14. What changes would you make in the lectures?
At first, the lectures were not very helpful as we were left to do group work for the first half of the semester. This was very frustrating since the first part of the semester is when we have very limited time due to the busy schedule and felt as though lecture time was not being utilized. After receiving feedback, Prof. Greywolf changed her style and now lectures and shows videos to help explain the concepts of the mechanisms of action. This is MUCH more helpful and it helps our understanding of Pathophysiology.
It would have been nice if the Pharm lectures correlated with the Patho lectures. I know the Professors were striving to obtain this but it only happened on a few occasions. I did enjoy and learned a lot from the virtual lectures with Dr. Farmer but it was kind of awkward to come to lecture and watch a skyped lecture of another Professor.
I think that the course material should have coincided with the material that was being presented in pathophysiology. It would be extremely helpful if we had discussion about the most commonly prescribed medications for each disease process and the disorders discussed in class. In addition to the commonly prescribed drugs, it would have been helpful if we were presented with the typical dosages and routes that the drugs are given. The text book is organized in a strange fashion and contains many outdated drugs that are not used in the current clinical setting.
Having in-class exams would probably have helped to guide my learning. The resources available were great, however; I would have wanted materials put together by the instructor versus materials straight from the publisher.
I would make the course fully online and no in class lectures.
Lectures were not helpful. I probably would have learned more if we had done medication profiles during class--group work to understand drug type, class, purpose, and nursing considerations. We did most of our learning through adaptive quizzing & the online class.
I really like Dr. Greywolf and feel that she knows the material well. I also like the Evolve course, but there's a certain disconnect between lectures and what we were tested on in Evolve. She would tell us not to focus on specific drugs or specific adverse effects, but to learn the classes and mechanisms of action. Then, Evolve would focus almost exclusively on specific adverse effects or specific nursing process actions required for specific drugs. I would suggest that the lectures better reflect this discrepancy. Also, incorporating learning activities in class designed to help us learn the specific drugs (at least for a subset of drugs in the "Top 100 prescribed" arena) would greatly enhance the lectures.
The adaptive quizzing does not facilitate the learning process. I find myself spending so much time looking up answers, but not really learning the content. I understand that learning the mechanisms of drugs will prepare us as future NPs, but at this stage I feel like we should focus on learning and memorizing the drugs, their side effects, and nursing considerations in preparation for the NCLEX.
Using Dr. Farmers videos more often. Those lectures were the ones that really stuck
I think that this course would make a great on-line course.
I would suggest working in concert with the other program professors from the beginning of the semester.
It would be more beneficial if this course was a hybrid-online course and that the class meets once a month. Elsevier's evolve adaptive quizzing and modules are great resources and increased my learning as well as critical thinking skills.
I would make this an online course.
Have the lectures supplement the readings from the book. Teach the lectures so they are geared towards passing the NCLEX rather than future APRN material.
Dr. Greywolf was a compassionate instructor --she was also very interested and accommodating to determining what resources would best impact our learning. She took student feedback to heart and made a sincere effort to meet everyone's asks of the class. It came to light about mid term that this course was being piloted as a online course, which I think it could be. I think that there would need to be some more rigorous testing so as to determine and encourage memorization--as with pharmacology this is the only way to learn the medications. Dr. Greywolf utilized a variety of methods to lecture, but the best were always one where she lectured--as it is evident her mastery of the material is vast.
Everyone should be treated equally. Just as important, lectures should be your own and not coming from a professor on Maui. His videos gave a lot of great information, but I would have liked to hear more from you.
I especially like when we have Dr. Farmer lecture viewings that are followed up by Dr. Greywolf's lectures. I think Dr. Farmer's videos provide a good general overview of the information and Dr. Greywolf's expertise and clinical experience helps to solidify the main ideas and focus in on key points.
15. Other comments:
Dr. Greywolf is passionate and informative in her areas of expertise. One-on-one she is very helpful and knowledgeable. However, we were left to learn independently for a majority of the subjects that she is not as "expert" on. She is a great teacher when she is passionate about the subject. Her class dramatically improved by the end of the semester than from the beginning.
