Loved it and loved my teacher! Would recommend her to anyone!

The love the required materials for this course. The articles, books, videos, and the discussion questions were all stimulating and enjoyable. I especially liked the museum assignment because we get to adventure out and learn about something of our own interest.

I really enjoyed reading The Medea and learning about women from different countries around the world.
Not just reading materials. Mixture of videos and reading materials helps things not get too monotonous.

nothing needs to be improved. it was excellent class!
I wish I knew where my grade was through the semester. I know I was doing ok with the essays, but wasn't sure about the discussions. Would have liked a grade book to look at!
Maybe the forum posts could change into a point-receiving discussions in where the initial post would get the full points and in a subsequent time frame, any comments made to any one of the initial posts would get a point extra credit. That way the topic discussion can keep going.
I think we need one deadline for initial posting and the second deadline for comments.
My only complaint is the time consumption for a 100 level class.
Using the Laulima Calendar, so that students can come look at the portal and see what assignments or readings are due each day.

Ms. Buchanan is really sincere professor and I like her style of class. She is always there to help students.

I really liked how she incorporated all types of media to teach. She used recordings, music, videos, and readings from different books and hands outs. I also liked that she brought in guest speakers and we got to see different peoples perspectives on the subject! This was a great class!
Everything actually, learning about women in history was interesting.

I enjoyed the fact that she was well organized and extremely educated on her course! I really wish she taught at a higher standing class because I would def take her class all over again. She exudes happiness and is really easy to approach.
I really loved all the different methods/media used. The guest speakers and videos were very enjoyable, and there was a good mix of reading and lectures. I also liked that the quizzes weren't to penalize us, just to make us keep up with the reading.

The teacher helped update us with certain things though email. There was a great amount of videos presented so it helped with our learning habits.
I enjoyed her lectures. Very insightful and knowledgeable.
She was a really chill teacher who tried her best to make the class interesting and doable. Yes, the readings are a bit overwhelming but the class is really interesting so I really didn't mind it.

I really like how this course is structured and everything taught in it. I can't think of anything to make it better it is already a really good class.
spread out the reading more, crazy overload of reading when it was more than a chapter per class
Maybe less classes could be lectures. I would like there to be a more variety of what we do in class instead of lectures.
I really wish that more of the classmates chose to participate more because it would have made it that much better. Except because they were younger they were more shy, and I believe if this class was half its size she would be able to make a larger impact.
There was a lot of reading and it was hard to keep up with. However, I know this is a college course and the reading was necessary!
It could possibly be improved by going over more of the content we were being tested on.

This course could be improved by having a textbook that better explained women in world history. I feel the textbook that was required just gave an overall outlook on history and often times focused more on men than on women.
Even more inclusivity of varying gender identities and less assumption of the gender of historical individuals, although these things are contingent upon the availability of texts...
- don't start the group project right before spring break ... too hard coordinating with group members! Tough too cuz the groups were so big. - reading assignments seemed like way too much material to try to learn for quizzes ... maybe some guidance on what we should be learning from the reading for the quizzes? - maybe figure some way to get people to show up to class on time : )
This course is a good course. I think people take it to lightly when they don't show up to class.

This course could be improved by having more reminders about readings that are due. I often forgot that we had readings.
More movies and learn interesting history about women. Limit on reading because we have to read so much!

The course could improve in it's focus on what the course is there for. A lot of students likely assume they will be learning about something more gender based. The course was more like a social studies class that did not exactly capture my interest.
I do believe there was too much reading. I also think she tried to squeeze in too much info on too many things too quickly. We were constantly changing topics that we could not be thorough in one topic before switching to another.
First of all, there are a lot of readings and the quizzes for these readings are ridiculous because she picks out specific details. I would have liked it if the questions on the quizzes were more general or were the big idea of the reading.

