13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Allowing to make corrections on assignments to receive lost credit. This allows us to show Chadwick that we understand the content of the class.
He is funny, if have thick skin, his humor is dry so it sometimes seems like insulting but it isnt. He has so much knowledge in his brain.
Dr. Chadwick is very intelligent and passionate about his field of study. I think it is very generous of him to allow us to do corrections on our assignments.
He knew a lot about international relation history and incorporated the theories into real life situations (or instances from history)
He would go over the things on the quizzes before handing them out
He is an expert on the hints he talks about.
He knew what he was talking about and he was accommodating to questions and concerns. He's also really good at dealing with issues with have in groups.
Richard Chadwick is a very patient teacher. I honestly appreciated that fact that he (for the most part) teaches with the concept that the time in which it takes to learn the material is irrelevant. As long as the student can demonstrate that they understand the material being taught by the end of the course, they can pass. I have little to no prior knowledge on the subject of political science before taking this course, so the fact that we can take extra time to learn and fully understand the material was extremely helpful for me.
He let us do test/quiz corrections and we were able to ask him for help anytime we wanted.
He wasn't too strict and had realistic expectations of students.
He was really knowledgable.
I liked his analogies
Very knowledgable.
The positive attitude, always in a good mood.
Very knowledgable teacher
Answered most of the questions we had on the quizzes and was always available to help clarify theories and certain aspects of history
His extensive knowledge about politics
Inter student discussions. Good ta's.
He also encourage us to think about the question from different perspectives.
very knowledgable
He's very willing to explain things to you about the curriculum or course assignments.
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Sometimes lectures went too deep into another topic, straying from the core things that this class should be teaching.
The simulation exercise. Could have been better i feel.
Dr. Chadwick often times goes off on tangents and so it becomes a little difficult to take notes on the lecture. I think it would be helpful if a visual aid was utilized during lectures such as a powerpoint presentation.
He had a hard time understanding student concerns
HE rambles and it is very hard to understand what he is talking about. Often times he goes off on large tangents and it takes an entire 50-minute class for him to explain the answer to one person's question that should talk no longer than 10 minutes.
He does not have his class we'll structured and his lectures can be hard to follow since he doesn't have power points or main objectives that he points out.
Sometimes...we don't get all the information we need. Hence the questions.
Lectures were often hard to follow. Chadwick likes to lecture the entire class, which makes it easy to zone out and miss some of the information.
During our "simulation" project he was somewhat unorganized.
The class was a bit unorganized, but the topic was interesting.
Nothing
He sometimes mishears what you say leading to misunderstandings.
Chadwick has tendencies to go off on rants that are somewhat abstract.
unorganized material
Never knew my grade throughout the course
Nothing
Some lack of structure in lectures. Sweet guy though.
None
a little unorganized
He can be a bit intimidating but only when you do something wrong, then he is quick to help you.

I wish we had more direction in the simulation project in class. Felt a bit lost and confused as to what needed to be done. Not until the last few times we simulated did the class understand what needed to be done. The TAs were great; they did whatever they could to help us out. I liked the class readings and the quizzes. The information was reinforced by the weekly quizzes, so they were helpful.
I liked this course.
Chadwick Is incredibly intelligent, but weekly testing has to go, it takes away from learning because kids skip to avoid testing.

