8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Seeing videos of real-life applications of the concepts we were learning was extremely interesting and really put abstract concepts into concrete examples.
His example are phenomenal and he makes thing relatable. I love that he allowed rewrites a- it helped me understand my writing and become a better student.
history of interrogation in the U.S. global perspective on interrogation and interviewing
Learning the difference between interviewing and interrogating. Also learning more about laws and how they are not always clear. It makes me rethink situations.
I appreciate Dr. Sharkey's lecture style - it is direct, easy to follow and clear in indicating what information is important. Dr. Sharkey is a highly appreciated and valued teacher. Dr. Sharkey is a rough grader, however, his commentary on writing assignments and opportunity to argue exam responses provide resources for students to really invest in their own education. Dr. Sharkey also presented all the resources and materials necessary for students to do well; his exams were not tricky or unreasonably difficult.
The position papers really made me think about the material (such as ethics and ethical decisions) in a way which made me understand the material better.
What was valuable of this course was learning different interrogation methods such as the Reid method, and peace method. Also, being able to see how they are used in society today.
As a writing intensive, his methods of revising are extremely helpful for future writing.
Learning about different types of questions and which ones are the most effective.
-Lectures with subsequent reading and PowerPoints -Revisions on essays
9. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
When the papers were returned, some of the feedback was not useful. For example, if the same mistake was repeated throughout the paper (such as a rule of writing the writer simply didn't know about), pointing it out once and writing "There are many instances of this error in this paper, please review (whatever section) and apply it to your revision" would be less abrasive than making a note of it every time and marking it with the section number/letter over and over and over. I get that you're making a point and really hammering it home, but it was frustrating trying to find your other suggestions for improvement once I had corrected all the instances of the first error because my page was all full up of the same one or two things.
Sometimes the multiple choice questions on tests can be confusing, but he allows the students to challenge the answer

Was not too interested in how interrogation is used in military but more so criminal situations,

17. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Technical difficulties happen, and can hardly be held against the professor, but as a student, I have seen it happen time after time across almost all of the classes I've ever taken. I don't know if you would have any access to the classroom outside of your scheduled class period, but if you did, a little pretesting of the equipment would go a long way. Again, I know how difficult A/V equipment can be for any or no reason, and I know teachers are insanely busy even when they're not teaching, but I just thought I'd suggest it.
I think his course is great as it is- you can tell he is an experienced and passionate teacher

he should slow down, I know its a lot of material to get through but he often went through slides way too fast. Also post the slides online with ALL the points you present in class, especially because of his speed through them.
I don't think anything needs to be improved.

Love all his classes
Thank you Dr. Sharkey, this course was so much fun! I can't wait to use what I've learned in a professional environment.
Even though interrogation is not a field I want to be working in in the future this course taught me a lot of interesting things for life. I found the books and readings very interesting.

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The conflict journals , and exam reviews
The aspects that were valuable were relating my life to the actual course. It was cool to take knowledge that I learned in class and use it to better my life.
The different forms of conflict and methods to avoid it.
I think this whole course was beneficial because we deal with conflict all the time and we need to learn to management.
Self-reflection, use of real-life examples
I was able to apply the content in this class to real-life applications.
I feel like learning how to deal with conflict was most valuable to myself and relationships.
none
Knowing the different conflict theories and how to handle conflict.
The journals of our own experiences and personal examples to explain material were the most beneficial/valuable aspects of this class
Personal examples provided by Dr. Sharkey really helped me understand the material presented in class.
-Conflict resolution techniques that allow for application into daily life -Real life examples made the concepts applicable
Too many to say. This class was eye-opening and could really be applicable in real-life situations.
I learned things that can apply directly to my life in everyday situations.
Everything! I didn't know that there was so much to conflict management. It was very interesting to see what creates conflict and how behaviors can be created, even when reciprocated. I loved learning in this class. I also loved his examples because they were easy to understand because they actually happened.
Dissolving conflicts
Application of concepts into his own life examples.
Everything especially the tactics to avoid and use in a conflict
Forgiveness!!!!
Learning about conflict behaviors of others and in different relationships
Everything
journals
The various concepts and theories were very valuable because I was able to identify them in myself and use my knowledge to improve behaviors and habits in my own life.
Learning how to handle certain conflict situations under different circumstances.

Everything was valuable and good information to know.
More information on slides would have been really helpful. Not all information, just a few bullets to help recall information later when studying. Sometimes the stories would wander and we would end up on a tangent which makes it hard to remember which information is to be focused on
None!
-Conflict journals: I felt that I was looking at different aspects of my behavior, but these were not the issues that I wanted to primarily focused on. I also felt that I was not able to "read" or interpret other's behaviors.

