Everything. She is, in my experience, such a pleasant person to work for...

I liked having the opportunity to work closely with a professor and PhD student, both of whom gave me a feedback and helped to develop my research/writing skills.

I highly recommend any econ student to take a directed research class. It is one of the best things I have done at UH.

6. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?

The guest speakers were very good. The fact that Prof.Konan has very detailed knowledge in this arena was an added bonus and one can see her passion for this subject area in her classes :)

The guest lecturers were great and the outside research helped a lot to understand the concepts. The subject itself is so broad, though, that it's hard to gain a strong understanding in one area.

The opportunity to make the class our own with project selection. It forced us to treat the class as a semester long project, which i found very motivating and helpful.

The group projects really gave us a chance as students to engage in deep discussion with each other in and outside of class about topics that we all considered important environmental issues.

Team based white paper. If you are thinking about going further with your education (grad school) then this class will help you tremendously because she shows you how to construct a concept note and white paper. She is always willing to provide support for anything.

The research paper was the most valuable part throughout the course. Since we are not a professional scientist, we could not really go in depth in understanding the complicated reasons on why and how climate and environmental have changed, understanding the basic is not really challenging. What's more challenging is how we could possibly find solutions to solve the problems through different approaches. By doing the research, we could see the problem in different perspectives, for examples, knowing what's possible and what's unrealistic in the real world.

The semester project based on a topic of our choice. I have never before taken a course which dedicated so much time to one project--it gave me a better understanding of climate change as a whole as well as taught me how to manage my time well and stay organized. Especially appreciated the guest lectures which were chosen specifically for each of our groups' topics!

7. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?

I have cultivated a great interest in this arena as a result of this class and the way it has been designed and as such..i cannot think of an aspect that was not valuable...to me it all was of upmost importance.

It was hard to apply the economic concepts to the climate change. The class was mostly based around the scientific effects of climate change rather than the economic implications. When introduced, it was hard to see the connection of the economic effects in relation to the big picture of climate change. Most of the class was confused about how certain things were related and ended up doing their own research to draw their own conclusions. When writing the paper, it was hard to incorporate everything that was asked of the groups.

I think the only things I would have changed would be to include more in class participation activities.

Presentations. We were all doing research around the similar topics so things tend to overlap a lot with presentations. I think the paper was enough.

one of the best professor

Although I was going through struggles outside of class and couldn't make it a lot of times, Denise Konan was understanding and patient with me throughout the whole semester. I am very appreciative for this.

I felt very comfortable with her and could talk to her about anything.

Dr.Konan is a really nice and knowledgeable professor. I was impressed when she taught us how to write a white paper and how important it is when we have a huge project. I think I'll save her guideline as treasure for my future use! :)

6. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?

Being able to interact and work closely with Professor Konan and my peers. I liked that we had opportunities to learn about a more applicable subject and then brainstorm innovative ways to present our ideas.

I really liked the individual learning aspect that was needed to be successful in the course. Through this process, I feel that I have an even deeper grasp of the subject content. In addition, the chance to work on group projects with other students who are actually serious about economics was a very rewarding experience. I think that a 499 is a necessity for any student who has a genuine interest in their major. I look forward to continuing the research next semester.