I took this course because it is required for my POLS major.
It fulfilled my POLS 390 major requirement for my political science degree. Besides being a core requirement, I wanted to expand my understanding of proper approaches of developing field research. This course did just that. Professor Chadwick is extremely knowledgeable about how to conduct research and have added to my understanding of various research methods such as theory oriented, recreational, and empirical.
Required for POLS majors.
Fulfilled a focus designation; wanted to prepare for a class in my major cores and needed a better background of research design and analysis.
class was a major requirement and I was moderately interested prior to signing up, I am glad I did.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
The time put into explaining our research topics
The most valuable trait of Professor Chadwick's lecture technique is taking the time to criticize, develop, and reconstruct our assigned research project. Many courses I have taken before assigned a research project but did not take the initiative to discuss complications and controversies faced in tackling my thesis. By reserving time to discuss our projects independently, I felt that Professor Chadwick is interested in our projects and as a result, closed the student to teacher gap. Most professors are not capable for providing this sense of comfort. Moreover, Professor Chadwick thoroughly explained each concept without leaving any questionable concerns. For instance, there was a quiz that a large majority of the class performed poorly. Professor Chadwick reserved the our next scheduled lecture to explain the concept in a different light which was extremely helpful as I myself have read the chapter numerous times and could not grasp the concept. I have never had a professor so passionate about political science studies and have inspired me to think politically about various aspects such as how the distribution of power stirs domestic and international tension, how political realities shape our interests and value, and how we can formulate the possible outcomes of elections, campaigns, and survey studies.
He has knowledge about this course.
Prof. Chadwick was very helpful during office hours.
he is almost too smart for his own good
.
What I found what was most valuable about professor Chadwick was his adverse knowledge and experience in all types of genres obviously including a very large amount pertaining to political sciences and his class material. Any question the students have he will answer, and give examples for your better understanding. since I attended every class you hear him give examples to students in many classes. Also, the quiz corrections are a vital learning tool that really help you learn the material since you are learning from the questions that you answered wrong on the quiz/test.
An endless amount of information, extremely knowledgeable
His character is very expressive making learning fun !
Very attentive and very knowledgeable.
helpful in moving dicussions along

nothing, this class needs structure
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
The tangents
There is not much that I don't find helpful about Professor Chadwick. If I were to name one, I would suggest that Professor Chadwick use more slides for his lectures because there are times I would need a visual display of some abstract concepts. That is not to say Professor Chadwick did not use slides, but it was occasional.
He goes off topic.
Nothing this is a difficult subject and Prof. Chadwick is brilliant, and very well versed in all aspects of political research, analysis and design.
he is almost too smart for his own good, would sometimes confuse with quiz questions and responses
.
the least thing that I found valuable about professor Chadwick was that sometimes I would get lost in an example or story simple because of the length of the story being extensive.
Sometimes disorganized
He is deaf.
NA.
Goes off on tangents way too often
the lecture, and the quiz, also the book didnt help with the research paper

Great Professor. I would recommend this class to anyone who seeking to further their understanding on how to conduct field research. Overall, it was an enjoyable course that challenged my own thinking how international disputes arise.
A difficult course; not for everyone, anyone with complaints should have made office hours with him to clarify any questions about subject matter, course material. He was very helpful during office hours.

Besides requirement, Chadwick is the only one who offers courses (night) for the daytime working grad student. At times, in terms of possible courses, there just does'nt seem to be a fit. It is only coincidence that Chadwick is such a great instructor.
It is a course offered in my major field of study
I took this course because it was required course to complete the Ph.D. program. It was required in the sense that there are not many courses offered that fit my dissertation topic and I really enjoy learning from this professor. I would definitely take a course from this instructor again.

Many years of valuable experience and a seemingly bottomless well of mental intellect. Just when you think of a solution Chadwick has one or more you'd never think of.
He knows the course content very well
This professor has the ability to unify large concepts and provide concrete examples about the material covered within each course.
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
That is impossible to answer. Chadwick is there for anyone in need, he will go above and beyond if needed.
Sometimes deviating from the main point of discussion
At times it seems that he would tell long stories that were valuable and relational to class content but were long.

The department should make available a larger variety of Chadwick taught courses in the graduate level. Chadwick, in my opinion, is the jewel and flagship instructor of the university. He is everything still right with the university when all else sometimes goes wrong.
I would recommend that this course be made one of the required courses to take in graduate school (Political Sci). It proves to be more helpful then the other courses offered and Prof Chadwick is very well versed in what he teaches. So i highly recommend this course.

