13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Elizabeth Colwill is extremely passionate and requires you to always perform at your best. I learned a lot from this course and at times the materials were challenging but she would help you understand the materials.
She is a passionate professor with strong goals who puts an emphasis on framing historical narratives in ways that feel relevant to student' lives.
She is a wonderful professor. Highly knowledgeable and excited about what she is teaching, which makes the students more excited about it as well.
Dr. Colwill is very knowledgable and enthusiastic about the course material. She is very friendly and approachable.
One of the professors I've had with so much passion for her class. Her passion is contagious.
Prof. Colwill was a wonderful teacher. She was one of the best I've had this semester and I would highly recommend her class to anyone seeking to learn about American History.
Professor Colwill is passionate about this subject and it comes across in every class. "Elizabeth Colwill is enthusiastic about the course material."- This one in particular merits an option higher than strongly agree.
Professor Colwill is a great instructor. She encourages class discussion and encourages me to look outside the box, and see what you really needed to know. She utilizes not just lecture, but also film material to teach the class. She sets her expectations high, but when it comes down to students struggling, she is open to compromise. Overall, she is a great professor who gives you what is worth of your time in the class.
She is a highly qualified and skilled instructor. I appreciate the amount of concern she exhibits for her students. She seems to genuinely care about our educational goals and well-being. The course is demanding, yet she is very willing to help see us through it.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I loved the discussions in class because it offered a new idea or interpretation of what we covered.
Inclusion of song and film, hearing the Library of Congress interviews.
The maps were nice because it made the reading easier to do and follow along with.
I enjoyed class most when it focused on America opposed to South America or the Caribbean; however that just reflects my own interests. I also enjoyed the more artistic course materials rather than the historical texts, especially the spirituals.
I enjoyed the discussions.
Even though there was quite a bit of reading, I really enjoyed it and I am glad we focused on individual stories rather than an overview of history.
Class discussions on the readings (which were frequent).
i loved teh is course...
The class discussions, the acting parts, the analyzing the films, and the quiz.
The course forced me to rethink the way I think about slavery, freedom, and the human psyche.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
I hate the maps because they were so tedious! I preferred to have reading quizzes than the maps.
Gone with the wind, conceptual maps (although they are a helpful tool for discussion and critical thinking it's hard to get them done), Having to get through huge sections of afro-latino voices in a short amount of time.
The large amount of reading. It would have been nice to be spaced out throughout the week instead of just being due on tuesday.
It took me awhile to get into the class material in the beginning of the semester that were fact and historical based. I would have preferred more sources of academic theory rather than sources of pure facts and data.
Too much reading assignments.
Nothing I can think of.
I don't like to analyze art so if I had to choose something that would be it.
The massive readings. The readings were great because I gained a lot of knowledge from it, however, it just comes down to the reader herself. Iam a student who had to struggle and pull through classes and working two jobs to pay for school and living expenses.
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
I really liked this course but it does require more time than expected but in the end it was worth it.
I've enjoyed this course a lot. Prof. Colwill's energy made getting through heavy material an intriguing and stimulating experience.
Wonderful course, I would recommend it to anyone.
Overall, I enjoyed this course. My own preference for American focused studies led to my own disengagement of materials focused outside of America; however I understand their importance. I greatly enjoyed Closer to Freedom by Camp and wished we engaged with materials that made their own theoretical arguments as Camp's book did rather than asserting historical facts.
It's a bit difficult for science majors just because there's so much reading and the writing is different.
It was one of the best history course I've ever taken. It taught me a lot about American History that unfortunately has been left out of public grade school education.
I just watched 12 Years a Slave recently and I know that the experience I had watching it was different than most viewers. I feel like I had a genuine understanding of all of the settings and concepts of the movie. Countless times I found myself noticing things (big and small) and thinking "we learned about that." Of perhaps greater importance I understand that this movie and the history of U.S slavery is just a fraction of the story of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. I would recommend this class to anyone regardless of their interests.
Excellent
I loved the course, it added so much to my knowledge about this topic, and it also made me think outside of the box when it comes to a lot of things we do in life.
It's a high quality course that helped make me a stronger student.
18. Other comments:
More frequent use of works of art or excerpts from novels, poetry, etc. that reference the particular part of history we are talking about or show its modern day ramifications would be helpful.
I enjoyed the class and I'm glad I took it.
this course shed light on slavery, its darkest secrets both known and unknown,
GREAT CLASS TO TAKE AND WILL RECOMMEND TO FRIENDS AND OTHERS.
Thank you!

15. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
One of the best professors I've worked with and learned from. She's clearly very passionate about what she does and that's very inspiring as a student.
She is a wonderful professor who inspires critical thinking and creative expression in her students. I hope to become just this kind of professor in my own career!
Positive. Loved her discussions and views about things, she was very knowledgable about the topics and it was a pleasure to have her as professor
Excellent
Dr. Colwill is very genuine. I always look forward to her class because she is always in a good mood and encourages me to do better and actively participate in her class. Dr. Colwill values everyone's opinion which promotes a positive environment.
I love her!! She is easy to talk to and connects deeply with each of her students. She is an inspiring and thought-provoking instructor.
Colwill is an amazing educator! She provided valuable insight and encouraged me to look at subjects in different lenses. She is extremely knowledgeable, yet is able to articulate ideas in understanding fashion. I'm honored to have been her student.
Professor Colwill demonstrated such professionalism throughout the course. I respected her in so many ways and loved the way she preached about all of the readings in our class. Having a teacher be so dedicated to her subject really helped me learn a great deal.
She has an amazing voice. She is beautiful, inspiring, and a very smart woman. I enjoy hearing her speak. She is a living example of women empowerment.
above and beyond excellent. Professor Colwill was amazing. I am so grateful for her ability to create a comfortable and open environment that welcomed honest discussions of the world around us. I think she made us all a little braver by creating a forum for us to explore our own histories. Wish I could take a thousand more classes with her.
Professor Colwill is an excellent teacher and my only critique is that she expects way too much from her students. Some say is not fair that she assigned over 10 books in the course of 1 good semester. She has her right to assign pop quizzes but I know my colleagues and I agree that her quizzes are not only a surprise but it is also difficult.

19. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I really enjoyed the class conversation, and the final creative presentations!
I loved the creative writing project! Unlike other English courses I've taken at UH, this class really allows me to express myself, even within the limits of an assignment.
I loved the literature and class discussions
The way she taught the course.
Class discussions. I love hearing my classmates reactions to things we have read the night before.
Every aspect of this course was enjoyable. I loved the class discussion, the assigned literary pieces, and the opportunity to write creatively and deeply connect with both myself and others.
I loved class discussions about the readings.
I really enjoyed all of the touching literature, essays, novels, and poetry we read.
I love the creative writing assignment because it gave students the opportunity to express a part of their own histories. I was so moved by the individual expression of each student.
20. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
I can't think of anything!
The fact that it was 9 in the morning.
Paper writing, but that goes for any college student.
The large amount of reading.
The reading can be somewhat overwhelming! I would love to really emerge myself in the reading, but I have other things in my personal life and other school work that needs my attention too
I thought there was a lot to read especially combined with my other classes.
The poetic, passionate, and beautiful presentations.
The quizzes. But only because I never do well on them no matter how much reading I've done
Some of the books she assigned were great and thought provoking some are not. She should focus more on the quality of the texts and discussions instead of the quantity. She move through books so quick that by the time I finally resonated the techniques and messages from the book we are already on the next one and it's the same cycle over and over again.

This course is an excellent entre into women's literature in the Americas.
AMAZING
Positive. I loved this class and would recommend it to Anyone
Great
I am very pleased I took Dr. Corwill's class, I have learned so much and I have gained a greater appreciation for Women issues
I loved this class. It was by far one of the best courses I've taken at UH.
Amazing! I really appreciated all the themes we covered in each of our readings.
This course is amazing! It changed my life for the better!
I love this course. It should be available every semester.
23. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
I honestly can't think of any way it could be improved.
Maybe a little more time to comlete the readings
Lessen the reading materials and more disscussion. Some of the discussion were cut off due to time discussions.
I thought the themes we learned in class could definitely have been shortened.
I have no complaints!
Less reading so we have more time to dig into the layers of what we do read.
24. Other comments:
Thank you for a indeed up semester!

