9. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
going into classical theory is scary as we don't feel confident about abstractness of theory and get threatened by it. i don't know if there is any way to make it less abstrat, at least at the beginning that would help us to make our cross-over easier.
I think Dr. Koo provides us a good method and teaching style for this class. I hope he will provide students with a useful ways of understanding the main point of this course. Thank you.
More discussion to apply theories
There is no easy or elegant way to teach classical theory. I could make suggestions, but in the end a successful class on this topic is really dependent on the make up of the students.
Dr. Koo is a great professor. I gained an appreciation for his teaching method because he is ultimately concerned with getting students to think critically and reflect on course material long after the class has ended. Koo is very critical of students writing, but this is ultimately beneficial for students because many of the lessons are applicable to our everyday lives, but to do so requires a thorough understanding of the sociological theories taught in the course. Overall, great course.

I think that Dr. Koo is a good instructor and he provides us a large knowledge for this class. Thank you so much.
I have to retake this course next year because I wasn't understanding the material effectively.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Learning about the social aspect of Korean Life.
Dr. Koo is very knowledgable, and clearly knows the history and cultures of the Korean People. Classes were planned out, and concepts were taught well and questions were answered quickly. E- mails were replied to quickly and grading was very fair in the class. I would highly recommend this class to anyone interested in Korea or Sociology Majors.
Interesting and broad overview of Korean Sociology.
Good learning atmosphere.
I enjoyed the lectures as well as the group project.
I enjoyed all aspects of the course.
what i liked about the course was when we got to do presentations about certain topics
Professor is very passionate about the subject. The topics covered in the coarse are all very interesting.
learning about the way that Koreans think, and the history of Korea and the way it connects with the people.
I enjoyed the lectures that Professor Koo went over because it made me think more about Korea and they were interesting to me, considering my Korean heritage. The group project was fun because we got to learn more about certain aspects of Korea.
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Limited Class interaction
There was no part of the course that I disliked.
none
I didn't really like the book report simply because the book I chose wasn't very interesting.
I didn't care too much of the readings we had to do because some were very long and a little boring. If it was a little condensed, then I wouldn't mind.
17. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
More visual material.
Dr. Koo could maybe post up his power point lectures online which would be available to the class.
I feel that the powerpoints with the lectures should be a little more picture oriented. There should also be a little more class participation because otherwise it's just the professor talking and people start to lose interest.
maybe if students miss too much class have conference to see what they missed and how they can improve grades
The choices for the book report can be expanded. Possibly more video presentations.
Perhaps show some video clips to make the class a bit enjoyable. I'm sure there are some video clips that goes with the lecture subjects we had.
18. Other comments:
Great professor, knows his topic and very professional.
i really enjoyed the class
The teacher is very understanding, and I appreciate him a lot. He's not as strict with the other teachers. I think he is the best teacher in the course and I'm glad I've taken his class. This is the best sociology class I've ever taken. The books, and articles were very interesting too.

15. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
I learned a lot about different aspects of globalization. It was challenging so I enjoyed it. Even though I'm not a globalization guru, I really enjoy the topic.
For the first half of the semester, the class was focusd on understanding of globalization and then the second half of the semester, the class was focused on diffenrt aspects of globalization in East Asian countries. I really liked the format of this course.
Student/instructor interaction.
The class discussions and having both Dr. Koo's and Dr. Steinhoff's expertise.
Prof. Koo's discussions in class were the highlight of the class for me. He took concepts that were difficult in the readings and made them clear and easy to understand and showed how they connected to the other readings we did in class. His clear thinking helped me to improve my own thinking not only on globalization, the topic of the course, but just on making arguments and providing support in general. I also really enjoyed Prof. Steinhof's contribution to the class. Having two professors in the class improved the level of discussion in class and made the students think through their ideas in depth.
The theoretical part, the background knowledge about globalization
Theories of globalization and neoliberalism
16. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
It was hard to understand at first. Some of the reading, I still fail to understand completely.
The way the readings were assigned was sometimes confusing (which readings were optional and which were required) and often the scans of the readings on Laulima would be difficult to read or have parts of the page cut off. The topic was also extremely broad so it almost ended up being a survey course and we weren't able to go into detail about any one topic. When we were in charge of leading the discussion in class, I feel that guidelines and clear expectations would have been nice. It worked out well in the end, but I feel I could have done a better job if I had clearer guidelines before leading the discussion.
The textbook by Giddens (Runaway World), which offers only general knowledge about globalization and might be not proper for graduate-level students.
I don't know
17. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
I guess an easier textbook, because it was too difficult for me.
The outline for each paper assighment will be helpful. Look into each aspect of globalization (e.g., education, migration, etc.)was good, but if we look into more details for each East Asian country, we may have better understanidng how globalization has impacted on each country at defferent degree.
If the subject were narrowed down to a much smaller subject, if the readings were all available in a readable form from the start of the class, and if more guidelines were given regarding leading discussions in class. Improving those three things would improve the class.
Replacing Runaway Wrold by other textbook.
I don't know.
18. Other comments:
Dr. Koo was always supportive and avaiable outside of class. Even though I am not majored in sociology, he has been supportive to help me understand the concept of globalization throughout this semester. I really appreiate his help.
Even though sociology is out of my comfort zone, this course was certainly one of the best classes I've ever taken.
I really enjoyed the class, particularly the in-class discussion, and feel that the class has helped to have a much better understanding of globalization and the issues and topics related to it.
The combination of Hagen Koo and Patricia Steinhoff is amazing and really helpful for students to understand East Asia.
The course is perfect from me.

The course was very interesting and I would recommend this course to everyone who are interested in Korea.
My overall evalution of this insturctor is 100% good, excellent skills of teaching for our understanding to the subject of the matter is. I think in the future, he should have more presentation. That would be it, thak you! Mahalo
Very good. He was very well organized, and presented a lot of interesting material. Koo really knew the material and did a good job of lecturing. One area where the class could have improved was with a little more discussion, but the group projects allowed students to give their own viewpoints so this was not a huge issue. Overall great course and professor.
good teacher. very knowledgable of the course and content. wants his students to succeed.
i learned a lot from this class, good teacher, i never think the korean class would be this interest..thanks nice job...
I think professor Koo is a great teacher. I'm glad I had a chance while he was still at Mano. He travels, giving lectures and teaching at several different universities. It was an honor taking his class.
i learned a lot from this class. professor koo made the materials interesting and it made me want to know more about the subject.
was a good teacher that was able to open mind in a positive way towards Korea, i am very happy that i took this course! i am just amazed at the amount of information that i didn't know about Korea that i now know

Knowledgeable, helpful, and committed.
Articulate, knowledgeable and compassionate
Thoroughly Analytical
Perseverance, knowledgeable, demanding
thoughtful, capable, knowledgable
Dr Koo has a deep understanding of the subject, which allows him to communicate central concepts clearly in terms that are both accessible and challenging. I would recommend this class highly.
An excellent scholar, demanding on the performance of students.
Empathic, accomplished, and excellent
The instructor was very responsive to students. He excellently demonstrated knowledge of the course content. I particularly like the two book review assignments and the instructor's selection of books. By reviewing the two selected books, students understand better how theories have been adopted in practical research.