I do appreciate how accommodating Professor Greywolf was to our needs and concerns. She is very knowledgeable in the subject and I know she made adjustments in her lecture to fulfill our needs which was appreciated. I suggest perhaps small exams every 2 weeks or so, in class, closed book. This would've helped me stay on track with the readings and actually retain information. Adaptive quizzing and the modules are valuable resources but Elsevier needs to proofread their questions and not include drugs that are no longer in the market on their quizzes.
Dr. Greywolf is very knowledgable in this subject area. However, the materials presented in this course don't entirely reflect that. I would have been enjoyable to have listened and absorb to her take on the material.
I loved the Elsevier adaptive quizzing for this course.
Dr. Greywolf is kind, and obviously very knowledgeable about this subject. She might benefit from training on teaching adult learners. I think we only scratched the surface of what we could learn from her vast knowledge & experience. I did not enjoy watching videos in class, but it was better than the very, very dry lectures.
I enjoyed the content and the lectures, but feel like I could have been challenged a bit more. The adaptive quizzing was a great resource and I enjoyed using it, but I feel there needed to be another measure of learning such as exams or in class quizzes.
Access to the adaptive learning from Elsevier would have been more helpful if we got it earlier in the semester. I think I would have used it more.
Although helpful that Professor Greywolf is so amenable to the students needs I would suggest setting more firm boundaries for the class so that it progress more smoothly.
Dr. Greywolf is very knowledgeable in pharmacology and considerate of students' needs. I really enjoyed her lectures, however, I think it would be more effective and useful of my time if this course was 1-2 hours ; reserving the remaining time to do Elsevier's study modules and adaptive quizzing.
Have several exams and a final to force students to learn the material in addition to the adaptive quizzing.
I really appreciate Dr. Greywolf being so open to our ideas on the course and resources available to us. Dr. Greywolf is very cognizant of the fact that we have other classes and she always makes sure our stress level is manageable. I am questionable about how much I learn from adaptive quizzing. I think I am the type of student that needs more of a push to keep up with the material. While in-class closed-book quizzes may add a significant amount of stress to us as students, I think it might be beneficial in the long run.

The course content is fairly bland and boring, which makes it a tough class to teach.
It was a pleasure to work with Cynthia this semester. I finally learned how to critique an article because of her help. She was also very flexible with turning in homework late if we had an exam very close to the due date.
She was an excellent professor, and I felt supported by her. However, compared to what I heard the other Nursing Research students that took this course from another professor this semester said, we had a LOT more writing than they did. I think the amount of writing that was required of us this semester was more than appropriate for a 3-credit NON-writing intensive class. And I didn't feel as though this extra writing increased my learning compared to what the other students did which was just answering the questions required for an article critique rather than writing a full paper. I also kind of felt like the papers were graded a little more harshly than they needed to be. Although I got good grades, others I know didn't and after seeing their papers I'm not sure why. Especially because we weren't actually "taught" the specific ways she wanted us to write the critiques. Other than this though I really enjoyed the class, and know it will contribute to my future as a nurse.
This would be a good class to do online. The class time did not necessarily assist my learning. There was too much down time and unnecessary group work. It would be more interesting to you use the time watching something interesting or educational. Less group work would be helpful.
This class should be online AND should be a WI course. There is NO reason to waste student's time when they have a heavy load with their other classes.
Dr. Greywolf is extremely knowledgeable. She nurtured our learning by being flexible, considerate, and supportive.
Thank you Dr. Greywolf. I learned a lot from you.
Projects utilized teamwork and application of course content.
Dr. Greywolf is very knowledgeable and passionate about nursing research. Her concern for her students is apparent and she takes the time to listen and accommodate to their needs as best as she can which is very much appreciated. N360 had a tendency to overshadow this class in terms of priority which is a shame because I was not able to dedicate much time to really learn the content. to make the information more easily attainable Dr. Greywolf might consider creating a concise guide to the most important topics and concepts and present those points during class rather than lecturing from the powerpoint. Allowing us to use class time to work on the fantasy project was also very much appreciated however.
Thank you Cynthia, I learned a lot from your course.
