8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
This course helped me to view art and the art industry differently. It was effective in showing me how and what artists and non artists value. I got to see how ideologies have a huge factor in art as well as getting to see where art is now heading.
Reading the blogs and seeing different perspectives about a similar topic allowed for a constant chance for growth. The LC posts were very helpful in preparing for class discussion.
Thinking critically, and questioning everything, learning outside of the class
Billie has a way of challenging you to think about matters you would usually push aside. Perhaps one of the most valuable class discussions i'll be taking away from UH manoa happened inside ART 302. She balanced authority and yet felt very relatable and easy to talk to. A great, humble, intelligent professor who I respect so much.
I found the reading and group discussion very helpful
The class discussions were the most valuable. The concepts and the readings can be difficult to decipher, so listening to everyone share their opinion can help make it clearer or confirm that it's just mind boggling. Overall the discussions just put things on a more human level.
I thought this was a great crash course on a very challenging and complex subject. I definitely learned a lot from this class. This course taught me to question things, and it made be more cognizant of the all the goings-on in the arts/art world. It prompted me to really think about why I do what I do.
Great discussions and overall approach to Art theory. Very good job at breaking it down.
The selected readings were great. Class discussions were valuable. Billie did a great job of provoking critical thought and creating a comfortable atmosphere for student discourse. Our "field trips" to the John Young Museum and Main Gallery helped us to put some of the theory discussed into practice and I think helped with an overall understanding of course content.

15. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
I think Billie could have better or more clearly explained the grading. Maybe she could have made a clearer outline?
Perhaps a brief overview of what we learned or spoke about at the last class, with more time focused on LC information/readings. It felt a little crunched for time with all the content, but ultimately Bille was very insightful and informative. It felt a bit scattered to check myuh for emails and the wordpress, so maybe keep it all on wordpress in a separate tab?
A little too much reading, break in between are helpful, attending lectures are helpful and interesting
I can't think of anything that could improve Billies style of teaching. It's incredible that shes relatively new as a UH professor and yet has this way of getting across to her students so effectively--more so than older professors that have been doing this for decades.
Having accurate page numbers so it is easier to find the readings.
The integration of class discussions and ppt presentations was good. The mixture of media, such as, videos, pictures, and summaries was helpful. I think the room setting was just weird, the tables just kind of separated everyone and made it difficult to interact as a class. My biggest suggestion for improvement is to follow the grading guidelines. They don't seem to be enforced in class; people constantly come late or just don't show up to class; many people aren't doing well on the quizzes even when you started giving the questions out beforehand; a few times we've just skipped over blog debriefing or had minimal LC presentations; not everyone does the blog posts; almost no one did the reading quotes and questions, so you just dropped it. I think wiggle room is ok and giving way to reason is ok, but even with that in mind it doesn't seem like people would be doing well in this class if you're sticking to your grading guidelines. Not many people take advantage of the extra credit opportunities either, so I really wonder if people are passing or just barely passing or if they're going to be exempt from the policy, which would be very unfair to those who put in the effort to actually come to class and do all the assignments. If you set rules, those rules should be enforced instead of being dumbed down.
No suggestions. Billie's teaching styles/methods suit the course perfectly. Considering the large amount of material this course has to cover, Billie does a great job of balancing out all the content. I loved that Billie fostered a really healthy and positive classroom environment for open discussion. The fact that it's a discussion-based course vs lecture, makes it way more engaging and beneficial, especially for a subject such as art theory & criticism.
More time for the project.
The reader was very confusing and unclear and made following the course materials difficult. Sometimes even falling behind because of reading incorrect readings.
That course reader was a terrible, unorganized mess. I hope in the future it will be easier to navigate!
I wish more of the class were active in discussions. Not sure what Billie could have done to facilitate this. It seemed some people were reluctant to contribute.

Bille had a very good teaching style. She was patient, helped to prompt blog and in class discussion, and even took the time to learn everyone's name. She changed it up mid semester and presented the quiz questions beforehand to help us have a better understanding of the direction of the readings. That was appreciated! I would recommend Bille to other students!
I hope Billie pursues her role as a professor in a college setting. However, no matter what she decides to do she's going to succeed with ease. Her attitude towards life and her students make heavy content classes like this bearable. She's unbelievably insightful and really really knows what she's talking about. Great person and teacher!
Very informative. I learned a lot.

