17. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Add more hands on.activities for students.
I do not have any recommendations for improvement. I feel this course was organized in a managable fashion and I liked how grades and points were distributed.
Better lecture slides
Up to date content and new methods/techniques
The only problem that I had with the class is that Sharkey went over some of the information too quickly. However, I did not ask for him to slow down. I believe that if I did, he would have probably been accommodating.
Not so much note taking from slides, maybe more stories of real-life examples to help us understand material better.
Maybe to be more enthused about the topic. He seemed to be very serious all the time.
maybe make connections to communicology theories and research
letting us watch the videos with out him stopping it every few seconds so we know what is actually going on
It's good as it is.
Make it more relevant to Communicology and less about everything else. Why are you testing on the U.S. judicial system?
It was a very difficult class--I feel the questions asked were hard
Make it more engaging by having a more dynamic style of speaking.
Don't go too fast! There was so much material and he was moving at such a fast pace! It is very hard to listen to him and take notes on what is on the powerpoint at the same time. Please teach at a slower pace..
Nothing
Post up powerpoints before lectures. He goes through the slides quickly which doesn't give us enough time to take notes.
i felt he did a great job and doesnt need any improvement

The exams were a bit hard. As well as essays.
fun and interesting course!
I feel like the exams were not good exams because the questions could be argued to be a different answer. So it seems as if there is no straight one definite answer for the question, and it is based on the opinion of the teacher of what the answer should be...not what it actually is. The course material for the test itself does not seem confusing until actually taking it in a test. Too many hypotheticals.

communication techniques and coping mechanisms when dealing with stress
The lecture material was full of information. The material was over and beyond what the book could have provided for me and was also a point of clarity when the book was confusing. Also, going back and making corrections on my papers helped a lot. I had many common mistakes in my papers that I would often make so it helped me realize how often I misuse grammar.

I had a hard time with the tests, and maybe try a podcast so students will be able to look back on lectures. Lectures are very detailed, and sometimes it is hard to write down all of the information.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
all the material was very applicable to real world situations
it helped me to deal with conflicts
Providing personal examples and journals for us to connect with and see within our own lives.
Dr. Sharkey did an excellent job when it came to explaining the course content. He used lots and lots of examples to make it easier for his students to understand.
The most valuable aspects of the course to me were the examples that Dr. Sharkey provided to the class when he explained certain concepts/theories. By giving these examples, it helped me view him as a more credible source on the subject matter.
I appreciated the reviews before the opportunities. It showed that Dr. Sharkey wants his students to do well and prepares them effectively.
EVERYTHING!!! This course was SUPER awesome and I am truly grateful I took this course. The information that I obtained throughout the semester has helped me in present conflicts and I know that going into social work, the knowledge I have gained will definitely help me. It has also helped me resolve past issues that was never resolved and it has given me greater sense of how problems occur. I am more aware and conscious as to how approach conflict and how to deescalate it.
Prof. Sharkey seemed very knowledgeable about the course material.
Conflict behaviors and tactics that I consistently see myself and my conflict partners engaging in.
Personal examples from his own experiences
everything
The skills section
Everything. I found the whole course to be really interesting especially since I was able to actually apple what I learned in my daily life. The way he used examples of his own life and related it to where it was easier for us to understand was really awesome.
This is hard to say because individual elements of the course, by themselves, don't make sense. The value of the course was the integration of all the theories and concepts into a theme that could be internalized...applying them practically to our lives.
All the materials in this class can be related to our actual life both inside and outside of school. It is very nice.
I thought everything that was covered throughout this course was valuable and I will efinitely apply the knowledge that I have learned.
almost everything
everything
All of the theories and concepts we learned along with the examples Dr. Sharkey gave us, made our class a valuable skills based lesson.
Very good professor. His teaching style is very easy to learn and understand. Keeps me interested doing class and also take the time to know his students. Really good public speaker and lecture.
The material that we learned was very useful and interesting for future conflicts.
Learning different ways that people deal with conflict
Learning the different aspects of conflict and how I can better manage the conflicts that I experience.
Learning about anger management.
EVERYTHING! This class has helped shape me into a better person. I feel like i have gained tools in this class that i will use for the rest of my life! This class should be a requirement!
Dr. Sharkey uses personal examples and relates the material to our own personal lives. This not only helps me understand the subject matter better, but also allows me to use what I learn in the classroom and apply to my everyday life situations. By writing about our own personal encounters with conflicts, I am able to use the concepts to improve my management skills to better my relationships.
The journal entries were valuable because they got me to apply what we were learning to my own life.
When he using his personal experiences as examples
The personal stories that attached to the lecture made the concepts easy to understand
being able to use what i learned in my own relationships
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
There were no least valuable aspects.
The least valuable aspect of the course were the surveys. They played a small role in the subject and kind of lost its place as soon as we finished discussing about it.