Needed an elective
POLS major requirement and it fit my schedule
I took it for my Poli sci Major
required political science class
Political science major requirement
Because I was interested in the topic; I originally wanted to take an international law class but it didn't fit with my schedule therefore I took this class for the global topic.
It fulfilled a focus designation, I don't quite remember which one it is to be honest though.
It fulfilled an upper division elective credit and it fit perfectly into my schedule
Elective met requirements.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
His knowledge about the subject
The course work and extra credit. He allows room for error, only if the student can provide the work to correct the wrong answers, which is a good method for learning.
His lectures are awesome!
He related the theories and things we discussed to current events
Knew the material very well, I liked that he answered questions people put on the back of their quizzes, the simulation was helpful in understanding and implementing the theories we learned.
He is very knowledgeable about the topic and always available to help us to better understand the topics he taught.
He was understanding and tried to pick are brains about certain subjects to think outside the box.
That he likes the subject matter
Consistent improvements of course grades.
He is very intelligent and wants his students to do well in his class.
Allowed the students to correct quizzes
He would explain some points in the books that were confusing or hard to understand.
If you make a mistake you are able to learn about your mistake, yet if you explain to him on how you learned from your mistake then the point is given back
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
His teaching style of straight forward lecturing is not exactly engaging/
Not to be offensive, but he is aging. His grasp with engaging the students and presenting it in a way that makes the students want to work is low. He does give content and sources which are very useful toward understanding the content, but the lectures feel droning. Also while he uploads revisions to the syllabus, he does not debrief his TAs so they barely know what to do, and he does not give clear enough instructions in a timely fashion.
Nothing
Working on the simulation was pointless because most people weren't even there to attend class making it 2-3 people per country, sometimes not even representing a country.
Sometimes he would make it difficult to grasp what he was lecturing about because it was very dense material especially for it being my first and only politics class.
He sometimes goes off on a tangent and gets off topic
Doesn't communicate well.
Concept were difficult for me to understand. He gives too long of lectures.
everything was valuable
Time allocation
the least valuable aspect thing about Chadwick would be that he talks and gives so much information that sometimes he loses the crowd. Knows an abundant amount of information about the subject manner.

Needs to explain the parameters of the simulation prior to beginning simulation
See above.
I loved the simulation project but next time make more groups.
Dr.Chadwick is very knowledgeable and i enjoyed his class.
Very dense material and could be hard to grasp all the knowledge of the course if it's not your major or haven't taken any politic classes in the past.
Getting old.
great, fun course!
While I appreciate his lectures, there were times during our simulations when I would have wanted more time to negotiate. Many times our negotiations were about to bear fruit when we would be cut off. I feel that better management of time would allow students to go deeper into what goes into negotiating with other countries. I also felt that the simulations were the only time students were actually wanting to be active and participate in discussions. More learning was done in these group activities than through lectures.
Good teacher enjoyed his class and learning from my mistakes

Political science major requirement
This course was required for my major.
I took this course because it's requirement for my major.
This was a required course for POLS 390, and it interested me as to how Political Scientists derive conclusions from the models they create regarding questions pertaining to political questions.
Requirement for POLS major and fit into my schedule
Statistics and politics
It fulfilled a requirement.
Political science minor
It fulfilled my political science pols390 requirement.
The reason to why I have chosen to attend this class is due to the requirements needed for a political science degree.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Student oriented
What I found most helpful about Mr. Chadwick was that he knew how to simplify the more complex, mathematical applications, into a more understandable form.
I find Richard Chadwick valuable with the way he teaches. He's very helpful with helping the students with research papers.
He has a massive wealth of knowledge regarding a lot of political issues and keeps very up to date regarding current events.
His love for teaching and having the students do well on test and quizzes
Everything
Chadwick has a wealth of knowledge and experience, unfortunately this wasn't always communicated efficiently. The ability to make up tests and quizzes was helpful and demonstrated the importance of understanding concepts instead of taking tests well.
Always challenges me to think deeply and has a lot of thought provoking lectures
The correlation between political research and research models.
What I found valuable is that Prof. Chadwick always wanted to make sure that the class understood the material. He was able to help each student individually to construct their research design. He was also able to mention other political theorist and recommended several books.
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
None
What I feel that Mr. Chadwick could have improved on throughout the course was have homework assignments for the final essay throughout the semester to have the class practice the analysis techniques in their own essays. This would allow the class to form a more general structure according to the class materials in the essay and make it easier for the students to ask Mr. Chadwick for help in modifying them.
None
Slightly disorganized.
Not having a course outline
Almost everybody in the class did not know what was expected of them and did not understand the class. Many found office hours unhelpful and information unclear. The syllabus did not go past the first week. For students who plan on actually doing political inquiry and analysis, do not take this class. It will not help you.
N/A
What I found least valuable about the course is not having a detailed outline of the semester schedule on the course syllabus.
While some subject matter seemed to be discussed in more than one class session, it was still necessary.

Prof. Chadwick's is an eccentric instructor and has a vast knowledge and experience in politics. He always tries to include additional information that is not part of the text.