He can use more videos
Review sessions for tests, add textbook
I am not sure because I think the structure of the class is good already. Also, I like how he lectures using many personal examples. His transparency helps build trust with his students and also makes the content and material more relatable.
I feel that William Sharkey has taken all of the consideration to improve his class. It is a great course.
none
Have more visuals. For instance, more videos showing what each type of conflict looks like.
Less tangents and simply verbal lectures - The forgiveness portion of class was the most interesting as there were other materials used. It seems as thought he may be a bit set in his ways (i.e. Not adding more info to slides). Also, a lighter color background on slides would be helpful.
Provide more information on the powerpoints.
Nothing. William Sharkey is an excellent teacher and I was honored to be in this class this semester. His teaching was wonderful.
He is a great teacher and very knowledgeable but he really needs to talk about the assignments a lot more thoroughly in class. There would be times in which an assignment would be due and I would have no idea because he never brought it up during class.

I love that assignments are titled opportunities :)
Nothing at this time. I would definitely recommend Dr. Sharkey's courses to other students.
Some information presented was unclear, or not presented in the most easy to follow manner, but expectations were very clear for the course and Dr. Sharkey has much knowledge and enthusiasm for this subject.
William Sharkey was a great teacher. When asked a question, he really tried to help all students and was very knowledgeable about the content of his class. This was just a wonderful class and I really enjoyed both the class and his teaching.
I loved taking this class. It was so interesting and I wish I could take an extended course. This class made me consider being a counselor or interning with one.
One of my favorite professors this semester
Overall a great course that teaches you a lot for life

Possibly have more student-to-student interviews
He does a great job of teaching the course. He is very knowledgeable on each topic and keeps us interested.
-- snipped --
It would have been nice to have spend less time practicing and more time going over lectures which held alot of important information. In other words finding more of a balance between implementing structure of interview and going over important information.
I think that Dr. Sharkey can improve on his power point slides. There is a lot of good info but just too much for one slide. I don't like how his slides aren't very appealing.
I loved Dr.Sharkey's class, because he is a great professor and he knows how to teach the content of the class so that the students understand. So I don't think there is anything that can be improved.

I like the interviews and being able to apply what we learned in class.
I enjoyed the hands on practice that we had with the interview which helped us gain a better understanding of how interviews are done.
The interviews are a little nerve wrecking because there in front of the class but I do think that the 3 interviews that we did were a great skill for all of us to have.
I liked learning about the different types of interviews in order to be prepared for the future.
23. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Opportunies.
I didn't like having to interview in front of the class.
All the writing

That these were concerns that I needed to address my family.
Examples and videos
learning things about my own family that I didn't even know.
I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Sharkey is a very knowledgeable professor and shows a high level of dedication to the topics discussed. I appreciated real life examples which helped me relate topic to real-world scenarios. This made it easier for me to understand as well. Dr. Sharkey, provided ample time for student participation.
The lectures were very informative and interesting. They related directly to reading prescribed by professor Sharkey but helped us grasp the concept further. He used many examples and always made an effort to help us understand on a higher level than just a definition
I really enjoyed this class and the teaching style. I would strongly recommend to any student to take this class.
The way that Dr. Sharkey was so opened with us about his only family matters made me more interested in the class and more willing to engage in the lessons.
All of them
the lectures were super interesting and informative
I found the lectures about couples very valuable, I learned and used some skills I learned through the lectures in my arguments.
Rules and roles, stress, and conflict.
The topic is very interesting and can be applied to my family dealing with communication
Using what we learned and applying it to our everyday livse
I find family communication in general to be the most important aspect that I got out of this class.
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I found value in almost everything except the Jeopardy review games.
None
calling a test an opportunity. its a test
I honestly enjoyed it all. Everything was there only to help us understand and succeed. Nothing was done just to make work.
I wouldn't say any of the material was not valuable, if you go into this class with no interest in the subject then it might all seem that way, but it was a great family communication class

Allow some time for students to jot down notes.
There isn't much to say except there is no need for improvement, it was an excellent course.
I think Sharkey did a fabulous job at teaching and used all the appropriate readings and other materials
Nothing. He's great!
I prefer a more lecture approach on review days rather than "jeopardy"
At times, examples were a bit lengthy.
Improve powerpoints
Try to make things clearer and not just say that social science concepts often overlap and have grey areas.

I appreciate dr. Sharkey's professionalism and concern for students. He really showed that he cares about what he's teaching and helps make it directly relatable to my life, which at the same time made it more difficult to take objective tests. But I think being able to apply the concepts to my life were much more valuable, even though my grade may not reflect it.
Some of the content on the slide were a little lacking in information. I had to jot down notes fairly quickly and missed some aspects of topic. Overall this was a very useful and fun class, and I enjoyed it. Thank you Dr. Sharkey.
Thank you for a great semester.

