I was able to understand way more than I could understand from Cisco. Very good instructor.
A teacher that dares to go beyond the class curriculum and puts a lot of pressure on the students to succeed without being unfair or creating an stressful environment.

He has a strong understanding of the subject but i felt the class was very unorganized and very last minute. it felt as tho he expected us on the first day to have already learned everything and the class was just a forrmality. then 3/4 of the way thru we were told we had to double the amount of work we were supposed to do and had to cram a second semester into the remaining 1/4 of the semester. there was almost no hands on learning until the last two weeks of class of which he told us that if we asked for his help we failed because "you should know everything already" it felt that this class was much more difficult than it needed to be and to have a second semesters worth of work to be dumped on you in the last three weeks of class was the worst. we had up to 4 exams a week on 4 different chapters and the last three weeks or so it was up to 6 exams a week.

less work. more hands on training. less expectation to know everyting walking in the first day.

I enjoyed Dr. Mehta's teaching style.
this class i expected to be fun and informative but quickly turned into a horrible grind of seemingly pointless work just to satisfy the cisco website. it turned into my hardest class of the semester which included physics and computer programming. The only thing i really took away from this class is that I never ever want to go into a field that has anything to do with networking

I feel the most valuable were the labs, the hands on training with optics equipment...
I found the detailed explanations done by Mehta to be valuable to grasping the various concepts in this course.

Dr Mehta is always in school and is easy to find if you need help....
Mehta's enthusiasm and knowledge are a great combination for teaching this course. He is a great optics teacher.

Anil is very enthusiastic about the subject he teaches and shows that through how he teaches. His positive mindset is a driving force for those that may find difficulty in the subject. He will dedicate any amount of time to his students success, no matter what the situation may be. Anil is a valuable asset to UH Maui college.

I felt that the class actually was too long after hour and a half I was pretty exhausted because there was a lot of information to absorb.... I also feel that a way to really improve the course is too be able to have access to the lab during non class times.....
This course could be improved by giving out printed handouts with diagrams and formulas before each lecture. Sometimes the lecture diagrams on the whiteboard would sometimes get cluttered and illegible as the lecture progressed.

It can be improved by continuing the progress it has already made, and I do mean by what Anil has been able to accomplish in a short period of time.

I enjoyed this class we covered a lot of interesting topics as well as got really involved with all the labs.
I found this course to be very interesting and Mehta is a great person to teach it.
I enjoyed Dr. Mehta's teaching style.
Although our program is undergoing many changes that are necessary, I have seen many negative and positive ones, Anil is nothing but positive. I appreciate all the time and effort Anil has provided to myself both in class and my project, which was featured at the county fair. Thank you!

5. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Dr. Mehta's prefered pedagogical technique seems like it is probably better suited to graduate students than undergrad. I prefer less self- study and more graded assignments that I can do and get feedback on so I can both see how I am progressing in the class as well as get help in areas that I may not realize I need help. Dr. Mehta is improving in this area, but I think he could still be more organized and structured and have a more consistent plan ready prior to the beginning of the course.

More graded assignments, homework, labs, quizzes, and/or tests. As an example, let's use Dr. Park's method: every day he comes to class with a prepared homework handout that is directly related to the work/lecture for that day. He almost always returns the assignment back to us within one class day of turning it in as well. This allows us to track both our progress and understanding of the material in real time and know where we need additional work. I prefer this method of teaching, and would love it if Dr. Mehta could adopt a similar style.

Overall I enjoy Dr. Mehta's classes. I think he is a good teacher and very knowledgable.

1. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I value and appreciate the help that I get from the instructor and that he challenges everyone in a good way. I see that the only reason why Dr. Mehta may seem like a "strict teacher" is because he really cares for his students in learning the material that he is teaching.

Learning about transistors and their applications was the most valuable information to me. It was taught in an easy to understand way although the lack of in-class examples made keeping the information a little harder.
learning about diodes, bgts were valuable to know.

Definitely the lectures were of the most value.
The Innovation Day project allowed me to get first hand experience in programming in Python and applying it to work on a Raspberry Pi. Although in the future I would like to learn the basics in class before I am expected to present it as a project.

Dr. Mehta's teaching style is excellent and I appreciate how he uses general examples to explain to the students about whatever topic is being taught. One way to improve could be to assign some homework problems from the book so that we would further our understanding in that way outside of class.
Some Review geared to pick up from ETRO 101 and especially expanding on 101 level KCL & KVL would be very helpful at the beginning of the semester. Then moving forward from there into 210 level KVL KCL and simultaneous equations will probably be more effective. More interactive exercises where students gain practice solving Diode and Transistor Equations in the 3rd week or so of the semester would be good. Once there is some practice and proficient competency, move to labs, and then building final projects.
I feel we spent a little too much focus on the projects and not enough time working through labs and examples.

