I really like Aune. He is really funny and makes class interesting.
Podcast and Friendliness of the professor
His will to see his students improve in the classroom all while learning the subject in which he teaches.
Aune encouraged the class to discuss and collaborate with eachother to hear everyone's views on certain topics.
I liked how "fair" the tests were. They were written to accurately test our knowledge and covered the material correctly.
I liked the maxims and conversational implicatures. That information is so fascinating.

13. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Class discussions and examples helped me to grasp the concepts of the class lessons better.
Humor. Time flied really quickly in his class
Learning about the different ways in which humans interact and communicate with each other.
-Thinking outside of the box. -Questioning why we operate the way we do.
This course gave me a whole new understanding about communication and helped me gain a totally new perspective on communication as a whole.
The overall coverage of all the theories and how many of the communicative interactions demonstrate theories beyond our understandig.
The most valuable aspect of the course was the information on common ground understanding, it was a theme that resonated through out the course.
I like learning about what stimulates a thought it was very interesting! I also liked when he would give relatable examples of a situation that we could understand and connect with.

Lectures
The information and concepts were very interesting. I really liked learning about communication in a different light.
14. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
Even though the project was a little difficult, I appreciated the independence of the assignment because it helps strengthen our research and writing skills.
New insight about communication. It changes how you see communication
His approachability.
-MEMES
The research paper was extremely useful to me as a student. Have a much better understanding of how to wright a research paper because of this class.
Being able to take these theories and apply them to communicative events in our lives.
I found the teacher was the most valuable resource in the course probably because he kept insisting on talking with each student both in and out of class.

Aune is a great teacher, he just goes off topic so much! D:
Good content, just get lost after like the first ten mins of class.
Great class
This was a very beneficial and well-organized course. I enjoyed the teaching style and coverage of the material very much.
Group work sucked. He did not clearly state what format for the data he wanted us to use and was never available for help. Need to have SET office hours. Never responds to emails.
Dr. Aune is a great teacher, i would definitely take him again. The topics we talked about in class were intriguing and informative. Dr. Aune provides great insight into each topic. The difficulty comes from the open dialogue, when opening up to the class and allowing student to talk about their understanding there is a clash of ideals that come out. This can lead the rest of the class to lose focus and understanding about the point of the lesson. I struggled with understanding the point of the research project. I didn't see direct relevance and think that in the future it would be prudent to help students understand the correlation of the project to the class not just the gaining of life skill.
Dr. Aune is very professional and intelligent. There is a suggestion I have for this course to be improved. There are people like me who don't really understand when people are speaking fast and using huge vocabulary.I would love it if professors explained things in simpler form and made sure everyone is on the same page as them. Other than that, Dr. Aune looks like hes very passionate in teaching message processing.

Good teacher
Dr. Aune has the ability to teach the course well and fascinate students with the content. But I feel that he needs to be less opinionated (he has offended quite a few students in my class), more organized in his lectures, and refrain from getting off track in his lectures. It is difficult for me to follow his lectures as he goes off track and talks about something else that are sometimes irrelevant to the subject. Dr. Aune is an intelligent man and I enjoy learning from him but his disorganized lectures and offensive opinions made quite a few people in my class refrain from attending his class. I really hope Dr. Aune can improve on his lecture structure so future students will not go through the same frustration my classmates and I have experienced.

8. What did you like best about the course?
It was good that Professor Aune recorded his lectures.
Aune
Informative
Your availability to help us outside of class. Many students had to come in and talk to you about their group projects and you were always available to help out.
How relatable Professor Aune made it.
I enjoyed Dr. Aune's examples because it helped me understand his concepts.
Everything, Dr. Aune made the class very interesting
His examples were really great; it's almost as if he's taught this course many times! (Purple elephant) It helped me a lot with learning.
Professor Aune was a fantastic instructor showing detailed knowledge of the course. He was friendly and respectable. Definitely the reason I made an effort to come to class and stay awake.
It taught me so many things that I took for granted.
I liked that I learned a lot more than I had anticipated I would. I had the preconception that this class would be like other communication classes I have taken but I was very wrong.
I really enjoyed learning about the different mediums in communication and how we are able to convey messages. I am also so grateful that Aune made himself available when it was convenient for me.
His way of being able to relate his content to things that are simpler to understand.
Aune is so flexible with anything, you can stop by his office for questions at anytime

13. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Recorded lectures.
The research project.
Working in a group for the final project was most valuable because we helped each other understand the concepts in class and get our work done.
The way he explains things, the way the powerpoints were represented, and how he managed his tests.
The amount of time, though it may seem long, allowed for classroom discussion and understanding of the material. If the class met more days a week, with more time, I feel that the material would have enough time to make an impact on those interested in the field.
How everything was connected to real life.
I liked that this particular course is something different from what we are used to learning about. It really makes you think about things you wouldn't normally.
I believe that the lecture slides were the most valuable, because it really allowed to see what Aune was talking about in a bigger picture. Also, the fact that many references were used so that we could picture and imagine the concept in order to remember it later on.

Everything, Aune's course is the one where you need to listen and absorb everything you hear
14. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
This course makes you look at what the possible definition of what communication could really mean.
The research project.
Dr Aune was always available to help whenever we needed him.
Thinking about everything may be the most valuable thing. Everything has little components; everything we take for granted such as memes exist and it's a shame no one thinks about them.
Professor Aune allowed discussion which helped students to understand the information.
Same as last...
I found the research project the most valuable because even though it was not easy, it was good knowing we could conduct research and report it in a professional manner.
I would answer this question the same way I did number 13
I liked how he allows us to ask him questions during the exams because he cares more about us learning and passing the class than most professors.

I'm glad I'm finally done with that project! We kicked ass though. Can't wait to see our score!
Went of topic a little too often. I'm glad he was friendly with students, but having side conversations or allowing people to speak up and put us on different topics made it hard to stay focused in class
A bit confusing on if we actually do need SONA credits or not. I was unable to find it in the syllabus. But it was stated in class that we need 2 credits of it. Though not to worry about it because we should have been participating in our fellow classmates research projects?
This class has to be one of the best classes I have taken in my college career. Professor Aune has been one of the most understanding and helpful instructors who takes time so that his students know the material and requirements. On top of that, the course material is interesting; and with Professor Aune's experience in the field, the course brings new light and interesting perception to how we process messages. I enjoyed coming to class so much and learning this incredibly interesting information that I wish the class had met more throughout the semester to cover the material in more depth.
Difficult but very interesting class and Dr. Aune did a great job teaching it.
Thank you for such a great opportunity! Wish there were more classes I could take that Aune taught!
2-1/2 hours is too long of a class. The normal time range for the day is good enough. I think I would've retained more info and understood it better if it was in a shorter class.

I like Dr. Aune he's very knowledgeable but I thought that the course could have been executed in a more clear manner. I thought that I should have learned a lot more. It is very common for him to go off on a tangent which can be bothersome when trying to stay invigorated and attentive to the subject matter. Made it difficult to want to attend class after the first month. I also didn't feel comfortable with him finding it funny that someone of a previous semester had once spoken up about Mr. Aune's usage of swearwords. I think that if someone found it important enough to approach higher staff about it is something to be considerate of and take in as constructive criticism. It doesn't seem professional on his part to talk about it that way when our comfort and safety as students should matter. He's made several rude comments in class which makes him come off arrogant.

Having podcasts recorded so you can listen to them over again to get a better understanding or listen to them if you missed class so you know what was convered
R. Kelly is knowledgeable about his subject and passionate which makes it easier to learn and understand
All content was very interesting and needed, to fully understand what was being taught.
Examples in lectures helped SO much!
Lectures were interesting and engaging.
I thought the most valuable aspects in this course were interpreting utterances and their true meanings: when people say something that they think is the right description but it actually has nothing to do with their desire/intentions (Wanna grab a bite to eat?) but we are able to interpret it anyway.
Learning how to write a proper research paper although it was extremely difficult.
Our research project
The lectures were very interesting!

