13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
|
| Professor Stephen is an excellent well versed professor. He is accessible, friendly, understanding, patient, kind, shows a genuine interest in the students and their needs, concerns and addresses them asap. His one of the better professors, that unfortunately the UH system and students will miss.
(seriously if the UH wants to keep great professors they need to get paid fair wage and compensated more with better benefits !)His very down to earth and humble a very nice young man. Thank you Professor Stephen !
Val Kekahuna |
| VERY patient, knows subject very well, very good examples/exercies/assignments |
| easy to work with, quick to answer, when talked to he was easy to get along with and relate to. |
| Communication was great, and organized. |
| Professor Acabado knows the subject material very well, and he presented the material in a way that held our interest (interesting articles, websites). He also encouraged our own exploration of anthropology by having us do exercises that required us to observe and examine ourselves as well as our community. Professor Acabado was very easy to communicate with and was very fair to all his students. |
| Making his students think as well as having us learn in everything he had us do |
| Very knowledgable and presents anthropology in an interesting way. The lessons taught in the class are very practical and the articles are very informative. |
| He actively participates with class discussions by providing clear answers to questions. He makes learning fun with various media resources online. |
| He knows his material. Does not expect students to be as informed as he is. |
| SUBJECT AREA!!!!!!! |
| He is very intelligent. You can tell with his responses that he's a very well-rounded professor. |
|
|
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
|
| absolutely nothing... his doing a excellent job! |
| none at this time come to mind. |
| None |
| None. |
| none |
| None I felt like his summer course was very well organized and accepting. |
| Nothing, but to have the time of his life in Guam and make the best of this blessed life changing experience! |
| Maybe make it a little clearer on what chapters are covered on quiz's. |
|
|
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
|
| He response to emails asap, makes great and encouraging comments/suggestion when it comes to grading assignments, very tactful, gives one good information and makes one think and want to learn more by asking questions or seeking more information from outside sources besides what he provides. |
| encouraged participation, replied to emails quickly |
| through his answers at the optional weekly meeting. |
| On-line chat every saturday to discuss concerns and topics. |
| He held weekly Saturday chats where we could ask him questions about the course or just talk story about the goings on in each others lives. He always asked us if we had any questions or concerns and was always willing to clarify things. |
| The weekly weekend discussions in the chat were very open for us to discuss what we wanted to about the course and other ideas |
| He logged online to chat with students and responded very quickly to any questions or comments. |
| He answered everyone's questions and if there was an individual concern he addressed it professionally. |
| He was sympathetic to our everyday lives & schedules & did not expect more than able from us. |
| Super cool and understanding. |
| He was prompt with his responses and offered extra credit. |
|
|
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
|
| Of course I would recommend Professor Stephen, if one is serious and wants to learn from a professor that pocesses the teaching qualities then by all means take his class. I am just disappointed that he is leaving and my grandgirl will not be able to appreciate and benefit from his aweome methods of instruction, unless she follows him to his new destination. |
| yes, mr. acabado is very helpful, assigns assignments that are very enjoyable. gives very good examples. always there |
| yes, because of the ease and not overbearing workload of the coarse and the teacher itself. |
| Yes, he is very knowledgebal and excited about the course. |
| Yes, because he is a great teacher who cares about his students and is passionate about anthropology. He moves the course along at a good pace. He is very open minded and he doesn't go too deep into the subject matter that we get lost in the material, and he encourages us to get involved enough so that we don't lose interest and so that we do actually learn and get a lot out of it. |
| Yes because you learn in every aspect of the course |
| Yes, I have learned a lot of useful information in his class. |
| Yes most definitely because the content of the class was made fun through his teaching style. |
| Yes he is able to relate with us and not expect too much yet challenges us to learn. |
| YES! It is a fun class and you will learn a lot. |
| Yes. As long as you do your work (and put some elbow grease into it), you will do well in this class. It's not a class for slackers or people that can manage their time. |
|
|
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
|
| Thank you Professor Stephen, this may be a little out of charecter for me but what the heck "YOUR'E THE BOMB" ! ha ha ha
Mahalo, good luck and hopefully one day I will meet the man that I found great value in his words, anthropology is of tolerance and accepting. |
