25. Comment on the instructor's professional attitude and behavior.
All her communications with me were very professional. I really felt that she was open to all my questions, and took my concerns into consideration.
Didn't really talk to her much so I don't know.
Not sure because it was an online class, but the class was very organized and when I emailed a question I got a good answer so she was helpful!
Very professional, answered all emails that I sent promptly
From her lectures, she seemed very professional and knew what she was talking about.
Very professional and available for questions and help. Quick responses to emails.
She was helpful for me and I enjoyed that
I think Prof. Banna composes herself in a very professional manner.
Understandable
She is very friendly and prompt when I was confused about an assignment.
Since this was an online course, there was a very limited interaction with the professor. However, from the discussion posts and from what was expected of us in this course, her attitude and behavior was very professional.
She is passionate about the course and gives her students opportunities to improve.
very helpful and responsive
Professor Banna was professional and graded assignments quickly.
She had a great attitude.
Dr. Banna is extremely friendly and she also helped me a lot with whatever questions I had about course topics. Not to mention she answered my emails very quickly also.
Very good; encouraged my learning
26. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
Some of the modules referred me to certain pages in the book, but the material wasn't covered on those pages. It would be good to ensure that the pages that are referenced are up to date with the current text book.
Weekly reminders of what's due?
I was happy with the course and the way it was set up online. I was able to find what I needed and the information we learned was helpful on the midterms and exams.
More interaction with the discussion forums. We were able to post, but the teacher did not interact with the posts.
It would be useful if the most important ideas are made clearer to see.
Maybe to have more informative simple explanations on the powerpoint for each topic that relays what you really want us to know. Also some of the facts between the powerpoints and the book differed such as life expectancy.
For a 6 week course, it was planned out perfectly
I think due date reminders via text message would be awesome! Since it is summer time I have trouble reminding myself to check my email account.
Review for quiz
I would probably like more announcements on due dates coming up.
Overall, I thought this course was well organized and the workload was fair. One minor suggestion I have is to maybe post more video lectures.
More visual aid on important concepts
I would like her to send out weekly reminders, or add reminders on the announcement page on laulima.
Some links didn't work in a few of the modules.
I don't think she needs to alter anything about her teaching styles.
I think that having the audio helped a lot as opposed to just having a powerpoint presentation to read myself. Having a person talk to me and explain difficult topics to me really helped.
Be more clear about the deadlines at the very beginning of the course; first due date was on a Wednesday, then was on Fridays after that. People may not have realized the change.
27. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....

24. Comment on the instructor's professional attitude and behavior.
Very happy and professional
She was very nice and enthusiastic
She is very professional as a professor
She always seems positive and open to questions. Although she verbally expressed being open to answering questions I do recall that we as students are advised to review the questions we got wrong on the midterms to study for the final, except the way they are graded we don't know which questions we got wrong. The lecture notes are often not well organized and do not cover materials on the study guide.
she has a great attitude. she is very knowledgeable and willing to share.
Very enthusiastic
She was always very nice and positive with us.
She is very friendly, funny, and fantastic! I'm always happy to see her pleasant face and she is very engaging throughout the lectures.
Jinan is perky, her voice is loud and understandable, but friendly. She doesn't read ver batim and makes a point to walk from one side to side addressing all of the students.
She was friendly and was able to keep us up for an 8:30 class. Her lectures were engaging and she always related the content to her own life and our lives.
Professional and easy to understand. Friendly as well as helpful and informative to any changes.
Great!
Her attitude and behavior was on point and positive.
Prof. Banna was such a joy. She was always smiling and welcoming to all her students during class. Her excitement about the topic got me excited as well. She felt very real and down to earth and was very friendly. She inspired me every class to want to go deeper into the topic of nutrition.
Professor Banna is very knowledgeable about the subject matter and elaborates on the information presented in her slides. She also brings in and shows pictures of food that pertains to the topic being discussed during that class.
Mrs. Banna is extremely friendly, kind hearted, & funny. I absolutely love, love her as both a person and teacher
Positive attitude always
Dr. Banna expressed a professional attitude as she was always ready for lecture, dressed appropriately, and spoke in standard English language.
She was super sweet.
She is really friendly and makes learning the concept less intimidating. There is a fair amount of content to absorb, but she is always there for you if you need help!
Good!

Professor Banna was enthusiastic during every class about the course material.
Dr. Banna is very enthusiastic and passionate about food science and human nutrition. These traits make learning enjoyable!
Her attitude towards the class is great. She considers the entire class as a unit and discourages side conversations. However, her personable attitude also invites students to participate and ask questions.
Jinan Banna's attitude is pleasant. She is always happy and energetic which makes class fun.
She's passionate about what she does
She's professional and has good behavior
Very friendly, and approachable. Passionate about teaching and definitely a positive person.
Professor Banna has a positive attitude because she collaborates with the students whenever they have any issues. She gives information and solutions if you have trouble with the assignments, quizzes, or exams.
She is a very nice teacher and she tries very hard to be nice to her studets
Professional but often gets personal
Proffesor Banna is like a ethusiastic mother, she is a professional and still shows that she is passionate about the subject and teaching students
She is very professional and knows what she is talking about but is very polite and kind when discussing it. She has a great attitude and I love learning from her.
very nice
Professor Banna was very polite and sweet while still upholding a level of professionalism. She provided a welcome classroom that made me feel comfortable and eager to learn.
Enthusiastic and informative
Not helpful enough
Really positive and enthusiastic about different food sources which makes learning more interesting.
She was very friendly and fun to listen to.
Very professional but also friendly and approachable.
She was very enthusiastic and very passionate about what she was teaching us. I also enjoyed that she was very interactive with the lecture class even when there were a lot of us. I also liked how she stressed important things during class.
She was a very up beat person and kept class interesting with personal stories which made it easier to relate to the course material
Professor Banna is a friendly instructor who knows her material and tries to help us understand the course.
Professor Banna is a delight to have. Always in a good mood and willing to help.
She's very energetic and has a positive attitude towards things. Her voice is not monotone so you will have an easier time paying attention in class.
She is always happy and perky even though the class was early in the morning.
She is awesome.
She was very enthusiastic when teaching, which made me engage more in her lessons. She was very informative and taught professionally. All in all, she helped me learn a lot about nutrition throughout the semester.
This is my first semester at Hawaii and found professor Banna to be outstanding. She was very friendly and knowledgeable about the material. One of my favorite teachers.
She is very accommodating and helpful.
Shows enthusiasm and makes the class interesting and fun to learn
She keeps everything very professional; however, to the extent where she is impersonal and unapproachable.
She's super bubbly. Her energy is contagious and makes the learning environment very favorable.
Really professional and passionate of her teachings
25. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
Review before a test the lecture beofre
Sometimes there was material on the exam not covered in the slide shows. And wording on the tests could be simplified and clarified
I think it would be helpful if the practice tests were a little more similar to the actual exams
nothing
More up to date gradebook.
More displays
None :)
Giving more extra credit opportunities.
She could use give us another assignment were we can are required to style our own MyPlate.
None.
Having more homework to boost grade
none
It would be better to put the polling questions at the end of the presentation rather than right after the information pertaining to the question is given.
She's a great story teller and I really wish she would tell more of her person stories that relate to the class topic (adolescent nutrition, etc)
More clarity on what will be on tests, more correlation between what is on the study guide and what is on the tests
Spending more time on certain topics. Although we use a textbook, I think most students would appreciate if this course offered optional worksheets we could view on Laulima on the really detailed sections (i.e. the Chapters about Vitamins and Minerals)
The practice exams did not help with the actual exams.
Maybe provide more extra credit opportunities or more mini quizzes!
Try to relate the material to students so it's easier for us to understand.
n/a
I feel that she did not make herself very available for students who tried reaching out in hopes of finding help with difficult course material.
n/a
None can be made.
Jinan Banna can improve this class by having a review session before the exam as a class.
Move it into a different building please. That's was mainly why no one came to class
Professor Banna's teaching style is very well organized. She uploads the power points right before we start a new lesson. However, I would suggest to decrease a few slides because I think there were many slides to take notes on and too much studying. I would also suggest to make the study guides more with details and answers instead of questions.
She teaches way too fast!!! she should slow down so that people who are taking notes while she is giving the lecture can keep up. She should also go in more details when she is going through some slides. Also her individual slides don't seem to be in a order that makes it easy to follow along with.
Have more options for extra credit that don't require money.
more interactive ways to get the class involved and better ways to get extra credit.
I would add more iClicker questions to see if students understand the material properly.
I do not have any, I thought the course was great.
None at this time
Making more assignments, and extra credit available for students. Making the tests more easy to pass (in other words concentrate on actual info we will be tested on, instead of simple irrelevant things)
I felt that a few exams did not match well to the study guides which was the only problem I actually had.
The study guides and practice exams do not fully help with preparing for the test. I can answer those questions, but had a lot of difficulty on the actual exam
To not read off the slides as much.
Nothing, I think she did really well and included many different activities like videos and the iClicker.
Reads off of the slides a little too much so its easy to get distracted
Just doing the study guide and practice test sometimes just doesn't feel adequate enough. In my psychology class, the TA would hold a study review session where we would go over the materials that will be on the test and students were able to ask any questions they had. When there's something I'm not sure about It's easier to ask in person as well.
I think that a study session with a TA or review slides would be nice for exams. She provides us with a study guide and practice exam, but it would be better if we are able to ask questions and review for the test together.
The exams are kind of hard, a lot of things on there are things from the book and not in class
Professor Banna could have engaged more with the audience, getting us more involved. That would have kept me on my toes and helped me to learn.
n/a
Nothing at all.
It sounds like a small issue but in reality, showing enthusiasm and personality during lectures you're interested in will help us to focus and be interested in what you have to say.
I think everything is already very good.
26. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Her class seems easy but the test material is way harder and her lectures don't really give you the information
She was a good, fair teacher and was very nice
She is great and made learning interesting
Actual teaching: 6.75/10 Positive, supporting tone: +1 Adheres to the syllabus: +1 Overall: 8.75/10
GREAT COURSE
She is a very enthusiastic and knows her material well
Great teacher, very understanding of the material!
Amazing! I love how she teaches and I hope to keep in contact with her.
She cool.
She is an enthusiastic teacher and I would recommend my peers to take this class from her.
Great professor. Clear and easy to understand. Keeps students updated via email and we'll as class. Let's students know important parts that will be on exam.
Good!
great professor, would recommend her class to a friend !
Great teacher. Would take another class from her in a heartbeat.
Professor Banna teaches to meet everyone's needs. Concepts are put into simple terms that makes it easy for everyone to understand. The content comes across clearly.
Wonderful teacher and person. Sooooo very sweet, kind, warm, friendly, and entertaining.
Good!
Dr. Banna is a terrific women and I enjoy her lectures. She is very passionate about her career and the topic of nutrition. During lecture she gave lots of information but also gave lots of examples.
that she is a knowledgeable professor.
Excellent professor. She is a strong advocate of consuming your vegetables and of Costco! I love the stories she is comfortable with sharing with the class, they really help make it a great day and are relevant to what we are learning (which makes retaining content easier). She really wants to make you have something to take away from this course, and in my opinion you should! Your overall health is important, and what she teaches you will help you along the way!