Overall great job, wonderful instructor.
I thought the class blog was a great way to supplement the class discussions. Discussions that may have fallen flat in class were often fleshed out on the blog, and students who were quiet in class seemed more willing to voice their thoughts online.

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The course packet with a variety of sources and authors provided the best, most well-rounded perspective in a course I've ever experienced.
Basic lessons of what is art, deriving meaning, and art's role in society/economics were really helpful and eye-opening. They made me think more about art and it's role in my life which is definitely key to me becoming a better artist.
The reading material
Pecha Kucha and helping us develop conversations about our work.
Cultural awareness. Signs and symbols we take for granted. Reality of art world.
I felt like every class was valuable, because we had reading the night before and discuss the reading in the next class. If we missed one class we will miss out on important discussions. Also she is very encouraging to students for participation.
I valued the reflections and insightful discussions that were promoted. I also valued the personal theory crafting and theory analysis of notable artists / movements / cultures.
The information from the first unit of the class, examining how art is perceived and viewed.
Each contents we learned are valuable. But we need to time to discuss and absorb each contents.
This course taught me how to analyze the images that have been introduced into my life. Being able to understand and decipher how imagery has shaped the lives of many is a valuable tool that I will use to better inform how I create images.
The PK was an excelent way to see where we are as artists.
in-class discussion of topics.. and probably seeing everyone's process in Pecha Kucha
Discussion of different perspectives on a topic or idea. I think hearing what others had to say, when people would speak, were nice to hear and to compare to your own ideas and beliefs.
Gaining knowledge of different theories from the readings
discussions and examples. since this class is based upon theory and criticism, i think its important to show examples that we can then synthesis a reasoning as to why it is how it is.
Having weekly blog posts helped to generate ideas and gain different perspectives of peers based on the materials. We had several insightful guest artist talks that framed theory and practice as an artist in a way that encourages and challenges the way we think as students pursuing an art life. I think discussion/dialogue in the class is imperative as well.
Blog posts made me analyze what I've read more. Plus it gave me the opportunity to see what others are thinking which is very interesting.
In my opinion one of the things that hit me the most in this class was the group discussions. This helped me better understand the material.
Billie; student-to-student communication; daily quizzes to keep students accountable for readings; presentations (Pecha Kucha, Lead Contributor); blog posts
Learning about the artist's role in society and how other artists approach the idea of creating art in the real world.
We were able to explore many interesting topics and content that I probably would not have looked into had I not taken this class, I really enjoyed the way Billie created an atmosphere that was very structured and we covered a lot of complex material yet I was able to understand them through her lectures and readings. She was very helpful and I felt that she really cared that the students were understanding everything and that she really wanted us to take what we were learning and apply it to our majors or practices. She was always willing to help outside of class and gave really good advice and explanations and possibilities. I really appreciated having Billie for this course.
Content; thoroughness of the material and the amount of resources available for research.
The process of figuring out who you were as an artist, I believe is very important at the BFA level. At the end of the course, you are forced to think about what influences you and why and I definitely believe that is useful and I learned so much about myself and my art through it.
seeing art in a way i never did before. especially the appropriation portion was important to know as a designer, because we work with clients.