| although i HATE writing papers, i really enjoyed your writing exercies/assignments. thank you for being very helpful and patient! |
| great guy |
| He is a wonderful professor that taught me so much about the course that I use twords life. |
| Professor Acabado is a great teacher! I was not really looking forward to taking Anth200, but I really enjoyed his course, and I learned a lot of great things. |
| Very good teacher. |
| I enjoyed his class and feel anyone taking his class will benefit. |
| Great Instructor |
| He's an awesome teacher! |
| To Dr. Acabado: Congrats on getting your PhD and good luck in Guam! |

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
|
| Mr. Acabado knew his field well and taught it well. |
| Knew a lot about his studies. |
| He really cares about the well being of the students and tries his best to impart knowledge on them. Even though i had hard time showing up for his class he really did care about how well i was doing and did his best to help me succeed i have much respect for him for doing that. |
| He knew his information on anthropology strongly, and he was a very good speaker, although he also speaks Filipino. |
| Know his course really well. |
| kind, excepting |
| Professor Acabado major strength as a teacher is his lectures. His lectures, along with his powerpoints, really help me to understand what the chapters was about. |
| Knowing material |
| Mr. Acabado knew his subject very and was able to get the course information across to the students clearly. He also made class interesting with different stories about when he grew and ect. |
| Stephan Acabado knows his material well but should try find another way of teaching it to students, and make it a little more intersting. overall, the course did interest me, but he did little to get me motivated. |
| tries to encourage learning. |
| He is really nice, knows the subject very well, and teaches a lot of information. |
| He is really open to the students opinions and view about the course. He is a great teacher and the why the class is run make you learn and want to learn |
| He's such a nice guy, but at the same time gets his students to really think!! |
| He was very understanding of how a student felt. |
| He knows the subject that he teaches well. |
| he knows a lot about the area he is teaching. he can explain things that maybe confusing to myself or the class. |
| He assesses his students and their learning abilities and teaches accordingly. |
| his knowledge and passion for his field of study. |
| the subject of Anthropology
& relating the material to our everyday life |
| knowledge of the subject area |
| He is very well educated in the subject matter. |
| He knows what he's talking about! I like this teacher! I'm glad my friend recommended him to me. |
| No comment. |
| Enthusiasm for subject and willingness to work with student on problem-solving. |
|
|
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
|
| I would not suggest any changes for Mr. Acabado. |
| make class a writing intensive course. |
| none |
| Maybe one change I would suggest is to possibly plan more activities for the day so that we don't have to be stuck only watching slide shows. |
| Being more specific on directions for homework, assignments, or tests. |
| explain projects more |
| Your class should be a WI because there was a lot of papers we had to do. |
| Need to give more detections for reflection paper |
| Mm...maybe go over the group projects just a little bit more to make sure everyone understands what exactly is expected... |
| when doing projects, inform the students what needs to be done at least a month before it is due, instead of a week. |
| Nothing at this time |
| Make the lectures more fun! |
| The group presentations needs to clearly explained and not feel so rushed. He should pick the groups instead of people picking for themselves. |
| i think trying to stick to the syllabus he gave us at the beginning of the year would be great and also remembering what was put on the syllabus would help the class run a lot smoother. |
| None. |
| announce changes before putting them into affect. |
| none. |
| actually follow what was written on the schedule and give clearer deadlines on assignments |
| No hints on quizzes and no open book exams. |
| No changes Mr. Acabado! You're already a good teacher. |
| Make lectures more interesting and applicable to course material in a clear and effective way. |
| A more consistent and visible schedule. Sometimes it was difficult to find out what was due and when. |
|
|

| YES |
| Yes because he is an easy A. |
| Yes because he knows the subject well. |
| yes i would recommend him. i really like that he gives the students a chance to change their grade by giving extra credit and making up late assignments. i know it's a lot more work for him, but myself and i'm sure all the other students really appreciate the opportunity to better their grade and the work that he puts in to grade the assignments. |

16. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
|
| He trys to be fair, enjoys the subject he teaches |
| He knows his subject area very well. I enjoyed his online/in-class methods of teaching. |
| what he was teaching followed a lot of his own personal examples from his study, this made a bit easier to understand and grasp concepts. Also, did a lot of discussions. |
| He is very fair and wants you to comprehend his lectures. |