The interactions with the professor as the helpee.
Learning to be open to different cultures in the helping relationship was helpful because I have many people of different cultures in my life. Also, learning how to ask appropriate questions I found very valuable.
Practicum
Practicums
finding out new ways to talk to people and get information from them in order to help with their problem.
we really got into detail about the class and all the information was given clearly and on time
The most valuable were practicum, exercise assignments and analysis papers.
The discussion were very good, and I appreciated the way Dr. Sharkey graded our papers.
The practicum diads and the class discussions.
There were small practicums that we were assigned to which I found to be the most helpful. The course itself was highly interactive, allowing for a very hands-on approach with the material. What we were doing in our groups reflected very well with what we were learning in lecture.
Dr. Sharkey is extremely knowledgable and helpful in class. Class activities help us with more realistic experiences.
11. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
Working charter, I totally forgot about it on the first exam.
I will probably remember this course most by the practicums we did in class. They were memorable because they are firsthand experience with helping people.
The counseling practice we did with our partners.
Working with others to practice the things that was said in class.
Professor Sharkey. he demonstrated a lot of knowledge about the course and made it easier to learn with the examples he would give
Writing Intense analysis papers, practicum and exercises assignments.
The elvevation in my writing skills due to the way Dr. Sharkey corrected papers.
The way it was taught and the practice activities.
Again, the practicums that we formed. It helped me to really understand what it is like to be in the helper's seat and have someone come to me with a problem situation as a professional.
All of the communication characteristics that are important as well as the fact that people have blind spots and we need to look past them sometimes to resolve situations.

20. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Dr. Sharkey truly wants us to succeed. He's willing to give you his time, if your willing to give effort.
Dr. Sharkey is always willing to help you if you are having a problem. He is understanding and willing.
The help we got on our papers
Explains things very well. Grades papers by actually providing great feedback on how to improve not only the paper itself, but also your writing.
being flexible and helpful
he is a very personable professor and he doesn't mind to help you when you are in need
William Sharkey's valuables are knowledge of communicology, problem-management skill and integrity.
His willing to assist the students who did not understand concepts.
Speaks very clearly and communicates very well.
Sharkey does a great job of relating the material to real life situations. He is a great conversationalist and is very fluid with his presentation of the course material. He creates a very open and engaging classroom environment that allows for people to reach out and practice their own skill sets.
He provides all the feedback possible for us on our papers for us to improve our writing. This was very helpful. He knows a lot about this topic and about writing and grammar. He is kind and understanding. He is funny and smart. He is an amazing professor and helper.
21. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
Nothing ...he's one of the best professors I've ever had.
The only thing I had trouble with was some of the exercises because I did not understand them fully. Maybe Dr. Sharkey could make groups in the beginning of the class so that they could call each other with questions.
Longer class, more practice
Longer session
Allow for more practicum time.

By sticking to one specific model of the helping relationship, it severely limits the interactions that we have in our practicums. At times in psychotherapy, a helper might use many different models/approaches with their helpee, and I do feel that Sharkey was a bit too strict on this model.
I honestly have no suggestions for Dr. Sharkey's style and methods. The only thing I would suggest is more discussion on other book topics in class. This summer class moves fast and the only thing that is hard to keep up on is the readings. If we discussed the book more in class then it would help refresh material that may be important or on the exam.

William Sharkey does amazing job as professor. I am quite impressed with his skills in the writing, communication and opportunity management. This course is the most interested and challenge than other courses since two years.
Great class! Will recommend course and instructor.
This is one of my favortie classes I have taken in college. Dr. William Sharkey is one of the best, if not the best, of professors I have had. It has literally been a joy of mine to attend this class with Dr. Sharkey each day this summer. I have learned a lot about the topic, myself, other people, and more. What I have learned is invaluable. Thank you for the great summer class.

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Applying an everyday concept, into my own life.
The fact that Sharkey relates everything to real life examples from his life. This makes the material easier to apply to my life because he gives all real life examples.
Learning how to approach my conflicts. I learned some really helpful techniques that apply to my personal life.
Our conflict journals were awesome! I discovered things that I hadn't seen before. I am better with handling conflicts now.
Videos, exams, and in class activities
The journals.
Lectures, jeopardy.
The conflict journals were helpful to relate the class concepts to my life. The lectures were always interesting and I felt like I learned a lot every day.
Very interesting class!!! I always felt engaged even though its a lecture class.
Learning about conflict was both extremely relevant and valuable to my life. Journal entries had given me the opportunity to shine a light in a previously dark place in my life. Ability to learn different conflict styles, and more importantly - ways to deal with them was invaluable.
Writing the conflict journals was most valuable because I learned more about myself and my current relationships.
The advice on how to approach certain conflicts. The concepts on why conflicts happen and the research to back up the concepts.
It was very relate able, He used real world examples, helped us to better understand the theories
Conflict is part of our daily lives, therefore the concepts that we learn in class can easily be applied to our own conflicts.
Stories of real-life examples.
The theories we discussed and the styles to use to bet deal with everyday conflicts
The content.
Every single lecture and video was most valuable. Gained a lot of knowledge that I can apply in my everyday conflicts
I love how he makes his work apart of his life. Because he always gives examples from explaining stories from his life.
listening skills
This course was valuable in that, not only did it expand my knowledge and understanding of how conflicts develop and progress, but it also gave me information that I could apply to my own life. I thought that the journals were helpful because it helped me evaluate my own conflict experiences.
Dr. Sharkey used a lot of examples in class that made the concepts clear and much easier to remember. The examples also helped me to apply the concepts, theories, and skills to my own experiences. The conflict journals and feedback Interesting readings The skills section of the course was most helpful to me, although I found all of the content interesting.

