It seemed fun and it was a focus designation - there were many choices but I wanted it.
I choose this course because it filled my minor requirement, was an E course but also because it sounded interesting. I like the fact that we use other ways of understanding the political theories and not just though lecture.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
always energized to teach the material, loved to answer questions and found alternative ways to increase participation in the class
She was fantastic. Her lectures were thorough and informative, but never tedious. She covered all of the thinkers in an accessible and interesting way, which in some cases was a positively Herculean task (Lookin' at you, Hegel). Most importantly, while some professors are obviously annoyed by questions and discussion, Prof. Ferguson actually seemed to enjoy them.
Very knowledgeable and attentive
Explaining skills
Her knowledge and experience
She is very approachable and makes people feel comfortable - honest expression.
She would translate the readings for us and point out the main readings. It is hard to understand some of these guys' writings at times.
Her notes on your homework
Her ability to explain concepts that may have seemed foreign in a way that made them somewhat relatable
She's awesome!
She was so enthusiastic! You can tell she knows and loves political theory and taught it from a different angle. An interesting one (Star Trek!)
Always very organized and easy to understand
Clearly explained concepts that were difficult to grasp from the reading.
Very knowledgeable and passionate about the course material. Always engaging and interesting to listen to.
She tried her best to translate the political theory into English or very basic Star Trek so that us mere mortals could understand it.
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
I can't think of anything. This course was phenomenal.
NA
Nothing
Lack of structure didn't keep my attention as much as I would have liked. More of a 'me' problem.
It wasn't her fault but only having 50min at a time to teach seemed to make her rush which made it hard to make notes at times.
She was always open & available
Nothing
Because she is so passionate about what she does she sometimes runs away from me and I'm not really following what she's trying to explain. She always comes back around and gets those of us that get lost though

She is one of the best instructors I've ever had
Good and challenging course, but for the amount of writing required this course should fulfill the WI requirement too.

12. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I like that Mrs. Ferguson allows us to open express our opinions and thoughts by then further challenging us to think more critically about what we just expressed.
I enjoyed the assigned readings and class discussions. It was great being in a classroom where discussions are valued over lectures.
Very well rounded group of reading materials.
Definitely the class discussions pertaining to the readings and the cohesiveness of the class
Following the weekly readings, we would discuss specifically how the methodology related to feminism. Which always lead us on tangents but those tangents made us critically think about how our perspectives of the world are affected by others and society.

14. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
More interactive activities are always nice, besides us, the students, just speaking in class.
The readings were too long and weren't very interesting most of the time and student's didn't actually read them when someone gave a presentation on them because there wasn't a point to reading it yourself. I also think that you treated the students like they were children. Most of us are in our final years of college and understand how to write essays and create presentations. I felt like there was a lot of time explaining concepts that students at this level of academia should already know and understand. It's not helpful when teachers try to hold your hand and tell you how to do everything.
Given that we had lengthy discussions, it was easy to lose track of time. If there was better time management facilitation, I think we could have benefited from some of the activities that were assigned but we didn't get to because of time constraints.
Maybe lessen the reading load a little. It's very difficult to keep up with the readings, especially for a full time student.
I think instead of each individual creating a research proposal presentation and essay, I think it would be cool if a group of students got together to carry out an actual research question using methods discussed in class.
15. Other comments:
Enjoyed this class and professor very much!
Amazing professor! Knowledgeable, insightful, and very encouraging.
I really enjoyed taking this class. When it comes to the more "science" sections of social sciences/ arts and humanities courses, my grade tends to drop because I cannot grasp the concepts. But with this class, it was easy to do.

The flexibility of teaching style and class structure.
The practice of organizing an anarchic seminar was wonderful, I enjoyed the discussions, the readings, and all the wonderful new friends.
I like how the class itself was organized around the theoretical insights from the material we studies--we were embodying the theories.
The freedom that Kathy allowed us to take in this class created an incredibly challenging, yet fulfilling learning environment. Putting theory into practice is a great way to learn theory. Go figure.

Subject matter and Professor's reputation
I was interested in the subject matter.
I need to take 600-level courses and I chose Political Theory as my focus, so I figured this was a good fit. However, my primary impetus for taking this class was that it was taught by Kathy. I took her during my undergrad and she was great then, so why not take her again?

Grasp of the material, accessibility and willingness to work with students!

Although I understand why it was necessary to make class participation one of the big things for the class, it kind of made me want to punch myself in the face. It was difficult to try to contribute to class discussions when the class was so far ahead on almost everything that was discussed. I could do the readings and still feel like I had no idea what people were talking about. BUT that's more of a me thing than anything. Grad school is hard.

12. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I enjoyed how Professor Ferguson could reiterate thoughts I could not communicate very well, yet she had an ability to understand and reiterate.
I really enjoyed the books and conversations had in this class. It challenged my thinking, and inspired me to think about intersectionality in new ways.
I enjoyed the variety of different texts from different types of sources.
Kathy is an amazing thinker and truly acts the way she says one should act. She is an excellent testament to the good that feminism and Women's Studies do. She is conscious of power dynamics and culturally aware. I cannot say enough good about her. The way she led this course reflected all the good there is about her as a professor: the material was challenging and invigorating and fascinating. In the year's worth of graduate courses so far, I have learned the most from my WS classes with Kathy.
Loved the readings and the passion that everyone brought to every class seminar. It was moving and powerful to see these connections play out in our lives.
I liked the variety of reading materials and the focus on intersectionality.
13. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Class offered once a week and or more Women Studies Classes offered.
Sometimes it seemed like class discussion would move very far away from the texts, or it didn't seem like there was as much critical engagement with the readings as there could have been. Sometimes the "launches" turned into very long presentations, and it was difficult to participate with such a large group.
It is really too much reading when taken in conjunction with doing anything else - school or work. That said, the readings are exceptional and they challenge you to think and I have never been so mind-blown (in a positive way) as with the readings I encounter in this arena.
I would have preferred more lecturing by the professor than having students fully responsible for designing the structure of the discussion. This way, main points can be addressed without too many tangents.
14. What changes would you make in the readings?
I wish we had more time to analyze reading in more depth together as a class.
Overall, I really enjoyed the readings. If I could change the readings, I would only choose some of the chapters from Framing Intersectionality, and would add a few more monographs to the syllabus to give examples of people "doing intersectionality."
Lessen them, perhaps? But only a little. It fosters educating oneself to "read smart" which is a great skill to have for grad school and life; however, by the end of the semester (when project deadlines approach) it would be helpful to have to read less. The course load is a lot, even for a grad course.
I enjoyed all the readings.
15. Comment on the physical environment of the classroom (space, noise, lighting, seating, etc.)
Blessing to be in those class rooms
I liked the new classroom in Sakamaki that we used, although sometimes the seating arrangements were a bit awkward because of the amount of people in the class. It was great that we could write on the walls for brainstorming. The construction that occurred outside of our classroom the entire semester sometimes did not make it a beneficial learning environment.
Sakamaki is great. It is nice to be able to take your shoes off for class. The ability to write on the boards and walls was fun. The bamboo-esque decor was pleasant. There is a wretched, distracting noise (even with the door closed) coming from the first floor bathroom/maintenance rooms (that column in the middle that houses the elevators as well). That noise has got to go. It's incessant and highly disruptive to class, concentration, and learning.
Beautiful classroom. One of the best on campus.
The classroom was very student-friendly and accessible.
16. What changes would you make in the writing assignments?
To be able to have writing tutors.
It would have been helpful to have more due dates throughout the semester, or a proposal deadline for the seminar paper before drafts were due. I liked that we had options for writing assignments.
I would make no changes; they were perfectly appropriate.
None. I liked having the two options for writing projects.
17. Global appraisal: Considering everything how would you rate this COURSE?

18. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
The size of the class sometimes seemed too large, and at times, it was difficult to participate, so less students in a discussion-style class would be helpful. The course could also be improved through more community-building/self-reflection at the beginning of the semester to help create more of a "safe space" for discussion.
The groups projects were a little bit of a struggle as some students were confused about the exact assignment but on the whole that is probably more them than any particular aspect of the course. More guest speakers, while not imperative, would be cool.
I would have preferred more lectures run by the professor.

