1. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| in this class, i learned many things about life on earth and why things were possible. i also learned that our solar system is unique but there are other solar systems out there that are yet to be discovered. |
| It was great to learn more about the planet we live on and the universe around us. |
| learning about our solar system and universe, how vast and how we are still searching unknown |
| The in class discussions and questions. |
| The writing aspect was most valuable. I was able to understand ideas better when I could combine them in essays. |
| Learning about the world and universe around us |
| understanding how the solar system was formed |
| The videos and video essays were probably the most enjoyable activities since
they allowed us to express our thoughts. It was better than simply writing a
review of what we saw because we were allowed to add our own opinions. |
| The fact that it was a writing intensive course was why it was valuable. |
| everything |
| I really thought the knowledge we got to apply like recognizing constellations were most valuable
because those are real world things. But honestly I learned so much I thought of everything as
valuable. |
| All of the course was informative; nothing seemed superfluous as all we did
was in someway building towards our knowledge. But as this is asking for
specifics, I will say that the videos were relevant and interesting, as were
the lectures and whiteboard. |
| I really enjoyed everything I learned about the constellations and generally the entire course. I really enjoy learning about our solar system. |
| The lectures and reviews we had for tests to make sure we understood the material. |
| the creations of the stars and other planets that could be similar to earth or any other planets, and the chances that there could possible be life on other planets |
| Constellations |
| The content and lectures were the most valuable aspect. |
| Understanding the solar system and the time we spent on the stars in our galaxy and beyond.
Videos on the universe or other planets gave a better view. |
| to be able to identify constellations in the night sky as well as stars and planets. |
| i liked learning about all aspects and this that it was all necessary to learn because it ties everything that we've learned together. |
|
|
2. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| everything taught in this course was valuable to me. |
| It was not very valuable to learn certain tedious facts, but it was a good class. |
| lest was essay test questions and time limit |
| The work book. |
| There was no part of the course that was least valuable. |
| none, very interesting things to know |
| The star show wasn't all that informative even though it covered materials
that we hadn't gone over in class, I still don't think it was appropriate
(plus I didn't want to spend 6 bucks). |
| Certain parts of what we learned I will probably never use in the outside world, but it was still very interesting. |
| nothing |
| None that I can think of. |
| Everything worked out. |
| I honestly thought all the information was useful, interesting, and valuable. |
| None, it was all valuable. |
| nothing was least valuable |
| The star showing being a requirement did not help me complete the course as a whole. |

15. Other comments:
|
| throughout the course my assignments were constantly being graded poorly and unfair due to his mistaking of giving a fair grade. |
| This was a great class and a wonderful writing intensive that I would recommend to other students. I learned many things and have a better perspective on astronomy and the universe as a whole. |
| Kessler did a good job. Everything was done in a timely manner. He explained ideas that we couldn't grasp and if we had a question about an assignment or his grading policy he was open to our comments. |
| none |
| Kessler is passionate about his knowledge of his chosen field and applies it well in the class room |
| I really, really enjoyed this course. The only thing I found that I didn't like so much was the tests
being 25 questions. I found this difficult because getting just three questions wrong already resulted
in a B. Sometimes the questions were a little tricky, which is totally fair, but because of that I feel
like a test of 50 or so questions would benefit students a lot more, giving them a bigger chance to
earn a slightly higher grade. Other than that I loved learning about the things taught in this course
and I though Professor Kessler's teaching was absolutely wonderful, and I would like to say thank
you. |
| Of all my classes, I think I learned the most in this one. He was able to
relate concepts to us which I think is the most challenging part of this
particular class. The information was neither oversaturated nor thin, but
was perfect enough for us to understand without going overboard. |
| The course naterial was very interesting, and I like that he stresses the use of text book reading, note taking, and quizzes. |

