11. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
Make it more interesting.
I think she did an excellent job.
more activities example reading portions of scenes in class to improve class discussion
Perhaps more videos to really drive home exactly what she means. Words only say so much.
Continue to do more workshops like the commedia dell 'arte section--it really involved the class effectively! :-)

awesome
Currently the class seems too easy, the theatre histories that include Dennis and/or Elizabeth tend to be more challenging, and while the added challenge can be daunting for students it also pushes them, in it's current form it's quite easy to just cruise through the class doing very little reading, if any, and still get a good grade. I think quizes throughout on required readings will encourage students to actually read the material, I think less than a quarter of the class actually does currently, and for those already reading the material it will strengthen their grasp of key points. While the worksheets are an attempt at achieving this goal, it is currently quite easy to wikipedia/spark notes many of the writing topics and answer the worksheets after reading summaries. To be honest I haven't done any of the readings this semester and will likely receive an A. It probably shouldn't be this easy even for a talented student. Also if quizes are created creatively not just simple short answer or worse fill in the blanks or multiple choice, maybe using more hypothetical situations as in some worksheets you can help students apply the theatre history knowledge you are passing on making it more meaningful and useful to the students in the long run, otherwise the theatre history classes turn into just some generic requirements for the majority of students.
She showed us her knowledge about the westernt theatre with based on the hand out.
lessen the topics covered in this course. There was way too much topics to study and not all of it connected together.
idk
I believe that the class was taught awesomely. I learned so much that I did not know before about world theatre. If anything, we could definitely use a better projector and television to help with her visual aids. The equipment definitely inhibits what she can do in terms of multimedia learning for us.

That only way that I can think that she could improve the class is just keep doing what she is doing. Professor O'Malley creates an environment that is not only relaxing and cool, but also intellectually stimulating. Keep up the good work.

Skits and class participation in readings were especially interesting.
When the class came together for participating in lectures, i.e. comedia del arte, the french school, and playwright debates.
To know the history of Theatre around the world.
None of the disscussions interesed me. I'm not into this sort of theatre
Asian Part of Course
I liked the worksheets the best and class discussions. Getting up to act was definitely a highlight.
When we learned about the different types if genres and its neoclassical rules was a bit interesting, and I liked comparing some plays based on their genre.
I like the fact that we were able to have our own opinions, especially when it came to the worksheets.
19. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
The lecture
just the readings, they weren't bad or too much its just sometimes with other classes and activities a person is involved with you miss out on historical readings. But really there is no way to fix it.
The readings. Some were very dry.
the lecture aspect.
Its relevancy to what I am majoring in.
awesome
Overpriced textbook! In four years of this theatre course I've only read from the text once, not useful and fairly a waste to buy for all but the most dedicated students. The readings could easily be distributed in handouts that could be even purchased/printed by students.
Nothing
learning history.
Writing the paper
The powerpoint projector going out every so often.
The very limited time of reading the play to write out our worksheets was a bit stressful for me to catch up.
There was just so much reading and worksheets due. I understand that the course is suppose to be intense. But there were times when there was so much information that it was very difficult to keep up with one country when you are moving on to another one the next day. It was quite hard. I also work full-time and work load proved to be a little taxing. But I did it!

21. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
Class could be more interesting. More general stuff should be taught instead of the synopsis of plays since we don't get to read most of them. Can elaborate more on the plays we have read.
N/A
more in class reading of scenes to analyze more in depth and show different possibilities of what the text could mean and actually mean.
More specificity about the worksheets. I ended up short mostly because I didn't know when the worksheets were coming. If she and Julie could come up with a system where they have 10 sections of worksheets over the course and require each student do one for each section, I think it would be far more effective.

awesome
Make the class more challenging, can offset lowered grades by curving, and more assignments to make use of required readings or they won't get read.
Having more participating lessons, such as when we went over Comedia del Arte.
Nothing
Don't make this a required course, but I know it needs to be. I for one was not interested in learning this theatre history.
no, paper and make this class an oral communications
Better equipment in the classroom Thea 101.
Maybe doing a skit like what we did about the three critics' arguments (Rymier, Collier, Congreve) and reading some short plays together could be good.
There should be less assignments and spending more time comprehending each country's contributions to theater.
22. Other comments:
Class is pretty cool.
great fun
None.
awesome
Overall I enjoyed the four semester cycle and think it can be very rewarding for someone with a natural interest in theatre history, however for many it's just a lame requirement that if you miss a part of the cycle can mess up your ability to graduate, there are substitutable courses but often are more challenging and outside the department and therefore less useful to students.
Thank you very much for teaching!
Homework assignments were good for htis class. I liked who we got to choose ten worksheets and each was only a few questions. It was great when she wrote comments on them even if it was a suggestion to get us thinking more or in another direction, or a simple "good"

11. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
The hardest thing was having it up to the students to find actors for their scenes. One hand it is nice to be able to pick who you wanted, but it also seemed that many of the students had a hard time even finding people and their scenes were rushed because of this which didn't really allow for a full exploration of directing.
Nothing.
i really don't know how she could improve. i thought this course was taught very well. i really enjoyed every aspect of the course. maybe more mini in class directing scenes in the beginning of the semester before the actual directing scenes start.
create a pool of actors either as a requirement for 221 students..so that the directors don't have to hunt for actors
She does a great job in explaining things and arousing class discussion. I don't think that she can because the bar is already set pretty high. Its just that some people are not as talkative or like to voice their opinion or don't make choices but it does not reflect on her teaching.
don't think she could, really. it's a great course and she does an excellent job of relaying necessary information.
I found it very satisfactory though I felt discussions on scenes could have been more neutral, it's nice to be positive but that doesn't necessarily help anyone improve. It doesn't need to be cruel or mean, but if everyone had to not just comment but find one good and one bad point of the directing then it would be more balanced and probably more useful to a prospective director. Otherwise you just end up stroking egos which is fine for anyone just taking the class as a requirement but those who strive to improve honestly need criticism. And learning to be critical of other's work helps us be critical about our own.
Give students actors to work with on their scenes. So of us had a difficult time finding students willing to commit to rehearsing and working on a directing scene. Some of us don't know to many people or have friends that could take on a project such as our directed scenes. We would have a easier time getting started if that was taken care for us. Maybe if we could team up with an acting class and combine that way.

I liked that we got to explore a field of theater in a creative way, yet gave us the challenge in it limits.

Directing the scenes
I liked directing our own scenes.
The scene work and dissecting and directing the scene!
The actual directing of scenes.
Seeing the various styles and techniques used by a variety of people in the class.
Directing scenes
Learning the different ways actors can hold the audiences' attention. What plane they're on, the way they're facing out, the movement they're doing. Just the different things that catches the attention of the audience. Also a scenes rhythm contributes to the effectivness. And realizing how much work is needed to be done to show relationships and overcome hard obstacles needed to be presented.
20. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Trying to find actors for the scene.
Trying to get actors to do our scenes.
nothing. i really liked everything.
Attempting to find actors
having to find my own actors for my scenes.
the class was great, just in working with some actors it got a little stressful but if you care about your work you always want to get better and it comes with it.
Honestly, none. If anything, only the part about blocking. Seemed a little common sense, but still a necessary step to directing.
Probably due to small class size but it felt like things developed slower than they could have, I prefer a more sense of urgency in classes since I don't have a natural sense of urgency, it helps propel me.
script analasys, even though it's crucial, I didn't like writing papers on it.

23. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
As stated above, having more actors available somehow. Otherwise it was an enjoyable course.
It needs to be offered in more time slots so that it can be scheduled before or after other required classes. This would also help in the casting of actors in scenes because then people in other classes can participate.
more mini directing scenes in the beginning of the semester.
having a list of actors who would be willing to participate in the directing scenes and also be held accountable.
more scenes to work on
It might be interesting to have us all do one SHORT rehearsed scene to see each others' differences in style. I know this could get really boring to see over and over again...but it could be interesting, too.
Just encourage more constructive criticism, anyone can say how good it was or how much they liked something.
More rehearsing time to work on directing scenes.

11. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?
?
Lurana taught the course very well; it's the content that was frustrating. I think that more time dedicated to actual research would make the class much more worthwhile. I wish we could have started the actual research and writing of the paper way earlier on, rather than spending two months going over stuff that graduate students should already know. I think the deficits in our research abilities would have presented themselves as we went along. It was very frustrating to sit through lectures and do worksheets on material I learned fifteen years ago. I feel my time would have been better spent conducting more in-depth research. If the content of the course is to remain the same, I feel that graduate students should have the option to test out of the course. If the course is going to remain mandatory, it would be wonderful if graduate students who are already familiar with research methods could spend more time researching. Sitting through information on how to research when you already know it is really tedious.
She can provide more specific examples for student reference.
I am not so sure that I know how it could be improved. There were worksheets that were to be filled out about sources but not many of the sources fit into the confines of the worksheets. The teaching of this class was good.
Spend a little more time with writing the final paper.
While the writing groups were somewhat effective, I found the individual meetings more productive because the feedback was relevant and effective.
Overall I think the instructor is fine and friendly. The only thing I would suggest is to provide more valuable feedback on the research paper. I did not feel the instructor really took the time to understand my point of view, so her suggestions seemed a little left field. This may be remedied if the content of the course was improved to actually FOCUS on the research paper.
Lurana O'Malley did a good job!

18. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
The in class discussions were thoughtful and enlightening.
Writing the paper, meeting with Lurana and finding out how to make it stronger, fixing it.
It allowed me freedom to chose a topic to research.
I like being able to write about whatever I choose, that was a very welcome change.
Group discussions on topics of papers and presentations.
Student presentations about assigned articles. The discussions were rich, insightful, and a catalyst for continued discussions after class time.
Writing the research paper, discussion of journal submissions, and writing groups.
presentation and the research
19. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
Gawwwwddd that final paper kicked my ass. Its such a monster.
Everything that came before writing the paper--the "learning how to research" portion of the course. I also did not like the writing groups. The only times I felt like I gained anything from this course were when I worked by myself and worked with Lurana one-on-one. In general, I really hated coming to class because I was so bored and felt like it was such a waste of my time. I feel like I would have gained way more from working in the library or out in the field.
It did not provide me with enough structure to chose a timely topic.
I'm in a different situation than a lot of people because I did a LOT of research in undergrad and so I knew most of the research techniques that were taught.
None
Reading the paper titles from previous years during the first class.
The rest of the class. Tedious, busy-work assignments that one should already know how to do if he/she has been admitted to graduate school.
nothing

22. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
I don't know. I would have done better had I better used my time. Its probably pretty good as is.
Do not make it mandatory. Make conducting research the main focus of the course.
More specific examples.
Do not know.
The course was well structured but it could have been better to spend a little more time on the final essay on hand. Maybe there was too many research assignments.
THis course would be much more fulfilling if it focused on writing the in-depth research paper and the journal submission; spending more focused time in the writing groups, which always seemed rushed; discussing the process for grant writing; and/or doing smaller writing exercises. Spending more than 1/2 of the semester doing fill-in the blank busywork or learning how to use the library was pure tedium and not worthy of a graduate level class. The library work with Ted Kwok is valuable! but it could be completed in 2 weeks, with the rest of the semester actually focusing on writing.
The course taught me to learn to do research. In the part of presentation, I learned many knowledge.

11. How can the instructor improve the teaching of this course?

Has there ever been an audition process to find actors for scenes? It may help the directors - especially those new to our department - to find people who are free during the performance times, and who are willing to commit to the process.
There is no way to improve Lurana O'Malley.
Impossible until technology catches up with my dreams. Then, perhaps, we might be able to clone her.
Perhaps require two scenes instead of three - allowing for the slight availability of actors and rehearsal time. Would be good to be able to focus more on a particular scene and perhaps the critique could be a bit more stringent.
I would have liked more time to talk about the shows going on in the semester.

18. Which aspects of the course did you like the best?
Directing and watching scenes, being free to try new things and take risks.
I like directing... Seeing other directors' daring concepts brought to life was a great way to expand my own ideas. I also really liked studying contemporary directors and seeing the craft from so many different perspectives.
3 Scenes!
There is a great combination of hands on learning backed by a solid groundwork of book knowledge.
I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of working outside your personal comfort zone in an attempt to experience a wider body of styles of directing.
The sharing of the directing scenes and the cronstructive feedback of our peers that was built into many components of our assignments.
The scenes
19. Which aspects of the course did you like least?
I liked the whole thing :)
Finding rehearsal time and space... Nothing to be done.
Nothing! Except for the lack of COOKIES!!! I Hope MASEEH turns in his Eval!!!!!!
There's only so much you can do in a single semester and I would like to have done more.
I wish the students' critiques were a little less polite. In the end, the constant positive comments make me question the validity of the criticism of my own work. I wish we had more of an opportunity to discuss our perception of working on our chosen scenes.
I didn't like the graphic content of one of the plays we were required to read.

nonexistent?
Devoid, Non-Existant. I have a question: Am I the teaching assistant? If so, I'm very sorry I didn't help out more, it's just that nobody ever told me. Nobody ever said "Bronzen Hahn, you are the Teaching Assistant", so how can I really be held to any kind of a standard when I really didn't even know that I held such an important position!?

22. State in two or three sentences how this course could be improved.
What if we had a section where we put up a longer scene, got feedback, and re-worked it?
This course needs more funding. It should receive grants totaling 400,000 dollars every term to be used by the student directors in the development of their scenes. Costumes, Props, Sets, Professional actors from the Berliner Ensemble, and other important things could be purchased for the scenes with only a modest budget.
In some way incorporate the acting classes. As a new student, it was difficult to find actors.
I would require one less scene, but that the scenes be judged with a bit more of a critical eye. I would also suggest more of a round robin approach to sharing our feelings to other directors about a given project.
Perhaps, providing some additional instruction or tools to faciliate the critiqueing of the directing scenes, would be helpful. I believe if some additional resources could be provided to assist in this area, the peer feedback would be more meaningful and valuable. Maybe reading various local/national reviews of theatrical productions could aid in this area.
