As challenging as and as much work as this class required, I really enjoyed this class. It was well organized and all the work was beneficial and good practice to applying our knowledge that we learned in class. He was very helpful and understanding of our workload outside of class. Great job!
The course syllabus and the schedule of all the course work has changed. For instance, the course syllabus did not request us to finish a interview with manager but then 1 week before the deadline of this interview, we were informed to finish this assignment, it was too sudden and not fair to students if they choose professors according to the coursework. Sometimes I was confused about the deadline of the next assignment so it was difficult for me to plan my schedule. I believe it would be better if the course syllabus is settled and followed for the whole semester. However, Professor Constancio Paranal has a strong passion in teaching management and his working experience brought us lots of business insight. He always responded to our feedback efficiently. For example, if there are lots of students ask for the similar questions, he will send a mass email to answer these question with lots of details. His style of teaching is friendly and thoughtful, I believe the whole class likes him a lot and so do I.
Constancio Paranal is a treasured professor - honestly, our school needs more professors and faculty like him. Constancio is a likable, relatable, and easy-to-connect with; further, he is effective at motivating and encouraging students. His classes are engaging and he cares about his students. Throughout the four years I've been at UH, I've come across teachers with a couple of these traits, however, Professor Paranal is the only professor with all of these traits. Frankly, I am somewhat surprised a professor of his caliber is teaching at UH when he likely has an array of opportunities at other schools/businesses. Our school should strive to retain him as a professor. Professor Paranal is a gifted professor. Generally student's don't fill-out these evaluations due to the inconvenience, however, Professor Paranal does stand-out and I believe the majority of our class (and future students/classes) would agree with the description and assertions stated in this evaluation.
I thoroughly enjoyed this course and it was a refreshing conclusion to my undergraduate career; without hesitation, I would do it again. In all objectivity, I don't think I could accurately provide criticisms for Constancio -- he was a consummate professional throughout the semester, exercised extensive knowledge in & beyond the field, and was very considerate as an instructor. With that said, I suppose one thing I could say in reflection is that we do not always need to be accommodated as students. By nature, we are lazy and manipulative, and many of us are so spoiled out of our brains that we would rather complain to administration than put on our 'big-boy' pants and actually do real work for our degree. In the words of Churchill, "you have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." Such would be my approach to many of the peers I have in this class. Obviously, as an instructor, there are provisions to keep in mind related to this as an undergraduate course, with adjustments to be made versus graduate studies or even PhD work. But, after all appropriate considerations, it's perfectly acceptable to demand excellence from us as students; and, more pertinently, to tell people to shut the hell up, as you hand them a tissue to cry with on their way back to their mommies. This is college, ladies & gentleman. Deal with it. Thank you for an invigorating and enthralling semester Professor Paranal. I look forward to reflecting on this experience throughout my professional success.
Great teacher just needs to work on clearly stating requirements for the work students need to complete.
Should have been made a writing intensive. Not comparable nor consistent with other BUS315 classes.
He is very professional and passionate. I think he can be the most professional professional in the Shidler College of Business. I assure that he is the one of best professors in the college. Very organized. Good professor.
Loved having you for the semester!
I learned a lot about management by working on case studies and figuring out how to approach and solve problems. There was a lot of writing though.
I believe writting assignments are good but I must recommend Mr. Constancio to not assign so much. This is not supposed to be a writting intensive course yet many students including myself feels like it should be. He was very knowledgeable and I was glad he was able to share his working experiences to us.
This shouldve been a writing intensive class
Constancio Paranal has done an excellent job in teaching the class because he goes over the content very well and emphasizes the main objectives by discussing the most important facts concisely. The case studies that he assigns for the class have an important lesson in the management and organizational field that we can apply to our personal lives.
Constancio Paranal is a well-organized and knowledgeable instructor that teaches his students how to apply class concepts to the real world and our future professions. Constancio is an effective communicator and makes it a point to be available to answer his students' questions, while also ensuring that the students fully understand the assignments.
Learned a lot from all of the case study.
He is a nice approachable guy and is very knowledgable but he doesn't give much guidance on assignments. There were many times I found myself guessing my way through things. I also think his course should be a writing intensive.
I enjoyed this class very much, however, I had a hard time tracking my progress. The course structured changed a few times throughout the semester and grading was unclear. Some assignments seemed unfairly weighted. Still, I grew a lot as a writer and enjoyed having Constancio as my professor. I would take other management classes from him.
Amazing Professor that is so amazing.
Paranal is a great teacher. A lot of writing, however he was fair and acknowledged his faults. He is a very caring person and always puts his students first. At first the class was very mundane and tedious but Paranal did a good job incorporating everything that was necessary in a course but also being very fair about it. Thanks for a great semester.