I like everything. Though something that I does need improvement on was class engagement. He should include class activities so that everyone is more engaged. I get a greater grasp of the subject and topics.
Sometimes Prof. Sharkey would go too fast so his students would be confused about the material being covered. It would be good if he made sure time to time that everyone was on the same page.

The powerpoints were too vague. I don't necessarily think everything should be written down but they were presented in too much of a broad outline form

Theories for Understanding conflict
N/A
I don't think multiple choice tests are the way to go for a course like this. There are many definitions that I will not explicitly remember 6 months from now, so why test them specifically? It was nice that the questions were wrapped in application scenarios, but it was still testing Vocab a lot. The scores on the 2nd test may have been lower, but I think essays are better mode assessment given the course topic.

Nothing. Everything was important! Dr. Sharkey would teach us a theory/concept, and his personal examples or videos would help create an idea of how we'd apply it to our conflict situations.
None.
Too many things were based off of tests and papers. It would've been more useful to work through actual live examples and be graded on that rather than stuff we just memorized.
Having to hear the same set of stories Sharkey uses during the entire semester. If I have to hear about "squeezing the tooth paste from the bottom" one more time i might go insane.
Don't know
not being able to access the power-points from class on laulima.
I didn't really feel that there were any aspects that were least valuable. Everything that I learned in this class could be applicable and used during my conflicts.
The online notes. They should be more extensive.
I have yet to find an aspect of this course that was not needed
nothing

16. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
He's doing a great job with how he's teaching this course.
The participation of the class slowly died after two exams. He should continue to call on people at least three times in every class.
My only suggestion would be to do more class discussion versus lectures.
As mentioned earlier, I just would like for him to engage the class more by utilizing group activities and maybe perhaps class projects.
I don't believe I can make any suggestions that would improve this course beyond its current exceptional standing.
Switch up the lecture style more. Make powerpoints more interesting.
none
Less redundancy during lectures
I think he should have less opportunities aka test I think he should of had us actually use the material more in our own life and maybe came up with a project of some sort. I really didn't like how our grade was just based on the opportunities and the journals and there wasn't other ways to get points.
The course is set up to be a typical lecture style course. However, the content makes it perfect for doing a lot more collaborative learning and discussion based approaches. I think just about everyone in the class had several moments where they thought, "That sounds just like me and my relationship!! I never realized!!" Giving students the chance to discuss concepts with each other (in a highly facilitated and structured manner), would better allow them to take ownership of the knowledge and deepen their understanding of the material. Lecture is still an important part, but it could be intermixed with some more collaborative learning methods every so often.
Dr. William Sharkey was one of the best instructor's I have thus far
multiple choice-only exams
repeat things more, have definitions on the powerpoint along when speaking
Make sure he keeps hydrated so he does not feel dizzy!
Maybe have more questions on the exams
More grading by showing that we learned rather than just being tested on it or writing about it.
come up with more examples for lecture. You claim conflict is everywhere but you sound like a broken record with your go to stories.
The power points can get a bit confusing and the professor isn't always clear. For instance, we would learn five different things but it would not be clear that all of these things fall under a certain category. It would be more helpful if concepts and all of the factors within that concept were better labeled in the power points and if the professor clarified this better during lectures.
Talk a little more about conflict management with coworkers, talking about how to come to a resolution in a conflict.
I honestly can't think of one thing he should improve, this class was well planned out.
I am a very visual thinker and I also learn well by doing, not just by lecture, so maybe incorporating more interactive activities may help me learn the material better.
Better powerpoints
I dont always like how the sides are set up
not much to improve upon