It's an upper elective that ties into my business major
I am majoring in Political Science and interested in IR. i like this class since the it is short so that i can concentrate on the lecture better.
It fulfilled a major requirement
Thought it would be interesting
I chose this class to fulfill my POLS315 requirement for my Political Science requirement.
This was one of the accepted electives to fulfill my curriculum for International Business.
POLS requirements and interest in the topic
related to major
I took this course because I was planning to major in international relations and needed a brief introduction to it.
I chose to take this course because it fulfilled one of my major requirements.
Relates to international economics... But not really.
I took this course because the subject seemed interesting and to fulfill my UD credit requirements for graduation.
minor requirement for another department
Just because I've never taken a political science course before and this course did not require any pre-requisites.
Political Science Major requirement
I was just interested in international relations although my major and minor is not related to pols. I thought this class would be good for me to learn general ideas of international relations and i learnt even details, too.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
He's super knowledgeable on the subject
The simulation was really helpful. I could think beyond the domestic level of politics and consider some foreign policies in realistic ways.
He is very passionate about the subject and had many examples
N/A
Professor Chadwick is very knowledgeable, and seems to really love teaching. If you have any questions concerning an assignment, or need anything clarified he is always willing to help you out.
His great knowledge of the topics.
lots of knowledge
Chadwick was really knowledgeable about the subject matter and always appreciated questions.
He was very knowledgeable in the subject matter
The amount of knowledge he possesses.
He is a funny guy that knows his stuff! I liked that he was flexible with taking quizzes late especially since there were quizzes every week. At first I was a little scared about having a quiz every week, but I actually liked it because I was being tested about the materials from that week so the material was still fresh in my head.
he was helpful and loved to answer questions
He really cares about his students.
Professor Chadwick made it sure to clear the air of any questions by providing a section of the class to answer proposed questions on the previous quiz. Professor Chadwick also provided great insight by asking a question, stating a historic counterexample, then relating it to contemporary politics.
He can explain IR theories in very clearly with examples. I really liked how he used the book, "Why nations go wars" to give us authentic examples of how IR theories were or were not applied.
The questions that we were able to ask on the back of our quizzes --- I found it valuable that he took the time to answer them during a class period and go over parts of the lecture that people found to be confusing or needed extra clarification.
He is a very knowledgable expert. He is willing to explain and answer questions.
What I found most valuable and helpful about Chadwick is how he try his best to teach the class in a certain way for us to understand and learn from it and also makes us write questions that we want to ask about a anything that we have discuss in class.
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
No attendance makes it so that you don't want to go to class
writing questions made the course little bit confusing. so many off-topics. some were related to the lecture and some were not.
Sometimes I don't feel my questions get fully answered.
The continual talking and referencing to questions that people only put on their quizzes to earn an extra point. The also reference of material that was way above the heads of most of the students.
N/A
no powerpoints
Lecture style schedule can be very boring.
Sometimes he would go on and on about a particular question and seems to be too fixated on lecturing endlessly.
He was very scattered. I found lectures to be confusing and often times I left class wondering what I learned. The texts that he chose for the course were excellent. I learned mostly from the text.
His tangents.
it was hard to listen to lecture with our more visuals
He answered questions for a long time during class that were often irrelevant to the subject matter.
Often times, Professor Chadwick would leave 10-15 minutes left of the class period to complete an exam. It was a difficult thing to accomplish with a substantial amount of time to critically think and answer to the best of my ability.
There were a lot of tangents but in the long run it helped broaden my knowledge, even if it wasn't exactly related to the chapters we were discussing at the moment.
Nothing. He's awesome.

