10. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
ethical dilemmas
I thought that the reading notes and ethical dilemma papers were the most valuable. The reading notes kept me on task throughout the semester. Usually, textbooks get put on the back burner as the semester goes on, but having to keep up with the readings by taking active notes was really helpful. As for the ethical dilemmas, those tasks had us look at topics from a very different (moral) standpoint, which really helped expand our thinking about technology and its ethical consequences.
Ethical issues related to the films in class. Reading Notes.
To think about technology as machines and not things that rule our lives. Also, Holly has helped me become a better and more confident writer.
relating things back to ordinary life.
The most valuable aspect of this course was the emphasis on creativity in our studies. something not always found in other courses.
being able to analyze society and to see how technology has grown.
Being exposed to different types of technology and how history evolved technology to modern day.
excellent teacher
the mix between lecture, movies, and activities
Our class website, Technology and Society blog, was valuable to me because I constantly checked which assignments were due. The reading notes were also valuable because it made me actually read the class book and have a more in depth understanding about the subject of the week.
She is a very informative and knowledgeable professor! I was able to learn a lot from her!
the aspects of ethical dilemmas and the approaches to each
I enjoyed the many opportunities I was given to write. My favorite were the ethical dilemmas, as they prompted me to think more deeply about important issues.
I liked some of the documentaries we watched and the ethical issues were super interesting.

I'm not sure how to improve the class the way it already is.
Holly is a great teacher and I can't think of anything against her.

i think she did an excellent job. i fully enjoyed this semester
to be honest she's doing a very good job teaching the course
None
It would have been nice to read some Haraway or McLuhan and discuss in class.

I would suggest to split up the lectures will discussions, videos, debates a little more. Sometimes the lectures seemed long and didn't catch my attention for a long time.

I really enjoyed this class! It was fun, interesting, and the topics we covered (like the historical timeline of technology) were exactly what I had hoped we would learn about!
It was a interesting class that I enjoyed.
Good. Holly cares for her students and wants them to do well. She would do what she can to help them get good grades in the class.
Holly is a thoroughly enthusiastic instructor, with an equally excellent course.

I highly recommend everyone, to take SOC415 with Holly Sevier because she is an outstanding teacher. Her expectations for each assignment are clear and direct. I never had a moment when I didn't know what I was supposed to do for an assignment. Her lectures and power points were very informative and highly entertaining. Overall, I would give Holly Sevier an A+.

14. Which aspects of the course were most valuable?
I feel like the parts that were the most valuable had to deal with the presentations and the skills involved with it.
-debates -pesentations -lectures
I think that the presentations we did were very valuable because I am not used to speaking in public. This class helped me work on my communication skills. Also, the textbooks were very helpful because they had a lot of good information, were actually easy reads, and interesting.
I believe that the lectures were very interesting and I learned a lot more than I thought I knew about the world and about popular culture and how much of it is everywhere.
Class discussions
the power points and the group discussions
Holly did a good job of explaining the connection between the material and the real world (or not so real). She also was successful at connecting it back to sociology.
learning to speak in front of a class and knowing how to get around certain slip ups.
The reading notes were helpful because it forced me to comprehend what I read instead of just reading it. I also found the textbook "Mix It Up" very interesting, and provided me with most of the new material I learned from this class. Documentaries I also found very interesting to analyze because I feel it has a direct link to pop culture.
- Learning about
Reading Notes. Although the process of writing a summary for the chapter may seem boring it really helped toward my overall understanding of the class. The fact that it was required to submit notes meant that i HAD TO read the book otherwise i wouldn't have. Blog Page.. quick references for all of the students. Everything we need for the class was on the page and it was extremely helpful.
Applying sociological terms and ideas outside of the classroom and in everyday life. Also, speaking in front of the class many times helped me with my public speaking abilities.
The oral communication exercises was the most valuable aspect to me because it help improve my presentation skills
The lectures by Dr. Sevier were very valuable because they taught me a lot about popular culture and other issues in our society.
very informative, entertaining, and fan!
15. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
Trajan Mcgriddles and DJ Filthy Rich
great professor
I will most likely remember the preparation and actual presentations of different popular culture topics.
Professor Sevier. She was just a great teacher and I learned a lot about trying to be confident while speaking in public.
speaking with confidence
the teachers sense of humor and all the youtube videos.
... the interesting discussions and debates.
How relaxed the atmosphere was, everyone felt really comfortable with everyone and I wasn't afraid to speak up.
- Doing presentations on interesting subjects. - Learning about the critical approach to popular culture. - Being more aware of the what is really behind movies or advertisements, why they chose to do things why they did
Holly Sevier herself. She is a brilliant teacher and person.
critially thinking about movies and proper presentation skills
The skills I learned in public speaking
Confidence and critical thinking! She taught me to become a better public speaker and critical thinker!

24. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
I think Holly has a firm grasp of what to teach and what to go over in this class. It always just depends on what the newest trend is and what is currently going on in society.
no change required
I think to improve this course, it would great if lectures/ powerpoints were also available online, especially if you changed the course to have quizzes/tests (although I like the way it is, without those things).
N/A
no area of improvement needed
No NEED!!
nothing, I enjoyed the course a lot
-- snipped --
I personally didn't really like the debates because I didn't feel prepared and because most people didn't talk or contribute ideas. Maybe if it was in smaller groups people would contribute more--- or maybe that would suck because then you might be stuck in a group with people who don't talk and then you are the only one!
I think she's doing a great job so far! Im having a difficult time thinking of things that she can improve in.
By keeping current with new sociological trends.
Give students advanced notice about debates and what side they are going to be on so they can research and be more prepared for it

13. Ten years from now I'll probably remember this course most by ...
Somewhat getting over my fear of talking in front of people. I think I will always be scared, but this course has helped me realize that public speaking isn't so bad once I get over it. Presenting in the public is just something to get done and get checked off the list.
1. Proper posture when giving a presentation 2. PowerPoint skills (not too many words, imbedding clips, transitions) 3. Overall OC skills (speed, logical order, clarity) 4. HS is from England!
I will remember the ridiculous Tony whats-his-face infomercial voice warm-up before our first presentations. It didn't really help me... But I got the idea behind why she had us do it. But to be serious, I will remember the material, which I was nominally familiar with before, but it was enlightening to study it in far more depth. I've always thought of pop culture as a tool - it's not something that is "bad" or "good" inherently, but the more we enlighten ourselves to the way the pop culture apparatus works, the more we can make informed decisions about what we choose to consume and what we expose our children to. Also the oral presentations were helpful. I'm so glad I did SOC 491 before taking this O focus class. It gave me more confidence speaking in public - however speaking to the SOC 100 students is far different than speaking to your peers and instructor, so it was still nerve-wracking. But it got better. I am planning on pursuing law, so public speaking is a necessary skill, and I did learn that from this class. I would've liked to have done more oral focus requirements in the class, though, (I bet I'm the only one that will say that in these evaluations!) So overall, thanks for teaching the course! I I did learn a lot, and I will make sure to remember much of this as the years roll by. I'll be thirty seven in ten years, so hopefully my senile dementia will not have set in by then (just kidding... or should I say j/k?!)
The way we look at popular culture and the things in popular culture that are often overlooked.
It being one of the few classes that I have taken at UHM where students interacted with each other. Class discussions where very interesting where class participation carried discussions.
The skills I have developed. Although I still may not be perfect with writing or speaking, the constructive criticism she gave has been helpful and I will take away some great advice for the future.
I'll remember the different topics brought up like the lecture on Diamonds or on Superheroes. It is things I don't really think of when I think of pop culture.
Summer school and having to do presentations.
critical thinking. thinking through different perspectives
the things i learned for making presentations
How to do a powerpoint, and public speaking skills. I will also remember the three sociological standpoints.
all of the public speaking exercises.