| The instructor was very good at choosing interesting and engaging materiel to for the class. While the textbook was nothing to write home about, all the supplemental reading was excellent. The in class video presentations were also quite edifying. |
| Has experience in the field which helped us better understand the topic. |
| He knew the subject really well and seemed like he could easily talk to the students and teach without papers or powerpoints. |
| He knows a lot on the subject area. |
| The instructor knows subject area and really encourages students to think about concepts and apply them to their lives. |
| He did a great job helping us when we were confused or needed help. He also did a good job explaining the subject and the chapters that we went over. |
| He seems passionate about the subject that he teaches. |
| He was very knowledgeable in the subject. |
| he explained things well most of the time so we could all understand him
and he encouraged us to participate in class and online discussions. |
| Knew a lot about the subject. |
| he explains our lecture detailed. |
| knows a lot about anthropology |
| He was very knowledgeable about the subject matter. I think he had problems engaging the students or sparking debate. |
| He was very knowledgeable in his field. Very motivated about what he's teaching. |
| knowing his subject |
| knows what he's teaching about, and is open to comments and corrections |
| Extremely knowledgeable in this field. He could & did related his experiences as a student and an anthropologist in his material. |
| His lectures are very intesresting |
| -encouraging
-intelligent
-funny |
| He knew his subject very well. Fair with his grading procedures. He is a nice guy. |
| he provides alot of resources to help you on studying, homeworks, and exams. He also reminds us for those assignments also, which is super helpful! |
| Professor Acabado knows he subject of anthropology very well. |
| His major strengths as a teacher would be his extensive knowledge and passion over the subject. |

18. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
|
| not so many papers |
| I think he should do more in-class activities sort of thing, you know get the students to come to class. for the most part everything was online. It's as though there were no point in being in class because all the notes, summaries etc. were online. |
| When lecturing, he digressed a lot. |
| The ethnography project should bet better explained, possibly devoting a class period to it.
Also, the exercises should be made available further in advance of their due dates if possible. |
| No changes. Had a fun time in class and learned a lot. |
| I think the syllabus could've changed a bit because of the dates quizzes and summaries were due were all odd days when they probably should've been due the day of the class, and also the way he spoke wasn't always clear, he knew the material but couldn't speak or articulate well maybe it could've been because of his accent or what not. |
| STAY ON SYLLABUS, PLEASE. |
| I suggest that he should make the class participate more, have class discussion. |
| A little less writing and more in class interaction.
This class was very writing intensive for a class that does not count for writing intensive. I actually wrote more papers in this class than we did for my writing intensive English class that I was taking this same semester. |
| More clear cut about deadlines. Explain exactly what is expected. |
| to try to explain more of what he expects from us |
| Grade tests and quizzes earlier and update our grades faster. |
| explain our text book more. |
| suggested an extra credit field trip but ended up not doing it for some reason. field trips would
make the class more fun and interesting |
| More interactive assignments, more dialogue. |
| There was a LOT of reading in the class. Sometimes it was a little over bearing. It would have been great if there was a little less reading material. However, on the other hand the reading material gave us ample opportunity to generate extra credit. |
| more engagement or activities on topics covered |
| forcing students to speak and contribute to "class discussions" |
| nothing, I really liked his method of teaching, made my mornings better |
| NONE! He was great! |
| The only change that I could suggest is how you acknowledge the class/ student when someone decides to actually gather enough gut inside to speak or commment about the lecture, your usual response is nothing. Sometimes it seems like you didnt hear the person state their opionion. Sometimes an encouraging, "thats a good point" or "what about this..." might ingnite more interaction with the class. |
| explain the assignments more thoroughly. |
| To teach more on cultural anthropology and go deeper into the subject maybe with more films
(though we had some). Also, though I did enjoy the lectures sometimes too much lecturing is too
much on the brain. At times I felt that it went in one ear and out the other. |
| My only suggestion would be is to somehow lively up your Chapter presentation. You have a great amount of knowledge for the subject but you tend to just read the PowerPoint presentation that is on the computer screen instead of elaborating on it.
I hate to say this but maybe you could work on your pronunciation a bit more. It's often hard to decipher what word was said but eventually, you could put 2 and 2 together. |
| grading policy is confusing. is a late summary considered extra credit or late? how late is too late? |