He allowed us to ask any questions we wanted.
his years of experience, approachability, and relaxed teaching style
Prof. Chadwick challenged me intellectually by providing different interpretations of political theories in situations and examples that were very engaging. He also made sure to answer any questions or concerns we had and addressed them thoroughly. It was very reassuring to have a professor that was willing to discuss and explain theories in very interesting ways.
Dick Chadwick is a genius!!! Upon entering any classroom with any amount of students from 3-20 you have an instant "political think-tank" because of this man. His forum is immense, insightful, and thought-provoking! He keeps at pace with current political news and events daily or maybe up to the hour. He is a "jewel" in the U.H. system and lacks due recognition and campus-wide notoriety. I firmly believe Chadwick is the top-man compared to political scientists in Yale, Harvard, Oxford, or any other reputable political science schools on God's green planet. Any high-level government politician should ALWAYS have highly secured consultation lunch with Chadwick before speaking or doing anything else around town,i.e., Gore, Obama.
He knows his subject very well and he is very passionate about it. This passion and knowledge was pass on to his students.
He genuinely cares and has a simple and unique approach to untangling complicated concepts. He is open to helping students with their problems and is very approachable.
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
He didn't give feedback on all papers.
he never brought food to class for his students :/ *tear
N/A Prof. Chadwick was very helpful and is a valuable professor to have.
Nothing!, if you or anyone else knows tell me ?
Student participation felt very forced, and when Professor Chadwick tried to encourage more students to speak up, he often overrode them before they had a chance to utter their thoughts. His research approaches/advice feel very narrow, inflexible, and sometimes dated. The course materials felt very flat and uninspiring.

I would strongly recommend this course to other students who want to pursue a Masters in Political Science as an introduction to the Political Science department. I also want to thank Prof. Chadwick for being very patient with a student who does not have a strong political science background but has a very strong interest in international relations (me).
Courses in academia in this day and age don't get any better than Chadwick's brand. In all these decades Chadwick has not lost a step, he only gets better and valuable as time goes on. Other old-timers in the department as well as new professors cannot even get close to "tying the laces" of Chadwick's shoes. He is the BEST there ever will be! TOP-MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How the course materials tied together to produce an overarching theme felt very puzzling and confused. I did appreciate Professor Chadwick's flexibility when it came to papers.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Richard Chadwick was incredibly well-informed and was able to easily convey complex ideas about international relations in way that makes it understandable to those with little to no background in the subject. He encouraged students to think critically about the material and was more focused on providing a quality education rather than having students compete for a certain grade point average.
He forms the class to help students get a good grade and allows them to slip up to a certain extent while offering chances to get ahead
He knows the material really well.
Helped to foster a well-rounded understanding of the subject matter.
Knew the course material very well.
It is really hard to rate professor Chadwick, his experience and his knowledge goes beyond anything any student can ask for. So much, that his lectures and quizzes sometimes do not meet up. Although personally I don't see a problem, trying to make a quiz based off what he has to say seems almost impossible.
He really wants you to succeed, the course material can be challenging but his teaching style sparks an interest in the subject.
He was very knowledgable.
I enjoyed the text "Why nations go to war" and the quizzes every week enabled me to try and keep up with the course work and schedule.
his deep expierence and knowledge of subject matter
He was a smart guy
His character. His enthusiasm. His authority on the subject.
Professor Chadwick is very smart and professional.
The lectures and quizzes were most valuable and helpful.
He brought the experience of a long career to the course. His understanding of the material was a great help, he was able to explain complex ideas in simple ways and through his experiences.
Funny, knowledgeable, and excited about the material.
Professor Chadwick has effective teaching methods that get the students involved and give them a hands on, social experience which allows students as close as they can get to a first hand experience. Great teacher. Very knowledgeable.
He is incredibly experienced in the subject. His expertise is something that I feel really lucky to be able to take advantage of. He encourages students to learn their own views and perspectives.
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Nothing comes to mind.
He was a little brash in class sometimes, but it was not a major issue
He is very hard to approach and is unorganized. When we would ask him for written explanations of what he wanted for papers and things like that, he would get really upset with us and tell us to listen in class. It was hard to ask him for help.
Snappy attiutude. And lecture would tend to drag on without making much process
Quizzes, maybe this should be turned into a written based class. Quizzes are just to hard in this class. Especially because many of the theories and ideas are very abstract.
His personality can be a little abrasive at times.
He was very vague. When I asked my classmates if they knew what was going on, they were as confused as I was.
n/a
He's pretty old and is hard of hearing. He has a short fuse and a quick temper
N/A
He was just perfect professor.
N/A
sometimes questions were not answered clearly.
Flexible, approachable, and practical. Funny and gets excited about every aspect of the course. He enjoys teaching the course.
I would have liked to gain a better grasp on global politics but I think that might be something that I need to practice more rather than just learning it for one semester.

Excellent course. Would recommend it to my peers.
Thank you Professor Chadwick
The simulation was a great experience and should definitely remain part of the course. I liked the way it was run as well.
Especially liked the Simulation. However, the simulation needed more guidance and rules.
Question number twenty is pointless and shouldn't be in this survey.

