17. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The research articles.
The first few classes explaining about different methods of epidemiological study was good and there should be more discussion on this. Homework was beneficial in learning how to evaluate/criticize articles but there should be more discussions about homework answers. Student presentations are good in that it was beneficial in further evaluating a study.
I learned a great deal from the guest lecturers about how epidemiology can be used to address contemporary health issues. These presentations provided insight on applications of epidemiology which can provide guidelines regarding which directions to go in research.
18. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
The book and some of the speakers were not very engaging. It would be nice if the speakers while talking about their research emphasized more how this relates back to the topic we are focused on for the week.
Having too many guest presenters because I would have rather learned about what an epidemiology study is about and how to conduct one as opposed to learning about individual studies. It's hard to learn about individual studies when we don't understand the methods or how the study was conducted.
The Willett textbook was pretty much useless. Each chapter discusses epidemiological methods and issues by simply providing a list of examples of how each method or issue was used in a study. There were way too many examples and not nearly enough critical discussion. This book had little educational value in terms of helping students learn how to apply these methods.

36. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Better book to use to reference Epi Nutrition information. Taking more time to explain the different types of research and breaking the class up at least over 2 days.
We should learn about technical topics of epidemiological studies, more like the types of studies, methods of nutrient measurements, chi-square, and 95% confidence intervals. I would rather have lectures on these, followed by a guest speaker who's involved in a study that incorporates these methods. Homework should also be discussed after completion and correction.
As much as I enjoyed the guest speakers, I would have liked to have heard more from Dr. Banna. Most of her lectures were in the beginning of the course. I would have liked to have heard her interpretation of issues concerning nutrition and cancer, nutrition and aging, etc.

The expectations for the homework assignments could have been made more clear.

45. Other comments:
The test was really long. I did not understand why a research article was added to the mid-term and final since we are already being evaluated on critically reviewing articles. It also made the test extremely long by which point I was tired and just trying to rush to finish.
Honestly, I would have preferred take-home exams over in-class exams. This would have allowed us more time to critically discuss the lessons from class and evaluate a research study.

Prof Banna was very professional, responsive and helpful. Her teaching assistants were not necessarily so helpful or professional on a consistent basis, but she was always available to assist when any issues arose.

The only suggestion I have is making the directions on the synchronous sessions more clear, so that it's easier for us students to complete the project the way you want it. Showing an example would help! :)
Maybe go over the homework assignments or projects before they're due? It would help to just briefly go over it so as to not miss out some things. There were some things on the assignments that I didn't catch was marked off. Even though I should be more careful, I feel that going over the assignments ahead of the due date would help out a lot- as with the weekly reminders for things that due.
You can improve sessions because it feels that not that much people pay attention.

I thought that after a few changes were made to the course it was taught well. It was easier to keep up with assignments and the material.
Do not ask for presentations on topics that have yet to be covered, or make it more clear that such presentations are due weeks before the topics will be covered.
This class is a lot of work for 100 level.I hated the group projects! Most people in the class don't have time to meet, and that's why they take online classes! I felt like I spent more time babysitting some of my group members, and less time working on the project. I would have been satisfied just doing it alone. I have been at U.H for five years, I am graduating this semester, and the group project for this class has to be the worst in any that I have ever had. The project was NOT the problem... it was the people I had to work with that was a NIGHTMARE!!! -In future semester, let people do there presentation alone, it is less time consuming.

Send out more reminders about due dates
Midway through, she changed the weekly due dates which was good for all student, and opened a larger time frame for a handful of us - good move for listening to your students. Teaching style is good, but could work on keeping students updated on grades, keeping students motivated, and being more interactive with students. Bad-on synch sessions. On Tuesday/Thursday from 3pm - 8pm I had class so wasn't able to attend any. If you're gonna do a synch session, do it all week or don't make it a requirement because it takes much more time and effort to do alternate assignments and it isn't fair to those who can't attend because you'll only do it those days. Another online teacher of mine made it not required and also did it throughout the day so we could attend.
Have the possibility to be more flexible with synchronous sessions. Provide more study materials for quizzes and tests.
The synchronious sessions were a little buggy at times.

I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone trying to find a 100 level elective online, IF that group project is still required.

At times it can get difficult to keep up with due dates. It's a little harder to keep up with because everything is on your own and you have to be that much more responsible.
Group presentation was due weeks before topic was covered in class. In an introductory course, this is just plain silly. Communication of who's/which group topic was due in upcoming teleconference session was lacking.

Great course. i love this class and learned so much. I cannot thank Banna enough I am more than happy to have taken this class and learned so much. Great learning environment. Great Teacher. She is awesome. Perfect class. there is no reason not to take this class. Glad and grateful to have taken it online. Banna is great, listens well. She accommodates deadlines if you need them to be. I am a working student and she works great with students who have to work full time to support self. Very admirable quality. She is very understanding.

Jinan was an effective online instructor. It made me more of an independent learner which is ultimately a plus, but I felt I had access to her if necessary.
I loved the "weekly module" which allowed us to see future powerpoint/pdf slides of upcoming subjects/material.
Learning about the different vitamins/minerals and what types of fruits and veggies have them. Also the body systems and how each enzymes, etc are broken down.

Quizzes were overly difficult. Questions are mostly exam caliber in that they didn't simply test acquisition of new knowledge but the application of several different concepts in answering a single question. Several weekly quiz questions relied on information barely touched on in readings and presentation slides (textbook sidebar/auxiliary subsections).

Nothing needs to be changed. She accepted that we needed the time things to be due from Saturday to Sunday and that worked out better for everyone. This should stay the same. Sunday midnight due date for all things, not Saturday.
Seriously, group presentations due weeks before the topic is covered in an introductory course this is just plain silly.

I had a hard time with some of the quiz/test questions. Some seemed 'tricky', or not super straight forward. I know quizes and tests are supposed to assess a students knowledge, but I felt that some of the questions could have been simplified while still serving their purpose.

First of all, the presentations since we had to critically analyzed the articles, and also sharing our personal thoughts about the articles because it was enriching.
The critique of publications and discussion.
I enjoyed the new topics each week. I was able to learn more about child and adolescent nutrition and evaluate research in a critical manner.
Prodding students to prepare questions prior to each class really pushed me to not just read the article, but to reflect on it and formulate opinions about it.

15. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I think that instead of discussion questions the assigments could be a comment, a brief reflection or analysis as a way to identify the strenghts and limitations in a regular basis. This is my opinion about the discussion questions because most of the time the speaker has the same information than the audience as we all read the article, so the discussion questions sometimes needed more background about how the research was conducted. Many times the discussion questions could be answered just by making a little research by ourselves. However, the discussion questions are definetely great when the speaker is the author of the article since they can provide more information and clear any doubts.

Certain things to look for or pointers because I think I could have a done a better job on the article critiques having known more. Combine readings of the unique needs of children/adolescence at the different developmental stages with the age group discussed/covered during lecture/presentations. In my opinion, this activity will help to identify steps or thoughts to consider when conducting research in children.
It is only a one credit class and the homework for the credit was eccessive. Having to do a presentation, 2 article critiques, and homework questions weekly was too much versus the amount of credits offered. The presentation and homework questions would be sufficient and the other points could offered by in-class participation, like asking questions after presentations. There was some students who never said anything all semester long.
