20. What did you like most about your online course experience?
The chats with Ms. Porter and classmates that gave us the opportunity to "meet" and discuss assignments.
don't have to leave the house to do my work
I liked that I didn't have to sit in a classroom for an hour listening to a teacher talk. I also enjoyed talking to classmates without being face to face it made it easier to help correct their work.
It was easier to fit into my schedule.
it allowed me to complete assignments on my own time.
very convienent if you have other classes on campus
Work at my own pace
I liked how the assignments were giving out ahead of time and I had plenty of time to finish them.
Flexibility.
I didn't have to go into class and could do everything on my own time.
I liked how a was able to take this class while taking other classes on campus. It really eased my schedule.
The ability to choose when and where I did my studies. Having the freedom to take the course and assignments on my schedule. The flexibility is what first drew me to returning to school to finish my degree. I look forward to taking my courses online next semester.
Clear Concise Fair
I enjoyed the different assignments because we were able to relate to the writing subjects, thus being able to write more creative papers. Also, Ms. Porter also responded with grades and answers to our questions and/or concerns in a very timely matter, helping us to correct and learn from our mistakes. This class was my most organized online class with the help of compclass, which also made it very enjoyable.
I liked how the assignments were posted in advance so if we wanted to get ahead in the class we had that option. Also the fact that I can work on my own time since I work full time and go to school full time.
21. Other comments:
I really enjoyed this class. Janet Porter was very encouraging. She gave a lot of opportunities for extra credit, which I really appreciated.
teacher didn't help me out when I needed it, the class was more like here are the assignments learn this on your own. Didn't really need a specific teacher for class b/c I wouldn't get much of a response when I emailed asking questions. Overall I wouldn't want to take another online class unless I had to
n/a
I didnt like any of the writing topics we did. The work from the Remix book is very boring. Everything was so repetitive. It would have been nicer to have more freedom to choose the topic we were writing about.
I would highly recommend this professor as well as this course to anyone willing.
When I asked her for help to understand the grade she gave me she didn't respond to me and then I messaged her again and she said that she got my message she just didn't know what I was asking and so she decided not to write back. My message made since to me, but I rephrased the questions that I asked to help her understand my problem, and again I recieved no response. I gave up on her, because I came to relieze that she is bias and the reason she gave me a low grade is because she disagreed with it(even though I followed the directions). If I had the choice to take her again I would say no, because if I have a question, I prefer a teacher that can give me an answer instead of avoiding me so they don't have to deal with me.

Thank You Ms. Porter!! Loved the class...
Over all I enjoyed working with Mrs. Porter. I enjoyed the assignment that she had planed for us. Her grading system was, I think fair. I hope to take another online class with her. Mahalo Mrs. Porter
Some of the assignments were not listed correctly on our schedule. I think it was from using previous semester material. It should match exactly without a question or revised asap.

18. What did you like most about your online course experience?
Flexibility
What I like most about this online course was the level of commucation between students and instructor. The online peer reviews were very helpful in my opinion. The instructor"s comments were clear and very helpful. Janet Porter was also a very reliable instructor. She posted assignments in a timely manner. She also returned emails and graded assignments quickly as well.
Ms. Porter is a very helpful teacher. She is quick to respond to messages and doesn't make you feel like you should be afraid to ask for help. Wish I could have her for all my ENG courses.
The assignments are spaced out evenly to give you time to think about the assignment and actually doing it before the next assignment is due.
The one thing that i liked about my online course that it was convenient for me.
Janet Porter was always very helpful. It felt like I was in class almost.
Majority of the assignments in a regular English class require you to turn in work online, and with this you are already doing that. Plus the convenience to do you work on your schedule is amazing.
