21. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
If you didn't understand something, she would go out of her way to explain it to you in any way to help you understand. She didn't judge you for not knowing something or for being ignorant of certain facts. She would just help lead you to a knowledgeable perspective.
Lee Ann put in a lot of time making suggestions on how to improve our writing. I have never had a Professor go so far to help students improve their writing. I wish more professor were like Lee Ann!
She enjoyed to teach and she knew her subject area well. Her enthusiasm to teach the subject and just plainly to teach was very noticeable and it helped me feel more comfortable in engaging in discussion and asking questions because I could tell she enjoys teaching. Her knowledge in the subject was also very helpful because it helped me understand fully what she taught and able to answer questions posed.
Lee Ann is very helpful when it comes to understanding concepts
Her discussions were great!
She is very understanding and helpful and sensitive to each student's needs inside the classroom and personal responsibilities outside the classroom. I'm very thankful for that.
Class discussions went very well, and helped me learn and understand a lot of new concepts.
She went over everything that we read, and she made it clear about what we were reading. She also explained a lot for the people who knew nothing about it.
She is most certainly one of very few professors that is able to relate to her students in whatever situation they are in and always made her self available to a student when they needed her. Lee Ann does her very best at explaining very vague and broad ideas/concepts to the class. I also appreciate her for introducing us to a wide range of readings whether they maybe very difficult to grasp and know what the author is talking about to comprehendible readings that clearly states the author's argument and thesis.
She was able to create a non-threatening and relaxed environment which allowed us to approach difficult subjects with our honest opinions. I had never taken a women's study course before and being a male had my reservations about the class. I had heard stories about non-women's study majors taking these courses and being run out the door. These fears were quickly alleviated due in large part to Lee Ann Wang's good nature style of teaching. She made herself very approachable and never strayed away from any opinion. If a student wanted to explore a certain trail of thought no matter how ridiculous it may have seemed she made sure to see it through to its conclusion. She always made herself available to her students. Even if the problem they were encountering had nothing to do with her course she was always willing to lend an ear, offer friendly advice, and point them in the direction of further aid. I have no complaints about this professor. She is fantastic.
22. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Nothing! She was awesome!
I had no issues with the course.
That she doesn't have her own office to have office hour.
Lee Ann encourages extreme participation is class, which I think devalues some peoples way of learning.
Lack of activities in class.
Nothing, I enjoyed everything, especially the videos to break out of the normality of lectures.
Some readings were largely ignored by the class.

The readings were very intellectually stimulating, and the course material actually challenged me a lot and broadened my understandings and perspectives.
When she made the readings short to help us better understand the content and then we went over it in class for more understanding.
I enjoyed the various teaching strategies that she uses (technology wise from YouTube to actual documentaries from legit websites).
The lectures covered the readings and helped me understand what all the legal jargon meant.

very interesting. It expanded my mind and my way of thinking.
A very interesting course, an in-depth interesctional look into the law and justice, with lots of high level concepts to digest. Worthy of being a 400 level class.

I enjoyed taking this course and learning about the law.
Great course. I learned a lot. I was out of my element the whole time but I never felt threatened or out of place.

12. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I enjoyed the class discussions.
Leaning about all kinds of violence not just physical. I have learned so much and Wang was an incredible source that provided me with lots of new and exciting knowledge.
The topics discussed really intrigued me and have inspired me to inform others about what I have learned.
I loved how open the classroom and students were from the start of the semester to the end. Lee Ann is so much fun to discuss topics with and while we shared serious thoughts we also shared big laughs!
It challenged me to think critically and I feel like I learned a lot from this class.
Great reading selection. Professor very clear communicator .
I liked having class discussions. Although I didn't really talk much, I always loved hearing other people talk and get their opinions on things. The topics presented by Lee Ann were interesting, sometimes controversial, and was always able to get the class talking.
I liked all the new information I learned such as militarization, the prison industrial complex, and our laws that effect women and especially those of color. I appreciated the presentations we had to do. She always strongly encouraged our participation in talking in class.
Lee Ann commands authority in the classroom while making students feel comfortable voicing their opinions and beliefs. I appreciated the open discussion aspect of the course.
The readings that were chosen for the course were extremely relevant and challenging. Even though much of the readings were very dense, Professor Wang encouraged the class to not become discouraged if we were not able to capture the concepts immediately. This not only kept us engaged, but we became more focused. I personally had been dreading the OC focus requirement, but I enjoyed this class so much, because of Dr. Wang's approachable attitude and enthusiasm for the course I feel better prepared to discuss social issues among my peers. Above all, Professor Wang is one of the most professional and eloquent speakers I have ever seen. Her ability to articulate the complexities of social issues and relate them with legal and political discourse was amazing, and the fact that I was able to take so much away from the course speaks to her teaching style and amazing intellect.

14. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
I don't think anything could be improved.
No need
I don't feel like this course needs any improvement besides less readings. I struggled to keep up with the readings and all my other classes which led me to not participating in class discussions as much as I wanted.
This is difficult for me to say, because if you add more oral presentations, you risk loosing invaluable readings and discussions. I would say that each student has to do the presentation, and facilitate a class discussion.

Lee Ann Wang is great teacher.
I'm glad I didn't withdraw from this class! The assignments and grades were fair and Lee Ann did her best to keep it interesting for us. GO TO CLASS! STAY IN CLASS!
Lee Ann Wang is everything you could hope for in a professor for a course with such sensitive and controversial subjects. She is knowledgeable beyond belief, passionate, engaging and compassionate.
Overall, I think this class was great. Anytime I see Dr. Wang teaching a class I immediately sign up for it. I've also recommended her courses to all of my peers.

16. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
She is like a friend, she encourages us to speak and ask questions
She's super responsive to students which is awesome! There's a lot of profs at UH that teach the same old stuff over and over in their courses each semester, but she's really flexible to changing it up to make sure that her students are getting the most out of her course.
Openness of class discussions allowed for various topics to be brought up. She allowed students to voice their opinions on the subject matter and also gave her personal opinion on how things should be done.
She related material to present day scenarios and situations in simpler terms.
She was very flexible with the class schedule and was sensitive to students' needs (she noticed when we were too tired to continue and knew that pushing forward on a day with high fatigue would not help us learn).
The readings were posted online if a student did not want to purchase the books.
She made theory relatable, made sure all of our questions were answered, and that we understood the reading when we left class.
She was such a home girl, she was kind and respectful
She explained content very well and was always available for help if we needed. She responded quickly to emails and was always very nice.
everything. the discussions, weekly assignments, and the videos helped me gain understanding from the readings better.
17. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
N/A
Having to have class through Skype or missing class was a little difficult, but she was at conferences during both times and even while she was there she tried to teach us as best as she could while she was away.
It was hard to have class via Skype when she was at a convention elsewhere.
The book list was not available over the break, so I did not have time to find copies of the books that I could afford.

The way we shared ideas
Discussions.
Potlucks :)
Broad survey of feminist theory and feminist critique of mainstream theory.
I really appreciated your understanding and the atmosphere you created in class. Discussions were interesting and I liked the mini lectures and the film we watched.
The open discussion, even though I don't like speaking in front of other people it was nice to hear the thoughts of everyone else in class on the content we were covering that week.

