13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?

Professor Stephen is an excellent well versed professor. He is accessible, friendly, understanding, patient, kind, shows a genuine interest in the students and their needs, concerns and addresses them asap. His one of the better professors, that unfortunately the UH system and students will miss. (seriously if the UH wants to keep great professors they need to get paid fair wage and compensated more with better benefits !)His very down to earth and humble a very nice young man. VERY patient, knows subject very well, very good examples/exercies/assignments

easy to work with, quick to answer, when talked to he was easy to get along with and relate to.

Communication was great, and organized.

Professor Acabado knows the subject material very well, and he presented the material in a way that held our interest (interesting articles, websites). He also encouraged our own exploration of anthropology by having us do exercises that required us to observe and examine ourselves as well as our community. Professor Acabado was very easy to communicate with and was very fair to all his students.

Very knowledgable and presents anthropology in an interesting way. The lessons taught in the class are very practical and the articles are very informative.

He actively participates with class discussions by providing clear answers to questions. He makes learning fun with various media resources online.

Nothing, but to have the time of his life in Guam and make the best of this blessed life changing experience!

Maybe make it a little clearer on what chapters are covered on quiz's.

15. How did the instructor show concern for students?

He response to emails asap, makes great and encouraging comments/suggestion when it comes to grading assignments, very tactful, gives one good information and makes one think and want to learn more by asking questions or seeking more information from outside sources besides what he provides.

On-line chat every saturday to discuss concerns and topics.

He held weekly Saturday chats where we could ask him questions about the course or just talk story about the goings on in each others lives. He always asked us if we had any questions or concerns and was always willing to clarify things.

The weekly weekend discussions in the chat were very open for us to discuss what we wanted to about the course and other ideas

He logged online to chat with students and responded very quickly to any questions or comments.

He answered everyone's questions and if there was an individual concern he addressed it professionally.

He was sympathetic to our everyday lives & schedules & did not expect more than able from us.

Super cool and understanding.

16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

Of course I would recommend Professor Stephen, if one is serious and wants to learn from a professor that pocesses the teaching qualities then by all means take his class. I am just disappointed that he is leaving and my grandgirl will not be able to appreciate and benefit from his aweome methods of instruction, unless she follows him to his new destination.

He is very open minded and he doesn't go too deep into the subject matter that we get lost in the material, and he encourages us to get involved enough so that we don't lose interest and so that we do actually learn and get a lot out of it.

Thank you Professor Stephen, this may be a little out of charecter for me but what the heck "YOUR'E THE BOMB" ! ha ha ha Mahalo, good luck and hopefully one day I will meet the man that I found great value in his words, anthropology is of tolerance and accepting.

Mr. Acabado knew his field well and taught it well.

Knew a lot about his studies.

He really cares about the well being of the students and tries his best to impart knowledge on them. Even though i had hard time showing up for his class he really did care about how well i was doing and did his best to help me succeed i have much respect for him for doing that.

He knew his information on anthropology strongly, and he was a very good speaker, although he also speaks Filipino.

Professor Acabado major strength as a teacher is his lectures. His lectures, along with his powerpoints, really help me to understand what the chapters was about.

Mr. Acabado knew his subject very and was able to get the course information across to the students clearly. He also made class interesting with different stories about when he grew and ect.

Stephan Acabado knows his material well but should try find another way of teaching it to students, and make it a little more intersting. overall, the course did interest me, but he did little to get me motivated.

Maybe one change I would suggest is to possibly plan more activities for the day so that we don't have to be stuck only watching slide shows.

Mm...maybe go over the group projects just a little bit more to make sure everyone understands what exactly is expected...

when doing projects, inform the students what needs to be done at least a month before it is due, instead of a week.

i think trying to stick to the syllabus he gave us at the beginning of the year would be great and also remembering what was put on the syllabus would help the class run a lot smoother.

He took in consideration the situation the the student was in and was very understanding.