Show Ai Wei Wei's Never Sorry
I don't think Billie needs to improve any areas of the course. It was easy to follow along with the way she taught and challenged me enough to help me really study the concepts. Art theory seems like a difficult subject but she made it relatable. I guess the only issue was always running out of time, but it wasn't too bad. It left us with a lot to think about on our own.
Personally I'm not a fan of the Lead contrib. presentations I would have liked a more lecture style.
Many articles are racial bias. These articles can give students a sense of false victimization or bring emotions of pain. For instance, a white girl in our class expressed how she hated being white because of the horrible things her race has done! I tried to calm her down by telling her she was not involved in those atrocious things of past or present. Racism is a learned behavior and these articles though thought provoking can be a double edged sword.
Pack less into one class session.
I really enjoyed her class, I felt that she was very prepared for each lecture. I felt that she was very accommodating and opened to students opinions. Theres not really anything I can think for her to improve on, though the reading is dense, I think that it is necessary and the amount of time provided for each student to complete the reading.
I think we needed a little more re summarization of the material / readings after the LC's because not all presentations were on point. But they were helpful at times.
Less student reviews of the reading and more in class teaching us about these concepts rather than having a classmate essentially reviewing subject matter to the rest of the class.
I just didn't like the class, nothing to do with the teacher. I would of not liked it in any way period.
I think that adding more time for the course overall would help students understand the concepts more clearly through class discussion. Time is often scarce, so a bit more would encourage a healthy dialogue. Exchange of ideas help broaden perspectives.
Perhaps more examples of PKs. Maybe some examples of past students for reference.
Maybe giving check-in assignments every third or quarter of the semester... the material is really overwhelming for multiple reasons (dense writings, challenging concepts, personal critique/application) so having more of a dialogue with the professor may be nice.
Incorporating more group discussion in order to get a better understanding of a theory. The professor's explanations of topics were great but to get a greater view would have been helpful in the more dense topics.
billies good!
Smaller class size would probably allow for a better focus and depth into discussion. Lead contributors as an element to the class should go beyond PowerPoint structures and have a more creative and applied element.
â?¢ MORE discussion groups! â?¢ More small activities â?¢ Field trips â?¢ I would say less readings but honestly, the readings were worth it!
Could give more time to topics that are harder to understand.
Maybe spend less time on Lead contributor presentations, so that we can review what we learned; Reviewing the concepts that we learned in class at the end of each class
Reading was at times very dense and we always ran out of time to cover the material. Some of the LCs were less than helpful with explaining the content, so having some time to actually understand the concepts would be good. The course overall seems rushed and packed with philosophies and concepts that probably would be more appropriate to be in two separated classes. Some of the topics covered were strange and I didn't understand why we learned them.
No suggestions, except I wish there was more class time only because I really wanted to squeeze as much learning out of this course as possible. I wish this class was a year long.
More explanation of concepts as opposed to a short run though. Understandable that the time was very limited but I would've enjoyed spending, say, a whole class on a specific reading or topic going through it more thoroughly.
I felt like the class was a little unorganized. Granted I know that it's Billie's first semester of teaching and she was doing her best, I definitely appreciate the effort and tried to be understanding. However, I felt like the readings that were assigned were not relevant to all disciplines of art and more so for some than others. The readings were extremely dense and there were so many different theories, it was more of a survey than a class about critical analysis that it is difficult for me to retain the information and even repeat what I learned about the actual theory. I do feel like the pecha kucha was a necessary step in thinking about who you are as an artist and I feel like that is definitely the most valuable point of the class. I think that the formate of the pecha kucha should be changed, though. Figuring out who you are as an artist is this huge important question, but then the presentation is condensed into a 4 minute sound bite that I don't think the audience gains much from. In the future, perhaps the PK should be a bit longer to allow the student to speak about his or her work, but still remain a decent length as to not incite rambling. I also wish there were less readings but more time to discuss more important/impactful readings.
pretty upset that she referred to the class as "designers and artists."are designers not artists? material not enough time to cover in class.

