19. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The office tour and press release writing.
This was a great PR class! Wish there were more. Great teacher!
When Amy would put what we learned into a real world situation and how PR either handled it correctly or incorrectly and the steps involved.
Having speakers come in
I really liked that there were guest speakers that came in. It gave us an opportunity to see what the professionals do and what they expect from workers.
Bringing in Guest Speakers from the fields to let us know what it is all about.
I liked the lectures and outside guest speakers.
The knowledge the professor presented. The press releases and real life experiences we had as assignments were so beneficial. The tests were even great reviews for what we actually need to know when we get out into the work force.
She explained PR based on her experiences in the field. She did not just teach from the book but also from her experiences. She also explained how to handle yourself professionally.
Quest lectures
I think that everything was very valuable, I guess it was certain topics that wasn't as valuable as some.
The opportunity to learn from person like professor Hennessey who has many experiences in the front lines of this field is really precious to students. UH should hire person like professor Hennessey.
Everything. As the only Public Relations class available during the fall/spring semester, I wanted to take the advantage of learning as much as possible. As Amy-zing as she is, she gets every PR professional in different divisions, agencies, departments as guest speakers to give us much greater insight in their position as well as her own.
The information
I believe that connecting the lessons from the book to life experience through guest speakers was a very valuable aspect of this course.
That we were learning of things we will actually use and things that will help us in the real world of PR. The guest speakers gave to the class. We were able to see so many perspectives of people in the Communications field.
the teacher we learned so much from her
The one aspect that I really cherished was the guest speakers that Amy was able to procure for the class. Having these professionals come and talk to us about their PR related careers was very much appreciated. At first, I was bit cloudy to what expect if I was going into the communication field of PR, and now that I have undergone the teachings of these professionals I feel more competent in what I will be facing in the near future. It was very nice to see that Amy knew the guest speakers on a personal level, and I like that this type of relationship existed between the teacher and the guests because it gave off more a happy vibe.
News Release
I like how we learned how to write News Releases and the guest speakers provided interesting real life experiences.
visual examples through videos and real-life cases; guest speakers
The guest speakers and the power points
The guest speakers
guest speakers as well as professors own personal experience in the field allowed me to be understand the career.
A lot of the Powerpoint presentations and guest speakers were very valuable.
Amy was an APR professional with many years of service in the in PR field. It was so valuable to have her teach us her skills and knowledge. Most professors are strictly just professors, but Amy worked full time at her PR job, so we knew things first hand from someone who actually worked in the field!
The guest speakers sharing their experiences in the real world.
The importance of improving your writing skills. Knowing the legal and ethical aspects of public relations and how they can improve in informing the public.
The Guest Speakers were very useful!
very nice and helpful and fun
The out of classroom group office visit and the speaker sessions.
the teacher's experience, the guest speakers,a dn even the textbook material were amazingly accurate! i really have felt that i learned alot!

24. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
I would enjoy mainland or international guest speakers.
Nothing. Great teacher!
Go over AP stylebook. The importance was stressed in the class but I didn't understand how to use where to look things up important area I needed to focus on etc. If we took the time in class to discuss what was in tehre instead of just flipping through pages I think I would have a better knowledge as to how to use it.
Have more writing assignments.
No complaints about the class. it was very helpful for this major.
None.
This professor needs to teach more classes. She is so knowledgeable and helpful. Get rid of the teachers who don't have the passion or experience, and hire this woman! She's amazing at her job in the PR world and incredible at teaching. She knows her information and can explain so many different concepts to us. There aren't many professors like Ms. Hennessey, especially in the COM department, don't ever lose her. She loves what she does and it's so obvious when she gives us lectures. She's a powerhouse in the PR field and in the classroom. She knows her stuff and actually knows how to explain it well.
NONE
provide writing assignment, more guest lectures, more office visit, offer graphic design
none
More hands-on or class activities.
I have no idea because this course is great enough.
In addition to the groups presentation and press releases. You should give more assignments that deal with the concepts on each chapter. Say for example planning. Have us develop our own strategic plan for an event given to us. give us a scenario of an event, the objective, etc. and have us come up with the plan. For crisis communication give us a scenario and how we would react toward that situation, etc. etc.
Make the exams a little easier
Ms. Hennessey's teaching style and methods where great! The only suggestion I would make is one more group activity in addition to the first one we did about the ethic scenarios.
none
nothing
I have no suggestion for any improvement for Amy. She did an excellent job at teaching.
I would really like News Release work shop days where we go over the corrections in class.
activities that students can engage and participate in to enhance learning material instead of just lecture such as jeopardy!
Maybe spend more time on the writing/new releases because I don't really feel I learned how to do them correctly/we didn't go over it in detail enough
Go over entire study guide one class, then follow up with any unanswered questions in the following class.
Hennessey's teaching style gives me reason to come to class. I love her enthusiasm in every lecture.
None
I really enjoyed doing the news releases, as well as "real life" projects such as our office visit. We also did an activity earlier in the semester where we thrown a situation, and were asked in groups to figure out how we would conduct the situation in a "appropriate PR manner" as we have learned in class. Real life things that actually pertain to a possible career were fun, and I wish we had more time to do them, giving that there was a lot of content material to learn.
Ms. Hennessey was a great professor and provided an interesting viewpoint of public relations.
Hands on group activities that force participation and group work.
SHE IS WONDERFUL AND THIS CLASS WAS THE BEST IVE TAKEN O_O in terms of experience, and learning, and relating classroom materials to real life, it was really accurate!

