15. My overall evaluation of this instructor is....

This clas was probably the most boring class I have ever taken at UH. She might have known alot about the subject but was so boring presenting it every day by same long powerpoint and lecture. Half the class was sleeping, playing on cell phones and just never got into the subject. To make this course better she needs to re think her teaching style. The comments on the papers seem to be really negative maybe she could have had a different approach....

boring. She puts ALL of the students to sleep. She talks on and on and on about stories from when she was in Japan years ago which does relate to what we are learning, but she does so in such a way that bores everyone. She is very enthusiastic about the Japanese people and culture, but she needs to present the material in a different way, possibly. If she were to teach this class again, I think she would put all of the students to sleep and the majority of people in this class are upperclassmen. Everything she discusses in directly in her powerpoint lectures. As of this survey, I have not received my draft for our research paper back so I am not sure how her feedback will enhance my writing. She is available for help though and shows knowledge, but presents it in a boring way.

She's a very informative teacher, she really knows her material

a very hard, but good corrector of essay writing. She will break down your entire paper, but because of it you will get a much, much better one! Even as I write this, I'm scared I'm disappointing her by making any grammatical/structural errors! I learned a lot about Japanese life and society, she taught it in a good way. I'm glad I took this course because it really, really helped my writing. She was also gracious about extending our essay deadlines which helped a lot! The exams are nice because she gives the material to be studied (that helped so much!) Great semester Patricia!

Professor Steinhoff is very knowledgeable about Sociology of Japan and gave interesting examples to illustrate points. She is interested in the academic achievement of her students.

Her expertise is unquestionable. Its obvious that she has devoted herself entirely to her field. She is also a very effective teacher. She is a captivating lecturer. She can be stern but is always more than fair. She expects nothing but your best.

I lost a lot of respect for this teacher when it became obvious every class she was going to lecture us about plagerism. I thought that technique was highly unmotivating and insulting. Her stories last the majority of class time and the goal behind the lectures are unclear. I wouldn't take another class from her.

I liked how we could dive into the learning of the Japanese culture.

The tests were essay test's This Is what i liked about the course and the TA was very helpful!

structure of the midterm/final examination.

Some writing assignments were helpful. For example, the assignment where we had to cite our sources helped me when we had to write our research paper. Otherwise, everything else in the class was boring.

I liked the lectures. They were fun and informative. Her personal stories really brought the lessons home for us.

I enjoyed most of the lectures in the beginning, with all of the different situations and examples she would give.

21. Which aspects of the course did you like least?

The same boring powerpoints and dry lectures could have made the course better.

I did not like working in the discussion groups. Those class periods seem a little disorganized. I think she could have assigned just a worksheet for those assignments that we could do on our own and submit. I may have not enjoyed it since the classmates I was grouped with did not understand the assignment or instructions well. I also did not like the ambiguous free response midterm. She did not help us study for the exam or answer questions we had. The lectures were also very boring.

I disliked that there were so many powerpoint lectures. I would have liked to learn more about how to do research in sociology.

I wasn't a fan of group work. Students were not equally interested and driven to complete tasks. Many times a few good students were dragged down by the less interested.

Some of the group activities felt a little redundant when we had to share basically the same info from each person in a group.

The 15 page paper. I'm aware she wanted a long polished piece, but I think, for an undergrad writing intensive, you'd learn a lot more with multiple smaller papers (three five page papers, or even two seven page papers - one on the stuff before the midterm and one on the stuff afterwards) on different topics rather than a really long one on a single topic, where many students will simply end up trying to write 5+ pages of filler.

I would not recommend this course taught be this professor!!

A very interesting class that I learned a lot in.

Great course, very useful for those planning to study or live in Japan.

Good course, I would recommend it to a friend. The final paper is very demanding but I think we did get a lot out of it.

Most of the lectures were interesting, lots of time given for the paper and assignments. The personal stories of the professor's life experiences were probably some of the most interesting lectures I've ever had at UH - those particular ones were easy to understand and easy to listen to.

I wish slides were put online a little earlier so that I could print them out for class.

The TA was helpful and nice. She graded fairly and was available for help.