- I didn't have to drive all the way to class. - Usually, I hate asking questions to my teachers. Due to bad past experiences, but over the internet I'm not affraid at all. I'm more comfortable. - I never particpated in the chat sessions as often as I should, but I take night classes as well, at the times the sessions were available. But the last chat meeting was awesome! I actaully talked to other students in my class, as well a my teacher. - I like the organization of the homework. Like, Janet Porter gives us a good amount of time to complete each assignment. - I like how we would write papers, have comments written on them by other students & we can revise them for more points.
The ease of access with the fast responses.
I liked that Professor Kay Porter always had the due dates on the calendar in bold and underlined. This allowed me to always be ahead of the game and get things turned in on time. I also liked all the extra credit that was given, it really helped me.
assignments were graded quickly and communication was efficient to do well in the class
The thing that I like most about my online course experience was that its pretty straight forward and you know what you are expected to do and how to do it.
It was pretty easy for an online class and for our assignments we had a reasonable amount of time to complete.
Though this was my first time in using an English course I found it very easy to follow along. However, this requires a lot of self discipline.
I liked being able to work on the assignments according to my schedule.
I liked the support Prof. Porter has given during the semester. I felt as if I could always ask her a question that will be given a direct answer.
I liked that I was using both of the text books that I purchased for this course. I was knowledgable of all assignments so I was able to get ahead. I liked that we had chat sessions as a class for extra credit.
I liked how all the assignments were available for us to view because we were able to go ahead if we wanted to and we could expect what each assignment was. I also liked CompClass because we were able to get feedback from the instructer and our classmates. I found it more helpful then the actual peer editing inside a classroom.
I liked that we got to know a bit about each other as students and also we learned about our professor at the beginning of the class. It made this online course experience a bit more personal than some other courses. I enjoyed reading some of the other students works and being able to receive positive feedback for papers and assignments that were evaluated by both our peers and our professor.
19. What did you like least about your online course experience?
Not Much
I totally enjoyed Janet Porter's online class.
N/A
The least thing that i didn't like about the online course was that the instrustion for an assignment wasn't that clear.
I liked this online class because I didn't have to go in to school and yet I still had the attention of the teacher whenever I wanted.
Do the work on time and you should have no problems.
- Sometimes I wish ALL the assignments were able to revise for more points.
Nothing.
There was nothing that I did not like. I had Professor Kay Porter in my previous semester and I'm very pleased at the way she teaches her courses. I would recommend her to anyone who needs this course.
This class was actually well organized so nothing i didnt like.
missing deadlines! but thats my own fault
The thing I liked the least about my online course experience was that sometimes I wasn't able to make it for the online chats.
Nothing really.
If you didn't do the chats you weren't able to get to know the fellow students. It was very different compared to actual class. In fact it didn't even feel like a class. It felt more like a blog but you have to graded.
The assignments and the instructor was very helpful, but I had a lot of problems submitting my assignments on YOURCOMPCLASS. It kept freezing, or uploading my essays wrong(missing text, inputting text that i did not enter).
There was a lot of papers that needed to be done without any assistance or verbal reminders, but it was my decision to take this course online.

I least liked that we didn't get weekly reminders at the beginning of the week of what is coming our way as far as assignments, tests, and chat sessions. I know that that's one of the down sides to taking an online course so I don't blame my professor.
20. What changes would you make in the writing assignments?
None
I think of any changes needed at this time.
More peer feedback for each piece of assignment. Maybe atleast twice before submitting a final!
to ask to make it clearer.
I need to re-read my papers more before turning it in.
None, they are fine they way they are.
- N/A
More videos, if possible.
The writing assignments were a fair game. There was enough readings that supported all of our writing assignments, and they were fairly easy to understand.
nothing. most of them required drafts then a final. I like this way
I wouldn't make any changes in the writing assignments.
idk.
None.
I wouldn't change anything. The writing assignments were educational, and it taught me a lot of different skills in writing. I personally would have put more time in doing my work. I think I could have done a lot better.
The writing assignments were managable, but I would've liked clearer directions on some of assignments.

Thank you for being a wonderful teacher Ms.Porter!
