It rekindled the passion I had for math. It was a refresher and there were a few new things I learned such as
It helps me broaden my previous understanding of Algebra.
Yes i had to take it for my Elem. Education in order to take Math 111 and Math 112. It definitely broadened my knowledge and refreshed my memory in Algebra and the basics of math

More group work and less sections so students can understand the sections more instead of jumping from one section to the next. Very fast paced course.

More activities to go with the lectures to keep students interested and allow them to process the information and understand the content.
The group work was really effective in helping everyone know each other and learn the course material. The study sessions before class also benefited the students a lot.

Maybe less sections so students are not too worried in trying to obtain that information then jumping to the next section again.
None. Mr. Furuto's teaching style is probably at its best. I think all (or at least most) students understand the material taught in this course.
Please make the morning quizzes at the end of the class and not at the beginning, since traffic and missed Buses can make students late for class and it is a bit unfair that they lose quiz grades for that.
Let us pick our own teams, find a different/more effective ways of submitting homework. Tell more stories of your kids! :) Let us use TWO sides of the index card for our exams, please

a good teacher. Helps students who has questions and very approachable. I just felt sometimes there was just too much to be done that i lost track on the materials being learned.
that he is a fun man. He is not scary and he is not boring. He doesn't speak in a monotone voice. He is a good teacher because of his patience and clear explanations of the lessons.

I'm glad I took Furuto for Math, I heard a lot of bad reviews from other students taking other math professors. This course and professor is probably the best class any student can take. In high school, I honestly learned nothing from my Alg. 2 teacher, so it pretty challenging to learn and refresh my memory on how to solve certain problems but with Furuto, it made learning easy. He's always helpful and willing to meet with his students.

a good course. I am not great in math but i feel it should've been less sections for those students who arent great in math can actually spend time to understand the topic.

I felt comfortable asking questions in this class, which says a lot because I normally shy away from asking help for fear of discouragement and feeling stupid, but that wasn't the case in this class. I would take this course again.
By far the best teacher I have had. He really takes the time to show me how to do things especially when he knows I struggle with Math.
I strongly recommend this course to anyone who has to take 103 and to take it with Professor Furuto!

Having time for review days and going over the study guides
It would be good to provide less problems for homework if there is only a 48 hour turn around period (i.e. Mon to Wed or Tues to Thurs) and more for work that's due over the weekend. Also there would be times where we would run out of time going over a section and it would feel rushed or we would not be able to do review although stated on the syllabus. Pacing better would be good.

Professor Furuto is a great teacher. He knows his field of study very well, and he communicates the lessons in such a manner that allows students of various skill levels to understand the material.

Michael Furuto assigns a lot of homework and as the material got harder it took me extremely long to complete but it did help me understand the material. He has an organized plan for the class so it is very easy to follow.

Very great & helpful! I really enjoyed taking his class. At the beginning of the semester I was really scared & nervous to take a higher math course, but as the semester went on I got very comfortable and began to like math.
Amazing instructor. Gets us to learn through different modes and changes things up by breaking us into groups. He answers emails and questions right away to the best of his ability and I like his funny stories!

I enjoyed this course because it wasnt too difficult but it did challenge me at times, but I enjoyed that.
The course is not extremely difficult for the reason that i learned a lot of it in high school but it was challanging enough I was not bored. I feel that I learned a lot and got a lot of practice on the things I already knew.

I have improved very much on the course material and find Dr. Furuto's teaching methods very helpful.
I learned calculus 1 in order to take calculus 2.
The calculus taught in class can be involved with my goals.
It helped me get a better understanding of my major in engineering.
This course has taught me how difficult and confusing math can be.. But it has also showed me the beauty of this subject. I will need to take math for a very long time in order to complete my major, so everything I learn in this course will better me in the long run.
I understood calculus better than I did when I took this course in high school. I liked that he was available to answer questions and go over test questions during office hours.

Use examples that pertain to the homework. Use more difficult examples in class in order to be prepared for the difficult questions on the homework.

Maybe some multiple choice questions will help me more.
More group work, it's always fun to work with others and when it comes to taking higher level classes, sometimes learning from peers is a great way to learn something one doesn't understand.
The only thing that needs to be adjusted is the time when it is taught. Maybe it needs to start in the middle of the day like 11.
If we are going to go over stuff in prior Math classes, there should be a quick review to refresh our memories, rather than throw questions from Math 140 or 135 into our 241 exam that we did not go over.

More group work.
Not sure if the professor has control over this, but questions that involved rounding on the homework were extremely frustrating when .00001 off on an answer. It felt common for questions on tests to be a significant degree more difficult than what was done in class or on homework assignments. I would prefer that test questions and in class examples match in difficulty.
There are no suggestions I can think of.
Aside from the normal lecture examples, I would like to do other harder problems covering the material we learn; especially before an exam. Sometimes I feel like I understand the examples we do in class and the homework we do, but then the exam questions always seem to be harder and I find myself not knowing what to do. I think I would feel more prepared for exams if we practiced with harder problems.
Try to make the lectures more life-like. They were often very boring. Also, have better reviews planned before exams.

