I chose this class to fulfill my POLS315 requirement for my Political Science requirement.
related to major
Political Science Major requirement
This was one of the accepted electives to fulfill my curriculum for International Business.
I took this course because I was planning to major in international relations and needed a brief introduction to it.
I chose to take this course because it fulfilled one of my major requirements.
It fufilled a requirement.
It's an upper elective that ties into my business major
POLS requirements and interest in the topic
I took this course because the subject seemed interesting and to fulfill my UD credit requirements for graduation.
Relates to international economics... But not really.
minor requirement for another department
Just because I've never taken a political science course before and this course did not require any pre-requisites.
I was just interested in international relations although my major and minor is not related to pols. I thought this class would be good for me to learn general ideas of international relations and i learnt even details, too.
Major requirement
I am majoring in Political Science and interested in IR. i like this class since the it is short so that i can concentrate on the lecture better.
It fulfilled a major requirement
I choose to take this course because it is a requirement for my major.
Thought it would be interesting

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Professor Chadwick is very knowledgeable, and seems to really love teaching. If you have any questions concerning an assignment, or need anything clarified he is always willing to help you out.
lots of knowledge
Professor Chadwick made it sure to clear the air of any questions by providing a section of the class to answer proposed questions on the previous quiz. Professor Chadwick also provided great insight by asking a question, stating a historic counterexample, then relating it to contemporary politics.
Chadwick was really knowledgeable about the subject matter and always appreciated questions.
He was very knowledgeable in the subject matter
He is a very knowledgable expert. He is willing to explain and answer questions.
He's super knowledgeable on the subject
His great knowledge of the topics.
He is a funny guy that knows his stuff! I liked that he was flexible with taking quizzes late especially since there were quizzes every week. At first I was a little scared about having a quiz every week, but I actually liked it because I was being tested about the materials from that week so the material was still fresh in my head.
The amount of knowledge he possesses.
he was helpful and loved to answer questions
He really cares about his students.
He can explain IR theories in very clearly with examples. I really liked how he used the book, "Why nations go wars" to give us authentic examples of how IR theories were or were not applied.
The questions that we were able to ask on the back of our quizzes --- I found it valuable that he took the time to answer them during a class period and go over parts of the lecture that people found to be confusing or needed extra clarification.
The simulation was really helpful. I could think beyond the domestic level of politics and consider some foreign policies in realistic ways.
He is very passionate about the subject and had many examples
What I found most valuable and helpful about Chadwick is how he try his best to teach the class in a certain way for us to understand and learn from it and also makes us write questions that we want to ask about a anything that we have discuss in class.
N/A
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
N/A
no powerpoints
Often times, Professor Chadwick would leave 10-15 minutes left of the class period to complete an exam. It was a difficult thing to accomplish with a substantial amount of time to critically think and answer to the best of my ability.
Sometimes he would go on and on about a particular question and seems to be too fixated on lecturing endlessly.
He was very scattered. I found lectures to be confusing and often times I left class wondering what I learned. The texts that he chose for the course were excellent. I learned mostly from the text.
Lecture style schedule can be very boring.
Nothing. He's awesome.
No attendance makes it so that you don't want to go to class
His tangents.
it was hard to listen to lecture with our more visuals
He answered questions for a long time during class that were often irrelevant to the subject matter.
There were a lot of tangents but in the long run it helped broaden my knowledge, even if it wasn't exactly related to the chapters we were discussing at the moment.
writing questions made the course little bit confusing. so many off-topics. some were related to the lecture and some were not.
Sometimes I don't feel my questions get fully answered.
Nothing
The continual talking and referencing to questions that people only put on their quizzes to earn an extra point. The also reference of material that was way above the heads of most of the students.

Subject matter
Iʻve taken Prof Chadwick before and really enjoyed his class
Currently I'm very much interested in pursuing a Masters degree in Political Science with a focus on International Relations between the United States and Southeast Asia. I choose this course because it not only dealt with International relations but it would get my 'feet wet' into pursuing a Masters degree.
This course is a required course for M.A. degree.
I am just interested in International Relations and I really liked the time of the class as well. I probably wouldn't have taken it if it were during the day.