She is a wonderful professor!
A fun and informative teacher that cares about her students and the choices they make. She is open to new ideas but has a strong sense as to what she wants to teach.
that this class is very fun but difficult. There is a lot of studying required but it is a class worth going to.
Good
Excellent.
great because she attempts to use logical reasoning in making decisions and solve problems. Her decisions are well thought out. She produces accurate and well-presented presentation.
She is a really nice teacher and i learned a lot in her class, although her lecturing may not have been the best.
very knowledgeable and loves what she teaches.
Pretty knowledgeable- teacher who is very enthusiastic
Shes a great professor, would take her class again
She is a kind person who is influential and a fabulous teacher.
very good. knows what shes doing
Great professor. Very knowledgeable and great teaching skills.
Excellent instructor
The class needs improvement
Great professor, I can tell she loves what she does, and it's good to learn fron her.
She is a great professor that stresses the importance of nutrition and living a well balanced life.
Great teacher!
Great professor and knew what she was talking about and was very passionate about helping her students and getting her message across.
She was a good professor and i learned a lot of new things from her class
Her lectures are quite vague compared to the multiple choice questions on the test. She's a nice instructor but I would advise future students to read and study the book over her lectures.
Professor Banna is absolutely a wonderful person! She always comes to class excited to teach and willing to answer students questions to the best of her ability.
good
I really liked her as a professor because she made the classroom feel comfortable to be in.
She keeps you engaged with her contagious laugh and silly jokes. Has lots of stories and pics of food to show students places she's been and how it relates to the content
She was a very informative, enthusiastic teacher. She taught directly from the slides and tested on the material she taught. Very good teacher, I would take her again if I can.
A wonderful teacher who cares about what she does and can easily make a students day better.
She's a really great teacher. You can just see her passion for what she teaches.
Awesome professor
I know she knows her stuff but the information was dumped on us and we didn't have time to understand the material, instead we were forced to memorizing it.
Dr. Banna is a great teacher. She is obviously very passionate about nutrition, and it rubs off on her students.
Banna is a great teacher and very mindful

31. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
That the reviews were up and practice tests at the begining og the semster, they could just be more helpful.
I enjoyed learning about nutrition for athletes
personal stories incorporated into teaching
The second assignment helped me change my diet for the healthier and I really appreciate applicable information in classes.
I enjoyed the pregnancy and infancy portion of this course the most
Various information on nutrition
Learning about how to make wise food choices, especially for a college student when finding good healthy food is a struggle!
When we had lectures and she related it to our lives. Also the pictures of her food adventures.
Learning along with PP slides.
Talking about fitness and nutrition
My favorite sections were learning about minerals and vitamins
I looked forward to every lecture. They were never boring.
Planning a diet segment of the class was most interesting to me. The information presented would be helpful to many people to obtain a healthy diet.
her personal stories
Her lectures are innovative.
Real world applications
I enjoyed the lectures and learned more than I thought I would. I also appreciated all of the small extra credit opportunities Dr. Banna provides.
I liked the information that was taught in this course.
I enjoyed the mini quizzes because we could work with others and have mini discussions. Also, Assignment #2 was fantastic. I admit, I am not happy with my nutritional intake results, but it really opened my eyes. It made me see what I can do to help myself and have more control of my overall health and lifestyle!
Learning things about foods and applying it to real life.
n/a
I liked improving my personal health and making my own goals based on the lectures.
Learning about human nutrition.
I liked how the nutrition class covered a lot of different lifestyles: parents, children, athletes, and elderly.
I liked learning about my health and maintaining a healthy body.
Online quizzes
Learning about what certain foods will do to your body in certain amounts, and learning how to look for nutrients in foods that are beneficial
The course that I like the best is Childhood, Adolescence, and Eating Disorders because I was able to understand most of the situations in the topic. I learned the problems and solutions of people through the slides. Also, I liked the video that Professor Banna showed us about introducing new foods to children.
I learned at lot of helpful and applicable things about foods and stuff.
The assignments
The overall topics we covered were very interesting and enlightening.
I enjoyed the lectures. Professor Banna always kept them interesting and related them to real life.
The personal anecdotes
nothing
Applying nutrition to my personal diet.
I liked having the weekly quizzes for extra credit.
The content as well as the assignments.
I liked the different activities. She wasn't just talking the entire time but there were relevant videos and news that she talked about that was relevant to our lives and I liked that she had the iClicker where she had the whole class involved.
I liked learning how to balance my meals
I like the weekly llama quizzes because they were nice little refreshers. I also think professor Banna should actually count the iClicker questions as attendance (regardless of the score).
Parts of this course were great because it overlaps with things I learn in my course major specific course.
I like the weekly quizzes
Learning about a "healthy diet" is what I liked best about the course. Balancing my diet to hit all the food groups so I can absorb a solid amount of nutrients is what I learned, and I like that I actually learned beneficial information.
Everything was pretty interesting and beneficial.
I liked when Professor Banna would bring examples of different types of healthy foods that she likes to eat. Which gave me ideas for my own diet.
I like the sports nutrition portion of the course. It's more relevant to the kind of knowledge I want to obtain.
32. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The weight of the assignments and tests
I thought every topic was pretty interesting
iclicker questions
Applying reading to notes to study guides was often a hassle and I regularly could not access slides or study guides because of Laulima's unreliability but that is no fault of the professor.
some of the test questions were hard but still doable
Liked all
Nothing!
I disliked the first assignment it was confusing for me.
None.
Vitamins and minerals