It fulfilled a POLS major requirement and an E focus requirement.
POLS major requirement and I was interested in the particular subject.
I chose this course because it was required for the PoliSci major, and it was writing intensive.
I took this class to fulfill my POLS335 requirement for my Political Science major requirements.
To fulfill a Political Science major requirement.
POLS major requirement
The reason why I took this course was because it was a requirement for being a Political Science major.
I took this course for the E focus.
I was thinking about adding a Political Science major or minor so I took the required POLS 335 course. And I changed my mind about political science, but this class was cool and i found out fulfills an Ethics requirement, which I still need, so I stuck with this class.
It required a E focus and since I have taken Political sciences classes I thought it was a perfect fit and I also found out it related to Star Trek so I thought it would be an interesting course to take.
It was a requirement in my Major's Coursework.
Poly sci major, requirement.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
She knows so much about the political theorists that we study that we can ask her any questions that come to mind and she is able to answer them immediately. She presents these difficult and ambiguous theories in a very clear way so that we really understand them which is really helpful.
Very engaging teacher. Ferguson explained subject matter precisely and thoughtfully. Her friendly demeanor creates a relaxed and comfortable learning environment.
She is easy to approach for questions and used methods to get silent people like me to talk in class.
Professor Ferguson is so smart, and she is very knowledgeable on classical thinkers. She really broke down each thinker we analyzed and made them so easy to comprehend. It was so interesting to see Star Trek relate to political thinkers; I never watched Star Trek, except the movies, until this class and it is amazing how intertwined both elements are. Professor Ferguson was very easy to talk to, and if you had any questions she would help you in anyway she could.
Her explanation of what could potentially be a really boring subject was actually interesting. Her great understanding of the philosophers and her ability to explain clearly was pivotal to being apart of a great learning environment.
How she used a modern/familiar series to help us understand more about the different philosophers and their theories.
What I valued about Prof. Kathy Ferguson was that she always asked if we had any problems with the reading. When the reading was difficult, she would take more time with the subject and fully explain what the philosopher was writing about. I also enjoyed the Star Strek episodes that was shown in class because it made it easier to understand the philosopher's ideas.
Dr. Ferguson made learning about Political Philosophy very interesting.
She is so nice! She encourages a very safe and non-hostile classroom environment so the class feels comfortable with sharing and speaking up. It's genius to incorporate Star Trek into learning political theory. Using film and media help making the connection a lot easier.
She knows her subject well and was very passionate about it, if the class didn't understand something she took her time to and went over it again if need be. The readings were difficult but she was able to explain them well.
Kathy Ferguson truly is a "Student of the Game" in the sense where even though she has extensive knowledge of Political Theory/Theorists, she's still open to learning everytime she reads Political text. Kathy Ferguson's knowledge and humitlity is her most valuable qualities in my opinion.
She was passionate on lectures
Her knowledge and understanding of the matter/subject.
Unique and refreshing approach to the genre.

Professor Ferguson had always made it clear that she was available during office hours and very active with communication via email. Unfortunately, my Legislative Internship kept me from being able to have a better one-on-one relationship, but I did appreciate her ability of being in constant contact with all of her students.
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?

Least Valuable? Nothing really, maybe she could take a few classes outside like Socrates and discuss politics amongst the Polis. That would be interesting and fitting during the few weeks of discussion on Socrates and Plato.
Not that much one-on-one interaction.

Great course, great instructor.
The class was enjoyable and the philosophers that were taught were all unique and interesting. It made me interested on other works that these philosophers have done, other than the material taught in class. I would have taken the course whether it was a requirement or not.
I'm now a Trekkie! Live long and prosper!
She tried her best to get everyone in the course to participate and communicate-I tried to a few times-but I just felt like I was on the wrong track when the discussions began- but It's my fault- I should have had a face-to-face interaction possibly.
An exceptionally charming woman, clearly very knowledgable, every student respected what she had to say, and definitely got me into Star Trek. All in all a wonderful learning experience, from a vey intelligent woman.

Thank You! I really took a lot and enjoyed the recent video "Masters of Money," and readings on Marx!

16. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Her broad knowledge about the topic and her enthusiastic discussion/
Kathy is a very knowledgable person. She is critical of feminist issues and helped me to understand feminism better and stronger.
Dr. Ferguson is a master at explaining complex political and feminist theory. She is able to extract the core of the argument and provide tools for her students to think about an idea on a multidimensional level.
Kathy Ferguson really wants you to learn, she really wants you to think. She challenges you with some pretty hard texts in this course - they are so very worth wading through, and she helps you do that. She encourages student thoughts; classes are largely about student discussion. Kathy leads as necessary and there is a moment each class during which her explanation not only gave me a better understanding of the material, but she explained the author better than they did. It is not the most scholastic way to say it but this is the truth: literally every class period, I walked out of the room with my mind blown. I loved every minute of it. I would recommend Kathy again and again, and I hope to take classes from her in the very near future. She is the kind of person you want teaching you - teaching anyone.
She very effectively manages to take complex concepts and presents them in clear, easy to understand ways. She brings clarity out of chaos.
Kathy is a fantastic teacher, truly one of the best I've ever had. Not to mention an incredibly warm, friendly, and helpful person. She never made anyone feel less than if they didn't understand an idea or concept. She breaks everything down into something anyone can access.
Her ability to explain complicated things simply and with helpful examples.
17. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
I thought there were too many readings. Some readings were hard for me to digest. I thought it lacked depth in my understanding. Maybe, you could cut down some readings and focus more on certain ones so students have time to understand the subject matter better.
I'm sorry; I don't have any feedback for this question. I really found everything about Kathy very valuable and helpful and key to what a professor is supposed to be.
Everything was valuable.
No answer.
The only thing was having our final paper due during finals week, but Kathy listened and extended the due date on that.

21. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
She is very flexible and easy to work with. Also, she is practical and down to earth person.
I especially appreciated that Dr. Ferguson kept the weekly reading assignments to a manageable level. Rather than assign a 400 page book that the students would not be able to digest, she assigned some core readings and gave us the time to truly sift through these ideas. Moreover, every class was a winner. Her class discussion style was inviting and productive. I walked away each week thinking for hours about the ideas and theories presented. I was able to instantly see how to integrate these ideas into my own classes as well as my research.
The texts were varied and a good representation of what is out there in Feminist Theory. They are engaging, and challenging in all the right ways. Kathy is unafraid to point out where authors lack and she encourages students to find a text's silences and weak spots, just as much as it's strong suits. I enjoyed the focus on putting different texts together and watching their friction; I enjoyed seeing concepts come back around in a completely different book. One thing I especially loved is the good character that Kathy expects of her authors - and of her students. She shines light on where we can be humble (this is especially important for a grad student population to hear) - where we can be better feminists, be better humans, acknowledge where we have come from, who got us here, and how we are still evolving and learning.
This course was most valuable because of her ability to explain the theories presented in it.
Loved the readings, LOVED the option of doing several shorter papers.
I appreciated the challenging materials, the distribution of work, the ability to re-write essays if needed, as well as the options given for the final.

23. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
Maybe she could reconsider her choice of books; I think some students were not really enjoying reading some books.
My improvements are more tangential: I wish I had more time with the readings. I'm not sure that this can necessarily be improved though. There are a lot of them and they are very dense, and I would not have her shorten the reading list (and this is a grad level course so the level of the readings is appropriate). I mean only that, taking a full course load, while I was able to do the work well and to the best of my ability, I wish I had been able to give this course more attention. It's almost a course you'd want to take with maybe only one other class in order to properly engross yourself in the material.
I have no suggestions. It was very challenging, but in the most positive and productive ways.
I would like to maybe have seen some more readings/work that explores the intersection of feminist theory AND indigenous theory.
Have more roundabouts where everyone must give their reaction to the material to encourage more participation.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
She encouraged us to think critically and assigned readings that would broaden our knowledge of the course. She also did a good job of going over the readings and encouraging class discussion. Kathy tried to incorporate other aspects into the course to make it more interesting.
Professor Ferguson was extremely patient when it came to some confusion on the translation of some of the philosophies, but she as able to answer questions fully and to the best of her knowledge. If there was ever any doubt, she did research and would answer it the next class day. Professor Ferguson, honestly, was able to teach the subject matter so well that I'm sure it will stay with me for many years.
she was available for office hours
I find Mrs. Ferguson valuable and helpful in her teachings and how she tried to get all the students to interact and communicate in class and also by having group discussion on any of the readings.
Her lectures were excellent and she always answered students' questions fully.
Relation of theory to star trek
Enthusiasm
Incredibly knowledgeable about the subject.
I liked that she was available for help regrading our final paper
Kathy seemed to be very knowledgeable about the subject.
She always makes sure we understand what's going on. She also works well to have time for students to come by even though she's very busy.
-Interprets texts and relates them to current world scenarios -Challenges students to think about different concepts and apply theory in their own manner through the reading of the texts and connecting different media (i.e. Star Trek) to students -Clear expectations
very knowledgable in political theory
She is a great teacher who always has extra time to help students grasp the material during office hours. She has well organized lectures, which makes note taking very easy. Her TA (Chris) is also very helpful and professional. It seems that they both spend a good amount of time preparing for class. There are also many group assignments/discussion which I think are helpful.
Really helps (and enthusiastic) in creating a better understanding of the content taught to us (both in-class and in office-visits).
Theway she was able to have us read the actual text then explain the subject matter in a more easily understood manner.
She put the readings online.
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?