one of the best courses I've ever taken, I learned so much. Thank you for making the blog post due dates and times CONSISTENT. This really helped me plan ahead!!!!
I loved this class! It was a lot of reading but I learned so much. It was definitely worth it. The Pecha Kucha right now has helped me become more aware about my art and I feel better about who I am and my place in the art department. Billie helped me learn a lot and become more open to deeper concepts in art.
Awesome class to learn about art theory, Billie seemed very passionate in her teachings and seem very relatable to the students. Easy to talk to and is very supportive to her students. The material and lectures she provided also flowed well into the next lesson. Enjoyable class and worth taking
The class taught me a lot of life lessons that I will carry with me after this class, and the atmosphere created allowed me and other students to become personable with one another. I'd definately recommend this class to anyone.
LC days were not the most effective way of teaching course materials. I felt I really only learned alot about the subject I had to present and not really a whole lot on the other topics because we briefly (6-10 min reports) reviewed them from other students and not the teacher.
I think that this course is valuable for many art major students which is not only BFA but also BA.Ms Lee is well prepared and informed for each assignment and event. Each event and guest speakers are interesting and worth to join.
This course is truly valuable. It challenges me to think about how theory can be applied to images. Knowing how the power of imagery has worked in America and the Arts allows me to become stronger as an artist.
The class was well organized and planned out. Instructions were clear and grading is fair. I learned a lot of different concepts. I also don't feel afraid to ask questions
thank you for this semester. I haven't had a class like yours since Ive been at UHM!
Best class I've taken in a while. You have to be brain dead to not feel inspired or engaged in this course by Billie.
Changed how I see the world I live in now. If I could take this class again to further analyze things, I would. Thank you for being such an enthusiastic teacher!
Good class Billie!
Awesome class. Awesome teacher. I really felt like I learned so much and it felt so short, thats how I know it was a class I truly enjoyed. I think the way I think has expanded and is more open to possibility. We had to really think about ourselves and what we were doing and I really feel that I have grown and become aware of many things.
Billie- I just wanted to say I thought you did an excellent job teaching this class and preparing material and assignments for your students. You were always prepared, open for discussion, and knowledgeable about the subject matter. I was extremely impressed by your professionalism, and your commentary was always at the utmost insight and made me think and question my own concepts and artistic knowledge. It shocks me that you could manage such rigorous material for this class on top of your own PhD studies! Thank you for this class- I am sure I will use your readings and material for reference as I continue in my own graduate studies; you have opened up a lot of student's eyes to innovative and interesting subject matter and should be proud! -k
I think Billie's paintings are beautiful and she should definitely get back into painting! It was a nice touch to see her work and process at the end of the class. I think that should come a little earlier though so that we can relate to her more as an artist, because her work is amazing and we could all learn a lot from her.
intelligent teacher!

I feel like we lucked into a discussion experience that might not be so possible to replicate in a larger class. Sometimes I couldn't articulate responses to the readings well on my own, but responding to Billie's questioning early into discussion each day often was making some of it crystallize and come together as it came out of my mouth. Also having Jess in the room to pitch in with her own experienced and well thought out take helped. Thanks Jess.
Maps
The readings were very useful during this course and having to do the maps along with them made it a lot easier. I think it was hard for some weeks to complete all the maps in such a short period of time, but I felt that all the readings were strategically picked in a way that they all connected.
I was pleased with the amount of readings and assignments given in class, although some readings were longer than others, we were given enough time for each assignment so that nothing felt rushed. I also liked the fact that it was so small. This gave us the opportunity to know each other on a personal level as well as force each student to understand each reading before hand so that the class discussion went smoothly.

15. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
There felt like some effort to not lecture at us but instead try and make us work it out ourselves towards understanding; which for the most part felt good, but there were a couple of texts were I was wishing we could have got led around by the nose slightly more. Luckily we took two classes for Différance so I think it worked out mostly! The time crunch of a summer session is rough, if the semester actually affords a little more having some specific lecture time to lead into some of the more challenging texts (i.e. Myth Today, Différance, Simulacra & Simulations) might be good? The progression of readings felt very good, but its still rough going into some of these 'cold' where the conflux of difficult language and difficult concept left me feeling pretty adrift from understanding at points trying to work through the texts.
The only thing that I believe made this class difficult was having in shoved into such small time. However, I loved the material and class and it pushed me intellectually.
Possibly some more direction with the last project, but also having it open was a great way to see other mediums that people had to offer.

I'm glad I finally got around to taking this class and extra glad it happened under the unique circumstances that allowed a 4 person course to go forward.
Would love to take another class by Billie or at least sit in during her class during the SPRING. Although the small group was great to have, I would also like to see how the large group will interact with each other and how those conversations go. GREAT CLASS! LEARNED A LOT!

