2. If this course was taken to fulfill course requirements for your concentration/major, how did this course enhance your personal and/or professional development in your concentration/major?
This was an elective course for me, although it fits into my general area of concentration. Anthropology is a much needed topic for all college students and helps develop a greater understanding of the history and culture of humans.
N/A
Helped me learn the origins of many cultures
Unfortunately I was quite bored through out this entire semester. The material was not interesting at all, course structure/syllabus/weekly assignments very unorganized yet very demanding with chats scheduled every week especially considering that this was an online class. If anyone does take this class you'd definitely need to put in two times the amount of work, effort, time needed for any other class.
This course allowed me to learn about how civilizations (some of the first) were brought up, how cities were built, the diverse roles in societies. As cities grew larger, accomodations needed to be done, this course allowed us to learn about how archaeologists learn about the past, how the meaning of their discoveries, and how they came to those conclusion. This course allowed me to take apart the place/city I live in and understand different roles in society and why things are done a certain way.
It gave me a better knowledge of archaeology and Dr. Belcher helped me by further offering books to read outside of class.
Well, they say that we need to know where we came from to understand where we are going. This class also taught me a different way to evaluate a situation.
For my general education.

5. Please comment on the activities or resources that could be added to this course to improve your learning.
The activities and resources were helpful and sufficient. However, during the final weeks when research papers and final exams are upon us, the last remaining weekly discussions seemed to be unnecessary and an imposition on our valuable time.
N/A
Can't think of any
Power points were very overwhelming, you should find some kind of other tool to present lectures. Definitely cut back on the weekly chats, I mean every one is writing the exact same answer a thousand times, I do not see the logic in having a weekly chat. Syllabus really needs to be edited, revised & organized w/ much less detail. (just like the power points)Book was not interesting at all, actually if all we had to do was read the book that would've been great in itself instead of the chats. Essays should not be such a huge amount of your score with exams.
I would say nothing apart from making this an in-class class or going on field trips to be able to see what we are talking about (I'm a visual learner so in my case I like to see what I am learning to understand it better). Professor Belcher did a fabulous job at offering as much as possible through the online course by giving extra readings on certain topics, photographs/pictures of various things (such as maps, or animals, land, objects, murals, etc.) and the chats are very lively, he helps keep the lesson interesting.
None
The chats where really uneffective because it moved so slow and were waiting most of the time for Dr. Belcher to ask a new question or provide more info on a subject only towards the end of the semesters did the chats fullfill their purpose
The only thing I can think of is if they had an interactive excavation site for the computer.
Very interesting class

16. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
I enjoyed this class with particular attention to the chats conducted via Laulima. I appreciate chats that are more of a discussion than a lecture, which were provided by Dr. Belcher in this class. Overall an excellent lecturer with an impressive knowledge of Archaeology.
Auditory lectures might have made the power points more meaningful and interesting.

He does well
Again, everything needs to be changed from weekly chats, power points, syllabus, resources & discussions. I have a class with no weekly chats, no power points, great informational videos, an awesome book, discussions every other work & I LOVE THAT CLASS & I'VE LEARNED MORE INFORMATION THAT WAS INTERESTING, USEFUL & INFORMATIVE!
The only suggestions I could make to improve the course would be to spell check all of the lecture powerpoints because there are some common errors that slightly detract from the lesson. It is a very small issue.
Nothing very good course

