Very thorough when explaining new concepts. Will continue to explain in detail if class hasn't grasped new info well.
Wish there were more SI times to go too.
To be honest, I was really nervous about taking this class with Chris only because of how tough he was from the previous semester. But I now can tell you that he has surpassed my expectations and he is one of the best teachers I ever had in my life. He clearly knows his chemistry, physics and math. The power point slides that he created for us are AMAZING! You can tell that he put so much effort into making these slides for us. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT CHRIS! Take a look at his slides its color coated, with arrows, animation. He thought of everything possible when making these slides! They are sooo detailed, which is what we students need. We need to see all the steps to see how all this chemistry stuff works. He worked really hard on each and every slide!!!! Also he is a very good lecturer, he has a great sense of humor and i love the jokes that he makes about chemistry to try and get us to understand the material. I like that he really wants us to understand. You can tell he cares about all of his students. He makes great study guides for his tests. He is very approachable and always willing to help us outside of class! I am glad I took this class with Chris, he made this class enjoyable and interesting. I enjoyed all the lectures! Keep up the good work!!! I am looking forward to CHEM 162 with you next semester!
He is a very passionate professor who wants us to do good in the class.
This course needs serious help in two ways. 1. Professor Guay is obviously knowledgeable and a decent lecturer but is very disorganized. Assignments posted late or in different places, grades not posted, homework and tests not graded and returned in a timely manner, assignments never announced, announcements that he will post information or extra credit assignments on Laulima but never doing so; these are but some of the examples. 2. The materials for this course are terrible. We have to purchase a flash drive with a computer based textbook, an on-line textbook, and a workbook that supposedly goes with the flash drive. However, the workbook is for a previous version and it does not match up with the flash drive. The flash drive itself is terrible. They have basically turned a textbook into a bad PowerPoint display. Imagine, if you will, having to sit through slide after slide being read aloud to you - I have timed it and every page takes at least 4x as long to have it read to you as it would to read it to yourself from a textbook. In other words, the same material that would take perhaps 4-5 hours per week to read and study takes 16-20 hours. More, actually, because the flash drive is technically flawed: locks up frequently, or stops working until you alt-tab back and forth a few times, is one example. Other examples are scarier, such as the incorrect formula given in one chapter (confirmed by Prof. Guay) and the infinite number of spelling and grammatical errors. The second online textbook (Mastering Chemistry - purchased only for its automated testing, I'm sure) provides exactly the same information as the flash drive; with the confusing little bonus of presenting that information differently! For example, the electromagnetic spectrum is shown in reverse of the EM spectrum shown on the flash drive. To confuse things even further, we have a 3rd version of the same materials - Professor Guay's lecture slides. Everything in this course shows a huge disrespect for students' time (and money - the materials were expensive), from the disorganization of the professor to the awful, redundant yet mismatching materials. I shared and documented problems in the materials and presented them to Professor Guay, and received an answer that he agreed but it wasn't up to him so there was nothing he could do about it. Hopefully, for the sake of future chemistry students at WCC someone is going to read this that cares and has the ability to do something about it.
The flash drive is horrific. By far the worst part of the class. I opted to buy a suplemental textbook and only used the flash drive to retrieve homework assignments. I would hope there would be strong reconsideration about using it in the future.
He is one of those teachers who make things understandable by giving real life examples. Although they are "out there" sometimes, it works and makes class funny and interesting.
Professor Guay was a great teacher. He always encouraged students to come to his office hours if they had any questions. He was always so helpful and understanding. I loved how he came up with different analogies to help the students better understand. Will definitely be taking him next semester!

He's really nice and easy to talk to. Also very flexible when problems come up.
Chris was a really great teacher. He was engaging in the lectures and taught fairly well. His illustrations were interesting and gave me a clear picture of the course concepts. It was obvious that he knew what he was teaching about and that he enjoyed it. I especially appreciated that Chris was always willing to take time to help out students whether right after class, or in office hours. He was flexible in allowing us to finish our homework sometimes a few days after it was due and willing to go out of his way to help us. One of the only things I had difficulty in the class was the assigned reading. The DVD/Flash drive curriculum is not very clear and was confusing at times. I didn't feel like I learned much from it. Also, the MasteringChemistry course was sometimes not consistent with the lectures. For example, for the 2nd to last online assignment, we were given problems on concepts we had not learned yet (Lewis structures, electronegativity). Long story short, I came into this class loving chemistry and came out of it still loving chemistry, maybe even a bit more. Thanks Chris!
Dr. Guay really enjoys teaching his students. It clearly shows that he loves what he does. Would highly recommend other students to take his classes.
Guay Has done a great job this semester. The biggest help that lifted me through the semester were the neatly done power point lectures. The power points showed step by step how to do problems. I guess the only issue I had with the class was in the beginning of the semester, where the homework assignments were problems on concepts we haven't learned from the lecture yet. But as the semester progressed, the homework synced with the lectures so it was ok. Also I think the Mastering Chemistry homework was enough practice to learn the material. Please do away with the DVD/Flash Drive reading. It was a waste of money all around and we didn't need it.
I had a great semester and hope I do well on the final
This course covers a lot of content, so there was no time during lecture dedicated to review sessions for exams. However, comprehensive study guides were provided before each exam. The use of the Trivedi flash drive "textbook", Mastering Chemistry Assignments, online quizzes, can be overwhelming at first, but now I understand that it is to get practice on the same chemistry topics but from different points of view to better understand topics as a whole. The instructor has excellent in-class demonstrations and videos. It was extremely helpful that the instructor posted lecture notes on Laulima so that I could print them and focus on listening in lecture instead of focusing on taking notes. I plan to take the next chemistry course with this same instructor, as I feel he did a great job teaching the subject.

