9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I liked the overall survey of the course content. I found the broad sweep of subjects and people in this field to be valuable. I know some others complained, but I appreciated the use of videos to help convey content. It was a nice break from all the reading that I have to do otherwise, and videos are able to convey more than text can. For example, I could not have understood the clear cutting of mountaintops without seeing it in video.
Perspectives of varying religions and of atheists on spiritual ecology
My favourite parts of the course were the discussions we had in class and on Laulima--there are some very clever people in that class.
Reading materials, numerous sources for further study were provided. Extra work was provided for more in-depth study. Extra credit was offered.
The videos.
I think it was really excellent that Prof. Sponsel really utilizes the film medium to educate and open discussion about certain topics. I really enjoyed that even if it left us very little in class discussion time.
The films shown really helped drive home the "What is Spiritual Ecology". I also really enjoyed reading the Professor's book and plan on sharing with my family once the course is done.
10. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I did not enjoy the online discussion aspect. I believe that it can be a valuable tool, but I don't feel like the requirements for participation and grading were clearly outlined from the beginning. As the semester progressed and as the requirements were further clarified, It ended up taking more time than expected which, for me, was the biggest deterrent.
Probably the early movie about mountain top mining that kept inserting biblical quotes but gave very little actual input from congregation members
There was a firm mindset of 'the West is bad, indigenous peoples are superior, and the world is going to Hell in a handbasket' that sometimes made it hard to have a nuanced conversation about culture.
He allowed one particular student to dominate class discussions.
The journals or laulima. Didn't need to have both.
Requiring weekly journals as well as online discussion. I think one or the other would have been fine, especially when Prof. Sponsel had said that it was ok for our journals and online discussions to over lap. It was an incredible amount of writing for a non WI course.
I didn't really care for the laulima discussion. I started out responding towards the beginning of the semester but felt a few students really dominated and the discussion started becoming "out of my league". However, I enjoyed the opportunity to do a second book review.

18. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I liked a lot about the course, except for the online aspect. That could use some clearer guidelines, and especially a rubric for discussions.
Not the professors fault but the media players were substandard
We either need new digital versions of many of those movies, or we need different films--the technical issues were sometimes frustrating.
Distribute class discussions to include more people and less from just one student who doesn't raise her hand.
Require journal entries or laulima. Not both please.
prioritize student discussion and input over extra lecturing, especially since the vast majority of class was already spent watching videos.
Honestly, I enjoyed the course as it was.

29. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I would say that it's a tie between the "Global Nonkilling" books and the guest lectures.
the panel discussions were the most valuable because i got in depth knowledge about a specific ethnographic case study. we then got to teach the rest of the class about it. I also liked hearing about other case studies from classmates because we got to ask them questions and get to know them better.
I liked the panels that the class had to organize with each other. We learned how to be initiative with heavy material and we all took part of being responsible for our own assignement.
The ideas and the arguments presented in this class are extremely important and Glenn Paige's visits were great because we had the opportunity to hear and opinion completely different from the mainstream opinion.
I thought learning about ways to prevent non-killing were most valuable in this course. I think the group discussions were more valuable than straight lecture
I really enjoyed and valued this entire class. Dr. Sponsel made me raise questions that I had never even thought about before. I see the world a little differently after this class.
Guest and instructor lectures.
I think just the knowledge and experiences of the Professor were most valuable to me.
30. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
The journals.
I would have liked more guest panels that focused on current international issues. I really liked the Palestine guest panel that showed up in class from the Olelo channel. They talked about the current issue about the dibacle between Iraq and Palestine.
I still do not believe that America or any other major powers in the world will become nonkilling societies.

44. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I think maybe picking case studies that are more up to date would make for much more interesting analyses, since the case studies that were used have already been heavily exhausted in terms of the amount of research that's been conducted. For example, maybe do a case study on the "human terrain system?"
Maybe instead of a final paper he can assign mini quizzes on each panel we have from the class and from our guests presentors.
I am more interested in America that small societies outside of the United States, maybe provide more examples and arguments that prove America can or cannot become a nonkilling society.
I took this class expecting to learn more about war and aggression. I think there could be more focus on war and aggression instead of peace
I don't really see how, he's a great teacher
More films and case studies. Also allowing students to have the option of working on panels independently or in a group.
Maybe with more class involvement during lectures.

12. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I believe the way the course was laid out was in a logical and made learning easy. The way that each section had a lecture, video, and guest speaker made it easy to follow along.
Guest speakers and videos were valuable.
I think this was a very well ruonded course wiwth very good material presented by Dr. sponsel. The powerpoints were a very nice plus. The material for the class was enhanced by the four guest speakers. I also found the 65 page syllaabus which included pages of optional readings to supplement the required readings, to be of great value.
The overview of the different approaches and the major thinkers/theories within each approach. The powerpoint presentations were a good way to convey this.
Wealth of resources and knowledge that he made us aware of.
Aspects in climatological relation to human beings and how closely the two are intertwined was very interesting and has even swayed me to rethink what i should pursue as a masters. I would have liked to hear more about spiritual ecology and believe it didn't get as much time as it deserved, but considering the broad amount of subjects to cover it was understandable.
Review of specific ethnographic and field work allowed us to see the practical and applied aspect of Ecological Anthropology. I enjoyed the guest speakers and think they complemented the material to allow for the students to grasp key concepts.
Learning about the anthropological aspects of ecology was interesting for me since I'm a student focusing my studies on the behavioral ecology and population dynamics of animals.
There's an ethical outlook on the course knowledge, and I held that valuable as I learned about ecological anthropology throughout the semester.
Dr Sponsel was knowledgeable about so much that wasnt even expressed in the course, that he really gave a thorough understanding to the class. It was interdisciplinary.
The professor was rather enthusiastic and demonstrated a vast knowledge of the material.
I learned the most from the course readings.
13. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I believe that the pop quizzes were least valuable. I found that when the quiz was take home, I learned a lot more from it than if it was a pop quiz. This is because I could go back into the lecture material or the reading material and reinforce the information that I have learned previously. It was much valuable as a take home than as a pop quiz.
The readings and powerpoint lectures were too general for my taste.
Personally I found that the books were less interesting than other aspects of the course.
The class review on the the Climate Change book, i am not saying it was completely invaluable... It's only me, but somehow i feel none of the students even tried to read the passage they were assigned nor did they put any effort to summarize it. Only a few bothered to do this and some even feigned ignorance, opting for more chapters they had already taken because of their nonchalant arrogance in the matter. I found that act of behavior amongst the undergrad students disgusting even if this portion did not account for a major portion of our grade (note that boy with the skateboard...). Handing out the passages should be a bit stricter in my opinion.
There was a lot of material that I wish we could have covered more thoroughly. Lectures were often so rushed that it was hard to explore any one topic very in-depth through class discussion, something I find very valuable to comprehension.
At times some references in the power-points were unneeded, also the quizzes could be designed or would be a better benefit as reaction papers for each section of the course instead of a true and false quiz.
Attendance sheet.
Laulima would have been a nice resource.
Lack of direction in assignments. Digressed at a few moments during class. Overall, not too bad though.
The videos and lectures of this course reinforced what I learned in our course readings. However I felt what we did daily in the course could have made more connections to the course readings and utilized the readings more. As a student I learn more and am more engaged when I learn actively. I would have preferred that we discuss the course text and do large group discussion rather than viewing videos and lectures, which I feel is a more passive form of learning.

27. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I believe that he can improve his teaching by adding more words to his powerpoints especially with descriptions to his pictures. This way, students are able to recall what was said about that picture when they go home to review the powerpoint.
I would have liked more varied readings provided on the Laulima site as .pdfs, rather than having to find the articles ourselves. The books were not as interesting as I expected; I would have preferred more varied, shorter articles daily.
Nothing much, if the core of the students had been like the proactive red head girl who usually sits in the back I believe the class could have been much better! The pop quiz was good, I think it was the only "intellectual curiosity" that was making those students read the books thoroughly. I would like more guest speakers, they make the class very fun, although that one grad student with his presentation on Japanese country-side was sketchy.
Dr. Sponsel spent much time grazing outside reading material. Although I appreciate suggestions for further research, it used more class time than I would have liked and seemed to detract from main points within the required material.
The course reading tends to get a little confusing, just because throughout the course we jump around between readings so frequently, if their was a way to read an entire work and then comment on its aspects of Cultural, political, Historical, and Spiritual per work.
More class discussions
Laulima
Be more direct in what he wants us to gather from the assigned readings.
Dr. Sponsel's passion about Spiritual Ecology was apparent when we covered this component of Ecological Anthropology. However, Dr. Sponsel seemed less engaged when discussing the other components of Spiritual ecology. The course could be improved and we could learn more effectively if Dr. Sponsel seemed as excited and passionate about the other subject material that he was teaching, rather than just Spiritual Anthropology. This course could also be improved if Dr. Sponsel tested our comprehension of course readings by doing more than quizzing us on them. For some students, these quizzes are the only incentives to read the course material. If we did more graded large group discussions and presentations I feel people would be more engaged in the course and more apt to do the readings.
28. What two or three single words best describe this instructor?
Friendly: Dr. Sponsel is very friendly and approachable. He does not use scare tactics on students to instill fear in them. This is very important especially for professors because you want to encourage student learning rather than making learning a miserable experience. Enthusiastic: I can tell that Dr. Sponsel is very enthusiastic and passionate about the material that he teaches.
Enthusiastic, knowledgable, and helpful.

29. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
I believe that he is one of the best professors that I have taken a class from because of the class structure and how he teaches his students. I would definitely take another class from him.
A great professor!
Dr. Sonsel very knnowledgable and enthusiastic about the subject taugh. He enjoys teaching and sharing his knowledge with his students.
He is extremely knowledgable and is able to pass on knowledge gained from many years of experience and connections with organizations and research happening now. He is very aware of the different approaches within Ecological Anthropology and his multi-varied approach made the subject matter interesting and dynamic.
A good teacher who knows his stuff (retired?), its too bad the students didn't take theory very well. If anyone even bothered to do this ecafe thing and gave him a bad review to spite him they should get a slap in the head.
A very informative and caring person, who truly shows interest in the subject matter of this course and in the success of his students.
Awesome teacher, he knows his stuff well.
Great job
Good professor, lacks specific intent for what he want's the students to get out of his course though.
Dr. Sponsel is knowledgeable about Ecological Anthropology and has accomplished many interesting things in his research on the subject. I found the structure and way the course was instructed to be too passive for the way I learn. This is unfortunate because the material we covered is interesting and is relevant outside of the classroom.

32. Other comments:
Kokua should be more flexible with how notes are written for their students, for instance the conflict with recommending extra readings...
I enjoyed this course very much. Dr. Sponsel went out of his way to provide assistance to his students, and did so on several occasions for my personal development. He is a valuable member of the department- I have yet to meet a professor who is so invested in his students' ability to succeed within the profession. Every student appreciates this kind of encouragement.
I would recommend this class to others.