Great class.
Thank you for always being available to talk. :)
great class
I really enjoyed this course but I just think he should provide his students with more ways of gaining points because his opportunities where really difficult at some points and for those who don't do good we didn't have other ways of making up points. His teachings where really great but I felt he went a little to fast and it was really hard to just process what I learned in the previous class because we would just keep moving on and on. Besides that he's an awesome teacher and I love his examples.
one of the best courses i have ever taken. can lead to a happier life
This course is the one class at UH Manoa that has changed my life and truly given me skills I will continue to use through out my entire life.

The helping relationship dyads that we formed to practically apply what we learned were really helpful. It gave us a chance to practice the skills we were learning, and to put into action the steps and processes we were learning about.
The lectures--Dr. Sharkey took the time to carefully explain each concept.

18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
I was very grateful for all of the time he spent looking at our rough drafts of our papers to make comments on all of the ways we can improve our papers. That was very valuable for me as I look to continue on to graduate school. I also liked how interactive he made the class, and he encouraged us to speak up in class (one of the ways I learn best.)
He's a really caring professor--I'm not afraid to ask him questions or for help.
Easily accessible for students if necessary.
his knowledge and enthusiasm to teach
His strategies to become a better helper.
He responded promptly to emails and had available time to meet outside.
he knows a lot about what he teaches
Detailed feedback for the practicum and extremely time consuming (for the instructor), yet easy to understand (for the student) method of reviewing papers.
His knowledge on the ssubject
He allowed students to take part in the helping relationship during class sessions. He advised students during the sessions, helped us move the session in the right direction. He gave examples of problem situations in his own life.
Knowledge and enthusiasm about the subject and course.
19. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
I would suggest having examples of each stage in front of the class before the dyads tried to do it.
None.
Essay corrections from book were slightly confusing.
clear expectations listed for the homework
To be less strict on the writing. Also to cut back on a few assignments. It's really hard to learn all the material when we have assignment after assignment constantly moving forward without understanding the current material.
It would be helpful to know what days we are participating in the dyads. (Like posting it on Laulima, if it wasnt already)
easier exams
Perhaps a little more time to work on the practicum. The last stage had extra time compared to the previous stages, but there weren't enough time in the early stages. Since the ground work in the relationship was a lacking, it was more difficult to utilize the extra time in the last stage of the practicum.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Learning different ways to deal with conflict from both sides. Also recognizing real conflict and distinguishing the different types and cycles of conflict. I think this whole coarse is important because we deal with conflict everyday.
I really liked when Sharkey used real life experiences to explain concepts. It really helped me to understand, especially when I could relate to the example. Also, the self-analysis, journal entries, and final paper really helped to tie the class together and let us take a look at how the information in this class can help us.
the journals were really valuable
Dr Sharkey's lectures and use of examples to explain lectures.
all aspects
Learning how to handle conflicting opinions and manage disagreements with people.
everything i learned could be applied to my everyday situations
What we learn in class all ties to what we do in our daily lives. Very interactive class.
The powerpoint slides were a valuable tool for note taking.
Indepth aspects of conflicts.
Although it may seem obvious, being taught to "slow down" during conflict has a whole new meaning for me now. Mostly, because of the concepts of HOW to slow down and what "tools" to use to prevent conflict escalation. Also, just as obvious, learning the dynamics of how perspective really does drive behavior in communication. Learning your own skills approach is imperative in doing your part as an effective communicator.
Sharkey is the man, great communicator and speaker
I thought the section on competant conflict managment was the most valuable. In that section you learn how to turn conflicts into productive conflicts. It was easy to apply to your own life and it was interesting section because there was a lot of self thought and self reflection when covering the material.
He taught more about how to think of situations in a sense that made it possible to then turn a situation full of emotion to a situation that can be resolved.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I think everything is valuable because you can apply it to your life.
I can't think of anything.

