12. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
|
| Our awe-inspiring teacher and discussions. |
| Excellent teacher, very hard class. I feel like sometimes the material goes
over my head, but it is still very interesting. |
| Discussions as well as the reading material. |
| The kind of materials that we read and her approach to teaching. She really makes us think critically. |
| Class discussions about reading assignments were a really effective way to understand the
reading and larger concepts and theories regarding women studies. |
| -out of her mind |
| I appreciated the essay format of evaluation for our grades. I don't think a multiple-choice test or midterms would be as effective in grasping the course material. Though the essays were difficult and strictly graded, you have a sense of accomplishment when you receive a good grade on it. When you get a good grade, you know that it was passed through a difficult grading criteria, which is uncommon in many other essay-based classes. |
| Professor was extremely enthusiastic, and channeled that enthusiasm into getting us engaged with
the material. The resources she chose fully explored each aspect of Women and Madness, and I have
left the course with the knowledge of how the psy professions have exploited women, how women
have suffered because of this exploitation, and how we can and should address the ethicacy of these
issues. Everything I want of college and more. |

14. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| Perhaps a little more guidelines on writing the essays in terms of what she
expects from us. |
| Have a few quizzes to have more material to pull a grade from. |
| Teacher's communication and more frequent office hours. |
| More specific guidelines for presentation. Especially regarding topic choice - provide
examples. |
| One short break, even five minutes, would be nice. Some visuals would be nice as well, such as including a couple documentaries. |
| The reading load was reasonable but very fast-paced for me. Most of the time I wasn't able to complete the book at the time that it was due. One book was smushed into just one week. However, the discussions were very helpful to analyze and soak-in the material. The books were assigned in a specific manner and the linear progression was obvious and necessary. |
| Requirements for final presentation were woefully unclear. We did not know if was supposed to be a
paper or a presentation from the syllabus, let alone how long it was supposed to be, etc. That
definitely needs to be fixed! |
|
|
15. Other comments:
|
| The class was challenging (a lot of required reading), but very rewarding. It was nice to have
numerous perspectives (students from different departments) especially when discussing
controversial issues issues.
Susan is passionate about her work as a professor. She really encourages her students to
work to their the greatest potential. |
| I found myself talking about the course material to other students and friends. I could explain why I use the term "manic depression" instead of "bipolar" and what the difference is. I learned about the foundation and birth of my major and the flaws within the system. I was always skeptical about the DSM and found many problems with it. However, a book that was assigned gave me more concrete examples and research to propel my ideas.
Overall, I have learned more in this class than I could have ever expected. Susan has been very resourceful and a great person to talk to, even in a non-academic manner. I hope to continue communicating with her as she has been very helpful and knowledgeable about my career and research opportunities. She also knows all the great places to eat! It has been a very valuable experience. |
| Susan needs to teach more undergraduate courses. She is the only professor who challenges me,
and pushes me to reach my potential. She inspires me to do good work; she is an excellent
instructor. |

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| The manner in which we learned information was unique. Instead of being spoon-fed principles
about gender, justice, and law, Susan presented advanced reading to us and encouraged us to work
through it so that we could learn how to learn as well as learn the material. We were given a critical
analysis of the legal system's interaction with gender, and I feel like I have a very nuanced
understanding of it. |
| Dr. Hippensteele is a fabulous teacher. She is incredibly demanding of her
students, which forced them to meet her high expectations, which I believe is
a wonderful thing. She expects full participation and full preparation for
her courses. |
|
|
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| This is one of the most valuable courses I've ever taken. |
| Dr. Hippensteele can be rather blunt at times and can occasionally expect a
little too much from her students, but all in all, she has been one of my
favorite professors. Also, squeezing a 10 minute presentation out of an 18
page paper was rather difficult and seemed almost silly. I would have
preferred that we have an informal discussion of our work instead of a formal
"presentation" when time was so short. |

23. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
|
| She sets a high standard for students, and she helps them reach it. She's enthusiastic about her
material, and she has lots of personal experiences to draw from regarding her subject matter. She is
both intellectual and grounded, and cares about both theory and practice. Susan is an excellent
instructor. |
| She's an excellent and fun professor who sets high standards for her students. She encourages
critical thought about the material, and ensures that each student will have a thorough
understanding of it. At the same time, she's open and is willing to share her experiences. She
creates a safe environment to foster discussion. |
| Wonderful. I would highly recommend her to other students and peers. We
have not yet received a grade for the course so I cannot comment on her
grading as of yet. |

|
| Thank you for providing this course! |
| Instructor was well informed, class was interesting. Unfortunately, I had to dis-continue attending this class because: 1) It was too hard for me, I was not prepared/able to do an 18-page Critical Analysis paper. 2) My Dad was confirmed with Cancer (he has tumors in his throat, his lung, the side of his ribs, etc.) and I decided to spend time with him on Wednesday and one week-end day every week... |

| Susan Hippensteele's style of teaching in a seminar class setting was the most valuable aspect of the course; she leads the class in discussion that allows us to critically analyze our reading material in such a way that we can better understand the course content, overall. |
| I really enjoyed the open discussion every class period. This made the time go by really fast and it was nice to hear everyone's opinion on whatever we were discussing. Susan is a very knowledgeable individual and offered a lot to this class. She is very passionate throughout her discussions and dug very deep into the subject matter which was really helpful when it came to the essays required for this course. |
| I really enjoyed the "round-table discussion" kind of atmosphere. We were all able to engage rather casually but we discussed complex ideas and even interacted with one another in healthy ways. |
| Instructor was extremely passionate about the subject as well as knowledgeable and well versed. I enjoyed the class and learned a lot from this instructor. Amazing. |
| first-person accounts of insanity changed my perspective on mental illness as a whole. |
| An aspect of the course I found most valuable was when class discussion would focus on women and the legal system; how the U.S. legal system is gendered and extremely sexist. |
| I think the literature was inspiring |
|
|
14. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| Prompts that were given to us and not enough time to do it. She needs to realize that we have other
classes to worry about other than hers :( |

| I honestly cannot think of any. |
| There wasn't really anything I found invaluable about this course. |

| I wouldn't say it was an aspect of the course I found the least valuable, it was more unattractive in content on a personal level. I didn't like the first text we covered in the semester. I don't know what it was about it. It was very informative but I did not find the manner in which it was written...interesting. |

21. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
|
| Realizing the reasons why I don't like psychology and it makes me thankful
that I was never interested in the field. It also makes me think that people
who goes into psychology must be crazy themselves...patient as practitioner. |
| THE TEACHER! And the reading, the books were highly thought-provoking. |
| Open discussions, icebreakers to get to know each individual in the class. This allowed everyone to be comfortable with eachother. |
| I liked the organization of the course, the way it was taught, the content material that we read, and the assignments. Overall, it was just a really great class and there isn't much for me to critique. |
| The readings were very interesting and helpful when we had papers to write. |

23. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| The amount of writing and reading was overwhelming, it was beyond a 300 level
class. It was much harder than my 400 level women studies class. The writing
prompts could be clearer and more direct. Sometimes the prompts went on in
circles, leaving me confused with the professor's expectations. And due to
the intensity of the class topic, a more welcoming environment should be
created so students can feel comfortable talking. |
| There needs to be a pre-requisite requirement for the course in some upper
level psychology or abnormal psychology. She needs to translate the context
of the material for people who are not in the field to understand better if
it continues to have no pre-requisite. I did not agree with her style of
teaching the course and thought it would have been better if she had a
student presentation schedule of the readings so we could learn from each
other and translate the material in various interpretations rather than
listen to her throw various theories and use of jargon that all students
may not understand. I don't think she took into account the diversity of
majors in the class even though she knew the class was diverse, however,
she did not simplify her lectures to accommodate the class in various
levels of their education. Her prompts were often too wordy and
complicating and seemed like it went round and round in circles. It was
hard to write an "organized" paper answering those prompts. |
| There are no ways to improve this course. |
| Course is great as is. |
| Maybe just give students two weeks for every essay and provide the prompts ahead of time (although I understand why she doesn't). |
| This course should be a Writing Intensive course because there is ample
amount of writing consistent throughout the whole semester. At least 5 pages
per every other week. Susan is a great and lively professor, but sometimes I
feel that what she expects of her students is unclear in terms of the papers
which represent most of out grade. Also, her standards of grading are much
higher than that of the rest of the Women's Studies professors, which was a
not necessarily a hindrance to my grade, but definitely a challenge. Perhaps
Susan just needs to communicate more to her students about what exactly she
wants. |
| I dont think there needs to be so many papers. It was sometimes overwhelming the amount of course work in this class. |
| This course took a lot of work and reading and writing, more then i would expect from a 300 level
class. |
| Perhaps it could be listed as a higher level course (400's) |
| NA |
| The literature we had to read in this class was at times really dense, and there was a lot of it. To get a better understanding of each book, maybe reading assignments could have been separated into smaller chunks for discussion so that more specific discussions could be had during seminars. |
|
|
24. Other comments:
|
| I think her grading should have been based more on content rather than technicalities especially if psychology is not the student's field of study.
If she felt we did not answer the questions properly then it was mostly
because her questions were not clear and her lectures were not meant for
everyone to understand. I think the assignments confused me more and gave no
clarity to her point. Not sure how she expects something specific ("framing
of issues") if she's asking "what do you think" kinds of questions for the
prompts. |
| Susan Hippensteele is the best teacher that I have ever had in my entire life; she has a brilliant mind and instructs students perfectly. |

11. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| I would have to say the classes devoted to discussion of issues around
transgender, transsexual, and intersex were the most valuable for me.
Exploring the theoretical and historiographical concepts surrounding the ways
in which we conceptualize both gender and sex were extremely interesting and
informative. |
| The reading materials for the course demonstrated the broad issues that the LGBTI community deal with in modern society. I enjoyed the wide variety of the nature of the readings (from law, to biology, to personal narrative). |
| I think the reading material gave a very in depth look into what trails and tribulations the LGBT groups face. It is very valuable to helping those that donʻt know about the topic understand more of what it is about. |
| The content. I think everyone should learn what we have learned. It's our responsibility to be aware
of what is going on in society. |
| Reading the different books and the concepts |
|
|
12. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| I would have to say the unit covering issues of migration and sexuality. I
think this could have been an interesting topic with a different group of
people, but no one really seemed to engage with the topic and therefore we
didn't get much out of it. A different book and/or a different topic would
have been more beneficial for this group. |
| I wish there were a way to encourage more participation from everyone in the class, but that is always difficult. |
| The 7 page essays we were required to write did not help me comprehend or become more knowledgeable on the topics discussed. Since the essays we wrote were not critically evaluated or asked to be rewritten for more clarity, I did not gain anything out of them. If anything I feel that since this class asked for (3) 7 page papers it should have been made a writing intensive course as well. The writing portion of this class really has nothing to do with the oral communications credit that this class is classified as and should be omitted. |

17. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| Prof. Hippensteele's vast and wide-ranging knowledge of topics relating to
gender and sexuality is what I found most valuable. Her many years of
experience in the field, as well as her multiple degrees and personal
experiences make her highly, highly qualified to teach a class like this.
She is extremely knowledgeable about a whole range of topics, and is able to
explain them thoroughly and understandably to us in class, even when the
concepts are very new, theoretical, or difficult. She is also very good at
asking questions that develop into lively and productive discussion. I
haven't ever had a professor who was as good as Susan is at leading in-class
discussions without dominating them. |
| Her ability to mediate a discussion was extremely helpful in regards to keeping the discussion on track. When the conversation veered in an irrelevant direction, she was always able to quickly pull it back.
Dr. Hippensteele's extensive experience in the "real world" and her connection to the LGBTI makes her an invaluable resource in a class with a topic such as this one. |
| Her life experience sometimes served as a background to understanding the readings we discuss in class. It makes her more knowledgeable and credible. |
| She is a wonderful teacher. always willing to explain things again if you don't understand. She made class fun and interesting, and that is not an easy task when you are discussing such serious topics. I enjoyed having her as my professor! |
| Her knowledge of the subject and passion. |
| the seminars of different peoples opinion about the readings |
|
|
18. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
|
| Probably how busy she is with her other administrative work, which often
makes her unavailable outside of class. If I needed help or feedback about a
paper I was writing, I felt like I couldn't ask her because I knew how busy
she was, and I didn't want to bother her. |
| I'll think of something. |
| She expected our writing skills to be great, but was not available much for assistance with papers. |

