I loved this course, the lectures were entertaining and helpful.
communication techniques and coping mechanisms when dealing with stress
The lecture material was full of information. The material was over and beyond what the book could have provided for me and was also a point of clarity when the book was confusing. Also, going back and making corrections on my papers helped a lot. I had many common mistakes in my papers that I would often make so it helped me realize how often I misuse grammar.

Nothing
more detailed notes on power point lecture slides
I had a hard time with the tests, and maybe try a podcast so students will be able to look back on lectures. Lectures are very detailed, and sometimes it is hard to write down all of the information.
Sometimes he gets a little carried away and talks fast (not so much fast, but spitting out a LOT of important information and it gets difficult to keep up)

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The material that we learned was very useful and interesting for future conflicts.
Everything. I found the whole course to be really interesting especially since I was able to actually apple what I learned in my daily life. The way he used examples of his own life and related it to where it was easier for us to understand was really awesome.
When he using his personal experiences as examples
everything
Personal examples from his own experiences
Very good professor. His teaching style is very easy to learn and understand. Keeps me interested doing class and also take the time to know his students. Really good public speaker and lecture.
being able to use what i learned in my own relationships
almost everything
I appreciated the reviews before the opportunities. It showed that Dr. Sharkey wants his students to do well and prepares them effectively.
it helped me to deal with conflicts
Learning about anger management.
Conflict behaviors and tactics that I consistently see myself and my conflict partners engaging in.
Learning the different aspects of conflict and how I can better manage the conflicts that I experience.
All the materials in this class can be related to our actual life both inside and outside of school. It is very nice.
Prof. Sharkey seemed very knowledgeable about the course material.
Providing personal examples and journals for us to connect with and see within our own lives.
Dr. Sharkey uses personal examples and relates the material to our own personal lives. This not only helps me understand the subject matter better, but also allows me to use what I learn in the classroom and apply to my everyday life situations. By writing about our own personal encounters with conflicts, I am able to use the concepts to improve my management skills to better my relationships.
EVERYTHING!!! This course was SUPER awesome and I am truly grateful I took this course. The information that I obtained throughout the semester has helped me in present conflicts and I know that going into social work, the knowledge I have gained will definitely help me. It has also helped me resolve past issues that was never resolved and it has given me greater sense of how problems occur. I am more aware and conscious as to how approach conflict and how to deescalate it.
Learning different ways that people deal with conflict
The skills section
Dr. Sharkey did an excellent job when it came to explaining the course content. He used lots and lots of examples to make it easier for his students to understand.
The personal stories that attached to the lecture made the concepts easy to understand
All of the theories and concepts we learned along with the examples Dr. Sharkey gave us, made our class a valuable skills based lesson.
everything
all the material was very applicable to real world situations
EVERYTHING! This class has helped shape me into a better person. I feel like i have gained tools in this class that i will use for the rest of my life! This class should be a requirement!
This is hard to say because individual elements of the course, by themselves, don't make sense. The value of the course was the integration of all the theories and concepts into a theme that could be internalized...applying them practically to our lives.
The journal entries were valuable because they got me to apply what we were learning to my own life.
I thought everything that was covered throughout this course was valuable and I will efinitely apply the knowledge that I have learned.
The most valuable aspects of the course to me were the examples that Dr. Sharkey provided to the class when he explained certain concepts/theories. By giving these examples, it helped me view him as a more credible source on the subject matter.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Too many things were based off of tests and papers. It would've been more useful to work through actual live examples and be graded on that rather than stuff we just memorized.
N/A
The online notes. They should be more extensive.
n/a
The powerpoints were too vague. I don't necessarily think everything should be written down but they were presented in too much of a broad outline form
None.
nothing

Don't know
N/A
None.
Sometimes Prof. Sharkey would go too fast so his students would be confused about the material being covered. It would be good if he made sure time to time that everyone was on the same page.
I didn't really feel that there were any aspects that were least valuable. Everything that I learned in this class could be applicable and used during my conflicts.
I like everything. Though something that I does need improvement on was class engagement. He should include class activities so that everyone is more engaged. I get a greater grasp of the subject and topics.
Having to hear the same set of stories Sharkey uses during the entire semester. If I have to hear about "squeezing the tooth paste from the bottom" one more time i might go insane.
Theories for Understanding conflict
There were no least valuable aspects.
I have yet to find an aspect of this course that was not needed
Nothing. Everything was important! Dr. Sharkey would teach us a theory/concept, and his personal examples or videos would help create an idea of how we'd apply it to our conflict situations.
none
not being able to access the power-points from class on laulima.
I don't think multiple choice tests are the way to go for a course like this. There are many definitions that I will not explicitly remember 6 months from now, so why test them specifically? It was nice that the questions were wrapped in application scenarios, but it was still testing Vocab a lot. The scores on the 2nd test may have been lower, but I think essays are better mode assessment given the course topic.
None
The least valuable aspect of the course were the surveys. They played a small role in the subject and kind of lost its place as soon as we finished discussing about it.

16. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
More grading by showing that we learned rather than just being tested on it or writing about it.
I think he should have less opportunities aka test I think he should of had us actually use the material more in our own life and maybe came up with a project of some sort. I really didn't like how our grade was just based on the opportunities and the journals and there wasn't other ways to get points.
Better powerpoints
repeat things more, have definitions on the powerpoint along when speaking
Switch up the lecture style more. Make powerpoints more interesting.
Maybe have more questions on the exams
not much to improve upon
multiple choice-only exams
My only suggestion would be to do more class discussion versus lectures.
Talk a little more about conflict management with coworkers, talking about how to come to a resolution in a conflict.
I don't believe I can make any suggestions that would improve this course beyond its current exceptional standing.
The power points can get a bit confusing and the professor isn't always clear. For instance, we would learn five different things but it would not be clear that all of these things fall under a certain category. It would be more helpful if concepts and all of the factors within that concept were better labeled in the power points and if the professor clarified this better during lectures.
I am a very visual thinker and I also learn well by doing, not just by lecture, so maybe incorporating more interactive activities may help me learn the material better.
As mentioned earlier, I just would like for him to engage the class more by utilizing group activities and maybe perhaps class projects.
come up with more examples for lecture. You claim conflict is everywhere but you sound like a broken record with your go to stories.
Less redundancy during lectures
He's doing a great job with how he's teaching this course.
I dont always like how the sides are set up
Make sure he keeps hydrated so he does not feel dizzy!
none
I honestly can't think of one thing he should improve, this class was well planned out.
The course is set up to be a typical lecture style course. However, the content makes it perfect for doing a lot more collaborative learning and discussion based approaches. I think just about everyone in the class had several moments where they thought, "That sounds just like me and my relationship!! I never realized!!" Giving students the chance to discuss concepts with each other (in a highly facilitated and structured manner), would better allow them to take ownership of the knowledge and deepen their understanding of the material. Lecture is still an important part, but it could be intermixed with some more collaborative learning methods every so often.
Dr. William Sharkey was one of the best instructor's I have thus far
The participation of the class slowly died after two exams. He should continue to call on people at least three times in every class.

I really enjoyed this course but I just think he should provide his students with more ways of gaining points because his opportunities where really difficult at some points and for those who don't do good we didn't have other ways of making up points. His teachings where really great but I felt he went a little to fast and it was really hard to just process what I learned in the previous class because we would just keep moving on and on. Besides that he's an awesome teacher and I love his examples.
one of the best courses i have ever taken. can lead to a happier life
Thank you for always being available to talk. :)
Great class.
PROFESSOR SHARKEY IS THE BEST!!! RECOMMEND THIS COURSE TO EVERYONE BECAUSE IT HELPED ME IN MY CONFLICTS =)
Really enjoyed this course.
This course is the one class at UH Manoa that has changed my life and truly given me skills I will continue to use through out my entire life.
great class
The readings felt more supplementary rather than something that was assigned to the class as 'mandatory' readings.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Learning how to handle conflicting opinions and manage disagreements with people.
Indepth aspects of conflicts.
Dr Sharkey's lectures and use of examples to explain lectures.
What we learn in class all ties to what we do in our daily lives. Very interactive class.
the journals were really valuable
The powerpoint slides were a valuable tool for note taking.
He taught more about how to think of situations in a sense that made it possible to then turn a situation full of emotion to a situation that can be resolved.
everything i learned could be applied to my everyday situations
Learning different ways to deal with conflict from both sides. Also recognizing real conflict and distinguishing the different types and cycles of conflict. I think this whole coarse is important because we deal with conflict everyday.
Although it may seem obvious, being taught to "slow down" during conflict has a whole new meaning for me now. Mostly, because of the concepts of HOW to slow down and what "tools" to use to prevent conflict escalation. Also, just as obvious, learning the dynamics of how perspective really does drive behavior in communication. Learning your own skills approach is imperative in doing your part as an effective communicator.
all aspects
I really liked when Sharkey used real life experiences to explain concepts. It really helped me to understand, especially when I could relate to the example. Also, the self-analysis, journal entries, and final paper really helped to tie the class together and let us take a look at how the information in this class can help us.
I thought the section on competant conflict managment was the most valuable. In that section you learn how to turn conflicts into productive conflicts. It was easy to apply to your own life and it was interesting section because there was a lot of self thought and self reflection when covering the material.
Sharkey is the man, great communicator and speaker
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Too much content for one semester

His journal entries. I did feel that he gave enough feedback on the journals to help up see if were improving in our own personal conflicts. I would have liked him to have made that part of the course more individualized, so that we could incorporate the new tools learned in the course with actual real life conflicts.
He used a lot of videos that made sense, but could have maybe used a few more current references.
I think everything is valuable because you can apply it to your life.
I am not sure how to follow the class. I would read the material beforehand but sometimes we weren't on time w/the lecture being given for the next class. Just felt off kilter w/the lecture and readings coinciding.
none
I can't think of anything.
I thought the sections on thoeries, styles, and tactics were all mashed together too much that made it hard to learn the individual material. Not to get it confused with that the material wasnt valuable, just how it was taught it was.

16. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Test questions were not worded in a way that you could understand what was being asked. Very vague and had multiple answers for each question.
More detailed writing on power points for important definitions.
it was good the way it is
His test questions can be a little less vague and unclear. He uses alot of scenario questions for his testing, but during his lectures he is mostly quoting definitions. If he were to incorporate more definition questions then ask the student to give and example...I think we could learn more that way. The essay questions were also tricky...If you did not quote the definitions word for word per say...he would dock points. I think he should be a little more flexible and understanding allowing the wording to be in the students voice...not a quote from his lecture.
He could make the examples a little more up-to-date, for example using a clip from family guy or any of NBC's thursday sitcoms that people will feel more strongly about because they are more familiar with them. However I do like the ones he uses, just maybe it could be better if he did things that were more current to our situation. He could also post more detailed notes on his lectures online.
I think it might be me, but I found myself lost throughout most lectures. I tried to catch up as I typed in the information he'd be explaining into the powerpoint slides. For example, the outline format is great. But during transition, some information he gave didn't indicate a segue into the next point. So sometimes I wasn't sure if he moved onto the next topic or if he was still giving an example for the prior point being made.
its great already
I can't think of anything. He was very effective and interesting.
If he could seperate the sections he taught more, maybe by teaching less but expanding more on the remaining subjects. It is mainly to allow more time to distinguish between the different theories and the differences between them.
keep on keeping on