None.
mini quizzes
Her helpful demeanor
Tests
One aspect of the course that I like the least is that the Final exam is cumulative.
The exams were harder than any of the quizzes or assignments.
There really is nothing I did not like about this class.
Exams would contain a lot of material that weren't on the study guides or practice exams
n/a
I did not like that exams were such a singular part of the grade, I feel that memorization instead of retention takes place in cases like that, which doesn't lead to effective learning. We had assignments, but exams seemed to weigh heavily and the assignments didn't seem to make a difference in the overall grades.
Calculating daily intake for Assignment 2. I understand why it was important for the assignment, but for me, it was difficult to calculate because I didn't prepare my meals.
I wish there were more videos to diversify how we learned. More activities such as the breakdown of food would be nice.
I did not like the exams because they were extremely hard.
It's so far. All the way in BioMed
The course that I do not like is the Human Digestive System because there were many steps of food processing in the stomach. I was really confused of all the absorptions, digestions, and breakdowns, etc. Also, as we moved on to proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates, things started to get even more confusing. Through these topics, I think there are too many names and functions.
her way of lecturing, she teaches too fast and is not that organized in the order she teaches things in her presentations
Lectures were sometimes boring
I didn't like how early the course was and how there was a lot of online assignments.
i wish the tests had more points. i feel like if you only miss a few on a test, its hard to keep an A
Exams
None at this time
The tests
Learning specific microbial reactions that happen when food is consumed.
I foresee the final exam to be difficult because I had a difficult time with the understanding and comprehending the individual exams.
The lecture slides could be dull at times.
Nothing, I think she was very informative.
i didn't like learning about how all the food we intake is processed through the body.
I disliked the lectures.
N/A
I am not a good test taker, and didn't do too well on the tests, they were kinda hard
I did not like making up at 8 in the morning every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. That is the only complaint that I have.
n/a
I don't really care for large lecture classes cause it just felt like I was being lectured at times. It would be cool if this course would be more hands on.
The exams did not follow your practice tests which hurt me a lot in the end.
Nothing really comes to mind. The course was great.
33. Other comments:
I enjoyed this class
Good class, be able to self-teach is need be, do the reading before the lecture.
I'm recommending this course to my friends because Professor Bamma is amazing! And the course material is very relevant for anyone!
Thank u!
The weekly quizzes were helpful in touching up on a few points we needed to learn. I think it would have been nicer though if they were due on a Friday night rather than a Sunday night. Having things due on a day that we didn't have lecture was a little weird for me.
One of the nicest, sweetest, kindest, most helpful professors that I've met. Such an amazing person
One of the prettiest professors.
No
Overall, this course is great and provides lots of opportunities for students to learn and be flexible with grading (i.e. having mini quizzes, assignments, and online quizzes instead of just exams).
Amazing class, I wish she taught some of the upper division courses! Other than that, I will miss having her as my Food Science and Human Nutrition professor.

I wasn't a fan of the structure of this class and if reflecting on others grades it would be interesting to see how everyone else did with this learning style.
Thank you Dr. Banna.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
The course presented valuable education material that can be utilized in situations outside of class.
The most valuable part of the course was completing the final project. By developing a plan to initiate nutrition education we were able to apply the concepts that were taught in class.
N/A
how to design nutrition education material for various types of audience which is very important in the nutrition field!
Learning how to read research papers.
I found the work that we did connecting with the community to be valuable.
The group work. Interacting and practicing the different forms of nutrition education really help understand each concept.
It gave a good aspect of what community nutrition is about and how a project goes around to being completed.
Overall, the framework for understanding how to choose appropriate nutrition education materials was helpful
My experience of working with my group's key informant.
Group project time. Big improvement from 451.
What I found most valuable and helpful about the course is real world examples Dr. Banna would use in class regarding things we were learning.
I liked this course, but it is very similar to FSHN 451. The 452 course, although is a continuation of FSHN 451, felt repetitive and a lot of the information did not seem new. I like that they are combining this course to FSHN next semester.
I think the group project was most valuable. We were able to use our knowledge from class and create an education material for the community to use. I think it was great to try and reach out to the community so we can understand what others outside of UH are thinking about nutrition.
There were a lot of good points on how to properly educate diverse groups of people.
Applying what we've learned in class to creating a nutrition education material for a target population
The lectures and the review session for exams. The lectures provided a good overview of the chapter readings. The exam review sessions helped me do well on the exams. Also, we had a lot more time/opportunities to work on our group projects. This was very helpful and much needed.
the group project.
N/A
The extensive time allowed to complete the project for this class. The videos included in the lectures were also very insightful.
interactive activities to apply lecture concepts
Going out into the community to work with our populations to understand their nutrition problem.
I found the activities most valuable and helpful because we were given the opportunity to discuss with our neighbors in applying the learned concepts as well as receiving immediate feedback from the students and teacher to confirm correct usage of the learned concepts.
Working in groups was one major aspect of the course that I thought was helpful because I developed good communication skills. Keeping up with deadlines and brain storming with others was a useful skill that I think will help me in the future. Dr. Banna's enthusiasm and experience in community dietetics were also very helpful throughout this course. Lastly, the videos were entertaining and useful.
Creating education material allowed us to be creative and put some of the principles we used into action. I enjoyed this project and feel that I would be more equipped to create education materials in the future.
Hands-on activities such as the creation of our nutrition education materials. I enjoyed being creative with the project more than I thought I would have.
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
Some parts in the material was hard to understand.
The lectures were presented well and gave a good topical explanation of the topics. Compared to the exams, the lectures and review sessions were very vague. The exams did not reflect the general depth of the lectures. I would always leave class feeling like I grasped the presented concepts, and would supplement the lectures with studying at home. But I did not feel like the exams were a strong reflection of what was taught in class.
N/A
Group presentations on research papers.
The amount of time devoted to this class was egregious. Each day Dr. Banna lectured for 30 minutes or so and then had some sort of activity for us. I did not find this helpful or valuable to my learning experience. This whole course should be combined with FSHN451 to maximize our time. We spent a lot of time outside of class working with our groups which would be better if we met more often in class.
Some of the lecture slides did not make sense when studying for exams.
This class could have been taught in a matter of several hours total.
The actual projects were hard. There wasnt much organization. My key informant for my project had nothing to do with my target population. What they need to do is interview these key informants first and make sure they fit with the topic at hand.
A lot of the information was redundant or excessively complex (ex, way too many flow charts). I am glad that this will be combined with 451 in the future because I feel that the majority of the information could have easily been taught over several lectures rather than spread out over a whole semester.
That we weren't given more interaction with our target population to develop our projects. If the main focus of the course is to develop the projects, then it would beneficial to find key informants for the traget populations that knows what is exactly being asked of them and can provide the time and experience for the students.
Key informant. It seems that there were a few groups who didn't have access to their target population making the nutrition education material invalid.
The slides were pretty vague.
A lot of the information felt repetitive to last semester. I like when there are guest speakers from the community that talk about their own personal experiences too.
I think everything is valuable but they least helpful for me are the powerpoints. I think the group discussions and class discussions are a better way to improve our understanding of how to improve our knowledge of nutrition education.
I think a lot of the terminology was a little confusing. Memorizing the different stages/models/mediators was probably the most challenging and least useful.
I don't really like the group activities during the lectures.
N/A
Lecture classes were mainly based upon the book, did not learn much.
I did not find the library session helpful.
Study guide did not help study for exams. 2nd exam was very difficult and review for the exam did not help.
Nutrition education has many broad concepts that are all related to each other. I would have liked it if concepts were made simpler; especially on the exams. I would recommend using more examples rather than using questions from the book. That way questions do not seem like they all can have multiple answers that could be right.
Many of the lectures seemed redundant.
I feel like jeapordy review isn't the greatest way to prep for a review, but a whole class day to review is always welcomed

