7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| Writing the short essays. It was hard but it forced me to come to grips with the material in substantive ways. |
| This is wonderfully structured discussion course.
Prof. Kathy Ferguson brings up a conversation topic and play a key role in the session, nothing more or less. |
| Dr. Ferguson gives me an irreplaceable stimulus in critical areas of inquiry at times, which I value the most. Also, I like the course materials because it expands my thoughts. |
| Professor Ferguson effectively managed the class allowing students the opportunity for critical
thought and concepts yet she ensured that all objectives/concepts she wanted to cover were met. |
| I found the readings, overall, to be extremely valuable. There were a number of texts on the
syllabus that I had been meaning to read, and I just didn't have the time. I also always value solid
class discussion, because to me that's the entire reason to take classes. I am pretty good at reading
things on my own and getting the main points, but in class environment I get to argue about those, I
get to hear how other people relate this reading to other readings and current events, etc. |
| This was a very interesting survey of a broad range of theory. It allowed folks who are curious or need to broaden there horizon and perspectives. Excellent!! |
| The readings were very useful, both for my own research and in terms of
providing ample material for considering how to do thing with postmodernism.
The way Kathy mediated discussions was also a useful example of how to teach
postmodernism. |
| Not only were the readings valuable but the class discussions were very valuable as well! |
| Superb and manageable selection of readings. Dr. Ferguson is very good at explaining complex
theoretical concepts, while leaving plenty of room for class discussions and personal interpretations. |
|
|
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| Too much reading. The material is so dense. I felt I had to ignore some readings in order to focus on understanding the ones I selected. |
| If possible, some kind of reaction paper every other week can be helpful for the student to share their opinion with instructor and other peers. |
| After much contemplation, I decided to write what I think because I hope there is a space for improvement for the best interest of all the students, not just a few. First, I wish there was no teaching assistant (TA) in this class. A lot of precious time was taken by this TA. I would prefer to hear more words from Dr. Ferguson than from this TA who talks endlessly. It was pain that I had to hear her explanation from her narrow worldview to that extent in this kind of course. Honestly, I was kind of annoyed of her frequent interruption while even Dr. Ferguson was speaking. At least when Dr. Ferguson was talking, I wanted to hear Dr. Ferguson complete her thoughts without interruption. With that kind of interruption that is followed with her endless wordy talk, my thoughts that were wandering with Dr. Ferguson's simple yet deep words was abruptly stopped and it never come backonly empty feeling remains.
I would rather like to have a moment of silence than long words by a TA.
Often, what triggers peopleâ??s thoughts to launch into a deeper arena of thinking are the very simple yet carefully crafted words voiced by critical thinker like Dr. Ferguson. Dr. Ferguson indeed has this unique ability to throw a simple word that makes people think, and that ability should not be interrupted by a TA. Most students take the course because of this particular professor with this specific talent, and not for the TA. The TA is free to talk endlessly with Dr. Ferguson out of the class, but other studentsâ?? time in class should be a bit more respected. |
| My personal preference would have been to spend more time with the Bennett text. |
| I found that the launches were sometimes really difficult to listen to. A number of people in the
class seemed to completely disregard the instructions in a bad way. Rather than picking a few
interesting points and raising some questions, we were forced to sit there and listen to someone try
to summarize the entire piece. I don't need a summary of something I've just read. So I kind of
wish that when someone's launch was getting completely out of control that Kathy would step in. |
| Perhaps too much time was spent on Manet and discussion repeating what the
readings already pointed out. |
| We may have spent a week too much on the art aspects... |
| I had a difficult time getting started with the final papers... but that was more my own fault - or
lack of motivation. |

16. Other comments:
|
| It is not enough for me to understand deeply this arena of study because every subject for each week has profound root on its own. If possible, I want to take another advanced class to this POLS610. Thank you, professor! |
| Overall, Dr. Ferguson is a great teacher, and I like what she offers in the class. |
| A critique of postmodernism would have been refreshing, but perhaps outside
the objectives of the course. I think many of the other students got the
impression that postmodernism was all there is and provides an explanation
for everything. If anything, they should have cultivated an unwillingness to
drop anchor and remain static with any theory. That was certainly my take-
way. That said, this was one of the best classes of my graduate experience. |
| It was a great course, which I very much enjoyed! |

12. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
|
| I actually liked the videos she showed us in class. Its one thing to read about the stories of women or people in general its another to actually be able to see the things you're reading. Its easier & more intense to grasp. |
| I really enjoyed the sections about the military, and how it affects and is a part of everyday life. |
| I loved the entire course! I think Kathy is an amazing teacher! She was always to take time out of her busy schedule to help me understand the material better. I found the material interesting (I even got my husband to read some of it). I loved how it helped you see the bigger picture, how things may not always be what you see, you have to look beneath the surface. |
| Prof Fergusonʻs lectures are very well organized and the different projects she makes us do are
extremely relevant to the course material she teaches. |
| I liked the different view of the military. |
| I really like the online discussion forum, it is fun and i learned many
things from it. |
| The videos that we watch i felt were more informational. learned a lot. |
| Discussions were crucial to this course and it was always enjoyable to hear what others had to say or to have to actually think about things we wouldn't normally consider because t wasn't brought to our attention...a lot of reading between the lines. |
| I enjoyed the fact that there were no quiz's or tests so the reading assigned (while there was a lot
of it) felt more like pleasure reading, instead of being so worried about absorbing and memorizing
facts. I also liked the way in which the class lectures were delivered. I got A LOT out of this class, so
thank you! |
| Gender and militarism. I think it was interesting to know and be aware of
these things, since I never or had no idea that militarism and gender
intersect in so many ways. |
| The discussion and the implimentation of videos. |
| I loved the material, it was very interesting. |
| I really enjoyed her lectures in class. It was more of discussions than
straight lectures, which helped me learn the material more. |
| The topics we covered this semester was interesting, I learned a lot. |
| I learned a lot about the military and women that I did not know before. |
| The videos were great, very informative. |
| Learning about different countries and how militaries have an affect on them. |
| I liked that everything was layed out from the beginning, here is what you have to do, here is when its due by, turn it in anytime before then. It made things very straight forward and easy. While I dispise group projects and presentations I enjoyed the final project as it made us really learn about a war. I also loved the readings and all the books we had to read. |

14. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| More time in class to work on group projects. Less reading articles & more videos. |
| There could be more opportunities for film viewings. Also, we really didn't need to print out all the
articles, etc. |
| Maybe less focus on group work, although I do understand her outlook and agree that through
group work, you strengthen other skills. But at the same time, we should have more individual
assignments.
Also, reminder emails to do the laulima posts would be appreciated and might also encourage
participation. |
| It is good to have more film about the experience of being a female soldier
in the military. |
| There needs to be less reading....it is truely impossible to read that many pages within a certain amount of time as well as the other classes that we have.
The discussion board needs to be in order. the weeks are all out of place.
Need a general idea as to where we stand in the class |
| The books, alothough contain a lot of great information, were too much there was a lot of reading as it was and then the literature was not as easy to follow either, which made it that much harder to focus or even want t read anf then we had 4 books! With the exception of The Lonely Soldier, the others contained way too much info and could have been put into simpler writing? On top of that we had 20 page articles that were just the same. This greatly affected our discussions as most did not read the articles or just didn't care to participate. |
| I am not the biggest fan of group projects. Although I do believe they serve a purpose and help
learn how to work with others, having it be 50% of our final grade is sort of frustrating. Especially
since group projects are NEVER divided and completed evenly among group members.
to improve this situation, perhaps there could still be a group project/presentation, but everyone
does their own individual paper, instead of a collective paper. |
| Have final project be groups of two, spread out peace and war project so we can have a better survey of what we are learning as the year progresses. |
| Just grading wise, I wish it was posted so I would know where I stand in
class. |
| the readings were a bit long and hard to understand. it took too long to unpack it in class, it may be better to condense the readings to just one or two per class session or even weekly. there was so much content it was hard to keep track of the readings. |
| There was a lot of reading (sometimes 200 pages a night) and it was impossible to do all the
readings completely every night because of work from other classes as well. It would be better if
she took that into consideration when assigning the readings. |
| Less readings or not as many pages, we have other classes. |
| Not assigning so much readings at a time. |
| There was often a lot of reading, sometimes too much I thought. Also, I must say it made it difficult to come to class knowing there was no tests. Journals were so hard to remember, I know we are uperdivision students, but some kind of reminder would be good or have us turn them in by hand in class. |
| i feel the course was great and nothing needed to be improved |
|
|
15. Other comments:
|
| I think that it is easier to have more time in class or at least some time in class to be able to talk to the group about their projects because everyone has a busy schedule and its quite hard to meet up with everyone because some people don't answer emails or they don't have phones. So I think it would be more helpful to the students to have sometime in class to work on it. |
| Kathy Ferguson is an excellent professor overall, and her class is definitely worth taking for those
who are interested in how the military presence affects everyone. |
| Great professor, would definitely take another class from her and will definitely recommend her to
others! :))))) |
| I would have like to have heard some positives about women and military. |
| Over all I enjoyed the course, although it frustrated me at times (the reading haha). I would work on trying to get better discussions.
Thanks! |
| Excellent teacher, knows her material and is passionate about what she
teaches. I would take another class from her. |
| LOVED the class and Kathy. She is a great teacher and guide in the Womens Studies department and knows so much about this topic. |