The balance between, lectures, class exercises and group work was good. I really liked the interview assignment that replaced case vignette 3. There was way too much writing for individual case vignettes (excluding the 1st one since that wasn't too bad). The Nokia case material itself was enough to bore me, let along being able to write a paper on it. Most people were tired of writing by the time of the Nokia Case and probably had a meltdown since it was getting close to the end of the semester. I think requiring us to write is good, but not too much because it gets really exhausting and is what prompts everyone to thinking that the class should be Writing Intensive. The amount of writing in this class is comparable to actual Writing Intensive classes from my past experiences. I feel that financial analysis shouldn't be heavily graded/or graded on at all, because some students may not be finance majors or may not have taken BUS 314 (financial basics) so it would be unfair to those students. If anything, I feel that the financials and all ratios should be given to us, and from there, we're supposed to deduce why the ratios are low/high and what's causing them to be the way they are. Overall, love the enthusiasm, humor, and spirit of the professor. There's much to experiment since it's only your first time teaching this class. There's always room for improvement. And interestingly, I kind of liked taking notes from the blackboard, though it did take more time to go over the material.
The course syllabus was tailored towards the WF class, which made deadlines confusing. In addition, deadlines kept changing, often at the last minute. Instructions for assignments were distributed late and were often not sufficient to complete the assignments to the instructor's expectations, so students had to continuously question the professor to clarify instructions. The amount of writing done in the class was comparable to a writing intensive course, which this course was not supposed to be.

Although there was a lot of writing involved in this course, I felt like I learned useful techniques and information that would be helpful to my career in the future. I feel like the material learned in this course is very applicable to the "real world". Professor Paranal was very helpful and was always willing to answer questions or do whatever he could to assist students with concerns or problems that they encountered.
I liked this course overall. I liked the case study assignments because I learned about different company, how they worked, how to improve them, and I got to apply marketing, finance and problem analysis in the assignment, which I have learned in previous classes. I didn't expect to be dealing with so much financial analysis because this is management class, but its good that I did. I wish we did more than case studies because after the mid-term it got kind of boring. Other things is that I wish the course was a bit more organized, I think the syllabus changed at least 4 times and we were suppose to have a second quiz but ended up not. I also wish laulima was organized better, even for the professor files were hard to find or misplaced in other folders. Overall, Prof. Paranal is a very enthusiastic teacher and has a lot of knowledge about management issues. He grades very fairly and cares a lot about the students.
He expected a lot from us but I feel this class is the one class that's going to help me most out of college. It was a lot of writing but I thought it was fun to dissect a problem from a case and come up with creative out of the box recommendations to fix the problems. He would also change things up once in a while so it wasn't just him lecturing and us taking notes, he made us do activities that got us out of our seat and made the class not boring. By far the best professor I've had in Shidler so far!
Professor P! Thanks so much for an awesome class. I was very impressed from the beginning when you talked about your past experience at Harvard and other Ivy league schools and I knew we would have a great teacher. I was right. I really enjoyed learning by being hands-on in the class room. Activities we did outside and inside the classroom were fun, and I feel like I remember those things the most because I enjoyed them. You were very funny all through the year and explained things well. The Case Vignettes were difficult, however, I believed they were very beneficial in learning about Management. I also believed you graded fairly, and you even explained what we did wrong by efficiently grading our essays and pointing out any mistakes. Recommendations: Overall the class was great. However, I would say that maybe some things weren't organized/ planned the best it could be. Example: Changing dates of assignments, more notification on when quizzes will be (one of the reasons I didn't do well because I didn't study for it, maybe it was more of my fault), more consistency in the schedule. The reasons for this is most likely because you just started at UH, and it seemed like you were just thrown in from the beginning, but you handled it very well. Also, I'm sure things will be more consistent in the following years. I personally would've like more opportunities to do public speaking because that is a skill that everyone should be good at. I like to challenge myself too. And anything that would put us in a realistic situation as a manager. (Applying classroom to real-life situations I am sure would be of great help) Thank you. Favorite class. Favorite professor :) P.S. I truly hope you achieve your goals in the future with Standford, etc. Thanks for inspiring me to be the great leader/ manager that I hope to become one day.
He is a great teacher. His class is well organized and help student to understand better on the text. Even though he had assign lots of writting homework, it made me undestand the concept of management better.
He was very prepared and organized and knew a lot about the course even though he was a new professor at the University of Hawaii Manoa. He was very refreshing and I loved his class!
