8. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Provide the powerpoints about a week in advance. Include practice questions during the lectures
Close book exams and individual quiz.
Youtube videos were helpful, but sometimes there were a bit too many videos and articles in each powerpoint.
I like that it includes a lot of videos, etc. keeps coming to class interesting. also I think the open book format for this class is a good fit. challenging enough but not too hard
She requires students to take weekly quizes, in which she does not let students review their wrong answers. She needs to let us review the answers we get wrong in order to foster development and student's understanding of the material.
Dr. Constantin is an excellent instructor who makes the subject of genetics fun and interested.
Worksheets specific to each assigned video to clarify what information should be focused on (especially for those that are long and info dense)
Perhaps the only thing I would recommend to improve the teaching of this course is to show a few less videos in class. I think the required videos did contribute to my learning and kept me engaged. I would continue with those.
I like how we are quizzed each week to see material again before the big exams. I don't think much should change. I like how the lectures are supplemented with videos as well.
Carolyn was an awesome instructor. She is witty and makes the information, that could possibly be boring to some, come alive. I am not sure how she could improve the teaching of this course...
Professor Constantin could discuss everything that is going to be on the Exams (i.e.: the articles she wants us to read and the videos she expects us to watch)

Professor Constantin's enthusiasm about genetics makes me interested and motivated to learn. I have learned a lot of interesting things about genetics, and the use of visuals and videos has made learning about genetics easier. I like her use of worksheets to help us understand the material better.
It is obvious Prof. Constantin is an expert on the topic. She is a passionate, knowledgeable teacher which makes learning from her enjoyable.
You can tell she really enjoys teaching and genetics because of the way she presents the material and gets excited about it. It definitely makes class more interesting!
Carolyn made the class fun and interesting with her fun personality and enthusiasm for teaching!
she is very enthusiastic about material "FABULOUS!"
awesome professor. even though some of the information was hard to absorb, she always made it somewhat interesting. (:
This class should not be mandatory for nursing students.
EXCELLENT.
So many select all answers on exams. I would rather do a closed book exam and understand the most important concepts than to have to look up and spend a lot of time looking up information to answer very specific questions with select all answers.
Professor Constantin is very enthusiastic about this course. She actually got me quit interested in the material. Her passion for the subject really kept me engaged during the class. She has extensive knowledge on the subject and keeps the lectures interesting. I really enjoyed her class and would recommend this instructor. Overall excellent instructor!
You can tell Prof Constantin is enthusiastic about the material and it makes learning more fun.
Professor Constantin's enthusiasm for teaching genetics really showed and made learning about the subject much more enjoyable.
This course does not help me as a nurse. I feel it is unnecessary as part of the curriculum. Take it out now.

9. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I haven't received a final grade for this course, yet. However, as of the writing of this survey, I am VERY FRUSTRATED with this class, and this instructor. This is a hard class, but more importantly, this is VITAL knowledge for nursing. First of all, this was NOT a basic nursing level patho class. This was taught at an advanced practice level. Although many in the class have risen to the challenge, and are passing, several are not. It is terribly disheartening to feel like a failure at this level. Professor Constantin would benefit from training on teaching adult learners. She did not vary her teaching style to meet different learning needs. She seemed satisfied that many were passing, when it is vital that ALL pass. That is not to say that she should just pass people, but she should work with our learning styles to ensure that we will be competent nurses. She refused to offer extra credit, and meeting with her in her office accomplished nothing--no strategies for success were offered, no additional chances. If given the option, I would NOT take another class taught by Professor Constantin. Additionally, quizzes were pointless. I will never know what I got wrong, because she did not release the answers after the quiz. Most quizzes in laulima are offered several times so that students can learn from what the got wrong. Not Professor Constantin's quizzes. She keeps them a mystery so that "we won't give the answers to other students & she won't have to make up new ones." Awful.
- Never answer a question with "I don't know" or "Ask your classmate." - Teach us from our book and not from material you find more acceptable. - Allow students to be successful. Giving three exams valued at 25% each, equaling 75% of the final score, is setting your students up for failure. - Being a bully isn't the right way to become a successful instructor - Stand by your word and stop coming up with excuses. - Realize not every student has a degree in Biology, Chemistry, or Science in general. This should be an introductory course, and I feel this class to be way above my head.
This is dense material. Having essay questions before the actual exam and NOT having open book tests. We had both and I did not retain nearly as much information knowing that I would have an open-book test. Take more time to delve into the main concepts for those without a Biology background. Reviewing the answers from and concepts from the weekly quizzes would be a great way to reinforce the information and determine areas of struggle.
I think the presentation of information was much improved after the first exam. The pace was more manageable and the information appeared more organized.
It really enforced my learning when content from this course was aligned with material from other classes. I know it would probably be difficult, especially because some courses end earlier than others, but it would be beneficial for future cohorts if courses could somehow work along side each other.
Dr. Constantin could rely more on the textbook than her power-points for evidence based learning. The textbook was not my favorite-the font was too small and hard to read. I also think the content that the professor was teaching was a little advanced for a intro to pathology course. It really felt like it was an advanced course and I had trouble following along. I do feel like I learned a lot from this course, however, the information I did learn I feel like I taught myself using the textbook and study guide which was really not utilized by the instructor. Also, I wish information on quizzes and testes were taken from the textbook instead of her PowerPoint informationals.
I would suggest giving more tests to break up the material, a test every 2-3 weeks. The quizzes were great and I would suggest to continue with those.
NO open book tests!
Professor Constantin could improve on teaching this course by working in concert with the other professors of our program from the beginning of the semester.
To help students succeed on the short essay quiz, it would be great to give out specific topics to study for. Sometimes the quiz questions do not reflect what you said would be on the quiz.
Professor Constantin was a fair instructor-she tried several methods to determine which best suited the class and each individual's learning style. She even incorporated pharmacology so that these two courses would align and provide additional learning reinforcement. She did try to address a lot of material, which she did acknowledge and modify.
I think that the inclusion of take home graded assignments would help reinforce the class concepts and materials. Utilizing case studies and critical thinking questions that are applicable in the clinical setting will also be helpful for those who learn in various ways.
Professor Constantin is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about patho. I would appreciate and greatly benefit if patho coincided with pharm; I know this was the instructors' intention but it didn't always happened. I would also suggest smaller exams, closed book. With the amount of material we were responsible for, I understand why our exams were open book but I would suggest smaller, closed book exams, every 2 weeks or so. I believe this would help students retain information. It's difficult to study for an open book exam because you're like "I can just look that up." But I have no suggestions to her actual teaching style. She is great!
She did a great job of breaking down concepts, and helping students that struggled with the material. In fact, a little less focus on the students NOT getting it would be nice...some people will perform poorly or fail a course; that is to be expected.
I think it would be more beneficial and increase student's learning if the exams were split into 5 exams instead of compressing everything into 3 exams.

Prof. Constantin was the most prepared and enthusiastic of our teachers. When many students did not do well on her first exam, she provided a variety of alternate tests to reinforce the information. The extra effort was extremely appreciated.
I really appreciate Dr. Constantin as a professor. I believe that she genuinely cares about us mastering the material. She will repeat the same concepts over and over again to make sure that you are keeping up and making connections between topics. She makes herself very available and is incredibly easy to talk to. Her in-class essay tests force you to keep up with the material. I appreciate her pushing us to succeed.
I wish the weighted averages of the grades were distributed differently, especially for how hard the course was. I feel that there was no room for any mistakes, not to mention no opportunities for extra credit to boost low grades. The professor made this course VERY difficult to pass and I was not a "lazy" student. I went over and beyond what was expected of me in this course and I am still struggling to pass it....However, I really enjoy Patho as a subject and the content that I learned from reading the textbook and completing the study guide was very interesting. I think that the Elsevier adaptive quizzing would be a helpful tool for this course.
Constantin is a very knowledgeable and dynamic professor. Three hour lectures are brutal, but she does a great job of keeping your interest. Course material is tough stuff, but she makes it fun to learn it if you can keep up.
Closed book tests force the students to know and learn the material. Open book tests just teach students to be able to look up material. It's not doing anyone any favors.
I would suggest that she continue to adjust her class to the level of the cohort but offer those who want to learn at even faster pace more advanced material, i.e. more disease patho.
Overall, I enjoyed your class a lot. Learned so much about patho! :)
It is evident Professor Constantin enjoys teaching--she took care in her presentations to make them informative and fun. She does the same in her lecture; making pathophysiology enjoyable is no small feat! Most importantly is that she really cares and wants you to learn the material and tries to find a way to do this, while recognizing that there are many different learning styles.
Professor Constantin herself, as a professor/lecturer, is absolutely amazing. Patho is a difficult course but she makes it fun and interesting; I always looked forward to coming to class not so much for the content but to listen to her lecture. She did a great job of offering different alternatives to demonstrate that we learned specific topics. I also appreciate the work that she put into her powerpoints and providing links to relevant videos to facilitate our learning. I hope to have her in future courses :)
Dr. Constantin is a great, knowledgeable, entertaining instructor. Her character and way of teaching definitely wakes you up and become more attentive especially for an evening class.

