25. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I think the lecture material could be used to help answer some of the worksheet problems.
I would suggests reformatting the statistical portion of the course. The statistics were done too quickly. Even though most of us have taken a statistics class already, I found it very difficult following the explanations.
The lab protocol handouts were a bit confusing to organize. A little more organization of the section units would be very helpful.

At certain times, I found it difficult to keep track of the different experiments. To improve the course, have students summarize what they're trying to accomplish each class before class.

Dr. Cozy has excellent pedagogical skills
If papers that will be discussed in class (and other important literature) was made available on laulima at the beginning of the semester it would make it easier to write the introduction to the paper and to participate fully in the discussions.

Giving over past research articles, and writing a final paper in a research article format
Homework that better our understanding of the material.
The experiments were fun.
The experiments that were performed were actual experiments that could be applied to a research setting. It was also interesting to get be collecting results over the semester instead of doing many experiments with known results.

The worksheets were time consuming and not always clear.
waiting for space in the hood, waiting for gel to run, waiting for digests, all the times waiting was involved

Writing the paper, there seemed to be very little to discuss. Also if the journal discussions were done earlier it would make the writing process easier.
35. What changes would you make in the writing assignments?
Maybe have a 1-on-1 session with students when going over final assignment
No changes, the assignments forced me to start writing the final paper early instead of procrastinating

the room was a bit hot which lead me to feel uncomfortable.
Maybe have students work on different mutants of anabaena. Keep data different and interesting. I have no other suggestions

This class is an excellent undergraduate teaching lab that extends beyond canned experiments and exposes students to common techniques in mol. bio. Many students may leave the university without ever engaging in any undergraduate research and this lab enables them to gain first hand experience in some of the laboratory techniques discussed in lecture.