His journal entries. I did feel that he gave enough feedback on the journals to help up see if were improving in our own personal conflicts. I would have liked him to have made that part of the course more individualized, so that we could incorporate the new tools learned in the course with actual real life conflicts.
None
I am not sure how to follow the class. I would read the material beforehand but sometimes we weren't on time w/the lecture being given for the next class. Just felt off kilter w/the lecture and readings coinciding.
all the lectures.
I thought the sections on thoeries, styles, and tactics were all mashed together too much that made it hard to learn the individual material. Not to get it confused with that the material wasnt valuable, just how it was taught it was.
He used a lot of videos that made sense, but could have maybe used a few more current references.

16. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I can't think of anything. He was very effective and interesting.
it was good the way it is
its great already
Test questions were not worded in a way that you could understand what was being asked. Very vague and had multiple answers for each question.
His test questions can be a little less vague and unclear. He uses alot of scenario questions for his testing, but during his lectures he is mostly quoting definitions. If he were to incorporate more definition questions then ask the student to give and example...I think we could learn more that way. The essay questions were also tricky...If you did not quote the definitions word for word per say...he would dock points. I think he should be a little more flexible and understanding allowing the wording to be in the students voice...not a quote from his lecture.
More detailed writing on power points for important definitions.
I think it might be me, but I found myself lost throughout most lectures. I tried to catch up as I typed in the information he'd be explaining into the powerpoint slides. For example, the outline format is great. But during transition, some information he gave didn't indicate a segue into the next point. So sometimes I wasn't sure if he moved onto the next topic or if he was still giving an example for the prior point being made.
keep on keeping on
If he could seperate the sections he taught more, maybe by teaching less but expanding more on the remaining subjects. It is mainly to allow more time to distinguish between the different theories and the differences between them.
He could make the examples a little more up-to-date, for example using a clip from family guy or any of NBC's thursday sitcoms that people will feel more strongly about because they are more familiar with them. However I do like the ones he uses, just maybe it could be better if he did things that were more current to our situation. He could also post more detailed notes on his lectures online.

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I think that the employment interview was very useful, being that I am a senior. Also the probing interview was quite useful. Now I have the knowledge of an effective interviewer.
All aspects
Mock interviews and recording these mock interviews for self analysis
I thought that learning how to answer and create questions was the most valuable aspects learned.
The mock interviews.
Practicing interview techniques in front of class
Probing questions. How to get the appropriate and desired info out.
Being video taped and watching how we interact in a mock interview
Learning the basics of asking questions and learning how to ask the questions appropriately and effectively.
The employment interviews.
i found the actual interviews very helpful. also being able to watch the video of the interview made me realized what things i need to improve on as well as some strenghts that i can utilize again in future interviews
The practicing of skills learned.
Employment, Resume, Coverletter materials
9. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
How to perform during an interview and how to correctly interview another person.
Oh yes most definitely
How to frame a open ended questions that encourages a response
I would remember this course by remembering to properly ask closed or open questions.
I'll probably remember how to correctly write a resume. Also how to as questions in an appropriate style to get a better answer from the interviewee. no more open to close switches and bipolar traps!!
Again, the probing questions
Making use of some of the feedbacks I was given during the two mock interviews.
using the skills learned in this class for future reference.
Again the employment interview. I don't think I will use the rest of the other interviews as much in my career.
the bipolar traps. hahaha no i will remember all the different skills and techniques that i can use when i interview for a job or maybe ill be a manager and have to interview potential employees or employees that are seeking promotions.
Having to interview another classmate.

23. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
I think that the exam could be a little more clear. More extra credit or instead of 2 exams possible 3 to help with the points.
Typing out the entire transcript of interviews takes over 3 hours to complete for just 5 points. It turns out to be a waste of time since we only use is as a reference, when we can easily reference the DVD.
The survey project was a little short on time. I feel like if the assignment was given out earlier in the semester it could have been used more in depth or actually have had some actual sit down interviews on the issues we had, as opposed to short handing out interviews.
I think this course could be improved by having more in class activities in order for students to apply the material that is learned. Also there should be more explanation of what is expected in the mock interviews and group presentations. We were given handouts to help us prepare, but it would help if there was more class time to go over the handouts. Overall it was a good course and I know i will use what i learned to better myself in an interview whether as an interviewer or interviewee.
I feel like the work load is more comparable to a higher level class, it is a lot for 290 level. Otherwise its a good class.
The survey assigment was notvery helpful. I felt it was a complete waste of time.
More mock interviews and less lectures. Have a resume and cover letter workshop.
More interaction between students throughout the course for hands-on learning.
When watching video clips for examples, students should watch the entire clip first before pausing and analyzing each individual section. The survey interview could have clearer goals.
i think there should be more presentations. there should also be an assignment where the students pick out an interview off the internet and critique it and identify the different question types and faults.this will enable the students to get a better understanding of the different questions as well as common faults that interviewers make.
Create an option that does not involve group projects. Allow students to pick their own groups.
More clarification on the structure of how he wants the assignments done. More clarification on what is due and when it is due.

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Learning about what causes conflict helped me to understand how to confront it correctly. Also, it taught me how to approach others and to be more understanding of what they may be going through before getting into a conflict with them.
I felt that all aspects of the course were valuable. Before the course, I felt I was a rather good conflict partner, albeit with various challenges and problems in conflict engagement. Now, towards the end of the course, I better understand my role in conflicts and how my behaviors affect the other person's behaviors. I especially appreciated learning about the structure of conflicts. Learning about power and uncertainty stands out in my memory as very useful because I have immediately recognized the structural aspects in my conflicts. I also think the self-analysis, journals, and final analysis paper system is a great system to track my conflict patterns over a semester. As I prepared my final paper, I noticed more about my conflicts than I had written in my journals. I also liked the videos at the beginnings of lectures. It was useful to see a conflict and discuss as a class.
The fact that he is such a good teacher really made the class great
Learning about how to engage in conflict and to look at conflict not as a negative thing but as something that might help certain relationships.
Very useful information was learned in this course. The information I learned can be applied to every day situations. Really opened my eyes to things I never noticed before. Prof Sharkey had a lot of useful personal experiences as examples. Dr. Sharkey responds to emails very quicky!
journals
by far the course content itself has been instrumental in my dealing with conflicts. Absolutely valuable.
Anger Management, Tactics to avoid in conflict.
Tactics to avoid while engaging in conflict. Understanding different conflict styles and how to approach these different styles.
the aspects that you could relate to your own life. the learning on how to handle conflict and realizing that conflict is really a good thing.
I think that every aspect of this course is valuable. Especially the reading materials.
Learning different tactics people use in conflict. I also felt that the conflict journals were very benifical.
The overall topic of this course was most valueable. I know and will use conflict strategies throughout my life.
I found the use of visual aids (dvds, video clips, etc.) quite useful in helping me understand theories and concepts. The instructor did a great job by including students in discussion because many different perspectives on various issues were provided.
His teaching style! So relaxed yet incredibly insightful!
Everything!
I think that all aspects of the course was valuable because they are all usable in real life.
The quality of the professor's lectures.
The most valuable aspect of the course was all of the real life examples that the professor offered. It helped to make the concepts easier to understand. The games we played the class before the midterms were also helpful to help us remember the material.
i thought that all the conflict management strategies was very valuable to implement into my everyday life. they have provided me with the skills to become a better commmunicator.
Using what we learned in real life (journals).
theories and concepts.
The insights were extremely valuable.
Learning how to handle and deal with conflicts in a more effective and appropriate manner.
All the information given in course was applicable to everyday life and very valuable.
Just the general information in the course itself was informative and valuable. You learn a lot in this course, especially about relationships including your own.
9. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I tried as much as possible to keep up with the readings, but I really can't handle reading on the computer. I would prefer buying a course reader or textbook, but I do understand that I can just as easily print out the readings. I believe learning about face and the various strategies of saving or giving face was useful, but I got a bit bored with that particular section. I can't explain exactly why, but that part of lectures and readings seemed very redundant and more tedious than it needed to be.
Everything was good
I wish the study guides were more specific.