He is a great professor and makes labs enjoyable. He also explains things thoroughly so I always know exactly what we're going to do and not confused.
always gave us extra time to finish assignment. :)
He is very good at explaining some of the harder concepts
Great job
Labs tended to be too simple and short. I expected more hands on time that would have provided more experience with the use of lab equipment and materials. We didn't get that.
Professor Guay was awesome. He was always so helpful and approachable in and out of class. I liked the way he came up with analogies to help us better understand chemistry. Definitely a cool guy who is passionate about his student success. Will definitely be taking him next semester if I can.
Good teacher.
Guay is a genuine person. He is kind and very much wants to help in any possible way. I know he had a rough first semester at WCC but in his second semester here, I have a hard time critisizing him. I can see that he is trying his best to help the students. Sometimes he was in the Math Lab and he was helping out the students that were in the MATH LAB that were working on CHEMISTRY. (Hint, hint: get a chemistry lab going ASAP)
Dr. Guay is always available whenever help is needed during experiments. He makes sure students understand the procedures and always puts student safety first.

I had a great time in the lab.
Whenever we were in lab and we asked him a question or any assistance, he always went over and beyond to try and explain to us so that we would gain a better understanding. If we ever needed help with our experience he was always willing to help us. He was a great teacher in the lab! He always checks on everyone and makes sure things are going smooth, which is what teachers are suppose to do. BUT CHRIS clearly showed that he genuinely wanted to help us and showed interest in whatever we did! HE CARES ABOUT US & WANTS US TO SUCCEED! This was my first lab and I will never forget it! I had a blast!
love him!!!
It would be helpful if the lab manual was put in sequential order and if all lab stations had the same supplies available.
I really enjoyed this class with Chris this semester. If he taught any other chemistry classes I would definitely take his class again. Thanks for an awesome semester!

I would have liked to get labs back before the lab exam or needing to write another formal report, but the grading is fair. Knowing our grades before the final would also be nice so we can prioritize studying between subjects. That said, Guay is a good teacher who cares about his students and is able explain subject matter as clearly.
The assigned DVD was problematic for some students and was not very helpful in understanding the course material (also seems to utilize the latest technology of the 90's). Using "Mastering Chemistry" online was very helpful in helping review course material and apply it to problems.
Really good analogies and power points. maybe some in class worksheets would help even better

C.G. provides materials and explanations or concepts that help to remember the material.
Generally a pretty good teacher. My only complaint is he will occasionally go a little too in-depth than necessary on some parts of the curriculum, which is why we are behind.
I think Dr. Guay is a good instructor but it almost seemed like he was teaching this class by someone else's "rules" and schedule. His lecture slides were very helpful and well presented, and provided a good study tool, as did his study guides for the tests. One thing I really disliked about this class was the required DVD. It was a pain to use, was expensive, and I ended up looking everything up online instead of dealing with it. A textbook would have been way more helpful and useful.
I really enjoyed this class but I was stressed through it the whole time. it was a difficult course but hopefully I got through it.
I would suggest teaching students formulas especially for stoichiometry from what I heard thats when most of the students dropped, formula's make it easy
Some of the content we would do during lecture time would conflict with what was on the test. The tests would seem much harder and on a whole different level compared to what we would be studying. Towards the end of the semester he began to teach more slowly and clearer to help us learn the chapters which was helpful, but the tests still seemed very difficult. Overall, he's a very smart person and teaches his subject effectively I think he should just lower his expectations for the tests and put things in so that he recognizes that the students can do the formulas, instead of the students trying to figure out all the trick questions being thrown at us.
Mr. Guay needs to update grades and return graded assignments more frequently.
I never did get the mastering chemistry dvd to work on the computer. What a waste of time and money. It made the lecture and the lab very difficult.
The only problem I had with the course this year was the text. My first time having an online text and I admit, I could not stand it. If I wanted a course online, I would take one, online... Other then the text and homework being online the course was amazing! I advise anyone who takes Chemistry that Dr. Guay is extremely knowledgable and professional instructor who makes the course fun.
Very helpful when I had questions. He was pretty reasonable about grading and extra credit.

Mr. Guay needs to update grades and return graded assignments more promptly.
The lab was fun, but for one credit, its a hell of a lot of work.
I like Dr. Guay personally, but was frustrated with how long it took to have work returned to us for review (ie we did not have our completed and graded labs back in time to use them to study for our tests that covered them). Other than that, he's a kind and fair teacher.
Dr. Guay was instrumental in developing my chemistry knowledge. The CD ROM was helpful but professor Guay's lecture notes/lectures were pivotal in understanding the material. I may be old school but I would rather have a text book to read other than listen to a CD or read off the computer. Professor Guay also helped me out with that request by directing me to the library where hard copies of the text book are available. Thanks Professor Guay.
the labs jumped around at points meaning we were doing labs that we had never learned and were expected to do pre-labs before the lecture when we are taught what it all means.
easy to ask questions, always willing to help out and answer questions
Professor Guay took a very long time to return graded homework assignments and found it extremely unfair that he did not have give us an opportunity to learn from our mistakes or improve upon our grades. Also, the lab book was our only course material so there was no resource to study for the exams since he did not return the assignments.
Lab workbook was provided by the department and in my opinion it was poorly written.
I had a few problems with this lab. I didn't like that we didn't go in order (from lab 1 - lab 13) because we ended up doing some things in the lab without any background information on them. This made some pre-labs / post- labs a lot harder than they needed to be.
