The course was paced well
Follow the textbook.
I liked how she explained the class materials. Used quite a few of videos that covered some of the class lectures.
She seems to be innovative as to adding course-related activities; she brings in alternative/current videos...
Teach us very valuable information we should use in every day life.
This is the first on line course that I've taken and I was pleased that everything that needed to be done was laid out in our syllabus.
Allowing the quizzes/tests taken online at any time; very convenient.
I feel she did well with taking the material and applying it into a scenario that made it easier for me to understand.
The instructor was extremely knowledgeable about the course that she teaches.I enjoyed this course and shared alot about what I learned with friends and family.It also helped me take better care of myself and my family by making healthy lifestyle changes/desicions in the food that we eat and prepare and changes that will help us live better and avoid future health problems.A course that everyone should take! I learned alot!
Dr.Robbins had us read aloud from the text in a further effort to create a inclusive group atmosphere. Class time goes by quickly because Dr. Robbins is interesting to listen to. This is an evening class and particularly hard to keep focus when all you want is to put your up and cruse.
Karen Robbins runs her classroom very fairly and efficiently. One thing I was extremely impressed with was the way she absolutely will not tolerate immature students disrupting class time and would immediately take action to separate them so as not to take important class time away from those students who were there to truly learn. Kudos to her!

I really enjoyed the tests, activities and how each assignment was graded on time!
24. What else would you like to say about this instructor?
Some of the things on quizzes and tests were not taught in class. She couldn't answer some questions that were asked by students.
Unfortunately, the way the class is structured does not offer students a complete learning opportunity. The notes for the class are straight out of the textbook in a fill-in-the-blank format that Dr. Robbins reads aloud. As she reads, we are to fill in the notes. I find it distracting and am unable to process the information because I am too concerned with getting the notes right. At test-time, I have to search for the information because I have not had the opportunity to really listen and absorb the information. When students ask more challenging questions, Dr. Robbins either does not know the answer, or answers in a round-about way that leads to something different than what was originally asked. I feel I know more about Dr. Robbins' many vacations to Europe and New Zealand than I do about food science. I don't feel I have received the knowledge on this subject that I was craving.

She is well organized and keeps everything that we need to know or do in Laulima. If I have any questions for her, I use Laulima and she get's back to me ASAP.
Her classes are easy, yet I still learned a lot.

She is a fantastic teacher. Patient and willing to take the extra time to help students out with any questions or will stay when class is over so others can take their tests and quizzes.

Thus far, Karen Robbins has been the best instructor I have have encountered in pursuit of my academic career at UH-Maui College. She is professional, always prepared and exceptionally knowledgeable in her course material.
That she should explain the chapters more instead of typing things out and just doing the test right away. it gets confusing.

Karen Robbins is a good teacher and always gives us the time if I do not understand anything. She gives us extra credit. She is a very good teacher.
She talks with a mono tone voice so it is very hard to stay awake for 2 hours.
I personally do not learn from an insturctor who reads off information. It is hard to type notes and listen to her lecture. It was hard to learn the information given, so it became hard to take the tests. I am a very hands on learner and i found the class to be very auditory.
I enjoyed that she is a working professional - a dietician - and that she used her experiences and knowledge to teach us.

I would like to say that Karen is a wonderful teacher that has a whole knowledge of Food and Human Nutrition. I heave learned a lot about Nutrition and Fitness as well as applying it to my daily life.
25. Comment on the instructor's concern for the students.
She incorporates the outreach classes very well.
She encourages us to read and respond to other classmates comments and discussions. Even though this is an online course, I still feel close to my classmates because we are always communicating through Laulima.
She cares about them and returns emails promptly.
I feel Dr. Robbins deeply cares about her students. Like i stated earlier, she'll go over any questions you may have (during or after class) and will actually stay behind (after class is done) so that students can get in their test or quizzes before they leave.
Seemed to care about all students doing well in her course!
I am dyslexic and the original way the test format was presented it was very hard for me. I talked to Dr. Robbins; the rest of the tests had smaller and fewer of this type of garnering answers.
As previously stated, she is very fair and refuses to allow any student to take time away from other students unnecessarily. She will stop her lecture to answer any and all questions students may have of her but will not allow disruptive students to disrespect her or their fellow students. She treats her students with respect and as the adults they are and expects nothing less than the same in return. She is genuinely concerned for the academic progress of her students and is willing to assist them in any way to help them achieve success.