I don't have any suggestions.
I think the chat time should be change because 7pm-8:15pm is our dinner time for the most of us. We can make the chat time at like 5pm.
17. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Excellent lecturer and I have recommended his class to other students.
Dr. Belcher seems very knowledgeable about this topic and explains the material in ways undergraduate college students can understand.
This course came recommended by other peers at school. It was an excellent choice and I am glad that I have taken this course.
Very good teacher. Loves the subject he is teaching and has been to many of the sites we learn about so he pretty much knows what he is talking about!
Awesome! TRULY an EXPERT in his field! UHWO is privileged to have him on staff! I am an Accounting major and I took this class to fulfill a requirement. I knew NOTHING about Archeology before this class! I throughly enjoyed his teaching style and willingness to share all his knowledge with us.
CHANGE TEACHING METHODS, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM! THANK YOU!
Dr. Belcher knows what he is talking about. He has a good sense of humor and easily adapts to alterations in class schedule. He gave us advance warning and apologized if class was canceled. He has a great deal of experience in his field and often applied personal experiences to his lessons and chats, even using some of his own publications for class readings. He was friendly and easy to talk to. He provides good feedback on exams to help improve each test.
Dr. Belcher is a very good professor who knows his material very well and is enthousiastic about sharing his experiences with everyone.
Fantastic instructor. His lecture powerpoints were understandable and helped me learn the material. Then the chat's helped to bring home the important ideas.
Dr. Belcher's mandatory chat sessions are a great way for students to learn or rather comprehend better, the course material. He responds quickly to questions via email, and has no problem answering questions during chat sessions, even if they do not pertain to the current subject. Overall, he did a great job.
Very well known professor who is very organize.

20. My overall evaluation of this course is...
This class was amazing! I loved the chats, they really help with understanding the material.
This was a very good introduction to the topic of Archaeology.

Good class to learn the basics on Archaeology
Again - amazing! Being an accounting major, I needed this class to fulfill requirements. I learned SO MUCH this last semester than I ever have in a class outside of my major. The text was very good but the real learning took place within the power points and the chats! I have to admit, I was not too thrilled with the chats concept at first. It was my first chat room! At first I had a hard time keeping up but as long as I was prepared for class, I could participate and understand what everyone else was talking about! Discussion board was also a great tool to evaluate my learning and understanding.
I HONESTLY WISH I NEVER TOOK THIS CLASS & I'VE NEVER FELT THAT WAY ABOUT ANY CLASS IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!
This was my first online course it went surprisingly well I learned plenty of material. I even got to learn a new style of citation so I am very satisfied with this course
Great course but would be better as a face to face class even though Professor Belcher did a great job at making an online class lively and interesting.
Great course that I highly recommend.
A great course.
Very interesting course which gave me a very interesting knowledge about Archaeology.

The only comment I would make would be on the discussion board. Mahalo for not adding a due date. Yes, I procrastinated and did them in the last two weeks of class. Yes, I struggled balancing my other classes and playing catchup but I work better under that kind of pressure so again mahalo and I probably won't do the same mistake and wait.... It was rough at the end. Mahalo!
I APOLOGIZE FOR MY BRUTAL HONESTY BUT EVERY MINUTE OF THIS CLASS WAS EXCRUCIATING! I STRUGGLED SO MUCH TO ENJOY THE MATERIAL BUT DID IT TO MY ABSOLUTE BEST SO THAT I COULD DO WELL ON MY EXAMS WHICH I DID BECAUSE SO MANY OF THE EXAM QUESTIONS WERE STRAIGHT FORWARD & OBVIOUS.

This course allowed me to understand how we as a society started as nomads and have evolved into the people we are today. In my field this is useful, as I am able to sometimes surmise that people behave a certain way because of cultural relationships.
I learned alot about the methods of how anthropologist work and different ways that the world came to look like it does today. I found the class very informative
Personally it enhanced my knowledge of the field of archaeology. I was particularly happy to learn of the first evidence of sedentism, state-societies, crop/food production, craft production, and the evolution of research methods within the field.
Very hands on and practical.
part of upper division requirement, however, I did not find this subject interesting at all.

The way how the "Class Syllabus" written is confusing to me.
More organized syllabus, I struggled to understand the one presented in this class.
During chats to stay on topic or give us a topic for the chat every week very hard when we get side tracked durin the chats.
Way too much information is covered in the course. It seemed to me that Dr. Belcher's expectations of us were way too high for our level.