27. Comment on the instructor's professional attitude and behavior.
Professor Banna is very friendly and enthusiastic during class. Her positive behavior makes her easier to ask questions during and after class.
Dr. Banna is very professional and comes to class with a positive attitude.
Very positive!
Enthusiastic in teaching! Very prompt response to emails Always there to help students and provide extra opportunities for students outside of class
She is approachable and enthusiastic.
Dr. Banna is always such a happy and cheerful person so it's always nice to attend her classes. She has always been very helpful when I needed to address an issue. She has a very positive attitude and is very easy to approach.
Great professor and very optimistic and happy.
Very professional. Has a very friendly attitude and is always there when we need her. A bit of a scatter-brain but makes up for it with her knowledge of the subject and her positive attitude.
Dr. Banna is an outstanding professor/lecturer. She is extremely professional, well-spoken, and knowledgeable about the subject. She makes excellent use of materials other than power point slides to drive points home (such as videos, images, etc.), makes eye contact instead of reading from the power points, and elaborates on the information presented in the slides. She is very helpful and demonstrates concern for student comprehension. I was actually surprised by her enthusiasm for the topic, which was quite dry. She is definitely one of the best professors I've had at UH in the past few years.
Always positive.
Very good
She's a great teacher that is extremely nice, positive, and knows a lot about the subject matter.
Dr. Banna is a great professor. She is always open to suggestions for her class and teaches the material in many ways to help suit everyone's needs. She is friendly and easy to talk to in case any students have a question about the material. She always encourages us to network with other dietitians and provides us with opportunities to improve our path through dietetics.
She seems very knowledgeable about the subject matter. She is always professional and friendly, I felt like I could always ask questions. She always gives gentle, constructive criticism - never made me feel incompetent.
Dr. Banna is very friendly and approachable. She is passionate about teaching and always has a wonderful attitude in class.
Nice and organized professor
She is very professional and extremely patient. However, it may be helpful to be more assertive as many times her patience allows the students to talk over her voice. This makes it very difficult for the students that are actually paying attention to the lecture to concentrate.
She is always in a positive mood and is excited to teach the class.
Her attitude and behavior is credible.
Positive
Dr. Banna is very enthusiastic about the course which is really nice to see because it shows that she's truly interested in the subject matter. And it seems that she is always willing to learn new things and ideas about nutrition.
Appropriate.
She's always cheery and positive and I find that very refreshing. I feel like she's open to hearing other people's opinions and she treats students like equals rather than inferior. I respect that.
Very professional, open, and clearly educated
28. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
Intervention should be incorporated in this course. I feel like it would have been a beneficial experience to incorporate the nutrition education materials that were created in class in the community. I also feel like this course could have been combined with the first semester of community nutrition.
N/A
Theory material is hard to grasp. Wording in the exams are pretty brutal...there must be a way to make questions easier to understand because the actual material is not too complicated.
I found Dr. Banna's overall teaching style to be monotonous. I understand the the theory behind activities and group work, but we do the same things each class.
Less lecture slides and more interaction with the class. Group work is always beneficial
interview the key informants first
452 definitely needs to be combined with 451 into one semester-long course. Dr. Banna is excellent and I would not change anything about her teaching style
I think it is a great idea to combine 451 and 452! I found two semesters for these courses not valuable, not that these courses couldn't be valuable.
1) Ensure key informant has patients of target population. 2) Be more specific on what you expect from us 3) Too many broad questions on exam that seem to have arguable answers i.e. T/F it is the responsibility of recipient to partake in active participation, something like that. It could be argued that the educator is responsible to help encourage the learner and it can also be true because the participant chooses whether or not to participate. It's too confusing. A lot of us understand what we are being taught in the big picture but questions like that throw us off and because of it, I heard that a few students were upset with their exam grades.
Course seemed like 451 so kind of pointless
Seems repetitive from last semester's FSHN 451 course.
I think the connections between the students and the key informant should be better. The grading of the presentations could be even more clear.
I think highlighting the important models more would be helpful since they seem to jumble up. Categorizing things would help as well.
The lectures were slow, meaning we only covered a few slides in class and had too many days off from class to meet with groups. And we reviewed stuff that we had learned last semester.
Have specific examples on exams instead of broad questions which the answer could have been multiple things.
Teach something other than lecture slides, sometimes they are redundant and straight from the book
Her teaching style and methods is clear and consistent.
I would suggest possibly having some of the target population already available once the 452 class starts because then they would be prepared to evaluate the nutrition education materials. I understand that some groups had a hard time finding people to evaluate their materials this semester. So this would require more communication with the key informant and having them reach out to the population beforehand.
Make the exams simpler by using examples or highlighting important things better during the lectures.
Bringing community nutrition and nutrition education is a great idea that i believe is already happening. Thank you for giving more group time to work on group projects. The wording on the exams is quite tricky. Do these come from the text materials? They're unclear and confusing. Same goes for the study guides created.
Jeapordy type of review should be substituted for something else? Teaching style is similar to rest of professors in the department
29. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
She is a really good professor.
Dr. Banna is very knowledgeable about the topic and has great experiences to share with the students about her personal experience with community nutrition.
She's great!
good teacher however a hard grader
Excellent professor at UH!!
Tough grader.
Great person and professor who cares about students' learning.
I find Dr. Banna to be quite vague in her explanations and especially on the exams. I study for each and every exam and feel like I know the material. Then when I actually take the test, the answer choices given are different than what we discussed in class or from the book. The way the questions are worded is quite confusing and vague. These are all straightforward concepts but presented in a convoluted way. I have spoken to my classmates and they all agree with me. I understand the material but I my grades do not reflect my knowledge and understanding.
GREAT!
She is a good and intelligent person. But she needs to fix her teaching plan a bit.
Exceptional.
Good person but needs to develop more effective teaching style.
Very good
AWESOME!
I think Dr. Banna is a good professor. She is knowledgeable about for course material and is willing to help her students if they need it. She tries to incorporate different methods of learning from powerpoints, videos, guest lecturers, group discussions and class discussions. She always helps us find opportunties to get involved with the HDA and any volunteering. She helps students be more aware of what is happening in the dietetics world outside of the university.
She is very friendly, very professional, and knowledgeable about her subject area.
Shes a good teacher, I've learned a lot but I can how it'd be better to combine the FSHN 451 and 452 classes because 452 was a bit slow.
Great teacher and motivator
Overall good professor, just material presented needs to be changed.
She is a very encouraging and very knowledgeable in the subject she is teaching.
She is a very good professor, however the class material is very basic.
She is a very good teacher. I enjoy learning in her class.
Good professor, enjoyed semester project
Great teacher with ample amount of experience, enthusiasm, and potential to to grow.
Means well for the students. Enjoyed her positive energy.
Friendly, helpful, willing to talk/discuss/educate

37. Other comments:
There were no guest speakers or exams. Jinan Banna is a critical grader on papers, needs to give better feedback so that improvements on the paper could be made. Lectures were boring.
I really enjoyed the guest lecturers that Dr. Banna invited to our class.
I found the best part of this course was having the chance to develop a project, but I don't feel it was handled professionally. I understand having students experience each step in developing a community education tool, but I didn't appreciate my key informant not understanding their role necessarily or having the time to assist our group. The exam questions tended to be confusing due to the choice of words. I wish the course would have allowed us to actually put our education tool to use in our target community. Espeically since if we spent two semesters on the development.

Sometimes the exam questions seemed confusing even after being explained.
Glad that 451 and 452 are being combined.
Thank you for 2 semesters of a good time!