Maybe he can make kids more accountable because I really has a lot of great information to teach, but even I personally felt like it wasn't a big deal to miss class
Provide more activities
Make the powerpoints more interesting.
Focus less on material from the readings.
nothing!
I would not change this course.
The more real you can make it the better I learn. Slides almost every class is hard for me to pay attention. I like the stories. I like your voice projection. I like that you make your points clear and concise.
don't see any room for improvement, great professor
Nothing really.

Make it more interesting at times. But other then that he was good.
Incorporating the readings into class time throughout the semester might be helpful, even if it was just a quick review.
Perhaps consider adding more information on the in-class PowerPoint presentations (even if that version is not put on Laulima) Sometimes I have difficulty with taking notes just from listening to someone speak (especially definitions or instances where specific wording is important)

The only problem that I had with the class is that Sharkey went over some of the information too quickly. However, I did not ask for him to slow down. I believe that if I did, he would have probably been accommodating.
It was a very difficult class--I feel the questions asked were hard
Up to date content and new methods/techniques
Not so much note taking from slides, maybe more stories of real-life examples to help us understand material better.
Make it more engaging by having a more dynamic style of speaking.
It's good as it is.
Make it more relevant to Communicology and less about everything else. Why are you testing on the U.S. judicial system?
Don't go too fast! There was so much material and he was moving at such a fast pace! It is very hard to listen to him and take notes on what is on the powerpoint at the same time. Please teach at a slower pace..
Nothing
I do not have any recommendations for improvement. I feel this course was organized in a managable fashion and I liked how grades and points were distributed.
Post up powerpoints before lectures. He goes through the slides quickly which doesn't give us enough time to take notes.
i felt he did a great job and doesnt need any improvement
Better lecture slides
Add more hands on.activities for students.
Maybe to be more enthused about the topic. He seemed to be very serious all the time.
maybe make connections to communicology theories and research
letting us watch the videos with out him stopping it every few seconds so we know what is actually going on

I feel like the exams were not good exams because the questions could be argued to be a different answer. So it seems as if there is no straight one definite answer for the question, and it is based on the opinion of the teacher of what the answer should be...not what it actually is. The course material for the test itself does not seem confusing until actually taking it in a test. Too many hypotheticals.
Looking forward to Grad School :)

The lecture material was full of information. The material was over and beyond what the book could have provided for me and was also a point of clarity when the book was confusing. Also, going back and making corrections on my papers helped a lot. I had many common mistakes in my papers that I would often make so it helped me realize how often I misuse grammar.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Prof. Sharkey seemed very knowledgeable about the course material.
Learning about anger management.
All of the theories and concepts we learned along with the examples Dr. Sharkey gave us, made our class a valuable skills based lesson.
Dr. Sharkey uses personal examples and relates the material to our own personal lives. This not only helps me understand the subject matter better, but also allows me to use what I learn in the classroom and apply to my everyday life situations. By writing about our own personal encounters with conflicts, I am able to use the concepts to improve my management skills to better my relationships.
The material that we learned was very useful and interesting for future conflicts.
Learning the different aspects of conflict and how I can better manage the conflicts that I experience.
Personal examples from his own experiences
EVERYTHING! This class has helped shape me into a better person. I feel like i have gained tools in this class that i will use for the rest of my life! This class should be a requirement!
The journal entries were valuable because they got me to apply what we were learning to my own life.
Learning different ways that people deal with conflict
everything
The personal stories that attached to the lecture made the concepts easy to understand
Providing personal examples and journals for us to connect with and see within our own lives.
I appreciated the reviews before the opportunities. It showed that Dr. Sharkey wants his students to do well and prepares them effectively.
being able to use what i learned in my own relationships
all the material was very applicable to real world situations
EVERYTHING!!! This course was SUPER awesome and I am truly grateful I took this course. The information that I obtained throughout the semester has helped me in present conflicts and I know that going into social work, the knowledge I have gained will definitely help me. It has also helped me resolve past issues that was never resolved and it has given me greater sense of how problems occur. I am more aware and conscious as to how approach conflict and how to deescalate it.
Dr. Sharkey did an excellent job when it came to explaining the course content. He used lots and lots of examples to make it easier for his students to understand.
When he using his personal experiences as examples
The most valuable aspects of the course to me were the examples that Dr. Sharkey provided to the class when he explained certain concepts/theories. By giving these examples, it helped me view him as a more credible source on the subject matter.
This is hard to say because individual elements of the course, by themselves, don't make sense. The value of the course was the integration of all the theories and concepts into a theme that could be internalized...applying them practically to our lives.
almost everything
Conflict behaviors and tactics that I consistently see myself and my conflict partners engaging in.
it helped me to deal with conflicts
everything
Very good professor. His teaching style is very easy to learn and understand. Keeps me interested doing class and also take the time to know his students. Really good public speaker and lecture.
The skills section
Everything. I found the whole course to be really interesting especially since I was able to actually apple what I learned in my daily life. The way he used examples of his own life and related it to where it was easier for us to understand was really awesome.
All the materials in this class can be related to our actual life both inside and outside of school. It is very nice.
I thought everything that was covered throughout this course was valuable and I will efinitely apply the knowledge that I have learned.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Sometimes Prof. Sharkey would go too fast so his students would be confused about the material being covered. It would be good if he made sure time to time that everyone was on the same page.
Don't know
Nothing. Everything was important! Dr. Sharkey would teach us a theory/concept, and his personal examples or videos would help create an idea of how we'd apply it to our conflict situations.
I didn't really feel that there were any aspects that were least valuable. Everything that I learned in this class could be applicable and used during my conflicts.
Too many things were based off of tests and papers. It would've been more useful to work through actual live examples and be graded on that rather than stuff we just memorized.
The powerpoints were too vague. I don't necessarily think everything should be written down but they were presented in too much of a broad outline form
not being able to access the power-points from class on laulima.
Having to hear the same set of stories Sharkey uses during the entire semester. If I have to hear about "squeezing the tooth paste from the bottom" one more time i might go insane.