I really enjoyed taking this class from an instructor who truly cares about her students, academically and personally. I was going through a lot of personal challenges at the start of the semester and was highly considering dropping the class. Then Professor Constantin asked me to call her personally to discuss my issues. I feel she went above and beyond of the scope of professor. If it wasn't for her caring personality and encouraging words, I would likely have dropped the class. I'm glad I stuck with it.
when she did visual learning such as youtube, since I'm more of a visual learning and like classes rather than independent learning.
She is open to feedback and very helpful. You can tell she cares about her students and what she teaches. Her review questions and study guides have helped me, thank you for that Carolyn.
Prof. Constantin was very knowledgeable about the subject matter she taught and proved herself to be a subject matter expert in her field.
Professor Constantin had given the above and beyond to redirect my misfocued study pattern. I have learned the quality and value of Pathophysiology that directly enhance the patient case and course of action as a practitioner through semester by Professor C. Now everything became relevant for my future practice with her great teaching. Thank you very much.
Dr. Constantin provided several learning opportunities for her students such as the PPT presentation. She makes her PPT lectures very interesting. I learned so much (and a good review from my previous/present nursing pathophysiology, although sometimes, info can be overwhelming; Dr. Constantin is able to guide us on the important/highlights of the course. She answers her emails and our questions right away.
Professor was very helpful when students had questions or comments and tried to help the students understand pathophysiology better with use of videos and powerpoints
She was easily accessible. she responded to my emails quickly and answers all my questions.
Excellent review questions and preparation for the exam, clear guidelines.
11. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Everything we learned this semester was entirely relevant, however it felt like a massive amount of chapters to go over. But I understand that it must be done
N/A
none
Nothing. Patho is a difficult course.
Sometimes, it took a while to obtain her reply to the questions we asked.
n/a
only 2 blackboard collaborate sessions- I would have liked more
12. What did you like most about your online course experience?
The powerpoints were very organized and easy to understand. I feel like I've learned so much from them
I liked the blackboard collaborate-- I wish we had more sessions. I think that it is easier to understand patho through lecture rather than just reading. I really liked the fact that our grades for the test were reported immediately. I did have some struggles with laulima uploading the test, but the laulima team responded very quickly and I was able to complete it.
the ppts, it forced us to take our learning to another level and be able to construct a power point presentation that was informative and concise.
The announcements are great!
Working on my own time.
24/7 AVAILABILITY.
Flexibility of when to study
i had no problem taking the online tests or quizzes;
the available resources and online video explantations for complex topics
I was able to read and go through the material at my own pace
13. What did you like least about your online course experience?
I did feel like I never had time to really saturate the information.
lack of lectures-- more lectures on youtube or blackboard would be great!
I just think this course should be a class. It is such as fundamental course and will be incorporated in our career that knowledge would be better consolidated if it was a class rather than online course.
Nothing
Lack of instant feed back as in a class room setting.
If one does not have individual internet access or UH internet system problem, we cannot do anything.
No face to face contact, or immediate answer to questions
i like going to class and seeing the professor face to face, especially if the concepts are difficult to understand.
n/a
Having to e-mail questions, and learn from only student presentations in just a few of the topics

Not at this time.
Dr. Constantin is super supportive and an advocate for her student, I try and take all of her courses.

8. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Maybe change the wording of questions on tests/quizzes so that they are more straightforward. Sometimes questions were confusing and it was hard to decipher what was being asked.
By choosing a different textbook.
Maybe have some group work so that we can apply what we learned.
It would be appreciated to have a study guide or blue print of what topics to know for the quizzes, and most especially for the exams.
N/A
I feel the lectures are very dense, and the topic is very dry. I understand that is the nature of the subject, however, Professor Constantin could maybe go over the more difficult concepts in a slower fashion so it is easier to understand.
I think you could make this course completely online. i feel also that sometimes her rationale for doing things were because laulima is challenging to work, but it was not what was best or most fair for the students. perhaps she could get more training in laulima to be able to better accommodate students.
I enjoyed every minute and will retain the information taught to me.
Please find a way to keep the class quiet. Is there a way to muzzle people? The most irritating and frustrating element was the noise from the class. Maybe just throw an eraser at the people who talk and disturb the class. Thats what my intermediate teachers did. Be more scary so that idiots in class shut the hell up.
Constant miscommunication. Professor Constantin isn't always very clear and can never get a straight answer out of her.
Maybe more hands on learning. Difficult topics and easily to get distracted, so I feel more Q&As like at the beginning of the class would have been good. I learned most from the worksheets done together
More example questions to practice our knowledge prior to quizzes and exams.