She remains professional in her attitude and behavior throughout every class. I like it whenever she adds a personal touch to help with lessons whether it's a personal story or a funny joke.
Professor Banna's passion and personal relation with nutrition was always very present in her lectures.
Very appropriate but still welcoming teaching approach, always positive and enthusiastic about the material and students input.
very professional
Very professional and friendly
Very knowledgeable
Very Professional
The instructor definitely knows her criteria well. If anything, I would say doing more interactive things/ trying to make the class more excited about the material.
She is very professional about her teaching but she is very friendly and joking as well which makes the course really fun!
Very good always helpful
Energetic
Professor Banna is well prepaired with all her course content. Her attitude is very professional in every way.
always in a good mood. very passionate about nutrition
Really good! Very funny and really sweet.
Professor Banna is a very kind professor. She is always open to questions anytime during class. You can tell that she is very passionate in her field, and she knows her stuff.
She is very enthusiastic about teaching and nutrition
Very enthusiastic.
Positive attitude, always professional, and friendly.
She's very professional and organized when she lectures.
Jinan was very knowledgable about nutrition. I enjoyed her class because she made learning the material fun and easy to understand. Jinan was friendly and showed that she cared about her students. Whenever we had questions she would gladly take them and try to answer them to the best of her ability.
very professional, happy, always comes to class with a positive attitude
She was very knowledgable and very enthusiastic about the topic.
Very good professor. Clear . Easy to understand. Makes it easy to do well.
Very enthusiastic about the material and tries to make class interesting.
Very engaging and always incorporating nutrition to life.
Good
Professor Banna never goes off topic and she seems to be enthusiastic about her field every single class lecture.
Always kind and punctual, she presents the material well
She's very enthusiastic about teaching nutrition. She tells us personal stories about her family & friends to better understand the concepts. and she tries really hard to engage with us
Super enthusiastic during every lecture!
She is a very friendly and caring person, her attitude in class always put a smile on everyone's face. she was never once in a bad mood and is always enthusiastic in class and what she is teaching.
Shes very professional about her work.
She's always smiling and really enthusiastic, even when the class isn't really responsive or giving her much feedback. She's very excited about the course material and seems to always have a positive attitude, which I really like because it helps me learn better when my professor is happy.
She is extremely well educated and I don't doubt any information she gives us. She is also very friendly and enthusiastic about the course.
sometimes cute and funny
She explains the materials well and goes over the points that we absolutely need to know.
Great
She always makes you smile, she is funny and genuine. She covers the material well, but she just posts the power points so there is no incentive to come to class.
very professional and on task. never procrastinates and does her job with a positive attitude.
Welcoming, knowledgable and approachable.
She is always very polite and patient when lecturing and also when answering students' questions. She is not boring but speaks in a way that won't put you to sleep.
She was professional and knowledgeable. I could tell she was passionate about the subject and knew what she was talking about.
I like how Professor Banna was always happy and cheerful upon arriving to class.
A very studious and open minded person. Always willing to answer questions and give personal background whenever possible.
She is friendly and helpful, always smiling.
She's upbeat
Free Spirited, Friendly, Open to any questions or concerns and always genuinely cares for her students.
Friendly and professional
she was happy
I feel that she is very professional. I can tell that she really tries to make the class interesting. She adds a little bit of humor and it really helps with the learning. She's really passionate about the subject which is really cool and makes learning a lot better. I also like that when she asks questions in class and no one immediately answers she doesn't get discouraged. I like that she is very patient with the class, but is also assertive. When she tells us her personal stories, it makes the class that much better. For me, I am an aspiring registered dietitian and her examples are really insightful. Plus she has a lot of experience in this field, and you can tell.
Very good
She is very enthusiastic about the subject and it is easy see that she loves what she does. She is professional and wants her students to learn more about the subject.
I really enjoyed this class. Jinan was an amazing teacher. She has a great style a voice that makes you want to listen. She is super friendly and supportive. Good job!
I have tried to contact her once, but she never replied her email.
A very professional teacher who is understanding and open to her students needs. She's very friendly and I think people seem shy to talk to her during lectures because it is a big lecture class. But overall she's a great teacher who is enthusiastic about her subject and really knows what she is talking about.
She was very helpful and professional
Positive all the time and just is enthusiastic about the topic she is teaching.
She behaved respectufully with everyone in the classroom and had a good attitude even when people seemed to not pay attention.
sheʻs professional
You're awesome and enthusiastic!
Pretty funny sometimes
Jinan was nice and enthusiastic.
One thing about Banna's professional behavior that really stood out to me is how well she dressed each day.
Professor Banna always had a positive attitude toward the subject and students.
very positive woman
She was very enthusiastic and informational.
She always has a positive attitude. I like that even if students answer a question wrong, she will find a way to reflect that answer in a lesson.
Professor Banna was super friendly and was easy to ask questions to. Also, she always responded to emails right away.
25. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
Keep the weekly online quizzes because it helps me to test myself on the material that was already taught.
I found the power points to be helpful in studying the material as they hone in on what to focus on for exams. Professor Banna's application of the material to real life experiences (Peru etc.) were really enjoyable.
keep up the good work.
The quizzes and tests and powerpoints have NO relation to what we were tested on. I would study the notes, practice tests, study guides and weekly quizzes and I would still be absolutely lost on the tests. I came to class, paid attention, and took good notes but still felt so unprepared for the tests even after days of studying. I wish the questions on the test would be more closely related to what we learned in class.
None
None
More extra credit opportunities? Possibly dropping the lowest quiz or exam grade because there are times when students have "off days" and don't do their best for one exam/quiz. I wouldn't want that one mishap to reflect in my overall performance.
Move on when student participation is not happening
None
More extra credit
As listed above, maybe doing more interactive things with the class.
I think she does a great job teaching the course.
None
Professor Banna has to have herself available in the morning of her class and not only the TA. Sometimes the TA are not available in the morning and we have to set meeting time in the afternooons
more quizzes
More hands on type of activities would be really nice. Another thing is to please let class out early on time.
I don't have many suggestions for the class. Overall, this class is one of my favorite classes.
I would like to see more homework assignments that work directly with the course material.
Nothing
The only suggestion that I would make is to not go so fast through the power points. Towards the end, it was harder to copy down the information on the power point because Jinan would go a through them quickly.
nothing, it was great
None.
Don't go on conferences ..in spain. :)
Maybe could have better slides. Love how the course is engaging and full of different things in a lecture, but no one seems to want to talk in friendly discussions.
Don't read verbatim from the powerpoint
She can probably have us do some more activities rather than than have us talk to people we're sitting next to during class.
Nothing much I really liked her power points & her methods of teaching
none
I think she did a great job informing students with her power point presentations and the videos she incorporated into the slides. the practice problems re very helpful as well.
Maybe adding more extra credit and more practice exams as resources
Maybe we could have more of those activities that involve the students more by making them physically engage in different exercises or something to stimulate their brain a little more. Lectures are okay, but it's hard to process all of that information sometimes when I'm just sitting there.
More online resources for studying.
More hw assingment, less quizzes.
More assignments to help learn the material better. Mini quizzes aren't as effective at retaining the material. The slides alone aren't enough to keep the material.
None
I thought that the class participation exercises weren't that useful. We were a huge class and everybody just was not comfortable with talking to one another. I also found that the study guides did not really help me when actually studying for the exams. I did all of them, however I thought that the concepts discussed, did not really show itself on the test. I loved that we had extra credit I would have liked to maybe had more.
Maybe hold study classes before the exam.
nothing much. She does her job just fine.
More review of information in class such as Jepodary, true or false questions and etc.
Maybe discuss a little bit more on nutrition for athletes and maybe bring in some professional athletes and let them lecture a couple times.
This course was difficult for me to swallow at times because I have different beliefs about food than mainstream doctors and the government. I was disappointed with a lot of the information because in my eyes, it was wrong. I had prior knowledge of nutrition coming in to this class and expected to keep consistent with that trajectory; however, the information was inconsistent with my background knowledge and I never felt comfortable enough to share my opinion.
I like how she teaches, however I think more interactive lectures would allow more students to be involved during class.
I would recommend letting student correct exams for partial points back, its a good way for students to learn from their mistakes as well as giving a little extra help for those who need it. It gives the students the incentive to keep at the studies as well as ask questions with problems they encountered.
Try keep in contact with the student's progress
Some students arent the best test takers just like me. Maybe to help students who struggle with this problem is have more assignments so they will be able to raise up their grades.
Organized and very easy to follow
Actually put stuff that you talked about in class on the test
I feel that her teaching style is really good. I really enjoyed her teaching style. I would say that she is probably one of the best professors I have had. She speaks loud and clear and annunciates, which is a really good thing. I feel that the only thing that could be improved would be that on Laulima, the power points could be placed on in black and white background. When its the other colors its harder to read when printed out, plus it wastes a lot more ink. I like that in the powerpoint its colorful though.
have the extra credit quizzes at the end of the class
I liked the mixture of lecture and short video clips to add diversity. She speaks well and displays power point well. I would have liked her to go more in depth on certain things because I felt I could have learned many of the things from her power point by just reading the textbook.
Please read your emails.
I think Banna could make the students feel less scared to ask questions and be more open in class. I like how she tried methods to involve her students interaction by doing group conversation, green and red paper, and asking questions. Although I noticed a lot of students were scared to participate so maybe she could do something to make her students less scared to participate by giving them participation points or something.
more extra credit mini quizzes
This class is quite challenging so maybe a curve for the course might be best suited. Nothing else to change to be honest.
She lectured with the help of slides that help people who need verbal and visual teaching. More hands on activities in class.
She isnʻt the most captivating of instructors.
If you could have a small review session the course day right before the test. I think that would benefit everyone, especially those who actually come to class everyday
Maybe not telling too many stories about her personal life
Try not to wreck students with so much information at once. Try to cater a little more to those who aren't in love with the subject. Try being less dry and robotic; it's apparent that YOU are enjoying the course but others might not have the same passion so try to work towards making those students enjoy the course and material instead of throwing the info around and segregating those who love the subject and those taking it as a requirement.
Be more clear on what lectures are most important.
Overall I was able to learn and retain a lot of information due to professor Banna's teaching style. However, sometimes the lectures got monotonous. I would recommend incorporating more videos or another source of content to switch it up once in a while.
n/a
Some of the questions on quizzes and exams could be worded better. For example, I am not 100% sure that the best time to prepare for old age is from conception - I checked the textbook and internet sources and it says that adolescents is a good time to prepare and be healthy since it is when you have your growth spurt and need lots of nutrients for growth. There were a couple more that I can't think of at the moment, but I like that most of the questions are straightforward.
To improve the course, there could maybe be more assignments instead of only 3. That would help students review the material more and give them a better understanding of the material.
26. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Excellent professor overall. She gives out extra credit with the mini quizzes each week to help boost the student's grades. I really learned a lot about myself by doing Assignment #2 because it helped me to see if I was getting enough carbohydrates, proteins, and fat a day.
I was happy to have had this professor for this course. She is very friendly and knowledgeable on the subject.
Very friendly, maybe a little awkward at times but she makes for a very fun professor, a great class to start my day, and a provider of pertinent information.
She was a good teacher, but the material didn't seem to match up
She's extremely knowledgeable in her field and she knows exactly how to teach it that's easy for everyone to understand.
Willing to work with you if you communicate with her. Always helpful.
Great professor with good insight and anecdotes on nutrition and food.
excellent
She is a very good teacher and easy to talk to
I like the class and the professor
Very good teacher that keeps students engaged
She is a good instructor who knows what she is talking about.
She makes the course very exciting because she is so into what she is teaching. And I believe that is a great quality to have as a professor.
Very great teacher
My overall review of Professor Banna she is a very sweet person but I feel that within her course students should have the option to do extra credit work. When I asked for extra credit she said she will find some but all the points should for a little more then what was given.
excellent
Really good! Excellent teacher, very knowledgable in the field of nutrition, and she's very nice.
She is a very kind and professional professor and she does her job well!!! Thumbs up!
She is a good teacher
Was a good educator.
She is enthusiastic about the material, but sometimes it is a little bit difficult to make all of that material interesting. I would recommend this professor.
A
Jinan is a good teacher. She explains the material and makes it interesting, relatable, and easy to understand. She always accepts questions and answers them to the best of her ability. I enjoyed her class and would recommend it to other students.
a great professor who is very dedicated to teaching students about her vast knowledge on nutrition.
A very passionate professor.
Good.
A great teacher who tries to mix things up in the course to engage the students learning.
Good, would take again
I think Professor Banna did an excellent job in teaching this course.
She's very straight foward & you could tell she loves this major
She's awesome!
that she is a great person and can teach the class very well, she informs the students of everything we need to know for the exam and prepares us for the exam for us to succeed.
shes a good professor.
She's great! I really like her and I'm glad I have her as my professor.
5/5
Clear voice and nice
Evaluates the material well and good at getting concepts across to students. needs more material to help retain material.
She is awesome
I enjoyed her and would take another class from her.
good professor. Knows her material very well and teaches just fine.
A good lecturer. She manages to teach a lot of people in an understandable way.
Two thumbs up. Would take this class again or any class taught by Prof. Banna in a heart beat.
She is a great professor. She seems very knowledgeable about what she is teaching.
As a lecturer, she did say "so" a lot; however, for the most part, she was engaging, professional, and knowledgeable.
Overall Dr.Banna was very influential on how I handle my meals and has really showed effort to help students in this field as well as entertain those within her class. She is enthusiastic as well as informative on the subject matter.
Awesome!
She knows whats she's talking about but could help the students a little more
Very engaging and passionate in what she teaches.
Good
she really hard and does not put what are on the slides in the test
She was a really good professor. I would say one of the best that I have had. She's professional, has a lot of knowledge on the subject, and isn't too intimidating to talk to. I really like her and hope to have her again for another higher level class.
On a A-F scale... I give her a B
Keep up the good work. You are doing great.
She is a great teacher but she needs to communicate more with her students
She's a very nice teacher who is really enthusiastic about her subject. She really understand what she is talking about and tries her best to help her students succeed in her class.
she's great
Good instructor and nothing else really to say, presents her slides explains it, asks for questions, if not then assigns homework and make slides to prepare for exams.
She is a wonderful teacher is is talented and extremely intelligent about this subject.
She seems nervous when teaching the class, and canʻt capture the attention of the class.
I hope that I get you again sometime during my college career
good
The course was very helpful in my knowledge on nutrition.
Professor Banna is an excellent professor!
very good teacher
She is a great teacher!
She has a great personality and seems very enthusiastic about nutrition. She could go a bit more in depth while teaching rather than saying the same things on the Powerpoints.
Great. She taught the information well and she was very helpful when help was needed.

31. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I really liked the chapters on the Pregnancy/Breastfeeding, Energy Needs, Childhood Health, Adolescence Health, and Adulthood Health.
I like that this course all has pertinent information that I can apply in my personal and professional life.
Learning about the components of a healthy diet. I think its easiest to "passively" manage my diet and just by getting a more comprehensive understanding has led me to be more conscientious about my food choice.
What I learned about the diet
Dr. Banna's teaching style
I really enjoyed learning about the various needs of nutrition over a persons lifespan. Learning about the nutritional needs throughout the world was also very interesting.
Generally just learning about nutrients.
How we can apply the course to our daily life or to people that we know
Extra credit opportunities, the quizzes could be easily done online.
All of it
Learning about different types of foods for nutrients
Not alot of Homework
I liked the content of the course.
I liked getting. Better understanding of nutrition in general. It was very interesting.
On the food nutrition
Nutritional facts
I liked more of the hands on kind of stuff. Like going outdoors to do so studing. Or going down to use the Athletes facilities like taking a walk for exercise.
exams because it tested my knowledge
The course material was really interesting and I liked the case studies presented in class.
The extra credit offered for showing up to class and taking the mini quiz helps to keep students coming to class, although the powerpoints are posted online. The structure of laulima is also very organized, keeping study guides, powerpoint lectures, assignments, etc nice and neat.
I liked the fact that the tests were pretty straightforward
This is a very valuable course to everyday life and healthy lifestyles. Learning about sports nutrition was pretty cool, and a lot different from what I expected.
I enjoyed the parts on macronutrients.
I enjoyed learning about different nutrients and planning a diet. These were topics that relate to my life and that I use everyday. I also enjoyed assignment 2 because it taught me how to evaluate my diet to determine whether I am getting the right amount of nutrients.
the mini quizzes that helped boost my grade, even if just a little
The extra credit!
Broad information . Which I found applicable to my everyday life.
I liked the sharing of foods and seeing the nutrition content of it.
Homework
I like the fact that she puts all of the slides on Laulima and that we take quizzes every week to check our understanding of the course material.
The videos in between powerpoints they were really entertaining to watch in addition informative.
It was clear and concise
I liked learning about the pregnancy, children nutrition and which foods contain the best nutrients for you.
The assignments.
I like when our professor showed us funny videos or just any video in general. They were entertaining (such as the surfing alpaca) and kept my attention.
I enjoyed the digestion topics the most.
N/A
Learning about so many different areas of nutrition such as food management, deficiency diseases and exercise. l
Powerpoints
I liked that we learned of concepts that directly affect us. I learned about so many things that I can utilize in my daily life.
The second assignment. It was personable and hands on.
Probably the whole balancing on what to eat to have a healthy diet. Things that you should or shouldn't eat were interesting as well.
A well rounded focus on nutrition.
Learning about macro and micro nutrients.
The mini quizzes and the online quizzes.
I was pleased that all the information needed for exams was presented in class and on the powerpoints, instead of having to dig through the book.
Every topic that was brought up was interesting within itself.
Knowledge
The assignments
Learning about old age, children and mothers and babies. This could help benefit girls in the future!
Learning how calories are pulled from different sources and in what proportions
got on good diet
I liked all the knowledge that I was able to obtain. It was a really useful class and even if I weren't going into the dietetics major I would have loved to take the class because its so useful outside of the class.
The athletes nutrition
I enjoyed looking at the different video clips and cartoons to keep lecture interesting.
An overall great experience.
Applying the studies while we learn to through was the best aspect.
I really liked how the assignments and quiz really helps our grade. Its not one of those lecture classes that are only based on papers and exams. She helps her students understand the concept from assignments and quizzes, which are really helpful in the test.
the power points were helpful
not sure to be honest.. have to think about that one.
I really liked learning about BMI and appropriate ways to maintain a healthy weight while making it clear that super skinny isn't the best.
the weekly quizzes
Learning material that helps you personally.
The videos. Any videos at all. Just the videos.
The macronutrients and micronutrients aspects.
easy to understand and good study guides/practice exams.
all
Learning about protein, kcal, lipids and alcohol
Learning about the food groups.
I liked the green and pink papers we would bring to class to answer questions when they were asked. Those helped a lot.
I like how we get 3 tries to do the quiz, how the slides are available online
32. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Understanding the Digestive System processes. There was a lot to memorize!
This was one of my more enjoyable classes- no complaints.
The direct dietition work. I felt like it was very major specific and, while I can't always get what I want, tedious with very little reward.
The lectures that didn't seem relevant to the tests
The amount of readings assigned
Learning about pregnancy and learning about the digestive tract. I have never really enjoyed discussion of the digestive tract or the word 'intestines'.
The chemistry of the macronutrients...
n/a
None
Community building - when we're told to talk to our neighbor to discuss
Not enough extra credit
I guess the hardest thing was just trying to keep up with the quizzes.
I didn't like the little bit of math that is in the course not because it is hard just because it's math.
About the body
like everything
I did not like the activities that was created for the class.
none
I didn't really like that class would go to the second and sometimes even after class was supposed to be finished. I have a class all the way across campus and running just a minute after automatically makes me late to my next class. She tries to squeeze in 3 more powerpoint slides in 1 minute and kind of useless.
No aspects that I dont like.
I did not like that the final is going to be cumulative
I wasn't very interested in learning about geriatric or pregnancy health. I actually didn't expect to learn about those things in taking this class.
Vitamins and minerals because there was a lot to memorize
I didn't like when the TA's or guest lecturer taught. They went very fast through the material and I don'f feel that they covered all the important topics that I needed to know.
nothing
None.
No complaints
I did not like the neighbor discussions.
The Tests
What I liked least about the course was that there weren't more activities that had us interact with other people other than having us just discuss with others about the class content.
The fact that there's 3 exams & a final.
The weekly quizzes
I didn't like learning the chemistry part of it just because chemistry isn't my favorite subject.
The tests. And that there wasn't that much extra credit opportunities.
I didn't like if the students weren't engaged, either by not asking questions, or by just only having a lecture the entire class period.
Learning about eating disorders.
N/A
few assignments.
Quizes
I lost interest after the mid term.
Nothing much. Maybe assignment 2 was my least favorite thing to do.
memorization of specific, esoteric facts. This doesn't really happen that much, but I feel that sort of material should be left to upper level classes.
The partner discussions
Maybe could bring in some guest speakers
In my opinion, the incorrect information.
Enjoyed the course, very interesting material.
Assignments (other than the second one)
The study guides weren't very relatable to the tests
Too slowly paced
the test
I would say all the memorizing. But that is something that all the classes deal with.
None
The exams were pretty hard. :)
I didn't like how the study guide were sometimes giving too much information that wasn't relevant to the actual exam. I mean some of the information was needed for the exam, but there were other questions in the study guide that wasn't even related to questions in the exam.
the fact that there was a limited amount of assignments to bring up your grades
the three exams that we had to do and that is not including the final exam which is cumulative.
The part I liked the least is the assignments that are multiple choice.
the power points and lectures
Learning about the stuff in food.
Everything that wasn't a video.
No aspects come to mind from this course that I did not like.
none
The pregnancy section
Too many questions on the Assignments; a few were good but then it got boring with repetition, like naming the food groups to 30 foods.
I did not like the tests. They were really tricky and I did not get the grades I wanted on them even when I studied super hard for them.
I didn't like discussing with your neighbors because sometimes there aren't people sitting next to me or those around me don't seem interested in discussing. So I'm just there waiting.
33. Other comments:
I really like the mini quizzes for extra credit! The bingo review game was also a fun tool to prepare for the 3rd exam.
I would not recommend this class to a friend
At times during lecture, there was too much pacing back and forth which became rather distracting. Although I do appreciate the movement as it's more engaging.
Will be recommending this course to others

Overall I really enjoyed this class and would recommend it to other students.
Great job!