He knows his subject very well and he is very passionate about it. This passion and knowledge was pass on to his students.
his years of experience, approachability, and relaxed teaching style
Prof. Chadwick challenged me intellectually by providing different interpretations of political theories in situations and examples that were very engaging. He also made sure to answer any questions or concerns we had and addressed them thoroughly. It was very reassuring to have a professor that was willing to discuss and explain theories in very interesting ways.
Dick Chadwick is a genius!!! Upon entering any classroom with any amount of students from 3-20 you have an instant "political think-tank" because of this man. His forum is immense, insightful, and thought-provoking! He keeps at pace with current political news and events daily or maybe up to the hour. He is a "jewel" in the U.H. system and lacks due recognition and campus-wide notoriety. I firmly believe Chadwick is the top-man compared to political scientists in Yale, Harvard, Oxford, or any other reputable political science schools on God's green planet. Any high-level government politician should ALWAYS have highly secured consultation lunch with Chadwick before speaking or doing anything else around town,i.e., Gore, Obama.
He allowed us to ask any questions we wanted.
He genuinely cares and has a simple and unique approach to untangling complicated concepts. He is open to helping students with their problems and is very approachable.
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
he never brought food to class for his students :/ *tear
N/A Prof. Chadwick was very helpful and is a valuable professor to have.
Nothing!, if you or anyone else knows tell me ?
He didn't give feedback on all papers.
Student participation felt very forced, and when Professor Chadwick tried to encourage more students to speak up, he often overrode them before they had a chance to utter their thoughts. His research approaches/advice feel very narrow, inflexible, and sometimes dated. The course materials felt very flat and uninspiring.

21. Other comments:
I would strongly recommend this course to other students who want to pursue a Masters in Political Science as an introduction to the Political Science department. I also want to thank Prof. Chadwick for being very patient with a student who does not have a strong political science background but has a very strong interest in international relations (me).
Courses in academia in this day and age don't get any better than Chadwick's brand. In all these decades Chadwick has not lost a step, he only gets better and valuable as time goes on. Other old-timers in the department as well as new professors cannot even get close to "tying the laces" of Chadwick's shoes. He is the BEST there ever will be! TOP-MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How the course materials tied together to produce an overarching theme felt very puzzling and confused. I did appreciate Professor Chadwick's flexibility when it came to papers.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
It is really hard to rate professor Chadwick, his experience and his knowledge goes beyond anything any student can ask for. So much, that his lectures and quizzes sometimes do not meet up. Although personally I don't see a problem, trying to make a quiz based off what he has to say seems almost impossible.
Funny, knowledgeable, and excited about the material.
He really wants you to succeed, the course material can be challenging but his teaching style sparks an interest in the subject.
his deep expierence and knowledge of subject matter
He was very knowledgable.
I enjoyed the text "Why nations go to war" and the quizzes every week enabled me to try and keep up with the course work and schedule.
Helped to foster a well-rounded understanding of the subject matter.
The lectures and quizzes were most valuable and helpful.
Professor Chadwick is very smart and professional.
He brought the experience of a long career to the course. His understanding of the material was a great help, he was able to explain complex ideas in simple ways and through his experiences.
Professor Chadwick has effective teaching methods that get the students involved and give them a hands on, social experience which allows students as close as they can get to a first hand experience. Great teacher. Very knowledgeable.
Richard Chadwick was incredibly well-informed and was able to easily convey complex ideas about international relations in way that makes it understandable to those with little to no background in the subject. He encouraged students to think critically about the material and was more focused on providing a quality education rather than having students compete for a certain grade point average.
He forms the class to help students get a good grade and allows them to slip up to a certain extent while offering chances to get ahead
He is incredibly experienced in the subject. His expertise is something that I feel really lucky to be able to take advantage of. He encourages students to learn their own views and perspectives.
Knew the course material very well.
He was a smart guy
His character. His enthusiasm. His authority on the subject.
He knows the material really well.
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
Quizzes, maybe this should be turned into a written based class. Quizzes are just to hard in this class. Especially because many of the theories and ideas are very abstract.
Flexible, approachable, and practical. Funny and gets excited about every aspect of the course. He enjoys teaching the course.
His personality can be a little abrasive at times.
n/a
He was very vague. When I asked my classmates if they knew what was going on, they were as confused as I was.
N/A
He was just perfect professor.
sometimes questions were not answered clearly.
Nothing comes to mind.
He was a little brash in class sometimes, but it was not a major issue
I would have liked to gain a better grasp on global politics but I think that might be something that I need to practice more rather than just learning it for one semester.
Snappy attiutude. And lecture would tend to drag on without making much process
He's pretty old and is hard of hearing. He has a short fuse and a quick temper
N/A
He is very hard to approach and is unorganized. When we would ask him for written explanations of what he wanted for papers and things like that, he would get really upset with us and tell us to listen in class. It was hard to ask him for help.