15. Other comments:
|
| Some of the labs were not all that fun, but I am glad that some were. Some were very interactive and neat to do. It was a good lab, but we hardly used the required book and that seemed like a waste because it is a large workbook which cannot be used or sold again. Other than that, I am glad I chose this lab to go along with Astronomy 110. |
| -- snipped -- |
| I really enjoyed this lab and would encourage anyone to take it, I learned so much! |
| Mr. Kessler knows his material well and is a fair teacher. I find he makes
it interesting instead of just going into the mathematics of it. He really
makes you think about what you see and read in his class. The experiments
are fun and cool. |
| I liked the hands on experiments but I didn't like if you missed the class that day you can't make it up. |
| None. |
| I learned a lot from taking this lab, and I wish that he taught more astronomy classes. |

2. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| Regularly assigned homework and tests has been most valuable to my learning in this class. |
| The diagrams and examples were particularly interesting. |
| How much the professor new about his course outline. |
| i thought that mr kessler was very organized with his materials and i learned even more than i
thought i would. and we expounded on materials that i already new but now i understand them at
whole new level. I LOVED it when he held a session at the telescope where we got to see the actual
stars through a telescope! he didnt have to do that and it was after school hours and i really
appreciated that! HE IS AWESOME! |
| Professor Kessslers greatest strength is his ability to explain complex scientific knowledge in a way
that I could ultimately understand. This course has left me with a healthy respect for the science of
Astronomy. I have always been a news junky of sorts and having taken this course has broadened
my interests in astronomy, but also physics because as I have learned the two are working hand in
hand in science to help us become more knowledgeable about mans place in the universe. I now
do searches on my favorite news websites like B.B.C. about topics relating to science which was not
something I used to do in the past. I feel that this class has made a lasting impression on my
interest in sciences and would recommend to anyone in the community who would like to learn
about the stars, space and the Earths place in the cosmos to take this class with professor Kessler. |
| Professor Kessler is very thorough in his discussion and is always careful that everyone is sure
about what he taught before moving on. I was especially happy with the way he dealt out
homework, in which he discussed the material in class a little before giving us the assignment.
With a little bit of familiarity about the material my studies have been far more productive at home
and the information has stuck with me more. I wish that more instructors gave their assignments
in the same way as Professor Kessler. |
| I thuroghly enojoyed all the subject material and topics, and I found most of the information valuable in their own right. |
| I really thought that understanding the nature of how our universe formed was valuable. It was interesting and provoked students to make a lot of connections to our physical world.
I also really enjoyed the planetarium classes and the relevant videos we watched on einstein and elemental fusion. |
| The most valuable thing would definitely be the open book tests! Without them I'm pretty sure I would've failed. |
| All of the theories that we've learned about the universe and time. |
| Everything, from constellations to galaxies and individual star make up. |
| I thought everything I learned was valuable. We learned about the stars nd plants in the sky and how they came to be. |
| Everything was valuable that I learned in Astronomy. |
| The most valuable was about the information on our own planet. Things like the distance we stood from the sun, and the matter or material that we were made of seemed to be more valuable to me. Also about the galaxy we were living in and about how there are so much other galaxies out there that we can't even comprehend what other planets and stars are out there. |
| i find that everything that Mr. Kessler teaches us is always valuable. |
| everything in this class was something new for me so it was a valuable but the stuff i found most interesting were how thing in space are created. |
| understanding the universe as a whole and how earth came to be and how lucky we are to be here. |
| The way everything in space works. I learned a lot about how stars are formed, etc. That i didn't know nothing about before i took this course. |
| Everything covered was useful. The class went over the general areas of astronomy and what it actually consists of. |
| The way the class was organized so that Monday was lecture day, Wednesday was homework and wk book day and Friday was movie and test day, worked really well. I think the Elmo was really helpful becuase it allowed us to see the pictures and information really well. |
| The galaxies |
| the imaginarium |
| Well, just basically i enjoyed astronomy. |
| Learning the basics on how the Universe was created in the first place because everything else is based off that. |
| The most valuable aspect of the course was the workbook. It made use of active learning, which I
feel is the key to understanding a subject. Second to the workbook would be the assigned readings
in the textbook. Assigned readings in the textbook |
| constellations |
| class was very good |
|
|
3. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| There was nothing of little value in this course. Everything we learned or talked about has great
meaning to the understanding of this course. |
| The long equations to show how certain celestial information was derived from other information
were tiresome. |
| Some of his course outline could use a little work. |
| i dont think there was anything of no value in this course. |
| I can't think of a class I attended or assignment I did that did not improve my understanding of the
subject. |
| Pertaining to academic value there was one assignment that did not help me prepare for a test or
learn much more than i already have in class. We were required to attend a show at the
Imaginarium, take notes on it and turn in a paper describing what we learned or found most
interesting. While this assignment was insightful and interesting it did not do much to further my
understanding of astronomy beyond that which i had already learned in class from Professor
Kessler. I still found it extremely enjoyable though. |
| The amount of time going over scientific notation, but that is a personal bias due to having used in math and science since sophmore year high school. |
| Least valuable were the astronomy workbooks. We had to spend money on something we barely even used. Waste! |
| I would have to say none. |
| Well, I don't think any of it was least valuable. I really ejoyed the subject. |
| none |
| Well, I found that all information on astronomy is pretty important, especially since it deals with daily life, so as to aspects that were least valuable I would say none. |
| i find every aspect of the course very interesting but at times it gets boring. |
| Nothing... everything was interesting and new. |
| I didn't really think there were things in this course that were least valuable, i think everything you learn in a course is valuable in some way. :) |
| Least valuable...? more like least interesting. The information was valuable because it pertained to the greenhouse effect and the magnetic field of a planet. But it wasn't all that interesting. |
| I think sometimes there was a little too much information for one day. |
| Light |
| workbook |
| Least valuable, well lectures..were alright. when there were quizes or midterms, i think what could
have been more better for our learning would be if we got more study guide handouts then just at
the end for our final. |
| I thought everything was valuable |
| Lectures and assigned questions from the textbook. |
| open book tests |
| none |