I have yet to find an aspect of this course that was not needed
n/a
nothing
I like everything. Though something that I does need improvement on was class engagement. He should include class activities so that everyone is more engaged. I get a greater grasp of the subject and topics.
There were no least valuable aspects.
The online notes. They should be more extensive.
The least valuable aspect of the course were the surveys. They played a small role in the subject and kind of lost its place as soon as we finished discussing about it.
I don't think multiple choice tests are the way to go for a course like this. There are many definitions that I will not explicitly remember 6 months from now, so why test them specifically? It was nice that the questions were wrapped in application scenarios, but it was still testing Vocab a lot. The scores on the 2nd test may have been lower, but I think essays are better mode assessment given the course topic.

16. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Talk a little more about conflict management with coworkers, talking about how to come to a resolution in a conflict.
Make sure he keeps hydrated so he does not feel dizzy!
I am a very visual thinker and I also learn well by doing, not just by lecture, so maybe incorporating more interactive activities may help me learn the material better.
More grading by showing that we learned rather than just being tested on it or writing about it.
The power points can get a bit confusing and the professor isn't always clear. For instance, we would learn five different things but it would not be clear that all of these things fall under a certain category. It would be more helpful if concepts and all of the factors within that concept were better labeled in the power points and if the professor clarified this better during lectures.
Switch up the lecture style more. Make powerpoints more interesting.
I honestly can't think of one thing he should improve, this class was well planned out.
come up with more examples for lecture. You claim conflict is everywhere but you sound like a broken record with your go to stories.
repeat things more, have definitions on the powerpoint along when speaking
I dont always like how the sides are set up
My only suggestion would be to do more class discussion versus lectures.
not much to improve upon
As mentioned earlier, I just would like for him to engage the class more by utilizing group activities and maybe perhaps class projects.
He's doing a great job with how he's teaching this course.
Better powerpoints
The participation of the class slowly died after two exams. He should continue to call on people at least three times in every class.
The course is set up to be a typical lecture style course. However, the content makes it perfect for doing a lot more collaborative learning and discussion based approaches. I think just about everyone in the class had several moments where they thought, "That sounds just like me and my relationship!! I never realized!!" Giving students the chance to discuss concepts with each other (in a highly facilitated and structured manner), would better allow them to take ownership of the knowledge and deepen their understanding of the material. Lecture is still an important part, but it could be intermixed with some more collaborative learning methods every so often.
multiple choice-only exams
I don't believe I can make any suggestions that would improve this course beyond its current exceptional standing.
none
Maybe have more questions on the exams
Less redundancy during lectures
I think he should have less opportunities aka test I think he should of had us actually use the material more in our own life and maybe came up with a project of some sort. I really didn't like how our grade was just based on the opportunities and the journals and there wasn't other ways to get points.

Great class.
This course is the one class at UH Manoa that has changed my life and truly given me skills I will continue to use through out my entire life.
Really enjoyed this course.
PROFESSOR SHARKEY IS THE BEST!!! RECOMMEND THIS COURSE TO EVERYONE BECAUSE IT HELPED ME IN MY CONFLICTS =)
The readings felt more supplementary rather than something that was assigned to the class as 'mandatory' readings.
one of the best courses i have ever taken. can lead to a happier life
Thank you for always being available to talk. :)
great class
I really enjoyed this course but I just think he should provide his students with more ways of gaining points because his opportunities where really difficult at some points and for those who don't do good we didn't have other ways of making up points. His teachings where really great but I felt he went a little to fast and it was really hard to just process what I learned in the previous class because we would just keep moving on and on. Besides that he's an awesome teacher and I love his examples.

discussions and helping relationship dyads
I thought it was important to ask appropriate questions, listen effectively and be empathic to another person. Learning these skills are valuable because we use these skills everyday with all relationships. It will help my relationships around me.
The helping relationship dyads that we formed to practically apply what we learned were really helpful. It gave us a chance to practice the skills we were learning, and to put into action the steps and processes we were learning about.
The lectures--Dr. Sharkey took the time to carefully explain each concept.