Awesome teacher!
Question number twenty is pointless and shouldn't be in this survey.
He is very professional and has a superior knowledge on politics.
the only complaint I have is the short class time. classes were too short (50min) to get really deep into the material. Some of the material warranted long classes to grasp. A twice a week meeting time would be better or a once a week meet up would be better still.
Excellent course. Would recommend it to my peers.
Thank you Professor Chadwick
Especially liked the Simulation. However, the simulation needed more guidance and rules.

The simulation was a great experience and should definitely remain part of the course. I liked the way it was run as well.

Pols Major.
POLS elective requirement
I choose this course because i needed for my electives.
I wanted a focus on political leadership. I wanted to learn more in depth about political leaders within our society and history.
To gain leadership skills
Believed the knowledge would benefit my personal goals.
I am very interested in learning about leadership because I would like a career in politics. I signed up for this class purely out of interest. Not out of need.
I wanted to take more courses within my major.
I took this class as an elective.
It sounded interesting and as someone interest in running for political office someday I wanted leadership skills
It seemed interesting.
I chose this course as a part of my required course requirements.
It filled my electives requirements for my political science major. It seemed like an interesting subject.

13. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor?
His immense knowledge and experience. I personally love Chadwick's style of lecture, especially this semester. The circle style class discussions really allow for intellectual dialogues and forces students to engage.
He knew the material and he wanted everyone's opinion about the topic discussed. Even if it is in writing or said in class.
The thing that I found most valuable and helpful about Richard Chadwick is the way he teaches the class.
He had a good understanding and many sources to refer to. He also allows us to make up our quizzes which shows that he intends for us to learn something rather than memorizing it for a grade.
Lectures and reading were really helpful
Allowing us to write down questions after the quiz which he addressed the following class.
He seems to know a lot about his subject and current events.
He has a lot of experience and uses great references to back up his lectures. he is also willing to share those references freely with the students.
I found that Professor Chadwick was very knowledgeable on the course content. He is very helpful to the students and is always available to talk to. He gives numerous ways of succeeding in class. Professor Chadwick really breaks down the course material in a way that students can grasp the concepts.
This professor was very knowledgeful and
He likes to talk after class about the course content.
His life experiences that could be related to the course subject matter. Professor Chadwick has offered real life experience to us as students to show us how adaptive leadership can be used and to better explain the materials in the course we were learning.
He gave a solid explanation for any question that I might of had about the subject at hand.
14. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor?
none
None
Talk a little too much at time. But it wasn't a big problem.
Students were not asked to apply the models. We would have a better understanding if there was more discussion on the models rather then lecture.
I wish he would have used power points. I am a visual learner, and taking 18 credits this semester. It is difficult for me to recall all of the readings constantly because I need to refer to a memory of an image. PowerPoint would have helped with my success in this class. As well as, better understand course content.
I am not sure how to answer this question. Please consider revising it.
I have taken a couple other classes with Professor Chadwick and notice that he likes to use books on theory (i.e. Viotti and Kaupi and Heifetz). Although these books are good for their subject matters, they are often times not related to the real world, they are just theory. I suggest that he takes those various model and theories and show how they apply to today's society.
The Book 13 bankers
I feel like I am the only person in the class that can interpret his Chadwickian phraseology. I understand his points but conflicts arise in class discussions that, from my view, happen due to a lack of mutual understanding. Many times, Dr. Chadwick and a student are trying to say the same thing, but they don't understand each other.
Nothing
He sometimes asked us to read before answering a question i may have had.

No matter what any of your colleagues say, keep teaching! I will always stand up for this mans integrity and effectiveness as a teacher.
class had good people in it
Circle discussion would have been useful earlier on in the course. Having quizzes on Wednesdays might motivate the students to do the readings before class discussion; by having quizzes on Fridays students are more likely to put off the reading until Wednesday and Thursday.
I feel very strongly about having PowerPoint. I feel the class would have benefitted from it. Overall, Professor Chadwick is a really nice professor, caring professor. He gives us opportunities to make up quizzes if we missed them, and allows us to correct mistakes.
I wish we read the adaptive leadership book first and then moved on to the other books. It wold have been fun to analyse the other books with the adaptive leadership book freshly in my knowledge.
Great teacher, his methods just need minor tweaks and adjustments.
The book 13 banks made me feel like I was in a economic class not a political leadership class
This was one of those courses where I feel like I'm not learning anything about being a better leader; but I see myself being better at leading. it is easy to give up on the class and not pay attention, but it is worth it to go to class and participate.
he could be more engaging with students

5. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
He explained many of the important terms we needed clearly and gave us a summary before hand.
I really liked the book Why Nations go to War. It was very informative and a new perspective
Professor Chadwick is a wealth of information, as are many students as he has pointed out, and being able to listen to his perspective, take and understanding of various theories, concepts, and events is eye opening and inspiring.
Dr. Chadwick possesses a tremendous amount of knowledge about the material he covers in this course, and was able to answer any questions that students had regarding his lectures. Honestly Dr. Chadwick has one of the better class structures that I've experienced here at UH.
Professor Chadwick was very passionate and allowed students to do written work to make up points missed on quizzes. This was great because it both helped the students to learn the material and improve their grade which decreased the amount of stress that the students felt.
The way he quizes, it based of actual knowledge
I enjoyed both required books for this course and thought that in-class discussions and lectures were very insightful.
Learning about future issues that are rising up was valuable.
3x3 Global Drills
The lectures was most valuable and the group discussions. His lectures were understandable and great to listen to. The group discussions were based on his lecture and/or a question he gave out for the students to ponder on and discuss about. In addition, he allowed us the opportunity to recommend suggestions to what could better the class discussions and/or his lectures.
class discussions
I really benefited from the option to make corrections to the quizzes
The readings and weekly quizes really challenged me
I liked Professor Chadwick's style of lecture. He always related what we were reading to the course and could easily explain the relevence of the texts we would read.
6. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
N/A
The 3X3 drills need to be organized better. I think it would work better if you did a session where the groups could talk to their team members before they get up and present to the class.
I know the class ended up spending a lot of time on it, and no offense to Martin, however the 3x3 group activity felt lacking. I understand the focus and purpose of the simulation but besides a couple of the simulations the 3x3 activity was not engaging and became monotonous. This could have been because over half of the groups had the same topic. The 3x3 activity also seemed to drag on quite a bit and I felt it was cutting in to hearing what Prof. Chadwick had to offer us through lecture. The smaller group discussions we had early on, with Q and A right afterward felt more fruitful. Don't get me wrong, I do believe thinking long term, global problem and solution drills are good but as a class I didn't think we got very far in truly thinking and working together to come up with possible solutions. Sadly I do not hav a better idea of how to do this.
Martin Schwab's 3x3 global drills was somewhat poorly planned and not explained thoroughly so students had to guess at what they were doing throughout that portion of the course
3x3 drills
I thought the 3x3 Global Drill was very invaluable and served little to no purpose as it pertains to this course.

NONE
Doing the 3x3 drill during the second half of the semester didn't do anything to enhance my learning
the 3x3 drill
Although interesting...I did not feel incredibly stimulated from the mock exercise. At times I felt extremely confused on what was going on...but overall the exercise was interesting and got me to think of politics in a completely different light...so my suggestion would be to have clearer directions for how the exercise should be conducted...maybe make a recording of a previous class and then show that recording to future classes to show how the exercise is conducted.

This is a great course and it really makes you think and wonder what we are doing, why are we doing it, and so on.
I would have enjoyed this course a lot more if it focused only on Professor Chadwick's lectures and course material. The 3x3 global drills took away from his material and made students less passionate about the class.
I liked his style of teaching
I think more of the 3x3 global drills should take place! However, maybe instead of focusing the drills on what the paper was on, present a question/hot topic to each group for a global impromptu debate... Pass out a paper to the class containing 3 possible topics of choice, allow each group to decide what their topic is out of the 3 (don't allow more than two groups to cover one topic), and have them research actual policies/laws regarding those topics, as well as problems/solutions. Something like that, that involves not just solutions to global problems, but specific ways in which the policies and laws regarding those issues can be created/adjusted/abolished/etc... Overall, awesome course!
thanks for a great semester!

EVERYTHING! He is incredibly smart, it blew me away. Great professor, great instructor, good with letting you make up tests but making those quiz's hard keeps you on your toes and studying! 16. Other comments:
the class is much boring because of the lectures....it has to come up with some class activities base on the lectures or the readings of the weeks
Should have picked a better book for the International Relations Theory.
Would have been even greater if the class involved "model UN" where students can debate issues of great importance as they step into the shoes of a particular country's ambassador. Also, lectures tend to go off on a tangent and need to focus specifically on the dynamics of these international relations, as well as the empirical data.

His style of teaching is very different and really entertaining.