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| The stuff on syndicalism |
| The mere fact that this course is =offered is of great value to me! But on a more serious note, I think the reading choices were great and really reinforced the course themes as as well as challenged me to higher thinking and alternate perspectives. |
| Dr. Ferguson's relaxed in-class style coupled with her astute and erudite perspective made for an extraordinarily vibrant and stimulating class environment. Her passion for the material was evident from the very start, and her enthusiasm for the content certainly bubbled over into the rest of the class making for an extremely successful, and intellectually fruitful, seminar. |
| It covers a path-breaking issue on politics: anarchism. |
| the course in its entirety was effective, especially for myself who had no knowledge on the aspects
of anarchism. I felt that many of my questions were answered through this course and I could not
have asked for a better group of students to have taken the class with. Kathy's personality is what
makes grad courses so enjoyable to take! |

12. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
|
| I liked the global span of the course, as well as how many areas we were able
to cover--how many aspects of militarization and women there were and how
each affected the other--these connections were great to see. The group
project was actually interesting and involved me into the class more. |
| The project and learning about other countries wars. |
| I enjoyed when Kathy broke us up in groups and the books she used were amazing! Very informative! I also loved the movies we watched, it really opened my eyes to a lot!! |
| I love this class!!! It surely a better perspective, an unbias perspective, on the presence of the military and how militarization affects everyone's life, not just those in the military and the institution itself. TERRIFIC CLASS! |
| opportunites to think outside the box. |
| All aspects of this course were very informative. Some of the course material however set me on fire but this was understandable as it was explained in the beginning of class that just about everything we covered was controversial. I found that this class thoroughly engaged me and forced me to think in ways I had not necessarily thought before. |
| This course covered a wide variety of subjects, but also managed to stick to the theme of women in the military. Professor Ferguson is a fun and intelligent woman who really makes the material relateable and interesting. |
| I liked that this professor was very knowledgeable on the subject and communicated with the students effectively. I felt that I really learned a lot! |
| I loved the range of subjects and topics we covered. Enloe's book was so amazing; I'm going to keep it after this class is over just to have handy. The subject matter was fascinating and continually relevant. It inspired just enough rage mixed with the perfect amount of hope. Thank you so much for this course. |
| Kathy is a great professor and really knows the content. I learned a great deal throughout the
course. |
| I liked how our class always had open discussions and she created an environment where we
wouldn't be afraid to speak our mind even if we had opposing opinions. |
| Most of the videos were really touching or really reached to me in ways just the reading couldn't. The novel we had to read too. |
| great reading materials |
| I enjoyed learning about the different wars and what is actually going on in our world today. |
| I loved the whole course. We got to touch on so many issues and aspects of women in the military. It was also great that the course intertwined with current events. |

14. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| Although it is a general course, I do wish that we could go more in depth for
some subject matter, since we could only cover the surface of much of the
material. I just wish that we had more time for discussion because there
wasn't as much time as I'd have liked. I liked all of the videos though, it
was just that by the time the video ended we had to wait to discuss it until
next time. |
| I think that if it were at a descent time instead of 7:30 in the morning would make this class better. |
| I guess more days for the war team presentation so we don't have to rush and have more time to present important issues. Maybe 2 teams per day? I think that would be good. |
| Longer class periods, and less online discussions. |
| The class in general I thought was excellent. From the perspective of a student who is not majoring in or obtaining a certificate in womens studies, I think the work load (readings) was incredibly overwhelming. Good, bad, I don't know but I found myself dedicating more time to this class than to the classes that were part of my major. |
| The course could be a little better organized in terms of assignments, but it is excellent otherwise. |
| I have a hard time really pin pointing how the course could be improved except the time. Class started at 7:30 am and it is just too early to be tackling such complicated and disturbing concepts. |
| Less reading please. The amount of reading did not provide me with enough time to fully absorb
the text I was reading, and most of time ended up skimming the assigned texts. |
| Fix Gartley Hall so this class doesn't have to be taught at 7:30 in the morning! Also, a more doable suggestion: This course would benefit greatly from a reader. I do most of my reading on the bus or around campus, and I don't have any portable internet, so it was difficult to get the online readings done. When I could read them, it was a hassle to print them for class. Plus a reader would allow me to keep those interesting articles for future use.
Also, while I understand the reasons behind the group project, I still wasn't a fan. Oh well. Everything else in the course was perfect, so I'm happy. |
| This course should definitely be offered as a WI course. I understand that Prof. Ferguson is not to
blame, but rather the blame is on the budget cuts! |
| Schedule is kind of hectic trying to fit everything |
| This course was good, I enjoyed the instructor |
| No imporovements. =] |

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| Learning about each political philosopher and finding traits that distinguish
that person, helped me separate all of them. |
| I think the straightforward structure of the course, with the simple reading-and-then-lecture format, was very effective. Watching Star Trek and recognizing the themes was interesting and a good supplement. |
| Connecting the philosophers to our culture and society. Being a survey course, although the information is somewhat limited there is a good overview of the material. |
| Professor Ferguson's ability to convey complex ideas in a straightforward, open minded way. |
| She knew everything about every philosopher that ever lived. I enjoy knowing I can come to her for questions. |
| Using Star Trek as a vehicle for explanation. |
| relating traditional political values to present issues and using star trek
to more easily understand them. |
| I really enjoyed her style of teaching. I feel like the group participation approaches were very effective in helping us understand concepts. |
| Not only did Professor Ferguson display significant knowledge of the information, it was obvious
that she truly enjoys teaching it! It's so refreshing to have a professor who loves to teach and
enjoys encouraging her students. |
| Lectures and readings |
| Everything. It taught a lot about the major philosophers that impact our lives and it taught us ways that it is still present in events today, even though the philosophers aren't from our time period. |
| I value how Prof. Ferguson took a seemingly unrelated topic such as a popular tv show and used it to teach Political Theory from ancient greece to contemporary times. |
| Reading material. This textbook is my new Bible! |
| Her lecture. |
| Star trek |
| The philosophers chosen. |
| Everything, the teacher is absolutely great and I learned SO MUCH from her lectures, papers, and
everything. |
| It was very challenging and lots of intensive work. |
| Class discussions and professers lectures made the difficult reading easier to grasp |
| Class discussion was amazing!! |
| The quizes were very helpful in reaffirming what we discussed in class and help to clarify ideas that were not so clear. |
| Learning about political theorist and their ideologies |
| This class is hard. I think it was a huge battle between my intellectual half
and slacker/procrastinator true self to accomplish the academic work required
for this. Professor Ferguson can break the most complex, hard to digest
reading material down to small manageable pieces. I think the acceptance that
there are ideas that are just way to complicated for me to grasp is a
valuable humble me moment that I thank you Professor for guiding me through. |
| How the instructor managed to fuse Star Trek and political philosophy
together to provide a unique approach to teaching. |
| The lecture is very effective at breaking down difficult material, so the students can understand. |
| Watching the Star Trek episodes. It really helped bridge the gap between classroom and field by being able to see the political philosophies articulated verbally by people, and not just read by us in a text. This also made me value and think about television and movies as more than just entertainment. It made me look at media I would normally view as just entertainment in a more critical way. |
|
|
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| The amount of reading was extensive |
| Nothing much. |
| I can't really come up with any parts that didn't have value. Kathy has this class down pat and knows how to use all of her time wisely. I felt like if I missed any class time I would have missed a great deal of information. I suppose the least value would be the quizzes, as they aren't any real indication of learning. However they were a useful tool in order to understand the main ideas of each philosopher. |
| The quizes didn't help much. |
| Sometimes I was so lost that I am sure she thought I didnt care. The concepts were hard to grasp if it is not your major or if all you took was a 100 level political science prior to this course. With the amount of writing, I wish it came with a WI. |
| The size of the class was too large, people felt uncomfortable during discussions. |
| Although I want to be a poli sci major, I want to go more into international
relations. While I do understand why philosophical discussions on things
like power and justice are relevant, I do not understand why this course goes
over how words are simple metaphors and all that. There were some
philosophers covered, that I did not find useful at all. |
| The quizes. |
| online quizzes |
| Nothing. |
| There wasnt a whole lot that I didnt value. |
| End of semester in-class group work (acting out Hegel and Marx); would be
cooler if all students were engaged, but the people I was grouped with were
disinterested. |
| Nothing. |
| Nothing, everything was valuable! |
| I really hated the assignment of making a visual representation of Hegel's master/slave relationship. I know some people understand better with visual props, but to me it was a first grade assignment and embarressed me because I am awful at art! Perhaps provide alternative options rather than anything art related... powerpoint, or poem for example |
| n/a |
| Probably the artistic representation of Hegel's master/slave relationship.
This was one of the hardest assignments I have ever had. I do not even know
if it made sense what I gave you BUT I do understand and can now identify
examples of this relationship. I just don't know if I can render this
artistically. Keep the project though, it just really hurt my head. |
| for having such much writing assignments it should have been a writing intensive class |
| I believe they were all valuable. I would hesitate to change anything, except maybe to lessen the length of the final paper. |