Ty
He is very professional and has a superior knowledge on politics.
the only complaint I have is the short class time. classes were too short (50min) to get really deep into the material. Some of the material warranted long classes to grasp. A twice a week meeting time would be better or a once a week meet up would be better still.
Awesome teacher!

I am very interested in learning about leadership because I would like a career in politics. I signed up for this class purely out of interest. Not out of need.
It seemed interesting.
Pols Major.
I chose this course as a part of my required course requirements.
I wanted to take more courses within my major.

To gain leadership skills
I wanted a focus on political leadership. I wanted to learn more in depth about political leaders within our society and history.

I choose this course because i needed for my electives.
Believed the knowledge would benefit my personal goals.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
He seems to know a lot about his subject and current events.
He likes to talk after class about the course content.
His immense knowledge and experience. I personally love Chadwick's style of lecture, especially this semester. The circle style class discussions really allow for intellectual dialogues and forces students to engage.
His life experiences that could be related to the course subject matter. Professor Chadwick has offered real life experience to us as students to show us how adaptive leadership can be used and to better explain the materials in the course we were learning.
He has a lot of experience and uses great references to back up his lectures. he is also willing to share those references freely with the students.
He knew the material and he wanted everyone's opinion about the topic discussed. Even if it is in writing or said in class.
Lectures and reading were really helpful
He had a good understanding and many sources to refer to. He also allows us to make up our quizzes which shows that he intends for us to learn something rather than memorizing it for a grade.
I found that Professor Chadwick was very knowledgeable on the course content. He is very helpful to the students and is always available to talk to. He gives numerous ways of succeeding in class. Professor Chadwick really breaks down the course material in a way that students can grasp the concepts.
This professor was very knowledgeful and
The thing that I found most valuable and helpful about Richard Chadwick is the way he teaches the class.
Allowing us to write down questions after the quiz which he addressed the following class.
He gave a solid explanation for any question that I might of had about the subject at hand.
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
I wish he would have used power points. I am a visual learner, and taking 18 credits this semester. It is difficult for me to recall all of the readings constantly because I need to refer to a memory of an image. PowerPoint would have helped with my success in this class. As well as, better understand course content.
I feel like I am the only person in the class that can interpret his Chadwickian phraseology. I understand his points but conflicts arise in class discussions that, from my view, happen due to a lack of mutual understanding. Many times, Dr. Chadwick and a student are trying to say the same thing, but they don't understand each other.
Nothing
I am not sure how to answer this question. Please consider revising it.

Talk a little too much at time. But it wasn't a big problem.
I have taken a couple other classes with Professor Chadwick and notice that he likes to use books on theory (i.e. Viotti and Kaupi and Heifetz). Although these books are good for their subject matters, they are often times not related to the real world, they are just theory. I suggest that he takes those various model and theories and show how they apply to today's society.
The Book 13 bankers
None
Students were not asked to apply the models. We would have a better understanding if there was more discussion on the models rather then lecture.
He sometimes asked us to read before answering a question i may have had.

I feel very strongly about having PowerPoint. I feel the class would have benefitted from it. Overall, Professor Chadwick is a really nice professor, caring professor. He gives us opportunities to make up quizzes if we missed them, and allows us to correct mistakes.
This was one of those courses where I feel like I'm not learning anything about being a better leader; but I see myself being better at leading. it is easy to give up on the class and not pay attention, but it is worth it to go to class and participate.
No matter what any of your colleagues say, keep teaching! I will always stand up for this mans integrity and effectiveness as a teacher.
I wish we read the adaptive leadership book first and then moved on to the other books. It wold have been fun to analyse the other books with the adaptive leadership book freshly in my knowledge.
class had good people in it
Great teacher, his methods just need minor tweaks and adjustments.
The book 13 banks made me feel like I was in a economic class not a political leadership class
Circle discussion would have been useful earlier on in the course. Having quizzes on Wednesdays might motivate the students to do the readings before class discussion; by having quizzes on Fridays students are more likely to put off the reading until Wednesday and Thursday.
he could be more engaging with students

