22. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She's very pro discussion to gain feedback and ensure understanding.
Professor Harvery would ask questions during every class to ensure we were keeping up with course content.
She always makes sure that everyone has plenty of time to complete assignments and is always willing to help out.
She provided study guides and many online resources for students so that we would be well prepared for class.
by giving them a lot of chances
She would consistently make sure that we are okay and that we understand what the work is about.
Rachel Harvey showed concern by teaching us methods on better studying habits and reaching out to us via email.
23. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
I like that she knows her subject so well, it leaves such room for learning.
She explained real life scenarios to help us understand course content so us, students were not just learning about a subject that was totally alien to us. Harvey also made us read articles and books to help us better understand the concepts.
I like how everything is planned out from the beginning and that she organizes activities in class to help engage us.
I especially liked how nice and upbeat she was. Her sense of humor and cheerfulness at 8:30 in the morning helped make the class energy very positive.
online tests bc you can take it on your own time
I like how her work is always interesting. She adds personal experiences and videos to relate to them.
Rachel is a very good teacher who knows what she is doing and knows how to teach, it can just seem a little over whelming at times. I enjoyed her class though ,and I would love to take another course she offers in he future.
Rachel Harvey taught this class by having us working in groups which really helped. Also, I really liked working on our SLO review worksheets in class. She really wants us to learn the concept and I loved how we did morning exercises for the first 2 min. of class.
24. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
she's awesome.
Overall a awesome teacher. If I were going into the field of anthropology I would love to have her has a mentor.
She is really nice and funny, she seems to care about her students and how they do in her class.
She's a good teacher.
awesome
Her class is not only interesting but we learn a lot from her and there should be no reason no one doesn't understand her work. She also works fairly amongst everyone and gives everyone a chance to pass
Excellent Professor and she definitely knows her material.
25. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
Yes. She's hard but it's not hard to succeed.
Yes I would recommend her. She teaches using techniques that allows the students to see that she is a professional within the field and she is very knowledgeable.
Yes, most definitely.
I would recommend her for other students because she's a good teacher, straightforward, and nice.
yes great teacher
Yes, because of her teaching skills and she's a lot easier to understand because of her experiences and she breaks it down for us if needed.
yes, she is a knowledgeable teacher and you WILL walk out of her class at the end of the semester knowing something you didn't have any clue about when you first entered her class.
YES