Professor Furuto is honestly the best math teacher I have ever had. He explains things in ways that we all understand and always makes sure that he breaks everything down step by step to assure that we all are on the same track. I cannot wait to continue with him next semester!

This course is definitely no walk in the park. You NEED to attend every single class because if not, you will fall behind. You need to make sure you engage yourself in the homework and material for an appropriate amount of time. But because math is my favorite subject, this class has been fun for me and the lectures have been easy to follow.
If you're looking for a challenge an need a higher level math class, Calculus with Professor Furuto is the class to take. The environment is awesome and he even gives a mini story at the beginning of class.

Personally, I think this course could have been better if the homework was not as extraneous. I found myself taking over a few hours just to complete the homework assignments. I had to look at the question and write down my work to turn in for homework check. I think the amount of homework could either be reduced, or not make it mandatory to show your work. Time that had to go into other courses and priorities went into completing the homework assignments.

Honestly, the class is good and Professor Furuto is very helpful. Although the lectures are good, I feel like there should be more resources posted. For instance, Mymathlab can be bit vague. I would suggest offering youtube videos to assist or any other websites as a guide. Mymathlab is a way for students to independently learn on their own, but along the way we may need help doing the homework as we are by ourselves. I used several youtube videos for help as sometimes the examples online weren't enough.

The homework on mymathlab became a little outrageous. 40 questions having 4-7 separate questions inside is too much, not many students have that much time to complete that much work.

The only thing I would suggest is that maybe he could work on his time management? It's not too bad but sometimes I would be a little late to my next class but my other professors are alright with it because it's only a minute or two.
I would suggest supplying students with more resources with the homework just in case. (youtube videos, websites, etc.) The notes and videos/examples online may not be enough. Secondly, the class is great but i feel it would greatly benefit if it incorporated group learning. Furuto is a nice teacher, and I can see a lot more successful students if furuto can implement a way for students to interact with each other more and establish relationships. Moreover, I understand that students must showcase their knowledge and familiarity with all the content, but I feel as if the final shouldn't be based on everything learned in class. Several students may have other finals and work to deal with. Covering past material is a lot. Lastly, for the study guides they are a bit helpful but I feel as if you should post how you solved it and what homework assignment it is from.I believe it will help students identify what areas they need to work on.

My overall evaluation of Michael Furuto is that he is a very nice instructor who understands materials well and is very reasonable to talk to.

He is also very relatable, which was important for me, because I tend to have a greater sense of respect for teachers who are down to earth and have no problem showing their true colors.

Examples during lecture pertaining to the material in the homework should be added. Current examples are too simple to be applied to what was encountered in the homework.
Maybe create a PowerPoint that highlights the key points of the chapter that way more class time will be spent on practicing problems. For math I think that learning by doing problems is more effective than just learning by taking notes on what the book says. Since the exams are challenging, doing examples in class that gradually reaches the same difficulty level as problems students may come across on a test, may improve the class average and help students know what to expect. I find that when students know what to expect on an exam they study a lot better and do a lot better. The study guides are helpful, however most of the time students don't know where to begin with those problems. That's why I think if we spent more time on just doing problems during class the students would be more prepared by the time the exam comes around.
More group work and class involvement with problems being done on the board; rather than doing the problem and having the students just follow along and copy, the students should maybe tell the instructor what we should do next for the problem to ensure understanding/see what we donʻt understand.

As previously stated, examples that are more similar to what is given in homework.
-Less writing, More practice problems during class -Give students the study guide before review day, that way students can come to the review with questions about the problems that were difficult or confusing. -To get the main points of the chapter/section across have a PowerPoint that breaks it down into simpler terms so that it would be easier to understand and remember. And posting this PowerPoint up on laulima for future reference would be nice.
Utilizes Power points, self-solving, and lecturing very well.
He does a great job at doing examples.

He is an effective professor that nurtured a friendly classroom and helped us grasp difficult concepts in Calculus.
Great instructor, he really wants his students to do well in his class and cares enough to always be there whenever we need help. Does not intimidate the students, instead he makes the students feel comfortable so that we would want to keep trying to do our best and not give up. Just need to work on briefly explaining the concepts of the chapter/section and get to doing more problems so that we can be more prepared for the challenging exams.
He is an excellent teacher, and both in the classroom and out, heʻs there for his students and wants nothing more than for them to succeed and live on to their full potential. Heʻs very knowledgable, and despite the complexity of calculus II, he teaches in a way we can understand.
I think Professor Furuto is a great teacher that really cares about the students succeeding. He always leaves his doors open. He explains math in the most uncomplicated way possible and answers questions whenever we have any. He creates a great work and learning environment.

It was difficult but I actually enjoyed being in class.
This is a difficult course that requires a lot of practice in addition to understanding the concepts. But it is not an impossible course to do well in just as long as you do as much problems as you can before it's time for the exam. And doing the study guide problems help prepare you for the types of questions that may be on the exam, since they're worded the same way and has the same difficulty level as the actual exam questions.
Wonderful! Iʻm glad to have taken this course, and with him as the professor, Iʻd gladly take it again. The content is very complex, but itʻs also a very fun class.