He explained many of the important terms we needed clearly and gave us a summary before hand.
Dr. Chadwick possesses a tremendous amount of knowledge about the material he covers in this course, and was able to answer any questions that students had regarding his lectures. Honestly Dr. Chadwick has one of the better class structures that I've experienced here at UH.
I really liked the book Why Nations go to War. It was very informative and a new perspective
3x3 Global Drills
Professor Chadwick was very passionate and allowed students to do written work to make up points missed on quizzes. This was great because it both helped the students to learn the material and improve their grade which decreased the amount of stress that the students felt.
I really benefited from the option to make corrections to the quizzes
class discussions
Learning about future issues that are rising up was valuable.
The lectures was most valuable and the group discussions. His lectures were understandable and great to listen to. The group discussions were based on his lecture and/or a question he gave out for the students to ponder on and discuss about. In addition, he allowed us the opportunity to recommend suggestions to what could better the class discussions and/or his lectures.
I enjoyed both required books for this course and thought that in-class discussions and lectures were very insightful.
The readings and weekly quizes really challenged me
The way he quizes, it based of actual knowledge
I liked Professor Chadwick's style of lecture. He always related what we were reading to the course and could easily explain the relevence of the texts we would read.
Professor Chadwick is a wealth of information, as are many students as he has pointed out, and being able to listen to his perspective, take and understanding of various theories, concepts, and events is eye opening and inspiring.

The 3X3 drills need to be organized better. I think it would work better if you did a session where the groups could talk to their team members before they get up and present to the class.
Doing the 3x3 drill during the second half of the semester didn't do anything to enhance my learning
N/A
Martin Schwab's 3x3 global drills was somewhat poorly planned and not explained thoroughly so students had to guess at what they were doing throughout that portion of the course
Although interesting...I did not feel incredibly stimulated from the mock exercise. At times I felt extremely confused on what was going on...but overall the exercise was interesting and got me to think of politics in a completely different light...so my suggestion would be to have clearer directions for how the exercise should be conducted...maybe make a recording of a previous class and then show that recording to future classes to show how the exercise is conducted.
the 3x3 drill
NONE
I thought the 3x3 Global Drill was very invaluable and served little to no purpose as it pertains to this course.
3x3 drills
The simulation groups
I know the class ended up spending a lot of time on it, and no offense to Martin, however the 3x3 group activity felt lacking. I understand the focus and purpose of the simulation but besides a couple of the simulations the 3x3 activity was not engaging and became monotonous. This could have been because over half of the groups had the same topic. The 3x3 activity also seemed to drag on quite a bit and I felt it was cutting in to hearing what Prof. Chadwick had to offer us through lecture. The smaller group discussions we had early on, with Q and A right afterward felt more fruitful. Don't get me wrong, I do believe thinking long term, global problem and solution drills are good but as a class I didn't think we got very far in truly thinking and working together to come up with possible solutions. Sadly I do not hav a better idea of how to do this.

I think more of the 3x3 global drills should take place! However, maybe instead of focusing the drills on what the paper was on, present a question/hot topic to each group for a global impromptu debate... Pass out a paper to the class containing 3 possible topics of choice, allow each group to decide what their topic is out of the 3 (don't allow more than two groups to cover one topic), and have them research actual policies/laws regarding those topics, as well as problems/solutions. Something like that, that involves not just solutions to global problems, but specific ways in which the policies and laws regarding those issues can be created/adjusted/abolished/etc... Overall, awesome course!
I would have enjoyed this course a lot more if it focused only on Professor Chadwick's lectures and course material. The 3x3 global drills took away from his material and made students less passionate about the class.
thanks for a great semester!
I liked his style of teaching
This is a great course and it really makes you think and wonder what we are doing, why are we doing it, and so on.

EVERYTHING! He is incredibly smart, it blew me away. Great professor, great instructor, good with letting you make up tests but making those quiz's hard keeps you on your toes and studying! Goes off on rants (which I love) and brings in knowledge from textbooks, his own experiences and current events. the class is much boring because of the lectures....it has to come up with some class activities base on the lectures or the readings of the weeks
Should have picked a better book for the International Relations Theory.
Would have been even greater if the class involved "model UN" where students can debate issues of great importance as they step into the shoes of a particular country's ambassador. Also, lectures tend to go off on a tangent and need to focus specifically on the dynamics of these international relations, as well as the empirical data.