21. Other comments:
|
| This is a very good class. It covers a broad range of topics within the
overarching topic of "Sexualities," but it never gets off-track, and
accomplishes the aims of the course very well. |
| I am looking forward to taking more classes from Dr. Hippensteele. |
| I would like to make a suggestion that student held lectures are more relevant to the oral communications credit than writing papers is. I suggest more opportunities for speaking to meet the oral communications credit rather than having (3) 7 page papers a major portion of the assignments. |
| With all the papers that were required for this course, the course should get a writing intensive credit also! The work was relevant to the subject material, but students should get both the oral credit as well as the writing intensive credit! |
| At first, the seminar is quite intimidating for those who are not used to holding out their opinions especially on a top of sexuality and gender. This topic is very broad. |

| The fact that everyone presented a section. |
| The "seminar" basis helped me express thoughts and I found it very easy to communicate. I found
the topics very interesting and the class schedule and time was very convenient! |
| I like oral communication and I like getting feedback from superiors. I like how she allowed her students to run discussion and jumped in to add contextual facts.

12. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
|
| Class discussions |
| I like that this class is a seminar style class. Though there were a lot of
material to read, they were all very important and useful for the course. |
| i like that you really have to be engaged in the class and that you learn from your peers, not just the
teacher. |
| class topics and discussions |
| The open discussion and the knowledgable instructor |
| I enjoyed all of the required readings and felt that they helped strengthen my understanding on the course material. They were also very interesting and can be continually used a reference points throughout my academic career.
I also enjoyed the platform for discussion and felt that it allowed for equal opportunity of discussion. |
| The discussion aspect of this class was always very interesting and very helpful in understanding a lot of the assigned readings. The discussion questions made us think about how we view women and madness, and how the text looks at it as well. Sometimes strange tangents led us off into the dark, but overall, discussions were enjoyable and insightful. |
| Women and madness is a topic that deserves much more academic attention. I'm glad there's at least one class about it. |
| Discussions we had in class were great. It really helped developed my critical thinking. The ice breakers are fun also, good way to start the class. Material you picked to read was excellent. |
| No tests. |
| The readings were interesting for the most part (with only one or two exceptions). I didn't think I
could read whole textbooks in the time frame required here but the material is good enough that it
wasn't difficult. |
| I really enjoyed the seminar style classes. Helped me get really engaged, and i wasn't scared to
speak out. Usually with normal classes, i feel i dont get the oppurtunity to talk. In this class, i got to
say what i thought was correct in my mind and its inspiring for me to think more criticaly as well. |
| Stimulating class discussion led by a smart and engaging professor. |

14. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| Less reading or less books |
| This course should involve video clips so the students have a better grasp of
what mental illness is really like. It also would have been nice to have a
guest speaker who is very knowledgeable in psychology. |
| Watching some films about madness would have been interesting. Unfortunately the course material seemed repetitive sometimes, but incorporated a lot of different perspectives. |
| I would have liked to bring in other resources, such as media, to look at different aspects of women and madness, as opposed to all text. |
| Explain jargons/terms in essay questions. Even in accademic circle, people disagree on definitions. And many students are not WS major.
Discuss essay questions/what is expected in class before due date. |
| No group projects. Don't like relying on partners who don't do their share of their work.
Essays are hard to write, but probably due to the fact that you must really understand the material to be able to write about it. |
| The group presentations weren't my favorite. Individual presentations would have been much more
interesting-- I feel that group work always compromises a great deal of quality. |
| I believe that we dont necessarily need a discussion all the time. Maybe a video? or some old cases
being viewed through visuals, rather than discussion could help the class have better discussions. |
| The class was too big--although I enjoyed having a range of opinions contribute to discussions, at
the time atmosphere was less familial and less safe than I would have felt comfortable talking in.
Additionally, some of the material overlapped quite a bit, and I would have appreciated sections of
some of the books as part of a reader rather than being required to read every page in large, dense
books. |
|
|
15. Other comments:
|
| Susan is a great teacher. She made the class very interesting and is very knowledgable in the subject matter. |
| N/A |
| The first essay questions were very vague. Furthermore, regarding designing questions and grading, professor should take into account that many students probably still don't know much about "women and madness" by the time of the first essay.
For WS department: Issues of madness should be touched upon in intro courses because women are traditionally considered emotional (ie. psychologically unstable). |
| I really enjoyed being in your class. |
| We had to write a lot for a class that wasn't writing intensive. |
| Highly recommend this class, super fun, very instructional, and teaches how to think critically. The essays are kind of rough though. |
| Dr. Hippensteele is a wonderful professor and I can see why so many students faithfully return to
her classes every semester. I will definitely seek her courses out again in the future.
I would have liked to have had discussions on the paper topics the days we turned them in, I was
curious to hear what others had to say on those subjects. They were very provocative and
sometimes difficult to piece together, so hearing how others interpreted them would have been
interesting. |

10. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
|
| I love the open discussion and how each person is able to express his/her ideas. The papers have greatly improved my writing as well. Although they are a bit long (10 pages), I guess I can see them as something that really strengthened my academic writing skills. The teacher is very nice, very open, very considerate. |
| That the class is in seminar format, and that you learn from other students. |
| The group discussions. |
| The class discussions and oral based nature of the course. It would not have been nearly as
engaging if it were a lectured course. Instead, drawing insight from the classmates and the teacher
helped create a better awareness of the material and gender and violence in general. |
| I liked the way the class was set up-- with weekly discussions lead by the students. |
| Ice breakers!!! and listening to different opinions of the reading materials. |
| i really liked the readings and the discussions about domestic violence. first time being introduced to "us vs. them" thinking. |
| Seeing as this was an oral communications class-it went very well. It was nice to hear from everyone in the class. Whether it was different opinions or experiences, everything makes you understand the material a lot more. Some of the information was very hard to digest because it was very serious and the readings were a little hard to understand. But Susan really knows her stuff so she made it easy to understand. This course really opens your eyes to a lot of difficulties that minorities face and different industrial complexes. It is a different way to view the world and I have shared a lot of this information with my friends and family! I would want everyone to take a course like this!! |
| I really liked the group discussions. I felt extremely comforatble in class and felt that my opinion was valued. |
| i loved the discussion. susan was very smart and easy to talk to, i really really enjoyed this class |
| The instructor pushed students to think much deeper and more critically about the material we
were covering. The seminar based, 150 minute class periods allowed for in depth discussion that I
find shorter classes lack. |
| I like how the course is set up to where it is mainly student discussions with some guidance from the professor. Essay prompts given between books/readings were challenging to the point that made you think with a whole new perspective. |

12. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| None for me. |
| I feel that the course could be improved if the size of the papers were cut down. If the papers are
cut down another option could be to create another paper. Writing 3 ten page papers when the
class isn't even a Writing Intensive class was pretty intense. This class should be WI. |
| Since it is not writing intensive the papers should not be as long. Or it should have at least been made both writing intensive and as an oral communications course. |
| There was a lot of wasting time in the beginning with going around in the circle. I agree it was fun
and we got to know each other but it also took a half hour. I also think an interesting thing to try is
a closing statement or summary from the professor at the end of each class will help wrap up the
student leaders and the classes general understanding of the material overall. |
| SHORTER PAPERS!! 6-7 pages instead of 10. |
| don't care for the incite book as much as the others. |
| More explanations for essay prompts. |
| The course covered a much broader range of issues than I expected, and the only way I could
possibly imagine it being improved would be removing the in-class films to allow for even more
discussion. |

28. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| Overall the layout of this course was excellent. I think this course could perhaps incorporate more (shorter) clips of news or documentaries dealing with various situations in different countries. |
| I do feel that a grading system should be set up for the papers as well as some guidelines. Had I known that I could have submitted 6 pages and still gotten an A as a grade even though it was made clear that 10 pages was the MINIMUM, I would have definete |
| maybe shorter essays? |
| I personally didnt like the the papers.... I rather do an exam and maybe one paper. |
| 1. More time for paper, they are difficult subjects to get your head around, I feel like I needed more time to organize and make sure I fully understand what I am writing. |