I like it how it is.
Telling someone to read your mind on a test is a huge deterrent for me to attend class and respect my teacher. Or excuses such as well I'm up late doing this by myself and I have a life outside of class. We are all aware because likewise we have a life outside of school and yet it wouldn't be an excuse that our teacher would count as legitimate for a missed assignment or something. I felt that this class could have been a positive one, but most of the information was self taught and just felt the instructor lacked motivation to teach the class at an appropriate level.
I think she have more clinically relevant applications.

Please consider making this course an online course because it would be convenient to a lot of students. Students would have to come to class during exams and presentation only.
She is very knowledgeable of the course. She is able to explain complicated and new concepts in simple terms that is easy to understand. That's a plus!
Her ppts were helpful in giving an overall picture of each chapter and I liked that she included supplementary materials directly on the slides such as links to websites, articles, and videos explaining more about the topic. I also thought it was helpful that the quizzes/tests were open book/notes because it was less stressful not having to worry about memorizing every little detail and I could focus more on understanding the broader concepts.
Professor Carolyn is very knowledgeable, approachable, and very fun to have in class! Professor Carolyn is very knowledgeable with the course content and she explains the concepts well in lecture. Secondly, she is very approachable. If I have any questions concerning a question or concept she is always willing to describe the content in more detail and in a way that I can understand it thoroughly. Lastly, her enthusiastic attitude made learning much more fun, interesting, and easy to learn! :) I thoroughly enjoyed having Professor Carolyn for genetics! She made the class fun and interesting! :)
I do not think other semesters should be allowed to take this course. I would want her to teach the advanced Patho course taught in sixth semester.
I thought making the exams and quizzes open book was a good idea, it was still challenging due to the select all that applies questions. She was a great instructor and you could tell her enthusiasm in teaching the content. She made it easier to understand.
Love this instructor! She gets on the students level and effectively communicates with us. She also makes class fun and interesting.
She is an awesome instructor! Very approachable and she makes genetics understandable. She is clear and concise and her course is challenging.
You are super hilarious and I love your personality. It was a very fun and interesting class. You made me become more passionate towards Genetics and I thank you for that.
Professor Constantin is a very knowledgeable instructor in her field. She has a quirky personality and is very enthusiastic about genetics. Also, she is approachable if we need any clarifications or assistance regarding assignments. I appreciate that she provides a hardcopy version of the quizzes and exams to refer to for those who dislike online quizzes/exams but still need to input our answers online.
Very passionate about content and provided resources from outside the book that were very interesting, applicable directly to the course content, and helped clarify concepts. The material is very interesting and the teacher has a well-organized class to highlight this idea.
This class was very enjoyable to take. The only thing I did not like about it was that it was a once-a- week course (so it was very long), and the time at which it was scheduled (6pm) was not conducive to a good learning environment. Otherwise, Professor Constantin was very knowledgeable, and very interesting to hear lecture.
You're a good instructor in that you know your shit. But I feel like you need to tell people shut the fuck up. There were days i left early because of to much chatter from the people around me. I really appreciated your flexibility, and your demeanor. You are truly excited about this subject. I know you tried to set the house rules so that people would be quiet, but to be honest, you were not successful. Also, your breaks are too long. Just get through the material and keep things moving.
This class should be offered online as attendance is not part of the grade.
Overall a good class, although I feel like I will be forgetting more than half of the topics learned b/c of it only being ppts
The professor makes this lecture fun.
Professor Constantin was an amazing instructor! Her lectures were always interesting, current, and entertaining. I wish she could teach patho for the 6th semester students! Have a great winter break.
.
Professor Constatin was very good at asking for feedback and listening to students opinions to improve her course.

Professor Constantin was very helpful in all aspects of my clinical experience. Everytime I had questions or needed clarifications for things, she would respond timely with detailed explanations. She is very approachable and gives a lot of recommendations to improve on the paper and oral presentation. She's very professional and objective when it comes to grading school work. I love her inputs in all of the things that I did in clinical. She helped me better myself and uplifted my confidence.
Carolyn made her group do the class project to how SHE felt it should be done and not with the rest of the class. We all got our papers back and had to re-do them. We were the only group in N460 that this happened to. Not to mention Carolyn never came to meet with the manager on my unit who is very perturbed with her by this action (or inaction I should say). Carolyn criticised me at the end of my shift when she showed up after a long, terrible day and quizzed me regarding the patho of my patients. She then proceeded to tell me I was a bad nurse and that she would not feel comfortable having me as the nurse if that patient was her father. Yeah that made me feel so awesome. Carolyn has never had more than two patients in her life and here we have 4-5 pts on the floor at once. What does she expect?!? She doesn't know becuase she never took care of more than 2 people at any one time. Caring for more than 2 patients takes extreme organizaitonal skills and nursing skills. Not the best way to end my time here at UH.
Professor Constantin is the one of the best teacher I know. Although I was very stressed out this whole semester, she was a very good support for me. I was able to freely express to her how I feel about my experiences and she has given me very supportive and helpful advices. She is somewhat straight forward but I like that about her. She gets to the point. She is provides feedback in a timely manner as well. She depicts a good professor who is organized and knowledgable but at the same time, supportive.

10. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
videos, quizzes, and the her power points were were helpful. Professor Constantin was approachable and directed us on the important concepts in understating the material. I enjoyed her classes.
She is already great!
Possibly use a different text book- the Copstead 5th Ed Pathophysiology book is very heavy with content and the font is very small.
The best professor in MEPN. Motivated, enthusiastic, understanding, intelligent, and FUN! She makes learning FUN! She is hard working and truly cares about being a student advocate.
The course was great - I would not change a thing.
There could be better editing of the quizzes to be more consistent with the textbook. Also maybe try to edit the questions to make them more specific. But this is a hard course to do that with and so I understand why these questions are very hard to write.
Possibly have shorter powerpoint presentations.
What helps me a lot is having a quiz before the class based on the chapter reading(s). That way it forces me to read the chapters and come prepared to class where the teacher will re-enforce subject material that was read. While the open book test was good since we covered so much material, I honestly feel that I would learn more if it was closed book...forcing me to really grasp the concepts of each system/disease etc. In the beginning Professor Constantin would pick on random students to answer questions as part of review. I would encourage continuing this as it makes us think/study more and if the student that was picked didn't know the answer, he/she will always remember that answer/concept from then on.
Shorter quiz times might ensure that students internalize the material more strongly.
I think Carolyn Constantin did a great job in teaching this course. There was a lot of material to cover but her presentations were always very organized and very thorough.
Carolyn rocks. She is amazingly experienced, patient, and has an amazing manner with "high maintenance", intense MEPN students. She should be utilized for additional MEPN courses! She should teach BOTH patho and pharm since there is so much overlap and she seems to know a ton about both areas, can explain in ways that we understand, and is willing/able to work with us when we are confused or feeling frustrated.
My only suggestion is to condense the slides.

She really listens to the concerns of her students.
Katie. the GA, was very helpful as well.
Because of Ms.Constantin, I really enjoyed learning this difficult material.
Consistently open to using additional resources, and having a class discussion. Excellent instructor! Appreciate all of her time and effort to put together meaningful, well thought out powerpoints and also sending out summary sheets to help summarize the key concepts. :)
Stellar instructor who showed care and concern for student learning. She guided students to learning without spoon feeding the material
Carolyn is one of those instructors who inspires me. She is so knowledgeable and passionate about her field. I thank her for teaching me so much and taking time to answer any of my questions.
This was a great course and the instructor was amazing! She is very knowledgable and facilitated my learning in every aspect. I really enjoyed her class and hope to have her as an instructor again in the future!
Professor Constantin was always prepared and organized. She would have the ppts ready for the students from a few days to a week before the lecture for us to review/study. I appreciate how she would take the students feedback into consideration and admit when a quiz/test question was worded in a way that majority of the students were confused. I really enjoyed this class and Professor Constantin's enthusiasm would make it difficult to fall asleep during lecture :)
I dont think that this should reflect Carolyn at all: I think that we should either have this class span over two semesters so that we can thoroughly cover all of the content or cover less content but more in depth. I didnt really learn to much but I do now have a lot of content that I can go back and reference.
Professor Constantin shows bounding enthusiasm for the subject matter, which is evident in her energetic instruction. She is passionate about teaching and exhibits genuine concern and compassion in the time with her students. Thank you!
Fantastic instructor who is fair and knowledgable of the course content. Follows up on class questions and gives supplemental information that supports required content. Great professor!
Thank you so much for teaching this class and for listening to us grumble at times. I truly enjoyed being in your class and I hope you teach us more courses throughout our MEPN program.
More opportunities for formal study sessions (with the TA) would be good. Maybe optional weekend and/or evening review of what was covered in the prior 2 or 3 weeks... Not just 2 days before an exam? Katie is a huge help on those Sunday sessions, though!!! SHE should teach something too.... maybe 504 or 505? :)
Carolyn is a delightful teacher with such a great personality. She is easy to listen to and I appreciate how she instructs with enthusiasm. She is fair when it comes to her quizzes and exams. Her information is thorough; I appreciate the effort Carolyn puts into her slides and finding extra sources to promote comprehension like youtube videos or fact sheets.
