13. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The fact that technology plays a big role in determining Social trends.
I loved the videos shown!!
There was not one thing we leaned that was not valuable. Everything pertains to the life and world we live in.
The breakdown of the issues/topics in her power points
Learning about technologies that we use in our everyday lives
reading load was intense but I learned a lot. ppt lectures were relevant and intriguing. videos and debates were awesome! My writing improved because of this class.
the assignments
Writing papers in this class strengthened my writing style, and discussions have sharpened my critical thinking. Also, class debates are excellent practice for effective reasoning.
She made the class and the material very interesting. She gave great feedbcak on her papers which really helped me improve as a writer.
The lecture content--the slides and other visual aids really helped me wrap my head around some really complex ethical issues.
I found ALL aspects of the course (group activities/debates, assignments, lectures, etc) to be very valuable.
The small class size, as well as the interactive course material. Since this course was based around technology, Holly allowed us to use technology in the classroom for certain in-class activities. Many of us took advantage of Google docs as a form of communication during in-class debates and we were able to use the internet to look up facts to back our arguments.
how she made us write paper and do reading notes. The reading notes really helped me with the in class work and the papers we had to write

I believe having the class in a computer lab that is normally open to students during the day was quite distracting. Some students couldn't help using the computers during class time and we even had students that were not a part of the class come in and use the computers during our class. It was quite distracting but with it being a computer lab, it was understandable.

She does such an exceptional job already, I cannot think of how else to improve upon her performance.
I found Holly to be very knowledgeable of the course material. I was able to engage in discussions with my peers and Holly and gain insight to information that I was unaware of, as well as expand my ways of thinking critically.
I believe that with an actual classroom or lecture hall, Holly will be able to better deliver content for the course and create a more productive setting.
She was and is the best professor i have had since transffering to UH

Super cool, she deserves a hugeeeeeeeee raise!! :)
The fact that we had no test but homework weekly and papers were better because I feel we will benefit and actually remember the material learned.
She's a great professor
Overall a fun interactive course that actually makes you learn. These ideas went over in class are applicable to everyday life which makes us engage in the material more than any other class. The way she has everything set up forces you to learn and enjoy the class at the same time. Awesome job!
amazing teacher. Holly wants you to learn and she definitely makes the effort. This course added to my perception of the world. One of the top 5 classes of my academic career.
Holly Sevier is a teacher that is both inspiring and fostering, and also fun; easily, she is one of the best teachers I've had the privilege to learn from at UH Manoa. She presents material in ways that are appealing, and her vast knowledge is something that all UH students should have the opportunity to tune into. I learned so much, and not only class material but also practical skills that enhance my ability to do good work. Hers are classes I would recommend to fellow students if they wanted classes where they would learn material that would not only benefit them but also stick with them. EXCELLENT CLASS, EXCELLENT TEACHER.
Holly was a great teacher. Always easily accessable to communicate with her via email. She showed that she really enoyed the material and was fair/interesting/knowledgeable throughout the semester.
Holly was amazing to have as a professor. She was always willing to help us before and after class and was very very easy to talk to.

13. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
In-class presentations/public speaking exercises!
I developed in my presentation skills and I was able to gain confidence in my performances in front of the class.
Great teacher overall. One of the best professors I have had here at UH. Very helpful with all aspects of the class and seemed to enjoy the material as well as coming to class everyday. She was very professional but at the the same time very down to earth which made her class enjoyable for everyone. Great experience and am thankful to have been able to take her classes.
oral
Critical thinking with regards to media topics.
The attitude of acceptance in all topics. It opens up the room for discussion without judgements and helped us as individuals to be more confident. Also the relevance of what we spoke about. ITs always important to keep students interested and i believe that Holly did that perfectly!
I like how she really had the class be interactive. It made class enjoyable and easy to contribute to class discussions.
the echnology with the class was very interesting, and the topics, ideas, and assignments we did in class was very interesting and fun
She was willing to help as much as possible
The way she presented the material through her lessons. In addition she worked very well with students to help them obtain a better understanding of public speaking and writing.
I found ALL aspects of the course to be most valuable. I found the group activities and debates to be fun and interesting because they involved societal problems, in which we were able to communicate our beliefs/opinions, as well as gain insight of the topic. I also liked analyzing video's and films because it was a new experience that allowed me to really think about certain topics and expand my ways of thinking critically.
she was very helpful in every aspect and well knowledged in sociology field
All aspects of this course were valuable.
Presentations, Lectures, and Reading Notes.
public speaking
This course was taught differently from other classes that I've taken before. This course focused on the oral communication requirement so a lot of our evaluations was done through oral presentation. We did several presentations with different times. It was an interesting way to incorporate what we learned in class.