Really good class. Learned a lot
none
I learned a lot this semester, so thank you Dr. Banna!
The TA's need to be more on top of things. I missed and exam and requested to make it up and I didn't hear back from them for two weeks and they never even got back to me about making it up.
N/A
A class all student should take because it is very important and basic knowledge that can complete reshape the outcome of people's health.
Great class!
I apologize for falling asleep in class multiple times. I realize that it is very disrespectful and rude. Being a student-athlete I have to wake up early everyday which definitely is not beneficial to my well being both physically and mentally, but the more important one is the latter.
The final exam is ridiculous. Consider being less like Adolph Hitler. Thanks.
overall I had a good time and acquired a lot of knowledge through professor Banna's class.
I think it would be beneficial to add a couple more questions to the exams. Maybe 43 because 40 seems too little and 4 wrong is already 90%. I also thought it was weird for a nutritionist to promote the weight loss pills that we watched a video on.

17. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The first few classes explaining about different methods of epidemiological study was good and there should be more discussion on this. Homework was beneficial in learning how to evaluate/criticize articles but there should be more discussions about homework answers. Student presentations are good in that it was beneficial in further evaluating a study.
I learned a great deal from the guest lecturers about how epidemiology can be used to address contemporary health issues. These presentations provided insight on applications of epidemiology which can provide guidelines regarding which directions to go in research.
The research articles.
18. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Having too many guest presenters because I would have rather learned about what an epidemiology study is about and how to conduct one as opposed to learning about individual studies. It's hard to learn about individual studies when we don't understand the methods or how the study was conducted.
The Willett textbook was pretty much useless. Each chapter discusses epidemiological methods and issues by simply providing a list of examples of how each method or issue was used in a study. There were way too many examples and not nearly enough critical discussion. This book had little educational value in terms of helping students learn how to apply these methods.
The book and some of the speakers were not very engaging. It would be nice if the speakers while talking about their research emphasized more how this relates back to the topic we are focused on for the week.

36. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
We should learn about technical topics of epidemiological studies, more like the types of studies, methods of nutrient measurements, chi-square, and 95% confidence intervals. I would rather have lectures on these, followed by a guest speaker who's involved in a study that incorporates these methods. Homework should also be discussed after completion and correction.
As much as I enjoyed the guest speakers, I would have liked to have heard more from Dr. Banna. Most of her lectures were in the beginning of the course. I would have liked to have heard her interpretation of issues concerning nutrition and cancer, nutrition and aging, etc.
Better book to use to reference Epi Nutrition information. Taking more time to explain the different types of research and breaking the class up at least over 2 days.

45. Other comments:
Honestly, I would have preferred take-home exams over in-class exams. This would have allowed us more time to critically discuss the lessons from class and evaluate a research study.
The test was really long. I did not understand why a research article was added to the mid-term and final since we are already being evaluated on critically reviewing articles. It also made the test extremely long by which point I was tired and just trying to rush to finish.

26. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
-More prompt posting of grades -More flexibility on the time of the synch sessions. Perhaps you could take a student poll regarding a good time? I took this class because my schedule is extremely tight, and a required afternoon class session was extremely difficult. -Ensure accuracy and consistency of information
None.
the sync sessions are a little difficult due to time schedules.
I didn't like how little time we had on each quiz.
No syncronist sessions
updated grade book
N/A
I think synchronous sessions should be offered at other times instead of just one specific time frame.
Some emailed reminders or updates on the facebook page about deadlines from assignments or projects would be helpful.
Have an oncampus review session before tests/exams
none so far, course was great
When the test and quizzes are times it puts pressure on the student. Also when the amount of time is so short it makes it even harder to stay calm and concentrate without stressing about time.
A more up to date status of our grade would be good.
remind students on whats due and when because its difficult sometimes when having multiple online courses
Maybe to communicate more with the student in letting them know when this's are do and suggestions for ways to improve their work.
Maybe have an announcement on Laulima about everything due, I often forgot about the discussion assignments since it wasn't in the syllabus.
-Updated gradebook
The content needed to know for quizzes.
N/A
I think the layout of the course is good since we have a week to complete assignments and do quizzes.
Less technical difficulties
N/A
No improvements necessary, except maybe a longer time limit on weekly tests.

Nothing. This course was beyond helpful and I enjoyed it very much. Banna is a great teacher and very helpful when I needed help. The course was well organized and I gained life knowledge that I can apply everyday.
some of the questions on the quizzes and exams were sometimes confusing worded kind of tricky.
The only thing I had trouble with in this class were the quizzes. There were a lot of answers that were similar to each other, and unfortunately I would choose the wrong answer which is where I lost most of my points.
Reminders would be beneficial since the weekly assignments and quizzes can be hard to keep track of in addition to the iProfile assignment as well. The Tuesday sessions are also easy to miss due to lack of any reminders or technical difficulties.
more preparation for students during sync sessions
All methods were effective and clear good job!
I really like the idea of being able to work at my own pace. Giving me a week to complete the assignments and more than enough time to complete the homework assignments. This was a very well produced class.
more reminders about assignments and deadlines. Since this class is online there is no reminder the class before when something is due the following. I had trouble getting organized and figuring out all of the different assignments quizzes and posts we had every week. It was a lot to handle I felt for an online course. I feel like most people take online courses to accommodate another class in an already busy schedule, and having so many assignments and projects in a class that you dont actually have to attend and therefore cant be reminded constantly of is hard to keep up with.
The synchronous sessions were hard to learn from because there was a lot going on and it was easy to get lost or confused. I think they could however be a good tool to use if there was a little more coherency between the breakout and main room sessions.
27. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
A very knowledgable, approachable and enthusiastic professor running a course with some logistical difficulties
Very Good.

she is a good teacher, she knows her content, answers questions, and it prompt in replying.
She is very helpful and knows her the principles of this course very well. She's quick to get back to emails (except weekends, but she made that clear in the beginning of the semester to balance her personal life and work).
She's a very capable and kind professor, it might be a bit better if it were a class we could attend physically but the convenience of it being online is a breath of fresh air compared to other courses.
very knowledgeable and comfortable with on-line teaching
Great!!
She was helpful and effective at her job and helping me to learn as much as I possibly could about nutrition for infants, all the way up to the elderly.
I think she is a knowledgeable source of Nutrition, however I was overwhelmed with too many little assignments.

timed quizzes and food log analysis without help
The amount of work
I felt like there was more work compared to if I had taken the class on campus, but that is to be expected.
too many things were due each week. it was a challenge to keep up with. most of the time an online course is taken because a person has an already busy schedule. and it was a lot to do on top of other classes and work.
The synchronous sessions were difficult for me to learn by because the program seemed to always shut down on me.

Everything. I pretty much self directed my own studies. I took this class for my own benefits to learn about the science of how the body works, what is good for you to eat such as vitamins/minerals etc.
I am now taking proactive measure in my life to stay healthy
Making more nutritious choices in my lifestyle :)
Time management and initial nutrition information about the body and life
I learned about sports nutrition, which I will apply to my daily life because I'm an athlete.
I'll remember the importance of micro nutrients and vitamins. I'll remember the importance of eating more non processed food and eat at least one type of food item shown on the "myplate" (protein, vegetables, dairy, wheat, carbs) I have a better understanding of fastfood nutrients and how much calories i need everyday.
-diet project
I learned some of the basics of nutrition
I learned a lot about food composition which will help me in the future since this is my major.
I learned a lot about proper dieting and how to eat healthy. I will use this information for future references to change the way I choose to eat.

Life applications of diet and nutrition
I got a basic understanding of the components of nutrition. I could have looked up the information myself, but this course exposed me to other resources and key themes.
Information about what foods I should intake and what I shouldn't.
Lots of important information about food and health.