I could think of nothing negative to say about Mrs.Ferguson. While I have included complaints about the exclusion of People of Color below, I want to be clear that this is not an indictment of Mrs. Ferguson. She has never, at any time, made any racially or culturally insensitive statements. She appears to be an open minded and progressive individual. My complaints are about the curriculum not the teacher herself.

Maybe more technology could be utilized in the class, along with less emphasis on Star Trek and less time spent watching Star Trek. I would have liked to rather go over our papers together as a class, and more homework assignments other than just the readings.
Coming from a student who is deeply involved in the political arena, thank you so much, Professor Ferguson.
Great professor.
Kathy is a wonderful professor. My only regret was that I could not take one of her other classes this semester.
incredible class that challenged myself the entire semester. Prof. Ferguson is an incredible individual. I have absolutely no regrets on taking the class and would take another class with her teaching it!
The biggest problem with this course is the curriculum. The course title is "History of Political Thought." In actuality, this course is about the progression of the political thought of Western European men. The course content completely ignores people of color throughout history, and alienates present day people of color (the majority of the students enrolled). While learning about the philosophers included in the course is useful, it is stifling to have to focus on just the philosophies of W.Europe. In addition to this, the assigned readings are full of racism, xenophobia, and sexism. Many of the reading materials expressed ideas that were: pro colonialism/imperialism, pro white supremacy, etc. I think it is damaging to the psyches of the students to present the "History of Political Thought" in such a way. We are being taught to view are own ancestors and history from an outside (W.European) perspective. We are being taught to "otherize" ourselves and our ancestors. We are being forced to empathize with & understand the motivations and thought processes of W.European Ideologies which were used for centuries to oppress and destroy the civilizations and institutions of our ancestors. What you may not realize is that this is unnecessary. As people of color living in a European/Anglo-American dominated world, we learn from a young age to understand the motivations and needs of our historical and contemporary oppressors. If we did not learn these things we would not be able to survive. It would be more useful to teach the students to empathize with and understand the motivations and thought processes of peoples who are less represented (ignored) in the cannon of academia. There are many students of European descent who, more than likely, have always had an education which focused upon their own cultures/histories/ancestors. It would probably be beneficial to give these students a chance to see a different perspective. Either the course material needs to be broadened to included the voices of people of color, or the title of the course must be changed to "The History and Western European and Anglo American Political Thought." I learned a lot from the course but over all I felt alienated and agitated. UHM is such a diverse institution, it would be nice if the course content reflected that. We (the students) need to be taught about philosophies that include us and our ancestors as something more than just "slaves" or "the savages of America."

12. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
It's amazing how much I learned about women in the US military this semester. I was clueless as to how many women are sexually violated in the military but I was truly shocked to see such a horrible thing happen in a "respectable" institution.
I liked her insight on the topic of women and war. The TA was also helpful. More in class activities that require more conversation. A lot of reading in one semester. Overall enjoyed the class
The material was interesting and most times caught my attention.
I liked the fact that this class wasn't completely based on history, everything was very current and made me understand the military more.
I enjoyed getting an overview of all the roles women may play in a conflict situation/militarized society. I didn't know much about militarization before I took this course.
I loved the videos we would watch in class. They were way more informative than the other videos I'm used to in classes. The videos were great and really made me think about an aspect of life I hadn't quite thought about yet.
class discussions, and knowledge known by instructors on topics.
films
I like how we were encouraged to analyze certain issues from a standpoint that is not the norm. I also liked the connections that were made from the material we studied to current issues.
I really enjoyed the content Dr. Ferguson introduced through out the semester. I was glad that she waited until we had a solid foundation with militarism, globalism, and feminism before expecting us to discuss highly complex feminist theory at the end of the semester. As a woman who has had 3 years of combat experience, and 9 years of active duty service I found the course to be challenging and extremely current.
Being able to actually communicate with the other students and the professor
I enjoyed the videos we watched.
I liked the readings, discussions and films
How much more serious and mature this topic was. It was quite the eye opener
Class discussions
I actually like how different materials say both films and books are incorporated into the teaching of the course. Since the topic 'Women in Military' could be really hard to teach just with books and given that there were movies certainly helped aroused my interest in the subject as well as did not put me down just because of the gloomy part of the class/course content. I like how free-discussions are appreciated and I especially like the 'Boggle' game we played towards the end of the semester. That certainly stimulated our critical thinking and asked us to express ourselves on the topics/discussions.
The documentaries were very relevant. The readings tied directly to the projects we have due at the end of the course. Every piece of media we used was well thought out and picked with care.
I enjoyed the opinions of the other students. It brought up different outlooks to the different topics that came up in class.

14. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
I did all the journals on time and it seems unfair that students who have not done the journals still get awarded the same amount of points as someone who turned it in before Sunday at midnight. I felt like we covered too much information in such a short time, the readings were hard to keep up with. I didn't feel comfortable enough to talk in this class.
More structure Less out of class readings
Less reading, more individual writing, the group work that was presented to us as 1/2 the class grade may not be a good idea especially if attendance of the class is poor, it makes the other group members that attend class regularly stress out a lot. Also, the teacher should approach a conflicting matter in a civilized and professional way, instead of yelling and ragging on the class for not bringing the needed material, a friendly tone manner would be better.
This course can be improved by creating online quizzes for readings to replace the group project. Don't have the student's rely on the reading as a requirement for big projects if there is no guarantee that they are going to read it (hence the quizzes suggestion).
The war project is interesting, and I'm sure we all learned a lot, but I really don't enjoy group work, particularly when some members are more dedicated to the group than others. That is bound to happen in almost any group situation.
I didn't enjoy the group project.
I wish when she ask questions, she would specify and break down the questions more, stay on topic, and be organized with the class work.
Instead of assigning group projects, I feel that an individual paper might have been better. Maybe give the option to do either or?
I thought this class was great, but if I could It would have been better in a conference style room. Large table, everyone sits in a circle to facilitate a class discussion. I feel as though a few people never spoke a single word. I would have liked for more people to have contributed.
More class time
I think some assigned readings are too long to be completed from one class to the next. There were a couple books we were assigned to read within one week and I felt like that was not considerate of us as students who take 4-5 classes at a time. If those two books could be broken up a little more, that would be much less stressful.
The group project is good, but it is difficult to write a paper in a group since writing is usually an individual thing. Perhaps making it pairs instead with shorter presentations, or have each person write their own papers. Also, It may be easier to keep up with the weekly journal if the topic or question of the prompt was mentioned on the Monday or Wednesday before the Sunday they are due, even though the our reading are about the prompt. It would be helpful to know what to focus on.
randomly calling a single student to ask their opinion instead of the same people blurting out their thoughts
This course could be improved by doing more activities in class besides talking and reading.
Maybe the organization part in terms of when the Journals are posted and due and clarify more on change of schedule too.
Almost the entire grade is based on three huge assignments all due at the end of the course. It's a little overwhelming. The instructor should apply for the writing intensive credit, because the class already qualifies. We write a ton and they're open for evaluations and re-writes.
Visual aid would be helpful, powerpoints.
15. Other comments:
The final war project has been a rough one for me. I ended up doing most of the work. I understand that once out of college we need to work with others but half of my grade is relying on people who haven't been to class much and have not read ANY of the material. To me it seems unfair for students who attend class regularly and who do the readings. I don't want to risk receiving a bad grade on my paper because other students do not come to class. I don't think its fair at all, especially when only half of your group wants to meet. I dont think that 50% of the total grade should rely on a group project. I think 25% or even 30% is fair but NOT 50%.
I liked the class =)
Shouldn't do group projects especially in a class that doesn't have quizzes or test. No one is motivated to do anything and it leads to laziness throughout the semester. It is not fair for those who need an A to work with people who only need a passing grade. I don't think that big projects should be proposed so early in the semester because as students, we look at it as procrastinating time because there is too much time. Give students a limited amount of time to get this done (if the group project is continued) so they can scramble more and be more serious about it.
I don't think a group paper should be held to the same standard in regards to plagiarism as an individual paper. Yes, I agree that plagiarism should never be practiced. But realistically, many people aren't very much concerned about plagiarizing (or even about failing the course!). Most of them are not maliciously doing it, I'm sure. But they don't seem to think it's a big deal. So it is very difficult for those of us who do care. We end up taking on the burden of chasing after people to do stuff (and even when we try to tell them how to improve their contribution, they sometimes still don't care enough to do it), but ultimately we can't control what they do. Further, most of us do not have the luxury of spending so much of our time on one class. Again, I do not take plagiarism lightly, but repeatedly threatening to fail a 20-page paper is more effective at stressing out the more-conscientious students than the not-so-conscientious ones. And I'm sure you are trying to target the students who DO trivialize plagiarism. In short, we shouldn't all be suffering when in theory only one person could be plagiarizing. There should definitely be more leeway when grading a collaborative paper than an individual paper.
This class has opened my mind to issues that aren't discussed too often.
I will recommend this course to my peers.
I learned a lot from this class and the other readings. Also, could this be a writing intensive class in the future? Having a 20 page research paper, 5 page research paper, and weekly journals is pretty heavy stuff not to be considered writing intensive.
None.

5. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Everything. This class is awesome.
Great class. learned a lot about different political philosophers of different times.
The comparisons between philosophers and star trek
In depth conversations and lessons about the view points of different philosophers.
Critical application to various political theories
I feel the way Kathy approached the material through Star Trek was creative, unique and fun.
Professor Ferguson took very complicated reading material and was able to simplify it so I could comprehend what was going on.
The biggest aspect I appreciated was the interconnection the professor made amongst the theories we learned in class and our every day issues, mentalities and lives in general. I also loved that she stimulated our artistic/creative part of the brain as we connected such to political science by assigning us the writing of a Star Trek episode and a drawing explaining such famous theory as Hegel's Slave-Master dialectic. Also, her assistant added another perspective to the class which was valuable to help us in looking at things in other ways. He had a lot of knowledge in history, which helps understand where or how things are born.
Class discussions of the material to bring the material to life
I found that Ferguson's lectures were extremely informative and enlightening. There wasn't one class meeting where she didn't effectively communicate the theorist's ideas. Some lectures even inspired thoughts of a standing ovation (no joke). I can honestly say I took a lot away from this class. It was an excellent course.
The weekly quizzes were especially helpful in writing the 20 page essay. Also, the class is guided through the use of StarTrek to help explain some of the concepts of these political philosophers which helps understand their not so easy to read primary texts.
I really enjoyed how there was open conversation and discussion for every class. Kathy's style of teaching let us always speak up and she would be sure to comment but never in a negative way that would make a student feel bad about their response.
6. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
None.
The time the class was held.
The Star-Trek writing requirement. I feel that this limits the expression of the students ability to understand the material. I am unfamiliar with writing a screen play episode. This being a mandatory requirement restrains my ability to demonstrate my understanding of the subject matter.
Did not put much emphasis on conservative theorists such as Machiavelli, left out critical conservative philosophers such as Burke. Felt that too much emphasis was placed on liberal theory discussion
Having to sign in. I believe the students should be accountable to themselves for their learning; missing too much class will show in their work and participation. there were times when I came to class but forgot to sign in because the book skipped over me.
None
I cannot say anything was not valuable, for everything the professor said a great reason, ans she made sure she let us know the reasons.

This will probably be the class to ruin my gpa, but I'm okay with that. This is a great class: I learned a lot and it was fun. Kathy and Lorenzo are great instructors. The end.
Subject matter is interesting, provokes discussion among the class, but put less emphasis on critical theory and feminism. Engage conservative theories for better fairness and impartiality
I talk about this course all the time to my friends and if they were attending UH I think they'd be signed up for the next session.
One of the best political science professors I've ever had.
I am extremely happy I took this course, mainly because there were no sides taken when explaining a political theory. The professor and TA explained everything in a way that would allow us to think critically and by ourselves. Also, their energy kept the class very interesting, which can be hard to accomplish counting the fact that it is a 7:30 AM course. All I can say is that I feel very lucky I was able to learn from such passionate people.
More on Lorenzo as TA, he added other points of conversation that was a great supplement and point of view from Prof. Ferguson's point of view. They acted great together and played well off each other . Prof Ferguson was very enthusiastic in her teaching and great at explaining the material, even though it could be dry, and having a lively discussion.
Loved the course. The material presented has potential to be EXTREMELY boring. But what Ferguson did was turn "old" material into something each student can relate to. She kind of gave us a lens on how to interpret theorists' ideas. Just an excellent professor, and a great TA, too! Both were passionate about the material, which made me want to engage. I'm sure the class would agree.
Professor Ferguson is more than willing to help students with their writing at any time. She is very approachable and it is clear that she is very knowledgable in what she teaches. I would most definitely take another class from her if she taught one!
An overall wonderful course that I wish could be extended into two parts or two semesters so that we would have more time to go into further depth in the material.

Every aspect! Discussion were robust and meaningful, I learned so much. Course content was tough, but Kathy made all the difference and of course she was great at making everyone feel at ease, so most of us participated in the conversation.
All of the readings
Kathy's contribution to explaining the text and putting the arguments into context.
The breadth of the reading list and then the professor's subsequent breakdown and analysis of the readings during class. I really appreciated her willingness to actively work with texts. She was also willing to listen to students questions and then work from varying angles to find the best way to answer them.

20. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I found feminist theory interesting. I found the writing to be challenging but good.
Kathy! What an amazing professor and a great person ( I feel so lucky to have been one of her students), always so willing to help, listen to students' point of view and really took care of student interest. If a student didn't get a concept, she made sure that the student understood by extending the conversation--never rushed through course material--always well prepared with notes and totally happy to be in class. It was such a pleasure to attend class. Kathy is also extremely knowledgeable, but so down to earth, and this made her so approachable, and this is important for students.
the discussions on difference and equality, Emma Goldman book, Teddy Bear Patriarchy reading
Kathy's inclusion of material which I was unlikely to encounter in my discipline.
I'm totally biased with this answer. I recognize this. But - I really appreciated the inclusion of feminist interventions that are creative texts.

22. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
I suppose some weeks there seemed to be too much to read and discuss, and some weeks there seemed to be not so much - a slightly better balance could improve the discussions.
Having the readings available on Laulima at least two weeks before the schedule class discussion would have been very useful. In some cases, we ended up not discussing some of the texts at all, which might indicate that certain texts were more interesting than others and so should be allocated more discussion time. The presentation on the Roma was painful, especially having 9 pages read to us when I we all know how to read and have graduated from elementary school. If Kathy were to review the presentations beforehand, or at least be a little more aware of how the presenter intended on presenting the information, that might resolve the issue.
Over the course of the semester, Kathy mentioned quite a few texts she considered including in the course, but due to time constraints decided against it. I would really appreciate an "additional reading" list to accompany the syllabus, because I wrote the names/titles down every time she mentioned them, but my hearing and spelling is not always reliable, so sometimes I was not able to follow up on the reading.
23. Other comments:
I am so glad I took this course and will always look for other courses by Kathy that I can take as electives as I'm not from PoliSci or WS.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
This is wonderfully structured discussion course. Prof. Kathy Ferguson brings up a conversation topic and play a key role in the session, nothing more or less.
Not only were the readings valuable but the class discussions were very valuable as well!
This was a very interesting survey of a broad range of theory. It allowed folks who are curious or need to broaden there horizon and perspectives. Excellent!!
Superb and manageable selection of readings. Dr. Ferguson is very good at explaining complex theoretical concepts, while leaving plenty of room for class discussions and personal interpretations.
Writing the short essays. It was hard but it forced me to come to grips with the material in substantive ways.
The readings were very useful, both for my own research and in terms of providing ample material for considering how to do thing with postmodernism. The way Kathy mediated discussions was also a useful example of how to teach postmodernism.
Dr. Ferguson gives me an irreplaceable stimulus in critical areas of inquiry at times, which I value the most. Also, I like the course materials because it expands my thoughts.
I found the readings, overall, to be extremely valuable. There were a number of texts on the syllabus that I had been meaning to read, and I just didn't have the time. I also always value solid class discussion, because to me that's the entire reason to take classes. I am pretty good at reading things on my own and getting the main points, but in class environment I get to argue about those, I get to hear how other people relate this reading to other readings and current events, etc.
Professor Ferguson effectively managed the class allowing students the opportunity for critical thought and concepts yet she ensured that all objectives/concepts she wanted to cover were met.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
If possible, some kind of reaction paper every other week can be helpful for the student to share their opinion with instructor and other peers.
We may have spent a week too much on the art aspects...
I had a difficult time getting started with the final papers... but that was more my own fault - or lack of motivation.
Too much reading. The material is so dense. I felt I had to ignore some readings in order to focus on understanding the ones I selected.
Perhaps too much time was spent on Manet and discussion repeating what the readings already pointed out.
After much contemplation, I decided to write what I think because I hope there is a space for improvement for the best interest of all the students, not just a few. First, I wish there was no teaching assistant (TA) in this class. A lot of precious time was taken by this TA. I would prefer to hear more words from Dr. Ferguson than from this TA who talks endlessly. It was pain that I had to hear her explanation from her narrow worldview to that extent in this kind of course. Honestly, I was kind of annoyed of her frequent interruption while even Dr. Ferguson was speaking. At least when Dr. Ferguson was talking, I wanted to hear Dr. Ferguson complete her thoughts without interruption. With that kind of interruption that is followed with her endless wordy talk, my thoughts that were wandering with Dr. Ferguson's simple yet deep words was abruptly stopped and it never come backâ?¦â?¦only empty feeling remains. I would rather like to have a moment of silence than long words by a TA. Often, what triggers peopleâ??s thoughts to launch into a deeper arena of thinking are the very simple yet carefully crafted words voiced by critical thinker like Dr. Ferguson. Dr. Ferguson indeed has this unique ability to throw a simple word that makes people think, and that ability should not be interrupted by a TA. Most students take the course because of this particular professor with this specific talent, and not for the TA. The TA is free to talk endlessly with Dr. Ferguson out of the class, but other studentsâ?? time in class should be a bit more respected.
I found that the launches were sometimes really difficult to listen to. A number of people in the class seemed to completely disregard the instructions in a bad way. Rather than picking a few interesting points and raising some questions, we were forced to sit there and listen to someone try to summarize the entire piece. I don't need a summary of something I've just read. So I kind of wish that when someone's launch was getting completely out of control that Kathy would step in.
My personal preference would have been to spend more time with the Bennett text.