I liked this class a lot, especially because R. Aune is a great professor. He is really friendly and funny and he has the ability to make class fun. He is also very helpful, because he will always find a way in helping students out.
Hard to study for your class even when you show up all the time and pay attention to the lectures. Though slides are available online with audio compliments it is so much to sift through and hard to grasp at times.
Dr. Aune is very knowledgeable. He is funny and makes the class interesting. It's hard to take notes in his class because he goes off on a tangent in every topic.
I noticed that Aune tended to use big, ridiculous words when sometimes they weren't needed. I know though its just his style because of his big, ridiculous brain.
Aune is a very good professor and gives very good examples. His lectures can be very intellectual and hard to follow at times but he has great examples and explains things multiple times to avoid confusion. The final project is extremely difficult if you have not taken statistics or research methods in the past. The criteria to the final project was all stated clear on Laulima but was still hard to follow. I suggest advisors informing students that the course may be difficult if the student has not taken Research Methods.
Love this class! Very informative

11. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
ability to do research
The course was dependent on the lectures, which were open to discussion and malleable.
The research project
Creating my own research study was the most valuable.
The research project
Not sure
It was relatable to the students from his tangents... however, I lose track of what we were talking about after going on a tangent...
Aune's teaching style is requires the students to used higher level thinking. He uses more logic and reasoning than facts and figures like many other classes.
Everything.
The group project
The original research was the most valuable.
Individual meetings with him.
Learning how to write a research paper.
The most beneficial part was Dr. Aune's ability to articulate the theories and make the lectures easily understood by all.
Learning about the field itself gives you more insight to how you view our social world.
It was a radically different perspective of Communicology, and for that it added depth to my understanding of my major.

GREAT CLASS!!! i love Dr. Aune!!!
None.
Slides could be a little more interesting, we needed more time for the group project, and maybe have more of the class be interactive instead of lecture for so long.
Professor Aune had extensive knowledge on message processing, but here was no textbook, and information wasn't clear.
DR. Aune is one of the best professors at UH. He goes to great lengths to ensure that the students are grasping the material. He is always giving multiple examples, inserting humor, and nudging the students through the lectures. Next, he is always available for meetings and more than willing to take time out of his day to help if needed.
I wish there was a textbook for the class.
COMG 302 should be a prerequisite for this class, since prior knowledge of research methods is needed for this class. A lot of students hadn't taken 302, so had a difficult time for the group project.
He is an amazing teacher very helpful

Kelly's lectures were great. Since this is the first time this course has been taught it's difficult to lecture on it. But Kelly did a good job of explaining what was certain and what was still up for debate in the new class material.
Dr. Aune's insight on message processing. Very interesting point of view.

I know this class is your baby Dr.Aune but rememeber to have flexibility with the class material. You are a wonderful professor and chair- you have made learning exciting again. I have learned invaluable lessons. I apply ComG theories all the time- to the point where it elicts eyerolling from my friends. It just means you have taught me well. Only area that might need some improvement is the paper- it is heavy duty stuff! Some students are not as versed in the terms and techniques of crafting a literature review and experiment. Most of my teammates did not take research methods yet. All the reason more why I'm not fond of team projects- although I understand your logic of why it might be easier to split the work and that's how it is in the "real world", I know. I would rather do it on my own, it is much less stressful. I hope you continue to teach this class- we need it!
Proud to be one of the first Communicology graduates in the world! Hope to see this program grow! Learned lots!

Dr. Aune is very enthusiastic and fun. But he also knows his material very well and can explain it in simple terms for his students. I think very highly of him.
When students ask me about this course, I am indifferent. I do not recommend it, nor do I tell my peers not to take it. The final paper seemed a bit irrelevant to the course content...therefore causing my indifference.

The repetition of the methods his uses and the visual examples that he provides (graphs, charts, concert numbers, etc..) during lectures.

