17. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Learn new view point, think hard.
Building setback guidelines
The guest speakers were very valuable as they were able to present the practical and professional standpoint of the academic articles we read in preparation for the class.
The guest presentations and field trip to sand island were great. Her presentations and readings were interesting.
The variety of topics covered and the information provided by the guest speakers. Groups discussions were great for hearing different viewpoints. Also, instructor's lectures were helpful and informative.
Learning how to understand theoretical frameworks. And guest lectures.
guest speakers!
Thinking in terms of systems and how integrated and interconnected natural processes are and understanding that urban environments have their own ecology.
the presenters who came to speak about their professions were very informative. As a first year in planning with a anthropology background getting to know the professions and how they work within this field, which i barely know anything about, was pretty much priceless for me. The required book "Resilience Thinking" has changed how I view systems why the dynamics of human discourse are so strongly affected environment as well as markets. The fieldtrip was a nice touch as well.
I liked the first aspects on how to use conceptual framework to identify the environmental problems, and human interact with ecosystems in urban areas
The class was very well organized and balanced. I like that Daniele brought people that work in the field on the subjects that we learned about. This way, we had a chance to connect the literature readings with practice.
Discussion and assignments: debate, project proposal, and interaction with students
Guest Lecture, Class discussion
Guest Lecturer, Debate (if worked as expected), Personal Presentation (If students were more engaged).
- guest presenters - class discussion - group project (debate)
The spread of topics covered and the guest lecturers added a broad spectrum of understanding.
Guest speaker selection and diversity was extremely impressive.
Discussion and guest lecture presentation
Discussion, hearing everyone's opinions helped me get a better understanding of some readings, Guest speakers, it was nice having someone from the 'real world' talk about what they are doing and how it incorporates with what we are learning in class.
18. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
No
Course content covered a lot of the research, which is good. However, I was hoping for a better understanding of hands-on planning.
Student reviews of paper, I would have preferred discussion to review. This improved in the end of the semester.
readings were sometimes redundant. i was expecting there to be more emphasis on the policy aspect of environmental planning. perhaps next semester, there could be more of a balance between policy and science information
Having students read their summaries in class. I felt that the time this took could have been much better used.
Not much can be spoken about what was not valuable, in my personal opinion many things in this course helped me learn. In comparison to a beginner like me, the students attending this course seemed very well off in their knowledge about this subject, almost as if they never really needed to take this class in the first place. They could be intimidating to converse with during group work or class discussion. Making known the difficulty level of the course and what is exactly required of us could have helped to ease class discussions.
N/A
The literature reviews were on the weak side.
Too much information can be overwhelming sometimes
I really think it would be more valuable for students to complete a weekly one page reading's summary and then just have a seminar format discussion at the beginning of each class.

31. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
I like the way you make recommendations. On the other hand, guest speakers are excellent. I learn a lot from them and should remain this activity in the next semester
bringing in outside experts.
I found Daniele's expertise in the area to be very valuable. Because of her background in landscape architecture and planning, she required us to read up on and understand ecological systems within the planning discipline. I think we need more environmental expertise like hers in the department.
She was accessible and sensitive to student needs.
Easy to talk to and available to answer questions.
Danielle is very enthusiastic about helping students explore what they are specifically interested in
Her technical expertise.
Being flexible and openly available for consultation after class was definitely a plus. I work 2 part-time jobs and may have to start a third so having ease of scheduling and quick feedback in emails is very very important for me. She also seems to always be open for discussion making her easy to approach.
She is very professional in this area. She was citing different examples that match with the topic. She invited different speakers who were also professional in their areas they were presenting.
The class was comprehensive without being overwhelming.
Her knowledge of the subject and clear presentations of the topics.
Helpful
She provided wide valuable of knowledge through each class. She is accessible, she listens and tries to understand students. She always welcome students for any discussion, very open, and always makes students comfortable to talk.
- very open, fair, and knowledgable - displayed true interest in course material and in how to improve
Her experience with urban ecology and understanding of resilience thinking.
Daniele was an extremely accessible professor and was always more than willing to help us out when we had questions. Her teaching style with a lecture portion of class, student presentations, and guest speakers were always engaging and allowed us to view the subject matter from a variety of perspectives.
Extremely organized and clearly passionate about the topic, keep up the clear love for teaching and wanting to improve as an instructor. UHM is luck to have you!
She teach very clear and give me a lot of new experiences
She is very knowledgable on the subject at hand and is able to break things down so we get a better understanding of specific concepts.
32. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
no
Lack of focus on Environmental policies and plans, which is the name and framework for the course.
nothing
Her lack of focus on human implications. At times she seemed nervous and hesitant in her presentations, which made them sometimes difficult to follow and be engaged in.
Sometimes what is required of our work in the class is a bit ambiguous. More detail as to what is required would help to relieve stress from both parties. I think me and my group had an misunderstanding as to what was required for the debate and I believe they got angry at me. Unfortunately due to a strict boss I cannot change my work schedule in less than a day...

33. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
more focus on how the environment relates to planning.
I enjoyed the class format. I would have enjoyed the debate if it had gone through as planned with our stand-in professor. Also, I would encourage her to continue the article summaries the way they have been conducted towards the latter half of class (with more time for discussion rather than overview of the articles).
Need to go over plans and policies more rather than focusing on urban ecosystems. The subject matter was interesting and relevant, but I felt like it should be a different class. We briefly went over NEPA and HRS 343, and that was about it for environmental plans and policies.
Because conceptual frameworks are central to the research papers, I feel it would be appropriate to spend more time on their usage in class. Maybe a hands-on example/assignment on how to use them effectively. Also a mock planning scenario would helpfulâ?¦ not sure how to do thisâ?¦ maybe a group project dealing with some issue on campus?
I appreciated the improvements made over the semester. I like organization, but I appreciated Danielle's efforts to tailor the class to the students needs.
It would be nice if she were more confident in her presentations. A greater focus on social justice would be nice. More case studies through photos or videos of examples of things working well or not well.
More detail as to what is required in our work can help students and the teacher when projects are being done. More readings would be nice too, don't hold back. Other than that, keep up the good work!! Don't let those students get you down! You are a good teacher!
none
Don't put too much schedule on class, give time for more interaction among students and between students and instructor.
- structure the lit reviews as more of a discussion vice recap
The course offered a broad understanding for those unfamiliar with environmental issues, but didnt leave me feeling like I'd grown my capacity as an environmental planner by much. more practical exercise related to env planning would be useful.
Daniele is great, I would say to just keep up the work she is doing!
The reading summaries were dry and got VERY repetitive. I would change that up for next year.
I love this course

41. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Textbooks, the experience of instructor and the guess speaker
lectures
I appreciate the (while introductory in depth) the science involved in our readings and discussions regarding environmental planning.
Guest speakers, class discussion, lectures, field trip, resilience thinking
I deepened my understanding of the field of environmental planning
guest speakers
The presenters were really interesting to give that on-the-ground application view of each topic. Also, the field trip was really useful for that reason--to better understand the realities of a city.
Guest Presenters and Kem Lowry
I liked everything from this course, because I was able to learn different type of ecosystems such as urban to watersheds.
The learning experience was paced well. The integration of literature readings and real-life experience from the guest speakers. The class was intellectually stimulating. Daniele was very knowledgeable of the subject matters.
debate activity
-same as Q#17-
- the readings from the book were better than the articles - different presenters were good - group project - small group presentation
The broad approach.
Guest speakers.
Guest speakers Discussions Field Trip
42. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
No
the amount of readings per week
I would have liked to learn more about how to effectively introduce and implement policies regarding the subject matter. However, I understand that we are stretched for time in the amount of material we can cover.
I feel the research project needs a little more guidance. Make it relate to planning directly, not just implications for planning. Did not fully grasp the usefulness of conceptual frameworks.
Student presentations
Some of Danielle's presentations felt dry, but I think that had more to do with her lack of confidence rather than the substance. Listening to the students' summaries after reading the articles and reading their summaries.
A debate with instant Google search rebuttals
It would have been useful to learn about international law and other policies that have been brought about in relation to islands that are drowning or are being affected by sea level rise. For example, what happens with the Exclusive Economic Zone when islands are completely under water. Do they still maintain their legal rights?
None
- articles - final paper terms were very vague and took time to sort through
The lack of practical exercise applied to planning.
Weekly reading summary discussion.
Guest lecture presentation
Too much reading material sometimes

Perfect Prof. I like this course so much. Keep going.
I really enjoyed this class and learned so much about the environment, as well as how to outline papers, use conceptual frameworks, and condense articles into short summaries. This course had everything I like in courses: theory, praxis, teaching of communication tools, experts, and interaction. For her first go, Danielle did an excellent job!
Keep up the good work!

Thank you for allowing me to participate and learn more about social capital and how to apply environmental policy language to my job.
Keep up the great work... You brought new nuance to the department.. you taught students to have more detail understanding about the field.
Great course.
This is excellent course