It is not enough for me to understand deeply this arena of study because every subject for each week has profound root on its own. If possible, I want to take another advanced class to this POLS610. Thank you, professor!
It was a great course, which I very much enjoyed!
A critique of postmodernism would have been refreshing, but perhaps outside the objectives of the course. I think many of the other students got the impression that postmodernism was all there is and provides an explanation for everything. If anything, they should have cultivated an unwillingness to drop anchor and remain static with any theory. That was certainly my take- way. That said, this was one of the best classes of my graduate experience.
Overall, Dr. Ferguson is a great teacher, and I like what she offers in the class.

12. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Learning about different countries and how militaries have an affect on them.
The videos that we watch i felt were more informational. learned a lot.
I actually liked the videos she showed us in class. Its one thing to read about the stories of women or people in general its another to actually be able to see the things you're reading. Its easier & more intense to grasp.
I really like the online discussion forum, it is fun and i learned many things from it.
I loved the entire course! I think Kathy is an amazing teacher! She was always to take time out of her busy schedule to help me understand the material better. I found the material interesting (I even got my husband to read some of it). I loved how it helped you see the bigger picture, how things may not always be what you see, you have to look beneath the surface.
I liked the different view of the military.
The videos were great, very informative.
The discussion and the implimentation of videos.
Discussions were crucial to this course and it was always enjoyable to hear what others had to say or to have to actually think about things we wouldn't normally consider because t wasn't brought to our attention...a lot of reading between the lines.
I really enjoyed her lectures in class. It was more of discussions than straight lectures, which helped me learn the material more.
Prof Fergusonʻs lectures are very well organized and the different projects she makes us do are extremely relevant to the course material she teaches.
Gender and militarism. I think it was interesting to know and be aware of these things, since I never or had no idea that militarism and gender intersect in so many ways.
I learned a lot about the military and women that I did not know before.
I enjoyed the fact that there were no quiz's or tests so the reading assigned (while there was a lot of it) felt more like pleasure reading, instead of being so worried about absorbing and memorizing facts. I also liked the way in which the class lectures were delivered. I got A LOT out of this class, so thank you!
everyting
I loved the material, it was very interesting.
I liked that everything was layed out from the beginning, here is what you have to do, here is when its due by, turn it in anytime before then. It made things very straight forward and easy. While I dispise group projects and presentations I enjoyed the final project as it made us really learn about a war. I also loved the readings and all the books we had to read.
The topics we covered this semester was interesting, I learned a lot.
I really enjoyed the sections about the military, and how it affects and is a part of everyday life.

14. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
Not assigning so much readings at a time.
There needs to be less reading....it is truely impossible to read that many pages within a certain amount of time as well as the other classes that we have. The discussion board needs to be in order. the weeks are all out of place. Need a general idea as to where we stand in the class
More time in class to work on group projects. Less reading articles & more videos.
It is good to have more film about the experience of being a female soldier in the military.
Less readings or not as many pages, we have other classes.
Have final project be groups of two, spread out peace and war project so we can have a better survey of what we are learning as the year progresses.
The books, alothough contain a lot of great information, were too much there was a lot of reading as it was and then the literature was not as easy to follow either, which made it that much harder to focus or even want t read anf then we had 4 books! With the exception of The Lonely Soldier, the others contained way too much info and could have been put into simpler writing? On top of that we had 20 page articles that were just the same. This greatly affected our discussions as most did not read the articles or just didn't care to participate.
Just grading wise, I wish it was posted so I would know where I stand in class.
Maybe less focus on group work, although I do understand her outlook and agree that through group work, you strengthen other skills. But at the same time, we should have more individual assignments. Also, reminder emails to do the laulima posts would be appreciated and might also encourage participation.
There was a lot of reading (sometimes 200 pages a night) and it was impossible to do all the readings completely every night because of work from other classes as well. It would be better if she took that into consideration when assigning the readings.
I am not the biggest fan of group projects. Although I do believe they serve a purpose and help learn how to work with others, having it be 50% of our final grade is sort of frustrating. Especially since group projects are NEVER divided and completed evenly among group members. to improve this situation, perhaps there could still be a group project/presentation, but everyone does their own individual paper, instead of a collective paper.
i feel the course was great and nothing needed to be improved
There was often a lot of reading, sometimes too much I thought. Also, I must say it made it difficult to come to class knowing there was no tests. Journals were so hard to remember, I know we are uperdivision students, but some kind of reminder would be good or have us turn them in by hand in class.
the readings were a bit long and hard to understand. it took too long to unpack it in class, it may be better to condense the readings to just one or two per class session or even weekly. there was so much content it was hard to keep track of the readings.
There could be more opportunities for film viewings. Also, we really didn't need to print out all the articles, etc.
15. Other comments:
I would have like to have heard some positives about women and military.
I think that it is easier to have more time in class or at least some time in class to be able to talk to the group about their projects because everyone has a busy schedule and its quite hard to meet up with everyone because some people don't answer emails or they don't have phones. So I think it would be more helpful to the students to have sometime in class to work on it.
Over all I enjoyed the course, although it frustrated me at times (the reading haha). I would work on trying to get better discussions. Thanks!
Excellent teacher, knows her material and is passionate about what she teaches. I would take another class from her.
Great professor, would definitely take another class from her and will definitely recommend her to others! :)))))

LOVED the class and Kathy. She is a great teacher and guide in the Womens Studies department and knows so much about this topic.
Kathy Ferguson is an excellent professor overall, and her class is definitely worth taking for those who are interested in how the military presence affects everyone.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The most valuable aspect of this course was the wisdom I could gain through studying these great political philosophers. However, it would have been impossible for me to even understand the surface of what they're trying to convey without Professor Ferguson who did a step-by-step analysis about the concepts in each reading. Professor Ferguson completely understood the material and she was able to explain it to me in a way I could understand.
Dr. Ferguson is so clear and concise! She is always available to help especially through email and she responds in a timely manner. She is clear in what she wants and expects from the assignments, and she encourages everyone to be active participants in class. She is funny and friendly, and just so refreshing especially in the early morning.
The mini projects were very helpful and so was the packet she put together for decoding Hegel. Without that packet I would have been totally lost.
This class was really, really challenging but rewarding if you put in the time.
Learned a lot of about classical philosophy.
Letting us watch Star Trek in class help understand the material better.
The connection of concepts to Star Trek, helped learn and see examples of the philosophies.
lectures on the readings.going through it piece by piece helped to understand the information
The readings and the episodes of Star Trek helped me better understand the concept, also Ferguson lectures are the best.
Basic knowledge of philosophical thinkers.
Class discussion and reading out loud the readings were very helpful in understanding what the philosopher was trying to say and how that relates to us today. Professor Ferguson is a vital and valuable part of this class because she brings understanding to the readings through both her explanations and the Star Trek episodes that is used.
Professor Ferguson did a fantastic job of relating political theory to current events and made it so much more interesting.
Star Trek
Learning so much about philosophers and how it was applied in Star Trek episodes. We even had to make up a story of our own related to the Star Trek universe. Coming from a person not interested in Star Trek at all, I feel that this class made me understand how the episodes cleverly adapted political philosophy in what I always believed was just mindless sci-fi. The professor knew exactly what to say about each philosopher and admits that she reads all of the publishings of the philosophers numerous times in order to understand it so that we, as students may understand as well. The discussions on Laulima we were required to do did help a lot to motivate us to cite the text and put it into context according to the professor's question.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
The least valuable aspects of the course were...n/a.
I didn't like the discussion board questions so much. I think that they were good, but they only allowed you to answer in one way. I think allowing some leeway with the answers, maybe letting us do a drawing to represent something or writing a story etc. might be more helpful to enhancing my understanding and engaging all types of learning styles.
Star Trek episodes.... they had their purposes, but it was just a little dull for me :/ I see how it connected with the course content though.
The reading. Too much reading.
What was expected of us in our writings of the final paper was not made clear before the deadline. A rubric should be provided so students know what to do and know what is expected of us more clearly.
hard for class discusion with 30 people in one room
The discussion boards on Laulima.
I can't really say, but if anything, I think the Laulima postings were the least valuable for me personally because I feel I got more out of the class. However, I understand that the Laulima postings were to help us articulate what we just read, which is a good thing.
Sometimes we would get carried away in discussion and would run out of time to discuss all of the things we wanted to.
None, really.

