is nurturing and understanding but firm and direct. She gives students clear boundaries and they never have to question what the rules are. She recognizes that students have family obligations but she also doesn't allow them the option to fail. She helps lift students up without enabling them. I wish all students could learn from an educator like Pualani. She helps inspire passion for learning and THAT is a rare gift. Not all educators can do that.
