24. Other comments:
Norm has great subject knowledge and he is incredibly approachable. He shows concern for all students and clearly wants us all to do well. I really like that he uses personal nursing experiences in lecture to demonstrate the use of certain drugs.
Norm is a really nice person and is so intelligent in his field, but I think that he is too smart to be teaching an introductory course. I feel like I do not have a good foundation in Pharmacology because many of the drugs and topics were thrown at us without any detailed explanations and sometimes without a lecture on it. When there were no outlines or powerpoints, I felt that he often went off topic and it was unclear to me whether the topic of discussion was important to know or not. Although I am passing the class, I do not think my grade reflects my true understanding in the topic. I wish our classroom had a white board or something a bit more interactive than just a TV screen.
Norm was very knowledgeable about the subject matter, however many of the lectures were not organized in a way that promoted the best learning for novice pharmacology students. We did not cover many of the most frequently used drugs enough in class, in particular antibiotics, antifungals, and psych meds. It is impossible to cover every medication available for any particular system but I feel that by covering the most common medications and describing their use and function in a very basic manner would have resulted in a better overall understanding by the entire class.
I liked the outlines provided before the lecture because it also helped focus my reading and studying.
I expect lectures to be opportunities to solidify our readings and offer opportunities to provide clarification on things we do not understand. I felt that lectures were instead very experience-based (based upon our professor's tele experience) and sometimes beyond our understanding; in this sense they seemed impertinent/'over our heads'. We are beginning nursing students who needed to develop a strong foundation in pharmacology. We needed a professor who understood this and walked us through from fundamentals to more complex concepts.
I like having lectures. When he lectures it is a great class.
I enjoyed being in Norm's class.
This doesn't have to do with Norm but having a whiteboard for him to use would have been extremely helpful in this course.
One of the biggest hinderances to this class was the classroom itself. The class was not very conducive to learning due to it not having a whiteboard. I think a whiteboard would give the ability to plan things out or draw them out accordingly to help explain subject matter further.
Although the semester started off a little rough for me personally- because I had absolutely no background in pharmacology and wished to have more straight forward, simplified presentations of the drugs before being presented with NCLEX questions, by the end of the semester, I felt like the weekly lessons were very helpful (i.e GREAT!). Personally, I have a hard time learning solely from textbook reading. I am a very visual, auditory learner so I really loved Norm's classes that consisted of outlines, and supplemental slides. Norm is SO KNOWLEDGEABLE in this subject and is a wonderful presenter of material. So, when an outline and a few slides were provided, the classes were awesome! It was just the few times we only went over NCLEX questions that I felt lost because at that point, I really just wanted to learn the drugs- to have someone explain them, break them down, give real-life examples of when to use them. I wasn't too worried about the NCLEX at that point because we still had a lot of time to study and prepare for it and before we can learn how NCLEX questions work, we first have to learn the material/content that will be on the NCLEX. Overall, I really liked Norm as a professor and as a clinical instructor! He's great to learn from and just to talk to! And, when he did that in class- talked us through the drugs- I grew so much! Thanks Norm! As far as facilities go, I think the building administration needs to provide Norm and his students with a classroom which contains a whiteboard- so that they can use it to map out concepts, etc. Norm did a great job of using the resources he had in the classroom to teach the students! Thanks!
I think Norm is a very smart person, but the material could have been delivered more effectively in an organized manner. With more time, I believe he will be able to teach the class in a more structured fashion.
I was very disappointed with the quality of instruction for this course. The lectures were disorganized and ill-prepared or non-existent. Class was cancelled several times at the last minute and the professor consistently arrived late or ended early. Although the professor seemed knowledgeable about the subject area he was unable to communicate his knowledge or teach the material to the students. The tests did not reflect the material given in class or truly assess whether the students had learned the material. I passed the class by reading the book and by memorizing the review questions given the day before an exam. I do not feel that I actively learned any of the material and believe this class was a waste of my time and my money. I will probably have to pay another university to retake this course.
Norm is.a great, caring teacher. He is.the.one.instructor.that.i.believe truly.gives.a.damn..about the.students.
Norm is very knowledgable and helpful but his lectures need structure.
There is no doubt that this professor is very knowledgable about the course content. The only thing is that I didn't feel that the information assisted me in applying the content during my clinical. I pretty much had to read the entire book to get a general understanding of how things work.
Although I have no doubt of the teacher's knowledge, I didn't learn anything in class. All my knowledge was done by reading myself. He did not give a foundation of pharmacology. The teacher was not effective in his teaching style and often went on tangents during class which wasted valuable time.
There were only 3-4 well organized lectures throughout the entire semester. The information was not delivered in a clear and organized manner, and was often not delivered at all. This is a very important course and I do not feel that the level of teaching was sufficient or appropriate for graduate students.
Mr. Reeves is very understanding to the concerns of students. I think he provides the necessary attention to students who have concerns to the subject matter. Mr. Reeves is patient and very thorough in explaining concepts on a one-to-one basis. He is compassionate and caring towards his students. I would strongly recommend him to other fellow nursing students.
We seemed to skip over the intro into pharmacology and I never got a grasp of the basics. There were many classes that we did not go over any material. The days that there were outlines were much better but there were only a few of those days throughout the semester. I do not feel as though I have an adequate grasp on pathophysiology. There was little organization to the course.
Outlines/lecture notes were not provided until towards the end of the semester. It would have been nice to have these from the beginning since lectures were often disorganized and difficult to follow.

20. How can the laboratory be improved?
I think the biggest area of improvement is communication with the nurses at the facility. It is very difficult to figure out and work with the RNs at the site. Maybe having the professor be the ice breaker would help.
There was a fairly large gap between the techniques and skills performed between the lab and the clinical site. Moving forward, I would like that gap to smaller and feel that what I am being taught in the lab is preparing me for real like situations.
21. Other comments:
I really liked how Norm took the time to go through diagnostic lab results and the pathophysiology of disease with me. This really help me to apply and remember concepts in these areas. Norm clearly has excellent subject knowledge and I felt confident that whenever I had a question or problem he would help me to solve it.
Might be beneficial to have smaller clinical groups. Often difficult to access Norm for questions/assistance with procedures as he is often occupied with assisting other students. Also, would have been nice to have some type of orientation to the unit and staff in order to improve communication. It took several weeks before it was clear to us students what our role is on the unit and what is expected of us.
None at this time.