Karen does care about her students because if she did not she would not give us extra credit.
She reminded students the importance of logging on for our tests. She was also considerate of the class as a whole when she moved a student to the front of the class.

There were questions that I answered "Neutral" and that is only because the question said "in class". Overall this online course was great!
One of the things I really liked about this course and Ms. Robbins was that my assignments and exams were returned promptly.
Overall, I really enjoyed the class with Dr. Robbins. She has a great insight into nutrition and I'm always eager to hear what she has to say about the next subject. All around, very fair and can't complain one bit.
Excellent instructor!!!!!
Dr. Robbins quizzed the class after exams on answers that were most missed by our individual section. This demonstrates her quest for better comprehension of material by all her students.
I wish all instructors at UH-Maui could be of the caliber of Dr. Robbins. I thoroughly enjoyed going to class each week and looked forward to her lectures.

I encourage everyone to take Karen Robbins class they will learn a lot and have fun also.
I think that the class could be more interesting if fun activitys such as somethign hands on was implimented. I feel that Powerpoints are a bit more interesting than coping notes for a few hours. I found that I lost interest during class. she is a Very knowledgeable and nice instructure however I did not find her method of teaching helpful towards my type of learning.
I think that Dr. Robbins did her best. This class was the most rowdiest I've ever attended. I am embarassed for the teacher that some students were disruptive, rude, and inattentive.

She answered all of our questions when we asked the to her.
She explained subject matter extremely well, especially being a dietician she was interested in what she was teaching. I really enjoyed taking this course sand would recomend it to a fellow student.

Any question I had, she would alaways give me an answer in a timely fashion. Although this was an online class, I felt like I had the attention of Karen when I needed it.

I took one of Dr. Robbins' online classes and feel like she included as much pertinent information as she could within the timeframe given for the class. I really appreciate the note taking guides she assembles for each of the chapters in the book.
There is not one single thing this teacher did well in my view.
I felt the web assignments was fun and informative. I also liked the response to the assignments in the grading.

Interesting teacher
She is an excellent teacher. Treats each student the same and she is fair to everyone.
She is well trained in her field.

She is a great teacher and again she is very knowledgeable on the subject that she is teaching.
I think that Dr. Karen is a very sweet, and friendly person. I can tell she loves what she does. She as a person is also very interesting and lively.

She can move a little fast when going through the notes. I would like to write less and listen to what she is saying more. Sometimes the questions on the test are not covered in the book or notes but is something she said seemingly in passing. Can be a bit evasive when answering questions.
Awesome instructor, I'm glad to have been in her class. If I could do it all over again, I would've wanted to go into the field of nutrition. I am glad to have been under her instruction because she not only knows her content, she is so easy to talk to and get along with. Mahalo nui.

Really liked the postings you would make us do. Sometimes I wasnt able to finish my readings in time so doing the postings allowed me to learn things I might have not been able to read.
Needs to learn how to spell check on everything! Homework was a waste of time in preparing for the online quizzes. Some questions were had incorrect answers as choices.