I really enjoyed this class. I learned a lot and it challenged me.
Thank you for an amazing semester professor Colwill, I was very fortunate to have you as a professor, I wish everyone could take your class and experience someone as inspiring as yourself. I learned a lot about myself over the course of this semester - something that I would have missed out on had I not taken WS 445. Also, thank you for sharing the lovely reading assignments with our class. Everything about this class has encouraged me to continue writing. :)
Thank you so much Professor!

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
She is fantastic. She knows her subject very well and sets high standards for her students. Each class we do is different and she is so well prepared. She is available for consultation when ever we have a problem and goes the extra mile to help her students. I am so happy I took this class. What I learned will stay with me forever.
that she is a wonderful and inspiring professor who helped me greatly improve my essay writing and critical thinking skills in addition to challenging me with invigorating and educational reading and writing assignments.
Grat women, great teacher, and an amazing communicator. She taught class more than perfect and had us involved at all times. I inspire to be a professor like her.
That she was a wonderful professor to have. The course topics were emotionally and intellectually intense but she ensured that we were able to get better acquainted with them. I really enjoy classes that surround cultural plights but it is the attitude of the professor that truly "makes or breaks it" for me. Her passion for the course was inspiring and it caused me to take an active interest in the topics we covered. She is most definitely one of the professors that I will remember long after i've graduated.
she is awesome!
Professor Colwill is one of the best Professors and Teachers I have ever had. She is so inspired in her own research field, that you can see that inspired attitude when she taught this course. She expects a lot of her students, but she makes every opportunity for them to meet/and or exceed her standards (i.e., always open for discussion of assignments, great use of technological communication via email or Laulima, always writing detailed feedback on our written assignments). Overall, Professor Colwill is an ideal professor. She brought meaning to historical events, that not many Professors are able to do.
Great teacher, very helpful, enthusiastic about the subject matter
Professor Colwill has a firm grasp and a passion for the course material. This translates into a fascinating class! She was available to discuss new ideas, meet outside of class, and She communicated clearly and effectively.
She is an excellent professor! She is extremely knowledgeable about her subjects, encourages everyone to express their opinion, and she caters to students' different learning styles. She is professional and very easy to talk to. She's energetic and always organized.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
She didn't just lecture. Each class was something new. People talked about the subject even when she wasn't in the classroom.
The heavy emphasis on daily discussions provided an indispensable part of the course and added a dimension that is sadly lacking in other classes.
All of it. the class decisions, her structure. everything.
I really enjoyed the fact that this course dispelled a lot of the notions that high school left me. I believe that history has a deeper meaning and nothing should be taken at face value. This course embodied that.
i enjoy doing the maps because they certainly did help enagage in class discussions and it brings up other topics and issues.
I loved that the class was primarily discussion-based. I also loved that Professor Colwill used different types of group activities (i.e., role playing, powerpoint, watching film clips, debates, etc.) to promote discussion-based class sessions.
Atlantic Creoles, Many Thousand Gone, Mary Prince, Afro-Latino voices Class discussions were lively and engaging. Professor Colwill obviously cares a great deal for the subject and does an excellent job conveying that knowledge to students.
I enjoyed everything about the course. The texts brought up new ideas, the lectures supported the texts, and class discussion allowed for the presentation of new ideas. Additionally, the usage of different forms of resources allowed for a richer understanding of the course material.
I enjoyed the readings and the class discussions.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
We had to buy 9 books.
The weekly concept maps aided my learning immensely but having them due on tuesdays made them difficult to keep up with with my schedule.
None of it.
I didn't like that we had so much reading to do. I didn't like it but honestly it was necessary to understand the topics we covered.
n/a
I be a long memoried woman , Alvin Ailey Revelations, Beloved , Rough Crossings The amount of books required for purchase (grade would suffer for not having them in class) was a little bit ridiculous (more than all my other classes combined). Even with out requiring the purchase of the books which likely could have been found online or shared by students, the weekly required reading was more than I expect most people were willing to complete for a 3 unit course.
Nothing!
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
This has been one of the best courses I've ever taken.
I recommend the course to anyone, though Professor Colwill did such a wonderful job that I have trouble imagining the course without her.
Great.
It is intellectually challenging but i truly learned a lot from this course
One of the best Professors I've ever had. One of the best courses I have ever taken.
Great course, challenging and thought provoking. Although the required reading were both mentally and monetarily taxing.
One of the best history courses I've taken!
This course broadened my understanding of slavery and the way slaves resisted. It complicated the usual cookie-cutter history we get in high school and I wish that every student would have the opportunity to take this course.
18. Other comments:
I find myself deeply lamenting the end of the course as it really stood out in educational quality from any class I have taken before. It has been an very enjoyable part of my weekly schedule and I hope to have the opportunity to take another class with Professor Colwill in the future.
She is a wonderful women, I appreciate her encouragement and overall love for the course. Thanks for the Great semester!
Thank you Professor Colwill for a wonderful semester! I hope that I will be able to take another one of your courses in the future!
Great teacher great course, perhaps this course should be Writing Intensive as it already requires ten 1-2 page concept maps and three 3-4 page papers.

