10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Doing the actual critiques were most valuable.
Just learning how to critique articles and understanding what makes something valuable and noteworthy
Critical thinking and ethical issues and research.
Research is a new topic for me and Professor Delnat taught this class well where I was able to fully understand the topics introduced and that's what I thought was valuable. Also the one-on-one session I had with her to go over my critiques was valuable because it improved my skills in writing a critique and also improved my APA skills.
I finally obtained skills to access articles for research papers. The weekly quizzes and the I-clicker tests promoted learning.
Doing the Ethics game was a great way of learning about topics. Too bad we have to purchase it.
The group work is the most valuable aspect of the class.
It was adequate in helping me to understand how important nursing research is to EBP. Prof. Delnat was an excellent instructor. She worked with the students well throughout the semester. She made time in her schedule to help me one-one with feedback for my papers and always answered my questions. She should be an motivational speaker for the incoming nursing classes!!!!
Critiquing journal articles.
The instructor
The most valuable aspect was working together in groups because it helped to develop teamwork and communication.
learning how to use the data bases to look up articles. Learning on how to critique an article.
Ethics discussion and the examples of performing studies to help further research in nursing.
The aspects of the course that were most valuable were that Professor Delnat is very knowledgable of the material, she comes to class prepared, and she is excited to teach research! This made learning easier because she was very passionate about the subject which made learning fun.
Discussion of topics in class and writing critiques
Learning about the different kinds of research, the variables, how nursing research is conducted, and writing critical analysis of journal articles. I also enjoyed the i-Clicker questions, as that gave me a better understanding of the lectured material.
I found that when professor Delnat gave lectures in class, it was very helpful in understanding the daunting but crucial task of nursing research. I liked the iclicker questions because it really showed you what you knew and what you didn't know. Furthermore, her explanations about the answers really helped solidify the material. I also thought the APA tip of the day was very useful because we are always writing papers that need to be in APA format.
APA stuff and groups and how to find articles correctly.
The lecture and group activites were very helpful as well as the iclicker questions.
Learning how to critique a research article gave me the ability to decide on my own if research article is "gold" or "trash". I also valued the APA tips given which have helped me tremendously my writing intensive courses.
I learned how to write APA format. Also APA format was needed to continue nursing education; therefore, this is one of the valuable things that I had in the class.
The research aspects were the most helpful. I did not get a lot from the ethics portion of the class.
11. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I guess nothing
N/A
There wasn't anything I found to be an issue.
Weekly classroom meetings
Doing the work in the workbooks.
I had no problems with this course.
I feel that the work done in groups was the least valuable. While working together in groups was great in developing teamwork and communication, the assignments done during them were difficult and did not aid my learning of the material very well.
While having the "hot topics" assignment was important, I feel that it should have been integrated within a class to help with questions that came up during the assignment.
N/A
Quizzes and graded theory online exercise
Some of the small group activities were least valuable.
Quizzes before the lectures.
I found everything valuable because I can use everything I learned in this class in my future nursing career.
NA
The ethics portion and some of our in class activities were not useful. The Ethics Game was a complete waste of time. I did not like the format, the program, or the way they posed questions. Having in class ethics debates would have been so much more interesting and valuable, and it would have saved the students $32.

19. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I think it is better to have lecture during class so students can ask questions. The powerpoints were okay but the in class lectures were more thourough.
I thinking having a small section for lectures would be valuable.
N/A.
Professor Delnat is doing a good job and I think she should continue teaching the way she's teaching.
Have assignments and presentations provided and accessible to students a week ahead if time instead of 2 hours before class. Be knowledgeable in the subject so you can explain it in another way that is understandable. Many explanations were poorly thought out and made me even more confused.
I think that lecturing before taking the quiz's made the quiz's better and more understandable.
None. She did an excellent job!
Having quizzes at the end of class after the lecture. Sometimes we would complete the reading, but still be confused about the topic. Being quizzed on material that we were confused felt counterproductive. Towards the end of the semester, she began quizzing after completing the lecture and many students agreed that the lecture was extremely helpful when discussing difficult topics.

Make quizzes very inline with required literature
I liked how Professor Delnat gave her lecture, PRIOR to administering the weekly quizes. By doing that, it stimulated my mind to pay attention, and to also recall information that I have read from the textbook. I like the idea of how she added a password feature in order to take the quiz. This definitely motivated students to attend every weekly lecture!! Continue to do that for future N363 classes, so that all students attend the lectures!!
More extra credit.
May have more practice in doing a critique as a group activity or go over doing a critique with a sample.
Her class was will organized and I am able to absorve this hard contents within limited time effectively.
I think this course would be great online. Professor Delnat is very good at presenting voice-over PowerPoint and there is so much technology for distance learning it kind of seems like a waste to meet in-person. Furthermore, I think that the ethics and research parts of the class should be better combined. The ethics work just seemed like it was thrown in rather than integrated. I also feel that the research portion of the class was more important than the ethics parts. When I run into an ethical dilemma in real practice I highly doubt we will refer to the information I learned in this class. However, I guarantee that I will use the research information I learned for the rest of my life. One possible solution would be to critique articles that have an ethics focus.

