11. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the course?
Review papers and journal articles
The basic principles of genitic manipulation.
The concept of plant breeding for desired phenotypes and genotpyes was most valuable and helpful for a career in plant breeding. Another valuable asset was the dynamics of all the students in the class throughout their diffrent disciplines.
The course covers many hard, recently developed topics. I am very grateful that the professor was willing to teach these new, complex subjects. The course has sparked a new interest in my own research.
12. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the course?
Lecture
All topics discussed were valuable.
The least valueble of the course was the way it was set up. I think the foundation of genetic breeding and concepts should come before the marker assistance, transformations or even polymorphisms.

21. Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
I would have liked to have some sort of discussion time (maybe a lab session) on the lecture topics. Maybe if we were assigned review/journal articles (20 pages or less is ok) to read and lead a discussion (for each topic), it would have been more productive. For these sort of topics, I think having class discussions (about the review paper/journal article) can really help in the understanding the concepts/methods taught in this class. There should be assigned readings for each of the topics discussed.
I think group discussion is encouraged. It is done by giving an article and discuss it in class.
Dr. Manshardt was prepared for class some days and not on some somedays. However, we always started late and finished late(majority of the classes). In the future, reading assignments and lecture information should be given prior to class in order for the student to be prepared for the lecture. As a class, we didn't have that access to reading material. Even with use of Laulima, we would always have to wait for old lecture slides, when in class he mentions it will be available to us. Some times its not available for 2 weeks the orignal lecture.

29. Other comments:
There should be assigned readings for each of the topics discussed.
Excellent course!
Exams should be returned in a timely manner in order to guage progress throughout the semester. After taking the 1st exam, we expected the exam to be returned before the 2nd exam; that didn't happen. This occured throughout the semester; the 2nd exam wasn't reruened before the 3rd, and we haven't gotten back 3rd exam and we are looking forward to the Final. I do not know where I stand academically in this class. Shouldn't I know this?
Again, I want to say that the professor deserves much credit for developing a new course that covers many useful topics that are not taught in any other course.
