13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Patient, and if she helps you with anything you need
Mrs. Scanlan's major strength is her sincere desire for her students to learn and succeed. She is genuine and helpful, which contributes to a positive learning environment. Mrs. Scanlan uses multiple learning tools to develop individual skills.
Her major strengths as a teacher are that she is able to clearly present the materials. However we sometimes catch some mistakes in the lesson but it is often corrected right away and so we learn from those mistakes possibly making the lesson a little bit more effective than it was before.
Mrs. Scanlan's major strengths as a teacher was that she cared about her students. Whenever I needed help in class she would always be willing to give up time to help. She always cared about all of us to pass the course. She tried her best to make sure we got all the help we needed in order to pass.
Speaks clearly and it's easy to understand what she's saying and she gives good concepts.
Very enthusiastic teacher, always willing to help and explain.
Scanlan showed that she was willing to try various teaching strategies to get through to students.
Able to communicate well and explain
i think Mrs. Scanlan's strengths was her patience with her students, her ability to teach and her knowledge of the subject.
great energy and always possitive
Definitely knows how to work with students well. Understands that math is a difficult subject and loved the group activities. Learning math visually was incredibly helpful.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Do not put that many online quizes
I think that the portfolio requirement is a massive waste of time and effort.
Make class longer than 50 mins.
I would have liked more group work.
Open all assignments for the whole year
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
making appointment outside of class
Scanlan shows concern by providing assistance when requested. She makes herself available to students when they show signs of trouble and is generally very easy to get in contact with outside of classroom hours. She also identifies weakness's and offers help and solutions.
She showed concerned for her students by making sure we always did our homework and test on time. There is never a day in class where she doesn't forget to remind us that we had an assignment due the next class. She also makes sure that we all understand what is going on in the class. If we don't she shows us many examples on the white board until we get it.
Showed step by step process on how to solve problems.
Scanlan went over and above giving chances to students. She made several attempts to communicate with students about their progress. Repeated reminders were made about the math tutoring centers/ programs at KCC. She was persistent in making herself available outside of the designated class time.
Reminding students of their grades, try to encourage students and give opportunities to turn in work late
She showed concern by always updating our grades on laulima, arranging meetings with us whenever we needed help and giving us opportunities to better ourselves.
Was lenient on due dates for hw and tests. Always adjusted the due date if a student was not able to complete it by the given time. And offered a lot of help outside of class.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
yes, because she is very sweet, and she wil help you every time you don't understand something
Absolutley.
I would because she is able to present the material well and is an effective teacher, not only that but she does bring us food once in a while, which is a good thing to me. Reminds me of my high school math teacher because they did the same thing as her.
Yes I would recommend LaVache to students because although her class is short, we get a lot of work done in 50 minutes. Also because she takes the time to help a student whenever we need help. And if you have any questions she is willing to answer them.
Yes because easy to approach teacher.
I would recommend Scanlan because she is genuine and shows concern for the learning of her students.
Yes because she has a good system and the class is fun and you learn a lot
I would recommend mrs. Scanlan to other students because she is a good teacher and a genuinely nice person.
yes, she is very accecable and able to help outside of class.
Yes. She was an excellent math teacher and I did better than I expected. She understood her students individual learning needs and adjusted to each of them.
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
It would be nice if there were more teachers like her.
She is a very nice teacher. She helped me a lot during the course. Whenever I needed help, she was always there to help. There was never a day in class where I was so confused that I had a hard time learning. Mrs. LaVache teaches in a way that is understandable to me. I enjoyed her and her course. By far the best and most interactive math professor I had at KCC.
Great teacher.
Scanlan consistently brought a positive and polite attitude to each class.
This is probably the best math class i had so far

19. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
All.
The group work because allowed peolple to work together and solve problems for right answer.
What I found most useful was utilizing the hardcopy textbook in tandem with online homework assignments and quizzes. I was also very fortunate to have an academically aggressive classmate/ partner to work with.
All were valuable
Group work. The fun ways of hands on learning for math. Visual explanations.
20. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I think the portfolio was unnecessary, the online posts were unnecessary, and the fact all homework and quizzes were submitted online was cumbersome.
None.
In class lectures were conducted very quickly making the material hard to learn in class. Studying outside of class was crucial to keeping up with the curriculum.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
She genuinely cares about her students, their well being and comprehension of the material being taught; this I feel is what separates Scanlan from being a good teacher to an exceptional teacher. She also is adept in the subject of mathematics, is clear in communication, works hands on with students often taking extra time to make sure everyone understands from many angles, she also encourages group work in this math class. This is different for me, I have never been in a math class where we worked in groups, math for me was always a single person subject, but I found it to be very useful and rewarding. I helped a couple of my class makes work through some problems they were stumped on, and we found that once they did the factoring, they understood the rest and they liked working through them, the factoring was just stumping them. Helping others see that it's not so hard was a good feeling.
Excellent and dedicated to her students learning.
hands down, she really cares about her students succeeding
shes nice I guess and helpful, well not for me she didn't explain it well when she went to overlook peoples in class activity as we were doing it.
She was sweet and always lively in class. she was always concerned about if we understood how to do a problem/formula correctly and i respect her as a teacher.
she has good communication skills & techniques that helps students have a better understanding of the problems.
Shes so great! I loved her as a teacher. I wish I could have her every year. Shes very nice and very sweet. She shows so much appreciation for her students and really wants to see them succeed.
knowledgeable with her material, patient, and encourages students to ask questions about anything.
She makes the students feel positive rather than negative when we enter the class.
Teaching math! Not many math teachers are good at explaining things.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
Changes to LaVache?....Nope. She's Great.
None
make ms. scanlon teach math 103 fall 2011
I say, to be more on time or keeping on scedule.
Maybe go in a slower pace? i understand that we didnt have enough class time, which may have been a reason for rushing, but overall i think as a whole it was a wonderful Math class.

class got off track on the schedule, would appreciate it if you could take time to readjust the schedule and let students know so we can know what to expect before each class. Some important handouts are not on laulima.
None at all. Keep up the good work! :D
nothing.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
In almost everything LaVache did reflected her true concern for students well being, whether it was being available in her office, via email, spending extra time on areas of difficulty, setting up extra outside of class time for those who need extra help, so we can all do good on our final exam, everything that LaVache does reflects her care for students. Even assigning students to create a portfolio to correct mistakes is a genuine care for the students to understand where their mistake was so that they can keep on improving to their best ability.
Made time for extra study sessions and passed out work sheets to help us learn.
she tells and show us
I'm not sure.
Everyday she would partner us up to form groups since its better to work together with math problems. she always told us she was free if we wanted to talk to her one-on-one.
she helps students individually & sacrifice her own time to help students out with any problems.
She definitely makes a student feel special. She shows so much concern for her students. I really implore her for that. She shows a lot of heart.
Have us give her feedback on our work though laulima.
She's really helpful when it comes down to passing the course. She'll try hard to get you up to the same pace as everyone else.
email and offers study groups outside of class to prep
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?
Yes. Definitely. She is one of the best teacher's I have ever had, and it's not just because I love mathematics. Her teaching is clear, concise, on point, her involvement with students is there whenever you need it, and encourages always working your best, and she has a great personality. I would love to know if she teacher higher mathematics like trigonometry or calculus, I would take her.
Yes, because she makes Math fun and easy to talk to.
yes!!!
I would recommend this class its fiarly easy especially if you have AWESOME group members than of course yes. Also if you took 24 this is pretty easy to understand. Also if you can learn things on your own I say take this class.
Absolutely! Being in her class made me enjoy Math again! ill admit i was never the smartest person in math, but she made me understand it a bit better, and i know she could make anyone enjoy math as well.
yes, because she can adjust to any students & help them on their level.
Yes, 100%. She is the best!
Yes because she was always helpful and tried to make math not so difficult.
Yes I would because she's a fun positive teacher and the fact that she also teaches the subject carefully and clearly for students to understand.
DEFINITELY!!
17. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
She helped me register for my Math140 for the fall and I am greatly appreciative, I feel like I can approach her about anything, I and fond of her as a person, I admire and respect her.
Excellent teacher. I would recommend her to anyone.
Pretty good i guess.
Keep doing what you are doing! you are a wonderful teacher, and if i could i would take every math class you are a teacher in!
great teacher.
I love her
Want to thank her for being a creative and caring teacher and ecouraging us to not give up on math.