Ms. Porter was very interactive with her students although it was an online class. lots of class chat sessions and she responds to emails very quickly. great class and great professor!
Ms. Porter was very helpful and always responded to emails right away so my questions were always answered.
This was a very interesting course. However, Ms. Porter made it a very comfortable experience. She was very clear in her instructions and patient.
NO COMMENT.Overall, I enjoyed this course.

21. Other comments:
I'm from different country and I had always been so nervous and insecure about my writing skills, but after taking this class I've learned so much that now I'm so proud to say that I've already gained so much confidence in writing. Ms Janet Porter is an amazing instructor even if this is my first on line class she definitely made it such a great learning experience for me. I'm so glad I have her as my teacher. I would definitely take more classes from her in the future:) Love your class Ms. Janet:)
I have really learned something this semester and I will continue to remember to use them.

5. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
Instructor is great! This is my second time taking her. I wish she was teaching higher level English courses. Very good about returning e-mails and answering questions. Gives great writing advice. I'm more confident about my writing because of Ms. Porter. She's the best English professor I've ever had.
The instructor answered all the questions I had. The peer reviews were helpful to improve my writing. We got to communicate with others on chat.
What I found most valuable about the course was the promtness of the instructor when returning essays. Also, I enjoyed having assignments where we had to comment on other students work. I also felt that the instructor put in an effort in the class. This class was not like most online classes where you hardley ever hear from the insrtuctor.
how to write proposals and evaluations and. And mainly how to write essays properly.
This course helped me learn the basic structure for every type of writing that I would need in the professional world.
With this class I found it easy to write the essays that was given because the teacher feedback help to better my writing and given enough time to write the essays. The teacher gives extra-credit which helps a lot.
Ms. Porter is strict, but very fair. She expects high quality writings; however, she is always helpful and available. I felt confident in my writings during this class. I learned a tremendous amount of new information that I can use for the rest of my life. Great course!
The way that the professor explains all the assignments and what we are doing wrong.
It was helpful that Ms.Porter was always updating grades and that she was quick to grade assignments. Also, she would always reply back to me right away when I had a question. The 60 points extra credit was also very helpful towards my grade.
I thought the peer-editing was probably the most helpful tool. Not only did it provide insight as to what others thought of the way I communicated my thoughts on to paper, but it allowed me to develop my techniques to criticize others' works constructively, and to know what to look for as an editor/teacher. In knowing that others were going to read and correct my paper, I was also able to gain confidence in my writing after reading the feedback.
I liked how quickly Ms. Porter responded to our questions. It's very helpful and makes me feel more connected with the class. Also there were a lot of extra credit opportunities. I liked the online chats with the students and Ms. Porter.
The Writer's Reference Handbook is worth its weight in diamonds. I'll use this book for the rest of my college career.
that you don't have to go to class but the instructor is really helpful all you have to do is just ask or clarify something your unsure about.
All the essays done. They were good topics.
What I found most valuable about this course is that I was able to do the work online, which gave me the freedom to choose when and where I could fit it in to my schedule. I also found that Smart Thinking and the online resources very helpful to complete some of my writing assignments.
My teacher was very helpful and quick to respond to questions
the thing that i found most helpful and valuable was, learning how to write peer reviews, grammatically correct sentences, evaluations, and proposals. These are things that students will need to master if the are continuing with english couses.
Essay writing
The preparedness of all assignments and the quick response of grading the assignments in a detailed description. The Revision of our essays to be revised one final time and if it did not come out well than you have one more chance to make changes.
The textbook as well as CompClass would have to be the most valuable and helpful about the course. The textbook was very well explained and CompClass definitely made editing and submitting work much efficient and easier.
The tutorials and the Learning Resource Center handouts were great.
I actually liked the feedback that I got from the teacher and peers in Compclass...it really helped!
The thing I found most valuable about this course was the variety of different assignments which in turn helped me develop different areas of writing.
writing standards and the different types of writing principals.