Guest speakers, presentations, lectures.

Really learning about the field with guest speakers
The readings.
The exams, press releases, presentations of guest speakers, and powerpoints.
How she would tell us about her experiences and also the guest lecturers.
Public Affairs reading and the guest speaker lecture about public afffairs

I enjoyed the guest speakers because it allowed for us to see professionals in their line of work and it allowed us to semi network ourselves.
Proffessor's personality is great!
I liked all of it. I enjoyed all of it.
The information
As mentioned earlier, I liked the appearances that guest speakers made though out the semester, it was great to have someone in the industry come talk to us.
I actually enjoyed lectures. The material was so interesting and Amy puts it in such an interesting way.

guest speakers
Guest speakers were really helpful because we learned a lot about what types of careers are available out there in the real world. Writing Press Releases were also very helpful because it helped to improve my writing skills.
I enjoyed our PR office visit tour, it allowed us to view first hand the life of PR professionals. The project itself wasn't challenging, the goal was just to view and see any consistencies/inconsistencies of what we learned in class versus what the visit presented. I also enjoyed our guest speakers! Some of them were hard to focus in on while speaking, but we had a ton of them ranging from: litigation comm, health care, etc. It was valuable to hear their stories of how they got to where they were and the different places they worked at. I've never had this opportunity to hear real life stories and advice in any class in Comm until now!
Guest speakers.
The guest speakers and group project allowed us to expand what we are learning to what public relations is about. The lectures was informative.
The guest speakers
The speaker sessions, as well as the extra credit opportunities.

The only aspect that I didn't like about the class was that the meeting time was later on in the day.

40. Comment on the physical environment of the classroom (space, noise, lighting, seating, etc.)
Nice class but need more outlets.
Seating was crowded but we all fit!
Physical environment was fine, sometimes it was too cold though
Seemed a little clique-ish. Wish there were more opportunities for people to get to know each other in class.
totally fine. should be bigger to allow more students to sign up.
good space and good learning classroom.
Everything was good.
Everything was spot on, the class sucked! Too many immature, uninterested classmates.
Classroom could have been bigger for 30+ students
perfect
Possibly need more seating/space
I liked this room!
It's was a bit small. Crowded even. It's hard not to disturb anyone if leaving/entering a room.
Good
The classroom environment was good. The seating was different from the traditional chair connected to the desk kind of deal. I liked the soft chairs it made learning better because I sat comfortably.
A lot of the chairs had issues. They were creaky, missing arm rests, and the backs of the chairs rocked.
good
The physical environment was adequate enough to learn material.
I didn't like when the classroom got loud at times, but they calmed down after a while.
comfortable
It was fine but always very cold
Comfortable.
just right
Our physical environment was a comfortable and good one to learn in.
BUS AD building was a great environment, and our class' personalities meshed well with each other.
There were outside noises that could be distracting while in the classroom since it was right near the small cafe.
Perfect, comfortable, and spacious. Chairs are partially broken.
Not enough seating, comfortable classroom.
super fun! noisy and crowded in the most awesome of ways. i made a lot of friends im enjoying school. im really going to regret it when it is done.

Wish there were more PR courses.

I would recommend Professor Hennessey to others.
This was a challenging, yet interesting class. I've learned so much and was able to ask the teacher about job related matters, that is hard to find. She helped us understand about getting jobs in the PR field, what to expect, and how to survive once we get a job. That is near impossible to find a professor who cares that much and is as passionate about their work.
Great class!
Nothing
I think we should do more hands on activities like the press releases and actually have a class to discuss great ways of doing news releases, I mean the lectures are very informative, but im a very handson person I learn by doing rather than listening and taking notes.
Thank you for everything. If you were not this course's proffessor, I can understood nothing.
I can not explain how knowing Amy Hennessey, having her as a contact, an instructor and as an advisor has been so, rewarding? Beneficial? All this time knowing her, she has become an inspiration, a role model to me in becoming the PR Professional that I aspire to be.
Keep up the good work Ms. Hennessey! :)
I'm so happy I had the opportunity to take this course. I found it the most valuable of any of the other courses I have taken at Manoa.
I would suggest this course to any classmates in Communications major
Amy Hennessey should be teaching!!! She is a very good teacher that makes the courses fun and stimulating.