Better use of visual aids might have helped students comprehend the material. The class discussions were great, but usage of a powerpoint would have been extremely helpful. Not anything extensive, but a list of main arguments and ideas that she thought were important to take away from the readings would have allowed for better organization.
This course could benefit by assigning the reading then having the instructor go over the reading. The next week, the student should submit their assignment for the previous week's reading. I only suggest this because the reading materials are very hard to comprehend without having a professional explain everything first.
This course SHOULD NOT be a once-a-week class if it can be helped. Two and a half hours of feminist theory late in the day is not easy for any undergrad to deal with. If I had taken this class by itself, I would have done much better, but I had 5 classes in addition to Fem Theory because I was trying to graduate on time.
I think some students needed to be encouraged to participate a lot more. I felt that you made a valiant effort and I couldn't understand why some people just wouldn't speak. I'm not sure what else could have been done, aside from going around the room or splitting us into small groups. Maybe we could look at advertisements or film clips at the start of class (since it is a 2.5 hr class) and apply whatever theory we were reading to said material? Then later continue with discussion and questions about the reading.

This class should never be taught as a once a week class ever again. Theory is too taxing for undergraduate students to deal with 2.5 hours at a time.
Thanks Lee Ann for a great semester!
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! YOU ROCK LEE ANN! -mn

Amazing course and instructor!!! My favorite class and one of the best I've ever taken at UH Manoa!
Lee Ann is freaking awesome and I loved her class, ill definitely be aiming to have her as an instructor again.
I cannot stress enough how wonderful this class and Lee Ann were. Lee Ann was so nice, caring, understanding, patient, and down-to-earth. She made the classroom a comfortable environment and really got the class talking. She was never hesitant to explain a concept and was never impatient when students asked questions. She made sure everyone understood what was being discussed. Lee Ann's assignments were both intellectually challenging and time consuming (i.e. the readings), but were also eye opening and interesting. I can honestly say that this is an amazing class with an even more amazing instructor. UH really needs more instructors like Lee Ann!
Wonderful teacher and a very engaging class to be in.
great teacher!
I really enjoyed this course because the subject matter was controversial and intellectually engaging. Lee Ann's engaging attitude and informal discussion-style classroom helped me relate to the material. Her attitude was always understanding and compromising. The only things that I found difficult with the course structure was the changing of the dates and material on the syllabus. It is helpful to have a structured course that does not deviate from the plan too often because it then creates confusion with student's various workloads. Also, that the "original" plan for a weekly writing assignment that was at least two pages long, is a bit much for a course that is not writing intensive. With other 400-level courses, keeping up with a weekly writing assignment may be a bit challenging.

Best new teacher ever!
I hope to be in another one Lee Ann's classes in the future!
Really enjoyed the class. The readings were a little long but very interesting and interesting topics as well. Lee Ann did an excellent job on helping us if we needed and really explained the readings in a intriguing way. Our class discussions were also helpful and she was able to keep us interested.
Lee Ann is very good at explaining complex ideas so that everyone in the class is on the same page even if someone has never heard of a certain topic before coming to class. I appreciated how understanding she is when it comes to any personal issues that conflict with deadlines. She also does a great job, when meeting one-on-one, at making sure you're understanding everything and to make sure she is doing her best in general. Lee Ann is very approachable and I would recommend her to anyone taking this class.
Great teacher and perfect as is!
Lee Ann was one of the best instructors I have had. She challenged you but in a very approachable way. She was almost too cool for school. Which is a weird cliche to use, but the best way I could explain my experiences with her. I think she represents what I would like to see in more college classes in the future and that is her undeniable grasp on the subject allowed for her to give us reading materials that were some of the most relevant materials I have gotten in my four years of college. The materials always seemed systematic in its purpose and assisted the topic we were learning in class flawlessly. Also her persistence in meeting with each student one on one for every paper was refreshing and seemed crazily ambitious but was appreciated more than she will know. She was also insanely understanding and lenient with a lot of her students and I think that comes from her ability to identify with students. I could tell that this built a trust between her and her students, I wish a lot of the materials she had made optional weren't so, but it allowed students like me to read them and students that didn't want to, to have a choice. Which I think is good for college because it puts your educational experience as your responsibility. So maybe this is an overstatement, but I think what Lee Ann created represents what I think college courses should be like.
Fantastic class to take!
Awsome teacher! Topics. Are really interesting!
