11. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I really enjoyed the mini field trips that we took during the course of this semester. It is one thing to sit in the classroom and see visual pictures that correlate to the disease, but being able to tangibly take hold of the disease and inspecting the leaves/stems helped myself to gain a better understanding of plant pest diagnosis.
Gained confidence in my ability to diagnose diseases and disorders. Learned how to approach problems I don't fully comprehend: How, when and where to go to look for answers. Every PEPS and TPSS student should take this class, and its companion class, Plant Disease Management.
Being able to determine possible causes of problems I'm having in my garden, and being able to look at a "sick" plant anywhere and come up with possible causes for it.
I learned so much about the things I see almost everyday in just this course. Now I can be more confident in saying what the plant problem is when I see it.
I think it was good to learn nutrient deficiencies as well as pest diseases so that we would be able to distinguish the two as there are several cases where symptoms are synonymous between different disease types.
12. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
The hard-work that was put into preparing our websites! I was preoccupied with other course work (as other students can relate) that made it impossible to feel the need to get started on the project in advance. I spent a whole week, more than 40 hours preparing that website. But I gained so much out of it! Being able to prepare a website, knowing what information to use, being organized and practice time management.
At first blush, it is difficult to understand the meaning of plant disease signs and symptoms you see on a farm or in a landscape. He showed me the way through the woods. A very, very interesting course.
I was able to learn a lot. Not by reading books and studying my butt off, but by listening and comprehending and being able to apply it to everyday life situations.
Your jokes and all the images you showed to supplement our learning.
Looking at different plants and determining (or making an educated guess on) what diseases it could have.

Even though I am a senior this year and was not able to take any of Dr. Nelson's other courses prior to now, I will definitely be taking his course during the spring semester. His methodology of teaching makes students eager to learn, and his relax attitude makes you want to learn more!
Outstanding class. Depth and breadth of material presented in class and within the sylabus was stunning. Dr. Nelson was extraordinarily well organized and obviously cared very deeply about his performance and how well his students were picking up the material. My one suggestion for improvement would be to change his approach to the class session on how to create a Google Sites website. People learn new computer skills by doing it themselves, not by looking over the shoulder of someone as he taps away on a keyboard. Even with extensive notes from that lecture, I was lost, frustrated, and wasted an enormous amount of time fumbling around through the Google Sites instructions and explanatory YouTube videos. I would suggest the additional component to that lecture of requiring each student to come in to class that day with an idea of how they are going to organize their website, what the key categories are going to be, and have them get started IN CLASS creating the framework for their site. Otherwise, GREAT job, Dr. Nelson: I am very, very grateful that I had the opportunity to take this course from you.
Maybe a power point presentation instead of a website
I can't wait to take Pest Management next semester with you
Best course for my first semester here at UH. I enjoyed everything about this course and appreciated the fact that you hate exams and don't create unnecessary stress.
For having taught this course for the first time, I thought Dr. Nelson did a good job at teaching the material and keeping it interesting for someone that was taking the class for general knowledge. Although I do not have an intention in the field of plant disease diagnosis (not specifically) I thought the class gave me a good amount of knowledge. It wasn't as difficult as other 400 level classes, but it was stimulating so that it did not become boring. It offered challenges as well, as creating a website was new to me.