| Great class from a great teacher. Listen to what students are saying and allow them to figure out
answers to strengthen their knowledge of the course material. Don't rush to answer back with a
straight answer, explain and get students to think for themselves. Overall, I learned a great deal
from this course. Thank you!!! |
| Though not a science major, I am happy to have taken this class. |
| Mr Kessler is awesome!!! He sure knows his stuff! he makes aspects that are hard to grasp, very
clear and easy to understand! he is very kind personable. And most importantly,he is concerned for
his students success! I really enjoyed this class!! |
| I would sign up for a more advanced class with professor Kessler if was offered at Windward. |
| There is a lot to comprehend in astronomy and Marvin Kessler does an excellent job in making it
understandable. He is obviously passionate with his field of study and enjoys answering questions
more than most instructors. throughout the semester i have enjoyed how much i have learned and
was amazed at how well it stuck with me in the duration of the course. Professor Kessler's class
has been the highlight of my school day this semester. |

| more planetarium classes and observatory opportunities |
| The lectures were a drag. It felt as though time literally stood still. |
| I would suggest his class to any student interested in have a class with a good instructor. |
| I really enjoyed this class and learned a lot of new things about our galaxy. |
| Try involve more hands on activities to get student cooperation. Also to not always lecture because some material is so complex students get confused and sometimes loss. |
| interesting class. Loved how simple the grading system is, no surprises. |
| Thanks for being a great Professor. I really enjoyed your class and also learned a lot more than i knew before i entered this course. :) I really appreciate your hard work and the time you put in to prepare the lessons, etc. Thanks again. |
| This class was hella boring |
| This class could use some excitement. |
| I feel that more interactive techniques/tutorials should be integrated into the lectures. |