I think you did a good job for your first semester teaching! I know you kind of suddenly came into this position, and I appreciate that you adjusted your teaching style based on the feedback we gave. I know you're busy because you're doing so many things, but I would appreciate it if you gave back feedback on all our assignments--towards the end of the course, the feedback started dropping off. Even though it's good that you gave out the letter/number grade so quickly towards the end, I would have liked to look at detailed feedback so we could see how we could improve. But overall, the course ended up being not too bad! Thanks for a fun experience!
Considering we didn't know who our professor was until basically two days before and apparently he didn't either I thought he did a pretty good job in coming in and preparing all the work, syllabus etc. in the time that he did. He was very easy to reach outside or after class for help and to answer questions. His course work was very good in that it related to the class and got me thinking about things I had learned in the course. I learned a lot of important things I believe will be beneficial to me if I pursue a career in a major corporation later in life. His lectures were very engaging and easy to pay attention to, and his ability to talk to us about what its actually like to work for a corporation was very beneficial as he was able to relate what we were learning to his own experience in the workplace.
I think he did a pretty good job considering that this was his first time teaching in college. I just wish that this course was offered as a WI considering the amount of writing we had to do.
The case vignettes are a good way to prepare us for upper level courses. I feel like I have the confidence to look at any company from a business sense. He did an excellent job as a first time professor this semester and I know he'll only get better. The only thing I would change is the amount of write ups to be done in the course. Perhaps alternating between write ups and presentations so both skills are equally practiced rather than so much writing.
Constancio Paranal is one of the most generous teacher I have ever seen before, I will definitely recommend this class to my friends!!
Constancio is a great educator. He is very knowledgeable about the subject and makes you think harder about the cases.
Professor Paranal was a very good teacher. He was very helpful and was available to students at any time of the day. The only problem I had was that the class had no strong objectives or it was not very clear what we learning from the book.
Thanks for allowing the make-up works and extra credits. Even though it is not a writing intensive class, it required more writing and analyzing. I learned a lot from the case analysis.
Paranal's class is one of the hardest business classes I've taken this semester. In the beginning I think many of us were overwhelmed by the huge work load, but as the course progressed he balanced out the work better, especially with group work. I do wish we could have gotten a writing intensive credit though. I really liked his personality because it made it better listening and discussing as a class. Even though the work was hard, I believe he really gave us applicable lessons to use in the real world especially for management majors. It is very likely that the work we did in class will help us in our future jobs in business which made this a very beneficial class.
Very enthusiastic about teaching. Pushes students to perform at the best of their ability.
Professor Paranal is a funny teacher who makes the class enjoyable. He explains everything thoroughly, and he values students' opinion. One thing that I disliked about his class was that the resources on Laulima was disorganized and it was hard for me to find the files that I needed. However, I am aware that Professor Paranal is new to Laulima.
It was very busy class for writing assignments. However, I learned a lot through the papers. Thank you very much.
I felt like I was taking writing intensive class at first, but I could learn a lot of things through discussing actual business cases and also improve writing skills. Actually, this course was quite hard for me to get high grade. However, Prof. Paranal's course material and instructions was really helpful to solve encountered difficulties. I really appreciated it.
Great teacher but a lot of work compared to all other 315 classes.
Required papers for the course are too lengthy.
Too many writing assignments make this course like a WI class which is not that good.
I ended up paying money for a text book that we barely used in this course. I loved the way the professor challenged us and it was nice to do a lot of group projects, so that we can learn how our peers think through discussion of topics.
This course seemed to have significantly more writing assignments than the other sections. Although I do feel I learned more than my friends in the other sections, at times the papers were difficult to keep up with. I've never done anything like a Case Vignette before--I've only ever read case studies before. Overall, I'm really impressed with how Professor Paranal directed his first semester.
I like how the information Constancio taught us was something we would be able to use in the real world. He gave a lot of good examples from his own personal experience. I thought it was really cool to have a teacher who is a Management Consultant for HP as my BUS 315 teacher because he knows firsthand what skills and knowledge we need to have that job. One thing I would suggest that he work on is being consistent with his assignments. He would give us an assignment and then a few days before its due he would change some of the requirements and it got a little confusing.
Learned a lot in this class, but with the amount of writing that we do this class should have also been an upper division writing intensive.
Very focused and structured. Excellent feedback and engaging lectures!
Overall I think that you have a passion for the subject and desire to be a good and effective professor which means a lot because there are a lot of professors out there who don't really care. I like that you are also a practicing professional and bring in your work experiences to class, and push the students to think outside the box instead of regurgitating information. But, it seems like you were disorganized this semester and it caused a lot of confusion for me. In the future, I would recommend that you have your deadlines figured out well in advance instead of changing them frequently and make sure its on the syllabus. Plans were bouncing around a lot and it got frustrating after a while. I wish you the best and I'm sure someday you'll make it to Stanford!