Best SOC class I have ever taken! :) I loved the "O" focus because it helped me become a better public speaker. Maybe for future assignments, there can be "impromptu public speaking" exercises about something SOC-related to help us become even MORE skilled in public speaking & to challenge us to think on our feet? I absolutely loved this class and I would take it again if I could! Thank you for everything, Holly!
Holly is the best professor I've ever had. She really cares about her students and does everything she can to help us be successful in school.
Great teacher. Would reccomend her to anyone who is taking a soc class.

In answering question 27. I can say that we never had exams and therefore chose neutral.
By far my favorite class at UH. I was dreading taking my required oral communications focus but this class turned that around. Holly is as interesting as pop culture is and became one of my favorite professors taken
She has a wonderful attitude towards teaching and helping her students
Professor Sevier is a great professor and the university is lucky to have her because not a lot of professors interest me and I'm glad I took this class before I graduated.

Holly is a great instructor and was an invaluable source of knowledge throughout the semester. Her lectures were interesting, fun, well-prepared, and informative. Her approach to teaching is unique and effective. Overall, I gained a lot from this course. It was intellectually stimulating and brought out the best in me.
Fun and interesting class but more importantly what I've learned from taking Pop Culture especially presentations.

10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I thought that the reading notes and ethical dilemma papers were the most valuable. The reading notes kept me on task throughout the semester. Usually, textbooks get put on the back burner as the semester goes on, but having to keep up with the readings by taking active notes was really helpful. As for the ethical dilemmas, those tasks had us look at topics from a very different (moral) standpoint, which really helped expand our thinking about technology and its ethical consequences.
excellent teacher
Our class website, Technology and Society blog, was valuable to me because I constantly checked which assignments were due. The reading notes were also valuable because it made me actually read the class book and have a more in depth understanding about the subject of the week.
Ethical issues related to the films in class. Reading Notes.
I enjoyed the many opportunities I was given to write. My favorite were the ethical dilemmas, as they prompted me to think more deeply about important issues.
ethical dilemmas
being able to analyze society and to see how technology has grown.
relating things back to ordinary life.
the mix between lecture, movies, and activities
She is a very informative and knowledgeable professor! I was able to learn a lot from her!
Being exposed to different types of technology and how history evolved technology to modern day.
The most valuable aspect of this course was the emphasis on creativity in our studies. something not always found in other courses.
the aspects of ethical dilemmas and the approaches to each
I liked some of the documentaries we watched and the ethical issues were super interesting.
To think about technology as machines and not things that rule our lives. Also, Holly has helped me become a better and more confident writer.

I'm not sure how to improve the class the way it already is.
i think she did an excellent job. i fully enjoyed this semester
It would have been nice to read some Haraway or McLuhan and discuss in class.
drop some readings
IT'S A FUN CLASS
to be honest she's doing a very good job teaching the course

I would suggest to split up the lectures will discussions, videos, debates a little more. Sometimes the lectures seemed long and didn't catch my attention for a long time.
Holly is a great teacher and I can't think of anything against her.

I really enjoyed this class! It was fun, interesting, and the topics we covered (like the historical timeline of technology) were exactly what I had hoped we would learn about!
it was an excellent class. i really enjoyed this semester. really made it enjoyable.
I highly recommend everyone, to take SOC415 with Holly Sevier because she is an outstanding teacher. Her expectations for each assignment are clear and direct. I never had a moment when I didn't know what I was supposed to do for an assignment. Her lectures and power points were very informative and highly entertaining. Overall, I would give Holly Sevier an A+.

14. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
The oral communication exercises was the most valuable aspect to me because it help improve my presentation skills
The lectures by Dr. Sevier were very valuable because they taught me a lot about popular culture and other issues in our society.
very informative, entertaining, and fan!
- Learning about
I think that the presentations we did were very valuable because I am not used to speaking in public. This class helped me work on my communication skills. Also, the textbooks were very helpful because they had a lot of good information, were actually easy reads, and interesting.
Reading Notes. Although the process of writing a summary for the chapter may seem boring it really helped toward my overall understanding of the class. The fact that it was required to submit notes meant that i HAD TO read the book otherwise i wouldn't have. Blog Page.. quick references for all of the students. Everything we need for the class was on the page and it was extremely helpful.
Applying sociological terms and ideas outside of the classroom and in everyday life. Also, speaking in front of the class many times helped me with my public speaking abilities.
I feel like the parts that were the most valuable had to deal with the presentations and the skills involved with it.
-debates -pesentations -lectures
learning to speak in front of a class and knowing how to get around certain slip ups.
the power points and the group discussions
The reading notes were helpful because it forced me to comprehend what I read instead of just reading it. I also found the textbook "Mix It Up" very interesting, and provided me with most of the new material I learned from this class. Documentaries I also found very interesting to analyze because I feel it has a direct link to pop culture.
I believe that the lectures were very interesting and I learned a lot more than I thought I knew about the world and about popular culture and how much of it is everywhere.
Class discussions
Holly did a good job of explaining the connection between the material and the real world (or not so real). She also was successful at connecting it back to sociology.
15. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
critially thinking about movies and proper presentation skills
The skills I learned in public speaking
Confidence and critical thinking! She taught me to become a better public speaker and critical thinker!
- Doing presentations on interesting subjects. - Learning about the critical approach to popular culture. - Being more aware of the what is really behind movies or advertisements, why they chose to do things why they did
I will most likely remember the preparation and actual presentations of different popular culture topics.
Holly Sevier herself. She is a brilliant teacher and person.
Trajan Mcgriddles and DJ Filthy Rich
great professor
the teachers sense of humor and all the youtube videos.
How relaxed the atmosphere was, everyone felt really comfortable with everyone and I wasn't afraid to speak up.
Professor Sevier. She was just a great teacher and I learned a lot about trying to be confident while speaking in public.

24. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Give students advanced notice about debates and what side they are going to be on so they can research and be more prepared for it
I personally didn't really like the debates because I didn't feel prepared and because most people didn't talk or contribute ideas. Maybe if it was in smaller groups people would contribute more--- or maybe that would suck because then you might be stuck in a group with people who don't talk and then you are the only one!
I think to improve this course, it would great if lectures/ powerpoints were also available online, especially if you changed the course to have quizzes/tests (although I like the way it is, without those things).
I think she's doing a great job so far! Im having a difficult time thinking of things that she can improve in.
By keeping current with new sociological trends.
I think Holly has a firm grasp of what to teach and what to go over in this class. It always just depends on what the newest trend is and what is currently going on in society.

13. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
I will remember the ridiculous Tony whats-his-face infomercial voice warm-up before our first presentations. It didn't really help me... But I got the idea behind why she had us do it. But to be serious, I will remember the material, which I was nominally familiar with before, but it was enlightening to study it in far more depth. I've always thought of pop culture as a tool - it's not something that is "bad" or "good" inherently, but the more we enlighten ourselves to the way the pop culture apparatus works, the more we can make informed decisions about what we choose to consume and what we expose our children to. Also the oral presentations were helpful. I'm so glad I did SOC 491 before taking this O focus class. It gave me more confidence speaking in public - however speaking to the SOC 100 students is far different than speaking to your peers and instructor, so it was still nerve-wracking. But it got better. I am planning on pursuing law, so public speaking is a necessary skill, and I did learn that from this class. I would've liked to have done more oral focus requirements in the class, though, (I bet I'm the only one that will say that in these evaluations!) So overall, thanks for teaching the course! I I did learn a lot, and I will make sure to remember much of this as the years roll by. I'll be thirty seven in ten years, so hopefully my senile dementia will not have set in by then (just kidding... or should I say j/k?!)
The way we look at popular culture and the things in popular culture that are often overlooked.
Somewhat getting over my fear of talking in front of people. I think I will always be scared, but this course has helped me realize that public speaking isn't so bad once I get over it. Presenting in the public is just something to get done and get checked off the list.
the things i learned for making presentations
1. Proper posture when giving a presentation 2. PowerPoint skills (not too many words, imbedding clips, transitions) 3. Overall OC skills (speed, logical order, clarity) 4. HS is from England!
critical thinking. thinking through different perspectives
all of the public speaking exercises.
I'll remember the different topics brought up like the lecture on Diamonds or on Superheroes. It is things I don't really think of when I think of pop culture.
The skills I have developed. Although I still may not be perfect with writing or speaking, the constructive criticism she gave has been helpful and I will take away some great advice for the future.
Summer school and having to do presentations.
It being one of the few classes that I have taken at UHM where students interacted with each other. Class discussions where very interesting where class participation carried discussions.
How to do a powerpoint, and public speaking skills. I will also remember the three sociological standpoints.

