The interactiveness of the class
I like Dr. Aune he's very knowledgeable but I thought that the course could have been executed in a more clear manner. I thought that I should have learned a lot more. Yes, I can't blame everything on him but if he made class more organized and didn't go off on tangents I'm sure the whole class could take more away from it. But, what I liked best was that the class
Exams were a fair test of knowledge.
Aune was very funny and made the course interesting even though the material is kind of boring.
I liked that we moved to the new room. The Grover activity was also really fun because it reinforced the concepts we learned about vocalics, etc. in a fun way that you could easily see.

COMG 302 should be an official prerequisite to this course.
None
It is very common for him to go off on a tangent which can be bothersome when trying to stay invigorated and attentive to the subject matter. Made it difficult to want to attend class after the first month. I also didn't feel comfortable with him finding it funny that someone of a previous semester had once spoken up about Mr. Aune's usage of swearwords. I think that if someone found it important enough to approach higher staff about it is something to be considerate of and take in as constructive criticism. It doesn't seem professional on his part to talk about it that way when our comfort and safety as students should matter. He's made several rude comments in class which makes him come off arrogant.

DR. Aune is one of the best professors at UH. He goes to great lengths to ensure that the students are grasping the material. He is always giving multiple examples, inserting humor, and nudging the students through the lectures. Next, he is always available for meetings and more than willing to take time out of his day to help if needed.
GREAT CLASS!!! i love Dr. Aune!!!
great teacher!

COMG 302 should be a prerequisite for this class, since prior knowledge of research methods is needed for this class. A lot of students hadn't taken 302, so had a difficult time for the group project.
He is an amazing teacher very helpful
Professor Aune had extensive knowledge on message processing, but here was no textbook, and information wasn't clear.
I wish there was a textbook for the class.
Slides could be a little more interesting, we needed more time for the group project, and maybe have more of the class be interactive instead of lecture for so long.

I think there is potential in this class. However it was still pretty rough because its such a new class.
I know this class is your baby Dr.Aune but rememeber to have flexibility with the class material. You are a wonderful professor and chair- you have made learning exciting again. I have learned invaluable lessons. I apply ComG theories all the time- to the point where it elicts eyerolling from my friends. It just means you have taught me well. Only area that might need some improvement is the paper- it is heavy duty stuff! Some students are not as versed in the terms and techniques of crafting a literature review and experiment. Most of my teammates did not take research methods yet. All the reason more why I'm not fond of team projects- although I understand your logic of why it might be easier to split the work and that's how it is in the "real world", I know. I would rather do it on my own, it is much less stressful. I hope you continue to teach this class- we need it!
New and exciting course
Dr. Aune is very enthusiastic and fun. But he also knows his material very well and can explain it in simple terms for his students. I think very highly of him.
Proud to be one of the first Communicology graduates in the world! Hope to see this program grow! Learned lots!

Great teacher for this new course
When students ask me about this course, I am indifferent. I do not recommend it, nor do I tell my peers not to take it. The final paper seemed a bit irrelevant to the course content...therefore causing my indifference.

Truthfully the whole course in general is a course that I will never understand, and it is completely confusing from start to finish. He was a very good teacher tho but this course in general is something that when i signed up for speech my whole aspect of speech had nothing to do with this course.

the material taught
Everything that I had learned had great value, but I feel like I won't ever use it again unless I went to graduate school, which I will be not.
Kellys epic sense of humor, no but honestly Dr. Aune is one of my favorite professors
The research we had to do.
Learning how to understand journal articles
he applies to real life situations
The use of statistics and how to apply it
I found that Professor Aune was very knowledgable and because of that he was able to express concepts and ideas very well. The powerpoints were well done and when coupled with the repitetion of concepts the class seemed easy.
Strong examples and repetition of difficult material.
The repetition of the methods his uses and the visual examples that he provides (graphs, charts, concert numbers, etc..) during lectures.

He taught us how to better understand statistics, that's valuable and helpful.

how to analyze numbers
I found the concepts of deviation to be quite interesting
Learning how to read and understand research articles.

going over information over again so we can understand it.
he applies real life situations
The most valuable thing Professor Aune covered in class was the explanation of statistics and how to use the formulas. He explained it over and over again in clear detail so that everyone in the course would understand.
Professor Aune. He is always will to take extra time to listen and explain anything you do not understand. He also took the time to use multiple examples for the concepts so that more people could comprehend the topics.
Sometimes too redundant on some subjects...but this is most likely due to the different levels of the students.
The concert examples of the statistics to help illustrate how the formulas work.