Professor Ferguson's motivation to teach us and her positive attitude towards us learning the material really helped me grasp the material. This was a really fun course, even though it was required. Prof. Ferguson made this course really interesting and gave me a good understanding of many political philosophers. This was one of my favorite classes this semester.
The reading is too hard. Reading should be easy like Samual P. Huntington's Clash of Civilization.
Right On!
This course helped me see the world differently, and understand these philosophers that shaped our government.
I think the Star Trek element of the class very much helped in the understanding of the subject material. It also made the class a lot more fun. I've taken Political Science classes before that focus of theorists and they were dry, dull, and made me want to sleep in class. The different take definitely spruces it up.
Great course and the perfect teacher to teach it. I am very glad I was able to take it before I graduated. A great and creative way to understanding classical political theory through Star Trek...great medium and an even greater teacher who is thoughtful, knowledge, and absolutely approachable to articulate the readings clearly and relevantly. Professor Ferguson is also very sensitive to the needs of the students. She explains to all of us in the beginning of the year how she works with kids with dyslexia and makes it known that she doesn't want any of us to feel pressured to read out loud in class. She is very approachable and a really friendly professor.
Kathy Ferguson is wonderful! She cares about the students, subject matter, and is very thoughful and educated.
GREAT CLASS! Will recommend it to all of my fellow political science majors!
This should have been a WI course. This class would've been more fair if not only students who took the Honors POLS 110 got to learn about philosophers before-hand and not the regular POLS 110 takers. Great discussions took place within this class.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
It was well-balanced (not skewed toward a particular view of the theory) and the readings were well connected to eachother.
The reading material and discussions were both equally valuable to me.
I found the class discussions most valuable. Professor Ferguson did an excellent job raising questions. She would always begin with an overview of the issues and conducted classes effectively by helping students focus on important topics. Professor Ferguson was very good at explaining difficult concepts using relevant examples. I think Professor Ferguson is one of the best professors I have worked with as a graduate student. I really like the way she engaged students in class discussions. Reading selections were excellent too.
Theory courses can often become confusing if the course is not well planned and the instructor does not have a firm understanding of the material. Thankfully this class was both well planned and managed. The instructor was able to guide the students rather than control them which made learning fun and productive.
The required course reading was presented in such a way as to make the topic of Feminist Theory highly approachable, the concepts clearly defined and very challenging. Typically, most course requirements established by instructors do not encourage or disallow the course material being used for a term paper. This seems counterintuitiveâ?¦ especially in a seminar setting where the readings are being critically examined and discussed from multiple points of view. I believe utilizing class readings in this way helps to form a solid foundation in the process of learning.

The course covered such a broad range of material and I only wish I had more time to pursue each topic even more deeply. I am so thankful to have been given the opportunity to be in one of Kathy's classes! She is truly an inspiring thinker and person.
Top quality teaching by a great professor!!! WS 615 was an intellectually stimulating course -- definitely one of the best courses that I have taken at UHM. I would love to take another course from Professor Ferguson.
Great job to all around.
This seminar was one of the best that I have attended at UH Manoa. Professor Ferguson exemplifies all the positive qualities of a professor and teacher. She is passionate about teaching and highly knowledgeable in her field of study.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The mere fact that this course is =offered is of great value to me! But on a more serious note, I think the reading choices were great and really reinforced the course themes as as well as challenged me to higher thinking and alternate perspectives.
the course in its entirety was effective, especially for myself who had no knowledge on the aspects of anarchism. I felt that many of my questions were answered through this course and I could not have asked for a better group of students to have taken the class with. Kathy's personality is what makes grad courses so enjoyable to take!

It covers a path-breaking issue on politics: anarchism.
Dr. Ferguson's relaxed in-class style coupled with her astute and erudite perspective made for an extraordinarily vibrant and stimulating class environment. Her passion for the material was evident from the very start, and her enthusiasm for the content certainly bubbled over into the rest of the class making for an extremely successful, and intellectually fruitful, seminar.

12. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Most of the videos were really touching or really reached to me in ways just the reading couldn't. The novel we had to read too.
I loved the whole course. We got to touch on so many issues and aspects of women in the military. It was also great that the course intertwined with current events.
All aspects of this course were very informative. Some of the course material however set me on fire but this was understandable as it was explained in the beginning of class that just about everything we covered was controversial. I found that this class thoroughly engaged me and forced me to think in ways I had not necessarily thought before.
I love this class!!! It surely a better perspective, an unbias perspective, on the presence of the military and how militarization affects everyone's life, not just those in the military and the institution itself. TERRIFIC CLASS!
I liked the global span of the course, as well as how many areas we were able to cover--how many aspects of militarization and women there were and how each affected the other--these connections were great to see. The group project was actually interesting and involved me into the class more.
opportunites to think outside the box.
I enjoyed learning about the different wars and what is actually going on in our world today.
I enjoyed when Kathy broke us up in groups and the books she used were amazing! Very informative! I also loved the movies we watched, it really opened my eyes to a lot!!
The project and learning about other countries wars.
I loved the range of subjects and topics we covered. Enloe's book was so amazing; I'm going to keep it after this class is over just to have handy. The subject matter was fascinating and continually relevant. It inspired just enough rage mixed with the perfect amount of hope. Thank you so much for this course.
This course covered a wide variety of subjects, but also managed to stick to the theme of women in the military. Professor Ferguson is a fun and intelligent woman who really makes the material relateable and interesting.
great reading materials
I liked how our class always had open discussions and she created an environment where we wouldn't be afraid to speak our mind even if we had opposing opinions.
I liked that this professor was very knowledgeable on the subject and communicated with the students effectively. I felt that I really learned a lot!
Kathy is a great professor and really knows the content. I learned a great deal throughout the course.

14. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
Schedule is kind of hectic trying to fit everything
No imporovements. =]
The class in general I thought was excellent. From the perspective of a student who is not majoring in or obtaining a certificate in womens studies, I think the work load (readings) was incredibly overwhelming. Good, bad, I don't know but I found myself dedicating more time to this class than to the classes that were part of my major.
I guess more days for the war team presentation so we don't have to rush and have more time to present important issues. Maybe 2 teams per day? I think that would be good.
Although it is a general course, I do wish that we could go more in depth for some subject matter, since we could only cover the surface of much of the material. I just wish that we had more time for discussion because there wasn't as much time as I'd have liked. I liked all of the videos though, it was just that by the time the video ended we had to wait to discuss it until next time.
Longer class periods, and less online discussions.
This course was good, I enjoyed the instructor
I think that if it were at a descent time instead of 7:30 in the morning would make this class better.
Fix Gartley Hall so this class doesn't have to be taught at 7:30 in the morning! Also, a more doable suggestion: This course would benefit greatly from a reader. I do most of my reading on the bus or around campus, and I don't have any portable internet, so it was difficult to get the online readings done. When I could read them, it was a hassle to print them for class. Plus a reader would allow me to keep those interesting articles for future use. Also, while I understand the reasons behind the group project, I still wasn't a fan. Oh well. Everything else in the course was perfect, so I'm happy.
The course could be a little better organized in terms of assignments, but it is excellent otherwise.
Less reading please. The amount of reading did not provide me with enough time to fully absorb the text I was reading, and most of time ended up skimming the assigned texts.
This course should definitely be offered as a WI course. I understand that Prof. Ferguson is not to blame, but rather the blame is on the budget cuts!
I have a hard time really pin pointing how the course could be improved except the time. Class started at 7:30 am and it is just too early to be tackling such complicated and disturbing concepts.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I think the straightforward structure of the course, with the simple reading-and-then-lecture format, was very effective. Watching Star Trek and recognizing the themes was interesting and a good supplement.
Not only did Professor Ferguson display significant knowledge of the information, it was obvious that she truly enjoys teaching it! It's so refreshing to have a professor who loves to teach and enjoys encouraging her students.
Lectures and readings
Learning about each political philosopher and finding traits that distinguish that person, helped me separate all of them.
I really enjoyed her style of teaching. I feel like the group participation approaches were very effective in helping us understand concepts.
Reading material. This textbook is my new Bible!
I value how Prof. Ferguson took a seemingly unrelated topic such as a popular tv show and used it to teach Political Theory from ancient greece to contemporary times.
Everything. It taught a lot about the major philosophers that impact our lives and it taught us ways that it is still present in events today, even though the philosophers aren't from our time period.
Using Star Trek as a vehicle for explanation.
Connecting the philosophers to our culture and society. Being a survey course, although the information is somewhat limited there is a good overview of the material.
relating traditional political values to present issues and using star trek to more easily understand them.
She knew everything about every philosopher that ever lived. I enjoy knowing I can come to her for questions.
Professor Ferguson's ability to convey complex ideas in a straightforward, open minded way.
How the instructor managed to fuse Star Trek and political philosophy together to provide a unique approach to teaching.
Her lecture.
Learning about political theorist and their ideologies
This class is hard. I think it was a huge battle between my intellectual half and slacker/procrastinator true self to accomplish the academic work required for this. Professor Ferguson can break the most complex, hard to digest reading material down to small manageable pieces. I think the acceptance that there are ideas that are just way to complicated for me to grasp is a valuable humble me moment that I thank you Professor for guiding me through.
Class discussion was amazing!!
The quizes were very helpful in reaffirming what we discussed in class and help to clarify ideas that were not so clear.
Class discussions and professers lectures made the difficult reading easier to grasp
It was very challenging and lots of intensive work.
The lecture is very effective at breaking down difficult material, so the students can understand.
The philosophers chosen.
Everything, the teacher is absolutely great and I learned SO MUCH from her lectures, papers, and everything.
Star trek
Watching the Star Trek episodes. It really helped bridge the gap between classroom and field by being able to see the political philosophies articulated verbally by people, and not just read by us in a text. This also made me value and think about television and movies as more than just entertainment. It made me look at media I would normally view as just entertainment in a more critical way.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Nothing much.
online quizzes
The amount of reading was extensive
The quizes.
End of semester in-class group work (acting out Hegel and Marx); would be cooler if all students were engaged, but the people I was grouped with were disinterested.
There wasnt a whole lot that I didnt value.
Nothing.
The size of the class was too large, people felt uncomfortable during discussions.
I can't really come up with any parts that didn't have value. Kathy has this class down pat and knows how to use all of her time wisely. I felt like if I missed any class time I would have missed a great deal of information. I suppose the least value would be the quizzes, as they aren't any real indication of learning. However they were a useful tool in order to understand the main ideas of each philosopher.
Sometimes I was so lost that I am sure she thought I didnt care. The concepts were hard to grasp if it is not your major or if all you took was a 100 level political science prior to this course. With the amount of writing, I wish it came with a WI.
Although I want to be a poli sci major, I want to go more into international relations. While I do understand why philosophical discussions on things like power and justice are relevant, I do not understand why this course goes over how words are simple metaphors and all that. There were some philosophers covered, that I did not find useful at all.
The quizes didn't help much.
Nothing.
Probably the artistic representation of Hegel's master/slave relationship. This was one of the hardest assignments I have ever had. I do not even know if it made sense what I gave you BUT I do understand and can now identify examples of this relationship. I just don't know if I can render this artistically. Keep the project though, it just really hurt my head.
n/a
I really hated the assignment of making a visual representation of Hegel's master/slave relationship. I know some people understand better with visual props, but to me it was a first grade assignment and embarressed me because I am awful at art! Perhaps provide alternative options rather than anything art related... powerpoint, or poem for example
for having such much writing assignments it should have been a writing intensive class
Nothing, everything was valuable!
I believe they were all valuable. I would hesitate to change anything, except maybe to lessen the length of the final paper.