I strongly feel that this should be a hybrid class where the student could work mostly online with a few in class days to solidify the material or to present projects. I feel that the 3 hour class was most often filled with discussion that could have been presented in a forum discussion, ppt and book reading manner. Dr. Greywolf did her best to make sure we understood the information and was a pleasure to be in class with.

She tried her hardest to help relieve some of our stress by modifying the scheduled presentations. My only criticism of this course is that there was some repetition in the course content and it overlapped with material covered in previous classes. I think because of this overlap, this class may have run well as an online course and this could have helped as people struggled to fit in clinical hours. However, overall i really liked that cynthia Greywolf offered experiences and discussion that was practical and relevant to real life situations. I am looking forward to the final class on how to perform well in a nursing interview. I feel that this will be very useful. It is this type of experience that I feel demonstrates Cynthia Greywolf's empathy for our situation and her willingness to try to provide meaningful and useful learning experiences.
This course should have been an online seminar, rather than a 4 hours a week, 7 week long course. All materials were assigned as home reading, and the TBL was tedious and unnecessary. Class discussion dragged on and tedious repetition of material made it hard to stay alert. TBL in general seems like a waste of time, since all the reading is done at home, and the instructor only lectured once. We wasted our time in class doing the IRAT and then discussing the same questions to answer the TRAT, then again doing the same questions using the clicker, then going over the answers to the same questions with the instructor. Doing the reading on my own was fine, but the class was a waste of time, and a real drag in such a busy semester with clinicals.
I really enjoyed this class. The quizzes and activities were relevant to the reading assignments and course. "Systems error", hmm...I really never would have thought that was the case. I've always been a firm believer in the individuals accountability in regards to issues in patient safety and care. As in everyone has a duty to do their part and if they are incompetent or don't understand the importance of their position than they are the cause of health care failure. "System failure" an excellent way of looking at healthcare; not to downgrade the importance of individual accountability though.
I enjoyed this class more when we read prior to class, took the test and then received a lecture on the material. I understand that other students asked Cynthia to change this because they wanted the lecture first but I did not find this helpful because it simply made the readings redundant instead of supplemental to an interesting lecture that expanded on the points we read. I appreciate that Cynthia was so open to change and listened to my classmates but I really enjoyed her the way her class was run before she implemented this change.
Dr. Greywolf was a great instructor. She was well prepared and reasoned well with us. She was thorough and thoughtfully organized the course. I appreciate that she was understanding and open to our perspectives. Although we did not have much time to read the number of articles selected, the reading material was interesting and pertinent to what we were going over in class. I very much enjoyed this course. The only thing problem is the limited time for this course giving us a limited time for assignments. Also, some of the answers on the TBL were not correct.
This class may be be better as an online/hybrid class. Due to the demanding hour requirements and variability in student schedules, making it to class was trying at times and took away from available clinical hours. I did not find TBLs to be beneficial and reviewing the tests three times, last time being iclicker (after all answers were given already) was not productive or a good use of class time.
Thank you!
Great teacher! She is very organized and is very accommodating to her students! Thank you for a great year!
I think the class was too short. It was hard to have the QI paper/powerpoint done in 7 weeks when most of our time was spent working our clinical rotations. I really liked the Escape Fire video and the readings related to that topic, but I felt that the other readings were not as helpful. I also dislike the TBLs and felt that there were some questions that were not covered in the readings.

Maybe to include cut back on some pictures? I'm not too sure because I honestly found them to be great!
no changes
The lectures were great in covering the necessary topics and concepts for exams.
I took the course from Cynthia Greywolf with the hopes that individualized teaching would be from her. Instead it was apparent that the course was identical regardless of who taught it. I understand it is important to ensure that certain information is taught, however, I feel that I would have learned more had it not been a "cookie cutter" course.

Excellent instructor and very well organized course. I enjoyed the discussions and feedback from the instructor.
While evidenced based practice is important, the emphasis that was placed on this was too much. The emphasis and course in general should be more well-rounded.