We could use more lab time in class to build circuits using what we learned about new components. Keep the lab accessible for students to come in after work between 8pm - 12pm, Monday - Sunday.
Could be improved by allowing more time in class to work on innovation day project.
I felt that if we could have had a few more hands-on projects to add to the aid of the lectures.
Giving the class 3 hours instead of 2 hours might be better. The extra hour could be for labs which we, in my honest opinion, lacked this semester.
Have a more even distribution of time spent on different subjects in the course.

1. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
the extra credit
I believe that the most valuable aspects in this class are teamwork, as we have to split into groups to do labs, and also enthusiasm or interest in the material, because without that, there is no point in taking the course.
Professor Mehta was willing to explain subjects much deeper than the course required, and answered any questions. It was great for someone to explain the basics to us
Learning the way light behaves and how optics play a role in day to day life that can also be applied to a profession. The large amount of hands on work was a great asset since we actually were able to see for ourselves how things worked instead of merely seeing diagrams in a textbook. The exams and quizzes were fair in judging our understanding on the subject matter. Also extremely important was that Prof. Mehta made the class fun. I actually dreaded missing class not out of fear, but because I wanted to learn more. It wasn't a chore, it was something to look forward to.
Doing group projects and working as a team was the most valuable aspect. Doing so made us not only think about the experiment, but try to make sense of it in a way that we could explain what's happening to each other.
I found the labs helped me understand practical uses for the information
The hands on experiments and the in depth illustrations of key concepts were the most important parts of this course. Without those, I wouldn't have been able to follow the course.

This course could be improved by having a much more fair way of testing us. Rather than having a test on the computer, maybe having a written test.
I feel that the labs in this course were a bit short. I also think that there are also problems with laulima, so that could be fixed.
Increased structure would be nice, a set schedule in the syllabus would clarify a lot. Breaks in the class, like 10 mins as 3 hrs is a long time More time to work on innovation day projects
More study material outside of the class is about the only thing I can think of. Everything else was excellent.
Laulima was not a fun way to take tests. Either changing the questions or putting more information about how the test will be graded would be great.
Better use of laulima or better exams as they seemed to be very buggy, I constantly got questions right but it said they were still wrong even tho they matched the answer key.
Slow down. Give practice assignments instead of expecting students to learn by only studying the presentation slides.
9. Other comments:
This course would have to be one of my favorites. I love the way we can do hands on labs, and I had a fantastic time working and presenting a project for Innovation Day. I also find the thing that we learn in this class to be very interesting, and I hope I am able to use this knowledge and the skills I have gained and improved on in my career.
I felt this course was challenging, but not overwhelming and frustrating. I greatly appreciated the availability and assistance that Professor Mehta provided. I initially thought the class was going to be very difficult, but Prof. Mehta made things a lot more understandable. I never felt that he was unreceptive. Though at first he may come off as intimidating, he truly is a great person and extremely fun. He never came off as condescending, but instead tried to inspire us as much and as often as possible. I truly believe he is a great asset to the college and that if the opportunity to obtain more like him occurs, it should be taken. The positives I've garnered from this course are invaluable. I look forward to learning more and conversing with Prof. Mehta. Thank you Prof. Mehta, you truly are one of the greatest teachers I've encountered.

just the exams were not well made and even when the answer was right according to its own answer key it still marked it as wrong. I still have not been graded on the major exams and have been waiting for a grade for over a month

Learning about optics and the math behind it. Also, using lab equipment to view how optics work in the real world.
Explanation, and relate-ability where helpful. He always took time to help us understand things and help reiterate on things.
The lectures followed by hands on learning in labs
lecture notes on laulima were quite helpful in conveying ideas not understood fully in class lectures.

Having more lab equipment available. Having a course study book regarding the subject matter for reference. More usage of the laulima portal to view assignments/grades.
Exam explanations. Some questions where hard to understand
a textbook for reference
the course needs a book of some kind to define objectives and aid in study, a portable source of information other than personal notes would be helpful, in class and out of class, laulima lecture notes are not available in class unless we go home and print them.

1. Other comments:
This class needs structure. This class also needs more labs. I wish I could be more constructive, but this class just needs some kind of overhaul. If we had a more concise understanding of what the class was going to entail, and the time frame in which the subjects were going to be learned, that would've helped a lot. Another problem I have with most of my teachers (and Dr. Mehta is no exception) is that the assignments are not returned in a timely manner, so we don't know what we're doing wrong until we've done it wrong four or five times. For example, I didn't get any of the assignments I had done throughout the entire course until there were only two weeks left in class. That gave me exactly zero chance of improvement over the course of the class.