23. Other comments:
Sometimes it was difficult to do group work because some people were faster than others, so some students were lost. The group work was unproductive when I was lagging behind the other students. Everyone was rushing to present material.
Understanding, flexible.
She was a great teacher
Very good.
The instructor seemed overwhelmed with her own educational deadlines that she was ill prepared to teach our class. She sent cryptic messages about our being dishonest and "cheating" on quizzes or assignments which was very inappropriate. She did not answer messages sent to her via email. This class shouldve been an online class. I felt I wasted my time and money (for parking) by attending class in manoa.
You are a very passionate about research and i commend you for that. I had a great time spending my Saturday's with you.
She is an excellent instructor. Highly recommend her. She is very enthusiastic with her work and it shows in her teaching. :)
I liked how the class had a laid-back vibe and we could express ourselves.
Great motherly feel. It helps my absorption of material from her style of teaching where she teaches to the classes needs.
She seems a little scatter brained at times, but knows research very very well. I think I received an unfair grade because of her poor communication/clarification. She uses another professors syllabus with due dates that are not accurate. She can seem irritated in certain emails. But she is professional in class and has a lot of knowledge.
Thank you, Professor Delnat for a productive semester! I learned a lot, and I thoroughly enjoyed your class. Lastly, I would like to take the time to thank you for being extremely understanding while we lost our classmate, Helen. It allowed the students to cope effectively and it made the situation a little easier to deal with. Thank you again because I really appreciated your understanding of the situation.
Overall, I had a great time having Professor Catherine Delnat be the instructor for this course. She graded my journal critique assignments very well, and very fairly. She also was very nice to give the entire class TONS of deadline extensions for our assignments. I also enjoyed the Ethics Game assignment, as it taught me how to use decision making skills, as a nurse, in various scenarios. I also liked how Catherine gave the entire class the opportunity to do extra credit work, to boost our course/class score. She also had a very nice personality where I could relate to her, and approach her without feeling intimidated. Lastly, she was great at responding to my emails pertaining to questions about our assignments. I praise the nursing school administration for adding such a great instructor to the school's faculty group.
Prior to this class, I did not have very much interest in research. However, through Professor Delnats' teaching style, depth of knowledge and enthusiasm, I have much more appreciation for this subject. Her class has helped me to critically think about the reliability and validity of a research article. I thoroughly enjoyed Professor Delnat's class and recommend her to future nursing students.
Professor Delnat is an awesome instructor! I loved her class.
I really enjoyed having the powerpoints with instructors lecture. I was able to playback sections to clarify the information when I was confused. I know it took a lot of work by Prof. Delnat to make the PowerPoints with lecture added and I wanted to let her know it was really appreciated. I also appreciated Prof. Delnat's organization and reliablity.
Ms. Catherine Delnat was really caring person. She shows concern to students and always available to meet and discuss what we have difficulty or concern. I learned a lot from her. She was always supportive.
Professor Delnat was a great professor! She made me feel like she really cared about my well-being and education.

20. Other comments:
Professor Delnat was the best instructor in this entire course. She was the only instructor who I felt comfortable talking to. She was always approachable and very heart-warming. She was very understanding of our heavy coursework and was very flexible with due dates. I was very appreciative of that. She always communicated via text, email, or phone calls and was always available to meet. Next semester will be losing out on a great clinical instructor. She was the only instructor that I could trust and could confide in with problems this semester. If every instructor was as understanding and loving as Professor Delnat, the UHMSONDH would have an outstanding reputation. With TBL & some of the other instructors, I feel as if the student satisfaction will go down and so will the reputation of the school. Keep professors like Professor Delnat around and I know you'll have a higher satisfaction from students.
Professor Delnat was one of the few great instructors this semester. She was always willing to help and wanted all her students to succeed.
I feel fortunate to have Professor Delnat as my instructor. She is always availible for extra help if I needed it on my projects, helped to guide me on my clinical floor, and so much more. She is an amazing professor who truely cares about her students and teaches us the thing we need to know to be competent nurses. I feel like I learned a lot from her and she really helped to put thing into persepective. I would highly recommend other students to take her as well.
Professor Delnat was so supportive. I felt really stressed out at times because of all the problems with my placement and the management. She reassured me and guided me through these times. She was always available to talk over the phone or meet with at school. She was always so busy, but always found time for me and I appreciated that so much. She always told me that she wanted me to have fun and enjoy this semester and I feel that she truly had our best interest at heart. It was very encouraging having her during this frustrating semester.
Professor Delnat, was a great escape this semester. She was helpful to our clinical and helped to give us great advice for our futures in nursing.
Professor Delnat was an exceptional clinical instructor by showing compassion for students. She provided help when needed, followed up with students regularly, communicated efficiently, and had a strong involvement in preparing students for the professional field of nursing. I would highly recommend Professor Delnat, she is an EXCELLENT teacher!!!
