The Mastering Physics homework assignments were very helpful, but many times the "simple" assignments were not so simple, especially when we have not covered the complete topic in class. Your willingness to extend the deadlines was appreciated, but toward the end, things were piling up faster and faster Having 4 assignments total (written and online) due at the same time was very time-consuming and stressful. Since the deadlines for the online homework are not as important to you, maybe you could post the homework prior to starting the topic covered, and have it due a week after the topic is finished being covered. This would give us ample time to complete the assignments, while allowing us to understand what we are learning. 4 online questions turns into a long night as many of these questions have multiple parts to them.
Overall Dr. Maricic was a very effective professor. She communicated topics clearly and concisely which made her lectures easy to fallow. The demonstrations done in class (both simulated and physical) helped students understand the concepts in real world situations. I suggest that the mastering homework assignments be aligned better with the topics being discussed in class. Mastering homework often included topics not yet covered in lecture which made completion of these assignments stressful and confusing. However, the topics of written homework assignments were always discussed in class prior to the assignment's deadline. Also, as a student i prefer quizzes on paper not by the iClicker program. The material included on quizzes and exams were fair and were reflective of the examples given in class.
Professor Maricic was really helpful in helping me grasp physics.
Everything is fine!Thank you!
My favorite Physics professor I have had at UH Manoa. She doesn't skim through the powerpoints, but actually makes it a point to explain everything. She is very knowledgable and is always able to answer students' questions. Exams were a bit easy, but I would definitely take another class from her again.
Instructor was great, but curriculum was packed forcing the instructor to teach at a very quick pace.
I really like how you use analogies with your lectures. It made the entire a lot easier to visualize and understand all the concepts.
She was a great, funny and understanding professor! She was more concerned with me understanding the material and just getting the homework done rather than due dates and such. Was very lenient when I didn't finish homework on time, which I loved because sometimes things happen and finally a professor understands! It was also very easy to set up a time to meet. Physics is hard for me, and this class was challenging, however I would definitely recommend her as a professor.
I think she did a very good job in teaching the class. My only complaint is that she spend more time reviewing for tests and going over practice problems in order for the class to perform better and be able to grasp the concepts better
Sometimes hard to follow in class
Homework problems were helpful, and were a much needed grade boost. Perhaps next semester make sure the online homework material was covered in class before the homework is due. Sometimes the homework would cover material from upcoming lectures and was difficult without having learned the material yet.
I liked how you made the class resources accessible on Laulima; very helpful. The combination of both online and paper homework were sometimes overly excessive.
None.
She's just awesome. That's it.
Best physics teacher I've ever had!
So here's the thing... I didn't think it would ever be possible to have a science based teacher any student would ever ACTUALLY like. Most are very boring and plain and just reread you the same material from the book. But Jelena was an exceptional teacher. She really engaged the class and worked out problems TOGETHER with the students. She gave plenty of problems to work out with us and help us understand and better prepare for the exams and quizzes. She never made us feel dumb or stupid and truly encouraged us to fully understand and grasp the concept rather than focus on getting a grade. She was so enthusiastic and captivated the class' attention. She actually made physics FUN! shocking, right? I leave her class feeling better about myself and find myself wanting to excel and do better with each and every assignment and test given. I never felt discouraged once. Her class structure and grading was perfect and I couldn't have asked for a better semester. It's the first time I wanted to move on to the next level of physics for MYSELF and not just because it's required. I can't thank her enough.
Maricic is an effective communicator, and interacts well with the class. I learned a lot in her class, and made me enjoy learning physics, instead of dreading it. Overall she is an excellent professor.
Overall, she was a great professor! She has done a great job teaching such a difficult topic and is very caring and understanding of her students. I believe she fully prepares all of her students!
One thing that could have really helped was giving the example problems for the midterm/final 1.5-2 weeks before the midterm. I felt rushed and not always prepared for the midterms since the example problems were given to us so late.
hardest course ever taken.....the instructor done an excellent job on presenting the course materials to the students and especially to those that are new to these concept.......
I certainly learned a lot in this course and although the material was very challenging I gained a good understanding of electricity and magnetism than I did before.
You are very great and passionate about teaching this course. I really enjoyed having you. I personally did feel that the mastering physics compared to the written homework was a lot easier and perhaps not necessary relevant to the test questions. Other then that I really liked this class
Overall, professor Maricic was an outstanding physics professor. She had a very clear understanding of the material and was able to communicate with us effectively. She made very complex concepts easier to understand and always came to class very positive and energetic. She never came unprepared and always had demonstrations/online experiments to show the class. My physics teacher last year literally said in the class she was only here for the research and showed that she cared very little about the students. So you can imagine after that bulls**t I was extremely happy I got to take this course from Jelena.

Use Laulima Gradebook
This is the worst class I have taken at UH. Instructor was very hard to follow and didn't explain concepts very well. Practice problems were rushed and, unless you are sitting on the side of the room where she's writing on the chalkboard you cant see anything she's writing. In the very beginning of the semester she used an overhead, but she kept covering it up as she wrote, then she'd show the solution for half a second and then move on. Jelena REALLY needs to figure this one out. Also, she doesn't even make her own slides, she uses the ones provided by the textbook company! These slides are so cluttered with information that they are extremely difficult to follow. In the very beginning of the semester Jelena assigned homework problems in the 13th edition of a textbook available at the library. I have the same textbook but the 12th edition and, although the content doesn't change much, all the problems are different in the two textbooks. So I had to spend $140 on a new textbook. Then, a couple weeks later, Jelena decided not to assign problems from this textbook but she'd post homework problems online. Unfortunately she told us this AFTER the library was no longer accepting returns. Pearson must pay her for using their products, which they constantly update so that you have to buy the latest edition. You also have to buy an iclicker and have a mastering physics account (both of which are not free). Students are poor, I can't afford to be buying all this new stuff every year, and it's ridiculous that it's all required for the course......until Jelena changes her mind after you've spent your money.