Dr. Robbins is an absolute asset to the University - I wish more classes in this field were offered here.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. Her online class, a "Canned classroom", was almost pure junk. Her curriculum, study guides, quizzes and tests were based on a previous edition of the text, one I don't have access to, therefore, it is outrageous to hold me responsible for this material (I have begged for faculty oversight to examine and verify my statements since the beginning of the semester, and no one has helped me). Her work is filled with typos, misspellings, nonsensical questions, errors and there is virtually no correlation between study guides and the tests they're supposed to prepare me for. When asking teacher for help, I got responses like "I'm on vacation." NO mention of helping me when she returns. No help after she returns.
I did not like this class at all. I loved the subject and even reading the text book which I didn't expect. I felt the quizzes and exams were not focused on the important parts of the class, the questions repeats itself often, and I found more than one right answer to a question. There was also questions that weren't in the textbook. I felt their was too many mistakes to point out and I felt burdened by my other classes to go through all the mistakes therefore I had to settle for a very low grade. Even though we were provided a review sheet it was useless and didn't help out on the quizzes or exams which is it's purpose. The review sheet took about an hour just to fill out with no purpose. I felt the web assignments was very thoughtful and should be kept but should require more students to give a thoughtful reply and maybe a minimum words of 300 per assignment. The major improvements should be focused on the quizzes/tests and if you are going to have a review sheet then it should be for the review or might as well not offer it at all.

Not compassionate at all, I had pneumonia and was out of school for two weeks. Had been to the doctor multiple times and brought a note in to excuse my absence. I had missed two online quizzes and a test. Yes they were online but i had pneumonia and was on strict bed rest from my doctor. She would not open the quizzes/test for me to take at a later date and said i was home so i should have been able to take them. Then another student had a death in the immediate family and she was equally not compassionate and said he should be taking the online quizzes during his absence since I was sharing the notes with him. I understand holding students to a high standard but I think that under the circumstances that is just ridiculous.
She would ask the class or students if we understood what she was talking about when she gave us notes or giving examples of a situation that we were discussing about.
I think that Dr. Karen does care for her students and truly believes that we can do a good job. She let's us be independent, and does leave it up to us to get the job done. She doesn't baby us, which is really great because we are at that stage where we don't and shouldn't be babied. She's also teaching us how to be adults.
I think she should make the test time longer. But for quizzes the time is perfect.
She seems very nutural but friendly at all time.

Dr. Robbins was very unfairly criticized by one of the students in our class. This student went so far as to try to rally other students against Dr. Robbins. In my opinion, this student's accusations were way off-base and held no merit. In contrast to what this other student had to say about her, Dr. Robbins was always available for my questions, answered my emails promptly and gave me great feedback on my assignments. The time she devoted to putting together our study guides shows that she's a devoted instructor that goes the extra mile for her students. I appreciate her efforts and applaud her for a great learning experience.
She showed NO respect for her students by putting out extremely poor quality course materials; no respect for me when I came to her with my problems and issues. Sloppy, messy, disorganized course work shows a lack of respect for students, and I resent it very much.

I resent the amount of time I've had to spend on matters not related to learning in this class. Learning seems not to be a priority for this teacher. As someone who loves school, loves learning, this is very offensive to me.

I liked that the class is structured the way it is. It is always consistent. I know when things are due and there are no surprises in the schedule. My favorite thing about this class is that I am able to move ahead in the schedule if I am able to. I don't have to wait until the end of the week to know what is coming up for the following week. I am able to prepare ahead of time which is a plus for me. My schedule outside of school is busy and this course allows me to work at a steady pace without overwelming me.

There was little interaction with teacher and student. The course was an online course, but i had little contact, one email, from the instructor through out the whole course. The course content i found interesting. The discussions that were posted by other students were interesting, but there could have been more interaction from the instructor.

I liked how she was very orginized through out the semester. We followed the timeline of the syllabus.
She planned out her lessons really good. Everything was consistent and easy to understand. This is by far my favorite class because of how everything was organized and planned out.
Having web assignments. I thought that was good to have us do a little research on the subjects that we were studying. It helped to supplement with our chapter readings.
Since this was an online class I thought she was good in responding back if there were any questions and if there were any corrections she would let us know right away by email.
She challanged us with online assignments to learn more about our health and nutrition.

I take the online class so I can't answer most of these questions but overall, on the internet class, I personally will recommend this class to others. She's a genuine person and is well organized.
She had everything well put and it definitely was well thought out very well organized and she also post the assignments in advanced for students to do if your ahead.

Her class was very interactive with weekly postings and her quiz' prepared you well for tests. She puts alot of work into keeping the class organized, and she does it much better than most teachers.