25. Comment on the instructor's professional attitude and behavior.
Great attitude. I havent met her in person but we virtually communicate as a class online once a month through our group sessions. She seems very nice and understanding.
She is very professional & is willing to work with her students which is really amazing.
Helpful :)
Professional
Dr. Banna is very flexible and understanding. These qualities make it easier for students like me, who work a full time job.
no problems or issues. I felt she was a good professor and well organized.
She was nice but her emails were kind of confusing..very minor though, it didn't bother me. She sent out more reminders for the class, which I really appreciated, and really motivated me to make sure I didn't miss any deadlines.
Very positive attitude towards teaching the class.
She was very professional and was more than happy to answer any questions I had.
Professor Banna was open to new ways of improving the course and was willing to listen to our input. I think that more teacher's should be open to student's input as ways to improve courses.
Great attitude
She was very helpful when I had trouble with working the online sessions, so I was very appreciative.
Very responsive and proffesional
26. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
It's fine the way it is.
I think she does a very good job of teaching an online course
Maybe go over the homework assignments or projects before they're due? It would help to just briefly go over it so as to not miss out some things. There were some things on the assignments that I didn't catch was marked off. Even though I should be more careful, I feel that going over the assignments ahead of the due date would help out a lot- as with the weekly reminders for things that due.
Midway through, she changed the weekly due dates which was good for all student, and opened a larger time frame for a handful of us - good move for listening to your students. Teaching style is good, but could work on keeping students updated on grades, keeping students motivated, and being more interactive with students. Bad-on synch sessions. On Tuesday/Thursday from 3pm - 8pm I had class so wasn't able to attend any. If you're gonna do a synch session, do it all week or don't make it a requirement because it takes much more time and effort to do alternate assignments and it isn't fair to those who can't attend because you'll only do it those days. Another online teacher of mine made it not required and also did it throughout the day so we could attend.
The only suggestion I have is making the directions on the synchronous sessions more clear, so that it's easier for us students to complete the project the way you want it. Showing an example would help! :)
Possibility to add more video examples/demonstrations of subject material being covered each week.
This class is a lot of work for 100 level.I hated the group projects! Most people in the class don't have time to meet, and that's why they take online classes! I felt like I spent more time babysitting some of my group members, and less time working on the project. I would have been satisfied just doing it alone. I have been at U.H for five years, I am graduating this semester, and the group project for this class has to be the worst in any that I have ever had. The project was NOT the problem... it was the people I had to work with that was a NIGHTMARE!!! -In future semester, let people do there presentation alone, it is less time consuming.
The synchronious sessions were a little buggy at times.
Send out more reminders about due dates
I thought that after a few changes were made to the course it was taught well. It was easier to keep up with assignments and the material.
Stop using Wiley
Have the possibility to be more flexible with synchronous sessions. Provide more study materials for quizzes and tests.
You can improve sessions because it feels that not that much people pay attention.
Do not ask for presentations on topics that have yet to be covered, or make it more clear that such presentations are due weeks before the topics will be covered.
27. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Great teacher. Very straight forward. Has everything online and updates us weekly on what is due.
she is a smart & caring teacher
Good teacher. Everything was very organized and straight-forward.
Been in the system quite a while, I'd assume because she doesn't give much individual attention to students needs or take the time to recognize a student struggling. Overall, very professionable and knowledgable, and i learned so much from her course. (Even though I probably failed it)
Overall, this course was very fun to take. I learned a lot of things about nutrition that I can apply to my daily life.
highly positive and good professor who knows her material and wants people to realize the importance of daily nutrition.
I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone trying to find a 100 level elective online, IF that group project is still required.
Did a good job of moderating the online class.
She is a very knowledgeable good teacher who was more than willing to help and made this online class easier because of her teaching style and enthusiasm
I think that she did a good job teaching this online class. She was hands on in a sense and was looking for ways to improve the course and willing to try new things and she was organized.

Everything. The fact that I got to pretty much teach myself my own material without having to go to class because everything was already laid out. Your part as a student was to do the assignments.
How she would periodically remind us of assignments that were due.
I was able to complete tasks and assignments on my own time.
Convenient
I liked the flexibility of it. I can work more, thus pay for school.
no traffic, but most likeable thing about this class was learning how to improve my own health.
The diet project was interesting.
Not having a class period to attend.
The flexablity and not having to attend lectures
I liked the convenience of being able to do work for this class on my free time because I'm usually very busy, being the reason why I took an online course instead of in-class lecture.
the flexibility
Jinan was understanding about assignments and receptive to suggestions. She was also good about communicating her expectations. This online class was just as if not more effective than a classroom version.

The group project.
synchronnous sesions
The online quiz's
At times it can get difficult to keep up with due dates. It's a little harder to keep up with because everything is on your own and you have to be that much more responsible.
the blackboard collaborate
Technical problems and lack of communications with instructors and classmates.
sometimes it is difficult to remember due dates
Group presentation was due weeks before topic was covered in class. In an introductory course, this is just plain silly. Communication of who's/which group topic was due in upcoming teleconference session was lacking.

Learning about the different vitamins/minerals and what types of fruits and veggies have them. Also the body systems and how each enzymes, etc are broken down.
Reading the modules
Great course. i love this class and learned so much. I cannot thank Banna enough I am more than happy to have taken this class and learned so much. Great learning environment. Great Teacher. She is awesome. Perfect class. there is no reason not to take this class. Glad and grateful to have taken it online. Banna is great, listens well. She accommodates deadlines if you need them to be. I am a working student and she works great with students who have to work full time to support self. Very admirable quality. She is very understanding.
Can do things at my own pace. I like the visual elements. I am a visual learner so I learn better this way.
The materials
I like the flexibility.
I loved the "weekly module" which allowed us to see future powerpoint/pdf slides of upcoming subjects/material.
diet project
Not having a class period to attend.
Flexibility
Jinan was an effective online instructor. It made me more of an independent learner which is ultimately a plus, but I felt I had access to her if necessary.
That everything was due on Sundays.
37. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
N/A
Sychronous sessions
There's not a chance to make up missed points =/
The time structure
Nothing.
The project was one least thing that caused me stress
group project
synchronnous sesions
Quiz's
That we were not able to contact our fellow classmates that well.
Quizzes were overly difficult. Questions are mostly exam caliber in that they didn't simply test acquisition of new knowledge but the application of several different concepts in answering a single question. Several weekly quiz questions relied on information barely touched on in readings and presentation slides (textbook sidebar/auxiliary subsections).
38. Other comments:
Great class!
Nothing needs to be changed. She accepted that we needed the time things to be due from Saturday to Sunday and that worked out better for everyone. This should stay the same. Sunday midnight due date for all things, not Saturday.
None
I had a hard time with some of the quiz/test questions. Some seemed 'tricky', or not super straight forward. I know quizes and tests are supposed to assess a students knowledge, but I felt that some of the questions could have been simplified while still serving their purpose.
fun interesting course
Seriously, group presentations due weeks before the topic is covered in an introductory course this is just plain silly.

14. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
First of all, the presentations since we had to critically analyzed the articles, and also sharing our personal thoughts about the articles because it was enriching.
I enjoyed the new topics each week. I was able to learn more about child and adolescent nutrition and evaluate research in a critical manner.
Students' presentation and guest speakers in different academic areas
Prodding students to prepare questions prior to each class really pushed me to not just read the article, but to reflect on it and formulate opinions about it.
The critique of publications and discussion.
Weekly questions and written critiques.
15. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I think that instead of discussion questions the assigments could be a comment, a brief reflection or analysis as a way to identify the strenghts and limitations in a regular basis. This is my opinion about the discussion questions because most of the time the speaker has the same information than the audience as we all read the article, so the discussion questions sometimes needed more background about how the research was conducted. Many times the discussion questions could be answered just by making a little research by ourselves. However, the discussion questions are definetely great when the speaker is the author of the article since they can provide more information and clear any doubts.
I would have liked more direction or instruction concerning evaluating the literature. Certain things to look for or pointers because I think I could have a done a better job on the article critiques having known more. I would have also liked some more direction or a format to follow to do the article critiques.

28. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Maybe it would be helpful to include an activity that requires students to participate more.
It is only a one credit class and the homework for the credit was eccessive. Having to do a presentation, 2 article critiques, and homework questions weekly was too much versus the amount of credits offered. The presentation and homework questions would be sufficient and the other points could offered by in-class participation, like asking questions after presentations. There was some students who never said anything all semester long.
I would have liked more direction or instruction concerning evaluating the literature. Certain things to look for or pointers because I think I could have a done a better job on the article critiques having known more. Lead more on discussion. Make the syllabus more clear...
Maybe before each week give a brief intro of the main topic itself.
Combine readings of the unique needs of children/adolescence at the different developmental stages with the age group discussed/covered during lecture/presentations. In my opinion, this activity will help to identify steps or thoughts to consider when conducting research in children.