Great materials and discussion

Dr. Steinhoffâ??s class offers me practical knowledge and skills that advanced my research skills. With the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East and the current Occupy Wall Street movement, studying social movements turned out to be a timely course to take. I really enjoyed the class. Dr. Steinhoff provided more than 4 pages of suggestions and comments for a paper draft to each student. I know no other professor who does this. It is simply good to know that there is a unique professor who spends such time and effort to each student for a term paper. Also, at the end of the class, Dr. Steinhoff always addressed what the next readings would be talking about, and it helped me a lot. Such a seemingly small thing makes a big difference in student's life. Dr. Steinhoff provided me an irreplaceable opportunity to advance my study, and I appreciate it very much.

I like a lot when she keeps asking us almost every week about our project so that motivates me to start working the project since the beginning of the semester. The thing I value the most in the class is the readings in the coursepack are useful but the language uses are complicated to understand. Among all articles, I like the one about Framing process the most.

I liked that the course was organized around the development of social movement theory, and that the overall aim was to provide us with theories to apply to our own research.

research projects that we carried individually on a movement each one of us selected based on our own interests allowed me to understand the materials better, to apply this understanding to a real-world movement and to improve research skills. great challenge! also, office hours were most helpful.

I think the Blackwell Companion to Social Movement text book is not really important because most of the reading articles that she assigned for us to read in this textbook are quite similar to readings in the courspack.

I would have like more of an opportunity to engage critically with the readings.

The teaching method was good due to she usually invites the student involvement

I think the way it is workking well. Dr. Steinhoff could effectevely lead the student to write a good paper, and that's what the student need to learn in academia.

Perhaps by changing the grading structure so there is less weight on our final paper

i was careful to comment on others' projects so if there is more encouragement to discuss them and to relate to other cases that could be interesting.

I strongly recommended to take this great course. I like it

I am glad that I took this course. The class is pleasantly structured, and taught by a genuine scholar. I also enjoyed the student body in the class. I could learn with peace of mind, and that in turn advanced my study. The reading materials were carefully prepared and that helped me when I had to go back to any particular reading. Overall, this is a class of plentiful lerning opportunities. Thank you for a super-class!

The concepts that we learned can be easily applied in analyzing everyday society, so I found most of the course material was the very helpful and valuable.

The instructor is incredibly knowledgeable about the material and is more than willing to answer any and all questions both during the lectures and outside of class.

I learned new Japanese words from her lectures. Also I have a better understanding about Japanese society.

The professor was the most valuable assent in the class. I have had a lot of experience in Japan so the information that we went over was not new. However, Professor Steinhoff helped guide me to a research paper that was both interesting and enjoyable to write. Without that personal touch I wouldn't have gained anything from the class content.

I liked how we had discussions in the beginning half of the semester. I felt I was able to learn more when we did in-class exercises. This way I could hear what other people thought about our lectures just in case I didn't understand the professor during lecture. I also, liked the fact the professor throughly read our proposals and first draft. I thought the comments were really helpful.

Being able to site some internet sites and not plagiarize.

I found that Professor Steinhoff's knowledge and enthusiasm towards studying Japanese society was biggest asset in this class.

VERY late grading...

While the texts put up on Laulima were extremely interesting, I thought that the textbooks we bought were pretty useless in the long run.

There were long delays between submission dates and return dates for important work (i.e., the midterm and the first essay draft). In particular, because we aren't receiving our first draft back until 9 days before the re-write is due, I lost over a week's worth of free time I could have spent working on it. With all the other end-of-term work in my other classes, this lack of time has created some additional stress which may hamper the quality of the work. Her justification for delaying returning the work is valid; it's is just a shame the students have to be forced into a time crunch because of it.

That some teachers are too critical on their grading and assignments.

we were provided with review sheets for the mid-term and finals and those were the one's that was on the exam. That was really good because we knew what to expect.

The majority of the materials were not new to me.

I feel that having one large research paper was a bit overwhelming and would have liked to see it split into maybe a smaller 3-5 page research paper in the first half of the semester and a larger 10-12 page research paper in the latter half.

The syllabus wasn't well organized. The reading material and papers should of been on another sheet to state clearer on what is going to happen during the week ahead

Teacher is knowledgeable but I personally felt it was difficult to do any writing because my perceptions on the material didn't always come off as correct to her.