Like i said, he showed the curriculum to everyone, madeit available both online and in paper. He also showed up to date grades and offered extra credit to those who really needed it.

If we had questions or concerns he had the answers to help us fix our problems or give us more information on how to answer our questions.

yes i would recommend him. i really like that he gives the students a chance to change their grade by giving extra credit and making up late assignments. i know it's a lot more work for him, but myself and i'm sure all the other students really appreciate the opportunity to better their grade and the work that he puts in to grade the assignments.

Yes. He makes it so that you do not have to spend an excessive amount of time studying for his class, but you still learn everything that you need to learn.

I'd recommend this course if the student already had a decent background in the subject and could follow the ideas discussed on their own. Anyone trying to learn the subject without any prior knowledge will be in a bad position.

He knows his subject area very well. I enjoyed his online/in-class methods of teaching.

what he was teaching followed a lot of his own personal examples from his study, this made a bit easier to understand and grasp concepts. Also, did a lot of discussions.

The instructor was very good at choosing interesting and engaging materiel to for the class. While the textbook was nothing to write home about, all the supplemental reading was excellent. The in class video presentations were also quite edifying.

not so many papers

I think he should do more in-class activities sort of thing, you know get the students to come to class. for the most part everything was online. It's as though there were no point in being in class because all the notes, summaries etc. were online.

When lecturing, he digressed a lot.

The ethnography project should bet better explained, possibly devoting a class period to it. Also, the exercises should be made available further in advance of their due dates if possible.

No changes. Had a fun time in class and learned a lot.

I think the syllabus could've changed a bit because of the dates quizzes and summaries were due were all odd days when they probably should've been due the day of the class, and also the way he spoke wasn't always clear, he knew the material but couldn't speak or articulate well maybe it could've been because of his accent or what not.

I suggest that he should make the class participate more, have class discussion.

A little less writing and more in class interaction. This class was very writing intensive for a class that does not count for writing intensive. I actually wrote more papers in this class than we did for my writing intensive English class that I was taking this same semester.

There was a LOT of reading in the class. Sometimes it was a little over bearing. It would have been great if there was a little less reading material. However, on the other hand the reading material gave us ample opportunity to generate extra credit.

NONE! He was great!

The only change that I could suggest is how you acknowledge the class/ student when someone decides to actually gather enough gut inside to speak or commment about the lecture, your usual response is nothing. Sometimes it seems like you didnt hear the person state their opionion. Sometimes an encouraging, "thats a good point" or "what about this..." might ingnite more interaction with the class.

To teach more on cultural anthropology and go deeper into the subject maybe with more films (though we had some). Also, though I did enjoy the lectures sometimes too much lecturing is too much on the brain. At times I felt that it went in one ear and out the other.

My only suggestion would be is to somehow lively up your Chapter presentation. You have a great amount of knowledge for the subject but you tend to just read the PowerPoint presentation that is on the computer screen instead of elaborating on it. I hate to say this but maybe you could work on your pronunciation a bit more. It's often hard to decipher what word was said but eventually, you could put 2 and 2 together.

He didn't really, emailing was hard to get through with him, responses were always late and didn't always answer my questions thoroughly.

I'm sorry but no. I might as well have taken the course online. I didn't learn anything from him directly, but instead had to study the textbook and powerpoints myself. I received no assistance from him as far as learning aside from him providing resources. I couldn't understand him, and classroom sessions were a waste of time seeing as how I had to teach myself the material. I have no doubt that he knows what he's talking about, he just couldn't communicate that information very well.

I know people might have other comments about the way Mr. A speaks. I can honestly say his accent was initally hard to understand, but throughout the semester, it became a lot easier to understand. Overall Mr. A is a good teacher with a lot of knowledge and a lot to offer. I wish him the best of luck with his career and schooling.

i did not receive a reply to an email sent. it was not very important to me because it would only change a point or maybe half a point so wasn't worth asking again, but no response is disappointing overall, the class was ok. i learned some interesting things and am still somewhat curious about anthropology