His strategies to become a better helper.
he knows a lot about what he teaches
Easily accessible for students if necessary.
his knowledge and enthusiasm to teach
He responded promptly to emails and had available time to meet outside.
I was very grateful for all of the time he spent looking at our rough drafts of our papers to make comments on all of the ways we can improve our papers. That was very valuable for me as I look to continue on to graduate school. I also liked how interactive he made the class, and he encouraged us to speak up in class (one of the ways I learn best.)
He's a really caring professor--I'm not afraid to ask him questions or for help.
His knowledge on the ssubject
He allowed students to take part in the helping relationship during class sessions. He advised students during the sessions, helped us move the session in the right direction. He gave examples of problem situations in his own life.
Knowledge and enthusiasm about the subject and course.
Detailed feedback for the practicum and extremely time consuming (for the instructor), yet easy to understand (for the student) method of reviewing papers.
19. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
To be less strict on the writing. Also to cut back on a few assignments. It's really hard to learn all the material when we have assignment after assignment constantly moving forward without understanding the current material.
easier exams
Essay corrections from book were slightly confusing.
clear expectations listed for the homework
It would be helpful to know what days we are participating in the dyads. (Like posting it on Laulima, if it wasnt already)
I would suggest having examples of each stage in front of the class before the dyads tried to do it.
None.

Ugh, hated having to look up the corrections for papers in the Rules for Writers book, especially since I bought the wrong one...my fault =(
Perhaps a little more time to work on the practicum. The last stage had extra time compared to the previous stages, but there weren't enough time in the early stages. Since the ground work in the relationship was a lacking, it was more difficult to utilize the extra time in the last stage of the practicum.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Sharkey is the man, great communicator and speaker
Indepth aspects of conflicts.
Although it may seem obvious, being taught to "slow down" during conflict has a whole new meaning for me now. Mostly, because of the concepts of HOW to slow down and what "tools" to use to prevent conflict escalation. Also, just as obvious, learning the dynamics of how perspective really does drive behavior in communication. Learning your own skills approach is imperative in doing your part as an effective communicator.
the journals were really valuable
I thought the section on competant conflict managment was the most valuable. In that section you learn how to turn conflicts into productive conflicts. It was easy to apply to your own life and it was interesting section because there was a lot of self thought and self reflection when covering the material.
What we learn in class all ties to what we do in our daily lives. Very interactive class.
He taught more about how to think of situations in a sense that made it possible to then turn a situation full of emotion to a situation that can be resolved.
I really liked when Sharkey used real life experiences to explain concepts. It really helped me to understand, especially when I could relate to the example. Also, the self-analysis, journal entries, and final paper really helped to tie the class together and let us take a look at how the information in this class can help us.
everything i learned could be applied to my everyday situations
Learning different ways to deal with conflict from both sides. Also recognizing real conflict and distinguishing the different types and cycles of conflict. I think this whole coarse is important because we deal with conflict everyday.
The powerpoint slides were a valuable tool for note taking.
Dr Sharkey's lectures and use of examples to explain lectures.
Learning how to handle conflicting opinions and manage disagreements with people.
all aspects
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
all the lectures.
None
I am not sure how to follow the class. I would read the material beforehand but sometimes we weren't on time w/the lecture being given for the next class. Just felt off kilter w/the lecture and readings coinciding.

I thought the sections on thoeries, styles, and tactics were all mashed together too much that made it hard to learn the individual material. Not to get it confused with that the material wasnt valuable, just how it was taught it was.
-none
He used a lot of videos that made sense, but could have maybe used a few more current references.
I can't think of anything.
I think everything is valuable because you can apply it to your life.
His journal entries. I did feel that he gave enough feedback on the journals to help up see if were improving in our own personal conflicts. I would have liked him to have made that part of the course more individualized, so that we could incorporate the new tools learned in the course with actual real life conflicts.

16. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
keep on keeping on
More detailed writing on power points for important definitions.
I think it might be me, but I found myself lost throughout most lectures. I tried to catch up as I typed in the information he'd be explaining into the powerpoint slides. For example, the outline format is great. But during transition, some information he gave didn't indicate a segue into the next point. So sometimes I wasn't sure if he moved onto the next topic or if he was still giving an example for the prior point being made.
it was good the way it is
If he could seperate the sections he taught more, maybe by teaching less but expanding more on the remaining subjects. It is mainly to allow more time to distinguish between the different theories and the differences between them.
He could make the examples a little more up-to-date, for example using a clip from family guy or any of NBC's thursday sitcoms that people will feel more strongly about because they are more familiar with them. However I do like the ones he uses, just maybe it could be better if he did things that were more current to our situation. He could also post more detailed notes on his lectures online.
I can't think of anything. He was very effective and interesting.
His test questions can be a little less vague and unclear. He uses alot of scenario questions for his testing, but during his lectures he is mostly quoting definitions. If he were to incorporate more definition questions then ask the student to give and example...I think we could learn more that way. The essay questions were also tricky...If you did not quote the definitions word for word per say...he would dock points. I think he should be a little more flexible and understanding allowing the wording to be in the students voice...not a quote from his lecture.
Test questions were not worded in a way that you could understand what was being asked. Very vague and had multiple answers for each question.
its great already