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
Her patience to work with someone through math troubles. It helps out a bunch, and has saved me several times!
Shes awesome, always there when you need help; not that there were many times because her teaching methods were great, clear and concise.
She makes sure students understand and know the subject well, and if not she would make sure they do by taking her time to explain.
She knew her subject area pretty well. She knew how to control her class.
Her major strengths: she is awesome! she is the best teacher she is really easy to talk to she gives enough time for everyone to work on all assignments.
She knew the subject really well. She presented the lessons very well, and clear. She encourages class participation, she allowed us to make small groups to do activities that would help in our lessons.
Very knowledgeable
She is patient to all forms of students and leaves herself open to questions and feedback.
She has a positive attitude and encouraged students to do their best.
determination to follow through and gather all the information her students require.
Her positive attitude t teaching kept the classes upbeat. She is fun and one of the best math teacher Ihave ever had! She is an assett to KCC.
Great communication and a very knowledgeable professor!
She always make sure that the subject was understood by every one.
She really knows her material and explains it well so that us as students can understand what is going on. She have team activities and switches all the students around so that we can get to know everyone and help each other if we got questions on a problem that were having a hard time on. She also answers all of our questions and if we don't understand it then she will explain it so we can understand it.
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
One weakness I've noticed was not taking action when she has loud students in her class. There were a couple of students in our class that would constantly be disrupting the lecture making it hard for the majority of the class to hear and concentrate on the teacher. Otherwise, Scanlan is a wonderful teacher who knows what she's talking about!

I think everything was great.. So in my opinion no changes are needed. Just cutting out the portfolio thing, that is such a waste of time.. :)
Provide more time outside to tutor her students, and be more flexible with her schedule. To offer her student's more time in class to complete their math portfolio to understand the concepts better. To provide test taking strategies to her student's, and to calm them down, and help them to relax to before a quiz, or test.
nothing... ITS PERFECT!

No I don't think so anything changes.
She is kind, fun, and caring. I don't want her to change.
None, I am very happy with her class.
I could say that less people in the class would make it more easy to reach the achievement in class.
Nothing
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
She would always try her best to get around to students who needed help. She also keeps her office open all day, every weekday for anyone who wants help.
She would take time and explain if we didn't understand, which is great, she is reasonable and understandable.
She would offer to help tutor her students while she had free time during her office hours.
She spoke to every student who had concern over their grades and she is accessible if you need any help.
She talked about how we did in our tests. She gives us a lot of extra credit to help us earn more points.
She lets students see her outside of class
She answered any related questions without taking quality time away from each lesson.
She spoke with Students individually after midterm to update and guide them in the right direction
when I have question,She would patiently explain to you until you understand the problem.
Always being there when we need her.
By holding student conferences, updating us on grades, asking us how were were doing on a daily basis. What more could you ask! Overall a FANTASTIC instructor. Thank you!
She is always on th time, ready to explain as much as possible any exercise.
She had all of her students meet up with her and she clearly states if we need help then we need to make time to go to see her for help. She also answers all of our questions so we can understand whats going on in class.
16. Would you recommend this instructor to students? Why or why not?

13. What are the instructor's major strengths as a teacher?
she gives out very clear instruction
She is very well organized and overall I just like the way she teaches.
She is so friendly so I could ask her more questions. I felt comfortable to ask.
explains things VERY well so that we know exactly what is goin on.
She is easy to talk to and she is easily approachable
Her ability to connect with students on how to solve problems
good talker
Helps the students 1 on 1 and that is a major asset
14. What changes, if any, do you suggest to the instructor?
no need
Have an in class review day before the test
Nothing.
She should collect homework on time so that those who did it dont feel like they did it for nothing.
none
none
Nothing I liked the group work
Needs a teachers aid.
15. How did the instructor show concern for students?
she checks our work all the time
She allows us to correct our mistakes on tests, gives us extra credit opportunities, and extends due dates so people can finish their homework.
She asked us everything twice to make sure we all understand.
She offers study sessions outside of class time and in class, she is always walking around asking us if we understand what we are doing. And if we dont know, she comes over and explains the problems step by step till we understand.
She always wanted to make sure we understood what was going on before she moved onto the next sections.
keeps on telling us to do our homework so we can do better in out testes, and have conferences with us, so we can ask her about what were having trouble with.
talks to them
She helps us 1 on 1 and helps till we understand
Hounded them.