22. How did the instructor show concern for students?
I believe that she did.
She genuinely cares about us. When the semester first started, she was understanding about the issues going on in my life.
She will constantly check on us with our progress on items that we had to complete. She will ask us if we had and questions and if we understood everything.
She always encourages us to talk to her if we need anything.
Without saying so, she indicated that she was aware of the challenges outside her classroom by being flexible with deadlines without inviting abuse. She would push, but only so much, such that the students can still develop their "muscles" on their own.
Rachel Harvey shows concern for her students by allowing us to ask questions and explaining concepts clearly. She opens up her office so students can stop by if they have any questions. She also allows students to email her essays before submitting them so they know if they are on the right track.
She gives a period of grace for turning in the SE's which is nice because I work a lot. She also opens everything up so you can work ahead if you have upcoming obligations.
Rachel Harvey has shown concern for her students back extending the due dates for assignments that were due on turnitin.com. She also shows concern by helping us establish class discussion even though majority of the class is not well prepared and did not read the course material ahead of time. She also offers a lot of opportunity for extra credit and reminds us that she is there to help.
She takes time to answer questions and provide feedback.
She made time outside of class for any student who needed help with the assignments or needed a clearer understanding of what we needed to do.
23. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
This was my first WI course so I don't really have anything to compare it to but what I liked best is the way she managed to spread out all the assignments. She put enough space in between each of the assignments so you wouldn't feel over whelmed.
I liked that all the tests were online and every paper and extra credit assignment could be turned in online.
She teaches things in a way that makes it easier for young people to understand. She uses examples that I can clearly relate with instead of using examples straight out of a textbook.
The way she explains things in detail to help us understand the material.
I liked that she is well qualified and shows a lot of experience in anthropology.
Her power point presentations were very helpful, and she used them effectively to initiate discussions. She would vary her normal speaking voice for emphasis, not by speaking louder, but by whispering. This was effective most of the time. Occasionally I would miss what she said because it was too soft. The examples she chose were of the world-wide variety, very interesting, occasionally drawing a blank because of unfamiliarity, maybe from a different milieu. It is interesting that she never says if you are right or wrong. She would either nod or shake her head uncertainly, as if she has not decided if you are completely right or completely wrong. I guess this indicates that you may be on the right track but you need to work harder.
I enjoyed that the tests are online because I am more comfortable taking tests at home. I also like the way she was very organized with her syllabus and she is very clear with what needs to be done in the class to get a good grade. Mrs. Harvey grades papers fairly and gives feedback on what we need to do to make our papers better, and she also allows us to re turn in papers so students are able to get the best grade possible along with allowing students to create a paper that is to their best ability.
I liked how Harvey showed us how certain concepts that were taught are still being used today through power points and video clips. This really helps me since I am more of a visual learner. Although, I disliked how at certain times I felt that the class agenda was unorganized since she tried to cram a lot in one class session. I also felt that the amount of required literature to read was way too much, I would often get confused about which was more important to read the chapter in the text, the article assigned or the chapter book based on our current concepts.
I like that she used relevant content within her course. I also like the reading she assigned.
Some areas of the course were very difficult to understand and grasp. The concepts were sometimes unclear and we often got lost in the lectures.
I thought she showed great videos that went a long with the course and the things we were learning. The videos gave us ideas and better understanding of the work and concepts we were learning behind the field of anthropologist. Also I liked how she engaged all of us students into groups during class to learn some of the things we were going over.
24. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Originally at the beginning of the semester I didn't care much for er but as the semester went on. I grew to like not just her but the class, the information that was being taught and SOME of the assignments we did.
She is overall a great teacher, and cares about the community. She is always offering extra credit for attending fairs and helping out with community service.
Great teacher! Very fair!
She seems casual enough so you can be at ease, yet the serious "dr. harvey" that stays unseen,is strongly felt. Her smile seems sincere, yet not totally happy, as if to say that things could be better, things should be better, and we should be doing more in that direction. Yet she would push only so far, and let you decide which way to fall, which side to choose.
Rachel Harvey is a very good teacher! She is very passionate about what she does and what she teaches and I enjoy that! Mrs. Harvey was in one of my Hawaiian Studies classes and I can tell she is very interested in learning more about people and she enjoys Anthropology. I feel like I learned a lot in her class, and I enjoyed showing up to class every day.
The syllabus had ALOT of things on it but it's not a hard class. Everything you need to know for the test and SEs are discussed in class.
I like how she is passionate about the subject but maybe reorganize and minimize the course agenda.
Not much, Thanks for teaching me some things about Anthropology and what the field work consists of. I wasn't really aware of this fieldwork at the beginning until learning about it and it was quite interesting.
25. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
I would recommend her class to other students.
Yes
Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes. She makes anthropology fun, not easy (its still hard), but she actually makes you want to try.
YES! She is always available if we need help. Questions, even those asked through email, are answered in a very timely manner.
Yes, because anthropology is very interesting and she explains things well and is organized.
She would be a good teacher for those who have formed good reading habits with analytic comprehension. A strong interest in human nature is a plus factor. I would not recommend her class to those who prefer to watch a film for entertainment versus read a book for information. If you will not actively participate in class activities and homework, then you are in the wrong place. Know yourself, and be prepared to defend your stand, but be open to other points of view, as there always are in any human interaction. And have the humility to accept other possibilities. Otherwise you may take offense. Or you may miss the point altogether, and decide that the class is boring.
Yes I would recommend Rachel Harvey to other students because she is an awesome teacher. She cares about her students and she teaches her class very well. She is always well organized and well prepared. I wish I could take another class with Mrs. Harvey if she taught another class I needed to graduate. Usually I feel like I have to put in an extreme amout of effort to get a good grade in a class, but I feel like in Mrs. Harvey's Anthropology 200 WI class, if you do all of your work and show up to class, you will get a good grade.
Yes, it's a writing intensive class so there is a lot of work to be done but it is not difficult if you keep up with assignments.
I would. It is a fun class that opens you up to many different cultures and ideas.
Yeah I would. She's a great teacher, she seems to know her subject well and I learned a lot from this class so yeah I would.
26. Other comments:
Dr. Harvey, thank you for clearly presenting the vital concepts. I feel that I missed out on the chance to apply them to many past situations. If I had taken your course sooner in my student life, I would now be an even better person. But that is what tomorrow is for: another opportunity.
Rachel Harvey is an awesome teacher and I really enjoyed taking her class this semester!