Very interesting class. Use of something as unusual as Star Trek Helped to really stick concepts in my memory.
This was an excellent course with an even better professor. I don't think most of the material would've been understood as well as it was if a different professor was teaching it.
The Star Trek incorporated into the class is sheer genius! Definitely helped put things into perspective, and was a welcome break from the sometimes dry/esoteric reading material.
She was very funny in class, making them interesting and gave me motive to come.
Class can be boring and the amount of student ratio was too big. Discussions were hard if you were even slightly shy. She was an understanding teacher but certainly needed to make the course size smaller.
She is a great teacher.
While I enjoyed the Star Trek aspect of the course, I felt that the final papers were too long, at least part 2. I had a hard time writing eight pages of analysis of an eight page story. Perhaps make it 4- 6 pages
Thanks for everything. This class really left me with a lot to think about. I really enjoyed it.
Kathy is AWESOME, she is one of the best professors that I have ever had at UH!!!! one of the BEST!!!
i enjoyed writing the star trek paper. Even though it required a lot of time and effort, it was fun having a political science class that nurtured creativity out of it's students. It was one of the few classes where I felt I could fully express myself.
Political theory is difficult, and I understand the professors want to expose us to as many theorists as possible, but rapid pace makes it somewhat difficult to really gain an understanding of all the theories!
I wish that I was able to get the WI for this course.
She is probably the most intelligent teacher that I have ever met. I would recommend her to anyone.
This class felt like it could qualify as a Writing Intensive with the length of papers that needed to be written, maybe it should be one? The quizzes were very helpful in understanding the different philosophies. They greatly encouraged, and often times required, that you carefully read the text. And the 2nd classroom we were in at the start was horrible, it only lasted 2 weeks though.

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Discussion of the readings and the environment in which we can freely talk is valuable. I like that the class was centered on critical thinking and discussing of what we read and that the lecture is weaved into discussion, not just lecturing and briefly talking about the reading. We learn by application and figuring it out ourselves.
Learning the discourses of crucial parts of history I didn't have the chance to learn. Questioning things that I wasn't aware of. Realizing the importance of these kinds of studies and goals trying to be acheived.
the discussions in class were good because it helped to understand the material.
Great course, instructor was awsome :)
The readings were diverse and extremely informative but it was Professor Ferguson's own discussion and clarification that made it both interesting and understandable.
The discussions in class about homework really opened my eyes to a lot of different issues that I have never thought about before. Kathy Ferguson demonstrated superb knowledge of the course material and themes of the course. I think the best part of the course was the teacher. She is amazing!
Discussion, museum assignments
She allowed us to speak our mind and provided an environment that made us feel safe and I felt like there was no wrong answer to most things.
The readings were great -- they were extremely thought-provoking and very applicable to the course themes. I also got a lot out of the museum project because I am a hands-on learner, so getting out in to the community was very productive. It was nice to put our learning to action. Further, I liked the dynamics of the classroom setting. What I liked about the dynamics was that you were an assertive leader but it wasn't like you were lecturing to us, we were always able to participate and discuss our own ideas. In fact, you encouraged this, and your manner and attitude gave the classroom a level of intellectual safety which made me feel comfortable participating and asking questions. Also, you have a very clear and comprehensive way of explaining ideas and concepts -- your ability to effectively articulate things made the class that much better and more resourceful.
The readings that were assigned in this course we extremely eye opening and taught me so many new things. I really enjoyed most of the readings that professor Ferguson selected.
She took her teaching to a greater extent than she needed to. All of her assignments were interesting and the required readings were terrific. This course wouldnt have been as effective if taught by another professor. She really understood effective ways to teach the course and help me gain a greater understanding to the feminist world. One primary aspect that was the most valuable was her discussions. Although I did not engage much in conversation just listening to her thoughts, opinions and experiences were enough.
9. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
None.
nothing, just about everything was valuable.
I'm not really sure the relevance of the museum project. it seememd a bit out of place with the rest of the coursework
NOTHING. This is the best class I've taken at UH Manoa. This class and what Kathy has taught me has really changed my life and outlook on things.
The readers were unnecessary because she lectured anyways.
I hate to say it, but I didn't get much out of the bios. Doing mine was awesome for me because I got to talk to Noenoe in person and learn more about her through her herself. I had read a book of hers and was intrigued by her ideas, but I had never met her -- so I'm grateful that the bio was an opportunity to do so. But as far as listening to other people's presentations, I didn't always retain the information, nor did I think that the information that was provided was always useful in helping me put the reading/subject matter into context, or even better understand it. I guess it depended on who was the presenter.

20. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Discussion on the daily readings and how it fits into the "big picture" in terms of relating to other people, places, things, etc.
Class time. the Museum project. The videos.
I liked the museum project a lot, because it was fun and interesting. It was very different.
I thought class discussions were very informative and enjoyable. Easy to grasp the text while discussing in class. Also challenged us and pushed us to do our best!
How snowball paper worked.
the videos were fascinating.
THE TEACHER and her awesome insight.
Discussion was often insightful and enjoyable. Dr. Ferguson is a brilliant theoretician, but she is also an excellent teacher.
I enjoyed the light workload and intense discussions.
I pretty much answered this question in the "most valuable" question, but I liked the politics of the classroom and I loved the materials that were assigned to bring light to the issues and topics of the course (i.e. the books and videos that we read and watched).
I think this course was so great for me because Professor Ferguson was so knowledgeable in this field. I also liked that we were learning extremely complicated ideas, but professor Ferguson was able to break them down for us so that we could understand them.
I liked the in class discussions the most. Not only did Kathy create a great environment for a student to learn, she enabled students to understand the world in a whole different light.