Strong examples and repetition of difficult material.
he applies to real life situations
He taught us how to better understand statistics, that's valuable.
Kellys epic sense of humor, no but honestly Dr. Aune is one of my favorite professors
Learning how to understand journal articles
Truthfully the whole course in general is a course that I will never understand, and it is completely confusing from start to finish. He was a very good teacher tho but this course in general is something that when i signed up for speech my whole aspect of speech had nothing to do with this course.
Everything that I had learned had great value, but I feel like I won't ever use it again unless I went to graduate school, which I will be not.
I found that Professor Aune was very knowledgable and because of that he was able to express concepts and ideas very well. The powerpoints were well done and when coupled with the repitetion of concepts the class seemed easy.
the entire course was very useful
7. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
Learning how to read and understand research articles.
The most valuable thing Professor Aune covered in class was the explanation of statistics and how to use the formulas. He explained it over and over again in clear detail so that everyone in the course would understand.
The concert examples of the statistics to help illustrate how the formulas work.
how to analyze numbers
I don't know
Sometimes too redundant on some subjects...but this is most likely due to the different levels of the students.
he applies real life situations
He taught us how to better understand statistics, that's valuable and helpful.

Shows why he is head of the department.
This class made me notice how "cool" it is to be able to understand statistics and actually conduct studies and analyze the data. Dr. Aune is a "true" teacher who deeply care about students' learning process, rather than giving them grades. I felt greatly motivated to learn more thanks to his passion!
I wish we had more homework assignments to practice doing SPSS runs. Then it would be great to read and interpret the results. I don't feel like I have a strong grasp on creating a valid study with good measures. Perhaps reading method sections in other studies with explanation would benefit the students.
Dr. Aune is always available to help with any questions whether it is related to class or not. He takes the time to explain each concept until all students understand it. This was a challenging course.

The material itself is proving to be very useful.
the repetition of the material (it was necessary)... and the podcasts
Dr. Aune records his lectures. I found this very valuable because Dr. Aune understands that this class is difficult and requires more than class time allows to grasp each topic. Dr Aune is also very willing to help students outside of class.
how Aune elaborated and took his time on each concept/idea-this helped greatly to understand the material better.

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The information about nonverbal messaging perceptions and memes. Research project also helped with Speech dept. in general
the message code of communication
I found the real-world examples and lectures to be the most informative and valuable materials in class. The professor provided excellent insight and information concerning the practial use and application of the information taught in class. Accordingly, the information seemed more relevant and useful.
Prof. Aune relates concepts to really life and gives many examples to help you better understand the materials presented. He also post his lecture notes prior to class which allows you time to review the material before attending his lecture.
The examples that Professor Aune used to explain the material really helped me grasp the concepts we learned.
the daily lectures
the fact that the teacher knew everything that he was talking about and that he had genuine enthusiasm toward the class
To have powerpoints during the lectures so that we are able to follow along and take notes.
I feel that the most valuable aspects of this course was being able to learn how to apply concepts from this course into real world context. I am enjoying working on the research paper; i have never done my own research paper such as this one that is assigned in SP 370.
Learned how to give survey/analyze data and write a research report Understanding the basic level of human verbal communication was very helpful
The Final Research paper
All the theories, because I was able to apply them to real-life situations.
The group presentation allowed us to do independent research on a variety of subjects that all members had some interest in.
The concepts of all the non verbal cues males and females do
The lectures were all interesting.
Creating our own empirical research.
Dr. Aune's personal examples given for the concepts were very useful to grasp.
- cost friendly - the lack of a text book meant that there was more need for the student to go to class to get a better understanding of the material. - the professor was personable, allowing for students to ask questions outside of class as well as during class. - gave multiple examples of a given idea, which made learning new ideas easier.
The material presented in class was easy to relate to the real world.
I think everything was valuable and gave me a different look at communications.
using real world examples to explain different theories
The course did a good job of challenging my preconceived notions regarding the field. the course took everything I had learned in past speech classes and put a new spin on it.
Course material.
the research project
The most valuable aspects of the course were the material and the professor. The material, although dense, was very informative and interesting and the professor "communicated" it clearly.
10. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
Least valuable-there was so much info that is was hard to intensely understand every concept Helpful-when the key concets were explaained and applied to everyday examples
nothing much

There should have been activities or assignments to not only help our grade but to help us understand the course material more
N/A
Some of the lectures were a bit long winded.
Not having a text book for this class. There were some things that were hard to understand from this lectures and referring to a book would have clarify things better.
The tangents
The group projects were more of a hassle due to uncooperative group members.
Tangents
Too much lecture material in one day gets us dozing off.
Not having a book. It was good financially, but i felt like there was nothing for me to fall back on in terms of information.
Nothing, everything was useful.
the research paper was to long
Challenging my notions led to confusion, but that confusion was easily allayed by the instructor.
The group research project.
The aspects of the course that I found the least valuable and least helpful were the breadths between speaking, although that time did allow me to digest the material. I would like more time for the class since the material is very dense. I'd only like more time with the teacher, allowing him to expand on the content in a classroom setting since the allotted time is not enough.