I love Dr. Aune he is a great teacher !~~~
I enjoyed his teaching but research methods i really dislike. I don't think this should even be part of speech. If i wanted to learn more on how to do a research i would of signed up for another major.
hope he grades leniently, it is not a course that should be under 302. it should be a 500 level class
He made himself very available to helping outside of the classroom. He wanted us to succeed and that is not something you see in a lot of teachers nowadays. He gave everyone a chance to succeed, and I saw that in his teaching. Great teacher.
Thank you for everything Dr.Aune
This class is really hard.
The test was way too hard. Need to break down the information more if it's going to be on the test. Please consider study guides
Great instructor, great dept. chair one of the best at UH Manoa that I have had.

I wish we had more homework assignments to practice doing SPSS runs. Then it would be great to read and interpret the results. I don't feel like I have a strong grasp on creating a valid study with good measures. Perhaps reading method sections in other studies with explanation would benefit the students.
Dr. Aune is always available to help with any questions whether it is related to class or not. He takes the time to explain each concept until all students understand it. This was a challenging course.
This class made me notice how "cool" it is to be able to understand statistics and actually conduct studies and analyze the data. Dr. Aune is a "true" teacher who deeply care about students' learning process, rather than giving them grades. I felt greatly motivated to learn more thanks to his passion!

9. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
using real world examples to explain different theories
The Final Research paper
The information about nonverbal messaging perceptions and memes. Research project also helped with Speech dept. in general
I found the real-world examples and lectures to be the most informative and valuable materials in class. The professor provided excellent insight and information concerning the practial use and application of the information taught in class. Accordingly, the information seemed more relevant and useful.
the daily lectures
Dr. Aune's personal examples given for the concepts were very useful to grasp.
the fact that the teacher knew everything that he was talking about and that he had genuine enthusiasm toward the class
The course did a good job of challenging my preconceived notions regarding the field. the course took everything I had learned in past speech classes and put a new spin on it.
- cost friendly - the lack of a text book meant that there was more need for the student to go to class to get a better understanding of the material. - the professor was personable, allowing for students to ask questions outside of class as well as during class. - gave multiple examples of a given idea, which made learning new ideas easier.
I feel that the most valuable aspects of this course was being able to learn how to apply concepts from this course into real world context. I am enjoying working on the research paper; i have never done my own research paper such as this one that is assigned in SP 370.
The examples that Professor Aune used to explain the material really helped me grasp the concepts we learned.
The concepts of all the non verbal cues males and females do
I think everything was valuable and gave me a different look at communications.
Prof. Aune relates concepts to really life and gives many examples to help you better understand the materials presented. He also post his lecture notes prior to class which allows you time to review the material before attending his lecture.
The group presentation allowed us to do independent research on a variety of subjects that all members had some interest in.
The material presented in class was easy to relate to the real world.
The lectures were all interesting.
Learned how to give survey/analyze data and write a research report Understanding the basic level of human verbal communication was very helpful
Course material.
Creating our own empirical research.
the research project
All the theories, because I was able to apply them to real-life situations.
To have powerpoints during the lectures so that we are able to follow along and take notes.
the message code of communication
The most valuable aspects of the course were the material and the professor. The material, although dense, was very informative and interesting and the professor "communicated" it clearly.
10. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
the research paper was to long
There should have been activities or assignments to not only help our grade but to help us understand the course material more
Least valuable-there was so much info that is was hard to intensely understand every concept Helpful-when the key concets were explaained and applied to everyday examples
N/A
Not having a text book for this class. There were some things that were hard to understand from this lectures and referring to a book would have clarify things better.
the research project
Too much lecture material in one day gets us dozing off.
the powerpoints. they were very brief.
Challenging my notions led to confusion, but that confusion was easily allayed by the instructor.
nothing...i'm really enjoying this class
None
The tangents
Nothing, everything was useful.
The slides were a little wordy and hard to understand without lots of explanation
n/a
Some of the lectures were a bit long winded.
Not having a book. It was good financially, but i felt like there was nothing for me to fall back on in terms of information.
The group projects were more of a hassle due to uncooperative group members.
The teacher gave some irrelevant examples which turned into tangents and I got lost.
The group research project.

nothing much
The aspects of the course that I found the least valuable and least helpful were the breadths between speaking, although that time did allow me to digest the material. I would like more time for the class since the material is very dense. I'd only like more time with the teacher, allowing him to expand on the content in a classroom setting since the allotted time is not enough.

20. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
open office hours and friendly
He is always available for discussion and help in regards to not only the class at hand, but any other questions we may have.
Most valuable-he was so nice, smart, understanding, and just funny. Most helpful-he was always ready to help explain anything and take time to help students anytime
The instructor was very charismatic and informative. I enjoyed his sincere interest in the subject matter. It really allowed for a more entertainting and equally informative class. The teacher was very approachable and willing to help.
Always available to students needs, replies back to emails on a timely manner, and is easy to talk to/approachable type of person. He always tried to make class interesting and fun using personal examples.
He is very approachable outside of class. This allows any unanswered questions to be figured out. He is also very responsive to e-mails which save me as a student time and is very helpful.
He was always willing to meet during office hours and help.
He was avaailable all the time and cared about the questions we had in class or after.
Dr. Aune definitely knows what he is talking about. His depth of knowledge greatly helped me understand very complex ideas and theories I might not have otherwise understood.
- he was accessible outside of class for consultation about the project. infact he encouraged it as he wanted people to see group's data prior to writing their final papers.
I liked the way the instructor used real life examples to get us to understand the material that was being taught. He was also very knowledgeable. I think it is awesome when professors can talk so clearly and know exactly what they are talking about and teach it to us in a way that we understand the information that they are trying to get across. He is a verbal communication professor, but not all teachers have the ability and intelligence that he does.
He is very approachable and helpful when it comes to teaching the students. Also he always seemed to push us to do better than what he expected of ourselves.
How much he knew about the course
willing to help you anytime and explain things.
Willing to put in extra time to make sure you have a clear understanding of whats going on.
If I didn't understand a concept he was good at finding examples that made it clearer.
Prof. Aune is very helpful and encouraging. He also is more than willing to work with you, outside of class to review concepts, answer questions, and help in any way that he can. He is one of the most flexible professor that I have worked with as far as accommodating students and their schedules. Whenever I needed help, he was willing to work around our schedules to make time for us to meet. He is truly interested in his students learning and increasing knowledge!
He was willing to answer any question, even on exams, thoroughly.
I felt the examples professor Aune used in class really helped me gain a greater understanding of the knowledge presented. His use of real life examples made it much easier to grasp the material.
Prof. Aune is a nice mix of laid back and professional. This made it easy to get involved in the class. He also made me feel like he was a professor I didn't want to disappoint.
His ability to make things simple and comprehendable
He was always available for extra help outside of class if something was not understood. Always made time for students. Very funny teacher who is relaxed and tries to make the class fun.
Enthusiastic, Knowledgeable
interested in students' understanding
Dr. Aune was also willing to lend a helping hand- even if his schedule was jam-packed.
He is very easy to talk to and would answer any questions that a student may have.
the data analyze
The professor was very knowledgeable about the topics covered in class. His presentations were well prepared and contained valuable information pertaining to more than just the class, it pertained to actual life experiences. He related the material to real life situations through personal stories and examples.
21. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
amount of work we had to do into the research paper
The only "Complaint" i have with him is he is so smart and sometimes gets off topic. BUT, he's funny and I love him
N/A
Nothing.
Sometimes he would go off subject in class for a while and that makes us lose track of the current lecture materials.
The powerpoints were not very helpful unless you went to class all the time. Sometimes he would go off on tangents not relevant to the topic and I would lose concentration and my train of thought
he has a tendency to go on tangents that seem random, but they tend to give the mind a break from wrestling more complex ideas.

Nothing, great instructor everythings he does is helpful and valuable to the class.
He has a tendency to go off on tangents while lecturing - while at times these were helpful, they were often unrelated to course material
N/a
Sometimes he would get agitated and then begin embarassing or showing aggression to specific members of class. It wasn't often, but it happened a few times.
Sometimes examples would turn in to stories, which were entertaining, yet it sometimes seemed like we were wasting time.
Prof. Aune did make a lot of references to another speech class as if everyone in class already took the class. However, I, and a bunch of other students, did not. So, I know I felt I bit left out when he'd make the references.

Sometimes he will go on and on about something and it is hard to get a clear answer about a topic, theory, term, but he always give examples so it isn't too bad. Expects you to work hard! Hard exams! Need to go to class to understand material.