Use of undergraduate book for a graduate level course set the stage for a course that was a waste of my time. After taking this class, I am no closer to being prepared for boards than before this course. Dr Greywolf should not be instructing at the graduate level.
I felt this class was over structured. Too many projects, quizes, postings. All the assignments preventing me from really understanding learning the material. Online discussion is redundent and there is too much focus on EBP. I felt like i was retaking N620. The instructor was not consistant with posting materials and suplements on laumlima. Quizes were either word for word from a presentation or text or it was rather unclear from what material the questions were originating from, as it wasn't covered in the assignedd readings.
Very timely in email responses. Very sensitive to students' needs. Highly knowledgeable about subject matter. Would recommend to have class in-person to facilitate learning
I appreciated the evidence based practice focus. Sometimes I am not sure how valuable online discussion was, since it could feel like we all were providing similar responses. In the future, I would try to eliminate from discussion the very narrow factual questions (like "what are the differences between delirium and dementia?") and instead use only the open- ended questions like "what has been your experience working with this type of patient?" or the EBP questions. The posts resulting from those open ended questions were very interesting and helpful. I also wanted to hear and learn much more from Dr. Greywolf directly-- perhaps at the end of every week she could have posted a summary of key points or pearls we should take away on that week's topic. Otherwise, we are relying too much on our fellow students to uncover new knowledge. I would have liked to have heard more from an expert & experienced practitioner.
This course seemed like a lot of busy work. It's almost the same class as 640.
Dr. Greywolf was wonderful about constantly asking us what she can do to better the course. I appreciate that she values our feedback. After thinking about it, by simply answering questions, readings each other's posts became redundant. As a result, I do not feel that many people took the time to read each other's posts. I think that one valuable way to keep the class engaged is to split us up into small groups of 3-4. Then provide us a case study and ask us to discuss and develop an assessment and plan within a small group. This way we are thinking about how we will address multiple diagnosis while considering a geriatric patient. All in all, thank you for all your hard work this semester. I learned a lot from my classmates' PowerPoint presentations.
very useful class in terms of learning level of evidence to different treatment approaches to conditions pertinent to older population.

19. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Excellent clinical experiences, fun reflection papers
I liked being in the clinical setting with one-on-one learning by a mentor.
I really enjoyed working one-on-one with my preceptor. It allowed me opportunities I never would have received otherwise when doing clinicals with 9 other students in other clinicals. Being the only student on the unit allowed me all and a wider array of the opportunities that were made available throughout the shift and the duration of the clinical rotation. Also, doing a complete 12 hr shift helped me to become accustomed to the work hours and learn how to manage my time. I especially enjoyed working on a unit that I hope to work in in the future--it allowed me to "train" and actually see what it is like to work on the unit.
Learning on a unit was more valuable than learning from a textbook. I feel better prepared to enter the workforce because of complex.
Everything
Conference meeting, clinical, and quality management project.
Professor Greywolf was extremely helpful and made me feel comfortable speaking my mind.
Professor Greywolf was always available and is a compassionate instructor. She was easy to talk to and always willing to help/answer questions.
The clinical experience. Practice of independent work which helped to build my confidence and competence. The NCLEX questions used in class activities.
20. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Not enough clinical time with Prof Greywolf
The Capstone project because I felt that clinical experience and related work was more beneficial.
There are many aspects where expectations varied from instructor to instructor--for instance, how the powerpoint should be formatted differs from what was presented in class and what the instructor wants so it got a little confusing as to which to follow. Also, I think the syllabus should clarify the hours--instead of saying students will be given up to ____ hrs for conferences, etc., put that the student will need to acquire ___ conference hrs. First option sounds like we can go up until 20 hrs but it is not necessary.
nothing.
None
The issue of finding one preceptor to follow. It was difficult following numerous RNs and adjusting to their standards and getting to know each one of them on a personal level.
I felt Professor Greywolf was not given enough support from the rest of the department. She is new to the program and so she was a little unfamiliar with the project which made it harder on us to do it correctly.
I understand that it can't be helped, but I didn't like doing the clinical and managerial reflection papers. Though, it did encourage me to explore the various issues in the nursing profession; so that was interesting.