Most valuable-he was so nice, smart, understanding, and just funny. Most helpful-he was always ready to help explain anything and take time to help students anytime
the data analyze
The instructor was very charismatic and informative. I enjoyed his sincere interest in the subject matter. It really allowed for a more entertainting and equally informative class. The teacher was very approachable and willing to help.
Prof. Aune is very helpful and encouraging. He also is more than willing to work with you, outside of class to review concepts, answer questions, and help in any way that he can. He is one of the most flexible professor that I have worked with as far as accommodating students and their schedules. Whenever I needed help, he was willing to work around our schedules to make time for us to meet. He is truly interested in his students learning and increasing knowledge!
He is very approachable and helpful when it comes to teaching the students. Also he always seemed to push us to do better than what he expected of ourselves.
willing to help you anytime and explain things.
If I didn't understand a concept he was good at finding examples that made it clearer.
He is very approachable outside of class. This allows any unanswered questions to be figured out. He is also very responsive to e-mails which save me as a student time and is very helpful.
He was avaailable all the time and cared about the questions we had in class or after.
He is very easy to talk to and would answer any questions that a student may have.
I liked the way the instructor used real life examples to get us to understand the material that was being taught. He was also very knowledgeable. I think it is awesome when professors can talk so clearly and know exactly what they are talking about and teach it to us in a way that we understand the information that they are trying to get across. He is a verbal communication professor, but not all teachers have the ability and intelligence that he does.
His ability to make things simple and comprehendable
He is always available for discussion and help in regards to not only the class at hand, but any other questions we may have.
Dr. Aune was also willing to lend a helping hand- even if his schedule was jam-packed.
He was willing to answer any question, even on exams, thoroughly.
Always available to students needs, replies back to emails on a timely manner, and is easy to talk to/approachable type of person. He always tried to make class interesting and fun using personal examples.
How much he knew about the course
Prof. Aune is a nice mix of laid back and professional. This made it easy to get involved in the class. He also made me feel like he was a professor I didn't want to disappoint.
Enthusiastic, Knowledgeable
He was always willing to meet during office hours and help.
- he was accessible outside of class for consultation about the project. infact he encouraged it as he wanted people to see group's data prior to writing their final papers.
I felt the examples professor Aune used in class really helped me gain a greater understanding of the knowledge presented. His use of real life examples made it much easier to grasp the material.
Willing to put in extra time to make sure you have a clear understanding of whats going on.
open office hours and friendly
Dr. Aune definitely knows what he is talking about. His depth of knowledge greatly helped me understand very complex ideas and theories I might not have otherwise understood.
He was always available for extra help outside of class if something was not understood. Always made time for students. Very funny teacher who is relaxed and tries to make the class fun.
interested in students' understanding
The professor was very knowledgeable about the topics covered in class. His presentations were well prepared and contained valuable information pertaining to more than just the class, it pertained to actual life experiences. He related the material to real life situations through personal stories and examples.

He has a tendency to go off on tangents while lecturing - while at times these were helpful, they were often unrelated to course material

Prof. Aune did make a lot of references to another speech class as if everyone in class already took the class. However, I, and a bunch of other students, did not. So, I know I felt I bit left out when he'd make the references.
Tangents
Sometimes he would go off subject in class for a while and that makes us lose track of the current lecture materials.
Sometimes examples would turn in to stories, which were entertaining, yet it sometimes seemed like we were wasting time.
Nothing, great instructor everythings he does is helpful and valuable to the class.
amount of work we had to do into the research paper
he has a tendency to go on tangents that seem random, but they tend to give the mind a break from wrestling more complex ideas.
Sometimes he will go on and on about something and it is hard to get a clear answer about a topic, theory, term, but he always give examples so it isn't too bad. Expects you to work hard! Hard exams! Need to go to class to understand material.