|
|
19. How did the instructor show concern for students?
|
| understood when we had a problem or couldnt turn in an assignment right away. |
| He would always e-mail us reminders. |
| He asked questions and answered them at all times. |
| He made sure that we were aware of our grades, and was quick to reply when students made online inquiries. |
| He didn't really, emailing was hard to get through with him, responses were always late and didn't always answer my questions thoroughly. |
| He helped us study. |
| The instructor was alaways available through email, appointments, before and after classes. |
| He would listen to our suggestions and from there try to negotiate in a way for everyone. |
| He always let us know of any changes to the requirements and grading. |
| Students in general he showed concern for, individual students he seemed like he didn't want to
listen. |
| he was avaiable most of the time after class and during office hours |
| Asking questions. |
| he responds our email very quickly. |
| gave a lot of extra credit opportunities |
| He gave many opportunities for extra credit for those students that were not doing well in the class. |
| In advance he would let us know what can be done to improve. gave extra credits. |
| he asks sincere questions |
| He gave several opportunities to re-write assignments |
| Mr. Acabado showed concern for his students by taking advantage of Laulima. He allowed us
assignments we could do extra credit with if we went out and observed field studies ourselves
which helped me understand the course material for Anthropology. |
| He was usually avaliable for questions via email. |
| he kept sending out reminders. |
| Professor Acabado always showed concern for his students. He was very fair in grading and took
the time to listen to suggestions that his students had. |
| He showed concern for students by listening to our questions & concerns. He was always there with an open ear & without judgment. |
|
|
20. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
|
| Yes! |
| Yes! He explains things very clearly and will take the time to go over things if you do not understand. |
| Yes I would. He is very knowledgeable and fun. He has great stories, makes you want to come to class. |
| Yes, I would recommend this instructor. He covers the materiel that he tests on very thoroughly and clearly, and assigns interesting reading. |
| Yes. He knew his stuff and was willing to help. |
| I wouldn't recomment this teacher because his class is sort of not clear and straightforward and in class when he lectures, it isn't stuff in the book we are supposed to read and not in the test either. |
| Yes, other than straying from the syllabus, he was on it most of the time. |
| Yes. The professor shows concern for students, knows subject area, provides intersting information regarding subject area that is relevant to students' lives, and provides a great classroom environment. |
| Yes, he is a very caring, nice, and cool teacher who knows his subject well. |
| yes, but be prepared to do a lot of writing. |
| I'm sorry but no. I might as well have taken the course online. I didn't learn anything from him
directly, but instead had to study the textbook and powerpoints myself. I received no assistance
from him as far as learning aside from him providing resources. I couldn't understand him, and
classroom sessions were a waste of time seeing as how I had to teach myself the material. I have
no doubt that he knows what he's talking about, he just couldn't communicate that information very
well. |
| yes because he tries to make it easy for us to do our work and tries to give us hints. |
| Yes. He knows his stuff. |
| explain our text book more detailed, maybe we will feel better. |
| he is an ok teacher and would recommend |
| Not sure. |
| Yes, this instructor was extremely fair. His class is very interesting. |
| Yes, hes lectures are easy to follow and helps you along the way. |
| Sure, he's fair enough. |
| Yes, I would (and have) recommended this instructor to other students. |
| He is smart and funny |
| YES, he knows his material because he is an adventurer! He was great to have as a teacher! |
| Yes. Can be an interesting class if you show up and pay attention. |
| yes i would, he gave me chances to make up and was very professional about it. |
| Yes, I would recommend Professor Acabado because I learned a lot from the course and he was fair
and understood the students concerns. |
| I would recommend this instructor to students because if you want a teacher who is passionate about their subject, Stephen is the teacher to go to. It is best to brush up on the reading material before going to class so you have a better understanding of what it is that he is going over in class. |

|
| Excellent teacher! |
| I enjoyed his class very much. |
| I believe this class could've been more exciting if he proposed some activities to gather the students and really get more involved especially with a class like this, involving culture and alot of inclass activities and assignments could help participation become easier. |
| GOOD JOB! |
| Keep up the good work :) |
| I liked the idea of the Field Study project that we did. |
| I did not enjoy the teaching. |
| Nothing. |
| He is a very nice teacher. |
| has an accent so had a hard time understanding him sometimes |
| n/a |
| Tries really hard and put a lot of effort into lecture. |
| Good job. Enjoyable class. Very knowledgeable professor. |
| Thanks for all the suggestions |
| GREAT JOB!!! He will be missed! |
| I know people might have other comments about the way Mr. A speaks. I can honestly say his accent was initally hard to understand, but throughout the semester, it became a lot easier to understand. Overall Mr. A is a good teacher with a lot of knowledge and a lot to offer. I wish him the best of luck with his career and schooling. |
| Keep up the great work & good luck with your pH.D degree. |
| i did not receive a reply to an email sent. it was not very important to me because it would only
change a point or maybe half a point so wasn't worth asking again, but no response is
disappointing
overall, the class was ok. i learned some interesting things and am still somewhat curious about
anthropology |
