Working in a group helps me develop collaborative skills.

Group project

Field work or involvement with the larger community provided me with a great appreciation and understanding of the course's elements. The reading materials were pertinent and reflective of the process and strategies highlighted in the course description.

The group project with the community is very valuable for me. It is a first hand experience of what collaboration is all about, within the group/team itself made up of fellow students and with the community.

Sometimes I have difficulty understanding the instruction from the professor. She constantly changes her mind.

a class based project with Hauula Community is a great opportunity to implement theories about effective collaboration, but the time and communication limitation impeded me to really implement the theories. Most of us seems that they did not put great efforts in running this project. In this part, i feel that this project did not allow me to make a good progress in sharping my collaboration skills.

While guest speakers are valuable, I felt that the message became somewhat repetitive and no one speaker had innovative ideas to bring to the field/topic of collaboration.

The beginning part felt redundant. It would have been helpful if we could have done more reflective exercises earlier in the course

lessons that i got from this class is very valuable. Dolores always bring experienced guest speakers to our class and it riches my knowledge about collaboration and working with community. Dolores also makes good power point about the topic. Probably she has already been prepared, but, sometimes I feel that Dolores is not well prepared in delivering the power point. So, I cannot give some suggestion about it. If she speak more clearly and leads student discussion about the reading resources in the class, her class will be perfect.

I would have liked to have had the class encouraged to engage in more discourse about the readings, theories, and concepts of collaboration and perhaps less guest speakers.

Having rubrics for the papers would help students understand grading expectations better.

Dolores' professional experience in collaborating was showcased very well. The reading requirements provided a cache of information that is necessary an applicable in practical working situations. Reading and digesting these methods allowed me to identify the techniques that I had used or omitted in my previous profession; allowing me to better prepare for future endeavors that will require a collaborative spirit. Dolores was very flexible with her lesson plan. Permitting a deviation from the standard set in the beginning of the the course, the class was provided with an opportunity to choose the topic/project of their desire. I think that this provided a better and more heightened sense of commitment and involvement toward the final project

Sometimes we get confused of her assignment instruction, so, it will be great if she can provide clear instruction in the beginning of semester so we would be better prepared on doing the all assignments.

It was obvious that Dr. Foley had a lot of experience in the subject that was taught. I would have liked to hear more about her experiences. I thought the way that she set up the projects were great and that the reflections were very useful in helping me to examine how I collaborate and what I have learned about collaborating.

Some of the readings felt redundant, more diversity in thought on the subject matter if possible would be nice.

10. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?

do a better job of engaging students in discussion

Sometimes it felt like to broad of an overview of topics. We covered a great deal of information but nothing in depth and for some of I felt that some of the most important conversations, such as mobilizing the community/empowerment, evaluation and social indicators were glossed over.

would have like to have learned more about community planning, instead of spending so much time on what was a pretty superficial look at some current social policy issues.

I found the readings for this course to be very helpful. I thought there could have been more of them.

I would say the main thing is to have more detailed lectures about the individual topics. Plus, while I enjoyed the video, some of them were too long and could have been shortened and still got their point across. I think the Waianae field trip was a good hands on exercise for us students.

It was a great class. I also like the field trip to talk with homeless people.

11. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?

She seems to be very knowledgeable about the material and the community.

As a Non-Planning major I found all aspects of the course enlightening and extremely valuable. I intend on utilizing many of the concepts learned in class throughout my career in business. I looked forward to every class session, and made sure never to miss a class. Dr. Foley is extremely skilled at conveying the key points behind an idea with both depth and clarity. I appreciated her teaching style and wished that more professors excelled at this skill. The use of guest speakers were also valuable in learning the subject matter and helped to cement and expand my knowledge on their issues.

I think her enthusiasm toward the course was valuable as well as the connections she has made to get us highly qualified guest speakers.

She has views from the people in need.

12. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?

speak more loudly and clearly and with more fervor to engage students more

Sometimes she was not very articulate or clear. for the first assignment I wished that she had been more clear and talked about expectations more in class.

The least valuable part of the class was having us students present the material because that was too unorganized and boring for most of us that we didn't learn anything from it.

field trip

I really enjoyed the field trip to Waianae and the class projects.

The best aspect of this course is the instructor gave comprehensive perspective of social issue through group project, movie, guest speaker and field study.

20. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

we did a lot of readings and rarely ever discussed them or their relevance

I wish that we discussed the readings more in class. The readings were sometimes stale and since we didnt discuss them in class it felt fruitless to read them. I like getting the professors perspective on the readings and I felt that this was lacking.

Log news wasn't enough to understand social issue.

the news logs. THese sometimes felt very juvenile. "One interesting thing I read in this article...." felt like I was writing "One fun thing I did on my summer vacation..." I would have preferred maybe 2 or 3 assignments to write a slightly longer policy brief - this would have taught a new and valuable skill. What makes this a "core course" in community planning? Seems like much more time was spent on looking at various social issues - an education anyone can get from reading the newspaper - and not much time spent on the subject of community planning, and the time that was spent did not explore the subject in much depth.

I think the student presentations were too boring for us to learn off of, plus listening to students I didn't feel like they were purely credible since there was no source citations.

21. What changes would you make in the lectures?

less PowerPoint presentations, more field work and discussion

Discussing the reading assignments

lectures could have been more focused. I think in preparing a lecture, there should be a clear sense of what the student should be taking away from it. What are the main points?

more group discussions

Although the videos were helpful, some of them were a bit long and it was difficult to focus. Perhaps shorter video clips to convey the key points would work better? Overall the lectures were excellent.

I would make them less cluttered so students can more easily relate to them. Using more examples is probably prudent.

Making brief report or evaluation for each group presentation.

discussions were good. There was a nice balance of lecture and discussion time.

I very much enjoyed moderating the class discussions, perhaps in future courses, students could moderate class discussions. It seems that facilitating dialog among groups of people would be a vital skill in planning.

I would start picking on students and having them answer questions because the same people with the same opinions keep talking.