Course Readings
cannot think of any
There was nothing in this course that was unvaluable.
The essay questions on the 2nd midterm. I thought I understood what was being asked, but I did not and my grade was alot lower because of the first short answer question.
The final course paper.
You could consider finding more modern video clips of conflicts. It would be easier for students to relate to video content that they are familiar with.
The smelly classroom which often smelled like urine.
Can't think of any
There wasn't any aspects that were not valuable.
On-line readings were a bit tedious at times.
I felt that everything was valuable.
I thought that there wasn't anything of little value.
None
The methods of assessment may not have been the best for as many concepts and readings as we were presented with. Too much straight lecturing.
I don't feeling anything was invaluable. There was a reason for each assignment that was given throughout the course, so I never got the feeling that I was doing something "just because."

10. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
The great presentations and making me realize more about myself.
Hopefully how much it inspired me to develop communication competence. I feel the three aspects of communication competence (knowledge, motivation, skills) were very clearly discussed and that I have the tools to be able to improve my conflict behaviors. I will remember: how helpful the journals were the toothpaste conflict how hard I've had to work since the first opportunity how rewarding my hard work has been it takes around seven seconds for a student/person to determine whether they have a question they'd like to ask.
The lessons and knowledge that i learned from the course
Learning how think before engaging in conflicts with certain individuals. Whether or not the relationship is worth engaging in the conflict and if I care enough about that particular person to try and resolve the conflict. I will also remember the tips and tools that I have gained from the class.
the videos shown in the beginning of class to show conflict situations.
journal entries
The tactics to avoid during conflict
the conflict journals we had to do, and how I became more competent in communication with my family.
Tactics to avoid: allness statements, blaming, face threats
the stories the teacher told which were amazing and knowing there are different styles of conflict and conflict resolution
Pretty much everything in this course I will take with me for the future.
The interesting stories Professor Sharkey gives. I really enjoyed how I could relate the material to real life.
Helping me realize how conflicts work, the meaning behind them, and how to properly solve them.
It's okay to engage in conflict. Focus on the conflict issue, your goal(s), and your partner's goal(s).
The urine smelling classroom.
applying the concepts I learned in class to my own personal experiences from doing conflict journals and the reflection paper of myself.
I'll probably remember that I could relate everything I learned in class to real life.
The professor
I will remember this course everytime I am in a conflict.
most definately
Being one of the most useful course I took because how it relates to real life.
Professors dating and working experiences
How I deal with my own conflicts.
The knowledge I gained, and how it has affected my real life relationships...positively.
the way I started to analyze my own relationships.

17. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I think this course is organized beautifully. I like that it's split according to the three components of competence. I found the Jeopardy review sessions not very helpful, mostly because I didn't have the time to study before the review sessions to really gain anything from them. I really can't think of anything I dislike or that would improve the teaching. Dr. Sharkey is PERFECT for this course.
Nothing he is a great teacher
Maybe to go more into the readings and make sure that we are understanding the material.
more specific study guides
Don't over analyze, over discussion topics, you lose attention, move one. Perhaps, focus more time on rehearsing and implementing effective conflict mgmt skills.

He's already perfect!
include more videos to enhance lectures so that students can see how concepts apply in real life social interactions.
I think that my instructor can improve on putting everything online. like the definitions of terms and the examples.
Less on-line readings
The class we spent guessing about the prof's personal characteristics was not an effective use of class time. The point that we all make assumptions and generalizations could be made very well in 15 minutes without so much detailed autobiographical data.
I would suggest including more information on the powerpoint slides.
i thought that the journals were really helpful so maybe more journals
Not sure, perhaps do some class activities.
Use textbook in stead of reading materials.
More actual practice in dealing with confliscts; even "play-acting"
Perhaps have the conflict journal paper due a week sooner, that way we can focus more time on preparing for the final during the last week of instruction. Another good suggestion that was brought up in class, was have our most common conflict partner fill out a questionnaire in the beginning and end of the semester as well. That way we can see from the other person's perspective if there really was a change.
I'm not sure. he did a very good job. It was well organized and very interesting.
