Carrying a hula hoop around
I will remember the interesting and sometimes heated discussions of the books
How interesting some concepts were but also by how lost I felt sometimes as far as what to study or focus on for exams and quizzes.
The mandala circles that we had to place out in nature and study through observations or manipulative experiments.
the hula hoop experiment
Being able to lecture in front of the class for more than 10 minutes. It was a good experience giving a longer presentation. Also, learning the different kinds of testing questions. The Problem with Wilderness. and being able to speak with Haskell, the author of one of our required books.
the hoop project, the lectures, the dimly lit room and the intense midterms/final

helping me get into botany and learn more on how to improve Hawaiian Ecology
how much I learned that Ecology was not the field for me.
16. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
lecture and tests
I think the emphasis on synhesis of material rather than memorization was very valuable.
The general information was great
Learning how to conduct valuable research out in the field.
the power points and other students in the class
Discussion questions/roundtable conversations on Thursday mornings. It was interesting to talk with my classmates about current issues in ecology and our ideas about conservation and ecology. The inter-disciplinary questions and discussions were enlightening.
learning about ecology and how the environment works around us
Powerpoints being posted online. Some teachers refuse to post power points even when tests have basis in the teacher presentations, but having powerpoints before class (so that students may acquaint themselves with material beforehand) is very helpful.
Lectures & guests
The layout was very good. It kept up the pace while being slow enough to learn everything.

40. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
tests and quizzes
I liked the student run activities.
Getting to go out in nature and observe/study/experiment with it in real time. The helpfulness with the professor, the experiments, and the discussions were also very likable.
the presentations and the hula hoop experiment
Discussion questions/roundtable conversations in person on Thursday mornings, the Forest Unseen supplemental reading, the supplemental reading The Problem with Wilderness, student presentations, Barton's guest lecture, having powerpoint lecture slides available in advance of the class,
the lecture slides and real life examples haskell's book
Powerpoints. They're organized, easy to follow, and could actually have more detail and still be fine.
The lectures
Student activities as well lectures
The incorporation of ecological studies brought relevancy to the material being presented. It helped make difficult concepts easier to understand.
41. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
reading and discussions, especially online ones

The tests were challenging, which made them unpleasant to take, but I believe they were fair and helped me actually learn the material.

43. What changes would you make in the discussion sections?
In class ones run as smoothly as they can, although I don't agree with using them as a teaching tool. online discussion should either be eliminated because we do it in class, so we get graded for the same thing twice. If online questions remain part of the course, I would make then due at midnight rather than noon simply because I have classes at noon.
better grading style. she gave me a low score when i did talk and i dont know what else she expects from me.
Have people raise hands or go arround evenly so the people who talk a lot don't dominate and not allow polite people to speak.
Omit them, go over lecture more clearly
Change deadline to midnight. Have a rubric for the grading of the online posts.
play some back round music to set the mood
I advocate having fewer discussion sessions, especially if the online-posting portion of the class will persist through future semesters. Students will end up discussing the same 6 questions at least three times for the class alone (not including running into fellow students outside of class and talking about the questions with them), with the online discussion, small group discussion, then class-wide discussion. This seems very extraneous.
More time talking about the subject of the week rather than the books
Make it very clear what is expected to receive full credit for the on-line discussion posts. The smaller discussion groups produced more discourse then the whole class discussions, which felt forced and typically involved only a small number of participants.
44. How can the laboratory be improved?
The lab was pretty good, I enjoyed it even if i felt like i didn't get a lot out of it. I think that using more modern methods of ecology would be useful

15. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Our research projects. The opportunity we had to discuss problems in our class discussions (thanks to small group size). The fact that the teacher is very well organized helps the students get organized and achieve the goals set out at the beginning of the semester.
The lab/experiment part was something I'd never done and don't know of any other classes I would get to do it in. I'm really glad that I had a chance to take a class like this one.
Instead of using memorization to base scores on tests, the actual incorporation of facts and understanding were used to base test scores, which really makes you think and know the material.
The most valuable aspect of this course was being able to produce our own research projects from the ground up. This was one of the very first classes that I was able to do this. Usually, we have to follow labs out of a lab manual, this was a great experience.
The group research project allowed us to practice working with others as well as gain more experience in doing research in the field. Weekly discussions also allowed is to interact with different ideas about invasive topics.
16. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
My very first original research project!

41. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I really enjoyed having such a small class. It really allowed for some one on one interaction between the teacher and the students. I felt like my teacher was involved in my learning and really cared about my success. The research project was very enlightening and the discussions were relevant.
I enjoyed the discussions, it was interesting to hear about issues from other's view.
Group Project
I really enjoyed the lab portion of this class because I really love being hands on.
Field work
42. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
I wasn't a huge fan of the book. I learn a lot through books and I felt like this one wasn't optimal for this class. I liked the discussions but sometimes I felt like we had too many of them.
I did not like the exam format. Many of the questions were open ended and required you to think more interpretively than factually, which I am either not used to doing, or maybe just not good at, but I found them difficult. After getting tests back I found that I commonly misunderstood what kind of answer was acceptable or desired to get full credit. We also only had 2 exams of this type to 'practice' for the final, and I am worried that I still won't be adjusted to this type of exam question.
I wish we could have been able to conduct our experiments over a longer period of time.
43. What changes would you make in the readings?
Have a different book... if possible of course.
None.
Some were a bit hard to understand. But I don't believe tht thy should be changed for that reason
44. What changes would you make in the discussion sections?
Have fewer discussions throughout the semester.
Maybe if there was a really short pre-designed activity that was to be completed during every discussion (for the leader to begin with) to get everyone involved and thinking about the paper, people might have been a bit more enthusiastic.
None, they tied in with the lecture very well.
45. How can the laboratory be improved?
Maybe add a few more visits with our TA or professor to our work sites...
If there was a way to get students thinking about their experiments earlier, like before they have even visited the arboretum, that would give more time for data collection or experimental designing. I felt like could have used some more time to run our experiment. Maybe a list of examples or past student projects to get people thinking about it earlier.

Thank you to Nicole Hynson for a great semester. Your organization skills really made a difference and I really enjoyed this class!
I enjoyed this course over all and loved the opportunity to be hands on and greatly appreciated how helpful Nicole was.
