10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
He did a good job demonstrating various social work intervention and exposing us to different sectors of Health Social Work --i.e. agencies working with populations with aids, substance abuse, end of life struggles, homeless, etc.
Everything, especially the expressive arts activities
Since we are majoring in the health field, this class was right where I wanted to be. I have learned more about the models and theories of social work and in what circumstances they would be effective. The most valuable aspects of this course was having guest speakers (MSW, LSW, PhD) that are in the SW field and shared experiences and suggestions with us. It put a lot of perspective on what is out there in the real world. Being able to complete a toolkit at the end of the semester really put the course content all together. This toolkit provided us the opportunity to share different tools in the SW field that have had a positive influence in our practicum sites and for some in their job sites. This was an awesome class. I think that ALL social work students should be required to take this class.
The diversity of topics and the range of guest speaker he brought in most valuable. They were social workers from many kinds of backgrounds and work, all very thoughtful and generous people.
Having current social work practitioners (in addition to our instructor) was extremely helpful and beneficial, especially being that it is our last semester before we begin our careers. These guest speakers brought our attention to various aspects of the field that most of us have yet to run into; how to establish boundaries, what to do in ethical dilemmas, and how to approach graduation (licensing, interviews, resumes, experience etc).
I learned so much from the course and the guest speakers! Thank you so much!!
The numerous guest speakers and panels we had this semester gave me a better picture of the kinds of roles taken on by professional social workers. I feel this was very appropriate for the last semester as I prepare to become a professional in the field.
Learning logs
I really enjoyed doing the deliverable assignments in this course since I felt I learned a lot from doing it. Also, the course material/readings I felt were interesting and pertinent to the subject matter.
All of the experiential activities.
Group Presentations: Although working in groups is usually a hinderance for me, mainly because of my schedule and the commute I have to deal with driving from Ewa to Manoa every day, I challenged myself to see this as a learning opportunity. In social work we're always going to be a part of something bigger, a larger team of individuals, one that is most likely interdisciplinary including physicians, nurses, law enforcement, etc. Having been required to put together presentations, etc. within the class setting was a perfect opportunity for me to practice working with diverse people (future professionals). Interestingly enough, with the help and support of my group members I was able to complete my assignments and survive this semester. I don't think I could have made it this far without their encouragement and guidance. Truly the most valuable experience I had in SW 723.
The hands-on experiential activities were most fun and helped me to retain the information presented. Mahalo!
Guest speakers were very excellent and gave us all great insight into the "real" world and opened our eyes to new opportunities upon graduation.
Experiential learning exercises, class discussions, panel discussions
Learning the different theories and models and how to implement them into our practice.

18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
He's a genuinely caring person that is creative and unique in his teaching methods. So awesome and supportive!
Professor Kim was very knowledgeable and motivated about SW in the health field. He allowed us to be a part of every discussion and we felt comfortable to discuss some intense subjects in class. He supported us and took the time to further explain certain assignments we weren't clear on. He also took the time to talk to us if we needed the extra time on a particular subject we discussed in class. Professor Kim discussed and practiced with us some of the models and tools we could use in our everyday lives as a SW. He was very passionate about all of the subjects we discussed in class and taught it in such a way that it was easy to understand and grasp the focus points. He is truly an asset for UHM MBT School of Social Work.
Professor Kim has a terrific range of experience to bring to the classroom, dedication to the learning experience, and a generous and joyful spirit.
His personal work experiences really helped me paint a better picture of how certain psychotherapies work best within specific settings and with a particular population. It has been such a pleasure and a blessing to have him as an instructor as he is extremely knowledgeable and helps students understand how theory is incorporated into practice. Even though he is not currently working in a health care setting, he has a wealth of knowledge from previous health care work settings and has still been able to provide insight and supervision for the students.
He was open to student concerns and always clarified things to ease the students anxieties. He should be a full-time professor at the Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work.
His flexibility and willingness to adapt the syllabus to meet our needs and preferences made learning more enjoyable and engaging.
He communicated well and always offered opportunity for improvement.
John is readily available to students and responds quickly to emails.
He is flexible enough that you can work with him.
John has inspired me on so many levels. He's encouraged me to speak up more in class and climb outside of my comfort zones in order to participate in discussion. He's made me feel more comfortable utilizing social work theory and how they can be applied to our practicum/work setting. And most of all, he's made me realize how valuable I am as an individual (including my strengths and personal experiences) and as a future social worker and what it is we as a profession contribute to the healthcare arena.
Professor Kim has a professional approach, but at the same time he is able to relate to the students and make use of his creative arts to teach the class activities for the field that are relatable to each class lesson.
He is very passionate about his profession and he has very good tools to pass on to his students from his own experience working in the field.
Patience, flexibility, knowledgeable
John Kim was an amazing professor. I loved how he incorporated expressive arts therapy into a lot of our lessons. He was empathetic, understanding, kind, and knowledgeable. I never felt intimidated in his class. Awesome experience.