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Probing questions. How to get the appropriate and desired info out.
I thought that learning how to answer and create questions was the most valuable aspects learned.
The practicing of skills learned.
Being video taped and watching how we interact in a mock interview
I think that the employment interview was very useful, being that I am a senior. Also the probing interview was quite useful. Now I have the knowledge of an effective interviewer.
All aspects
Employment, Resume, Coverletter materials
The employment interviews.
i found the actual interviews very helpful. also being able to watch the video of the interview made me realized what things i need to improve on as well as some strenghts that i can utilize again in future interviews
The mock interviews.
Mock interviews and recording these mock interviews for self analysis
Learning the basics of asking questions and learning how to ask the questions appropriately and effectively.
Practicing interview techniques in front of class
9. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
Again, the probing questions
I would remember this course by remembering to properly ask closed or open questions.
Having to interview another classmate.
Making use of some of the feedbacks I was given during the two mock interviews.
How to perform during an interview and how to correctly interview another person.
Oh yes most definitely
The instructor's attitude
Again the employment interview. I don't think I will use the rest of the other interviews as much in my career.
the bipolar traps. hahaha no i will remember all the different skills and techniques that i can use when i interview for a job or maybe ill be a manager and have to interview potential employees or employees that are seeking promotions.
I'll probably remember how to correctly write a resume. Also how to as questions in an appropriate style to get a better answer from the interviewee. no more open to close switches and bipolar traps!!
How to frame a open ended questions that encourages a response
using the skills learned in this class for future reference.

23. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
The survey assigment was notvery helpful. I felt it was a complete waste of time.
The survey project was a little short on time. I feel like if the assignment was given out earlier in the semester it could have been used more in depth or actually have had some actual sit down interviews on the issues we had, as opposed to short handing out interviews.
Create an option that does not involve group projects. Allow students to pick their own groups.
More mock interviews and less lectures. Have a resume and cover letter workshop.
I think that the exam could be a little more clear. More extra credit or instead of 2 exams possible 3 to help with the points.
More clarification on the structure of how he wants the assignments done. More clarification on what is due and when it is due.
When watching video clips for examples, students should watch the entire clip first before pausing and analyzing each individual section. The survey interview could have clearer goals.
i think there should be more presentations. there should also be an assignment where the students pick out an interview off the internet and critique it and identify the different question types and faults.this will enable the students to get a better understanding of the different questions as well as common faults that interviewers make.
I think this course could be improved by having more in class activities in order for students to apply the material that is learned. Also there should be more explanation of what is expected in the mock interviews and group presentations. We were given handouts to help us prepare, but it would help if there was more class time to go over the handouts. Overall it was a good course and I know i will use what i learned to better myself in an interview whether as an interviewer or interviewee.
Typing out the entire transcript of interviews takes over 3 hours to complete for just 5 points. It turns out to be a waste of time since we only use is as a reference, when we can easily reference the DVD.
More interaction between students throughout the course for hands-on learning.
I feel like the work load is more comparable to a higher level class, it is a lot for 290 level. Otherwise its a good class.