16. Other comments:
|
| The Star Trek incorporated into the class is sheer genius! Definitely helped put things into perspective, and was a welcome break from the sometimes dry/esoteric reading material. |
| Class can be boring and the amount of student ratio was too big. Discussions were hard if you were even slightly shy. She was an understanding teacher but certainly needed to make the course size smaller. |
| She was very funny in class, making them interesting and gave me motive to
come. |
| The paper is difficult to finish. With a 20 page paper, there should be a WI also attached. |
| This was an excellent course with an even better professor. I don't think most of the material would've been understood as well as it was if a different professor was teaching it. |
| Very interesting class. Use of something as unusual as Star Trek Helped to really stick concepts in my memory. |
| This, along with another class, is my favorite course from my whole college
career. |
| She is a great teacher. |
| She is probably the most intelligent teacher that I have ever met. I would recommend her to
anyone. |
| I wish that I was able to get the WI for this course. |
| Political theory is difficult, and I understand the professors want to expose us to as many theorists as possible, but rapid pace makes it somewhat difficult to really gain an understanding of all the theories! |
| Kathy is AWESOME, she is one of the best professors that I have ever had at UH!!!! one of the
BEST!!! |
| i enjoyed writing the star trek paper. Even though it required a lot of time and effort, it was fun having a political science class that nurtured creativity out of it's students. It was one of the few classes where I felt I could fully express myself. |
| While I enjoyed the Star Trek aspect of the course, I felt that the final papers were too long, at least
part 2. I had a hard time writing eight pages of analysis of an eight page story. Perhaps make it 4-
6 pages |
| Thanks for everything. This class really left me with a lot to think about. I
really enjoyed it. |
| This class felt like it could qualify as a Writing Intensive with the length of papers that needed to be written, maybe it should be one?
The quizzes were very helpful in understanding the different philosophies. They greatly encouraged, and often times required, that you carefully read the text. And the 2nd classroom we were in at the start was horrible, it only lasted 2 weeks though. |