I had a few grammatical errors that I constantly made fixed. I had a chance to improve my thesis writing skills.
Writing different types of essays in general. Providing proper thesis, body and conclusion format was also helpful. Also the proper way to cite sources.
Reading the draft from students are helpful to me.
Having a good amount of time to finish assignments.
writing essays. and MLA format (new) im still having troubles..
The ability to practice many different forms of writing, and receive feedback from a variety of people.
The motivation of the instructor to get me to believe I could improve my writing. The guidance and evaluation I received to improve my papers helped me not just to understan where the problem where, but how to correct them.
Variety. The writing assignments were all different. Not just the subjects but the type of writing required.
The instructor and the other students comments helped me to improve on my writing skills.
The most valuable and helpful thing about this course was the one book we had to buy for the course "A Writer's Reference", it helps the students learn how to do works cited page, how to quote someone, ect.
I found peer reviews and instructor comments to be most valuable in helping me grow as a writer.
I improved my grammar skills.
Prof. Porter wrote detailed comments on all my papers that showed both my strengths and weaknesses. She also had a criteria for each paper, which made it helpful to understand what was expected for each paper.
I had no idea how to cite works before this course. Now I feel more prepared for future classes. Almost every class requires some writing, and this skill is already coming in handy. I think The Writer's Reference will be the only textbook I won't resell.
This course has been very useful to me, not only because it is a prerequisite, but because I had gained useful knowledge in creating effective essays. My grammar has greatly improved throughout this course and I value that. The course was difficult but I stuck through it and I am glad I did.
Course material was coordinated with on line material.
6. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
NOTHING!!!!
I didn't quite understand how to chat with others. I rarely used my books because the reading seemed difficult to comprehend. Since it is an online course, you don't get help right away.
N/A
I did not find anything least valuable. But, although taking online classes are more convenient for some students like myself who work full time and have a family to take care of, I think it's harder to keep track of school work and when we have a question about our work we don't have that advantage to ask the questions while in class.
I found everything that I learned in this class to be helpful.
Because this is an online class, the student have to be focus and stay on track.
Laulima would be down unexpectedly and I wasn't sure if the problem was on my end or not. This would sometimes cause a panic when a paper was due.
None
Nothing. I found everything about this course valuable and helpful.
Technology. As much as technology and the internet are supposed to help with the convenience of the class, I've never had so much stress in doing my assignments, especially when it came to submitting my assignments and the website not working, or the computer not registering. This was my first internet course though, so these situations also helped me to better prepare for any other courses I intend to take.
N/A
I feel the participants in the peer review did not stay on task. My group rarely provided input on the writing itself instead of the content.
the other students but they were helpful by reviewing drafts
Nothing was least valuable.
It was really hard to communicate through the chat room because so many people were talking at that same time. Also they never really stayed on topic about the assignments. Which made it necessary to communicate to my instructor through email a lot more.
nothing much
i found that the forum was the least valuable and helpful thing about the course because, it was not really used. It was only used to "post a hello" to the class. But, on the other hand, the chat room was used a lot, allowing students to post and answer their peers questions.
Nothing.
Honestly, there wasn't much that wasn't that helpful or valuable. Personally, I enjoy writing reports which is why this english class was a brezze for me yet fun at the same time.
The peer reviews and reading the comments were very helpful.
Some of the reading.
It was a online class, so speaking face to face with the professor was a downside. But overall, it was good.
Paying for compclass is a waste of money. It is the same as laulima and is a waste of time trying to figure out which site to upload work to. People take classes from community colleges to save money and paying upwards of $80 for something the college offers for free is rediculous.
Nothing everything I learned was valuable.
Everything was great!
There could have been more instruction about proper citation.
The site could be simplified. It is too confusing, there are too many links to the left side of the site under "Home." I understand we should familiarized wih the site, but it is too complicated. It took too much of my time going thru different sections just to ensure I was not missing any assigment.