1. Other comments:
Dr. Mehta is a good teacher. I like the way he teaches. He is interactive and leaves room for questions. Students are allowed to ask questions (whether students are confused, or just to add upon a topic being discussed). The class is also entertaining. Dr. Mehta has a lot of energy and enthusiasm during class and shows passion in the material. This sort of spirit keeps students engaged in the class and not fall asleep (especially since the material can be overwhelming). I wish there was more opportunity for students to write on the board (like how he had us coming up to the board in the beginning of the semester). I felt even more engaged, and this way, I was able to grasp the course material even more. I felt I could retain the knowledge even after class with this method. I find this method effective since we have such a small class size. I also wished we did labs. We did do some hands-on activity with Pure Data, but I didn't feel it was successful since we had to learn how to use the program which took time away from doing the actual activity. Maybe if we could use a program we already know, like MatLab or an easy-to-use program to use for lab exercises, I think the concepts would be better embedded in our heads. All in all, Dr. Mehta is a passionate teacher. He makes it fun to learn...even concepts that are either hard to grasp, or material that may seem pretty boring.

The official class really needs to be longer. It is way too short and we all have very busy schedules, so having to come in extra days isn't really a good option. It was nice that Dr. Mehta took extra time to help us with subjects that we had difficulty with and he was pretty understanding of our difficulties. He did a good job explaining things, but we were often unclear on what the homework was as the explanations were vague. It might be nice if more of the homework came from the book where we'd have a clearer explanation to start from. A note on the general ECET/ET program- We really need a stronger calculus background to be able to do this work.
Course instructions wasn't as clear as expected. Structure of course did not have a defined learning objective. Different approaches to subject could be explained in different ways. Granted the difficulties of course, instructor seemed to have detailed knowledge of subject and was genuinely interested in teaching.

1. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The teacher. Anil Mehta is obviously extremely knowledgeable about the subject matter and is very good at explaining it and understanding questions and explaining answers to such questions.
The in depth explanation of concepts previously covered in ETRO 102 made the material very interesting.
Everything from the course was valuable. Professor Mehta is an outstanding and very inspiring instructor. He thoroughly engages students to think critically about course material and beyond. He also motivates students to be more active in their future careers by encouraging them to seek networking and outreach opportunities in the community. It is a pleasure to learn from a Professor of his high-level expertise and he is a definite asset to UH Maui.
The different kinds of lab experiment that we did in class that related to his lectures was really convenient in our learning

Lot of labs which is great hands on
The labs allow you to actually observe, evaluate and come to understand the complex behavior and phenomena of light and various light instruments. The instructor, Anil Mehta, induced a broad conceptual understanding rather than rote memorization with his superb mathematical knowledge, lecture illustrations and willingness to answer questions in and out of class.

Better (or more organized) equipment for the labs. It seemed like half the lab time was taken trying to track down the necessary components to do the lab.
Possibly less in depth analysis of the derivation of formulas used in optical calculations. Some students, particularly those of us who don't have a deep understanding of higher math (Math 107 is the highest class in the AS degree course plan)sometimes find the lengthy discussions of these issues bewildering and disheartening.
Perhaps making a textbook mandatory. Also, this is no reflection on the Professor whatsoever, however the supplies for the assigned labs were severely lacking, which was an obstacle to timely completion of lab work as students had to wait in line for things such as lenses, etc. For future students, it would be great to ensure there are enough supplies (and an extra set or two) so that students will be set up for success.
Slowing down and double checking on class progress instead of individual progress might be good
With the 3 hour long classes, have one half be lecture then labs. It was kind of hard sitting through a lecture with alot of information like the things that he was teaching us was just overwhelming sometimes.
Could be more structured.
A bit more instruction on how certain labs were done. A few groups were confused at certain points, but nothing we couldnt solve ourselves.
understanding the problem well before executing
The labs were slowed down by mislabeling or no labeling of things like lens focal lengths and slits widths. Over several years, the lenses have been put back in the wrong envelopes. This requires a student to know or learn how to determine the focal point of a lens (actually good for understanding). However, the Newton slit slides are not labeled with their size. The problem is with the Newton slides. One can find the actual slide kit listed on their Internet site, but no slit sizes. Not being able to compare your calculations with the actual size precludes being able to verify whether one's calculations are correct, the percentage of error, or even if one is using the right formula.

He's a great teacher and you can see that he wants us to learn and understand the material but in the beginning of the course, it was just an overload of information and was kind of moving at a fast pace. It was kind of intimidating also but I guess that he assumed that we already knew the basic concepts of some things. but overall he's a great teacher, knows his stuff and just wants all of us to do well

at first i didn't think that he was a good instructor because he expected us to know a lot,but with time he got better but good instructor overall. he is always ready to help if you ask. P.S this is NASRE

1. Other comments:
This class was very informative and I learned a lot of new information in the Engineering Field. I liked that the Professor was very knowledgeable in the subject and was willing to help students. One suggestion to help improve the class would be to cover less material in detail because there was a lot of information that seemed to be covered rather quickly. Also, the problems were changed a lot during the course of the class in the middle of working through them. It would be nice to look at a problem and not have the parameters changed while students work on it.
This class was interesting but difficult. It might have helped to have a textbook to refer to for concepts. It would also be helpful to get feedback throughout the semester instead of just in the last week. Nobody feels secure about what their grade is going to be since we haven't received grades for any of our assignments except for the exam.
He's a good instructor, He's very smart.