I would like to see an option for the course on the campus with Dr. Belcher to be able to have face to face interaction with the instructor and other classmates.
17. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
a very nice guy. He is willing to help his students when it permits. I enjoyed taking a course taught by him.
Dr. Belcher is awesome instructor. During our online chat, he explained lectures using his own experience.
Great instructor!
He was great because he had the background experience.
Great. I thought that the information provided was very thorough and without being biased as an archaeologist, he presented the material in a very fair and structured manner. He was very key in chats to discuss major topics/theories related to the lesson and the readings. He also provided extra material that provided examples pertaining to the field of study. Having experience in the field, he was able to provide examples from his own study and had insight into other points of view that exist within archaeology.
that he's very knowledgable in the field of archaeology as he's had first hand experiences.
Loved having Mr. Belcher as my teacher. Chats were very enjoyable and informational!

Great professor with lots of knowledge and experience to share!
Dr. Belcher is knowledgeable and passionate about the subject matter. He is able to interject personal experience into the dialogue with students and encourages open discussions to further the learning process. His teaching methods are above par for an online course. I enjoyed this course. The work load was a good amount and we were given ample time to learn the material. I would recommend his class to others.
Great course!
Great. Provided a great deal of historical information that i didn't know before enrolling in the class. We had a research paper that allowed us the avenue to incorporate what we have learned in the lessons with a research based paper on a chosen subject. That was challenging but I'm glad that it was assigned.
It is A LOT of material but I would have never learned this much if it he were teaching straight out of a textbook. I loved working with real bones and real life situations.

Maybe less chat and more lecture. It's very hard to have a cohesive chate when 5 million people are talking at once. Online chats are a waste of time.

The exams were fairly hard even though I studied. I'm an A student but didn't feel I could get an A in this class because of the exams.
Some lectures were very long and unreasonable

No online Chats, it was such a waste of time and I didn't learn anything from it except that my computer freezes way too much.
There should be field trips! :)
17. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....

Professor Belcher is a very good professor! I would highly recommend him to other people. Beginning to learn a lot about how culture plays a role in early childhood education
taught me to think about how civilizations developed and how it influence the culture today

An alternative option to the chat sessions or chats available two times a week. Sometimes it is difficult to make it to the chats.
Nothing...great course. I really learned a lot.
stay the same
17. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
He is a very nice instructor that communicates well.
Great instructor whose style of teaching makes difficult concepts easy to understand.
Great teacher! I enjoyed the "class lecture" online because we learned a lot of information and had fun doing it! Even though I didn't get to meet my classmates personally, their personalities came out in the online chats.

would recommend this course to others

This course was just a requirement for me to get my degree but in all honesty I felt that this course didn't affect my study on my concentration of Early Childhood Education. Not saying I didnt learn anything, its just didnt help me with anything fro the subject of Early Childhood Education.
I needed an elective to complete my BASS degree, and this was the only Online course that looked remotely interesting

enhanced my understanding of the development of different cultures for the disciple of social sciences
This course enhanced my comprehension in the field of Anthropology by broadening my scope of world civilizations. Looking at the whole history and archeology of civilizations helped me see the important details particular to each culture. Going into a Mythological Studies grad program, this backround will be very helpful. I got alot out of this class.
In a round about way the information applies.
I enjoyed learning the material covered in this course, the instructor is very knowledgeable.
i enjoyed learning about archaeology, its kind of a different perspective of learning about history.
This course enhanced my understanding of archaeology, and the instructor made it very interesting!
I enjoyed learning from the online atmosphere using the powerpoint lectures that Dr. Belcher provided. it was easier to download and review it while not having to be online constantly. Thank you Dr. Belcher.

