5. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
|
| The helpfulness not only from the students, but as well as the professor.
Also, the professor has been on top of our game and allowed each student to
explore their minds and let us post what we feel. It was the only class where
I believe there was not "wrong" answer. |
| This course being my first writing intensive. I do agree, that this course was rather "intense" and overwhelming at some points. However, it helps motivate me to do more work. Not only for this class but for others as well.
Besides all that, the one thing I will remember the most about this class was the LNF. After writing the LNF, I reflected on certain events that occured to me and I looked back on it on in a totally different perspective. I reflected on my accomplishments which made me feel more better about myself, despite how one event was rather devastating. We live and we learn and I believe that the LNF helped me realize that. |
| workshops |
| how well i have written!! |
| The poetry section we have done. |
| How much work I had to do. |
| The poems and stories I actually wrote, I am proud of them and I am so
surprised I was able to create them. |
| The meeting I had with the teacher, and the difficulties I have in this class. |
| This class has been valuable to me in one specific area; I am much more aware now of my limitations as a writer. I hope that I never forget this. I have take a great many online classes through Leeward Community College, and this was one of the best. I have been very impressed by the level of communication available to me; Professor Van Der Tuin put me at ease from the beginning. There have been a couple of students in particular, who have been a great help in keeping me motivated, and brought humor and fun to the online workshops. |
| The portfolio we produced. |
|
|
6. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
|
| The professor being able to respond back to our questions on time. Also, she
lists our assignments nicely for us. |
| The online workshops proved to be really helpful in this course. After awhile, I got the hang of critiquing others work and knowing my own weak points in my writing from the views of others. I, for one, cannot critique my own paper because everything I write sounds right to me. With the help of my fellow classmates, I was able to determine what areas I needed to work on in order to improve. The workshops should be used for future courses so that it can support a student's writing techniques. |
| Minot's "Three Genres" |
| the fact that melanie is willing to help and give extensions where needed. i like that she understands where we are coming from as students and are willing to work with us when we hit a few "snags". |
| The different learning styles used and all the techniques that go along with it. |
| It helped me think on a deeper level when writing creative material. |
| The phone conference and draft reviews with the professor and the critiques
and edits from the class. The text was also very helpful. |
| Professor Melanie's online course was very organized which made it easy to keep track of due dates
and upcoming assignments. The group sessions where we critiqued/reviewed one another's work
was also very helpful. |
| The teacher is willing to help with assignments and I had the opportunity to use smarthinking. |
| The number one reason I will remember this class is also the most valuable aspect, and this is the awareness of my limitations as a writer. I have a modicum of talent, but not enough to pursue writing as a career. My punctuation and grammar skills need work; I already know this to be true, but in this class I believe I have been able to hone in on just which areas still require the most focus. Ms. Van Der Tuin is by far the most thorough professor I have ever had in regards to her response to my work; this includes both online and on campus courses. Her feedback, in many cases line by line within my works, was both helpful, and encouraging. I have been very impressed with her genuine interest in my work, and her professionalism. I had found sources on the web in the past to help me with this prior to taking this class, but Melanie offered many more and in some cases much better, sources during this class. |
| The instructor was passionate about the course. |
|
|
7. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
|
| The assignment due dates were very easily missed because they were due on
some odd day like Tuesdays. I think it would be better if she gave us until
the end of the week preferably Fridays to turn in our work. |
| None that I can think of at the moment.
I can't complain about the load of work that had to be done because it is a writing intensive. |
| student critiques |
| i realized that i didn't really like this class online. i would have preferred it face to face, in the classroom. |
| As much as I would like to say that there were things that were not valuable I can't. All materials helped and are valuable. |
| The amount of work we had to do |
| Well if I had to choose, um, maybe the blogs were not an asset to me. |
| I found the reading reflections to be tedious and not so necessary, especially when you're putting so
much effort into your drafts and responses to others. I think assigning the reading is important, but
if the student opted to not read it, it would be reflected in the quality of their writing. The reading
reflections seemed to detract from the limited time available for the writing process. |
| Having to wait for the other students in class to turn in their assignments so I can finish mine. |
| Nothing. |

21. Other comments:
|
| loved this class! i wish i didn't fall behind at times, though.. and i wish that it was a classroom class. but, like i said, i love this class.. and the assignments were so fun! i never knew i could write like that! |
| Thank you Melanie! |
| This was a great class. I wanted to learn more about creative writing and
this class did that and so much more. I never thought I would learn so much,
accomplish so much and enjoy it so much! Thank you Professor! |
| I think that the inclusion of workgroups and discussion boards are crucial to the success of an online class, but not everyone is comfortable with this venue, and in this particular class I think I probably overwhelmed the others with the volume of my posts. I would have welcomed a bit more feedback from the other student's. I don't care for the text, "Three Genres"; this is largely due to the style adopted by the author, Stephen Minot, and his selection of poems, prose, and drama. I have never-the-less, gained some helpful information. |
| Fun times! |