Both texts were great. Professor Chadwick is vary knowledgeable about the subject.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
Nothing.
I wish there was a bit more interaction with the class, but I understand it is hard to allow 6 TI's to participate all the time in the course of the semester.
Professor Chadwick dislikes criticism which means that when he makes claims that are wrong (like: the french revolution took place in 1789 not 1815 like he said in class) I don't feel like i can correct him without him getting defensive and angry.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
Profesor Chadwick is very knowledgeable of 20th Century American foreign policy. I like how he expounded on major events.
When we had the debate on a simulation held in class about Foreign Aid Policy around the world.
The text, groupwork
reading a chapter a week and discussing it and hearing lecture on it was very valuable and effective because it was a good amount of reading yet not extremely demanding so everyone was able to do it. it was just right in workload, with journals readings and quizzes, challenging but not exhausting
The environment the instructor offered was conducive to learning yet laid back in a good way. The text offered in the course was very easy to read yet extremely comprehensive. Chadwick is a career educator who provides a very welcoming environment and lectures in a colloquial way that is "grandfatherly" like but it seems to be suited for a subject like American Foreign policy. Flexibility in assignments and a very free and open discourse was appreciated. Chadwick knows his subject matter very well and is a great asset to this institution.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
None
Lectures were a little hard to follow.
simulations
Quizzes and exams were rather simple but the weekly exams serve their purpose in helping students focus on the main points. Lectures can get off topic at times but usually provide some insight into foreign policy and politics.

I have taken three classes with this professor and it just doesn't make me feel weak to attend his lectures because he is an excellent instructor and very smart. Using all his knowlege in grasping the students to understand the concept of the materials and whatever it is presented in the course materials. With this i have strongly recommended Dr. Chadwick to be an excellent instructor.
Supplementing the textbook with some other reading material would be nice. The quizzes and exams could also be made to be a little more challenging. It would be nice to get some feedback on the weekly writing assignments or assign topics for the weekly writing assignment so that they may be used for a point for discussion in future classes.

I really thought that the book discussions were most valuable. It helped me understand the material and relate it to current issues. I also liked the group project at the end, it really gave a different perspective to the class and let us simulate real political topics.
The four required books. These books were wonderful application to not just class but life. I will keep these books for the rest of my life. Also i found a weekly write up to be effective. It keeps us (students) engaged to the course, week by week. It also calls for a moment of reflection, i feel too many times, the message just goes in one ear and out the other. With the requirement of a write up, your forced to sit down and contemplate the message, really soak up relevance and importance.
Got me out of my comfort zone, gave me tools for future development.
I like the readings the most. There was three books that were required readings but they were very interesting to read.
EVERY SINGLE CLASS IS VALUABLE.
The small group sessions & the lectures.
the book discussions
The interactions with student was very good because it kept the students awake and focused.
Simulation activity and Lectures
Books
The content when presented in charts and graphs and on board were well presented.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
I didn't think that any part of the course was not valuable.
Your lectures that merely paraphrased the assigned readings. I felt that at the beginning of the semester you talked about things outside of the parameter of the books we were reading. However that could be because you set the foundation for the rest of the course, with topics of Stephen Covey, and Maslow, and ruler of China. Though, as the semester progressed, I felt most of the lectures talked about the readings, that most of us, read the night before. I enjoyed when you talked about other issues and make relevance to the readings and/or life in general, i.e. stress bucket.
At times unorganized, unstructured.
Group activities. Most students were opinionated to the point that they overpowered those that were quite. It didnt feel like a true legislative session.
NONE THAT I CAN THINK OFF.
The lack of a solid & firm schedule. It seemed to change and it was hard to keep track of what was needed to be done for each week.
discussions with the group
None.
Class was very disorganized, content very hard to grasp without being a specialist in the field.

Needs to be more organized, easier to understand for college students, otherwise teacher is good and course structure is good.

7. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
All aspects were valuable.
Professor Chadwick's 40 plus years of thinking about the theory, data and culture and corresponding science, praxis and philosophy of American foreign policy.
The readings were outstanding. Class discussions were interesting and enjoyable. Professor Chadwick is incredibly knowledgeable, genuinely cares about his students, and clearly enjoys teaching.
8. Which aspects of the course were least valuable?
None
Some lectures and presentations were clearer to understand than others. As with all classes in this department and perhaps in all academe, more deliberation among an international student body, especially in a seminar setting guided by the expert, the professor might benefit all involved exponentially. Of course, international students have a responsibility to contribute more substantively and imaginatively to the discussions that do take place rather than the usual manner of deferring to or passively resisting their U.S. counterparts.