Possibly more videos to make it more entertaining.
I think there were too many readings required for each class because not only does it take longer to read but we didn't even get to finish one topic before we had to start a new one. It went too fast, so I think there should be less reading.
maybe if it was scheduled for a later time.
Make it a writing intesive course. I know it's hard because everyone needs a class like this for their degree, so maybe provide more classes like this.
The class would have been better if the table was big enough for everyone to sit around, or if we just set chairs up in a circle. It felt really disconnected with a large table that encircle some, and left others out.

great and interesting class. really enjoyed it.
I really liked the biographies she made us do because it is like seeing what we, youthful students can become and the inspirations it took to get us there. I love how the class is open-spaced and Kathy is truly a great teacher.
This was a very challenging and informative class.
I learned a lot in this class. I would certainly take a higher, graduate level seminar class with Dr. Ferguson in the future if possible. I think she is an excellent teacher.
I believe Kathy Ferguson is a great educator and the best professor i've had at UH Manoa. She inspires me to become more active in the community.
I had a blast in this class and really got a lot out of it. Thanks for a great semester
I have been at UH for three years and Professor Ferguson was by far the best professor I have ever had. I learned so much from her in this one semester! I would definitely recommend this class to someone or any class she teaches. I wish all of my professors at UH had the passion for teaching she does and her knowledge.

8. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
For me the most valuable aspect was the introduction to many differnet writers and thinkers.
I appreciate the thoughtful selection of reading material, the class discussions, the visual presentations and I think the most important aspect, the excellent professor.
The films that we were able to watch.
I have only dabbled lightly into feminist theory, and I'm glad to have taken this class because Kathy was simply magnificent. I really enjoyed the readings that Kathy picked to include in the course because they all offered different perspectives towards feminist theory. I'm glad Kathy included Judith Butler within the course because I feel that she is important to political theory in general. Kathy's own personal work was very helpful with the course, and I was really appreciativer to know her ideas and own theories.
Wide range of texts and clear identification of themes and central questions that we explored for the semester... it was great to be challenged so profoundly and still guided in this way. I found the course material to be just difficult enough to make me feel like I was walking on my own edge, but as if I also would be able to ask questions about material I didn't understand or arguments with which I didn't agree without feeling intimidated. THAT is a sign of good teaching:)
The course readings and class discussions were extremely valuable.
The materials are effectively prepared to synthesize my thoughts. I truly enjoy all of the readings. In fact, I am planning to re-read some of them this summer with more time (no need to worry about the deadline or anything like that) to reflect and think more. It was such a pleasure to encounter these books. For me, encountering the never-heard/thought of is the sole purpose of keep learning.
kathy's discussion of the theoretical material was very helpful; the imagery, anecdotes, background, etc, all helped to unpack some very complicated concepts
Understanding the construction of masculine and feminine from different spheres... i.e. Western sphere and Eastern/Oriental Sphere.
Class assignments and discussions.
Most of the readings were the most valuable - Wendy Browns' Essay and Theorizing Feminism specifically.
The range of subject-material provided a very useful foundation to build on.
Readings on civilization/nature constructs, Ranciere, Cohn article and cosmic feminism were all new to me!
I think the choice of texts, and the order of them as well, was fantastic. It was a great introduction and development, plus the coverage of how feminism interacts with other social movements/ideas was great for providing breadth.
class discussion and individual presentations.
9. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I don't like the physical arrangement of the classroom. There does not aapear to be enough room for all the students at the conference table. However, this is not specific to the course Kathy is teaching. It seems though to marginalize students on the periphery of the classroom, and inhibit participation.
I felt like I wasn't getting enough political theory within the course because it was also shared with a women's studies course which brought in different perspectives. While there diversity in the classroom was enlightening, there were times where I felt that some of the things we should've been discussing were being over-looked, for instance, I was interested in spending more time in Butler and psychoanalysis.
None.
Basically, I believe there is nothing that is not valuable in life.
i would have liked to have a broader range of feminist theorists not based in the united states or the west; i think the discussion may have benefited from a different balance of voices that turn each other upside down and create the friction in our discussions which we talked about in some of our readings
None. All the aspects of the course were valuable and of great help to me!
Other readings - Journals on Queer Theory and some class discussions.
I did an undergrad certificate in WS and found I'd read and worked with much of the material we covered, whereas many of our classmates were working with it for the first time. This was a great review and an opportunity to work on making my understanding and arguments more sophisticated. I expected this class to introduce me to new and different materials as I didn't realize most of the other students wouldn't have a background in WS/feminist theory. Given that, I really enjoyed our class discussions and having classmates present, especially since we were all from different backgrounds and were able to share those perspectives in our presentations.
While it may (emphasis on may) help students professionally, the student presentations are the worst part of this class. I understand that people have different approaches, but if the goal is to help students prepare to present, some of the presentations are awful and don't really count as presentations. There has been no professorial feedback about how to improve them so the goal is sorely missed. And while the expectations were clear about what we were to present on, some students went sorely off the mark - and were allowed to do so a 2nd time. Additionally, they tend to take up so much time that takes away from much more fruitful discussions. I feel this aspect of the class needs MUCH revision.
too much reading.

20. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Its theoretical orientation
I appreciate Kathy's respectful approach to students. She is an excellent listener in her attentiveness to student responses. She provides learning opportunities for the students with an affirmative, positive approach that encourages, rather than inhibits student communication and participation. Instead of a pendantic, paternalistic professorial voice, her manner, her speech, and knowledgeable insights, create an inclusive learning atmosphere. Kathy provides a learning environment within which an engaged student has the opportunity to reflect individually and collectively about assigned readings, visual presentations, and facilitated class discussions in a way that encourages edification in a bottom-up process. I also think she is a generous person, who acknowledges student concerns, irrespective of how significant those concerns may appear.
The Professor is awesome. She is caring and helpful.
I liked how Kathy included a diverse amount of reading. Kathy had stated in class at one point that in order to understand what the author is trying to say, we must first read where they are coming from, thus the different authors.
Discussions of theoretical material...
I really respect the fact that Dr. Ferguson treat the student with respect. I also velue the way Dr. Ferguson taking time to explaine things. I appreciate her occasional use of active silence and the way she moves the class on.
i liked most aspects of the class, although a bit more discussion in small groups would have allowed more people to speak who didn't feel like talking in the larger group as a whole. i know that most everyone probably had something to say but there were many folks in the class i didn't hear from the whole semester because most of the discussion took place within the large group space. a couple times break out groups would be helpful i think
The fact that everyone gets to present two readings in the class. This helps everyone focus on every reading, and realize that they may have different interpretation of the text as compared as to the one presenting it in the class. I find this challenging and at the same time enlightening!
I enjoyed some of the class readings and discussions. I also enjoyed the movies.
Kathy's ability to articulate difficult concepts was very helpful.
Probably what I found most valuable: I think the choice of texts, and the order of them as well, was fantastic. It was a great introduction and development, plus the coverage of how feminism interacts with other social movements/ideas was great for providing breadth. Additionally, the choice to write either a research paper or smaller, response papers that allowed for a discussion of multiple texts, was very nice.

22. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
Due to some funny, yet course relevant anecdotes by students, and at times by the professor, time seems to slip away too quickly. Perhaps more firmness on allotted time for class presentations would be helpful.
More Theory! Maybe Foucault's History of Sexuality as a required reading!
I would love to take the class again if it were offered in a political science focus only.
Perhaps more attention could be paid to more current feminist theorizing, beyond Judith Butler. I think it would be more useful if some of the older readings were supplied as background, but more time was spent on feminist theory that locates itself in political theory. I love Brown's work, but I just want more of that kind of work.
1. Less number of students 2. Maybe different time of the day? 3. More male students involvement?
more theorists not based in the US/west, more small group discussion and inclusion of more voices in the class
This course is excellent already! I have no other suggestions on improving it further!
Explain the political theory more. If this class is required by Women Studies, the instructor should understand that many students do not have a political theory/science background therefore people and views need to be explained more. Many students were often confused in the class because of political science discussions.
More material oustide the U.S.
More queer theory!! :)
Be more stringent on what is required of and in student presentations and provide feedback on these presentations so hopefully they get better throughout the semester. Keep track of time better; some texts have gotten no or not nearly enough digestive time.
Maybe less reading so we can digest material better.
23. Other comments:
I'm enjoying this course tremendously, and regret not registering in Kathy's courses sooner.
Thank you so much for providing the intellectual stimulus, which is not so easy to get these days.
kathy is a wonderful scholar and teacher, i feel thankful and honored to have studied with her. i just wish we could have had more full discussion by hearing from more members in the class and other writers/theorists from different feminist perspectives transnationally
Dr. Kathy is very nice and intelligent. Overall, even if this class is very challenging to me, I think I enjoyed every bit of it, especially the readings and the reports.
I felt like I had no voice in this class because I was not a political science grad. student. I did not feel my opinions were usually acknowledged as well.
Thoroughly enjoyed Kathy's seminar, I feel I have acquired a decent foundation of feminist theory that I can apply to my subject area.
I really enjoyed this class. Thank you!
While I've been extremely critical of of the student presentations, I think this can be remedied and this still remains one of the best courses I've taken. Professor Ferguson is one of the best professors I've had as well.