Great class, great teacher.
I knew I would enjoy this course because I'd met Holly before, and as soon as she said "students take SOC 459 because they think it will be easy, but it's actually quite theoretical," I was hooked. I love social theory! That was why I registered for it. I know that she has a strong commitment to effective teaching and expects a lot from her students, which is exactly the kind of instructor I want - someone who will challenge me to do better always in everything I do. I don't feel the writings were too difficult. I churned out my papers in an hour or two, but I do have a lot of practice writing, being an English major as well, (Not that I'm a great writer, few actually are, but I think I'm a good writer). On another note, I've noticed that sociology majors are far too cordial in peer writing critique's. I was disappointed that no one made any suggestions that improved my papers. I just wrote them and hoped for the best. Okay, what else. I appreciated how knowledgeable Holly is about the material. I liked the real life examples she used, very funny and engaging. And studying aliens and zombies in an academic setting, how cool is that! I also really appreciated that she seemed to sympathize with us students, perhaps not being as far removed from having been a student as many professors are. She seemed very concerned with not wasting our invaluable class time with fillers like excessive movies, film clips, or other stuff we could access on our own. Further, being a novice powerpoint user, I learned a lot from Holly about this. I've always hated it, but powerpoint is the future of public speaking; it is a necessary skill in so many professions, and I was appreciative and grateful for the crash course in powerpoint she gave us. There is a right and a wrong way to do powerpoint, and I felt a little more at ease with it by the end of the semester. A note of constructive criticism: I would have liked more group discussions, perhaps less lecturing. But I know that as an accelerated summer course, this is difficult to fit in when there is so much material to cover... Overall, I am pleased that I've taken this course with Holly Sevier. I appreciate her knowledge, her academic initiative (the pre and post tests for her teaching effectiveness research), her insights, and teaching skills. I would recommend her class any day. I wish I could fit her Technology and Society class into my graduation plan, but it's just not going to work, sadly. Thanks so much!
Mrs. Sevier is well adept at presenting class materials in an interesting and engaging manner. I highly recommend this instructor to anyone who wants to enjoy their class and most importantly, learn new subject matter.
Our class exercises made presenting in front of the class a lot easier. After talking in front of the class a few times, I felt more comfortable. Thank you, this was very helpful. Overall, this was a really informative class to take over the summer, and Professor Sevier did a great job teaching the course.
I really enjoyed this class. The grading on papers were a bit skewed. But overall this course has been one of my favorite courses I've ever taken. Holly is a breath of fresh air in Sociology and I think is a great contributor.
best teacher yet
Thank you for letting me have the opportunity to take this class. It was a great learning experience!
I enjoyed all of the oral communication exercises. They will be beneficial for future opportunities.

10. What things did you get from this course that will benefit you personally?
It has influenced the kind of news shows or documentaries I want to watch. This course has truly gotten me to think outside the box, that there is a whole other world out there left virtually unexplored by the general public. I don't just want to consume anymore. I want to know where things come from. I want to plant and maintain a garden. I want to, from time to time, sit back and enjoy all of nature's beauty.
Critical analysis of topics helped me to develop personal opinions about ethical topics. The one page paper assignments helped to get to the "meat" of the assignments with out having to waste time on unneeded information
crictical thinking on ethical issues.
I learned how to recognize an ethical issue and make an ethical decision on the issue. Before this class I had little understanding of these types of issues.
I have become more aware of how many things in our daily lives have ethical issues in them and now give much more thought to whether something is ethically right or wrong. I am also now less dependent on technology because I have realized how much it has taken over our lives and that it is not always a good thing.
More knowledge about the technology and food facts!
I now feel a need to watch the news. Also, I can approach problems through ethical standpoints much easier after doing all the ethical dilemma essays. They're memorized by now.
The ethical understanding of the events to come.
how to make a ethical judgement relationship between technology and ethics. How to write a survey paper

I love what I learned in this course. And I will take what I learned and somehow apply it to my daily life.
The only problem I had with the course was the lack of explanation of the one page writing assignments. Most of the directions were generic and copied for every assignment. The only explanation of the individual assignments was in the title.
waffles.
I was really excited to go to class everyday! Lectures were very educational and FUN! I would definitely recommend Holly to my friends.
This is one of the most interesting class I've ever taken. Thank you for making education fun!
I very enjoyed this course! I would love to take we purse again

The real-life applicability of the course material
The enthusiastic and effective communication done in part by Holly and the interesting materials that we covered.
Anytime I'm expose to any form of media.
I will remember how much popular culture effects our everyday life and that we should look critically at it and question it.
The nerve wrecking presentations we had to do. And how awesome Holly is with her cool accent