Nothing.
The ineffectiveness of the corrected and graded papers. For example, the final papers are due on a Friday. The draft assignments are turned in the Friday before, but gets returned on Wednesday. I disagree and feel like there is not much time to review the instructors comments and research to improve before the final papers due date.
Everything was valuable for this course.
Nothing
Sometimes the assignments would be written out unclearly. However, if we did not understand the assignment, she would clarify things for us.
I honestly can't think of any part of the course that I would consider a waste of my time. Pretty much all of the material was a review of elementary English and writing, but it is all valuable material.
I didn't like the fact that it was online, I think I would have done much better if it were a traditional instruction class. But I'm glad I had an instructor that was very helpful with my work.
Chat sessions could have been directed by the instructor so discussions were more about the class and work assignments.

15. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
She already does a great job teaching this course.
She can explain her instructions more clearly. Maybe by using brief steps because I had many questions about some of the instructions that were given. Probably because I have never had an online class before and I'm not so familiar with the internet connections and downloading.
I dodn't think this course can be improved.
don't have a comment
I think that she is doing a great job, maybe just a little more descriptions on the writing assignments requirements.
N/A
Sometime the assignments between laulima and compclass did not match; also it was unclear if I should finish certain assignments such as peer review of late work.
I don't think she has to improve her teaching. She was helpful and always giving us feedback on how we could improve our writing.
The instructor of this course has been teaching this class for many years and her knowledge of this course and material is obvious. I thought she did a great job and cannot think of any suggestions thus far.
N/A Good job =)
Give more examples of what an effective peer review entails.
well it is hard to read many drafts and homework online but maybe get papers graded on time maybe?
More chat sessions?
I think for some of the harder assignments it would have been good to have an example of what we were suppose to be writing. Also having an extra chat session or additional instruction would have been good. Maybe have a more structured chat session to focus in on the assignment we are currently working on.
more extra credit
the course had some videos in compclass, but i think that it would be helpful if there were more. also, i think that powerpoints would be helpful, presenting students with a visual.
Good the way it is.
You are a great teacher especially through an online course. I have never met a more prepared teacher. you can tell by your preparedness that you have many experience from online courses. Thank you very much for a great course.
The instructor can improve the teachings of this course by also teaching english 151+. Assignment instructions were thoroughly written and organized and it made this course much easier. Unfortunately, she isn't teaching higher english courses.
She did a great job.
By giving some examples for some of the different assignments.
I did not like the use of 2 differnt websites, It would have been alot less confusing if we just used Laulima.
In the of the semester it was a challenge to get familiar with both of the websites used for English 100, Laulima and Compclass. Going back and forth to get the directions in Laulima then logging on to compclass was confusing in the begining.
Maybe having more group work.
Maybe by having assignments due on a certain day all the time. especially for an on-line course.. Kind of difficult to turn in assignments on different days for on subject.
I felt that the teacher did a fine job of teaching the course.
Simplified the site. Some of the sections could be grouped into a common ones.
I think that she did a wonderful job.
Return corrected papers in a timely manner in order for the students to review and revise for the final paper.
By seperating some of the more advanced assignments a part.
N/A
I think the professor should be present for all class chat sessions. I also think each session should be focused on one or a couple of topics, rather than everyone trying to figure out what to say.
The only thing I think could be improved is the time between receiving a grade/comments on a draft assignment and the time an assignment final is due. By the time comments are given, there's usually only a day or two to get the final paper done.
Nothing that I can think of could improve it, maybe a little more chats, but over all the instructor did a great job with the course work and with getting to know her and the other students.

20. What did you like most about your online course experience?
The Professor of course! Ms. Porter's assignments are actually for something, unlike other professors that just make up pointless assignments.
It was not so difficult as I thought it would be. I actually got done with my assignments in advance and it feels great to work ahead.
The ability to self pace myself.
that it fit into my schedule. I work full time with rotating shifts and have a family to take care of. Not to mention two toddlers, and being able to take an online course was more convenient for me.