13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
This course was one of the most challenging courses that I have ever taken--both in scope and depth of material and that it was my first time encountering these discussions. It completely opened up flood gates of new intellectual pursuits and ideas that I would not have encountered on my own. The rigorous structure of assignments/presentations and reading selection allowed us as a class to dive deeply into the topics--I will remember this class for a long time.
very enthusiastic in educating students, and very talented in teaching about difficult concepts and works.
she is an excellent professor who is very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject material and her fields in general. She challenges her students to read widely and think critically. Professor Colwill is always available to help students pursue their projects, and provides much support in their academic pursuits. She is one of the best professors I have taken a course from in the department of American Studies.
She is incredibly knowledgeable and set high standards for her students. It's easy to tell Professor Colwill is very passionate about her work and it makes the course content more meaningful. She is also very approachable and supportive.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Dr. Colwill's flexibility and passions to teach.
I really enjoyed the class discussions and many of the texts that we read during the semester. We had a wonderful class this semester and I appreciated the contributions of class members. I liked being able to facilitate discussion for a few weeks to be able to dig into material more deeply. The conceptual maps each week were helpful in understanding the texts that we read. This course was challenging in a good way, and I learned a great deal about intersectional approaches to scholarship.
Class discussion. It was always helpful to dive into the literature and hear what other students got out of it. Most of the readings were interesting.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
I liked and disliked the weekly conceptual map at the same time. I learned alot by this, but at the same time, I felt that it was not fair especially for the foreign students who need a lot more time than native speakers to understand the text and also write something dense. Yet, there were so much stuff I was able to learn because I had this painful task every week.
This course did have a lot of work and many requirements. It was sometimes challenging to get all of the reading and conceptual maps done every week. Some of the readings were difficult to get through.
The conceptual maps. I found them stressful.
17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Great.
it was excellent and I learned a great deal. I appreciated the structure of the course as well as the readings and ideas presented during the course. I would definitely take another class from Professor Colwill.
While, my main focus isn't on the African diaspora, I learned a lot of valuable knowledge that can be applied or can inform my personal interests.

15. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
She believes that everyone cares about the what the readings are about, some of us are just there to fulfill a requirement.
Professor Colwill is an extremely amazing professor. She took the time and showed real concern for her students not just myself. Her approach to teaching is student centered and her assignments were engaging and inspirational. I can't say enough good things about Professor Colwill. I have recommended her courses to classmates that is how highly I regard her teaching style, care and community building abilities.
Elizabeth is a great professor, she took the time to meet with me as often as I needed. She is very understanding considering my hardships that I was experiencing this semester. In addition to her compassion and love for teaching Elizabeth led her classes in a way that did not come across as "power struggle" meaning she ran the class as if she was an equal individual. She created a safe environment that made it easy to talk and discuss topics without judgement being made. I enjoyed Elizabeths class very much as well as the knowledge she was able to give me.
an excellent professor with high standards in regards to classroom participation and intellectual interaction. She wants to know that you are absorbing the material as opposed to instructors that are knowledable yet you feel that they are talking at you.
Great teacher. Knows what she is talking about and is very engaging. Great course.

19. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The small size.
The choice of books, the final creative project, and analysis paper.
I liked the fact that I could walk into a class without being scared to say something. In addition to the creativity of the course, it made the material much easier to comprehend.
She held everyone accountable for the reading assignments which, as a person that likes to come to class prepared, made me feel that there were nice classroom discussions. She gave thorough background on all the authors covered so we better understood the origin and ethos of the texts covered.
Discussions and the reading material.
The books chosen were a great read and the class discussions were always pleasant.
20. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

None
I did not like the additional note taking that we were given. It is understandable to take notes to be able to recall what happened in the novel that we were currently reading at the time;however, with the writing assignments and reading assignments we were already assigned I felt overwhelmed.
There were too many writing assignments for a non writing intensive class.
Nothing really.
I had no problems, it was my favorite course in the semester.

Excellent!!! Life changing!!! So glad I took this course.
This course was great. I would encourage many future UH and current UH students to take this course. It is an eye-opening course that helps see life in different perspectives.
An excellent survey of women's literature. I really got a sense of what women go through to get there stories out, as well as, why it's important for me to get mine out.
Wonderful course
A+ would take again

23. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
Less writing. more in-depth discussion about the books.
None
This course could be improved by providing less novels. Having ten novels and extra online readings are overwhelming. I have had courses with ten novels but there was no online readings. Overall the course is fine.
It is well organized already.

Thank you professor Colwill for your inspiring course, your kind words, and support. I'm just so blessed to have taken this course and got to know you this semester. It has been a rough semester but just knowing that there are faculty that truly care about their students learning and well being is comforting. I have learned so much from you in such a short amount of time. I look forward to next semester. Mahalo Nui Loa! Shannon
Prof. Colwill was extremely supportive of my special situation. I greatly appreciated her knowledge, as well as, her compassion and extra consideration. I would love to take a class from Prof. Colwill in the future.

that she is an excellent teacher with a firm grasp of the material.
that she is an enthusiastic teacher. She is clear and thorough in her expectations for the class. She is approachable and easy to get in contact with. Colwill makes you feel like she is invested in you as a student.
Betsy was an amazing and inspiring graduate teacher, and I feel this class rejuvenated my passion for scholarship by creating space for passionate and rigorous conversation and reading. In her short lectures, she was incredibly prepared and articulate. In her classroom planning she was generous, encouraging us to speak and listen well to each other, and to bring our own interests and expertise into the discussions. She was tireless in her support of our individual projects in and out of class. As a PhD student, I can say that I have never had such a consistently challenging and exciting graduate class as this one.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
This is actually a very challenging course but very rewarding also. I was exposed to ideas and theories I might not have otherwise been exposed to. So basically, the exposure to many different ideas and perspectives.
I liked the student led seminars. It was exciting to hear everyone's research interests and how they related them to their course work. This assignment also allowed for a creative space for the students to explore their topics.
Careful and creative structure of each class. Often graduate classes follow the same formula of "read and discuss" but you asked us to interact with the materials in many different ways, that helped us reach insight and connection we wouldn't have otherwise. I also appreciated the success of having students teach their own sections in the course. Teachers often plan this idea in, but for this to really succeed, it needs to be committed to wholeheartedly, and early on. Thank you for the time and trust it took to make this part of the class work.

17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
This is actually a very challenging course but very rewarding also. I highly recommend this course to others.
that it is a great resource in understanding power and representation. Colwill did an amazing job in expanding my knowledge on this subject through many different yet related topics.
I left the course feeling that I had a better sense of cultural theory in historical context and in conversation with other theories and movements. I also felt that I had a much more nuanced and complex understanding of "culture" that was grounded in wideranging real examples. I feel much more capable to discuss and analyze cultural production in meaningful ways, with students and colleagues. I feel like I have grown so much, and am deeply grateful to everyone in the class.