The instructor missed most of the term due to a trip out of country, but the detailed power point presentations did explicitly present the course material.
I would try to set a more structured chat. Not everyone can easily follow along to questions that are thrown out and especially if the questions do not pertain to the chapter readings for that week. I think that the instructors absence made things a little confusing for some students, and questions were not being answered when needed.
This course was a requriement for my ECE degree. Many of the terminologies that and discussions held was very confusing for me to follow because I felt it was in a different language. Although the information was useful, I would've gained more had it been easier for me to follow the discussion chats better.
Being more available and quicker answers to email
No suggestions
Keep up the great work!
Great teaching style and sticks to the subject at hand. Excellent power points which were of great assistance.
Although I enjoyed the free flowing mandatory chats, I along with a few other classmates prefer to have a structured chat sessions, knowing what we are to talk about or structured questions. I've noticed (myself included) that if I was not talking about what other student were discussing I'd sit on the side line and read the discussion. I felt that although I was present for chat, I did not participate in a manner that I am used to with other classes = discussion questions are already lined out for the upcoming exams or discussion questions already set for the chat sessions. However, it was a interesting learning experience.
my first distance learning experience. I was generally satisfied with the experience.
14. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
William is a very effective instructor as he is well organized and prepared for each class session. As he had to go out of the country for work he prepared us for that and have us weeks notices of him not being here and told us what was going on as well as introducing us to the sub.
He knows his stuff, he makes it interesting and I wished he had been around to answer e-mails.
Instructor is very informative, he really knows his subject and excited to teach.
great course
The teacher proved he was very knowledgable I think that people that are in to archaeology and anthropolgy really liked this course. My field of work is much different so I was not as interested in this topic as much. Overall, I think he was a good instructor.
Good. He was called away at points during our course. That was not favorable to our continuum. Other than that he was a good teacher- he knows his subject, he is active in the field and he is interactive.
Knows his stuff
We actually had 3 instructors this semester but nothing negative actually. They were all quite knowledgeable and followed the course content as laid out. Dr. Belcher returned all my emails and followed through on everything. He actually allowed me to join this class after it had started because the class was initially closed and allowed me to catch up with the rest of the class. Thanks Doc.
he is a great teacher, i felt like he really was thoughtful and helpful to the students. when i asked him questions, he answered it and helped me understand what i needed to know.
Excellent. All information in the course was well covered.
All in all, I believe several students became disconnected from the class due to the bouncy chats and lack of instructor attendance. Don't get me wrong, this instructor is terrific however he was not around long enough for us to really judge him. If he was around more often, I think I could have learned more than having the feeling like I'm being tossed around like a cookie from one instructor to the next. Sorry.
He is a very busy instructor that is moving along the fast lane and is pulled in different directions (not by choice) for his expertise. I find that to be intriguing and very exciting that he is chosen to go on these trips and experience many different sites. He does have compassion for his students and was very apologetic for having another instructor fill in during his absence. Either way, Thanks Dr. Belcher for your expertise and exciting adventures. Please keep safe out there while on your trips and happy hunting - glad you finally got your leach! =)
Seemed very knowledgeable in his field. online discussions were interesting. Class seemed very fair.

17. My overall evaluation of this course is...
Its a very good course that I enjoyed and it was very effective on my learning of the world.
I am glad I took this elective and I am glad I had the time to devote to the power points and text since the instructor was absent.
The course itself was very informational and exciting, but chats were not very organized, and too much confusion with the instructor being absent. A comment was made about this being an online class and that we are all adults and self learners, if so, than why is chat mandatory? Self learners would not have to always consult with others, especially since we had to deal with two people sitting in for our instructor. We paid for a course and to learn. We were expected to stand by the syllabus requirements but when we needed someone (instructor) one was not available until later!
excellent class and instructor
good
Great. I love the topic, chats are a real bother though. Please deal with the technology needed to allow this function to continue without the glitches! We need the interaction.
Interesting and hard
This course is interesting and covers a lot of material. If the student keeps up with the readings and the weekly questions, there shouldn't be a problem with the exams. I enjoyed this class. Mahalo!
This course was organized, well taught and the text was especially good.
Excellent - I would highly recommend the course AND the instructor to other students.
loved the down loadable power points!
I enjoyed this course.