I know it's not very constructive criticism, but I really loved the class! It was very eye-opening, thank you :)
I really enjoyed this course I found the information to be very interesting!
I often felt uncomfortable in this class. Particular instances included the instructor saying Native men were "cute" or "handsome" or something, and an exercise involving coming up with a cast for The Epic of Gilgamesh in which most students' as well as the instructor's suggestions were white actors. I also felt that my own identity and indigenous identities were not being respected when, as we learned about "third-gender", the instructor and texts we read clarified that it was "not just men but also women" who identified as genders other than what would now typically be their assigned genders, thus misgendering them and implying that people's true gender is their assigned gender.
Kids should be taught the truth about Columbus, Indian slavery, commercial motivation, etc in their history classes. Especially in junior and senior high schools ... no one would dream of fictitious science classes, so why didn't they tell us the truth (... or various theories, etc when there is doubt) in our history classes?

What I like about this class is learning about how women were viewed around the world and how we related it back to today's society.
Bringing in videos and guest speakers to present made the class more exciting. The videos she presents brings up that media can be both informative and dissected to help further understand where patriarchy lurks in present day media. Again, I really liked when guest speakers came in to talk about their areas of study as well.
I loved how Shirley tied together the past and present to show how old ways of thinking still impact our lives today
I enjoyed the contrast between various cultures over time and how we really got a look at the amount of diversity presented on our tiny little planet. I always appreciated life, but now I do even more. Also, the relevant connections to modern culture helped cement the concepts in reality while allowing us to break from the bleaker aspects of history.
The guest presenters were interesting.

The content was very interesting and how it was presented made it even better.
I like that Shirley assigned interesting readings. I appreciated that Shirley would sometimes give us a brief summary or a question(s) to focus on before the reading, if she anticipated the reading may be difficult to follow. I like how Shirley would include a lot of visuals and video clips in lecture to support the readings. Often the visuals were more current/relevant so for easier to relate to and make the connection with the reading.

Not so much a fault of the instructor but the small groups are difficult when multiple members don't participate and the brunt of the work falls upon two out the 8 group members

its a great course just continue to get better.
Even though it may be difficult, perhaps bringing in a few more examples of men being victims of patriarchy. Though king Tut, Gilgamesh and Manti Te'o had been good examples, I still felt like there was an imbalance in the course.
The class could be a little more interactive. It would be great to have discussion sections.
I would suggest more numerous but smaller writing assignments, and harsher penalties for late work (each assignment has several people who apparently weren't motivated enough to finish on time). The quizzes are good as they are. Maybe a bit more focus on why gender inequalities pop up in each area/time, rather than the pure fact that they do.
Replace the museum paper with something else.

The museum essay didn't seem to have any purpose. It be better if we argued about out future as a women. Also not much class participation so surveys before every class for feedback would be great and shows that we're reading.
Utilize Prof S. Buchanan as the mold of what all prof should teach/instruct courses. She has very rare enduring qualities that make understanding the plethera of material much more relatable and functionally understandable. Many/ALL prof could learn better by/through her way of teaching & instructing.

to me, there was a lot of reading assignments at one time. it got kind of confusing on which one we were talking about in class, but other than that it was okay
Make it interesting, in a way that the students can think critically about the world and society. Have the students take on the course in a more hands- on approach!

Great job.
I had really enjoyed this course, especially the start of the course as we delved into the start of human history before 'civilizations'. How humans have migrated and had a similar start overall teaches about similarities in humanity from hundreds of thousands of years ago to present day peoples scattered around the world today.
Shirley is a wonderful instructor and I am thrilled to have had this course.
Really a great class - 10/10 would take again if it wouldn't be using up time I could be using for other required courses.
I'm really curious as to how the minds of men work and think and what a men's world is really like that some would consider women as tools.

I expected for the group project to be terrible, but it actually went well because I was lucky enough to have a few good people in my group who wanted a good grade. I personally do not believe that group projects are meant for college and I think it was shown throughout some of the groups who were unprepared.
The football players that were in my class were EXTREMELY DISRUPTIVE and the professor did barely anything to stop them. Very hard to stay interesting in a course when I don't want to show up for the class, due to the irritation and headaches from the football players.