She emailed me sources I could use for my paper! She knows my topic and is interested in my essay.

By reminding us that she was always available for help out side of class, as well as being lenient on a grade/turn in if the student needed more time or if something came up.
She showed concern by making sure her point is understood by giving activities and relating them to everyday life situations.
She lets me have extra time on my test when needed.
She asks clarifying questions, let's everyone know what her office hours are and brings extra handouts everyday. She also provided a lot of extra credit opportunities.
23. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
She is a primary source! Which is great
I like the documentaries she showed and links she provided. The books and articles she shared were very information and interesting.
she didn't explain the assignments very well
I liked the anecdotes and references to the times she (or her husband) actually went out on anthropological expeditions and how it related to the subject, especially when talking about the necessary state of mind when doing that type of work. I also liked when she'd comment about all the comic sans in the powerpoints- we were all thinking it (a way to keep the class interesting and not so bogged down by a potentially info heavy subject). The guest speakers were also a great way to have multiple perspectives about different fields of anthropology.
I liked how she showed different clips and interviews that pertained to the subject. I also liked how she has so much knowledge and experience in her area, so she knows exactly what she's talking about and has actually been to these places that we are studying.
her sense of humor and ability to build rapport with her students.
I really liked that she tried to keep the class interesting by varying how she taught the material. She brought in props and guest speakers, took us on a field trip to the imaginarium, showed us video clips and shared personal stories with us. This made the class much more interesting than other lecture classes I've taken.
24. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
She is very approachable and friendly.
Very enthusiastic about the subject, it helps that she's experienced and can offer a perspective on papers/articles which might be otherwise biased.
Rachel is probably one of the best professors that I've ever had. She's funny, pretty, and smart! What a great combination. I'm planning on taking another one of her classes next semester.
She is a fantastic teacher and i highly suggest her.
She has a lot of experience in her field, so I feel this allows her to provide supplemental information.
25. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
Yes. The class is highly interesting
Yes! She is a great teacher, easy to learn from and is willing to provide help if you are interested.
Yes, if this is a field they are interested in. Again, the personal experience helps with the class because it can relate real world experience to what's in the text book, a way of grounding it and making it not seem so text bookish.
I would DEFINITELY recommend her to everyone. I was not even the slightest bit interested in this class but after I took this course, I'm very interested in archaeology and anthropology.
yes, she makes a boring subject interesting.
Yes, I would definitely recommend her.

did alot of class activities
she very approachable, and friendly.Class was one of my favorites.
I liked that she tried to use material that we could relate to and would include You Tube videos in order to teach us certain material. I also liked that she gave us a lot of extra credit opportunities.
Yes
I liked that Rachael has showed many videos in our class. I understand Anthropology more clearly. At first, entering this class, I thought I'd drop it because it was seemed complex to follow up too. But as I continued I understood something new. It was great because I learned so many different cultures and what happens in their lifestyles.
Take home test
I liked her excitement for her subject.

22. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Dr. Harvey made the subject of anthropology interesting. She was always available to help with writing synthesis essays, and was very helpful when I was writing and doing research for my mini ethnography. I would highly recommend her writing intensive class, and I am grateful for all that I learned from her. I loved her sense of humor.
She always reminds students of office hours.
She is understanding and lenient with students when it came to health issues and other things. She seemed to really help a lot.
She would reminds you over and over and email and put everything on Laulima to make sure you got it and that you are abreast on everything!! She cares that you get your work in and on time. She cares that you are understanding the chapters and reading material. She explains it thoroughly. She communicates and keep you informed well through emails and Laulima.
Always opened her office hours. Made sure that students knew we could stay after class or come in
Listen to them
She would always ask us whats going on because a lot of us would put off work.
23. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
Nothing to dislike. See above for likes.
There is nothing I disliked about the way Mrs. Harvey taught.
The many slides and videos are very interesting. She has a lot of learning materials and fun techniques to make the class even more interesting. The only thing that I dislike is that we had a lot of work to do, HOWEVER, she gives you plenty time to do it in, especially if you keep up with the syllabus. The work is very informative and you learn so much from all the reading materials, slides and videos.
She wasn't so boring about it. She would try to make it entertaining.
Lessons were fun
I liked how she teaches us, she is always excited about the chapter and kept me interested.
24. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
I enjoyed knowing her and felt she really cared about me and the other students.
She is an overall very good teacher, and explained her material very well in class.
Ms. Harvey really "knows her stuff" when it comes to Anthropology. She is soft spoken yet hard-driven when it comes to Anthropology! It shows how much she loves the subject. She is kind and concern that you make an appointment with her if you need anything and to see your progress. She is always there willing to help and guide you. I learned so much in her class, things that I can apply to life now and things that when I am ready to apply, I know that it is there because I learned it in Anthropology. One example is the death of Mandela when they did a documentary. I knew exactly what they talked about pertaining the their way of living in Africa and I learn so much more about their culture.
Good teacher. Well prepared daily
Awesome job
I enjoyed her class and wished she taught another course at WCC.
25. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
Yes. If a student wants to learn about anthropology and how to write a proper paper on that or any other subject then this is the class to take. Her guidelines are strict, but this is college, not high school, and I expected no less.
Yes.
Yes I would, because I learned from her class and enjoyed it.
If you are ready to work hard, do lots of reading and truly interested in Anthropology, then Ms. Harvey is the professor for you! Thank You Ms. Harvey, God Bless
Yes, She is a good teacher, You can definetley tell she knows what she's talking about
Yes, shes a great teacher
Yes because she is a good instructor that is passionate about her work.

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The new perspectives gained on tourism.
All the readings.
The knowledge that the professor has of the subject, and ability to translate the information into a interactive and stimulating way
The final project upon which we had to learn the concept throughout the course. Therefore the course did a 360, and brought everything back together.
The content of the course material was incredibly valuable, I took this class for shits and giggles thinking it would give me a new perspective on the hordes of tourists that visit our lil island but I found that it really gave me a new perspective on..life. As corny as that sounds. If I found it offered in person in the fall, I would take it again.
The powerpoints where you talked and explained. I like the visual as well as a voice to kind of explain things instead of mostly reading.
I enjoyed the readings and the blogs were a way to collect all of your thoughts on the readings in one short essay.
The sections on Hawai'i.
It was very organized and interesting
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
none.
The amount of readings.
the blogs
I just realized I went the entire six weeks without one of the required texts...the one by Bruner, I am not sure how I managed that, it came in the mail from amazon really late and I never noticed, so maybe...that. Idk I can't come up with a good thing to put honestly.
all of the aspects were valuble but I think finding links to related material doesn't work as well because I think students don't really have the time to review them. I think if you were to keep that aspect of the blogs make it as an option in the discussions.
I felt that a lot of the concepts were not new to me. Each anthropology class I have taken has touched on all of these topics already.
There were way too many assignments for a summer course! To have us do a final ethnographic research paper in addition to blog posts and discussion questions and watch modules is way too much. It should have either been just an ethnographic research project or all of the busy work. It was very difficult to stay afloat in this class especially with all my other classes and life happening. Also, the research project should just be a paper. To have to do a powerpoint presentation is, again, too much busy work. We can just as affectively get our findings across to you through a paper.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
no possible way.
Making it clear what we need to do each week.
test "study guide". Like more or less, specific materials prescribed to review for the tests. Like assignment essays, that would prep the student on what the tests would be on [i suppose this is what the weekly discussions do] 1/2hr more time on the test.
dont have blogs
teach in person :D
Maybe make it more interesting by going above and beyond what is normally taught in regards to tourism.
Even though it was clearly told that there was a substantial amount of reading, and i thought i knew what i was getting into, it was still ALOT. I think if i had taken this for a full semester, it would have been more beneficial. I felt like i was rushing through the readings, even though i really liked them more than i was expecting.
There needs to be a few things dropped from this class. There are way too many assignments and expectations.
Have in person help. It's difficult to do stuff like the presentation without additional help.

