12. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
In class discussion and lecture power points.
all aspects were very very helpful.
The use of real world examples from his own research. Gave him credibility and showed how to apply what we are learning. Lectures tied to the book and were easily digestible.
When he related the subject to his experience and had us talk amongst ourselves, it wasvery interesting.
Dr. O'Day's own involvement with his research and the steps he took were very helpful when performing my own personal research for my (final) field research project.
I liked the use of videos and the instructors personal examples of his own field research.
O'Day used his own personal experiences to help us understand and relate to the materials. He also made us share our own projects with the entire class to see what other students are doing, which helped me to think about my own project in a different light.
Our professor was very knowledgeable about qualitative field research and it was very helpful when he would describe his own experiences doing research. I also thought it was very helpful that he had us share with the class daily what we've been doing for our project.
The most valuable aspect of the course was being able to conduct our own research topic about a specific population. This is valuable because we experience doing naturalistic observations and interviews on a subject of interest to us.
He was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about his field.
field study practice because it makes me can apply the content from the class to the real situation. So, I will know what I can do and what I cannot do which are useful for the next researches.
The assignments and quizzes were good. It encouraged you to do your project and keep up with the readings.
I think that learning to be able to conduct ourselves in the field while conducting field research was probably the most valuable. If we didn't learn that it would become hard for us to understand how we should behave when conducting research of our own.
13. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Mini Quiz's.
na
Some of the time spent sharing what we were working on maybe wasn't as effective as other things in the class. But I think it was still a useful part of the class.
nothing comes to mind
quizzes (these weren't bad, they were just "least valuable")
EVERYTHING WAS VALUABLE
I thought everything was good
The least valuable aspect of the course was the repetitiveness from "Writing Ethnographic Fieldnotes" by Emerson, Fretz, and Shaw in comparison with Bailey's "A Guide to Qualitative Field Research".
A lot of writing for not counting as a writing intensive.
hard to find it. I think this course is designed to practice and evaluate students suitably.
The lectures were not very interesting. Although Robin did try his best to make it fun for us, it's not his fault that the material was so dry and boring.

23. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
He is doing a great job.
he is all good
Offer more re-writes now that it's a writing intensive.
Hecould use other examples other than his own experience and sidewalk to better explain the material.
Perhaps include more images in his lectures.
HE IS AMAZING!!!
More in class exercises that help us with our research. Movies/documentaries to show in class
One way to improve this course is to rely more on Bailey's text. Then, specific terms or parts of Emerson, Fretz, and Shaw's text can be used to supplement the lectures and provide more in-depth explanations.
Stop reading off of the powerpoint! At least test us on the material if you're going to do that or else nobody will listen to your presentation since it's already online.
sometimes I was confused about the source of contents between Bailey's and Emerson's. Both of their content are useful and related; however, I would like to get some more opinion about these books from the instructor.
He can give more critical feedback on writing assignments.
Not sure if this can be improved, but making the material more interesting would help students stay engaged.
Having more class discussion were always great for us to bounce ideas off of you as a teacher, and even our peers. Even though, there were times that the information that we presented didn't change and some of the time we were repeating our discussions. But I did enjoy being able to get into small groups and get to know my peers better.

28. Other comments:
he is a very good teacher i really like his teaching methods
None.
I appreciate how he fought for the WI credit later applied to the course. In my college career, thus far, I cannot say that many professors would have done that. Thank you Robin!
Awesome Teacher! Friendly and accommodating toward students schedules.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR FIGHTING FOR THIS CLASS TO BE A WRITING INTENSIVE!!! YOU'RE THE BEST!!!
This course is useful. The knowledge I can get from the course could be applied to my dissertation. Hopefully, I will be able to get some suggestions from the instructor when I have some problem in the future, even though I am not the student of the course anymore.
Passionate, charismatic teacher
Robin is easily one of my favorite instructors. He genuinely cares about his students, and is really easy to talk to. His stories about doing fieldwork lightens the class and makes things less dreary. I feel really bad that he was assigned to teach this course. He did do his best to try and keep us engaged because he knew how boring the material was for us. I'm sure if it was a different subject, I would've enjoyed it more. I'm not sure if it went through, but I really appreciate the work he did to try and get the class the WI-designation. I definitely recommend him as an instructor. Thanks so much for everything! Good luck with your research in Japan :).

12. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Professor O'Day sent out reminders at the beginning of each week which helped tremendously.
The professor's participation in the discussion forums and general demonstration of interest in student success was what made the course valuable to me. He is a great teacher!
I thought the content of the chapters assigned were extremely valuable. I also really appreciated the discussions.
Being able to actually go out in the field and create my own research project was very interesting and valuable to me. Having a mini project like this has definitely given me the tools to help me in grad school.
Interaction with peers over the internet can be difficult, by including weekly posts due on the same day of the week made it extremely helpful to be successful. The podcasts and chapter summaries were also helpful and very thoughtful for him to provide. Weekly reminders on the announcements section of the site was the most helpful and valuable to stay on track.
Discussions, flexible deadlines, short & simple quizzes, up-to-date grades, and assignment feedbacks.
Completing a research project of our own was valuable to me, and getting feedback from students with peer comments.
The ability to think critically in order to design and conduct field research.
13. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
n/a
All were valuable.
I think having to do peer comments each week was least valuable. It seemed that most people were just writing to fill the space and get the grade for completing the assignment. I don't think the comments were very useful or beneficial.
None.
Nothing. The course was well structured, and informative.
I'm not sure if audio files made a difference. I would mainly use the powerpoints as supplements to the text. But they could be useful, I just never used them.
I found every part of the class to be valuable. It was structured very well for an online course.

23. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Professor O'Day is a great instructor, especially for an online course. Most times professors do not update students on their progress or remind them what needs to be done for the week. I do not think that Professor O'Day needs any improvement.

The structure and content of the course is set up very well.
Overall the course was great. I would only make the class interaction/discussion part some how a little more effective.
Nothing. Structure and expectations were extremely clear and easy to understand.
Absolutely nothing.

I think he maintains a well structured, very informative course. I would highly recommend it. There is a substantial amount of writing but it is never overwhelming if you stay disciplined. Robin O'Day has a genuine concern for each and everyone of his students and takes all feedback from students into consideration. He provides feedback and the chance to resubmit work to ensure improvement in all students' writing.
Thanks for a great semester professor!
Keep up the great work! You do an amazing job and I appreciate your feedback and understanding that structure is necessary to make an online class work.
Great online course taught by a knowledgeble professor. I would take any of his online or face-to-face courses again if this wasn't my last semester.

12. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The involvement of the teacher in my research project.
The aspect of the course that was most valuable was not mainly "Why" something is, but "What and How" about something that seemed more valuable to me as a researcher.
Learning different field research methods and putting those methods to use in a research project.
Robin was very knowledgable of the topics from his own experiences that he is able to explain.
Lectures and discussions.
When Professor O'Day would give examples of his own fieldwork experiences to help us understand what we should do and what would work in current situations
Going out and actually doing fieldwork
I think the book was really helpful and having the professor go over it as we continue our research was good for me.
learning how to do field research
I enjoyed the fieldwork aspect of this course because it allowed me venture outside the normative sit at home study. Also, this course helped me to look at situations objectively and not just subjectively, ultimately allowing me to look at society as how it exists through other people's experiences and not just through my own opinions that I have cultivated.
The lectures, adn discussions.
13. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Nothing.
The aspect of the course that were least valuable, but never the less important was the transcribing of interviews for my research project. This was the least interesting and boring part of course.
Emerson's book was very heavy.
The course was very fast paced but manageable
Powerpoints had to much wording and bored the class.

23. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
O'Day did a great job!
Maybe the course could have included excerpts(videos)of interviews and participant observations that may have been documented on PBS for example.
Its tough to fit much in such a short time. Maybe 1 book and more class discussion.
Give examples of what he wants in presentations and the final paper.
Just add more student interaction and more activities during powerpoints.
Less lecture and more interaction

Professor O' Day has already asked us this question in class and took into consideration about talking on how our research was coming along individually in class which helped me on how my peers were going about their research which I believed helped a lot of students further enhance our research.

Professor O'Day did a great job in explaining how fieldwork research works and how we can use it effectively in our projects and future work. He was very knowledgable in this field and I feel that I can really do some effective fieldwork with all his help and information he gave us. He is probably the best Sociology Professor i have had in the past two years. He is always asking if we had any questions and was always willing to help us anytime.
A great teacher that I would suggest to other students!
Great teacher
One of few professors who does not seem to mind on helping students with questions regarding the research. I have talked to the professor after class numerous times, sometimes staying for 30-45mins.
Robin is a greeat teacher, and I really enjoyed taking this class. All of his assignments were useful and explained in great detail. Robin was well versed in the class material and had great real life examples of his own ethnographic research! Overall it was an awesome class!