Karen is a very helpful teacher. I was heasitant about online classes but Karen helped me navigate the website and now im a pro.
I dont know if Karen Robins let her students do makeup tests but if that is true then she might want to extend the deadlines if we contact her before the duration time limit is finished. Or if there was anymakeup or extra credit could be administered for those who missed the tests and quizes
Zero. This is an online course, I understand. But there is no personal connection. It's "read the chapter, look at some sight and summarize an article, take a quiz."
I never had any problems so i would not know.
As an internet course you can't do much with these students because the internet is the only communication.

This was my first on-line class. I did not like it. I guess I need to see and interasct with my teacher along with my classmates.It might take me a while to accept the new age of teaching. It really lacks the human,social aspect that we've come to expect.
This class is a joke; if I knew I was paying to read a textbook I wouldn't have ever signed up. I can't believe something like this will have an effect on my GPA.

Explaining about certain terms of foods.
She has passion and love for your job and it shows.
I like the guidelines that she goes through in each class. I like the notes that she gives us because it really helps for the quizes and tests as well.
I truely appreciate how organized my instructor was! Dr. Karen had a set schedule, and we pretty much stuck by it. It really helped to have set dates for when everything was due. I also liked that she encouraged us to bring food labels and props into class so she could examine them. It was really helpful to examine food nutrition labels as a class.
The instructor did especially well on providing an activity such as going to supermarket to check out the nutrition facts and which of the following foods are healthy. In addition, the instructor also provide a note-taking guidelines to go along with the lectures.
She give a lot of examples about our subject matter. Always generalize the topics and connect it to our daily living...

She uses great techniques in teaching through websites and activities to make the student understand the importance of knowing about nutrition.
She gave a quote first thing in her syllabus that i didn't understand at first, but i got what she was saying after the first chapter. Good organization throughout the online classes, loved it! This course helped me improve my health and educate my family about nutrition.
I now have a very good understanding of basic nutrition and diet knowledge because of this course.

Dr. Robbins is an asset to Maui Community College. She is one of my all time favorite intructors in my educational experience ( UH Manoa, Uh West Oahu, MCC) Her style and her demeanor along with the way she carries herself is excellent. One concern is the subject of quizzes and tests held online. For example, there was only one shot to take the quiz and if internet was disconnected unexpectedly and could not log back on while the test was in progress, like on a home computer, I would have to forfeit my quiz and get a bad grade on it. There was no makeups for the tests so I think that is a bit unreasonable because accidents do happen and cannot be prevented at all times, especially internet connection.
Did a wonderful job on her concern for her students. She reminded me about turning in the Supermarket Activity assignment and our first test.

At the beginning of this class I had a difficult time trying to understand. After giving Dr. Karen a phone call and explaining my situation, she made suggestions and I tried some of them. I really enjoyed this course and her positive feedback and attitude towards the class. I feel she is a superb nutrional teacher and am glad to have taken her class here at MCC. She is very knowledgeable and open to all questions.
I had a great time taking this course online (it's my first time). Thought it would be easier than showing up to class but it seemed the same because the time on the web doing research made up for it. I got to learn a lot about nutrition and human health. This course will help me with my future by staying healthy.
The questions on the quizzes were relevant to the reading. I enjoyed learning this material and questions were useful in treating and helping unhealthy people.
I am not a health freak yet but I have learned a great deal on how to balance my diet and to stay healthy. There was alot of history about foods and was interested to read the book more thoroughly. Those weeks went by quickly and am excited to see my grade.