25. Other comments:
My appreciation for how John teaches and get students to understand the field of Health Social work is hard to put into words. He should be made a permanent faculty. He is by far one of the best instructors I've had in the program and better that some of the tenured faculty.
Thank you, John. We are so blessed to have you as our teacher . I came away with invaluable lessons! It's been a great year and I hope you are able to stay on as a SSW instructor, so more students can experience all you have to offer.
Thank you, Professor Kim for the opportunity of being a part of the class. I learned a great deal and look forward to using all of the tools you provided us in class in the real world as a SW. I hope that our paths will cross again in the future!
I am very grateful for the experience of this class.
Allow him to teach again.

Thank you for a great semester of learning and growing! Have an awesome summer!
Grading was not always concrete. I felt that it was impossible to obtain a perfect score on papers, and this is why the class always chose a presentation over a paper if given an option. Often, points were deducted with no specific reason.
Amazing professor. Amazing course. My favorite class of the year. I am so sad that it is coming to an end...

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The syllabus was well-laid out and comprehensive, and the assignments were good learning opportunities. I would have benefited from more visual kinds of instruction, such as videos, or powerpoint presentations that were more dynamic or provocative of thought and discussion.. Discussion amongst classmates was very good, although some students were extremely quiet.
Experential activities in the class were the best.
I loved all of our class discussions. It was really helpful to get feedback from my professor, and my classmates.
Professor Kim addressed some of the Models and Theories that we really didn't cover in our other classes. Some of them were new to me and I learned the basic elements of these theories and models and it helped me in my practicum when assessing patients and meeting with family members/caregivers. These lectures provided me a better understanding of each theory and model. I found also that practicing interviewing techniques were helpful in improving my skills as an MSW intern.
Being able to share stories about our practicum experiences, which allowed us to normalize the anxiety and fear of being new to the profession. Also being able to bring knowledge that we have acquired at practicum to the classroom setting and share our resources with our fellow classmates.
I really appreciated role playing and integrating practice. Those experiences not only provide insight on client interaction, but also gives a wider perspective of the different routes each social worker may take when tackling a problem. It also showed the differences in how each social worker may rate various issues a client is facing.
Experiential learning exercises were excellent!
Readings and class discussions were always great to hear other perspectives and gather more information on subjects that I felt I needed clarification with. The hands-on learning made the information stick in my mind in a way I can remember easily and the activities were useful and relevant to social work practice.
Discussions with the class about readings and other topics. Also enjoyed the experiential activities.
The readings, discussions, and presentations was very valuable to my learning.
John does a good job in sharing information and reaffirming the knowledge/thoughts/opinions of his student. He is empathetic to his students, although at the same time very obvious when someone shares something he doesn't relate to or care for.
I really liked the role playing activities. It was a fun and new method of teaching.
John Kim did a great job at setting up the tone for the class. This was done by asking if there was anything the students wanted to learn in particular. I really enjoyed when he brought in different social workers to talk about their field. He was the best professor I've had in my whole graduate school career.
The class discussions, case presentations, and activities like role play helped me tremendously and understanding various theories, concepts, models/interventions, and social work values or principles.
1. CLEAR Paper 2: Compare & contrast write-up between biographical texts and person experiences. 2. Group discussions: student experiences at practicum sites (micro- and macro-level based)
Learning how to apply different models, theories, and perspectives to clinical practice was really helpful.

18. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
John Kim is approachable and appealing as an instructor. He was very open to hearing students' viewpoints and ideas. He was very good at leading discussion amongst students, and has a good sense of humor, too.
he is always accommodating and willing to make sure you understand the material.
I loved how he incorporated hands on activities into his lessons.
Professor Kim provided a nice atmosphere in the class. This allowed us to freely discuss the subjects as a class and in groups. Our discussions in class were kept within our class and he was very open to all of our responses. As an MSW student, he treated us with respect and allowed us to provide feedback freely and without feeling judged. He was very professional and passionate in his knowledge of the social work field. Professor Kim also provided us with suggestions and tools we could use at our practicum sites which were very helpful in our development as future social workers.
His different approach. The activities were more hands on and not as much by the textbook. It always kept things interesting.
John had such a huge knowledge base. He has had years of work experience in multiple settings and could consistently provide examples of course concepts to real life situations. This is SO helpful as it helps us get a clearer understanding on the concepts covered in the book. He is also very passionate about sharing social work theories, policies, and services. He was always prepared for class and went out of his way to create this class a memorable experience by introducing different in-class activities. I really appreciated this and look forward to having him again next semester.
Professor Kim has real-life experience from his current job at Tripler, as well as his former professional experience. He is an engaging, caring, and excellent teacher!
His artistic approach and use of hands-on activities - I can definitely make use of these examples.
John was very understanding and fair with his teaching.
He is nice and approachable. It was helpful that he used his own experiences into some of the lectures.
He was very knowledgeable.
He brought with him his experience and expertise from the field and shared it to the class, which was wonderful because we got to learn more about what it's like to actually practice social work.
1. Diverse working experience within the healthcare setting (Foundation, Tripler, etc.) 2. Very knowledgeable and animated - lecture/presentation
He has experience in the health field and is therefore very knowledgeable in the health care field.

Great course:) Looking forward to the next!
I just wanted to say thank-you to Professor Kim. It was a very informative and positive semester. You played a big role in our understanding of the concepts you introduced to us. We do hope that you will be teaching another course in the Social Work Division as you are an asset to the University of Manoa-MSW Program. Thank you for your time and patience.
I think it's important to be very clear about expectations for assignments. Several people were surprised at the grades they received for certain assignments and weren't quite sure why exactly they deserved that grade. It just seems that grading could've been a little more lenient for our first paper since we didn't quite know what to expect, especially having to fit all the information into just three short pages. Overall though, this was a great class. Enjoyed having John Kim as our professor and hope that he will be able to teach his elective someday soon. He's very kind, supportive, knowledgeable, and passionate.
I love reading the textbook for it is extremely helpful in not only understanding social work in from a health perspective, but it informs me of concepts and theories that I encounter within my practicum setting. While the outside readings were interesting, I don't feel as though it was necessary to read to novels regarding cultural and ethic issues within the health care setting. I also didn't feel as though I gained as much out of a class period when we would spend it discussing the textbook as it stands in congruence with the novel. Other than that, I really enjoyed this class!
Thank you for an awesome semester! Happy Holidays!
Make John a permanent staff. His personal, professional, academic and ethnic background offers a lot to meeting the different goals of the course and make his class interesting. I even like that he brushed upon queer issues in the field, although could help expand on this for future classes. Perhaps, address various health barriers people of color, different genders, handicapability and queer individuals and families encounter in future classes, and the social theories for meeting the broad spectrum of clientele. Overall, I enjoyed this course and encourage John to keep teaching this class! Two thumbs up!-Keo
The description of the assignments were minimal and were given the class before the assignment was due. The expectations of the assignments were unclear, and the grading was hard. In contrast, I am very grateful for the extra credit opportunities. Notes on papers; on how to improve would be helpful as well. However, the professor was great at lecturing the class and made coming to class fun. I really hope he comes to teach again. I have not had too many professors who challenged me academically, which was enjoyable.