I got to see learning from a different perspective. As a TI you are able to see what students are struggling with and what aspects they are excelling in. I really enjoyed it.
Both texts were great. Professor Chadwick is vary knowledgeable about the subject.
His style of teaching is very different and really entertaining.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I wish there was a bit more interaction with the class, but I understand it is hard to allow 6 TI's to participate all the time in the course of the semester.
Professor Chadwick dislikes criticism which means that when he makes claims that are wrong (like: the french revolution took place in 1789 not 1815 like he said in class) I don't feel like i can correct him without him getting defensive and angry.

The text, groupwork
reading a chapter a week and discussing it and hearing lecture on it was very valuable and effective because it was a good amount of reading yet not extremely demanding so everyone was able to do it. it was just right in workload, with journals readings and quizzes, challenging but not exhausting
Profesor Chadwick is very knowledgeable of 20th Century American foreign policy. I like how he expounded on major events.
The environment the instructor offered was conducive to learning yet laid back in a good way. The text offered in the course was very easy to read yet extremely comprehensive. Chadwick is a career educator who provides a very welcoming environment and lectures in a colloquial way that is "grandfatherly" like but it seems to be suited for a subject like American Foreign policy. Flexibility in assignments and a very free and open discourse was appreciated. Chadwick knows his subject matter very well and is a great asset to this institution.
When we had the debate on a simulation held in class about Foreign Aid Policy around the world.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?

Supplementing the textbook with some other reading material would be nice. The quizzes and exams could also be made to be a little more challenging. It would be nice to get some feedback on the weekly writing assignments or assign topics for the weekly writing assignment so that they may be used for a point for discussion in future classes.
I have taken three classes with this professor and it just doesn't make me feel weak to attend his lectures because he is an excellent instructor and very smart. Using all his knowlege in grasping the students to understand the concept of the materials and whatever it is presented in the course materials. With this i have strongly recommended Dr. Chadwick to be an excellent instructor.

Simulation activity and Lectures
The content when presented in charts and graphs and on board were well presented.
EVERY SINGLE CLASS IS VALUABLE.
The four required books. These books were wonderful application to not just class but life. I will keep these books for the rest of my life. Also i found a weekly write up to be effective. It keeps us (students) engaged to the course, week by week. It also calls for a moment of reflection, i feel too many times, the message just goes in one ear and out the other. With the requirement of a write up, your forced to sit down and contemplate the message, really soak up relevance and importance.
the book discussions
Books
I really thought that the book discussions were most valuable. It helped me understand the material and relate it to current issues. I also liked the group project at the end, it really gave a different perspective to the class and let us simulate real political topics.
The small group sessions & the lectures.
I like the readings the most. There was three books that were required readings but they were very interesting to read.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
None.
At times unorganized, unstructured.
Class was very disorganized, content very hard to grasp without being a specialist in the field.
NONE THAT I CAN THINK OFF.
Your lectures that merely paraphrased the assigned readings. I felt that at the beginning of the semester you talked about things outside of the parameter of the books we were reading. However that could be because you set the foundation for the rest of the course, with topics of Stephen Covey, and Maslow, and ruler of China. Though, as the semester progressed, I felt most of the lectures talked about the readings, that most of us, read the night before. I enjoyed when you talked about other issues and make relevance to the readings and/or life in general, i.e. stress bucket.
discussions with the group
I didn't think that any part of the course was not valuable.
The lack of a solid & firm schedule. It seemed to change and it was hard to keep track of what was needed to be done for each week.
Group activities. Most students were opinionated to the point that they overpowered those that were quite. It didnt feel like a true legislative session.

Needs to be more organized, easier to understand for college students, otherwise teacher is good and course structure is good.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Professor Chadwick's 40 plus years of thinking about the theory, data and culture and corresponding science, praxis and philosophy of American foreign policy.
All aspects were valuable.
The readings were outstanding. Class discussions were interesting and enjoyable. Professor Chadwick is incredibly knowledgeable, genuinely cares about his students, and clearly enjoys teaching.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Some lectures and presentations were clearer to understand than others. As with all classes in this department and perhaps in all academe, more deliberation among an international student body, especially in a seminar setting guided by the expert, the professor might benefit all involved exponentially. Of course, international students have a responsibility to contribute more substantively and imaginatively to the discussions that do take place rather than the usual manner of deferring to or passively resisting their U.S. counterparts.
