10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Clinical time.
Clinical hours were the most valuable. I learned a lot from my mentor and became more confident working on the floor.
taking on the full patient load
Working on the unit with my preceptor was most valuable.
The clinical portion
Clinical hours/ time and work with my preceptor
Applicationof quality management concepts in actual project
The clinical experience itself was phenomenal. I felt that I have learned the most from this semester and have better prepared myself for my future. However, the instructor was a great hindrance on my learning and diminished my overall experience.
The clinical hours of this class where vital to my nursing education. I feel that the time I spent in clinical this semester solidified many of the things I have been learning throughout nursing school. Without this semester I do not think that I would feel as confident as I am now to work as a RN.
My experiences in the OR and my mentor.
Clinical experience and preceptorship
Every clinical worked was valuable. I found the most valuable aspect of clinical was learning communication with the team and time management.

The clinical hours
She provided good feedback on assignments, but not on weekly reports.
Clinical hours.
Hands on experience with little guidance and more independence. Able to learn to manage own time
The clinical itself.
The clinical hours. The freedom to set my own schedule and work with different mentors. Proff Alvaro was easily approachable :)
OR
Clinical experience, preceptorship, wonderful teacher
I enjoyed every minute of every clinical.
The QM paper
15. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
QM project.
working things out regarding the QM project because the professor didn't seem to know what was told to us in class.
The Quality Management project
Having to email the instructor assignments through her personal email and laulima.
Prof. Alvaro is unprofessional, unorganized, and out of her mind. She will literally bring up the QMP for example, mention something about clinical hours, then repeat word for word what she had originally said about the QMP all in the same sentance. She told me I looked ragged, which I thought was neither true nor relevant, and said she was personally "so disappointed" in me when I asked to leave the poster presentation 45 minutes early (it was a 5 hour presentation) in order to make it to work- a job which secures my RN position. She over uses quotation marks also, very weird.
Too many unnecessary assignments. It took away from the whole concept of the course.
The instructor. It started off as with orienting ourselves to our instructor and group, and things seemed fine until we got into the meat of the semester. She provided us with very little information on our projects and provided very little help aside from last minute feedback. She would require certain criteria and tell us, after she corrected our papers, that she had changed it. We would agree to certain guidelines, though the next time we saw her, she would claim that she said nothing of the sort. Even after multiple submissions of assignments, she claims she lost them or they could not be found in her email or files. Her emails were confusing, sarcastic, and insulting. She stresses professionalism, but does not practice it, as I have heard from staff on my unit that she openly expresses anger by yelling, and talking to people with an angry tone; yet we were reprimanded because we were saying 'hi, professor' or 'hey, professor' on the unit. There were no improvements of any of these categories throughout the semester.
I think that Proff. Alvaro was extremely difficult to communicate with and I did not feel that she contributed to my QM project. When she worked with me to refine my paper she would only critique my presentation (color of slides, APA format) but did not seem able to understand the content of my research. I would have to explain to her my QM project every time we met and she did not have any feedback for me regarding content. I also feel that she as unprofessional in her appearances to my clinical site. She seemed flustered and stressed, so much so that my mentor asked if she was ok. She was also unorganized, she didi not know how to use laulima for the first half of the semester so I was unable to submit assignments there. She required us to turn in hard copies and e-mail to two email addresses of all of our assignments.
QM Project
Confusing QM guidelines
none.
Having to submit weekly report on Laulima and by email to the instructor. One submission should be enough.
16. Other comments:
Professor Alvaro seemed very disorganized and stressed this semester. There would be miscommunication among us students. She would say one thing and mean another. It was very stressful to get through this semester.
I have never encountered a clinical instructor like this, throughout my previous semesters. I am sorely dissapointed to have such as instructor in my last semester, though it has been offset by my excellent clinical. I hope that other semesters will have a better experience. However, as of now, I would not recommend taking a clinical with this instructor, at all.
I suggest getting rid of the QM project and adding 50 extra clinical hours.
I really appreciate my experience, thank you

Hands on work with fellow classmates and patient volunteers.
Having the opportunity to practice the skills that I learned in lecture and lab in a hospital setting on a live patient.
the hands on experience and demonstrations provided by the caring professor.
What I found most valuable was learning how to properly do a health interview and physical assessment.
What I value most about this course was learning how to use the equipments such as the otoscope and opthalmoscope. I felt like it was a good experience to work with the equipments because it helped me gain more knowledge on how to use the instruments more effectively. I also felt that everything learn in the lab is actually valuable because I will be using what I have learned in the real world.
Going to the clinical sites and interacting with patients
Clinicals!
Honestly, the most valuable aspect of this course was the fact that Professor Alvaro set her standards high. Yes, it was difficult and at times, and we found it "unfair" that we had it so hard, but at the end, we came out on top. We were ahead of everyone and were able to practice ALL of our new skills at our last clinical. Professor Alvaro also set up sessions for those who felt they needed more time to practice before their competency exam.
I learned skills that I could use for my present clinical experiences, as well, as my future experiences as a nurse. By practicing continuously, I was able to comprehend the course material thoroughly and also able to pass my final competency exam with flying colors!
The clinical lab days where I get to practice the new skills (working in groups and independently) I learned in dry lab and lecture.

23. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Professor Alvaro pushed us to become the best nursing students by making our curriculum more difficult than others. At first I complained, but I realized that I gained more than other students. However we did have some miscommunications, so maybe working more on communicating with students effectively especially with time and dates when it comes to meetings.
Professor Alvaro was readily available outside of class and graded our assignments on time.
always reachable by email or cell phone, and is always super happy to see us! it makes us feel so much closer to her as a professor. but she was more to us than that, she became a friend to us all, and we really bonded as a class
I liked how she always encouraged us to do our best even though her standards were quite high.
Professor Alvaro is a very intelligent and friendly teacher. She was very helpful and answered my questions whenever I asked. I liked how she pushed our clinical class further then the other instructors.
She tried to be available to all students and was willing to answer all questions.
She was very strict and meticulous, which made me work and try my best to learn the procedures.
Same as #13.
Professor Alvaro was very helpful in assisting her students in areas they may need help with. For instance, I needed more help understanding different parts of the physical examination and Professor Alvaro took time to help me practice and learn more about this material. She was available outside of class and made sure that her students were fully comprehending the material.
She thoroughly explains each procedure and the concept behind it. She is also ready to answer any questions asked.
24. Other comments:
We were given more work than we were supposed to; but I guess it was helpful at the end because we became better nursing students and learned more.
I would like if Professor Alvaro was more specific in what she wanted. I feel that sometimes she changes the curriculum back and forth, and it really confused me a little. For example, she would say that we need to do this certain examination for the competency, but later on in the semester tells us that we don't need to do it anymore.
Great teacher and course, but sometimes, teacher becomes lost and contradicts what she is saying. She also needs to be more flexible with her times and stick to her own schedule to prevent her students from feeling stressed about signing up for midterm evaluation times, or competency times.
One thing that I would like to point out is that Professor Alvaro grades harshly. No matter how hard anyone tried, it never seemed to be enough. Week after week, we all tried our best to get full credit on our write-ups, but NO ONE could achieve that. We were always just shy... For example, I wrote one REALLY good write-up. I was sure I would get an awesome grade, but I was wrong. Even my partner had a better grade then me... and I did all the work (he/she just photo copied my stuff). It just sucks that I put so much effort into something and I don't feel like I got the grade I deserved.

15. Other comments:
Don't like how the course was set up. Not being assigned to one preceptor during the semester made it difficult. Looking for home visits and things to do weekly was a hassle for students as public health nurses did not have schedules in advance. Having no preceptor made it seem like there was no focus, feeling very lost at times. Self directed learning is great but didn't work for me in this class. I rather be assigned to a preceptor and follow her throughout the semester.

13. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
None, I'm glad its over with. Communicating with this instructor was a nightmare. She micromanages. She's inprofessional, i.e. answering cell phone and conversing while students are presenting; though she states its for the purpose of the students that she answers her phone, it gives off quite an image when formal student presentations are occuring for agency staff. Evaluations were not credible, remarks such as unprofessional/ rude/ need to improve communication (addressed to multiple students)could not be evidenced or proved by anything, but instead reflected moreso her own behaviors. With high expectattions of student, time was very important: students were scolded for getting gas during clinical since its something that should be done ahead of time, yet late arrivals by the instructor was ok. I felt confidentiality was not maintained, when she left open folders in a public room that revealed student social security numbers and personal information. She appeared to target certain students who voiced their opinions, such as suggestions to lessen driving times and those who needed to clarify assignment info. This was a very stressful clinical, in which one could not feel comfortable to speak up and not be targeted. Though all syllabus reqs were fulfilled, students were lectured about not attending more outside community functions independently.
Instructor let us shadow a Public Health Nurse to learn more about community nursing. Group project and interaction.
This is a perfect example of why it is so awful to register last (as every semester) because we all got stuck with the last choice (Alvaro) and we all had a miserable, useless community health semester. Coimmunity health is a main interest as mine as well, I spent the last 2 summers doing community health nursing and this lab had nothing to do with community health.
This class provided an opporunity to do a community asseessment. I feel this is a valuable assignment but that it is executed very poorly. There is not enough guidance and I feel this paper is over my head at this level. I think most of the paper that was turned in was a lot of guesswork.
NOT the instructor
None.
Clinical activities, supervision, postconference, extra activities such as vaccination, community teaching, dry-lab exercises.
I enjoyed the home visits in this course. This allowed the students to take charge and really work with their skills and community.
I would have to say the home visits and case study. Everything was valuable to my learning about community health.
her passion, patient teaching encourage me to stay on the track.
teaching and home visits
Team work was valuable. I guess the community paper was sort of valuable because I learned some.