She should speak louder, explain lessons a little more, give us more time to do worksheets while she is available for help and let us know how we can get in touch with her for further help.
Maybe make more of the notes from lectures, for exams, a little more student dependant - make them search , and therefore read the chapters to fill in the notes. I really like the format for the chapter notes - but make it a little more challangeing for the students rather than just reading it to them word for word. can be another aspect for graded assignments.
Emphasize on what will be on the test.
There are way to many notes to follow up on. Maybe reducing the amount of notes and focus more on main points and test questions. Also, the test are way to hard and to possibly be able to pass the test you need to have your notes available during the quiz because the questions are pretty complex and there are so many from different chapters.
I understand that this is a food and nutrition class, but it seemed to me that the instructor comes from a one sided view; that view of a skinny, healthy, vegetarian-type, who eats well. She overlooked the fact that despite the title of the course, there are those individuals who may not fit the mold of the "all-american" girl or boy. In our class, we had several overweight students and some of the ways the instructor spoke gave the impression that they made wrong choices in their lives which is why they are the way they are and that "they" will or most likely get health issues because of this choice. Her comments "because of being overweight" or "suicide with a fork," I know hit a cord with some of my classmates. I don't think she did it intentionally, but it was done and I think perhaps she needs to evaluate the way that she chooses to speak to her students.

I really enjoyed the Supermarket assignment where we got to do an assignment away from the computer. More assignments like that could be fun!
I loved this class and learned a lot, which kind of surprised me because I thought I already knew a lot about the subject matter. The only thing I would like to suggest is that when returning grades regarding discussion posts on Laulima, it would be helpful if you could reference the "module/unit #"in the subject line of the private message on Laulima instead of just saying "grade". Then it would be easier for students to doublecheck that you have returned grades on all their discussion and web assignment posts.
More participation on her part would be appreciated, just to see her online presence more, such as responding or initializing more postings/updates/or just providing more supplemental material in understanding the text. Or anything to spice things up a bit.

The instructor could improve the teaching of this course to make sure that the websites she tells us to go to for web assignments/web discussions are available and up to date. The instructor could also have this big warning sign at every quiz/test telling us that UH Laulima is not available at a certain time.
Professor Robbins could improve her teaching by allowing students to make-up missed quizzes and exams if they were facing difficult time in life due to death or family problems.

She is very professional, but she should learn to keep an open mind toward other majors and be sensitive to the fact that she uses certain terms such as "obese" or "African" when we have people of that nature in our class.

This course is a little tough for a 100 course. There is a lot of note taking, homework and tests. The tests are very hard. It is a very tough class, yet very interesting, but it could be toned down a notch.
I learned alot from the course but struggled with the test. Homework was good along with the lab and projects. Need to cut down on the notes!
Dr. Robbins is very knowledgeable about her profession as a nutritionist. She always came in well dressed and prepared with current articles to share or personal experience stories to share about the dayâ??s topic. I would probably have enjoyed the class more if I was actually in Kahului where I could have more class interaction. Because I took this class via satellite, it was difficult for the instructor to interact with Lahaina and Molokai students often. Unless it was role call or asking questions, little interaction was made with the outreach classes. Often it was technological issues such as broken microphones for students, voice distortion (loudness and static?), and the tech person not following the class well (sometime had trouble following from to instructor, to ELMO, to whiteboard, to other classmates, ect). Also, I did not like how an entire class period would go by with just note taking on the agenda, most of which are just excerpts taken directly from the book. I don't feel I gained any special insight into certain subjects that I couldn't have garnered on my own from just reading the text. A classroom setting should provide a more interactive experience than just taking lots of notes. I enjoyed the video breaks that we had at the beginning of the semester; more of those towards the end would have broken the monotony.

I think this class should be offered as a science alternative for all campuses because it is very much relevant to each individual's life- much more so then some of the standard science courses. I was really grateful that my academic counselor allowed me to take it.

Overall, I really enjoyed Professor Robbins online nutrition class. The only thing I would suggest is that she be more understanding towards students who really want to succeed in life.

I liked this course and feel like I learned a lot.
It's a good class, but the class itself online is complicated trying to connect with the teacher..
I really enjoyed taking the 2 food classes with her. I learned alot about nutrition and why it's important to stay healthy. If I did not take these classes I would not have taken the time to gather the information I learned here. I enjoyed doing the assignments and reading the discussions from my other classmates. I have recommended this class to other colleagues..
Very well put together and the time frame, plus the processing was great. I would recommend this class to others.l