24. Other comments:
I knew I would enjoy this course because I'd met Holly before, and as soon as she said "students take SOC 459 because they think it will be easy, but it's actually quite theoretical," I was hooked. I love social theory! That was why I registered for it. I know that she has a strong commitment to effective teaching and expects a lot from her students, which is exactly the kind of instructor I want - someone who will challenge me to do better always in everything I do. I don't feel the writings were too difficult. I churned out my papers in an hour or two, but I do have a lot of practice writing, being an English major as well, (Not that I'm a great writer, few actually are, but I think I'm a good writer). On another note, I've noticed that sociology majors are far too cordial in peer writing critique's. I was disappointed that no one made any suggestions that improved my papers. I just wrote them and hoped for the best. Okay, what else. I appreciated how knowledgeable Holly is about the material. I liked the real life examples she used, very funny and engaging. And studying aliens and zombies in an academic setting, how cool is that! I also really appreciated that she seemed to sympathize with us students, perhaps not being as far removed from having been a student as many professors are. She seemed very concerned with not wasting our invaluable class time with fillers like excessive movies, film clips, or other stuff we could access on our own. Further, being a novice powerpoint user, I learned a lot from Holly about this. I've always hated it, but powerpoint is the future of public speaking; it is a necessary skill in so many professions, and I was appreciative and grateful for the crash course in powerpoint she gave us. There is a right and a wrong way to do powerpoint, and I felt a little more at ease with it by the end of the semester. A note of constructive criticism: I would have liked more group discussions, perhaps less lecturing. But I know that as an accelerated summer course, this is difficult to fit in when there is so much material to cover... Overall, I am pleased that I've taken this course with Holly Sevier. I appreciate her knowledge, her academic initiative (the pre and post tests for her teaching effectiveness research), her insights, and teaching skills. I would recommend her class any day. I wish I could fit her Technology and Society class into my graduation plan, but it's just not going to work, sadly. Thanks so much!
Mrs. Sevier is well adept at presenting class materials in an interesting and engaging manner. I highly recommend this instructor to anyone who wants to enjoy their class and most importantly, learn new subject matter.
Great class, great teacher.
best teacher yet
I enjoyed all of the oral communication exercises. They will be beneficial for future opportunities.
I really enjoyed this class. The grading on papers were a bit skewed. But overall this course has been one of my favorite courses I've ever taken. Holly is a breath of fresh air in Sociology and I think is a great contributor.
Our class exercises made presenting in front of the class a lot easier. After talking in front of the class a few times, I felt more comfortable. Thank you, this was very helpful. Overall, this was a really informative class to take over the summer, and Professor Sevier did a great job teaching the course.
Thank you for letting me have the opportunity to take this class. It was a great learning experience!

10. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?
crictical thinking on ethical issues.
I now feel a need to watch the news. Also, I can approach problems through ethical standpoints much easier after doing all the ethical dilemma essays. They're memorized by now.
More knowledge about the technology and food facts!
Critical analysis of topics helped me to develop personal opinions about ethical topics. The one page paper assignments helped to get to the "meat" of the assignments with out having to waste time on unneeded information
I have become more aware of how many things in our daily lives have ethical issues in them and now give much more thought to whether something is ethically right or wrong. I am also now less dependent on technology because I have realized how much it has taken over our lives and that it is not always a good thing.
I learned how to recognize an ethical issue and make an ethical decision on the issue. Before this class I had little understanding of these types of issues.
how to make a ethical judgement relationship between technology and ethics. How to write a survey paper
The ethical understanding of the events to come.
It has influenced the kind of news shows or documentaries I want to watch. This course has truly gotten me to think outside the box, that there is a whole other world out there left virtually unexplored by the general public. I don't just want to consume anymore. I want to know where things come from. I want to plant and maintain a garden. I want to, from time to time, sit back and enjoy all of nature's beauty.

I was really excited to go to class everyday! Lectures were very educational and FUN! I would definitely recommend Holly to my friends.
This is one of the most interesting class I've ever taken. Thank you for making education fun!
I very enjoyed this course! I would love to take we purse again
The only problem I had with the course was the lack of explanation of the one page writing assignments. Most of the directions were generic and copied for every assignment. The only explanation of the individual assignments was in the title.
I love what I learned in this course. And I will take what I learned and somehow apply it to my daily life.

I will remember how much popular culture effects our everyday life and that we should look critically at it and question it.
The enthusiastic and effective communication done in part by Holly and the interesting materials that we covered.
Having to stand up in front of class and give speeches. Holly gave good advice about public speaking and posture. I will remember that 10 years from now.