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
she's a good instructor who does her best to make the classroom space feel comfortable for learning.
Very good. I liked the content she brought into the classroom and the security of speaking within a group on such controversial topics.
Excellent
She is an effective teacher who knows what she's talking about but, at the same time, is willing to explore ideas and debate them along with us, which is refreshing. Teaching is something that seems to come naturally to her.
She is an extremely nice teacher. Completely able to assist any student in need or in help. The only thing about this course it is a little bit confusing to follow.
She was always well prepared for the class and ready to initiate discussion. She did well in guiding us students during the writing process. It was very kind of you when you'd bring morning treat also.
She provide me with great support and learning that will help me greatly. She was not only able to share significant points and elements in this course but always keep me engaged and interested in and out of class. I enjoyed this course greatly.
She was a very well-prepared professor. She had the class get involved in discussions. It was not just a lecture. She had worth while assignments.
Very nice and motivating professor. She made the 7:30 am class enjoyable and made herself approachable for help and guidance on the course. All of the material was engaging and exciting to learn about. Overall, I would love to take more classes with her, I feel like she challenged me to think differently and to become an active member in the class and to learn more about myself and my role in America.
She is very intelligent and always involved with each of us. She is very easy to talk to and this adds to the learning experience by making us comfortable and able to talk to her and ask questions. She is brilliant and a fantastic professor and I would recommend any class she teaches because I know she will help you learn and will give you what you are paying for and more.
Very good instructor who includes interesting course material. I like that the class had a heavy discussion base. Walking away from this course I feel I've learned a lot about the society I live in and my eyes have been opened if you will to how different one persons life is from another.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Since it was a WI class, we wrote a lot, but not in the form of so many essays. Instead, we wrote a lot of blogs which i enjoyed. It was a short way to get everyone's opinions and ideas out there in a more comfortable way.
I especially liked the cultural aspect of the class. I know Hawaii culture but I do not know other cultures on the mainland very well so it was nice to learn more about that.
I like the class content as it reveals the fact in another aspect. Also, the instructor is very well-prepared and conscientious.
Class discussions
I loved how interactive she made us all be.
The use of the Blog! It was something different from my other courses I've ever taken and feel like this was useful.
I enjoyed class discussion the most. I was able to be open and comfortable with sharing my view and knowledge with the class and instructor every time.
I liked learning about all the different cultures within America.
I liked the class discussions, I felt like the discussion always lead to more interesting ways of interpreting the assigned material. It also helped me understand the readings better and build off of what my peers in class took away from the readings.
The online blog prompts.
That the classes were heavily discussion based because it gave me the chance to hear different and opposing viewpoints as well as giving me a better understanding of what I believe in.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The writing workshops
I did not particularly like the writing portion of the course. I know it is a writing intensive but I didn't really like the weekly blog posts. This being because I feel like writing on an online blog is very casual for many of us and it was a stretch trying to create formal responses on the blog site. I can't speak for anyone else but I was not particularly in favor of the blog posts.
I don't know as everything in the class is really awesome.
there was a lot of reading, which would've been fine if we had the opportunity to talk about them/digest them thoroughly. Less is more.
The blog, i feel as though it would be easier if we didn't have roles.
It was just so early! But other than that, I enjoyed much of it.
there was nothing about the course that i disliked.
I liked the course.
Sometimes I had a hard time understanding the readings and I would fall behind so I would have to play catch up. If I didn't have such a hectic schedule I probably would have been able to analyze the readings a little further.
the formatting of the papers just because it wasn't MLA per say so it was just different from what I'm used to.
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
It covers a lot of topics over a short amount of time while still going pretty in depth into the topics. It's interactive but not too uncomfortable.
I thoroughly enjoyed this class. It was very early in the morning and I did not love EVERY aspect of it, but I certainly am taking a lot away from the class.
very good
I would take it again/recommend this course to my friends.
It is fun, worth taking.
I would recommend this course to a friend.
Is a very interesting class. I was able to be opened minded more towards others views culture, opinion, and thoughts. I also learned how to expand my views on art, culture, and history.
loved it and I truly enjoyed learning about America in a new way. It has made me think differently about the different aspect of America and has excited me to become more aware of the issues we still face to this day. I hope that I am able to take what I learned and pass it on to others, and also use this knowledge in my future classes. I also hope that I get a chance to take another AMST course.
I would highly recommend this course to anyone and everyone considering this course. It is informative, thought provoking, and challenging in all the right ways.
Great course, interesting course material and engaging discussions