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| Great course, instructor was awsome :) |
| The readings were diverse and extremely informative but it was Professor Ferguson's own discussion and clarification that made it both interesting and understandable. |
| The discussions in class about homework really opened my eyes to a lot of different issues that I
have never thought about before. Kathy Ferguson demonstrated superb knowledge of the course
material and themes of the course. I think the best part of the course was the teacher. She is
amazing! |
| Learning the discourses of crucial parts of history I didn't have the chance to learn. Questioning things that I wasn't aware of. Realizing the importance of these kinds of studies and goals trying to be acheived. |
| Discussion of the readings and the environment in which we can freely talk is valuable. I like that
the class was centered on critical thinking and discussing of what we read and that the lecture is
weaved into discussion, not just lecturing and briefly talking about the reading. We learn by
application and figuring it out ourselves. |
| the discussions in class were good because it helped to understand the
material. |
| She allowed us to speak our mind and provided an environment that made us feel safe and I felt
like there was no wrong answer to most things. |
| Discussion, museum assignments |
| She took her teaching to a greater extent than she needed to. All of her assignments were interesting and the required readings were terrific. This course wouldnt have been as effective if taught by another professor. She really understood effective ways to teach the course and help me gain a greater understanding to the feminist world. One primary aspect that was the most valuable was her discussions. Although I did not engage much in conversation just listening to her thoughts, opinions and experiences were enough. |
| The readings that were assigned in this course we extremely eye opening and
taught me so many new things. I really enjoyed most of the readings that
professor Ferguson selected. |
| The readings were great -- they were extremely thought-provoking and very applicable to the course themes. I also got a lot out of the museum project because I am a hands-on learner, so getting out in to the community was very productive. It was nice to put our learning to action. Further, I liked the dynamics of the classroom setting. What I liked about the dynamics was that you were an assertive leader but it wasn't like you were lecturing to us, we were always able to participate and discuss our own ideas. In fact, you encouraged this, and your manner and attitude gave the classroom a level of intellectual safety which made me feel comfortable participating and asking questions. Also, you have a very clear and comprehensive way of explaining ideas and concepts -- your ability to effectively articulate things made the class that much better and more resourceful. |

9. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| I'm not really sure the relevance of the museum project. it seememd a bit out of place with the rest of the coursework |
| NOTHING. This is the best class I've taken at UH Manoa. This class and what Kathy has taught me
has really changed my life and outlook on things. |
| None. |
| nothing, just about everything was valuable. |
| The readers were unnecessary because she lectured anyways. |
| N/A |
| I hate to say it, but I didn't get much out of the bios. Doing mine was awesome for me because I got to talk to Noenoe in person and learn more about her through her herself. I had read a book of hers and was intrigued by her ideas, but I had never met her -- so I'm grateful that the bio was an opportunity to do so. But as far as listening to other people's presentations, I didn't always retain the information, nor did I think that the information that was provided was always useful in helping me put the reading/subject matter into context, or even better understand it. I guess it depended on who was the presenter. |

20. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
|
| How snowball paper worked. |
| I thought class discussions were very informative and enjoyable. Easy to grasp the text while discussing in class. Also challenged us and pushed us to do our best! |
| the videos were fascinating. |
| THE TEACHER and her awesome insight. |
| Class time. the Museum project. The videos. |
| Discussion on the daily readings and how it fits into the "big picture" in terms of relating to other
people, places, things, etc. |
| I liked the museum project a lot, because it was fun and interesting. It was
very different. |
| I enjoyed the light workload and intense discussions. |
| Discussion was often insightful and enjoyable. Dr. Ferguson is a brilliant theoretician, but she is also an excellent teacher. |
| I liked the in class discussions the most. Not only did Kathy create a great environment for a student to learn, she enabled students to understand the world in a whole different light. |
| I think this course was so great for me because Professor Ferguson was so knowledgeable in this field. I also liked that we were learning extremely complicated ideas, but professor Ferguson was able to break them down for us
so that we could understand them. |
| I pretty much answered this question in the "most valuable" question, but I liked the politics of the classroom and I loved the materials that were assigned to bring light to the issues and topics of the course (i.e. the books and videos that we read and watched). |

22. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| maybe if it was scheduled for a later time. |
| Possibly more videos to make it more entertaining. |
| I think there were too many readings required for each class because not only
does it take longer to read but we didn't even get to finish one topic before
we had to start a new one. It went too fast, so I think there should be less
reading. |
| Make it a writing intesive course. I know it's hard because everyone needs a class like this for their
degree, so maybe provide more classes like this. |
| N/A |
| The class would have been better if the table was big enough for everyone to sit around, or if we just set chairs up in a circle. It felt really disconnected with a large table that encircle some, and left others out. |
|
|
23. Other comments:
|
| I learned a lot in this class. I would certainly take a higher, graduate level seminar class with Dr. Ferguson in the future if possible. I think she is an excellent teacher. |
| great and interesting class.
really enjoyed it. |
| I believe Kathy Ferguson is a great educator and the best professor i've had at UH Manoa. She
inspires me to become more active in the community. |
| I really liked the biographies she made us do because it is like seeing what we, youthful students can become and the inspirations it took to get us there. I love how the class is open-spaced and Kathy is truly a great teacher. |
| This was a very challenging and informative class. |
| I have been at UH for three years and Professor Ferguson was by far the best
professor I have ever had. I learned so much from her in this one semester!
I would definitely recommend this class to someone or any class she teaches.
I wish all of my professors at UH had the passion for teaching she does and
her knowledge. |
| I had a blast in this class and really got a lot out of it. Thanks for a great semester |