She is a great professor because I learned many things from her through her lectures and assignments.

She really knows her stuff, but it seems like she is kinda too busy to grade...

She's a good professor and enthusiastic about the subject. I understand that she is very busy, so I don't mind if she returns papers and tests at a later time, but one thing I'd ask for improvement on is for her to give a better estimate on when she would be returning back materials. The return date tended to get pushed back farther and farther; it would have been better to tell us that we would realistically have gotten our first draft papers after Thanksgiving break.

She is a very knowledgeable researcher who clearly understands a great deal about Japanese society and has a wealth of experiences to share. She is also a very helpful instructor who was always willing to answer questions both in and outside of class. She clearly cares about her students and helping them learn, which is a huge asset. The only difficulty is that she has to juggle her time and talents between her research and her class, and sometimes the class takes the brunt of that conflict.

She's a great teacher I learned a lot from her class and she is well organized with her lectures. She is also always asking if anyone has a questions during her lecture and that was great.

Professor Steinhoff is clearly very excited about her topic and her depth of knowledge is second to none. She seems very concerned about students and willing to make time for them. It was great to have a professor that applies the skills of teaching instead of just conveying information.

Great professor who really makes an effort to help students w/ their research paper as well as makes sure we understand the lecture.

A great teacher whose passion toward the subject matter shines through.

I enjoyed professor Steinhoff very much. She made the class very enjoyable and easy to comprehend! I also enjoyed a lot of her personal experiences on her studies that she shared with the class.

A good professor, well detailed, which is a good and bad thing. Good because she covers the material well, bad, because she teaches it so slow.

Good knowledge of Japan and it's culture

I think she graded very harshly on the writing assignments. I got a very low score on my draft of the paper, but I wrote what my proposal was. When she graded it, she basically made me change my topic to something else even though she had approved my proposal.

This is an interesting class and very important to learn about Japan.

Good if ppl want to learn about Japanese society and why they behave in certain ways

An interesting course. The lecture slides were very helpful. I think the free reign over topics for the final research paper might have been one of the better things of the course, because we were allowed to write about something we were interested in, so long as they had to do with the sociology of Japan.

The class was informative and interesting, and the instructor was very helpful. She is a great teacher, and I would take another class with her. Moreover, I enjoyed this class and felt it was a decent workload for the course level.

Not to excited about this course. I fell asleep consistantly. She just rambled on and on... Wish she would do more in class activities. If she is a sociology major, maybe she should consider learning the fact that human beings are not made to sit still in a class room for an hour and fifteen minutes and focus directly at a projected screen. Try to improvise what you have done in the past and make school fun instead of a prison.

Love the course learned a lot about Japanese society and also Japanese terminologies. Recommend to everyone

I took this class only because I needed it to meet a major requirement. If the class that I wanted to take was available I wouldn't have taken this class. However, in the end I feel that the class has proven to be more useful that I had originally expected.

Enjoyed learning about Japan from this course. I would recommend it to others.

I liked the fact that this course was very practical and helpful for constructing research. Readings that were put together were extremely valuable as well.

Pretty much everything, I believe the class did a great job of introducing what was a new subject to me, covered a wide range of perspectives, and supplied students with great training for professional research.

This course help me to grasp the theoretical and empirical overviews on social movements field systematically. Especially, instructor has kept encouraged students to apply newly-learnt theory and terms to their own cases/projects, which made them possible to apply those stuffs to their own works. Especially, the six-pages hand writing comments for the draft was impressive. That really helped to understand the flaws and the possibility of the draft I submitted.

There are few classes in which I can say I really learned a new set of skills. This is the first time in a long while that I've come out of a class and felt like I learned a new way to understand sociology in a meaningful manner.

This class was great. The only thing that might be changed is to include more of a interactive discussion of class materials and more room for students to ask questions. We cover so much material that there is not enough time to ask as many questions as one might want.

Encourage students to talk and participate in discussion. I think many students had things to say but were intimidated by a lack of good understanding with the articles. Asking questions based on students opinions or experiences might facilitate a more comfortable atmosphere for students to free discuss ideas and ask questions on concepts.