I think that I felt less pressure doing this class online, and I had the freedom to do the assignments at anytime, even at 4 am!
Everything!
Ms. Porter. She made me feel comfortable right from the beginning. Also, the ability to work from my home or office is what enables me to attend college at this time of my life.
I liked the fact that our assignments were due at the end of the night, 11:55pm. Since I'm a huge procrastinator, I had enough time to send in my essays.
As a mother of young children, finding the time, energy and confidence to do my schooling is sometimes hard. However, I was able to meet many other individuals who are experiencing similar situations and struggles as well as other unique struggles of their own. To be able to communicate with others through writings and peer-editing sessions, I was able to gain confidence, from others as well as the instructor, both as a writer and editor. This class was empowering on a personal and educational level. I felt encouraged in my personal life knowing that there are many mothers experiencing what I am experiencing, and I felt encouraged as a writer knowing that my thoughts were being communicated effectively. I really liked the peer-editing assignments. I was able to learn from others' constructive criticism and also able to develop my own voice as an editor.
The live chats with the students and the teacher.
I enjoy the flexibility an online course provides me. I am able to take six courses a semester without any scheduling conflicts.
it was my first online course and i liked it, would be willing to take another online course in the future.
being able to do peer reveiws
I found that an online course is a lot like self study. In some ways it was hard to do and I can see that an online course is not for everyone as you need to be self motivated and up for a challenge as well as be a problem solver. Although there are resources that you can use such as email, chat room, smart thinking, etc. you really have to be able to read and understand what you are doing, and when you can't or you ask for help and it doesn't come (unless you are willing to wait) you need to do it yourself.
that i could still hold a job and go school
the thing i liked the most was the flexibility. it allows students to read material and do the work on their own time, without having to be seated in an actual classroom. Although the instruction was available if help was needed, by being online, it teaches the student to be more independent and responsible for their own learning.
Flexibility
Prepared instructor, all assignments readily, viewable and ready to complete. Prompt grading and returning. Great course.
It really revolved around my busy schedule. Although its online, instructor still answered ALL of my questions quickly and helped me with whatever I needed help on. I definitely recommend this instructor to following students.
I could study around my personal schedule.
I could do it at my own convenience.
The use of the many differnt online tools!
was able to do the work when there was time and the course was very well taught and information was given out promptly.
I liked the flexibility. It allowed me to take care of other classes and put aside this homework till when I was available.
I enjoyed taking online class with Ms. Porter. It was accommodating for me as a single mom of two, and it gave me flexibility. The assignments were well balanced and fair.
Getting to interact with classmates.
that it was online. Even though there wasn't a physical presence I found it very exciting to have others look at my paper and respond through compclass...
I liked the freedom to be able to do my work on my own time.
My schedule allows me time mainly for online classes. I have also found that enjoy more working on my own, but I found the interaction via chat to be very enlightening. I enjoyed the chat with the professor and the students. I really enjoyed how motivating Professor Potter was. I became to believe that I could really write something good.
The chatroom. I liked that I could ask questions and chat about assignments with other students.
I liked the fact that I learned to write different types of papers.
The correct way to write a works cited page and how to keep my writing organized.
My peers were very helpful in giving me valuable feedback to improve my writing.
Everything.
I like having a flexible schedule.
I liked the flexibility of doing the school work when it was convenient for me. I found that it does take some discipline, though, and procrastination can have a great impact on the quality of your writing. You can really tell the assignments that I planned well for and the assignments I procrastinated on by looking at the grades!
I like that I could do my course work on my own time. The flexibility that it gave me was what I liked the most. I also liked the way I didn't have to see my classmate in order for me to get to know them. I really liked how my instructor created different ways the student could get to know each other. YAYY for Ms. Porter (:
It was well organized and easy to use. I was able to find the assignments easy and we were all able to share our work and help each other.