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
journals
by far the course content itself has been instrumental in my dealing with conflicts. Absolutely valuable.
I think that all aspects of the course was valuable because they are all usable in real life.
Just the general information in the course itself was informative and valuable. You learn a lot in this course, especially about relationships including your own.
The most valuable aspect of the course was all of the real life examples that the professor offered. It helped to make the concepts easier to understand. The games we played the class before the midterms were also helpful to help us remember the material.
His teaching style! So relaxed yet incredibly insightful!
i thought that all the conflict management strategies was very valuable to implement into my everyday life. they have provided me with the skills to become a better commmunicator.
I felt that all aspects of the course were valuable. Before the course, I felt I was a rather good conflict partner, albeit with various challenges and problems in conflict engagement. Now, towards the end of the course, I better understand my role in conflicts and how my behaviors affect the other person's behaviors. I especially appreciated learning about the structure of conflicts. Learning about power and uncertainty stands out in my memory as very useful because I have immediately recognized the structural aspects in my conflicts. I also think the self-analysis, journals, and final analysis paper system is a great system to track my conflict patterns over a semester. As I prepared my final paper, I noticed more about my conflicts than I had written in my journals. I also liked the videos at the beginnings of lectures. It was useful to see a conflict and discuss as a class.
Everything!
Using what we learned in real life (journals).
Learning how to handle and deal with conflicts in a more effective and appropriate manner.
All the information given in course was applicable to everyday life and very valuable.
Learning about what causes conflict helped me to understand how to confront it correctly. Also, it taught me how to approach others and to be more understanding of what they may be going through before getting into a conflict with them.
The fact that he is such a good teacher really made the class great
Tactics to avoid while engaging in conflict. Understanding different conflict styles and how to approach these different styles.
Learning about how to engage in conflict and to look at conflict not as a negative thing but as something that might help certain relationships.
The quality of the professor's lectures.
theories and concepts.
Learning different tactics people use in conflict. I also felt that the conflict journals were very benifical.
The insights were extremely valuable.
Very useful information was learned in this course. The information I learned can be applied to every day situations. Really opened my eyes to things I never noticed before. Prof Sharkey had a lot of useful personal experiences as examples. Dr. Sharkey responds to emails very quicky!
Anger Management, Tactics to avoid in conflict.
the aspects that you could relate to your own life. the learning on how to handle conflict and realizing that conflict is really a good thing.
I think that every aspect of this course is valuable. Especially the reading materials.
The overall topic of this course was most valueable. I know and will use conflict strategies throughout my life.
I found the use of visual aids (dvds, video clips, etc.) quite useful in helping me understand theories and concepts. The instructor did a great job by including students in discussion because many different perspectives on various issues were provided.
9. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
There wasn't any aspects that were not valuable.
-
I felt that everything was valuable.
The smelly classroom which often smelled like urine.
I thought that there wasn't anything of little value.
I tried as much as possible to keep up with the readings, but I really can't handle reading on the computer. I would prefer buying a course reader or textbook, but I do understand that I can just as easily print out the readings. I believe learning about face and the various strategies of saving or giving face was useful, but I got a bit bored with that particular section. I can't explain exactly why, but that part of lectures and readings seemed very redundant and more tedious than it needed to be.
Can't think of any
None
I don't feeling anything was invaluable. There was a reason for each assignment that was given throughout the course, so I never got the feeling that I was doing something "just because."
Everything was good
Course Readings
On-line readings were a bit tedious at times.
The essay questions on the 2nd midterm. I thought I understood what was being asked, but I did not and my grade was alot lower because of the first short answer question.
The methods of assessment may not have been the best for as many concepts and readings as we were presented with. Too much straight lecturing.
I wish the study guides were more specific.
N/A
cannot think of any
There was nothing in this course that was unvaluable.
The final course paper.
You could consider finding more modern video clips of conflicts. It would be easier for students to relate to video content that they are familiar with.
10. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
journal entries
The tactics to avoid during conflict
I'll probably remember that I could relate everything I learned in class to real life.
the way I started to analyze my own relationships.
I will remember this course everytime I am in a conflict.
The urine smelling classroom.
most definately
Hopefully how much it inspired me to develop communication competence. I feel the three aspects of communication competence (knowledge, motivation, skills) were very clearly discussed and that I have the tools to be able to improve my conflict behaviors. I will remember: how helpful the journals were the toothpaste conflict how hard I've had to work since the first opportunity how rewarding my hard work has been it takes around seven seconds for a student/person to determine whether they have a question they'd like to ask.
applying the concepts I learned in class to my own personal experiences from doing conflict journals and the reflection paper of myself.
Being one of the most useful course I took because how it relates to real life.
The knowledge I gained, and how it has affected my real life relationships...positively.
The great presentations and making me realize more about myself.
The lessons and knowledge that i learned from the course
Tactics to avoid: allness statements, blaming, face threats
Learning how think before engaging in conflicts with certain individuals. Whether or not the relationship is worth engaging in the conflict and if I care enough about that particular person to try and resolve the conflict. I will also remember the tips and tools that I have gained from the class.
The professor
Professors dating and working experiences
The interesting stories Professor Sharkey gives. I really enjoyed how I could relate the material to real life.
How I deal with my own conflicts.
the videos shown in the beginning of class to show conflict situations.
the conflict journals we had to do, and how I became more competent in communication with my family.
the stories the teacher told which were amazing and knowing there are different styles of conflict and conflict resolution
Pretty much everything in this course I will take with me for the future.
Helping me realize how conflicts work, the meaning behind them, and how to properly solve them.
It's okay to engage in conflict. Focus on the conflict issue, your goal(s), and your partner's goal(s).

17. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I think that my instructor can improve on putting everything online. like the definitions of terms and the examples.
The class we spent guessing about the prof's personal characteristics was not an effective use of class time. The point that we all make assumptions and generalizations could be made very well in 15 minutes without so much detailed autobiographical data.
-
I would suggest including more information on the powerpoint slides.
He's already perfect!
i thought that the journals were really helpful so maybe more journals
I think this course is organized beautifully. I like that it's split according to the three components of competence. I found the Jeopardy review sessions not very helpful, mostly because I didn't have the time to study before the review sessions to really gain anything from them. I really can't think of anything I dislike or that would improve the teaching. Dr. Sharkey is PERFECT for this course.
include more videos to enhance lectures so that students can see how concepts apply in real life social interactions.
Not sure, perhaps do some class activities.
Perhaps have the conflict journal paper due a week sooner, that way we can focus more time on preparing for the final during the last week of instruction. Another good suggestion that was brought up in class, was have our most common conflict partner fill out a questionnaire in the beginning and end of the semester as well. That way we can see from the other person's perspective if there really was a change.
I'm not sure. he did a very good job. It was well organized and very interesting.
Nothing he is a great teacher
Don't over analyze, over discussion topics, you lose attention, move one. Perhaps, focus more time on rehearsing and implementing effective conflict mgmt skills.
Maybe to go more into the readings and make sure that we are understanding the material.
Less on-line readings
Use textbook in stead of reading materials.
He does not need to improve, great instructor!
More actual practice in dealing with confliscts; even "play-acting"
more specific study guides
cannot think of anything
No improvements needed
No room to improve, he did a terrific job.
