13. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
great curriculum very interesting topics. I really learned a lot and was challenged intellectually. He is a great teacher, just would have liked to hear him lecture a bit more since he is very interesting and knowledgeable. the only thing I felt i didn't really learn from was the student discussions, most people didn't participate and that took away from the discussion.
Professor Gonzalves is one of my favorite professors in the American Studies Department. Even though his classes were on the harder side, he challenged us to think about the themes on a more critical level and I learned so much from his classes.
Theo is awesome, those who won't get him are missing out though i'm sure whoever is teaching is great. his humor is dry he's a hard nut to crack but he really loves these topics and you can tell.
fantastic wealth of knowledge
That he is an effective teacher who pushes students to deliver their best and he accepts nothing else.
He is a great professor. He is very passionate about this topic and forced students to think critically about the material. This was honestly the only class I had that really challenged me to do the readings. Having to write a response every week was difficult but it forced me to read and made it easy to contribute in group discussions. I have never had that type of confidence in any other class.
outstanding professor, very knowledgeable, easy to listen to lectures, organized
Professor Gonzalves is a very thoughtful and thorough instructor. He clarified the materials covered in class. More importantly, he encouraged students to think critically about the subjects taught and how it related to ourselves.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
curriculum and readings
The films
the readings and films. films more.
final paper instead of test.
His lectures are always interesting and well prepared
Learning about the various successful non violent protests among the numerous protests that failed.
I know my favorite video was Iron Jawed Angels. It was a great was to start off the semester and get us thinking about non violent action. I also liked the reading of the play Emma Goldman. This play had underlying non violent action in it as well. I am not big on speaking in front of the class but would if I was called upon. I really did like group discussion. Because I felt I knew the material, it was easier for me to contribute.
interesting videos, interesting to listen to songs relating to issues during the time period
Both the videos and readings were aspects of the course that I found enjoyable besides attending the lectures.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
student discussions where we broke up into groups, most people didn't participate and many hadn't even read the readings
the group work because sometimes only one or two people did the reading
group discussions where it was somewhat intimidating for people to speak.
nothing... it was great

two thumbs up
Effective and informative. Builds strong writing skills.
This was overall a great course that I would take again. One of the best courses I have taken here at UH. There should be a possibility that a course with this material should be available for students who are not AMST majors.
very much recommended
This is a course that I would recomment to any student who is interested in social movements. The contents of the class is inspirational.

that he helped out with somewhat difficult subject matter. In addition keeps me see things in different perspectives.
he's one of THE BEST profs I've ever had. He's thought-provoking, witty, and makes learning very fun and interesting. I think our department & students such as myself were so very fortunate to have him as a professor. I am definitely sorry to see him go but wish him and his wife a wonderful future!

11. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
I think Professor Gonzalves is a excellent teacher and he really knows how to make you want to learn about the materials in class.
Prof. Gonzalves has so much information to disseminate to us about the topic, not only through the readins but he is able to contextualize the historical events, in the historical times, to events in our not so distant past, to current times. The way that he has changed my outlook on the history of the U.S. i snot so Ameerican-centered anymore. Talk about globalizating American history and making history so stimulating and relevant...that is my overall evaluation of him! :o)

Good teacher. Course material is pretty intensive but it works. It's not a ridiculous amount of work although it is challenging. Instructor is effective and engaging.
Excellent.
The professor is very organized which allowed students to always know what the assignment is. His lectures are engaging and entertaining which makes the material stick in our minds. He goes over the reading thoroughly for better understanding. He doesn't tell us the answers right away, he wants the students to engage and answer the question or interpret a chapter, and after that is done, he tells us what the lesson is. It's a great way to teach. Especially a seminar course like this. Great teacher! I can't wait to have him for 382.