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
She is a great teacher that brings a lot of new and interesting ways to go at learning. I just struggled with seeing the importance of some of the class material so i think that conflicted.. I wish she taught some business courses!;)
She made the class very interactive and fun to be in, thus making it easier to learn and be open to the material. She was very friendly and not intimidating which helped a lot being a freshman in a class of a lot of upper class students.
Positive. I really enjoyed her class and methods of teaching. Her style of teaching isn't like most typical college lectures, rather it is more based off class discussions which I found to be very beneficial.
I really enjoyed Mrs. Lee as a professor. SHe kept the class engaged and interested. She is really on top of her work and always responded to your emails as soon as possible. She definitely helped me with my writing and made it more in depth. The way she kept the vibe casual made it so there was no pressure. I think she is an awesome professor.
Very good teacher
she is a very good teacher. She knows how to engage with her students, as well as make students engage with other students. Her teaching methods are different but very effective, and I liked it. She is very knowledgeable in the material and find relevant sources that relate to her students. Overall, she is very good.
Boeun Lee is a great teacher. She makes class so much more interesting, fun, and keeps us wanting to learn. I have learned so much in her class, and I can honestly say that Ive walked out with an open mind. We need more teachers like her. So, my over evaluation on her is 10 out of 10. Shes always there to answer questions and she's soo helpful.
She is a great instructor and help us understand the course's theme.
I love her way of getting everyone to get into conversation about the topic. It is quite effective. The sources we used for the course also got me more interested in our society. It makes me want to learn more about that rather than going further into my pursued major.
great enthusiastic teacher, excited about subject and engages students in discussions
She is awesome. She was really helpful and understanding. She encouraged a lot of class discussion and really got everyone involved.
Great teacher! She made the classroom atmosphere feel easy-going and fun. It was more than just a writing intensive class and made you look forward each week to the topics because they were interesting topics that sparked a lot of conversation. She was friendly and open and made you feel comfortable in class by having everyone get to know each other and was always helpful if you didn't understand something or just needed more help. I really enjoyed this class and I feel like I improved my writing skills as well!
Vert good
very interesting course overall. lots of assignments so necessary to keep up with everything but worth the effort :D

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
A new theme every week, it was nice to have a frequent change
I really enjoyed class discussions. They were very effective and brought out great ideas. It also helped me personally to not be afraid to input my ideas.
Learning about all the different topics relating to America's history.
I like how we had a blog post every week. The blogs was an interactive way for people to see your writing and it kind of brought the class together.
Class Discussion
I liked her teaching method. Its not so focused of lecture, but rather a discussion that offers multiple views from people. By having discussions in class and online, it let students learn from one another and no so much from a book. I think that way it keeps students more interested and engaged in the class.
I really enjoyed the blog. It really made bloggers really thing and anaylis what the class topic was for the week. I enjoyed our class discussions, it was always interesting, left me wanting to learn more. I appreciate her sweets in morning, yes sweet do help energize me in the morning, thank you Lee!
The aspects that i liked best was group discussions the blog posts and the writing workshop
The reality of our culture and how it evolved over time. It opened my eyes to what should be heard and spoken in classes to expose the truth of the not so "freedom land."
Learning new perspectives and being able to express my opinion
The blog posts
I liked how the class felt warm and welcoming and everyone was always talking, we had really great discussions, the size of the class contributed as well I'm sure.
i like the fact that the students are given free will to write about personal experiences and interests that relate to the course material. makes the class much more interesting and not as mundane as other courses
The unit presentations. They allowed us to analyze the info, but still let us present them in a fun way, if you choose to do so.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The blog. I know it was a writing intensive class and it was a different approach at fulfilling that, but i am very busy with work and other classes so it was hard to meet a deadline every week instead of there or four papers i could have pre-planned for
It was hard to keep up with the blogs with all the different due dates. They were effective in bringing ideas together but confusing on which materials to read and when to post etc.
Class was too early.
The aspects of the course that I liked the least would honestly just be the early timing of it.
Readings
There wasn't much I didn't like. I guess perhaps reading the material because I found them a bit boring. I liked the visual and shorter readings much better because it allowed for greater discussion.
The only thing that I struggles with was the blogging roles. Other then that, the course was great!
N'A
There isn't much to say about what I liked the least, there actually wasn't any.
some of the readings were difficult to go through
Paper, just because I hate writing long papers
The blog posts each week got kind of exhausting and difficult to handle with everything else going on.
None
lots of writing
Blog post roles. I got a bit confused by who did what at the beginning. I dont know if it can be done differently, but its just a personal opinion.
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Like i said Billy is a great teacher and helped me clarify a lot of things outside of class, but a lot of the topics i already was aware of. I felt i was writing to fulfill prompts i saw little importance in. BUT its probably just my dislike for english classesâ?¦
I had a great experience in this class and would recommend it to peers if they needed an american studies course.
Very positive.
I like the course. I liked all the discussions and how small the class was so the discussions could go in depth. It was an interesting class that I would recommend to incoming freshman.
10/10 ! :D
This was a very good course. I learned a lot and the class discussions allowed for a broader exposure of learning. The writing intensive portions were not that hard. We wrote a lot but it didn't feel like it was that much after all. This course taught me a lot. I also learned a lot from the discussions.
If I can walk out of a class with an open mind, appreciating all the diversity of peoples culture, race, gender, and strengths, then obiviously my overall evaluation is at its most high.
Excellent
It is a great course, I would recommend this course for whoever is looking for a great class that makes you think about where we have grown and what we were taught.
excellent course, learned a lot about the subject
A
Loved this course and teacher, I learned a lot and even though it was a 9 am, I enjoyed going.
Interesting
i liked it alot. thought that most of the topics were relevant to current events and really liked that the topics covered things that the students are able to relate to.
Very positive. Class isnt extremely easy or hard, but very fair. Topics covered are interesting, provided class wants to talk about them.