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
|
| I appreciate the thoughtful selection of reading material, the class discussions, the visual presentations and I think the most important aspect, the excellent professor. |
| Wide range of texts and clear identification of themes and central questions that we explored for
the semester... it was great to be challenged so profoundly and still guided in this way. I found the
course material to be just difficult enough to make me feel like I was walking on my own edge, but
as if I also would be able to ask questions about material I didn't understand or arguments with
which I didn't agree without feeling intimidated. THAT is a sign of good teaching:) |
| I have only dabbled lightly into feminist theory, and I'm glad to have taken this class because Kathy was simply magnificent. I really enjoyed the readings that Kathy picked to include in the course because they all offered different perspectives towards feminist theory. I'm glad Kathy included Judith Butler within the course because I feel that she is important to political theory in general. Kathy's own personal work was very helpful with the course, and I was really appreciativer to know her ideas and own theories. |
| For me the most valuable aspect was the introduction to many differnet writers and thinkers. |
| The films that we were able to watch. |
| The course readings and class discussions were extremely valuable. |
| I think the choice of texts, and the order of them as well, was fantastic. It was a great introduction and development, plus the coverage of how feminism interacts with other social movements/ideas was great for providing breadth. |
| kathy's discussion of the theoretical material was very helpful; the imagery, anecdotes, background, etc, all helped to unpack some very complicated concepts |
| Most of the readings were the most valuable - Wendy Browns' Essay and Theorizing Feminism
specifically. |
| Readings on civilization/nature constructs, Ranciere, Cohn article and cosmic feminism were all new to me! |
| Understanding the construction of masculine and feminine from different spheres... i.e. Western
sphere and Eastern/Oriental Sphere. |
| Class assignments and discussions. |
| The materials are effectively prepared to synthesize my thoughts. I truly enjoy all of the readings. In fact, I am planning to re-read some of them this summer with more time (no need to worry about the deadline or anything like that) to reflect and think more. It was such a pleasure to encounter these books. For me, encountering the never-heard/thought of is the sole purpose of keep learning. |
| class discussion and individual presentations. |
| The range of subject-material provided a very useful foundation to build on. |
|
|
9. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
|
| I don't like the physical arrangement of the classroom. There does not aapear to be enough room for all the students at the conference table. However, this is not specific to the course Kathy is teaching. It seems though to marginalize students on the periphery of the classroom, and inhibit participation. |
| I felt like I wasn't getting enough political theory within the course because it was also shared with a women's studies course which brought in different perspectives. While there diversity in the classroom was enlightening, there were times where I felt that some of the things we should've been discussing were being over-looked, for instance, I was interested in spending more time in Butler and psychoanalysis. |
| None. |
| While it may (emphasis on may) help students professionally, the student presentations are the worst part of this class. I understand that people have different approaches, but if the goal is to help students prepare to present, some of the presentations are awful and don't really count as presentations. There has been no professorial feedback about how to improve them so the goal is sorely missed. And while the expectations were clear about what we were to present on, some students went sorely off the mark - and were allowed to do so a 2nd time. Additionally, they tend to take up so much time that takes away from much more fruitful discussions. I feel this aspect of the class needs MUCH revision. |
| i would have liked to have a broader range of feminist theorists not based in the united states or the west; i think the discussion may have benefited from a different balance of voices that turn each other upside down and create the friction in our discussions which we talked about in some of our readings |
| Other readings - Journals on Queer Theory and some class discussions. |
| I did an undergrad certificate in WS and found I'd read and worked with much of the material we covered, whereas many of our classmates were working with it for the first time. This was a great review and an opportunity to work on making my understanding and arguments more sophisticated. I expected this class to introduce me to new and different materials as I didn't realize most of the other students wouldn't have a background in WS/feminist theory. Given that, I really enjoyed our class discussions and having classmates present, especially since we were all from different backgrounds and were able to share those perspectives in our presentations. |
| None. All the aspects of the course were valuable and of great help to me! |
| Basically, I believe there is nothing that is not valuable in life. |

20. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
|
| I appreciate Kathy's respectful approach to students. She is an excellent listener in her attentiveness to student responses. She provides learning opportunities for the students with an affirmative, positive approach that encourages, rather than inhibits student communication and participation. Instead of a pendantic, paternalistic professorial voice, her manner, her speech, and knowledgeable insights, create an inclusive learning atmosphere. Kathy provides a learning environment within which an engaged student has the opportunity to reflect individually and collectively about assigned readings, visual presentations, and facilitated class discussions in a way that encourages edification in a bottom-up process. I also think she is a generous person, who acknowledges student concerns, irrespective of how significant those concerns may appear. |
| Discussions of theoretical material... |
| I liked how Kathy included a diverse amount of reading. Kathy had stated in class at one point that in order to understand what the author is trying to say, we must first read where they are coming from, thus the different authors. |
| Its theoretical orientation |
| The Professor is awesome. She is caring and helpful. |
| Probably what I found most valuable: I think the choice of texts, and the order of them as well, was fantastic. It was a great introduction and development, plus the coverage of how feminism interacts with other social movements/ideas was great for providing breadth.
Additionally, the choice to write either a research paper or smaller, response papers that allowed for a discussion of multiple texts, was very nice. |
| i liked most aspects of the class, although a bit more discussion in small groups would have allowed more people to speak who didn't feel like talking in the larger group as a whole. i know that most everyone probably had something to say but there were many folks in the class i didn't hear from the whole semester because most of the discussion took place within the large group space. a couple times break out groups would be helpful i think |
| I enjoyed some of the class readings and discussions. I also enjoyed the movies. |
| The fact that everyone gets to present two readings in the class. This helps everyone focus on every
reading, and realize that they may have different interpretation of the text as compared as to the
one presenting it in the class. I find this challenging and at the same time enlightening! |
| I really respect the fact that Dr. Ferguson treat the student with respect.
I also velue the way Dr. Ferguson taking time to explaine things. I appreciate her occasional use of active silence and the way she moves the class on. |
| class discussions and individual presentations. |
| Kathy's ability to articulate difficult concepts was very helpful. |

22. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
|
| Due to some funny, yet course relevant anecdotes by students, and at times by the professor, time seems to slip away too quickly. Perhaps more firmness on allotted time for class presentations would be helpful. |
| Perhaps more attention could be paid to more current feminist theorizing, beyond Judith Butler. I
think it would be more useful if some of the older readings were supplied as background, but more
time was spent on feminist theory that locates itself in political theory. I love Brown's work, but I
just want more of that kind of work. |
| I would love to take the class again if it were offered in a political science focus only. |
| More Theory! Maybe Foucault's History of Sexuality as a required reading! |
| Be more stringent on what is required of and in student presentations and provide feedback on these presentations so hopefully they get better throughout the semester.
Keep track of time better; some texts have gotten no or not nearly enough digestive time. |
| more theorists not based in the US/west, more small group discussion and inclusion of more voices in the class |
| Explain the political theory more. If this class is required by Women Studies, the instructor should
understand that many students do not have a political theory/science background therefore people
and views need to be explained more. Many students were often confused in the class because of
political science discussions. |
| More queer theory!! :) |
| This course is excellent already! I have no other suggestions on improving it further! |
| 1. Less number of students
2. Maybe different time of the day?
3. More male students involvement? |
| Maybe less reading so we can digest material better. |
| More material oustide the U.S. |
|
|
23. Other comments:
|
| I'm enjoying this course tremendously, and regret not registering in Kathy's courses sooner. |
| While I've been extremely critical of of the student presentations, I think this can be remedied and this still remains one of the best courses I've taken. Professor Ferguson is one of the best professors I've had as well. |
| kathy is a wonderful scholar and teacher, i feel thankful and honored to have studied with her. i just wish we could have had more full discussion by hearing from more members in the class and other writers/theorists from different feminist perspectives transnationally |
| I felt like I had no voice in this class because I was not a political science grad. student. I did not
feel my opinions were usually acknowledged as well. |
| I really enjoyed this class. Thank you! |
| Dr. Kathy is very nice and intelligent. Overall, even if this class is very challenging to me, I think I
enjoyed every bit of it, especially the readings and the reports. |
| Thank you so much for providing the intellectual stimulus, which is not so easy to get these days. |
| Thoroughly enjoyed Kathy's seminar, I feel I have acquired a decent foundation of feminist theory that I can apply to my subject area. |