i like theo, he has a wit that works. it helps that i like him since i see him for 382 next semester.
He is a good teacher and I enjoyed his class very much
-- snipped --
He is an enthusiastic educator who holds his students to a high standard.
great teacher, I learned a lot of things about American thinking and the background for it historically that were a surprise to me. I feel that I truly see a link between the English sailors, Early settlers and others in the 1700's and their way of thinking to the way we think today. The course made the relationship between the two visible and understandable.
I thought Professor Gonzalves was really into this class throughout the entire semester and I learned a lot in his class. He always had good lectures that were impossible to get bored in. Doing the assignments was a little hard, but made you understand the material fully. All in all I think Professor G. did a great job as a teacher and I look forward to taking another one of his classes next semester.
that he's one of the best professors that I've ever had the opportunity to learn from at UH Manoa. He does not waste our time at all and I really appreciate that in a professor. The workload was definitely not easy, but it wasn't impossibly hard either. I learned a lot and he challenged me to become a better student than I was at the start of the semester. He set high expectations for the class but he's not a jerk to those students who obviously aren't trying to meet them (it's obvious they didn't attempt to analyze the readings or read them for that matter). He makes attending class a worthwhile and enjoyable experience, which is not something that very many professors on campus do.

the exams. It seemed like he was trying to trick us
not writing intensive, we wrote 20 2 page papers, can't we get a w status for that
Writing an essay for every class period.
The assignments were tough, but after a while I got used to them so it wasn't too bad.
The writing assignments. Sometimes it took an unnecessarily long time to complete the assignment because one was unable to find a song, video clip or advertisement to analyze a passage with.

15. My overall evaluation of this course is...
I think the class should be counted as a writing intensive class because I have more writing in this class than a class I'm actually taking that counts as a writing intensive course.
I learned a ton about American history. Even though the course books were thin (thank you for that one Prof!) They were packed with info. I wish I had read Jordan earlier in my college career, I might have not been so bored with American History.
it expanded my knowledge about slavery and its historical and cultural roots/origins.
A solid course for American Studies majors and minors.

gotta take it.
I really enjoyed this class and I learned a lot from the class
okay class
A good course to get students prepared for thesis work and generating pages of material on limited sources.
good course, very informative, really improved my analysis and writing skills by the two papers every week!
Great class, you learn a lot and Professor G. really gets you to be involved and get a good understanding for the material.
it's a really great course that one can learn a lot from if one puts in the work. I can see why it's a required course for American Studies students.

11. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
He is a very thought-provoking and stimulating instructor. His choice of texts as counter-narratives to traditional notions of American history was brilliant and has inspired me to emulate his teaching methodology and syllabus. I am glad that he's teaching this required class because I learned such a breadth of information and he not only provided us with historical discourse, he made us contemplate its contemporary impacts as well. Thank you, Theo!
Professor Gonzalves is truly an honor to work with. His approach to teaching is incredibly progressive and he allows for discussion to happen but also knows when to insert an idea or theory to help the students see another perspective or to take the conversation one step further. His grasp on any subject is immense and it seemed that there were no topics on which Professor Gonzalves couldn't talk about. His wealth of knowledge and experience makes him very credible and trustworthy as a professor but he does not push his knowledge onto students; instead he allows it to help foster critical thinking in order for us to arrive independently at an idea. He is approachable and you can sense that his character is very sincere inside the classroom and that he truly devotes his mind and time to educating students.
Theo challenged me to think critically about the material. He also encouraged me to explore the material thoroughly through my written work and in the classroom discussions.
Dr. Gonzalves is knowledgeable, humorous, and dedicated. There were rarely dull moments in this class, and he rates favorably on my "Would I like to have a beer with this person?" scale. He is interesting and engaging, though I must admit his intelligence intimidated me a bit at the start of the class. Overall, he is a fine educator.
Excellent professor! I have a new way of understanding history thanks to him. My life has certainly been enriched through this course. He promotes critical thinking.
Great teacher with his own philosophy and knowledge. He is also entertaining and sometimes make students lough.
Excellent! Theo is exceptionally knowledgeable of the field (and beyond) and the materials presented in the course, and his feedback on the writing assignments was prompt, concise, and always encouraging.
To sum it up in a few sentences Theo. Gonzalves is the toughest professor I've taken a course from in my life. This is a good thing and made me a better student. The course was a weekly bombardment of intense reading and writing with extremely stiff deadlines which pushed me to a place I've never been before. I learned a lot though and taking a course from Gonzalves deepened my knowledge.
He is a good teacher! I like his questions because it encourages us to think further.
Dr. Gonzalves is an incredible resource. He has extensive knowledge on a variety of historical and contemporary social movements and issues. Dr. Gonzalves is thoughtful and always encourages students to think even more critically. In short, Dr. Gonzalves is brilliant but not heavy handed.
Theo presented me with an entirely new and refreshing way of looking at history. The counter-narrative texts he chose for the course inspired me to re-examine my own perspectives on how history is and should be written leaving me with many ideas for my own future research. This focus on historiography was the most important aspect of the course for me and will be the thing that I believe will be most valuable to me in the long run.

13. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The textbook choices and the class discussion. I appreciated seeing how my fellow students "taught" about a particular text in their presentations, as it exposed me to different teaching styles and methodology that I may utilize once I become a teacher/professor.
I enjoyed a majority of the books that were assigned, especially American Holocaust, White Man's Burden, How Early America Sounded and Thomas Jefferson & Sally Hemmings. The presentations were effective in getting very familiar with a particular text and the mandatory short writing responses were helpful in retaining key points from the readings. The final syllabus assignment was one of the best ideas for a final for grad students and I appreciated the very practical and useful exercise of putting together a syllabus. I feel this should be a mandatory assignment in one of the 600 level classes because it challenges one's thinking of how to produce knowledge.
I liked it best when the Theo led the discussions. He is thoughtful and inspiring.
I enjoyed the course materials, for the most part. Our texts were very interesting and well-chosen.
The selection of texts was superb. I also valued Dr. Gonzalves's thoughts on the subject material.
The selection of textbooks. Presentation by students, which made the class with different looks and methods every time.
I particularly appreciated the opportunity of constructing a course syllabus and narrative, and the peer and professorial review that was included in the process.
On the opening day T. Gonzalves is extremely tough, the challenge he presented (course ) can make a student stay or walk away. The books have one too many pages and writing is due within four days. This is " academic suffering " at it's finest and good to fine tune a student. Theo made me a better student.
class discussion, and writing response papers would be helpful for us too.
I liked that weekly response papers were required because it ensured that everyone read the text and had something to say. I enjoyed working on our final. Creating a syllabus is a lot of work and very good practice for grad students who may end up teaching.
Unlike other grad classes I've taken in the past, I enjoyed every reading assignment in this class.
14. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
I wish we had more weeks, believe it or not. I didn't want this class to end. The discussions in class were very fascinating and Theo facilitated it very well.
Though in the end I saw the usefulness of these texts the ones I liked the least were the Economic Interpretation of the Constitution and Red, White and Black. Also the Many Headed Hydra was a very useful and engaging text however it was a little overwhelming to read the entire book in just a week. Maybe it would be more effective if this particular text was broken up into 2 weeks just so you could really have time to devote to the chapters and understand the larger concepts and links.
Sometimes the student presentations went too long and overlapped with the professor's material. Students were often creative, but if the presentations went on too long the Theo's time was eaten up. This was a loss for all of us.
Three words: Friday night papers. With my full-time job, it was always a challenge to find time throughout the week to read the book and write a paper before the weekend. Grueling.
I always felt intimidated by my classmates.
That I did not get his feedback on papers I submitted. This really let me down. It was like I was writing the paper without guidance. I wanted to know what was wrong, if there was something wrong about the paper, so I would be able to improve the next time I would work on another paper.
N/A
Every week I had to visit the dictionary. Some of the jargon in lecture really " knocked me out of the water ". But then again, that is my problem. I got to learn many new words even at this time in life.
While I enjoyed the final syllabus project I was a bit disappointed with the student that gave me peer-reviewed feedback. Not all students are equally conceptual or critical so the feedback I got was almost useless. Perhaps we could have circulated our syllabi to two students to increase our odds of getting constructive feedback. I must note, Dr. Gonzalves did give us feedback on this assignment which makes up for the lack of peer feedback any of us might have experience.
15. My overall evaluation of this course is...
A+ for sure!
I would say that this class was the most effectively taught 600 level course out of the three. Professor Gonzalves' approach made this core course an invaluable experience.
Excellent course that I would recommend.
It was far more enjoyable and enlightening than I expected a required course to be.
Essential for my understanding of early American history.
Great class. I just needed feedback on my papers!
Excellent--from the selection of readings, weekly written response paper assignments, student presentations, to the final project. Theo is an excellent professor, mentor, and I truly enjoyed the course and the challenges it, and Theo, presented!
Something that had to be done. T. Gonzalves is a good professor. Tough course but I feel I'm coming out better.
very satisfying for me.
AMST 601 is tremendously useful and should continue to be required. Dr. Gonzalves should continue to teach this course given his background as a historian but also his ability to make history interesting and relevant. He chose several terrific texts that offered revisionist histories that are necessary for a critical understanding of American culture.
16. Other comments:
Would love to take more courses from Theo.
I enjoyed the class overall. The readings assigned for the course was interesting and the assignment was challenging. Even though it is a requisite course I would recommend this to others.
None.
I am very curious to know what texts Dr. Gonzalves would choose if he were to teach AMST 602. I love the way he crafted "the beginnings" to "civil-war" and can only imagine what he would do from the "civil-war" to "present" especially with his interest in performance and cultural formation. Looking forward to his class next semester!

12. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
enjoyed the lectures, good speaker, brings up interesting points, good sense of humor, reasonable
He is an exceptional instructor.
Theo was a really great teacher. He knew a ton about the subject and really encouraged us to think outside the box. He was really good at giving up constructive criticism and getting the entire class to participate in discussions.
He is very thought-provoking and charismatic.
He is very good. He reminds me of my favorite high school teacher. So I found this course worthwhile.
Professor Gonzalves is a great teacher that makes a writing intensive course challenging and enjoyable at the same time.
a letter grade: A. Professor Gonzalves is enthusiastic and knows how to work a class room. AMST 202 was one of my favorite classes this semester because of the passion and student involvement he injected into the class.

14. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
good overall in going from a to z, interesting course materials - readings, documentary films, professors class discussions, extra credit available
I enjoyed listening to TSG speak. He is a fantastic human being.
I really enjoyed the group discussions and what others had to say about the subject/assignments. I also liked the various movies, music, and articles Theo had for us.
We can talk about basically anything in our responses. That helped me to analyze aspects of history that interest ME and not just textbook stuff.
It was very engaging and it made you really think about what you were reading beyond the classroom. It definitely was a writing intensive class.
I liked class discussions the best.
The readings were always interesting and the class discussions allowed us to get different perspectives on topics.
Being in class was probably the best. In nearly every discussion we were all able to contribute and class was never boring.
15. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
I loved this class.
I didn't like the fact that we have to turn in our papers the night before class.
-- snipped --
I didn't like having to read so much and the final paper was difficult.
Nothing. Professor Gonzalves always made it easy to go to class.
The weekly response papers became a pain later in the semester when other classes started to increase the workload.

16. My overall evaluation of this course is...
really enjoyed it. would recommend it to a friend.
The most interesting time in my life was spent in this class.
This course was great and I would highly recommend it to anyone.
I liked it alot. It was fun while it lasted.
It is a great course, and the instructor was great. I would definitely recommend it to others looking to truly learn while get that written intensive taken care of.
Anyone interested in music history should take this course with this professor.
I recommend this class to anyone who wants to improve their writing skills. This class was fun and gave me the tools I need to deliver a good paper for every other class I take. This class broadened my reading base through the required readings. I enjoyed this class a lot and am walking away with more than I expected.
Great! I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in American History or Music.

12. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
I enjoyed the powerpoint presentations the Instructor used in class to relate historical events and themes we were studying to contemporary times. The instructor is interested in the material and very knowledgeable in many other areas of study that he also applied to the lectures.
Prof Gonzalves is a great instructor. He personally inspires me because he's so knowledgeable and also because he pushes me to want to do well. After a semester in his course, I genuinely WANT to learn more outside and inside of school because I would like to build on the skills that could make me as rhetorically and intellectually efficient as Gonzalves. Also, even though he has a sarcastic/hard demeanor, when I needed help with references/paper extensions, he was very approachable and friendly. I really appreciated him as an instructor.
I liked Prof. Gonzalvez. First impression made me nervous about the class but as time went on I ended up liking everything about it. I think the first impression was crucial because it made me do the work and stay focus. Prof. Gonzalvez knows his stuff and the class time really helped with specifics.
knowledgeable and thought provoking. Refreshing!
I think the instructor is knows about the subject matter and enjoys teaching others. His exams are difficult because of the vagueness of the multiple choice questions. Also for the final, even though he asked the class if there were any questions regarding the study guide, and questions were asked, he was still vague about answering them. He communicates well, responds to e-mails quickly, and lets you know what you need to do to do well in the course.
Great
This class was intimidating at first, but once I got into it, it quickly became one of my favorite classes. The readings were very interesting. Things I thought I knew about our nations past turn out to be the opposite. They're all facts that we want to forget about, but if we did, we would make the same mistakes as our founding fathers.
Excellent. He examined course material and made it simple to understand.

Prof. Gonzalves is a great instructor. I would take another course from him.

14. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I enjoyed the reading materials, particularly Winthrop Jordan's White Over Black. The segment relating to music was most enlightening.
The creative aspects we had to do in the essays, it allowed me to think outside the box.
I liked the lectures the best actually. The information was always stimulating and the way Gonzalves relays the information made me laugh to myself half the time because of the jokes he makes/accents he speaks in.
The whole set up was RAD. I loved comparing the book and my understanding of the material to music and films that I like. I was encouraged to do a good job because it gave me freedom for any comparison as long as you know your stuff. I probably learned the most in this class than any other in my college career.
Jordan's Black Over White, the size was intimidating at first, but it was one of the best reads I've had in my classes
I enjoyed the weekly assignments, because your participation depends on them, rather than speaking up in class. Also, the assignments are very creative and allows you to speak your mind about the readers/course information in a stimulating way.
Finishing the gigantic course book.
The class discussions helped to explain the readings in more depth. Every chapter that we had to read taught me something new, and that was the most exciting part about it.
The responses were reasonable and Dr. Gonzalves made the class interesting by incorporating current event topics in order to relate to history.
Synthesizing readings with other media. Challenging but fulfilling.
I liked the course reading material.
15. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

The deadline of the essays because some of us may have jobs on the night of the deadline and it doesn't give us enough time to send it in on time.
I guess when we had to double up on assignments and do 4 a week instead of 2. That drove me crazy but after it was done, i felt like i accomplished something for making myself finish on time.
We are writing more in this class rather than my other Writing Intensive. This class should give the student credit for the amount of writing he/she does.

I really enjoyed this class, the readings and the perspectives the instructor offered in addition to the materials.
I enjoyed it.
2 thumbs up
SIC DUDE. My overall evaluation of this course is it is a great class. I probably learned the most I ever have about American History while dancing with contemporary times by comparing it to music and film. I wish Prof. Gonzalvez played the song or video clip that he liked the best from each reading in the following class to encourage good work. If this class was a WI, I would recommend it to everyone!
Fabulous. I learned new and valuable information.
The subject matter was interesting and I learned a lot. The assignments are do-able as long as you keep up with the readings. There is a lot of writing/reading, but like I said before, it is do-able. My only concern and issue with the course was the exams.
good. I learned a lot about colonial and revolutionary America, as well as how history shapes contemporary race relations.
Even though i was scared out of my mind in the beginning of the semester, i ended up loving this class. It required us to look at the history (that no one really wants to remember) and think about it in modern times. It was difficult, but fun at the same time.
Awesome. I would definitely recommend this class to another student.
'Twas interesting and challenging. I did not enjoy it compared to other courses though.
The course was great. I learned a lot about the time period we covered.