The suggested problems for the midterms were very helpful in exam preparation. Exams were moderately difficult, but reasonable. The online homework was more or less useless and did not aid my learning. Going over HW in class would have helped. Quizzes did not also help.
Focuses on material, doesn't go off on tangent. Stays on schedule
Very friendly, easy to approach with questions. Shows great problem examples in class and uses interactive/visual examples as well. One thing I would say wasn't too helpful was the online homework where we had to come up with different formulas. It's a little too tedious and time consuming and I feel it doesn't really benefit our overall conceptual understanding of the material.
I didn't like how this class basically ran off of the mastering physics curriculum. In my opinion, it worked mostly against my understanding as there were too many times I found myself confused and wasn't able to answer my questions in the lecture slides. The homework and lectures were centered on it, and I feel that there wasn't much effort to mediate or stress key points that we needed to know which the pre-made lectures didn't already do. Overall, the pace was really fast and definitely felt rushed at many times. One thing that was really helpful were the applets that demonstrated what we were learning.
I enjoyed this class hope to see you around campus. Have an awesome summer.
Dr. Maricic is a wonderful professor. Love the fact that she uploads everything so everything covered in class is easily accessible. Makes going to lecture worth it, Can we funny sometimes. She wants her students to learn something and not cheat their way though the class. Only complaint is that she needs more office hours. thats it.
I loved her. She is very nice and she is really passionate about her field of study!
The online homework was a great help in understanding the material. I would think i understood it in class but when i sat down to do some problems i found myself using the hint button a lot. It cleared it all up, often reminded me of things you said in class. I will certainly look for you if i need another physics coarse.
This was a very well organized course, and Jelena Maricic provides a very spirited introduction to E&M-Optics, accessible even for non-engineers and non-physicists. Her chapter hand-outs and selected homework problems were very helpful. She made herself available to help clarify difficult concepts. I felt that she was easy to approach. She was very knowledgeable about the subject matter and able to disseminate it clearly, and with enthusiasm. I will definitely recommend her to those taking PHYS 272 at a future time.
Less homework?
She has a very good understanding for the course material but I feel like she does not convey the key points that much. She skips some steps which is alright since it is a pre-requisite heavy class but sometimes does not offer enough meaning in answers to selected excersises. Sometimes hard to understand because of the accent but seems very knowledgeable. Overall, this class was ok
Powerpoint slides were very helpful.
The class was mind bogglingly slow paced in my opinion, but I believe this was for the best in the end.
Great, interesting course.
Professor Maricic proved to be a great professor. This is a hard subject, but she was very thorough and did a lot of examples. Homework was not overwhelming, but it was a good amount. She was also lighthearted, but serious at the same time. Class was a pleasant experience. I will recommend her to anyone taking this course.
The mastering physics homework is almost always on material that hasn't been covered in class yet. I feel it would be better to teach the material first and then have the homework after. Also your handwriting is hard to read sometimes
Overall, great professor. Exams are straightforward and pace of homeworks, chapters, and quzzes are perfect! :)
Her visual aids (power points) were very clustered and unclear. Couldn't quite understand the main point she was getting at. Handwriting is not very good. It sometimes looks like a different language. Examples are hard to follow as work is not organized.
The course went well. I liked the format, tests, and grading style. I however did not benefit from Mastering Physics homework.
Professor Maricic demonstrated that she completely grasps all the content that she is expected to teach us. She always tried her best to simplify and explain an otherwise, extremely difficult course. Strengths - The weekly homework, daily online homework, and quizzes made sure we didn't fall behind. - Tests were perfect. They were tailored towards making sure we understood the basics of each chapter rather than stressing us out with extremely tricky, complicated calculations/word problems. Constructive Remarks: - Some Powerpoints had slides that were too packed/busy with math equations, graphs, diagrams, etc. It would help if you spread them more evenly or across several more slides. - Maybe consider three midterms instead of two to help spread out the content and/or the weight of each on our grades.
Thank you for a great class! Very enjoyable
I extremely disliked having a substitute teacher so often, I was not able to learn the material very well when we had a different teacher. I would also recommend writing out everything and NEVER using the powerpoint. It is rather difficult to understand physics through the PPT although it was helpful to have online. However writing on the board would have caused more people to come to class and participate, I believe. The teacher seemed nice and was always well dressed. Probably one of the nicest clothing I have seen on a professor. However I could not learn very well through the PPTs and although I did several problems I was never able to do very well on the tests. I recommend switching from PPT to chalk board and giving more than 2 midterms to give students a higher chance of success. I like the teacher but this class was a nightmare! (probably due to the difficulty of the material)
Chapter powerpoints were very helpful. I liked the relaxed, sort of "no expectations" atmosphere of the class (although you must get frustrated sometimes, sorry). It was nice that you were all for having us learn and be happy. I liked the substitute professor's style of teaching a lot. It really started from the bottom (the very basics) before going up (the resulting relationships we use to solve problems). I felt like this was the teaching style in the beginning, but things slowly became faster and the basics were usually skipped over as the semester went on. Is there a way to have lessons so that the basics are always reviewed/stressed without slowing down the schedule?