Thank you Amy! I really hope she could possibly teach another course relating to Public Relations, I would definitely enroll in it, and I know I would learn so many more new things.
Ms. Hennessey is very knowledgeable in the PR relations and she made the class interesting. I'm not considering going into Public Relations but if a student wants to go into it they should definitely take her course. She did a good job.
Really likable and enjoyable class. I just wish this class had other options for time, 4:30 is really late for me with work and family.

19. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Your class has actually been my favorite this semester. What I like most is that we talked about real issues in PR and developed stronger communication skills through our class discussions.
the writing assignments and guest speakers
I thought that the group project for the office visit assignment was imperative to our career choices. It's a good way to get students in the environment and to see an office of a PR firm or magazine agency upclose. To get the feel if that's where we want to be or not.
Bringing in guests to help explain and not just learning from a book gave me better insight.
Having speakers in the field come in and talk to us.
Writing press releases
Learning concepts that happen in the real world; observing different case studies because they're like an illustration of the text especially when I'm confused on what exactly the book is trying to say.
press releases and her experience stories in the field, guest speakers
I enjoyed the guest speakers a lot. It helped give perspective to the PR field. I also enjoyed gaining experience in writing press/news releases, give good experience.
everything
Professor Hennessey's attitude when teaching the material. She was always positive, even when she was clearly tired. The positive attitude was very uplifting, especially in a class situated late in the day. This course seemed geared towards learning about aspects of the public relations professional life. Having guest speakers come in to talk about their experiences within the field was very helpful because I realized the pros and cons of such a career field.
Creating a news release
Writing Press Release was difficult and yet most valuable.
having the power points posted on laulima
Guest Speakers, Office Visit assignment
Guest speakers
I liked that she assigned press releases for the class to write.
I thought the guest speakers and the press release papers were most valuable.
Lectures and readings and guest speakers.
The internship opportunities were nice.
We can learn many PR techniques. It will be helpful in the future and career.
Doing the news articles.
I found the lectures to be very straight forward and helpful in understanding concepts in our textbook.
Learning about different organizations in Hawaii. Hearing the inspirational stories from different people in the industry and learning of their success.
The news release assignments taught me a little bit more how to organize and focus news or press releases for future assignments in the real world.
20. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
The annoying student athletes sitting in the back being a constant distraction!!!
the group project - not the office visit assignment itself but the fact that it was a group assignment
I'm so enthusiastic about this type of work, so I liked it all.
I thought meeting with our professional for our interview gave me little knowledge that I already didn't know. It was a lot of time and effort put into trying to reach out to get an interview and little was taken out of it.
Everything is valuable
The long lectures, I think the course would benefit for more interactive, hands on work for small groups or the class. Keeps everyone engaged and interested in harder topics, and to remember them for future exams.
The noisy classmates.
Office Visit Presentation could be changed in some parts. Also, there are some questions on the EXAM that seemed not necessary to learn through this course.
power points could have been better
Test
The press relesses were difficult to write because it never got taught in class
Nothing was really invaluable. Everything she covered is basically things that we as hopeful PR professionals need to know.
I thought the information load was a bit heavy which wasn't as valuable.

Learning the histories about PR.
She knows everthing but sometimes it is really hard to understand and cannot get it.
None.
Mmmm the whole class was pretty valuable.

Certain guest speakers, I felt weren't effective in informing us about their profession or what they did. Sometimes went off-topic - but not necessarily off-tangent. This overpriced $150 textbook!

24. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
Nothing...she was Awesome!!
It was hard when the lectures were prefaced with "this isn't interesting" or "you don't use this in the real world" or when they were accompanied by a fake enthusiasm. Maybe have 4 exams with less information on them and organize the study guides a little better (either by chapter or lecture date).
I think that including more videos into the presentations, like towards the middle/end of the semester was interactive. It got the class laughing and talking amongst each other, about it and how we felt about it. It's good so that we can discuss about real life situations
Overall i like it jus the way it is.
More writing, more mention or assignments in social media
Possibly implementing more ways to be interactive for more long or 'boring' portions of the textbook so that students stay engaged and retain the information for the exams.
I suggest that when professionals come to speak, that they say how much they LIKE about their job instead of what they dont like. It was kind of depressing
Tying in the material to real-life examples makes the content relatable.
Questions about the guest speakers on the Exam should be asked in some different way.
more group work or activities, I felt like all of the classes were just lectures. there was a lot of good information in the lectures it just would have been nice to not always have the same routine.
Place emphasis on writing. Most valuable skill. Help students develop a portfolio.
Have a class on press releases
Maybe assign more press releases so that we have more opportunities to improve our writing abilities.
I think if there was more extra credit opportunities or more ways that we could see professionals in action through events or field trips would've been cool.
N/A
Make the class more stimulating somehow. This class was very boring. Lectures don't interest students.
Put more materials in power point and Study guide. Make simple question for exams such as matching.
None.
I would have actually like to have done more news releases. I feel like i need more practice. That's it.

38. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Teachers was well educated and enthusiastic when it came to reaching the course objectives.
the guest speakers and Amy's stories from when she was starting out in the field.
I liked the guest speakers because they shared their own experiences that presented ethical issues as well as legal and how they handled crisis management.

Tips on what to prepare for in the "real world"
I loved learning about PR in general, I want to go into the field so it was great to learn more especially the history of PR. I think relating more real world aspect to the course would be great, maybe in class activities.
The guest speakers because I got an inside look into the life of a PR professional.

Writing Press Releases
Guest speakers
Group project
I really liked how the guest speakers she chose were extremely relevant with chapters we were going through.
I liked the guest speakers and doing press releases because she gave good informational feedback.
Everything was great.
We can learn what is PR and many techiniques for our career goal.
Having guest speakers talk about a subject we are currently learning.
Guest speakers and examples of the concepts (Michael Phelps LOL)
I really enjoyed the guest speakers.
Guest speakers. Allowed students to meet professionals from the profession and connect and learn from them.
39. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Loud athletes...
the exams how long it took to get assignments / grades back
The tests, I liked. But, I'm not the best test taker, I understand everything, but feeling like i HAVE to know it all at one time makes my brain feel exhausted. If i had to jus talk about it in a different setting, it would be more of a representation of my knowledge.
Tests are never fun.
The corner of guys talking..
Memorizing a lot of organizations
getting into depth with the technical terms. It's understandable when explained but labeling each action under a specific term can get a little confusing.
I liked everything!
The group project. I think instructors need to be aware that most of the time, the amount of work amongst the group is unequally shared. Though I understand that group projects relate to the field of Communications, there should also be some way to ensure group evaluation of individual performances.
Office Visit Presentation
Tests
Exams n press releases
I wish there were more writing assignments.
I disliked the tests the most.

The exams (who likes those anyway)

Powerpoints and lectures. But it's part of learning, gotta deal with it.
40. Comment on the physical environment of the classroom (space, noise, lighting, seating, etc.)
Everything was great. I do however wish there was some way to shut up the disruptive students.
it was a small class and this amplified the side conversations.
Well, it's a classroom. Haha. Chairs were honestly, kind of uncomfortable. I think if the chairs were like the chairs in the business building, that'd be fun.
I thought it was a good environment which allowed people to talk, respond and ask questions if needed. It was fun and easy going which is needed in a class at the end of the day.
Kinda tight on seating
Great atmosphere.
The classroom wasn't crowded with people, but instead desks. there are way to many desks in our class that get pushed around and cause clutter and distraction.
Dealing with loud classmates took away from the overall educational experience. Other than this, the classroom environment was not an issue.
too many students
Some people are very noisy, annoying, immature, and disrespectful. They should be deducted some points from their grade.
Too small, poor seating
Very noisy n crowded at times
I thought the physical environment was good, i wish there was more room for group discussions however.
N/A
Good environment, sometimes people are talking during class time but it is not noisy.
The seats in the classroom are disorganized when I come in to class.
For the most part the class stimulated a learning environment aside from the few times the boys (you know who)got rowdy and distracting.
Good but we had annoying people in class who didn't know when to shut up.

42. Other comments:
I learned more than any if my classes and enjoyed it...A rating.
Amy is so sweet and super knowledgeable about PR but hasn't quite mastered teaching yet. I could tell she was exhausted most of the time in class from her other job and I felt bad for her. I think it would be helpful if she had a TA to help grade exams and do other things like that for her. I'm sure there are students who would love to intern with her and work with her in that capacity if they were given the opportunity. This class helped me figure out I definitely do not want to go into PR.
Thank you for giving extra credit!
Keep up the positive attitude and good luck with Ulu Pono Initiative!
It was very difficult but also interesting course. Definitely I will recommend other friends to take this course.

This is a great class. There is a lot of information that is related to being a PR.
It's been a blast :)
Professor Hennessey is an awesome professor (the best) and anyone would be lucky to learn from her, especially because of the impact and the network that she can pull from. That inspires students like myself and makes me want to achieve that status some day.