She's cool. She knows her stuff and she answered our questions
good!
Had good understanding of all the material and did good job with engaging students to participate.
One of the best TA's that I've had the opportunity to learn from. Always encouraged more than just an average conversation within our oral sections. Brought excitement to the class.
Good
Easy to communicate with, and allows everyone to have a say in the discussion
Great
Shes an great TA that help guide her student throughout the semester.
knowlegable and very nice
Billie is a really good TA because she runs the lab classes well. She tries to get everyone in the class to be engaged in the discussion. I think the yarn ball is a creative way to make people talk and to make sure that we all get a chance to speak rather than talking out of turn. The questions she asks the class to get the discussion started are all good and it provokes us to think deeply about the subject at hand.
I was very pleased with Boeun (Billie) as the TA for this course. She almost served as a second professor during lab and really allowed us to take the issues and discussions in whatever way our lab class seemed to go with. She is very knowledgeable and easy to talk to if we didn't understand something.
very effective at facilitating the discussion section of the course.
The debate sections were well run.
good
Solid teacher.
very calm and fair
Good she was a great TA and was really encouraging. I loved the warm up games!!
She did a good job
awesome

She is cool
really down to earth, good to talk to about the material because she is so approachable
Awesome, friendly, fun. She knows her stuff, and she is always willing to help you out if you're having trouble!
I really enjoyed having her as our lab TA because she was very warm and open to everyone. She allowed class discussions to just flow and made everyone feel comfortable.
She is very nice and patient person.
She enjoyed teaching about the subject matter and she found it all interesting. She wanted to build enthusiasm for this topic in her students.

small class I guess
casual talking about the religious assignment and sharing our experiences and listening to others
I liked the Debates I think t was a really good way to fully understand the court cases and each side in depth
The debates. Allowed us to try and go as deep as possible into so many difficult, interesting and important topics that doesn't usually come up in everyday conversations. Challenged to see from both angles, without too much bias.
The discussions reviewing what was said in the lectures
Labs were fun, especially the activities.
The activities the class did during the exercise and the debate sessions.
learning new religions
Discussions/debates
I like the debates because I can hear what other thinks about the issue. It would have been nice if we could pick whether or not we are fore or against though because then our argument would have been stronger because that is how we really feel.
Lab was definitely my favorite. I liked that we were challenged with the debates, even though being assigned a side to take proved to be difficult if we didn't share the same ideas. I liked being able to listen to my peers and their views on certain issues as well as be able to voice my own opinions.
I enjoyed the debates and how students had to consider sides of issues that may be contrary to what they believe in. It allows us all as students to learn to recognize other perspectives.
Debating, had there of been more time I would have liked to debate more topics.
Debates.
the debates
The debates in lab!! It was really interesting seeing both sides of major issues!!
I liked doing the debate the best
shes awesome
Discussion
Discussions were fun
Lee was very chill, easy to work with, that means alot to me.
Having our friendly circle and talking about things we didn't understand; having everyone help each other out.
I enjoyed being able to talk in front of a small group of people and refresh our memories with what we learned every week. it was great to get to know those people better.
That we all had opinions and that we could all listen to each other even though we didn't agree on each others opinions.
I liked being able to discuss about what we talked about in lecture.
I liked the in depth discussions we would have about each topic that Kath was teaching about that week. 50 minutes in lecture on one topic was sometimes hard to grasp, so covering more of that material in discussion for a better understanding, helped.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
time, distance, classroom- general stuff
Some of the exercises that had nothing to do with the class. Kinda pointless
The time. Only because it was at 8:30.
Moments when no one says anything
The color of the ball....
None
learning new things
the exam set-up and readings
I am more on the quiet side so I didn't like how we always had to say something in class but I think the class helped me to be more opinionated and to share what I think.
There wasn't much that I didn't like. I felt like the course was flexible and stimulating.