22. How did the instructor show concern for students?
Harvey is an excellent teacher. She clearly goes out of her way to prepare lessons and help her students with anything.
She made a lot of resources accessible to help us study
Yes, she would always remind us that she is there to help us and that we are welcomed to her office for help or even to chat if we needed.
Always gave them opportunities to do better
She showed concern for me personally by working with me on my busy work schedule and allowed me to work around certain work due dates because she understood how important my job was to me and my family.
23. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
I liked how prepared Harvey was for her lessons. Everything was carefully planned out, to the minute. She offered up tons of resources and extra credit opportunities. There is not really an excuse for failing her class.
taking test on the weekend with laulima, only because I work every weekend.
I liked how before a test she would a a review session, but she would make it in a fun and enjoyable way by doing Jeopardy! She would also teach us a lesson and always show us a video so we can also get a better understanding what she is talking about.
Always gave us opportunities to do better and I liked her way of lecturing for some reason...haha
I especially liked how she used a game show called jeopardy to help me and the entire class to study for upcoming exams.
24. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
I really enjoyed Harvey's lectures. She has a very down-to-earth vibe, and her quirky yet knowledgeable character makes her class interesting and fun.
Rachel has a good sense of humor which carries over in her teaching
Thank-You so much for such an enjoyable semester!! :)
She was very understanding. I can always appreciate that in a teacher, as well as a person!
Professor Harvey is a great mentor and role model that really helped me exceed this semester in her course.
25. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?
Yeah, good teacher. Fun class. She is very nice and has a sense of humor.

22. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She responds to emails very quickly and answers any questions as best as she can. She also encourages us to see her after class if we have any additional questions.
Harvey shows concern for her students when they are having trouble in their work. She would also have a little meeting with her students to know what is going on with the student.
She answers our questions clearly and emails back right away
She had good office hours for students. She would be asking what we were working on and tried to get us to turn assignments in.
made anthropology easier to understand which is not easy. kept us up to date with what is due and gave adequate amount of time. was always available after class.
Told the class her office hours and even has it on laulima.
Shes very current with her e-mail.
By making herself available outside of class to help.
Very good teacher
Very well and determined.
23. What did you especially like/dislike about the way the instructor taught this course?
Class was a little bit boring. Going over powerpoints, that can be reviewed at home on Laulima. I regret not taking her online course.
I liked that Harvey would use powerpoints and have a group discussion to teach the course.
I loved how much she loved her work, I wish that sometimes she would explain to us what she thoroughly knowns. e.g. When she discusses waste and trash, she is very knowledgeable about it, I wish she would have spent more time discussing these topics that are current and relevant to our current times here in Hawaii.
used present days social issues as examples.
I liked how she was organized and taught with passion. I just wished she would involve the students with one another. For example, if she split us up into groups instead of her teaching. I felt like I didn't really know the students in the class.
-- snipped --
I like her enthusiasm and interest in the subject.
Like learning about different culture
Well anthropoid isn't my favorite subject so it wasn't very interesting.

24. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
She is very nice and fair.
Harvey is a nice teacher. She would also tell stories when she was studying her course.
Dr. Harvey is very knowledgeable professor. She knows her subject very well and can communicate it.
She's a cool teacher.
Overall you're a really cool professor. I'll probably take another one of your classes.
Good job Rachel
Overall she was a very great teacher.
25. Would you recommend this instructor to other students? Why or why not?

No other comments.
I had a hard time trying to read all the different material, I would like to say less is more, in the sense that we read a lot and it is a lot of information to cover, I would have enjoyed if we could have a print off of the power point slides so we could make notes as we would go through the slide show in class covering the topics. she already stated that she will cover more current material in her course next semester, that is wonderful. I love how applicable anthropology is to our daily interactions. Also, RPFs became annoying, they were more of a deterrent to read. I would prefer a pop quiz on the chapter at the start of class or a reading check on laulima where we get a 5 question quiz that is give to us to fulfill by midnight on sunday. Also, I know she was following Pam's rubric, but I felt that she was trying to do two things at once, doing what she wanted and then trying to follow what Pam had written out. Overall, great course to be a part of! I loved it and I learned about cultures and how beneficial they are to be included when making business decisions.