froot loops cinnamon toast cruch fruity pebbles

Nothing. I loved the lab.
I do not care for the tests
test
Attendance checks
the yarn ball
Having to be right on time for everything. I understand that things have a deadline sometimes but not everyone's schedule is as open as other people.
I enjoyed just being able to talk to others about subjects that were interesting or that were challenging during lecture. We were able to clarify many things during lab.
I didn't like that u word get all nervous sometimes.
I did not like having to do the debates because some of the information was hard to find if it was not in lecture.
Hard to say because I think everything in discussion was fair.
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
I liked this course over all
good
At first wasn't too thrilled about the whole yarn ball theory.. But by the end it grew on me an I think it was a good way to get people to open up more. Overall this section was really helpful and I don't think I would have been as successful at understanding the material with out it.
Thumbs up. A TA to consider for many AMST courses.
Fun class and great instructor
awesome
I would rate this class 10 out 10 due to how prepared everyone was. The exercise everyone went over was fun and everyone engage in a group activity.
hard but i learned new things
average
This is a good lab course and the TA is as knowledgeable as the professor.
I enjoyed having Billie as the TA. She is very enthusiastic and willing to push us and guide us where we need help.
I enjoyed the discussions section of this course very much.
good
Solid course, good structure.
okay
I encouraged my friends to take it. Also warned them that they would need to talk in lab!!
Overall I thought that this course was a good class for me to take
hard but good
Great
okay
Not too bad. I got a lil more insight on some religions and how they work in America. Other than little things here and there i didn't know, i didn't learn a lot however.
great class!
I honestly think I enjoyed this lab because it was so small haha.
I really enjoyed this class because it was a great eye opener. The debates allowed me to see some of the current issues that are affecting America and religion today,
That I'm really happy that I went though this experience. It was really a fun class.
This was a good and interesting course in which I learned a lot of new things.
It was a good course if you're really interested in learning about the religions in America. Helps give you a different perspective on everyones religions.

good job.
I thought the Friday discussion was a little too short. We always hand to end right as the discussions were getting good.

We should have seriously did the "Categories" thing in the beginning of the semester. I really feel that this broke the ice a lot more than you might think! Plus it's fun.
Thank you for the cookies you brought us at one point, and for teaching me how to open up in discussions.

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Great teacher expects the best out of her students
The lab she taught was fun because she encouraged us to participate. In doing so, it helped me understand the course better and made me think harder about the material we covered.
She's fun and she encourages everyone to share their ideas.
Billie was an awesome GA, she was always available through e-mail to answer questions and always gave thorough responses. She was always ready with Ideas and put a lot of work into grading papers.
Great instructor who encouraged me to really push my writing skills to the next level.
nice and very helpful when it came to understand the material.
A great TA
Billy was accessible and accommodating. She was able to spark discussion effectively while keeping things interesting in section. She knew the content well and when I needed help she was there.
Great! I enjoyed the Lab sessions, as it provided some extra content and review for the lecture portion, which can never seem to quite get in all of the information in its short amount of time.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The discussions
I liked the free write after every movie we watched because it helped me brainstorm.
The movies.
I liked writing the small assignments on Laulima and the screening reports.
Discussions each Friday to further understand weekly topics.
I liked how the GA used great examples by showing youtube clips or scenes from movies to help me understand the material. It made it much more easier to understand.
I enjoyed the discussions and watching movie trailers
I liked the group discussions and the activity where we would go around the room and talk about the movie that week.
The subject of each week, and the writing assistance, which was very helpful.
learning about films
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The papers
There was nothing negative about this course.
Discussions.
The critical essays.
Nothing
The readings were unlikeable.
Nothing.
the only grievance I had with the course was the time was too early for my taste, but that was a personal inadequacy.
On no part of the instructor, I disliked class discussions simply because of the lack of volunteers to speak. It felt like most discussions were being ripped out of students.
